Abstract In this work, pigments of majolicas made between the sixteenth century and eighteenth century from Gerace have been characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Majolica, known also as pottery, was originally used to identify all objects made from clay materials. In this work, ten samples were analyzed: two vases, six majolica fragments made in Gerace, one vase of uncertain origin (probably Gerace or Caltagirone) and one vase of Venetian origin. The Raman spectroscopic analysis allowed to identify most of the pigments present on the studied cultural heritage pottery above described. Pigments white, yellow, orange, red, blue, and green have been characterized and their attribution allowed to divide the artwork made in Gerace with those made wherever. Graphical Abstract more...

Abstract Background Fundamental restoration of sculptures must include the research of pollution composition and exhibit surface condition as well as accurate identification of the materials of sculptures, bas-reliefs and coatings. In the recent years, studies of marble objects aimed at identification of contamination nature and composition have been developed. It should be noted that some exhibits have individual features as objects of restoration due to complex exposure to the environment, e.g. to fire. Results The article describes the results of surface contamination study on two exhibits from the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts collection. Marble relief sculpture “The Flagellation of Christ” was the main object of the study. Glazed terracotta (majolica) “Madonna Friedrichshain” was studied as a control sample with the same type of contaminations but with less sensitive surface. According to the results of different gas chromatography and X-ray fluorescence analyses, pollution compounds were identified as fatty alcohols, fatty acids and esters, part of which being residues of pyrolysis gasification, including those containing iron and lead. In order to gently clean the exhibits, several variants of chemical compounds were proposed based on various chelating agent mixtures, and, after studying their comparative effectiveness, the optimal scheme was chosen for removing existing contamination. For verification of marble exhibits safety, selected cleaning mixtures were tested on polished Carrara marble sample. Conclusion The most suitable scheme of organic contaminations removal including those containing iron and lead was suggested as part of restoration process. There is a number of working schemes of cleaning the surface of exhibits, however our proposed scheme interacts with the marble surface more gently because the target cleaning mixture composition was formulated taking into account the nature of pollutants and the least possible impact on the sample surface. more...

This paper deals with the findings of Hospital Viejo site of Logroño (La Rioja, Spain), which yielded the largest evidence of local pottery production, comprising three kilns and a potters' dump (13th–15th centuries). The study of pottery production in inland Iberia provides valuable information on the material conditions in which the Iberian medieval and post-medieval society occurred. Yet, the territory of La Rioja has been largely eclipsed by studies at coastal and southern areas of Iberia, due to their role in maritime exchange. With the aim of understanding the specific incidence and evolution of medieval pottery at regional scale, 77 sherds (MNI 637) including glazed and unglazed ware and kiln utensils were archaeometrically examined by combining the use of ICP-MS, XRD and SEM-EDS. Likewise, NAA was applied for provenance analysis, including the collation with a large majolica NAA database. The results provided the first chemical fingerprint of the production from Logroño consisting on three compositional groups within the same workshop (LOG-A, LOG-B and LOG-C). Moreover, pottery trading from Teruel and Valencia was detected, sustaining the historical records of these trade-networks. The imports showed tin lead glazes obtained by known recipes, contrasting with simpler manufactures (mostly unglazed or only lead glazed) of contemporary Logroño. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

13. La mayólica italiana y la porcelana de Medici en las colecciones reales de Felipe II

- Abstract
Among the most defining features of the figure of the true collector revolved around the individual who acquired works of art and sumptuary objects, as well as literary works and natural genres, among other forms, for his own taste and delight, according to his own criteria and convictions, regardless of official criticism and the formal and economic values of the artistic work. Analysing from this perspective, we can see how FelipeII, King of Spain since the abdication of his father CarlosV in 1556, brought together all the adjectives of the individual collector and became the first great collector of the Spanish Habsburgs. However, it will be the detailed study of the preserved inventories of the Spanish monarch where FelipeII's personal critical judgement is demonstrated through the objects collected of different kinds and provenance. In this study we will focus on the records of faience and porcelain from Italy, a set of pieces of outstanding artistic value that appear in the historical documentation of the 16th century and which have gone largely unnoticed in the history of art., Los rasgos más definitorios de la figura del auténtico coleccionista giraban en torno al individuo que adquiría obras de arte y objetos suntuarios, así como obras literarias y géneros naturales entre otras formas, por gusto propio y deleite, bajo sus propios criterios y convicciones al margen de la crítica oficial y los valores formales y económicos de la obra artística.

