In Central America and the Caribbean, periods of increased aridity that correspond to the Terminal Classic Drought (TCD; 1200–850 cal yr BP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA; 500–100 cal yr BP) have been documented in many paleoclimate records. Compound-specific hydrogen (δD alkane) and carbon (δ13C alkane) isotopic compositions of n -alkanes in lake sediment can be used to interpret changes in paleoprecipitation and terrestrial paleovegetation, respectively. To assess the climate forcing mechanisms that drove the TCD and LIA, we established a multidecadal to centennial-scale late-Holocene reconstruction of precipitation variability and vegetation change at mid-elevation on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica, developed from new δD alkane , δ13C alkane, and geochemical analyses and previous pollen and microscopic charcoal analyses from a sediment core from Laguna María Aguilar. Laguna María Aguilar is a freshwater lake located at 770 m elevation on the Caribbean slope of the Cordillera Central. During the TCD, δD alkane data for María Aguilar indicate relatively wet conditions compared to the mean δD alkane value for the entire record. Other proxy records for the TCD indicate that the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and sites above 3400 m near the continental divide experienced generally drier conditions than mid- and low-elevations on the Caribbean slope. We conclude that the TCD may have been driven by both Pacific and Atlantic climate-forcing mechanisms. During the LIA, the Laguna María Aguilar δD alkane record indicates an increase in hydroclimate variability, with some of the highest recorded δD alkane values (driest conditions) during the earliest portions of the LIA, but conditions were not persistently dry for the entirety of the LIA. Based on regional paleoclimate records overall, the LIA drought appears to be more clearly expressed on the Caribbean slope than on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica, indicating that the LIA was perhaps driven primarily by Atlantic Ocean conditions and climate dynamics. ABSTRACT The Jurash archaeological site is located on Wādī Bīshah near the city of Khamīs Mushayt in southwestern Saudi Arabia. It has a fort and other remains from the pre‐Islamic period (third century bc to early seventh century ad) and a settlement with two mosques from the Early Islamic period (early seventh to early 11th centuries ad). A survey was conducted for the purposes of identifying the building materials and determining their geographic sources, and also investigating the building methods. It was found that all materials were locally derived and that the fort's outer wall is a typical example of South Arabian fortifications of the first millennium bc. An examination of the site stratigraphy revealed that Jurash has been repeatedly inundated by destructive flash floods from Wādī Bīshah. The timing of these events was largely controlled by global climatic fluctuations, including the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shallow-sea environmental variations in the eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) have been related to monsoon variability, poorly ventilated intermediate water, and primary productivity changes. To understand these conditions, benthic foraminiferal assemblages, oxygen isotope ratios, and total organic carbon content have been examined in sediment Core SK291/GC13 from the EAS. We aim to retrieve decadal to centennial time-scale changes in past oxygenation and paleoproductivity during the last 7400 calibrated years before the present (cal yr BP). Our proxy data suggest that the oxic benthic foraminifera species were dominant during ∼7400–6000 cal yr BP. The change from oxic to dysoxic occurred during ca. 6000–3500 cal yr BP, and transition from dysoxic to suboxic environmental conditions happened at ca. ∼3500 cal yr BP. These changes are contemporaneous with weakening of the Indian summer monsoon beginning at ∼5500 cal yr BP which culminated into a major arid phase so-called ca 4.2 ka event in the Indian subcontinent. The EAS experienced low productivity during the early phase of our studied interval (∼7400–6000 cal yr BP) and higher productivity in the middle Holocene (6000–3000 cal yr BP), as revealed by the total organic carbon and benthic assemblages. Furthermore, productivity increased in the warm period and decreased in the Little Ice Age on a decadal scale. The spectral analysis of total organic content and suboxic species indicates a 23-year Hale (solar) cycle during the last millennium, indicating a close relationship between solar activity and monsoon variability. The strengthening of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation perhaps amplified due to increased solar activity in the last millennium, which influenced the climate of the EAS. The study highlights paleo-oxygenation shifts based on benthic foraminiferal assemblages, which are crucial for understanding changes in the oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) and their potential impacts on marine ecosystems. Rainfall over mainland Southeast Asia experiences variability on seasonal to decadal timescales in response to a multitude of climate phenomena. Historical records and paleoclimate archives that span the last millennium reveal extreme multi-year rainfall