The simple microscope was for a long time the best instrument to scrutinize the microscopic world. Its quality is greater than what is usually assumed and it allows the observation of almost all structures that are seen with a modern compound microscope. We will explain how to build a powerful simple microscope with more than 400 magnification, using a microsphere lens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thesis aims to evaluate the performance of the National Program for Strengthening Family Farming (PRONAF), the Family Agriculture Food Acquisition Program (PAA) and the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. At first, European public policies are approached, and then related to the process of building public policies for family farming in Brazil between 1996 and 2016. In the first part of the thesis, data are analyzed on a national scale, taking into account the five Brazilian geographic regions. In the first part of the thesis, data are analyzed on a national scale, taking into account the five Brazilian geographic regions. The second stage consists of the main contribution of the thesis, a specific assessment of the interactions between public policies for family farming with the agrarian and socioeconomic reality of the State of São Paulo between 2011 and 2016. Through the analyzed variables, a diagnosis was made of the 645 cities in São Paulo. Then, these data were related to the performance of PRONAF, PAA and PNAE between 2011 and 2016. Through the multivariate exploratory analysis, it was verified which variables are correlated with the performance of the Programs. It was concluded that the Programs showed correlation with the less developed RAs, Presidente Prudente, Registro, Itapeva, Sorocaba, São José do Rio Preto, Bauru and Marília. Above all, if we consider the proportional correlation between 0.7 and 1 and the inverse -0.7 and -1, with the variables HDI, GDP, poor population, population in extreme poverty, participation of family farming, agricultural production, level of education, use of the agricultural area, technical-scientific integration and land structure. Taking into account the intentions formally expressed in the creation of the programs, especially that of seeking to assist vulnerable farmers, statistical statistics show that it was correlated with the agrarian and socioeconomic reality of the most vulnerable RAs. Although the resources of the programs and the number of farmers are still reduced in relation to their potential audience. CAPES: 001.

This article shows us how from the experiences shared with the Master Daniel Herrera, phenomenology is not far from being a job in which the philosopher details the life-world as if it were an encrypted text that demands the phenomenological reflection, as if it were a magni- fying glass in the hands of a rigorous reader. The text recalls the visits of Professor Juan Cepeda to the home of Master Daniel Herrera, and how he would answer his concerns making use of a magnifying glass to assist his reading. The domestic dog offers a unique opportunity to explore the genetic basis of disease, morphology and behaviour. Humans share many diseases with our canine companions, making dogs an ideal model organism for comparative disease genetics. Using newly developed resources, genome-wide association studies in dog breeds are proving to be exceptionally powerful. Towards this aim, veterinarians and geneticists from 12 European countries are collaborating to collect and analyse the DNA from large cohorts of dogs suffering from a range of carefully defined diseases of relevance to human health. This project, named LUPA, has already delivered considerable results. The consortium has collaborated to develop a new high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. Mutations for four monogenic diseases have been identified and the information has been utilised to find mutations in human patients. Several complex diseases have been mapped and fine mapping is underway. These findings should ultimately lead to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying complex diseases in both humans and their best friend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
As one of the most important groups of industrial enzymes, cold-adapted protease has been studied widely. An extracellular cold-adapted alkaline protease metalloproteinase (MP), produced by a marine bacterium strain YS-80-122, has been purified. The NH
2 -amino acid sequence of the purified alkaline protease MP was ANGTSSAFTQ, which was identical to that of the serralysin from Pseudomonas sp. “ TAC II 18”. The MP structural gene ( lupA gene) was cloned by inverse PCR, and the open reading frame of 1,443 bp encoded a 463 amino acid protein (without signal peptide). Sequence alignment reveals that the alkaline protease MP belongs to the serralysin-type metalloproteases. The recombinant protein LupA was expressed in Escherichia coli, and Western blotting confirmed that the LupA was homologous to the cold-adapted alkaline protease MP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Abstract A justification presented for the low utilization of geometrical optics experiments in Brazilian schools is the high cost of the equipment required for such studies. In this work, we describe a low-cost LED illuminator that presents a high performance when compared to commercial illuminators for the study of spherical lenses. By associating with the illuminator the lens of a magnifying glass, which can be acquired in an office supply store, it is possible to fully conceptualize the geometrical optics of spherical lenses. Among the characteristics of the new equipment it is emphasized the possibility to use it in illuminated environments, the ease in the study of the characterizations of images formed in optical systems and the possibility of simulation of a real situation of formation of an image by a lens. Examples of applications using the illuminator are also presented and discussed. Basic and fundamental experiments on geometrical optics of spherical lenses are highlighted with this new equipment.

