This study aims to discuss the role of an anthropological perspective in architecture as well as structural reflection on the dynamics of architecture in relation to society. An anthropological lens can be used to study architecture as a manifestation of human culture to understand betterthe complex interactions between humans, the environment, and social structures. This research takes an anthropological approach to understanding architecture and investigates the dynamics of architecture as a cultural product influenced by social, technological, economic, and political changes. An analysis of the physical structure of architecture that reflects social structure, symbolism, and representation in architecture as a reflection of society is used to explain structural reflection. Case studies encompass vernacular, religious, colonial, and sustainable architecture. Understanding architecture from an anthropological standpoint allows humans to recognize the significance of cultural identity, the preservation of traditions, and their relationship with the physical environment as an art form in development.

MODERN movement (Architecture) ,CULTURAL identity ,CULTURAL property ,DATA management ,URBANIZATION - Abstract
This paper's primary goal is to propose a methodological strategy to document and protect modern heritage buildings in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is essential because these structures are part of the cultural heritage and identity of Saudi Arabia, considering the rapid urbanization and development taking place. Protecting modern heritage buildings is also essential to increase public appreciation and understanding of modernist architecture and valuable resources of the city's culture and identity. This study's objectives fall into two categories: it aims to provide a review of the relevant literature to develop a theoretical framework to examine and document Riyadh City's significant modern heritage buildings, and it aims to provide an examination and documentation of these structures. To ensure systematic and structured project documentation, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, inductive and deductive approaches, a chronological approach, data management techniques, workshops, and fieldwork methods are utilized. Over 1300 potential modern heritage buildings were identified and categorized into typological groups and building types that historians, architects, planners, designers, and policymakers can use to document and present Saudi Arabia's rich modern heritage effectively. Of the 1300 buildings, this study was able to identify more than 170 buildings, which were later recognized as the primary modern heritage buildings for Riyadh City in the study timeline (1950–2000). The concept of “holiday village” has recently turned fifty. Holiday villages are found in non-urban areas, rich in nature-based and human-made resources. By implementing the planning principles of this type of accommodation, Romania has also developed its tourism supply over the past years, currently providing twelve holiday villages which are spread throughout the country. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of these holiday villages both from a tourism analysis perspective and in relationship with territorial identity. In order to achieve this goal, a series of quantitative and qualitative methods were employed, starting with the analysis of statistical databases in parallel with the review of bibliographic materials, and the observation and analysis of the official websites of these accommodation structures, respectively. It turned out that three counties (Brașov, Suceava and Tulcea) hosted 50% of the existing holiday villages in Romania, confirming once again the importance of local tourism potential derived from geographic location and cultural heritage. Based on various tourist needs and preferences, a wide range of activities and services both basic (accommodation and catering) and additional ones (entertainment and leisure, business, etc.), which became available for different groups of guests were also identified. Eventually, a multicriterial analysis, including aspects related to architectural elements, landscape integration and links to local or regional traditional values highlighted five levels of authenticity according to which almost half of the examined units established a stronger connection with the territorial identity of the geographical-historical regions, which hosted these establishments.

SUSTAINABLE architecture ,SUSTAINABLE development ,RURAL development ,CULTURAL values ,ECONOMIC change ,SOCIAL sustainability ,SOLIDARITY ,LOCAL culture - Abstract
The concept of sustainability has long characterized the rural architecture of Iran. However, today, social and economic changes have brought about developments in rural architecture, as modern villages have focused less on the concept of sustainability. Old rural architecture has valuable sustainability indicators which can be utilized in new designs. This research investigates the component affecting sustainability creation and its representation in the architecture of Armian village. This research was applied in terms of goal and descriptiveanalytical in terms of methods. First, library sources were reviewed to determine the effective components. Then, a theoretical framework was presented after the content analysis, as the village of Armian was examined following field studies and analytical methods. Results indicated that social, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions contributed to rural architecture sustainability. As regards the social sustainability dimension, such components as social identity, sense of attachment, social interactions, vitality and social security; as regards cultural sustainability dimension, such components as participation and solidarity, cultural heritage and capital, value and cultural value; as regards economic sustainability dimension, such components as the type of material, effectiveness and avoiding nullity, employment and subsistence; and as regards environmental sustainability dimension, such components as an adaptation with the climatic conditions, dynamism and adaptability, respect and preservation of the environment were effective. These components and indicators have been noted in the Armian village fabric and housing. The Armian village architecture is an example of local, sustainable architecture in conformity with the rural life's identity, climate, culture and lifestyle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Architectural acculturation has a significant and uniform impact on modern architecture. However, the misunderstanding of this phenomenon tends to occur due to its inability to match its context's function and meaning. Therefore, this study aims to examine the acculturation of local and non-local architecture in mosque buildings. Previous research only focuses on mosque buildings as a syncretic factor, with none on the attributed topic. The research object is the Merah Panjunan Mosque in Cirebon City. This object was chosen based on the building age, the acculturation phenomenon that occurs, and because it is one of the cultural heritage in Cirebon City. The research method includes redrawing the Merah Panjunan Mosque's entire mass in three and two dimensions, making it easy to parse based on architectural anatomy. The study object's decomposition is intended to facilitate analysis in each unit of architectural elements, which is read based on the elaboration of the balance and orientation principles. The analysis results are interpreted in the conclusion section with the Merah Panjunan Mosque capable of displaying local and non-local architecture characterized by Javanese and Chinese architectures as well as a Hindu temple. The dominant composition of the Merah Panjunan Mosque acculturation is shown in the roof elements. Therefore, this research implies that Merah Panjunan acts as a reference for architectural design with the acculturation concept.