variations that significantly affected the societies of mainland Southeast Asia. Here we utilize the Community Earth System Model Last Millennium Ensemble (CESM-LME) to quantify the contributions of internal and external drivers to decadal-scale rainfall extremes in the Southeast Asia region. We find that internal variability was dominant in driving both Southeast Asian drought and pluvial extremes on decadal timescales although external forcing impacts are also detectable. Specifically, rainfall extremes are more sensitive to Pacific Ocean internal variability than the state of the Indian Ocean. This discrepancy is greater for droughts than pluvials which we suggest is attributable to external forcing impacts that counteract the forced Indian Ocean teleconnections to Southeast Asia. Volcanic aerosols, the most effective radiative forcing during the last millennium, contributed to both the Ming Dynasty Drought (1637–1643) and the Strange Parallels Drought (1756–1768). From the Medieval Climate Anomaly to the Little Ice Age, we observe a shift in Indo-Pacific teleconnection strength to Southeast Asia consistent with enhanced volcanism during the latter interval. This work not only highlights asymmetries in the drivers of rainfall extremes but also presents a framework for quantifying multivariate drivers of decadal-scale variability and hydroclimatic extremes. Prehistoric Polynesian voyaging into high latitudes with landfall in Antarctica remains a widely credited proposition. We examine it through archaeological and environmental evidence from the Subantarctic region of the southwest Pacific, focussing upon an extensive archaeological site at Sandy Bay on Enderby Island. Combining a new set of radiocarbon ages with former, older, ages we show that the site is now within the same rapid expansion phase in which South Polynesia was first colonised. Radiocarbon ages across the site indicate a single continuous settlement, probably of some decades. Consideration of limiting factors in Subantarctic settlement, including of seafaring capability and critical resources, suggests that the site was about as far south as prehistoric habitation could be sustained and was probably vacated at the onset of the Little Ice age (LIA) in the late 14th century. An absence of prehistoric remains on islands further south also suggests that Polynesian exploration reached a boundary 2000 km short of Antarctica. Fire is the largest natural disturbance factor in the boreal forest and plays a critical role in the composition, structure, and succession of stands and landscapes. The island of Newfoundland, located in eastern Canada, is subjected to a greater maritime influence, which may result in longer fire return intervals. The limited data on the fire regime does not account for interactions between fire, vegetation, and climate throughout the Holocene. We used sediment cores from Arnold's Pond, Terra Nova National Park, which covered the last ~11,800 cal. yr BP, to investigate these interactions. We recognize 4 pollen zones and macroscopic charcoal analysis detected 45 local fire events. The 250-year mean fire return interval associated with the current vegetation is longer than a previous estimate for the park, but significantly shorter than other estimates for the island. Our mean fire return interval is within the range of fire estimates from Quebec with similar vegetation. Our results suggest that the fire regime was primarily influenced by vegetation and climate. The transition to an open forest from a shrub tundra resulted in increased fire activity and fire frequency, which were likely driven by additional fuel on the landscape, but could have also been influenced by unknown climatic factors. We identified several examples of changes in the fire frequencies and/or charcoal accumulation that coincided with regional climate shifts, but we also identified a non-synchronous change. The non-synchronous shift to drier conditions resulted in a ~500-year time lag between peak Pinus strobus abundance and maximum fire frequency. Synchronous shifts in fire activity and/or fire frequency coincided with the 8200 event, Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little Ice Age. We also noted a decrease in fire frequency between 2600-1500 cal. yr BP that coincided with similar changes in the fire frequency from ~3000-1000 cal. yr BP in Que bec. Soil erosion across South Africa's drylands occurs widely in the form of gullies and badlands (locally termed dongas) that have developed in colluvium and in valley fills along incised rivers. This erosion has commonly been attributed to land mismanagement, particularly since European settlement, but natural factors such as soil properties, local base level fall and climate change have also been invoked. To disentangle human and natural factors, we use optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, supported by documentary and archaeological evidence, to constrain the timing and causes of donga formation at three widely spaced sites across interior South Africa. At all three sites, the exposed stratigraphy indicates that hillslopes and floodplains underwent net sediment accumulation during most of the late Quaternary, and that present‐day deep erosion is of a magnitude unprecedented probably within at least the past 100 ka. OSL ages indicate that the onset of erosion at each site