Open circuit and high frequency screener have already been adopted by some mining operations, however not taking advantage of its full potential. This work presents a new approach, combining them to have a better use of the available energy and, thus, increasing productivity. This concept could fit not only the studied case but also any other ore, since it is based on the milling inner processes and the external classification. The studied magnesite process has currently four parallel ball mills operating in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, grinding the ore for the silicates flotation cells. The modification proposed changes the circuit to operate with three mills in open circuit with parameters that improves inner classification and particles transport and breakage. Their product are collected together to feed a high frequency screener, a more efficient equipment when compared to hydrocyclones. The screener oversize feeds a fourth ball mill to continue grinding and prepare the ore for the next steps, dewatering and reverse flotation. On the other hand, the screener undersize goes to desliming and reverse flotation equipment. According to the data collected in the pilot plant and the modeling for the industrial site, this modification could promote 27% increase in the productivity, due to 17.6% increase on mills feed and 7.8% in mass recovery, caused by loss reduction on desliming and flotation. The gain is expressive due to some inefficiency of the current circuit and still need to be validated on the industrial site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Saline Unit of the Cenozoic Basin of Madrid recognized since prehistoric times for its saline springs, which were object of exploitation to obtain salts and to use the medicinal properties of brines. At the beginning of the 20th century, the old mine works was continued, aimed at mining developments for the massive extraction of sodium sulphate for the chemical industry. The petrographic and mineralogical distribution and position of Saline Unit through the basin supported on geological and geophysical surveys, and also basin analysis and especially X-ray diffraction salts mineralogy. The distribution across the basin let us define the petrographic and mineralogical nature of the Unit and improve knowledge of its position in the structural framework of the Cenozoic Madrid Basin, and its comparison with salts from other Iberian Cenozoic basins as Ebro, Calatayud, Cerezo de Rio Tirón... The available sedimentological data from present-day basins and the equilibrium diagrams of the SO4 2- - Ca2+ - Na1+ system, supported the hypothesis of leaching of ancient evaporite deposits, an open lake system with a surplus of calcium ions over the course of the precipitation of large thicknesses of glauberite rich sediments. The weathering of the Unit generates an insoluble residue rich in gypsum, with thicknesses of more than 3-4 tens of metres, and with pseudomorphic textures of glauberite, anhydrite... and even halite, which clearly show the secondary character of this secondary gypsum formation. The genesis of these “secondary gypsum layers” of the Saline Unit causes deformations in certain stratified levels, and produced locally sink holes filled by the overlying materials. These deformations may affect foundations and infrastructures (tunnels, service galleries, etc.). Weathering can generate areas enriched in mirabilite, while coexisting with sodium sulphate brines that manifest themselves in many and seasonally varied efflorescence types, and saline springs. This work has as objective the spectroradiometric characterization of magnesitic ore of the south-central portion of the state of Ceará through reflectance spectroradiometry. The samples collected from the mines of Torto, Riacho Fundo and Cabeça de Negro, located between the municipalities of Orós and Jucás, were cut ad polished, in order to obtain uniform surfaces, and to minimize the effect of the relief and any weather effects of surface. The data were obtained through the FieldSpec Pro FR 3 which collects data in the range between 350nmand 2500nm. The collection procedure was performed in the laboratory, without any interference from external lighting. Three measurements were made in different sample location, each measurement representing the averageof 50 spectra collected. The spectral features found are related to iron ions, to the groups CO32-, H2O, OH-, and Mg –OH bond. Seven of these features stood out for their frequency and intensity, being called Band 1 to Band 7. The spectral behavior at the shortest wavelengths is associated with the electronic transitional processes of iron, as well as the intense and wide absorption band between 1000nmand 1300nm(Band 1), and the band at 1700nm(Band 3). Due to the spectral features at 1390nm(Band 2), 1440nmand 1940nm(Band 5) characteristics, except for the CN –05 sample, it could be said that there is the presence of H2Oinserted as a fluid inclusion or as part of crystalline structure of the samples from the Cabeça de Negro mine, with the features at 950nm, 2070nmand 2390nmbeing attributed to hydroxyl and Mg –OH bond. In the spectra of the samples from Torto, Riacho Fundo, and the CN –05 sample from Cabeça de Negro mine, there are only spectral features related to the hydroxyl and the Mg –OH bond. The spectral features related to the transitional vibrational processes of CO32-are centered at 1850nm(Band 4), 1970nm(Band 5), 2130nm(Band 6) and 2300nm(Band 7) . In the spectra of samples from Cabeça de Negro mine, with the exception of the CN -05 sample, the absorption featureof the Band 5 is masked and shifted to 1940nmdue to H2O absorption. The Band 7 is intense and well-markedin the samples from the three mines, sometimes presenting a double feature. The albedo of the spectra and the intensity of the features are influenced by the presence of organic matter and granulometry. The technique of removing the continuum helped in the better visualization of the spectral features, as well as in the characteristics ofthe features, however it does not, in fact, cancel out the effects of organic matter and/or granulometry Este trabalho teve como objetivo a caracterização espectrorradiométrica do minério magnesítico da porção centro-sul doestado do Ceará através de espectrorradiometria de reflectância.