The ancient ksar of Chinguetti was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is located in West Africa, on one of the most important caravan trading routes, in use from the eighth century until the beginning of the twentieth century. The trans-Sahara traffic – mainly based on products such as salt, gold and ivory – also fostered cultural development along the route. As commercial, cultural and religious contacts were established over the centuries, manuscripts were constantly being written, copied, carried, bought and sold. Following a failed attempt to build a museum to house Chinguetti’s most important manuscripts in 2000, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) decided to restore every traditional library within the ksar, the actual places where the ancient manuscripts have been kept for generations. Terrachidia NGO has spearheaded the Libraries Preservation Project, using traditional building techniques and local materials and labour to carry out these restorations.

Efforts to display the expression of the functions and local identities of buildings are merely copying ornamental variations of vernacular architectural elements. As a result, the relation among function-form-meaning remain unseen. This study aims to explain the application of the concept of synthesized architectural expressions on government owned buildings. Based on the research objectives, the Mayor’s office building of Kupang City was chosen as the object of this case study. The initial step of this research is to elaborate the theory of archetypal anatomy and the relation of architectural function-meaning-functions. Furthermore, the observation unit is redrawn in three dimensions and analyzed based on ordering principle of balance and orientation. The analysis shows that the interpretation of the appearance of Mayor's office building of Kupang City displays monumental, formal, local expressions and represents democratic ideologies. Interpretation of synthesized expressions occurs in the dominant aspects of local architecture in the elements of the roof, walls and entrance columns. The results of this study confirm that the concept of synthesized expression plays an important role in the midst of change pressure and for the sustainability of architecture nowadays.

This study includes the comparison of the spatial and functional configurations of the two residential buildings constructed in the Republican Period within the traditional residential fabric of Tarsus with the traditional residential buildings in the same place. The plan schemes of the two buildings built in the 1950s in the historical residential area of Tarsus have similarities with the traditional residential buildings. In this context, the two sample structures examined within this study provide an opportunity to evaluate the change and development of spatial and functional organization of residential buildings in Tarsus. In the first part of the study, housing approaches before and after Republic in Turkey is presented; in the second part, two sample buildings are explained. The similarities and differences from the points of spatial and functional organization, and, structure and material usage between the two sample buildings and the Ottoman Period traditional residential buildings are also presented in the second part. In the last part, the sample buildings are evaluated within the context of housing development history and local architecture in Tarsus. These buildings are considered as examples of the evolution of housing structures from traditional residential buildings designed in accordance with the socio-cultural structure of the Ottoman Period, to the apartment buildings developed in parallel with the changed architectural approaches and life style of the Republican Era.

