En las leyes de la electricidad y el magnetismo se soporta la operación y funcionamiento de centrales eléctricas y diversos dispositivos como radios, televisores, motores eléctricos, computadoras, equipos de transmisión de señales útiles en la comunicación y equipos que con frecuencia se utilizan en medicina. James Clerk Maxwell, en 1873, formuló las leyes del electromagnetismo como se conocen hoy día y Heinrich Hertz, poco después, en 1888, comprobó la validez de éstas, produciendo ondas electromagnéticas en el laboratorio, lo que condujo al desarrollo práctico de dispositivos como la radio y la televisión. Los logros alcanzados para explicar el comportamiento de la materia a escala atómica, han permitido los desarrollos tecnológicos que disfrutamos en la actualidad. Todo esto hubiese sido imposible, sin haber encontrado una teoría capaz de explicar fenómenos como la radiación de cuerpo negro, el efecto fotoeléctrico, y la emisión de líneas espectrales definidas por los átomos en una descarga en un gas. La respuesta a éstos y otros interrogantes condujo a una nueva teoría que se desarrolló en el primer tercio del siglo veinte denominada Mecánica Cuántica. Las primeras ideas de esta teoría las introdujo Planck, pero los aportes e interpretaciones más destacadas fueron hechos por físicos tan notables como Schroodinger, De Broglie, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Born y Dirac. James Clerk Maxwell, in 1873, formulated the laws of electromagnetism as known today and Heinrich Hertz, soon after, in 1888, tested the validity of these, producing electromagnetic waves in the laboratory, which led to the practical development of devices such as radio and television. The achievements to explain the behavior of matter at the atomic scale, have allowed technological developments we enjoy today. All this would have been impossible without have found a theory capable of explaining phenomena such as black body radiation, the effect Photoelectric and emission spectral lines defined by the atoms in a gas discharge. The answer to these and other questions led to a new theory that developed in the first third of the twentieth century called Quantum Mechanics. The first ideas of this theory introduced Planck, but the most outstanding contributions and interpretations were made by such notable physical as Schroödinger, De Broglie, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Born and Dirac.