The magnesite ores processing operation in Brumado needs to increase its production tonnage by 20% and the comminution stage was identified as the process main bottleneck. Currently, the process has four ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, preparing the ore to magnesites reverse flotation. Initially, this process was modeled in order to verify the grinding efficiency and define the initial parameters for the tests. To reduce the investment necessary to increase productivity, an innovative grinding concept was studied, combining open circuit and high frequency screener. Considering this configuration, it could be expected reductions of overgrinding and comminution specific energy. In addition, more homogeneous particle size distribution could be fed to flotation, which may increase selectivity and, hence, recovery. According to this concept, the proposed flowsheet divides the comminution in a primary grinding, open circuit with selective parameters, followed by classification on a high frequency screener. The screener undersize proceeds to desliming and flotation. The oversize, in turn, has to be directed to the secondary milling, preparing the ore to feed the flotation. In order to verify the parameters and model the process, pilot plant tests were carried out, evaluating the primary milling, classification and secondary milling. Furthermore, it was necessary to check the desliming and flotation, verifying the impact of the grinding modification in these processes. With the obtained results in the pilot plant trials, the milling was modeled and scaled up for the industrial process. As a consequence, the milling capacity could be increased by 11%. Moreover, as a result of the milling and classification efficiency improvement, the overmilling could be reduced, increasing the recovery. This fact, added to the better defined flow characteristics, as mineralogy and particle size, led to reduction in the losses from desliming and flotation, raising the mass recovery from 81.2 to 87.6%. These results project a 27% increase in the circuit production, thus surpassing the project objectives (20%). To conclude, the desliming, flotation, thickening and filtration processes were evaluated to identify new process bottlenecks. After the analyses, only flotation and filtration require interventions. For flotation, one additional bench will be necessary in both circuits. On the other hand, the filtration needs to be analyzed by a specialized company, since the current equipment already has restrictions

At the Brumado plant, magnesite fragments ranging in size from 70,0mm down to 28,6mm, are burned in kilns, in a calcination and sinterization process known as single burning, to produce dead-burned magnesite (magnesian sinter). Some ores are quite suitable to this process while others are disintegrated down to a powder. This degradation of the ore is called decrepitation. The fines that are produced in this way decrease the permeability to the gases, slowing down the calcination and, consequently, the furnace production. The kiln operators acquired an empirical knowledge of the different available ores behavior during the burning so that they avoid the usage of those that can potentially cause any harm. However, the causes of the phenomenon are unknown. The mineralogical, physical and chemical characteristics of ore samples and products from burning tests that simulate the single burning process are studied with the help of several analytical techniques. The aim of this study was to find out characteristics that could possibly contribute to the understanding of the problem in such a way that the raw materials could have a more rational and conscious usage. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the main responsible for the keeping of the ores mechanical integrity after burning is the initial sintering made easier by some elements that are present in the ores that have an acceptable behavior. These elements are Mn, Fe3+ and Ti. Also, the indented contact between the magnesite crystals is considered to have a positive effect in decreasing decrepitation. On the other way,the low content of Mn and the presence of Ca and Fe2+ and straight contacts are considered to favor decrepitation.

- Abstract
The magnesite is cryptocrystalline and occurs as mm- to dm-thick, massive, whitish deposits interbedded with claystone, marlstone, and laminated and nodular gypsum. Four lithofacies associations containing magnesite beds (MLH, Mys, Myp, M¡N) have been distinguished. These lithofacies associations occur in two main sedimentary sequences which reflect the evolution of high-salinity lake and moderate- to high-salinity lake sub-environments, respectively. The texture of magnesite, as observed from magnesite-rich samples. under S.E.M., is mainly formed of a dense, homogeneous aggregate of subhedral to euhedral rhomb-like crystals showing about 1 micron in average size. Isotope values (0 180, 013C) from 34 magnesite samples are relatively spread, with 0180 values from -4,8 to +4,9 %0 PDB y negative values for 013C (-9,3 to +0,4 %0 PDB), being lower in the magnesite beds corresponding to MLH and Mys lithofacies associations. The stratigraphic, textural and isotopic features suggest that the magnesite formed primarily under evaporitic conditions, probably as a result of mixing of concentrated and meteoric waters enriched in biogenic CO2• Morerover, the negative o\3C values determined in many magnesite samples could reflect a bacterial mediation in the precipitation of the magnesite. Sedimentological analysis of the lithofacies associations containing magnesite beds and their sequential arrangement indicates that this carbonate formed in both hypersaline and moderate- to high-saline lake subenvironments, Depto. de Mineralogía y Petrología, Fac. de Ciencias Geológicas, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Sedimentary magnesite is largely present in the Miocene evaporite formations (Lower and Intermediate units) of the Calatayud Basin (NE Spain). Magnesite deposits are forming part of sedimentary sequences corresponding to hypersaline and moderate-to-high concentrated saline lakes. Both field and mineralógica! studies show that magnesite is associated with a wide range of lithofacies, but most commonly with phyllosilicates and gypsum. Trioctahedral clay minerals (Mg-smectites) were identified in mudflat environments of the hypersaline Lower Unit, probably formed by transformation of inherited phases in Mg and Si-rich saline-alkaline environments. Moderate to well ordered smectites (diocta-trioctahedral) in green clay lithofacies in absence of magnesite suggest a genetic competition forming magnesite or Mg-smectite. In contrast, the exclusive presence of illite associated with interestratified illite/smectite in sequences that correspond to moderate-to-high concentrated saline lakes could result from illitization processes of smectites in Mg-K-rich environments, under periodical dry/wet cycles., Depto. de Mineralogía y Petrología, Fac. de Ciencias Geológicas, TRUE, pub

[EN] In the formation of the marine magnesita and dolomita carbonates come forth at the border of the sea in lagoons limans and lagunes climatic factors interevene, the tatice of which was hardly know up to now. The genetic process is, however, long and still unknow in its greater part. The word "diagenesis" comprises this whole process.