Various climates and geographical variables of iran prompted architectures to design buildings based on principles of vernacular architecture in order to reach the optimal styles which are highly compatible with the climate. In years gone by, Naeen’s hot and arid climate galvanized people into finding an effective way to tackle this adverse climate condition; therefore, a variety of techniques and style of living were taken into place to comply with this situation. As Ab-anbār was used to store drinking water, Yakhchāl were constructed as reservoirs to preserve and store ice. Ice which was produced and stored during the winter and cold months of a year was used in hot months of the year. In the regions that climate is cold enough to maintain ice and snow stable in mountainous area during the whole year; no specific constructions were made to store ice. On the other hand, in arid and hot regions of Iran like Naeen, which have almost long summers with high air temperature, a structure called ice house was constructed based on Iranian architectural style so as to produce, store and preserve ice. The architectural features and physical structures of these constructions provided the chance to preserve ice, stored in the winter, until the end of the summer. Investigations show that despite the features and roles of the Yakhchāls of Naeen,. Nowadays, the reasons behind emergence of these constructions in Naeen per se cannot guarantee the preservation of them on the ground that modern life status is not compatible with the use of these structures. In fact, with the advent of industrial means of producing ice like refrigerators producing healthier ice with better sanitary condition, Yakhchāl have become desolate without any specific uses. This research is conducted by descriptive-analytical methods of study and assessing based on field and library research methods. Yakhchāls of Naeen including three ones located in Mohhamad abad, Baferan and Mohamadiye were placed out of residential area near gardens and farms in order to access water, channeled from Qanat, which is used to produce ice. The process of producing ice in Yakhchāl includes two stages. One of which is producing ice in ice-making ponds which covered by the shadow of walls and the second step is storing and preserving ice in an underground reservoir until a specific time (the summer). The first step is rooted in conformity with nature and circumstance. Avoiding futility and being Content which is one of the main elements of vernacular architecture- in the eye of most experts- can be seen in this step. At first step, with the help of ever-lasting natural forces and without any damages to the environment, the process of producing ice in ice-making ponds, based on indirect cooling down method, was done in very cold nights during the winter. Next step is storing and preserving ice produced until the summer. To fulfill this step without using of electrical or mechanical equipments relying on Costly and Nonrenewable energies, an underground reservoir covered by a clay dome were designed. Choosing this method of architecture to construct the reservoir under the ground and form the dome in a conical shape with material made of clay, made it possible to maintain the internal coldness of the reservoir and prevent ice from being melted.

The historic urban regions and architecture are more than mere materials remained, they are central to how the community see themselves and their architecture identity as individuals, communities and as a nation. In a transient and rapidly changing world, interests are in; “What the local identity of the community architecture is? and how the original identity of the local architecture could be kept during the new rebuilding process in the historic and old regions of the city?” Architecture identity is therefore; an inheritance that helps to define the future architecture by inspiring new ideas and providing solutions to the problems that the community face in the age of globalisation. In this way, historic and old urban regions of the city greatly show the original architecture identity which helps the community to distinguish their architecture from others. This paper studies the distortion of local architecture identity on Sabunkaran Street as a part of the old region and city centre in Sulaimaneyah city in means of style, building materials and architectural elements as a result of the new rebuilding process. The distortion of building materials, styles and elements for the new rebuilt process are compared to the context of the region without subcategorizing each part to specific items. This paper makes a comparative study for the architecture on Sabunkaran Street to show how the local architecture identity of the old region has the risk of distortion as a result of the new rebuilding process done in the last decades. This study aims to keep the local architecture identity of the old urban regions to show the future generations their original architecture identity. The study hypotheses that; new rebuilding process achieved by the individual owners in old urban spots lead to the distortion of local architecture identity if it is not monitored by specialized local authorities.

Rumah Panggong is a form of local architecture in Belitung Island, where there are not many architectural studies focusing on it. This study focused on the spatial aspect, because space is the firstly generated architectural design idea to facilitate activities or society culture before later developed into the form, structure, materials, and so forth. The approach used was qualitative descriptive with emphasis on data collection method using field observations, as well as data analysis method using a coding system, which included open coding, axial coding phase and selective coding phase. Through this research, it was found that Rumah Panggong is formed into 3 parts, namely mother room, suyok or porch, and cesspit. These 3 parts form the typo-morphology of the building. The basic spatial ideas of Rumah Panggong can be identified by its functionality, effectiveness, flexibility and most essentially its mother room existence.