- Abstract
The documentation preserved in the various inventories of the Austrian dynasty's preserved possessions reveals an interest in ceramics in general. This is evidenced by the large number of entries of utilitarian and decorative earthenware and porcelain in the various lists, together with pieces of high economic and sentimental value, which shows that the artistic genre was admired and valued by Spanish royalty. In addition to these pieces in the royal collections, there are some extraordinary pieces that depict representations of their image and which have historically been attributed to the patrimony of Spanish monarchs, although there is no documentary evidence to prove it. In this study, we will present and analyse a set of these pieces in which the image of Emperor Charles V, as well as his military campaigns, are used as an artistic decoration for ceramics moulded in different pottery workshops around the European continent., La documentación conservada en los diversos inventarios de bienes conservados de la dinastía de los Austria constata el interés por la cerámica en general.

Due to the existence of wares that were produced both within and outside Spanish-tradition workshop in Panama Viejo, this site offers an apt opportunity to study how coexisting but seemingly distinct potting communities organized their craft in a colonial context. To this end, a sample of two locally produced wares—one characterized by high-fired, wheel-thrown, and tin-glazed vessels known as Panamanian Majolica and the other by low-fired, handmade, and coarse-textured utilitarian vessels known as Criolla—were analyzed. The findings of the macroscopic and microscopic characterizations revealed that highly divergent potting communities, whose productions practices and craft organization varied drastically, coexisted at the site. more...

This bachelor thesis deals with the history of the manufacturer of siderolite and majolica, the Wilhelm Schiller & Sohn factory in Horní Žleb. It focuses on the evaluation of the production of the factory during its existence between 1851 and 1910. The factory was one of the most important producers of siderolite and majolica in North Bohemia at the time. Franz Laube, the later director of the Technical school in Teplice (Teplitzer Fachzeichnen- und Modellir-Schule), was also one of the factory's employees. Wilhelm Schiller closely followed the artistic development of the world's styles and designed his models according to them, while preserving their own character. The factory employed a large number of people from the surrounding area. more...

The wealthy mathematician and university professor Alfred Pringsheim (1850-1941), Thomas Mann's father-in-law, owned one of Germany's most important private collections of Renaissance art - especially applied art. Amassed between 1880 and the First World War, it focused mainly on Italian maiolica and silver from German-speaking regions. Pringsheim displayed his collection in his own home, a mansion in Munich built by Berlin architects and furnished in southern German-Swiss Late Renaissance style. Photographs that have only recently come to light allow the ambitious staging of the ensemble within this historicist interior to be reconstructed. After the Nazi seizure of power, the Jewish Pringsheims were forced to sell their house to the National Socialists. The silver collection was confiscated by the Gestapo in 1938 and acquired by the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in 1941. Following their restitution to Pringsheim's heirs, the silver objects at the centre of this study are now scattered all over the globe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Acompounded mixture of fritted white, bright, glass ceramic, glaze coating for household majolica in the system NaO-KO-CaO-BO-AlO-ZrO-SiO is developed. The structure of the coating is distinguished by homogeneity and uniformity of the distribution of the crystalline formations over the entire volume of the glaze. The physical and chemical properties of the glaze coating (CLTE = (50.2 - 50.5) × 10 K, thermal resistance 150°C, whiteness 80 - 82%, brightness 87 - 89%, microhardness 5350 - 5400 MPa) attest an appropriate ratio of the crystalline and glassy phases in the glass ceramic coating formed. The section of Gorgo a Cerbara in Italy has been proposed as the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Barremian/Aptian boundary (Lower Cretaceous). This section displays the transition between the white pelagic limestones of the Maiolica Formation (Tithonian-lowermost Aptian) and the polychrome marls of the Marne a Fucoidi Formation (Aptian-Albian). The Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE 1a) anoxic horizon (Selli Level) is located in the latter formation. Here, we report for the first time a palynostratigraphical assessment of this key section, with a very high resolution in the Selli Level. Palynomorph groups recorded include acritarchs, microforaminiferal test linings, 58 dinoflagellate cysts, 44 sporomorph taxa, and freshwater fungal and algal bodies. These include such biostratigraphical markers as Rhynchodiniopsis aptiana and Odontochitina operculata among the dinoflagellate cysts and Afropollis cf. jardinus among sporomorphs. Biostratigraphical events recognised allow comparisons with previously studied successions in other similar areas (e.g. Cismon apticore in the Southern Alps, Italy). The distribution of taxa recorded in the Gorgo a Cerbara section is generally consistent with published data, but several differences between the assemblages recorded in the Cismon apticore and in this study were noted. The best global markers for the Barremian/Aptian boundary are represented by the disappearance of R. aptiana and by the appearance of O. operculata, but in this section these occurred 0.65-1.35 Myr after the magnetostratigraphically defined boundary, within the Selli Level. The angiosperm pollen A. cf. jardinus is recorded only within the Selli Level (from 1.4 to 1.6 Myr after the Barremian/Aptian boundary), consistent with an Early Aptian age. A cluster of 10 extremely short-ranging dinoflagellate cyst excursion taxa appear in this section coincident with the Nannoconid Crisis event and its associated thermal peak, ca. 10-20 kyr before the onset of the OAE 1a. Several short-ranging Pteridophyta spore species are found only within the Selli Level itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