significantly pre‐dates European incursion and instead was broadly coincident with abrupt climatic changes that occurred during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA, ~ad 900–1300) and Little Ice Age (LIA, ~ ad 1300–1800). Based on correlation with palaeoclimate proxy records, we propose that erosion was triggered by abrupt hydroclimatic oscillations during the MCA, and continued during the LIA in response to climate‐driven, large floods. At these sites, soil type and local base level falls exert secondary controls on the specific locations, processes, rates and depths of erosion. In other areas of South Africa, clear links between land mismanagement and soil erosion have been demonstrated, but for sites where detailed investigations have yet to be undertaken, these findings challenge an often default assumption that soil erosion is necessarily attributable to human factors. Holocene prodelta lobes are key sedimentary archives of environmental change that can be used effectively for high-resolution palynological investigations, as they: (i) consist almost entirely of mud, (ii) represent stratigraphically expanded successions, and (iii) are strictly related to river dynamics, thus reflecting vegetation changes in river catchments. In this study, we focussed on the ~20 m-thick prodelta succession of the modern Po Delta (NE Italy), fed by two river branches (Volano and Goro) that were mostly active during the past two millennia, a period of rapid acceleration of natural resources' exploitation and climate variability. Forty-eight samples with mean temporal resolution of 50 years were analysed. Eleven ecological groups and four pollen zones were identified, with distinct peaks of the secondary-primary pollen ratio marking major floods during the Volano-Goro lobe switching and the Little Ice Age. Five vegetation phases were detected since the 1st century AD. In the framework of a patchy natural-cultural landscape, patterns of wetland expansion/contraction reflect the combined effect of cool-wet oscillations (LALIA – Late Antique Little Ice Age), land management (reclamations) and river avulsion. Forest dynamics document warm conditions during the so-called 'Roman Climate Optimum' and 'Medieval Warm Period', although minor cool-wet episodes occurred in tune with solar minima, and bipartite climate conditions (cool-moist followed by cool-dry) characterized the LALIA. Since the 14th century, despite human-induced forest shrinking, peaks of montane vegetation followed a centennial-scale cyclicity likely influenced by solar minima and major plagues. In recent years, much evidence has been presented on the 4.2 ka event. A review of 317 palaeoclimate papers shows that dry conditions were common during the event, especially from Eastern Mediterranean to India. The 4.2 ka event was not, however, a global drought event. Wet conditions were reported especially for central/northern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. The 4.2 ka event is typically characterized either as short (4.2–4.0 ka) or long (4.4–3.8 ka) episode, possibly developing over an extended interval of time, in keeping with the North Atlantic forcing and correlating with the Bond 3 event of ice-rafted debris. This forcing is understood to drive a southward migration of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), resulting in decreased rainfall over most of the Asian monsoon region, with possibility that an interplay of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has modulated the global circulation. Cold conditions were also reported but less frequently, in comparison to other Bond events such as the 8.2 ka event, Dark Ages Cold Period and Little Ice Age. Some high-resolution records show a double peak structure of which two anomalies are tree-ring dated to 4.14–4.05 ka and 3.97 ka. Accurately and precisely dated high-resolution records indicative of various climatic variables, especially outside of the traditional study region (Mediterranean–Middle East–India–China), including reconstructions of the ENSO and NAO histories and ITCZ migrations, are crucially needed for rigorous examination of the global scale characteristics of the 4.2 ka event and its forcings. The Southern Alps experiences rapid bedrock uplift and intense surface processes like erosion and deglaciation. We quantify how the erosion and deglaciation contribute to the ongoing vertical motions using geophysical models. The erosional unloading uplift is found to be 0.5–1.5 mm/yr throughout the central Southern Alps, whereas the recent deglaciation may locally produce uplift up to 1–3 mm/yr. The estimated unloading uplift accounts for 10%–40% of the GNSS‐observed uplift. After correcting the unloading uplift, the GNSS‐observed uplift can be explained by about 4–6 mm/yr dip‐slip motion on the Alpine fault, which is 10%–50% below previous geodetic estimates. Hence, unloading uplift must be evaluated when interpreting geodetic observations in tectonically active mountain ranges subjected to intense surface processes. Plain Language Summary: As surface processes such as erosion and deglaciation abrade mountain ranges, the removal of mass relieves the mass loading on the Earth's surface, turning on the solid Earth rebound where the focused mass removal has/had been operating. This rebound, known as unloading uplift, may reach up to 3–5 mm/yr in