Contemporary architecture is a reflection of social status in any nation with respect to economy, traditions and culture. In addition, religious buildings express the spiritual and cultural identity of each society. The mosque is one of the most symbolic buildings of Islamic societies. Unlike historical and monumental mosques, contemporary mosques reflect the available technologies, social and cultural needs, environmental requirements as well as economic status of local society. This study focuses on analyzing the architectural features and communal role of contemporary mosques. Through the study, a framework for classifying and analyzing the design features of contemporary mosques was developed. This framework could serve as a base for surveying, identifying, analyzing and classifying information about contemporary mosques in terms of their components, area, number of floors, architectural details and style. Moreover, links were established between the features of the mosque and its functional, communal and symbolic role in its community. This framework would be useful in developing the main characteristics of contemporary mosques in terms of their social, cultural, symbolic, architectural and constructional technologies. HOT springs ,ARCHITECTURAL design - Abstract
Thermal springs located almost everywhere in the world; face us as different architectural works in different cultures, climates, topographies and materials. It is seen that some of these works were designed with a holistic approach to the natural environment. The most important output of the ecological architecture is the designs made specifically for the site where the facility is located. Region-specific design increases the value of the work. In this study, it is aimed to add to the literature, how to apply the ecological design parameters in Thermal tourism facilities (TTFs). A field study has been done for this. No previous studies on the selected facilities have been found in the literature. Therefore, this work is a unique study. Located in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, Kös, Golan and Bagin thermal hot springs were found to be worth examining in this study because of the natural environment-friendly life. In this context, the existing facilities in the region are examined in the light of ecological principles and solutions are suggested about what should be considered in the way of being an ecofacility. First, natural environment data that are the most important parameters of ecology are examined. Information on the spatial use and physical condition of the facilities was determined by observations, interviews made with users and facility owners, photographs, sketches and architectural surveys. The information obtained reveals the ecological successes and failures of these plants. Thus, a guideline was created for the new facilities of the future. In this study, it is aimed that eco-identity of the regions with thermal source will be evaluated as an escape alternative from the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Residential façade role as a social filter can be considered as a candidate one of its basic functions which express its role to achieve control of the social interaction between the resident and his surroundings and within acceptable limits that achieve the necessary privacy to him. There is no doubt that this role may like a lot of problems with the fundamental changes in the pattern of urban housing during the previous century, which has impacted on the pan-end ability to express local environmental privacy. With the availability of local studies that have dealt with this problem and presented the detailed results to solve, but it remained limited impact and the application by the problematic dealing with the priorities of the contemporary needs of the resident in the housing reality. This research tries to view and critique the previous local studies on solving this problem and discuss the constraints applied in the reality of housing, and offers by taking advantage of the facade analysis in the actual residential product, the proposed realistic indicators that can be applied to improve the social performance of the infacade in future housing projects.

The settlements are designed, built and used by people. The way of deployment and location, its growth and its changes depend on the behaviour and lifestyle of its inhabitants. Housing is one of the basic human needs and is part of the overall rural identity, and any changes in its pattern will create a widespread transformation in the various dimensions of the life of rural households. For this reason, design for villagers requires comprehensive planning based on regional knowledge. The purpose of the research is to investigate new rural construction and its adaptation to the local architecture of pond villages. Various tests such as Cochran formula, t test, Pearson test and multiple regression test were used to study the adaptation of new construction with local architecture. The results of the research show that local architecture has the greatest effect on the survival of residents in the village and their satisfaction.

This study starts with an evaluation of the different terminological perspectives of sun breaker in the world and emphasizes the frequency of the usage the element worldwide. In this process international reflections of sun breaker elements are analyzed through examples from different geographies. Then the usage of this element in Turkish architectural practice is considered. In this study international context and a lens through Turkey is examined through a chronological narration. In this narration a reading through vernacular architecture and modern architecture interpretations is conducted through both of these perspectives. Therefore, in addition to the functionality of this element its usage in the façade organizations in time is tried to be understood. In the historical journey of the sun breaker element, it is understood that firstly functionality was a priority but later on it became an aesthetical façade element with its form in the architectural repertoire. Besides, the different structural systems based on the holistic and partial uses are discussed. This study, which focuses on many cases with sun breakers and discusses the role of this element in the architectural practice aims to emphasize on the variations of the use of the sun breaker and introduces a comparative narration. So, this research that highlights both the private and public buildings with sun breakers focuses on the iconic buildings dating back to different periods in architectural literature. Consequently, this study underlines the fact that the usage of this element in the 21st century has changed rapidly and the historical references has weakened, so that the element started to be evaluated in a similar way in many regions., Bu çalışma güneş kırıcı öğenin dünyadaki farklı terminolojik karşılıklarını ele alarak başlar ve bu öğenin dünya genelinde sıklıkla kullanıldığını ortaya koyar.