The application of glazes on pottery became common in Western Europe from the late 12th century / early 13th century onwards. However, the process of “glazing” entails different degrees of complexity which might involve a great variety of raw materials. Accordingly, simple glazing process consists of a single layer applied over the surface of the body, becoming a shiny and transparent coat after firing. The addition of pigments would result in a coloured glaze that can be translucent or even opaque. The more complicated sequence occurs in decorated glazed pottery, where opacifiers, pigments and metals are added to produce an opaque white glaze to enhance the decoration. This glaze is applied to the bisque pottery and manufactured, usually, in a second or third firing. To deepen our knowledge of the glazing technique, we have studied glazes from coarse pottery, cooking ware, polychrome coarse pottery and majolica from Barcelona (13th to 18th centuries AD). The application of the glaze, the thickness, and the composition of glazes (including opacifiers, pigments and/or metals) have been examined, through Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). This study has revealed the high diversity in the glazing technique. more...

The imports showed tin lead glazes obtained by known recipes, contrasting with simpler manufactures (mostly unglazed or only lead glazed) of contemporary Logroño. more...

Black and green tin-glazed pottery is known to be one of the true majolica manufactures at Barcelona during the end of the medieval period. This pottery means the evolution of a production process for achieving opacified decorated tableware, started one century before, with the elaboration of what is known as archaic majolica. Black and green implies a new high variety of decorative motifs made in black, or in black and green, on a white opacified glaze prepared following a recipe adapted by potters to prepare the base glaze and to applicate the pigments for attaining the decorative patterns, characteristics of this period. Originally thought as imported from Valencia workshops, the development of different archaeometric projects conducted in the core of the ARQUB team, allows verifying an origin in Barcelona. Besides, recent excavations dated back to the 14th century provided a great number of Black and green sherds with new decorative motifs unknown up to now, allowing the specialists to create a new corpus of decorative patterns, which is still in progress. Based on insights obtained from those first archaeometric studies and considering the advances on the classification of decorations based on archaeological arguments, a new sample of Black and green sherds was selected for this study. The aim was to observe whether decoration and technique of manufacture could in some way be related, understanding the technical process as the selection and application of raw materials and the firing temperature at which this pottery was made. To achieve these objectives, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM-EDX) have been performed. The results allow verifying the groups previously defined and to identify a new chemical group, probably related to a recipe for the body-paste different from the others. On the other hand, the study enabled us to observe differences also in know-how in firing, which in some cases seem to be connected with differences in the decorative motives, suggesting, perhaps, the discrimination of artisans. more...