the Southern Alps in New Zealand where surface processes such as erosion and deglaciation are rapid and intense. This unloading uplift can account for about 10%–40% of the geodetically observed ongoing uplift. Hence, we must correct the unloading uplift to get reliable tectonic interpretations of the geodetically observed uplift. Humans have occupied the Alps over most of the Holocene. Yet, continuous records on the impact of using montane resources and landscapes are scarce or confined to segregated areas or periods. We present a high-resolution geochemical record of the last 4800 years from the ombrotrophic peatland Piller Moor in the Central Alps (Tyrolean Oberland, western Austria), using inductively coupled mass plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) and highly efficient inter-calibrated portable X-ray fluorescence analysis (pXRF). Fluctuations of metal enrichment factors (EF) for lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and antimony (Sb), accumulation rates of anthropogenic lead (Pb anth AR) and mineral matter (MAR), based on titanium (Ti), are in line with archaeological and pollen evidence for human presence and environmental change. Periods of intensified, erosive land use are indicated by MAR around 4400 cal BP, 3400 cal BP and, very prominently, at 2400 cal BP. After low MAR in the early Middle Ages, soil disturbances reappear around 1200 cal BP (750 AD), after 200 cal BP (1750 AD) and during the 20th century AD. We found evidence that metallurgy was practised in the area as early as 4450 cal BP, again from 3500 to 2900 cal BP and episodically between 2400 and 1400 cal BP. The Central Alps were presumably a source of increased Pb-emissions in the post-Roman period from 1500 to 1400 cal BP (450–550 AD). Generally, our findings suggest that mining predates archaeological and historical evidence. Following a continuous increase since the Middle Ages, atmospheric Pb EF and Pb anth AR peak around 1980 AD. The record of mineral atmospheric input illustrates the notable impact of human activities on soil erosion and dust entrainment in the Central Alps. Furthermore, links between Little Ice Age cold phases and reduced human impact and mining are established. Our high-resolution peat-geochemistry data quantifies atmospheric deposition of mineral matter and Pb, which act as proxies for landscape evolution and metallurgy on a local and regional scale. The middle of the first millennium AD in Sweden witnessed significant changes in the archaeological record, prompting various discussions about the underlying causes. This paper reviews the research developments surrounding the global climate cooling, which was caused by severe volcanic eruptions in AD 536/540 and is referred to as the Late Antique Little Ice Age or Fimbulwinter, and its potential impacts, with a specific focus on Swedish Iron Age societies, drawing upon published climatic and archaeological data. Furthermore, it discusses the research gaps that impede a comprehensive understanding of the potential relationship between the AD 536/540 event and socioeconomic changes in Iron Age Sweden. Advances in reconstructing the East Asian monsoon have provided important insights into the natural climate variability in Asia during the pre-instrumental period. However, there are still unresolved paleoclimate issues that necessitate the use of geological proxy data to further our understanding of past climate changes. This study focused on core B13, located in the muddy area of the North Yellow Sea (NYS), to investigate the evolutionary history over the past 1500 years and reconstruct the records of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and Yellow Sea warm current (YSWC). The mean grain size of sediment ranged from 4.2 Φ to 5.6 Φ, with the sorting coefficient ranging from 1.9 to 2.2, indicating poor sorting. The C–M pattern showed a limited range of values, with the M values being between 33 and 83 μm and the C values being between 165 and 287 μm, suggesting uniform-suspension transport. The L* index ranged from 40.41 to 44.12, while the a* and b* indexes ranged from 0.55 to 1.78 and 2.86 to 5.94, respectively. A stable and relatively strong sedimentary environment is indicated through a comprehensive analysis of the C–M plot, triangular plot, the relationship between the mean grain size and sorting, and the changes in grain-size and color parameters. The sedimentary evolution in the muddy area of the NYS over the past 1500 years can be categorized into three distinct stages. In this study, proxies for the EASM and YSWC were extracted using the VPCA method from the sediment grain size and diffuse spectral reflectance (DSR) data, respectively. The reliability of these proxies has been confirmed through comparison with other validated proxies. The results indicated that the strength of the EASM and YSWC also exhibited three stages, corresponding to the Dark Ages Cold Period (DACP), Medieval Warm Period (MWP), and Little Ice Age (LIA), respectively. On a centennial scale, the correlation between the EASM and YSWC was predominantly negative. This research validates the reliability of the VPCA method for paleoclimate reconstruction, contributes important climate records in a special muddy area, and provides a new perspective on how to eliminate temporal errors in verifying the correlation between the two climate