Bu çalışmanın yöntem ve çıktıları benzeri çalışma alanlarının ekoturizm stratejilerinin belirlenmesinde örnek model oluşturabilir., Ecotourism, unlike mass tourism, is a sustainable alternative tourism that can protect natural and cultural landscape values and historical sources of sensitive landscapes and ensures its ecological integrity. Ecotourism, which takes into account the balance of conservation and use, supports the sustainable use of resources. In this context, raising awareness of visitors and local people may lead to a decrease in urban pressure, visitor impact and environmental problems on natural and cultural landscape values that provide resources to ecotourism. Within the scope of this research, Masuleh village, which is close to the Hazar Sea, surrounded by Alborz mountains and forests, has cultural and historical heritage value and preserves its local architectural structure, has been determined as the study area. These natural and cultural landscape values of Masuleh, which was included in the list of historical heritage by UNESCO in 2007, are under threat due to the confusion of authority in the management structure. The aim of this study is to determine the ecotourism criteria that have ecotourism resources for Masuleh and to determine the ecotourism strategies that ensure the sustainability of these sensitive landscape values. In this context, a field study and literature review was carried out, and a questionnaire integrating the Best-Worst Method (HCM), which is one of the multi-criteria decision-making methods, and SWOT (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) Analysis applied with local people and experts. As a result of the survey, the ecotourism criteria consisting of 4 main and 20 sub-ecotourism criteria were ranked according to their priorities. As a result, the criterion of opportunities criteria "inclusion in the UNESCO's Historical Heritage Site tentative list" was determined as an ecotourism strategy that should be evaluated as a priority. The methods and outputs of this study can set an example in determining the ecotourism strategies of similar study areas.

The present work constitutes the first part of a multi-parametric research for the representation of damage scenarios in Lefkada old town. The study area lies in the most seismically active zone of Greece and has suffered several devastating earthquakes. Most of its old buildings were built by local practices incorporating elements of earthquake resistance and have been designated as particular earthquake resistant constructions by the European Council Cultural Heritage Unit. The most recent earthquake of $$\hbox {M}_\mathrm{w}=6.2$$ that occurred on 14 August 2003, located about 10 km from the town, caused moderate damage to its buildings and substantial geotechnical failures. Investigations on the coseismic effects yielded extensive literature information, which initially motivated our investigations. This paper deals with the empirical vulnerability assessment of the buildings in Lefkada old town based on basic structural characteristics such as the type and material of the structural system, the period of construction, the number of storeys, etc. Those characteristics, primarily available from the most recent available census were further exploited by an in-situ survey, during which all 1,420 buildings in the old town were inspected. Following, each building was indexed with an EMS-98 vulnerability class. Expert decisions on the damage scale due to the 14 August 2003 event were reassessed and converted into damage grades of EMS-98. The full data set was also analysed in ArcGIS producing detailed maps of the 14 August 2003 earthquake damage distribution by structural typology and vulnerability class in Lefkada old town. - Abstract
[EN] The present work deals with the study on the state of conservation of a property of local interest known as ¿Puerta señorial de Benetússer¿, ¿Puerta de acceso al huerto del antiguo palacio señorial de Benetússer¿ or ¿Puerta de Favara¿ (c. XVII), located in the town of Benetusser (Valencia). In this sense, historical and stylistic information is collected to understand the monument in its surroundings. Furthermore, the materials that make up the cultural property are analysed through tests carried out in situ (karsten pipette test, peeling test, HCl drop test), and morphological characterisations of samples taken. The most significant result is the existence of multiple mortars of different compositions and states of conservation, some with high states of disaggregation and zero porosity, which in turn are affecting the rest of the materials. At the same time, the degradation agents were examined and the pathologies affecting the three materials present, stone, exposed brick and mortar coating, were determined, observing the interactions between them. The most important degradation agent observed was the presence of water, both by capillary action from the field and by runoff. This causes important alterations such as delamination and efflorescence. Also, anthropic actions such as vandalism or previous incorrect interventions have a strong effect on the deterioration of the monument. In the same way, a proposal of intervention that minimizes the pathologies is proposed, composed mainly by the elimination of elements that disturb the esthetic of the monument at the same time that they damage it and their restitution by others more respectful with the cultural property. Later, guidelines for preventive conservation are recommended, to avoid the reappearance of new damage. Finally, actions for the revaluation of the heritage are proposed in order to promote the social activation of the heritage in the population.

