L’article se penche sur l’importance des métaphores dans la coconstruction du savoir lors d’échanges interculturels dans le cadre d’un dispositif de télécollaboration en contexte multilingue et multiculturel. L’objectif de ce projet mené entre l’université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie et l’Université de Valence en Espagne est de favoriser l’acquisition de compétences linguistiques des étudiants en français et en espagnol, ainsi que de renforcer leurs aptitudes interculturelles et numériques. Il s’agit aussi d’accompagner les étudiants dans l’exploration des possibilités offertes par la construction collaborative de connaissances, afin qu’ils appréhendent leur répertoire d’identités et de stratégies de communication comme autant de ressources dans ce processus. L’étude s’appuie sur des entretiens menés auprès d’étudiants calédoniens et valenciens ayant produit ensemble des « outcomes solides publiables » durant leurs visioconférences. Ceux-ci constituent les résultats visibles et l’aboutissement des tâches comportant une dimension sociale et exigeant une coopération mutuelle pour leur réalisation. Le recours à une gamme étendue d’images métaphoriques par les étudiants participe à la coconstruction symbolique du sens entre pairs, mais aussi au partage et à la redéfinition de leur identité plurielle dans un effet miroir.

Ciudad tomada (2013) incluye once cuentos de Mauricio Montiel Figueiras. La mayoría de sus tramas se ubican en una ciudad innominada. Con base en el concepto de topoiesis, que implica analizar el sistema de significación de los componentes y de las relaciones espaciales de una obra para interpretarla, estudiaremos el tema de la ciudad construida por diferentes semas: rascacielos, departamentos, penthouse, el metro y sus estaciones, supermercado, zoológico, avenidas, calles y parques. La interpretación de esta construcción semiótica espacial conduce al tópico del laberinto que funge como eje temático de todo el libro, pues los espacios, los personajes y las situaciones están inmersos en una estructura laberíntica, donde prevalecen la confusión, los enigmas y una isotopía que alude al aislamiento, el abandono y lo repetitivo. Una parte relevante de este estudio analiza las metáforas que el autor utiliza para referirse a la ciudad, las cuales complementan el análisis de la topoiesis, pues suponen un enfoque sensorial de lo que representa vivir en una ciudad-laberinto, en una ciudad tomada por la deriva y el extravío.

In the aftermath of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is a predicted (and emerging) increase in experiences of mental illness. This phenomenon has been described as "the next pandemic", suggesting that the concepts used to understand and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic are being transferred to conceptualize mental illness. The COVID-19 pandemic was, and continues to be, framed in public media using military metaphors, which can potentially migrate to conceptualizations of mental illness along with pandemic rhetoric. Given that metaphors shape what is considered justifiable action, and how we understand justice, I argue we have a moral responsibility to interrogate who benefits and who is harmed by the language and underlying conceptualizations this rhetoric legitimates. By exploring how military metaphors have been used in the context of COVID-19, I argue that this rhetoric has been used to justify ongoing harm to marginalized groups while further entrenching established systems of power. Given this history, I present what it may look like were military metaphors used to conceptualize a "mental illness pandemic", what actions this might legitimate and render inconceivable, and who is likely to benefit and be harmed by such rhetorically justified actions. The existence of majaz mursal i'tibar ma kana in the Qur'an has proven the use of majaz style of language in the Qur'an which underlined that the Qur’an cannot be separated from majaz. The study of the Qur'an will cause the ambiguity in meaning and even fatal mistakes if balaghah approach (majaz) is not used. The data of this research were obtained from the Qur'an and the opinions of several Balaghah experts, such as Abu Ubaidah and Az-Zamakhsyary as the source of information in this study. Semantics was also used in this research, which was analyzing the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an which were classified as majaz i'tibar ma kana. The research results showed that there were 12 verses in the Qur'an including majaz mursal i'tibar ma kana which were found in the different verses, such as surah Al-Baqarah verse (2): 234, surah An-nisa verse (4): 2, surah An-nisa verse (4) 12, surah Al-Rahman verse (55): 56, surah Al-Kahfi verse (28): 47, surah Al-Hujarat verse (49): 9, surah: An-Naml verse (27): 87, surah Fussilat verse (41): 21, surah Thaha verse (20): 74, surah Nuh verse (71): 26-2, surah Ad-Dhukhan (44) verse: 47,48 49. So, there must be a meaningful figure of speech (metaphor) in understanding the verses of the Qur'an and there was no ambiguous meaning. Therefore, this study suggested the need to explore the science of balaghah as one of the tools of science in understanding the Qur'an implicitly.