systems. The Qilian Mountains (QLM) act as an "ecological security barrier" in western China, impacting the downstream ecosystems and water resource utilization. However, the hydrological evolution of the QLM during the last millennium remains controversial, and their ecological response to climate change is poorly understood. We present a pH record based on the brGDGTs (branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers) of a 14C-dated sediment core from Lake Maozangtianchi in the QLM. We combined this record with element contents determined by scanning XRF and grain size to reconstruct the summer monsoon precipitation variability over the last 900 years. We also reconstructed the history of eco-environmental changes from the total n -alkane contents. On centennial scales, local precipitation exhibited peaks during the intervals of 1100‒1300 CE and 1750‒2000 CE, as well as between 1400‒1750 CE. Additionally, abrupt decreases in precipitation occurred during the transition from the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) to the Little Ice Age (LIA) (1300‒1400 CE). This pattern coherent with other hydroclimatic records from the monsoonal margin of northern China, likely resulted from the combined impact of the El Niño‒Southern Oscillation on tropical Pacific sea-surface temperatures and the meridional shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. In addition, a coupled relationship between plant biomass in the Lake Maozangtianchi watershed and fluctuations in monsoon precipitation was observed, with higher plant biomass during 1100‒1200 CE, 1750‒1900 CE, and 1950‒2000 CE, and lower biomass during 1200‒1400 CE and 1900‒1950 CE. However, during 1400‒1750 CE, plant biomass exhibited a minor increasing trend, deviating from its usual correlation with monsoon precipitation. Despite precipitation usually being the primary climatic factor influencing plant biomass in the QLM, during the LIA, nutrients transported by dust and decreased evapotranspiration became pivotal in bolstering plant growth. Patagonia is a unique area for climate studies, exposed to the strong Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds (SWW) and modulated by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Patagonia is also affected by volcanic eruptions of the Andean Mountain Range, and is rich in lacustrine environments, which are ideal for paleocological and paleoclimatological reconstructions. Sediments of Patagonian lakes provide an excellent opportunity to study the responses of aquatic communities to major climatic and environmental events in still pristine freshwater ecosystems. Here, we present a high-resolution paleolimnological reconstruction using testate amoebae and chironomid assemblages and compare it with organic and inorganic sediment geochemistry (Ca, K, Ti, N, TOC, TOC/N, δ15N, δ13C) from a sediment core of Laguna Polo (49°S, Santa Cruz, Argentina) covering the last ca. 1300 years. Our results imply a warm-dry and productive environment from around 1300–1400 CE, a cold and less productive environment from ca. 1400–1700 CE, broadly corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA). The latter period is followed by high volcanic activity between ca. 1700 and 1960 CE. The tephra layers are known from other records in the vicinity and are preliminarily attributed to the eruptions of the adjacent Lautaro Volcano. A warm-stenothermic chironomid assemblage indicates a progressive increase in temperature in the most recent time after the last eruption, attributed to Lautaro Volcano in 1960 CE. Tota is an Andean lake located in the Altiplano of the Eastern Andes of Colombia where socio-politically hierarchical societies of the Herrera and Muisca, flourished for millennia. To them, the lake and surrounding forest were places used for diverse of activities including religious rituals. In this study we produced a multi-proxy paleolimnological reconstruction using diatoms, isotopes, and geochemistry, to try to understand the lake's pathways of change in response to natural climatic variations and anthropogenic activities. The diatom record is dominated by tychoplanktonic Staurosirella dubia and planktonic Aulacoseira species including species A. cf lirata, A. granulata, A. distans, and A. ambigua. Diatoms were grouped into functional groups and used to infer limnological changes that were further complemented with the geochemistry of the sediments to reconstruct the past environment. Results show three main periods in which the lake changed significantly, these are dated from ~800 to 1200, 1200 to 1500, and 1500 to 1900 CE. A correlation with the archeological record of the region, ethnohistoric accounts and climate suggests that these changes occurred simultaneously with changes in archeological stages, the Spanish arrival, and more recently by the industrial revolution, and the Little Ice Age. Instrumental data set have revealed several summer precipitation patterns in eastern China, being summarized as "tripole," "dipole" and "coast" modes. The former two have been found to persist at different time scales, leaving the latter unclear in geological records. Here we present 1300‐year hydroclimate records in a tropical maar lake in the southern coast of China using archeal lipid GDGTs, which can reflect lower water redox conditions largely regulated by lake water depth. The