34. ALGUNAS PERSPECTIVAS POLÍTICO-ECOLÓGICAS SOBRE LA LOZA ANDINA.

- Abstract
The new, hybrid scholarly field of political ecology, focused on the twenty-first century's innovation-driven economy, has perspectives useful in studying an earlier "global" or "knowledge" economy that emerged in Spain's sixteenth century colonial enterprise. This essay explores the production of tin-enameled pottery (majolica; loza) in Spain and its colonies, particularly the viceroyalty of Peru, through the field's dual emphasis on the political (the ethno-religious persecution of Muslims, and the mercantilist trade policies of Christian Spain) and the ecological (resource availability and use). Political-ecological concepts such as "business clusters," "gatekeepers," and "pipelines" can be applied to the many factors influencing the history of development of this ware in Spain and Ibero-America. In contrast to today's economy, attitudes toward innovation in pottery were rather ambivalent, and innovations were primarily introduced from outside Spain (especially from Italy) rather than internally developed. Early tin-enameled ware produced in the Andes follows traditional Hispano-Moresque green and black decoration, unlike in Mexico, where it was relegated to second-class status. Blue painting arrived late, but it is not known if this was because the potters who settled in the Andes were primarily morisco refugees or a consequence of lack of access to cobalt pigment because of the region's distance from Spain. The present work focuses on majolica objects from the collection of the museum of ceramic in Ascoli Piceno (Italy). The scientific investigation was performed on fragments detached from seven maiolicas attributed to the Castelli production (Abruzzi region) and one majolica from the Ascoli Piceno production (Marche region). The Castelli artifacts (late sixteenth-early eighteenth century) belong to the decorated style known as ' compendiario.' The piece from Ascoli Piceno recalls the decoration style of the other considered objects and is attributable to the 'Paci' manufacture (first half of the nineteenth century). The selected objects were investigated by fiber optics reflectance spectroscopy, micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The ceramic bodies of all objects are calcareous, whereas the glazes are lead-alkali type opacified by tin dioxide. Blue and purplish-red decorations were obtained by cobalt and manganese compounds dissolved in the glaze, respectively. Yellow and orange decorations were obtained by particles of lead antimonate and hematite. Finally, black decorations were obtained using compounds rich in manganese and iron. The study contributes to knowledge on the production of Castelli ceramics and presents first archaeometric data on the maiolica production from Ascoli Piceno. The scientific examination highlights continuity with the Renaissance production, and the joint contribution of the three analytical techniques suggests distinctive features among different productions, thus integrating and refining the information obtained by the art-historical study. Maiolica (tin-enameled earthenware) was a staple of daily life for serving food and drink, as well as other household purposes, in Spain and Spanish America throughout the colonial period. Examining choices in ceramic styles is one way to examine the colonial policies of reducción, which were to instill a regular, commonplace Christian order in everyday life. The Río Ceniza Valley of western El Salvador, the heartland of the Nahua-speaking Pipil polity known as the Izalcos, was a center of Spanish colonial commerce in Guatemala. This research presents a typology and chronology of Guatemalan maiolica, the stylistic similarities of its maiolica types to trends in Europe, and frequencies in rural vs. urban use, based on an ample collection of 16th- to 19th-century Guatemalan maiolica from extensive survey and excavations. The relative importance of maiolica vs. maiolica attributes on indigenous-made pottery gives a view into daily life under extreme conditions of colonialism and the process of reducción. Ex voto are devotional objects, widely used in Italy as a form of prayer or wish, or as thanksgiving for a grace received. In a broader historical perspective, votive offerings are hung in Greek, Etruscan, Roman shrines and later in churches or to show gratitude for miracles obtained, healing from illness or infirmity, or as a simple supplication and prayer. The ex voto here presented seem to be unique in the world: made of majolica, they come from the church of St. Roch in Castelli (Abruzzo). They depict breast benign and malignant lesions (mastitis, abscess, fat necrosis, inflammatory cancer, infiltrating carcinoma) in three dimensions, performing an accurate and personalized portrait of breast diseases (in some cases with the depicted name of the sick woman), showing fine details of each disease, and demonstrating accurate knowledge of the female anatomy and pathology. This bachelor thesis deals with the non-traditional interconnection of materials in the field of ceramic design and design in general. A crucial part of the work is the treatise of foreign and Czech designers who inspire the author to create the practical part. The theoretical part of the work is the treatise on the design and the designers mentioned above. The part about ceramics where introduced readers to the necessary steps for the work of a ceramist. Last but not least part about textile, its functions and handmade textile works. The practical part documents the creation of a convolution of five vessels, in which the design, ceramics and textiles are connected at the same time. An essential factor for vessels is their functionality, which is not neglected in the creation process. more...