Background: Clinical reasoning is a complex process that is central to medical practice. GPs who follow patients with multimorbidities have to combine several roles in their care. Metaphors are a language tool that potentially provides access to the clinical reasoning behind this management. Aim: To analyse the metaphors expressed by GPs to better understand their clinical reasoning. Methods: Nine general practitioners (5 women and 4 men) aged between 29 and 57 years participated in the study. Non-directive interviews were conducted, transcribed and analysed using Schmitt's systematic metaphor analysis framework. Results: Seven metaphorical themes. Within these metaphorical themes, GPs described their clinical reasoning processes in the face of multimorbidity as (1) a building process, (2) a sudoku or puzzle, (3) an Odyssey, (4) a story with someone, (5) a race, (6) looking at a painting, and (7) playing a tune. Conclusion: The metaphors may highlight the complexity of the clinical reasoning process of general practitioners in the long-term management of patients suffering from multimorbidity and support a deeper understanding and awareness. The emergence and spread of a new pandemic, COVID-19, have raised topics of concern for health professionals, policy makers and publics across the globe. Governments have struggled to find the right policies to stop disease transmission, but all have introduced social distancing. In the United Kingdom this has come to be understood as staying at home and, when outside, maintaining a physical distance of approximately two metres between oneself and others. In this article, the authors examine the emergence of this new social representation as portrayed in one UK broadsheet and one tabloid with the widest circulation: The Times and The Sun, between early March and early April 2020. Using social representations theory and thematic analysis, the authors show that social distancing struggled to emerge from underneath government obfuscation. It was first seen as a threat to normal life, which in modernity is predicated on mobility; it was later portrayed as a threat to social order; and finally perceived as a burden that, like the lockdown (its conceptual twin), needed to be lifted. Metaphors are usually perceived as mere figures of rhetoric (figures of speech). Nevertheless, some (school) professionals use them to state their personal relationships with their professional time. Their metaphorical temporalities are thus constitutive of their professional ethos. Our study shows how metaphors used in school heads 'speeches account for their appropriation of a culture, of professional values and a perception/identity quest in their working environment. This paper presents a preliminary sketch of what we have termed a Jungian socioanalysis - an emerging theory combining analytical psychology, complexity theories, sociological theories, socio- and psycho-analysis, group analysis and affect theories. Our assumption is that Jungian theory and practice need to attend to and focus more on social contexts, sociality and the influence of societal developments. But also, on the other hand, that analytical psychology, primarily Jung's theory of individuation and the transcendent function as well as the broad complexity perspective of his theory of psyche, can be extended to a 'socio' and not just a 'psycho' perspective. The paper presents five foundational assumptions for a Jungian socioanalysis, with the following headings: 1) A Jungian socioanalysis calls for a complex psychology; 2) (Un)consciousness is social and sociality has a dimension of (un)consciousness; 3) A Jungian socioanalysis explores social fields 'from within' by smaller groups; 4) A Jungian socioanalysis enables and is enabled by emerging metaphors and affect-imagery; 5) Socio-cultural fields have an impulse toward individuation. This paper presents central elements of what we have termed Jungian socioanalysis - an emerging theory combining analytical psychology, complexity theories, sociological theories, socio- and psychoanalysis, social dreaming, group analysis and affect theories consisting of five assumptions (see also Odde & Vestergaard 2021). Jungian socioanalysis develops a process approach, as opposed to a systems approach, to sociality. In this paper we focus mostly on one of the five assumptions, namely that Jungian socioanalysis explores social fields 'from within' through smaller groups, treating group processes as a vehicle to gain a psychosocial and cultural understanding of larger social entities. We give an example of this approach with a presentation of two local social dreaming experiences in Denmark, focusing on Europe in transition. We show that the most significant outcome doesn't rely on the specific content of the dreams, but rather on the engagement in the social dreaming process itself, resulting in transformative image-affects. The paper ends with reflections on how these social dreaming experiences inform a Jungian socioanalysis, pointing to enabling intersubjective meetings, or present moments, opening for a deeper understanding from within the group as opposed to a systems approach. In the context of various reforms to the Chilean educational system and the demonstrations that it has provoked, the objective of this investigation is to analyse the metaphorical concepts about the figure of the teacher. In the study we used a qualitative approach and a phenomenological design. 