Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are among the fastest-growing technologies for producing even the most geometrically complex models. Unfortunately, the lack of development of metrology guidelines for these methods, related to dimensional and geometry accuracy and surface roughness, significantly limits the commercialization of finished products manufactured using these methods. This paper aims to evaluate the macro- and micro-geometry of models manufactured using the PolyJet method from three types of photopolymer resins: Digital ABS Plus, RGD 720, and Vero Clear. For this purpose, test parts were designed and then manufactured on an Object 350 Connex3 3D printer. The Atos II Triple Scan optical system and the InfiniteFocusG4 microscope were used to evaluate macro- and micro-geometry, respectively. For both systems, measurement procedures were developed to obtain statistical results for evaluating geometric accuracy and surface roughness parameters. In the case of macro-geometry, for Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear materials, 50% of the central deviations (between first quartile Q1 and third quartile Q3) lie within the range (−0.06, 0.03 mm) and for RGD 720 material within the range (−0.08, 0.01 mm). For micro-geometry, the arithmetic mean height (Sa) values for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples were approximately 1.6 and 2.0 µm, respectively, while for RGD 720, it was 15.9 µm. The total roughness height expressed by reduced peak height (Spk) + core height (Sk) + reduced dale depth (Svk) for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples was approximately 9.1 and 10.5 µm, respectively, while for the RGD 720, it was 101.9 µm. In the context of targeted improvements in energy efficiency, secondary rolling bearing contacts are gaining relevance. As such, the elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) roller face/rib contact of tapered roller bearings significantly affects power losses. Consequently, this contribution aimed at numerical optimization of the pairing’s macro-geometric parameters. The latter were sampled by a statistical design of experiments (DoE) and the tribological behavior was predicted by means of EHL contact simulations. For each of the geometric pairings considered, a database was generated. Key target variables such as pressure, lubricant gap and friction were approximated by a meta-model of optimal prognosis (MOP) and optimization was carried out using an evolutionary algorithm (EA). It was shown that the tribological behavior was mainly determined by the basic geometric pairing and the radii while eccentricity was of subordinate role. Furthermore, there was a trade-off between high load carrying capacity and low frictional losses. Thereby, spherical or toroidal geometries on the roller end face featuring a large radius paired with a tapered rib geometry were found to be advantageous in terms of low friction. For larger lubricant film heights and load carrying capacity, spherical or toroidal roller on toroidal rib geometries with medium radii were favorable.

Abstract: Information concerning the effects of the implant cutting flute design on initial stability and its influence on osseointegration in vivo is limited. This study evaluated the early effects of implants with a specific cutting flute design placed in the sheep mandible. Forty-eight dental implants with two different macro-geometries (24 with a specific cutting flute design – Blossom group; 24 with a self-tapping design – DT group) were inserted into the mandibular bodies of six sheep; the maximum insertion torque was recorded. Samples were retrieved and processed for histomorphometric analysis after 3 and 6 weeks. The mean insertion torque was lower for Blossom implants (P <0.001). No differences in histomorphometric results were observed between the groups. At 3 weeks, P =0.58 for bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and P =0.52 for bone area fraction occupied (BAFO); at 6 weeks, P =0.55 for BIC and P =0.45 for BAFO. While no histomorphometric differences were observed, ground sections showed different healing patterns between the implants, with better peri-implant bone organization around those with the specific cutting flute design (Blossom group). Implants with the modified cutting flute design had a significantly reduced insertion torque compared to the DT implants with a traditional cutting thread, and resulted in a different healing pattern.