The results of an archaeometric trial study performed on an important finding of Renaissance maiolica (mid-15th to early 16th century) from the Ducal Palace of Urbino are presented. Mineralogical-petrographic data ( XRD, OP, SEM-EDS) and chemical characterization ( ICP/AES-MS: major and trace elements) of both ceramic bodies and glazes were compared with similar data provided on coeval maiolica found in archaeological excavations in Pesaro, now stored in the city's Municipal Museum, in order to verify an origin of the potteries from common ( Pesaro) or different ( Pesaro and Urbino) production centres. The results indicate that ceramic bodies were produced with quite similar illitic-calcareous clays, most probably taken from the same local Pliocene Formation. Similarities were also found concerning the glaze's glass (silica-lead), colourants (cobalt, copper and manganese) and pigments (lead antimonate and cassiterite). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

In this study, an archaeometric characterization of 32 ceramic fragments from Talavera de la Reina and El Puente del Arzobispo, dated between the 16th and 18th centuries, has been carried out. Together with three fragments of biscuit, they have been analysed through X-ray diffraction ( XRD), X-ray fluorescence ( XRF), differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis ( DSC- TGA). From these chemical results, a statistical study using exclusively majolica ceramics has been carried out. This work has allowed us to find certain differences between the manufactures of the two production centres on the basis of their chemical composition. The mineralogical study has allowed us to determine the estimated firing temperatures of each sample, using the estimated firing temperature ( EFT) as an argument for their classification into three fabrics. Fragments of decorated floor tiles were retrieved from the Akko Tower shipwreck, Israel. Most tiles were made of bright brown fired clay with a white glaze decorated with colored stenciled motifs (Type A), and others consisted of a red-brown fired clay body, coated with a brown pigment covered with transparent brown glaze (Type B). This study aimed to characterize the two tile types, to reveal information concerning the manufacturing process, and to determine the origin of their raw material. A multidisciplinary approach was used, including light microscopy, SEM-EDS, electron probe microanalysis with wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EPMA-WDS), XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analyses. The characterization of both tile types demonstrated the use of different raw materials. The Type A tiles were covered with tin-opacified majolica glaze and colored with various mixtures of pigments. The blue color was due to pigment rich in cobalt, the yellow color was due to Naples yellow and lead-tin yellow I minerals, and the green, orange, and brown colors were all prepared by mixing the Naples yellow pigment with different minerals. These majolica glaze tiles were probably manufactured in Sicily. The brown coating of the Type B tiles was due to pigment rich in lead and iron minerals. These tiles were produced with different manufacturing processes, and apparently made in France. more...

Màster Oficial d'Estudis Avançats en Arqueologia, Facultat Geografia i Història, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2020-2021, Tutot: Jaume Buxeda i Garrigós., [eng] During the modern period, Lisbon was established as the main producer of delftware, as well as other ceramic products, in Portugal. In recent years, archeological interventions have uncovered multiple remains of pottery production in two large producing areas of the city that rises the need to conduct compositional characterization studies in order to address future provenance questions. This will help in the study of commercial dynamics established between this city and the rest of the world. Thus, it is presented here the archaeometric study of 15 individuals recovered at production contexts in Lisbon, dated back to the sixteenth century and up to the first half of the eighteenth century. Chemical and mineralogical characterization techniques have been applied, specifically X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results have allowed us to identify four compositional groups that can be used as reference groups (RG) or localized references, albeit with some caution, as well as various aspects related to its production technology., [spa] En època moderna, Lisboa s’estableix com el principal pol productor, juntament amb altres produccions, de majòlica a Portugal.