168 Chilean English Teaching students who were in the final years of their undergraduate degree answered an eliciting metaphor questionnaire. The analysis of the metaphorical expressions obtained from the questionnaire was carried out through semantic content analysis. From this analysis, three major categories were defined: metaphors focused on the teacher, metaphors focused on the students and metaphors focused on the teacher's social recognition. The results show that, even though the subjects are aware of the difficulties of their practice, they have a positive impression of the teaching practice. Epigenetics is a multifaceted field within genetics and genomics which focuses on discovering mechanisms involved in gene expression and regulation. It came to public attention around the turn of the millennium when the human genome began to be deciphered. Initial findings from epigenetics research held the promise of changing how we think about health and illness, evolution and heredity; speculations about how individuals and populations could begin to control such processes through epigenetics were then picked up in the public realm. In this article we concentrate on two normally distant domains within the public sphere: the advertising of alternative health products and services, and the promotion of alternative approaches to social science, especially around how social science deals with the 'biosocial'. Using insights from social representations theory and methods aligned with metaphor analysis, we investigate the meanings of epigenetics rooted in the use of metaphors and commonplaces that are circulating in current popular parlance and that are used to promote academic theories and ideas as well as tangible products and services. We compare and contrast them and assess their implications for collaborations between natural and social scientists. Our findings reveal some surprising similarities between the metaphors and commonplaces used by advertisers and social scientists, based in large part on the fact that both groups draw on the work of prominent epigeneticists. In both instances some fundamental tenets of mainstream biology are contested, and hopes are created for improving individual or population well-being through the manipulation of epigenetic mechanisms. This study explores the metaphorical dimension of idioms in original filmic texts and their translations in subtitles, in order to shed light on strategies used in the translation process. The research focuses on a corpus of 20 films from the Library of Foreign Language Film Clips (LFLFC), at the Berkeley Language Center of the University of California, Berkeley. More specifically, I analyze films in German and Spanish with English subtitles from a cognitive and contrastive perspective. My goal is to explore how translation can affect understanding and reception by an audience with limited or no skills in the original language. Results of the analysis show a tendency towards reduction of metaphorical expressions in translated English subtitles, these varying according to the original language of the film. Contrastive analysis demonstrates that in translation from Spanish, the explicit meaning strategy is far more frequent than in translation from German. The findings of this study can be applied in foreign language teaching as a means of developing learners' cultural awareness and language comprehension, as well as in the field of audiovisual subtitling translation. Dans cet article nous présentons une partie des résultats d’une recherche faite auprès d’étudiants et de professeurs de français et d’anglais du Centre d’enseignement de langues étrangères (CELE) de l’Université Nationale Autonome du Mexique (UNAM) sur la compréhension orale et sa pratique en salle de classe. Nous examinons en particulier la phase où nous avons demandé aux étudiants d’exprimer par une métaphore écrite ou un dessin ce que représente cette compétence pour eux. Pour commencer, nous expliquons les raisons qui nous ont amenées à réaliser ce travail et nous décrivons le contexte de notre étude. Dans un deuxième temps, nous exposons la méthodologie que nous avons suivie et nous abordons l’importance de la métaphore. Pour terminer, nous commentons les métaphores et les dessins élaborés par les étudiants et nous concluons avec les commentaires de ce qu’ils apportent à l’étude de la compréhension orale.