International audience; The domestic dog offers a unique opportunity to explore the genetic basis of disease, morphology and behaviour. Humans share many diseases with our canine companions, making dogs an ideal model organism for comparative disease genetics. The region of Botucatu, Brazil, is traditionally known for its logging industries and has large natural and reforested forests. Due to the considerations on the Legal Forest Reserve, the aim of this paper is to show the distribution of the farming areas in the region and their application – especially natural forests. Also, to compare the municipal values with those stated in the Brazilian Forestry Code in order to analyze the process of implementing 20% of forest area in relation to the total farming area, at municipal and regional levels, not considering the areas of each of the farms nor the watershed to which they belong. The work results – developed from secondary data from the LUPA Project of the State of São Paulo Department of Agriculture, years of 1995/1996 and 2007/2008 – show that all municipalities in the region of Botucatu do not have forest areas equal to or greater than 20% of total area. Therefore, a non-exploratory reforestation procedure will have to be implemented to follow legal requirements. The results also show that the municipality of Pereiras presented – from 1996 to 2008 – a slight regression in the area of natural forest; that the municipalities of Areiópolis and Pratânia will have to increase the reforestation rate over the regeneration rate of the effective natural forest area between 1996 and 2008 in order to achieve the 20% of total area with natural forests or forests which will not be explored – not taking into consideration, though, future farming increments. Still, Areiópolis will have to implement it the fastest. The results also show that the municipality of Itatinga – and, to a lesser extent, the municipality of Pardinho – will need to employ a lower implementation rate than the one verified in the effective regeneration of forests between... Could we be looking at an object across a magnifying glass without perceiving the sudden image inversion - from virtual and erect to real and inverted - when the object moves away from the lens to a place a little farther than the focal distance? In this article we show that this effectively happens, as well with some eyeglasses lenses, like common reading glasses.

- Abstract
The field includes both gold-bearing quartz veins and replacement zones in banded iron formation. The main style of mineralisation in the eastern area is shear-related quartz vein deposits containing pyrite, coarse chalcopyrite and galena. The veins are up to 1.5 m wide and the shear zones locally attain widths of 5 m. The alteration assemblage for granitic-hosted mineralisation is sericite+/-carbonate, quartz and minor pyrite, while chlorite, biotite and epidote are more prevalent in mafic units. Recent mapping has indicated that wider (up to 25 m) shear-hosted deposits are characterised by thin, discontinuous and often boudinaged quartz veins. Known occurrences are largely within mafic to ultramafic remnants where biotite alteration locally becomes intense. In gneissic rock the alteration may include silicification. Kinematic indicators within the shears show an oblique- to almost dip-slip movement. No such major structural control as the extensive Saza shear zone which encloses or is related to most major deposits in the western portion of the goldfield was previously known in the east, but the Mukwimba (Shoga), Ngwilio Hill, Usangu and numerous other reefs and shear zones appear to occur within a broad, pervasive zone of NW-trending structures. Although no basic exploration has been undertaken in the area, the recent spate of artisan mining has identified numerous deposits and often exposed the underlying shear and vein ores., The field includes both gold-bearing quartz veins and replacement zones in banded iron formation. - Abstract
The field was exposed by uplift-induced erosion, which revealed the quartz reefs and formed the placers. The reefs are localised in shear zones near granite margins, most commonly as en echelon systems of quartz lenses up to 1 000 ft long and traceable for up to 2 miles. The gold commonly occurs with pyrite, less often with chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; some mines had great difficulty with galena, producing bullion with as much as 99% Pb. Much of the placer gold consisted of coarser grains, the record nugget weighing 127 lb and containing 1 025 oz Au. Lack of water led to the development of dry-blowing, at first by mouth but later by mechanised fans. Reef mines were better supplied, as the water table was high. Gold production rose from 1 010 oz in 1923, the year of discovery, to 12 383 oz in 1928, but there was no road access until 1935; in 1936, 40 338 alluvial oz and 6 994 reef oz were produced but by 1941, when reef production peaked at 34 368 oz, alluvial production had dropped to 14 389 oz. By 1950 there were fewer than ten reef mines operating. Most alluvial output was by Africans, whose payment of rewards to their own labourers gave way to purchase of stolen gold from each other's. Underground mining was by workers of many nationalities and backgrounds; most of the profits went to a few, with many making serious losses. The largest reef mine closed in 1956 and and the last Europeans withdrew from the Lupa in the early 1960s., The field was exposed by uplift-induced erosion, which revealed the quartz reefs and formed the placers. - Abstract
The authors present two related papers on the Lupa goldfield. In the first, entitled Re-Os molybdenite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite geochronology, Lupa goldfield, southwestern Tanzania: tracing metallogenic time scales at midcrustal shear zones hosting orogenic Au deposits, p.1591-1613, 94 refs., it is reported that the sampling of broadly contemporaneous sulphides from five shear zones (Kenge, Mbenge, Porcupine, Konokono, and Dubwana) suggests that mylonitic shear zones represented an interconnected network of midcrustal permeable fluid conduits at c.1.88 Ga that permitted transport and deposition of gold. Comparison between Re-Os sulphide and high-precision U-Pb zircon ages for the granitic host rocks provides unequivocal evidence for sulphidation concomitant with magmatism. However, the range of Re-Os ages argues against an intrusion-related deposit model whereby metallogenic fluids were solely derived from an individual intrusion. The study's identification of a regional c.1.88 Ga metallogenic event that occurred concurrently with eclogite-facies metamorphism during the Ubendian orogenic cycle provides one of Earth’s earliest temporal links between subduction-zone processes and orogenic Au deposit formation during the Palaeoproterozoic. The second paper, Structural controls on orogenic Au mineralisation during transpression: Lupa goldfield, southwestern Tanzania, p.1615-1640, 88 refs., shows how Au mineralisation in the western Lupa goldfield was associated with transpression and reverse sinistral slip along a network of steeply S-dipping shear zones with non-Andersonian geometries. Variations in fluid overpressure and fault/shear zone rheology can explain the differences in Au mineralisation along the different ore trends. Results suggest that spatial, in addition to temporal, variations in fluid overpressure are to be expected during Au mineralisation, which implies a certain degree of structural compartmentalisation during orogenic fluid flow and metallogenesis., The authors present two related papers on the Lupa goldfield.
