Males of many moths possess scent organs, ranging from simple scales and hair-tufts to complex glands. Males of the gregarious beet webworm Loxostege sticticalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) display their ventroposterior brushes (VPBs), located on the eighth abdominal sternite, toward adjacent females and usually maintain this posture until sexually receptive females become available, or the arrival of photophase. The peak period of male L. sticticalis VPB display during the scotophase broadly coincides with that of mating. Our experiments revealed that females exposed to male VPB display increased their calling behavior and were more likely to mate than those exposed to males that did not display their VPBs. Volatile chemicals provide the only reliable sensory modality for intersexual communication in L. sticticalis because all behavioral assays were conducted in a sealed darkroom, thereby eliminating a role for visual signals, and no vibratory signals occurred during VPB displaying. Therefore, odors released from the VPB of male L. sticticalis may act as aphrodisiac signals to conspecific females in order to enhance female receptivity and increase his mating success. Our study indicates that chemical communication in these gregarious moths apparently involves mutually stimulating interactions between female attractant and male courtship pheromones. Behavioral and physiological effects mediated by activation of immune system response to the injection with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) have been established to be mediated by chemosignal modification to a considerable extent while conducting experiments on BALB/cLac and C57Bl/6j male mice. Control mice of both strains have been characterized by the same increase of plasma coricosterone concentrations caused by territorial conflict between the control and SRBC-treated males; hence, the quality of bedding did not have an effect on hormonal response. The greatest level of plasma corticosterone in SRBC-treated mice was detected after dyadic tests of social conflict in the case of provided bedding from the control mice. The bedding odor also determined the agonistic behavior of more aggressive male BALB/cLac mice. Dyadic tests staged on bedding from SRBC-treated males led to a decrease in the amount of direct aggression in comparison to tests on bedding from control males; moreover, the number of aggressive demonstrations positively correlated with the increase of the rectal temperature, which might be considered a manifestation of the emotional reaction to territorial conflict. The attraction of virgin female medflies to either the natural pheromonal odor of calling males or its synthetic major components was enhanced by both intermediate and minor pheromonal components in multiple choice discrimination tests. The modification of the standard Gow rotating-trap-array, cage olfactometer to allow a single source of natural pheromonal odor to be delivered equally and simultaneously to a number of traps greatly increased trapping efficacy (64% capture rate) and ability to resolve odor preference discrimination by female flies. In olfactometer cage bioassays, responding female medflies expressed preferences in attraction to male odor augmented with either synthetic intermediate or minor components over male odor alone. In dual-choice flight-tunnel bioassays, the minor blend enhanced the attractiveness of both the natural male odor and its synthetic major components. Moreover, the minor blend, when presented together with the synthetic major components, comprised an artificial pheromonal lure competitive for the first time with the natural male odor in attraction of virgin female medflies.