Dans l’avant-propos à la traduction française de son livre, Les métaphores dans la philosophie de Leibniz, Cristina Marras, chercheuse à l’ILIESI de Rome, évoque la situation inconfortable des études autour de la métaphore. La plupart des travaux contemporains sur le sujet se heurtent dans leur définition de la métaphore à la séparation du cognitif et du linguistique.

Les traits de la personnalité dans le processus de traduction ont été très peu explorés dans les études de Traduction. Les études existantes (ex : Davidson 2011, 2013b ; Bontempo 2012) ont démontré que quelques traits de la personnalité jouent un rôle-clé lors dudit processus de traduction, pouvant mener ainsi à une meilleure traduction. Cependant, le rôle de la personnalité dans le choix d’une certaine stratégie de traduction est encore méconnu de nos jours. Cette étude explore donc cette inconnue et propose une relation entre les traits de la personnalité, le choix d’une stratégie de traduction de métaphores et d’expressions, et le profil des étudiants de traduction et des traducteurs professionnels.

L’objectif de cette étude est de mettre en évidence le principe qui régit la formation de certaines unités phraséologiques particulières du français parlé en Côte d’Ivoire, en s’appuyant sur l’utilisation de la métaphore et du calque lexico-sémantique en tant que procédés de reproduction du substrat linguistique local. Plus exactement, elle permet de cerner les propriétés idiomatiques qui caractérisent la formation des lexies complexes (expressions figées) et des lexies textuelles (adages ou proverbes) sélectionnées à partir de certains actes de communication courants entre les Ivoiriens. En outre, elle analyse l’influence des langues locales, en tenant compte des phénomènes contextuels ou socioculturelles environnants, à l’effet d’appréhender les principes théoriques qui déterminent la formation de ces unités phraséologiques spécifiques du français ivoirien.

La lumière a suscité de nombreuses métaphores qui ont nourri notamment la pensée maçonnique et inspiré les Romantiques, le rayon blanc, somme de toutes les couleurs, présente une extraordinaire homogénéité au-delà de la diversité de ses phénomènes. Cette unité dans la pluralité qui caractérise la fraternité trouve son pendant dans la cohérence et la cohésion du raisonnement maçonnique qui puise ses arguments tant dans les sciences que dans les arts, tant dans la théorie abstraite et parfois métaphysique que dans la pratique et l’exercice, déployant alors toute une poétique du monde par un jeu de représentations liturgiques. Dès lors l’harmonie, sociale, politique et intellectuelle qui s’en dégage vise à réformer la cité en tenant compte de la diversité des « citoyens » et de la pérennité du projet commun. Il en ressort que le rationalisme possède une part d’irrationalité et que l’irrationalisme provient d’un excès de rationalisme. En ce sens, les hommes des Lumières ont aussi été de grands « illuminés ».

La présente étude analyse, dans un premier temps, certains types de métaphores qui apparaissent dans un texte politique pour déterminer le point de vue qu’elles véhiculent et souligner leur pertinence dans la construction du sens. Dans un second temps, l’approche décrit les tendances observées dans la version espagnole pour traduire ces stratégies discursives en s’intéressant surtout à la façon de transmettre le positionnement du locuteur.

Instrumental timbre can be thought of on many intertwined levels: the instrument itself, the musician playing, the interpretational style, the link with the listener. In the western tradition, musical scores often specify certain techniques (causes) in order to achieve particular timbres (effects). Timbral specifications can also be direct -- warm, round, brilliant, metallic, and so on - calling on multimodal sensory metaphors. Thus, notation occupies many levels, both up- and downstream of the relationship between technique and sound: composers can specify the cause (techniques, fingerings), the desired sonic effect (type of attack, phrasing), or the desired emotional effect on the listener.