Bu çalışmanın kurgusunu Alexander’in Pattern Language kitabından referansla yapı kalıp dilini aktaran Kemal Aran’ın bakışı şekillendirmiştir. EN: Communication has been going on since the beginning of the world and language is the easiest form of communication. Through language, we express our feelings and ideas in the context we like. Language cannot be divided into its components and expressions. It is a system that regulates things and relationships outside of it. Context plays an important role here. Architecture is a method we use for communication; therefore, it has its own language and formation process. Similar to the language, architecture also does not consist of independent and discrete concepts. When architects or audiences try to identify architectural objects, they find themselves in a semantic framework, such as those who use language. When the readability of an architectural structure is examined; it is not possible to dissociate it from the area in which it is located, its location, its materials and its surroundings. Therefore, Odunpazarı Houses located in the Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir were selected as the area for the study. The abstract thought of this study has been shaped by the approach of Kemal Aran, who referred to Alexander’s “Pattern Language” book and conveyed the structure pattern language. Similarities, differences, morphological structures and language of these constructions were identified and templates were created. This study was carried out by reading the literature and supporting it with on-the-spot findings.

İzmir’in kültürel ve mimari mirası olarak varlığını sürdüren dini yapıların daha önce kent turizmi açısından incelenmemiş olması literatüre katkı sağlayacaktır., Aim: Conservation and revealing as a touristic value of religious buildings which are cultural and local heritage, will contribute to the tourism of Izmir. Therefore, the aim of the study is to emphasize the elements that will support such an approach and to create a theoretical framework that will contribute to the development of these buildings and their historical environment which is a value for local architecture. Method: Within the scope of the research, firstly the literature will be examined in order to establish the theoretical background of the study. Sustainable approaches, such as conservation of natural environment, climate-oriented practices, minimizing consumption, have been implemented for centuries in traditional and primitive design and life criteria.Sustainable architecture consists of criteria suitable for logic, while local architecture reaches these features through trial and error method. For this reason, traditional lifestyle and architectural design criteria are the right source for a sustainable life and architecture. In this study, Hassan Fathy architecture was evaluated through traditional architecture-sustainability relationship based on the definitions of traditional architecture and sustainable architecture. The works of Hassan Fathy have a significant potential with the traditional architectural texture preserved partially. In this study, it is aimed to create modern design codes with those learned from the evaluation of Hassan Fathy's works with sustainable design criteria. Sustainable architectural criteria, the physical and social characteristics of Egypt through the works of Hassan Fathy, were tried to be suggested to the solution of today's needs. Qualitative research methods are used in the study. The research covers the process of collecting, analyzing, interpreting and reporting the data in a planned and systematic way in order to find reliable solutions to the problem. While studying the sustainability of Hassan Fathy's works, sustainability criteria were used in the VerSus (Vernacular Heritage Sustainable Architecture) project and in the light of the data obtained, it was concluded that socio-economic sustainability was dominant in the sustainability principles of Hassan Fathy.Throughout his career, Fathy aimed to use local architecture and create humanist designs while designing his works. The structures he designed in this direction are also important in the scope of sustainable architecture. The design criteria used in the light of the data obtained from the works of Hassan Fathy are thought to be guiding for today's architect designs in terms of sustainability principles.

Sustainable living is basically being able to construct the balance of protecting and using natural resources. In this way, the heritage value transferred to future generations is formed by the interaction of people and the environment. This is also very important for “architecture”, which expresses sustainability and is an important tool. In addition to the continuity of sustainable architecture and cultural heritage, it is possible to create economic resources and detect sociological data. Local architecture, which bridges the past and the present and best reveals the relationship of people with each other and their environment, has a place in many parts of the world with its rich diversity. Local architecture has an active place in contemporary society with its cultural, socio-economic and concrete identity values. These structures are protected by various strategies and methods and transferred to future generations. One of these methods is adaptive re-use. Within the scope of adaptive re-use, the study examined the principles of sustainability through eight second-degree registered İslamköy residences in the Demirel Complex of İslamköy village in Atabey district of Isparta province in Turkey. Thus, by evaluating three basic principles, environmental, economic and social, in terms of the continuity of local architecture with the sub-parameters determined, it was aimed to reveal the benefits and damages caused by the complex to the settlement in terms of sustainability. In this way, the change and transformation created by re-functioning with the renewal of building materials and typology was examined.

This paper attempts to analyze the experience of change in Saudi contemporary architecture with special emphasis on the ways that people have used to adopt new forms in their home environment. The aim is to understand the general reactions of people towards the change over time. Identity is a social system, and unless we view it from this perspective we cannot understand how people realize it in their home environment. In this sense, we are looking for the relationship between people and their architecture rather than explaining the reasons behind any changes identified.