down‐core GDGTs reveal a relatively drier condition during the medieval climate anomaly compared to the Little Ice Age, in‐phase with other records in southeast coast of China but opposite to the inland region, hence demonstrating a persistent "coast" mode in eastern China. The thermal state of equatorial Pacific is suggested to play an important role in shaping the "coast" mode by modulating the location and strength of the western Pacific subtropical high and tropical typhoons. It is well‐known that summer precipitations in eastern China show spatial differences. A seesaw pattern of summer precipitations between the southeast coast and the inland region of China, called "coast" mode, has been proposed from modern observations. However, whether this "coast" mode persists in the past remains unexplored. Here, we present a 1300‐year lake‐level record based on GDGTs, a suit of archeal lipids, in a coastal lake of southern China. The result shows a dry medieval climate anomaly and wet Little Ice Age. This result is consistent with other records in southeast coast of China, but in contrast with those in the inland region, thereby proving the persistent of the "coast" mode in the last millennium. Andean glaciers are losing mass rapidly but a centennial‐scale context to those rates is lacking. Here we show the extent of >5,500 glaciers during the Little Ice Age chronozone (LIA; c. 1,400 to c. 1,850) and compute an overall area change of −25% from then to year 2000 at an average rate of −36.5 km2 yr−1 or −0.11% yr−1. Glaciers in the Tropical Andes (Peru, Bolivia) have depleted the most; median −56% of LIA area, and the fastest; median −0.16% yr−1. Up to 10 × acceleration in glacier area loss has occurred in Tropical mountain sub‐regions comparing LIA to 2,000 rates to post‐2000 rates. Regional climate controls inter‐regional variability, whereas local factors affect intra‐region glacier response time. Analyzing glacier area change by river basins and by protected areas leads us to suggest that conservation and environmental management strategies should be re‐visited as proglacial areas expand. The impact of latitudinal variations in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) on northern Andean hydroclimate during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA; 950–1,150 CE) and Little Ice Age (LIA; 1,300–1,850 CE) is uncertain. Synthesis of two new lacustrine paleoclimate records from the Eastern Colombian Andes with existing circum‐Andean records shows that effective moisture anomalies were synchronous and in phase across the tropical Andes during the last millennium. During the MCA, when the ITCZ was shifted northward, topographically controlled responses in the northern Andes to vigorous atmospheric convection resulted in low precipitation and high evaporation, while precipitation was also reduced in the southern tropical Andes. During the LIA, precipitation decreased in the northern Andes as the ITCZ migrated southward but was offset by cooling that lowered evaporation, establishing high effective moisture. In the southern tropical Andes, the southward ITCZ position simultaneously strengthened precipitation, increasing effective moisture. MCA‐like responses to continued warming trends could similarly reduce northern Andean precipitation while increasing evaporation, thereby lowering effective moisture and possibly reducing water resource availability. Wet conditions in the northern Andes during the LIA were the result of cool atmospheric temperatures that reduced evaporation and increased effective moisture despite low precipitation. This suggests topography and temperature played important roles in the northern Andean hydroclimate and that further warming could reduce effective moisture through topographic precipitation blocking and increased evaporation. Europe experienced severe heat waves during the last decade, which impacted ecological and societal systems and are likely to increase under projected global warming. A better understanding of pre-industrial warm-season changes is needed to contextualize these recent trends and extremes. Here, we introduce a network of 352 living and relict larch trees (Larix decidua Mill.) from the Matter and Simplon valleys in the Swiss Alps to develop a maximum latewood density (MXD) chronology calibrating at r = 0.8 (p > 0.05, 1901–2017 CE) against May–August temperatures over Western Europe. Machine learning is applied to identify historical wood samples aligning with growth characteristics of sites from elevations above 1900 m asl to extend the modern part of the chronology back to 881 CE. The new Alpine record reveals warmer conditions in the tenth century, followed by an extended cold period during the late Medieval times, a less-pronounced Little Ice Age culminating in the 1810s, and prolonged anthropogenic warming until present. The Samalas eruption likely triggered the coldest reconstructed summer in Western Europe in 1258 CE (-2.32 °C), which is in line with a recently published MXD-based reconstruction from the Spanish Pyrenees. Whereas the new Alpine reconstruction is potentially constrained in the lowest frequency, centennial timescale domain, it overcomes variance biases in existing state-of-the-art reconstructions and sets a new standard in site-control of historical samples and calibration/ verification statistics. In the western Great Lakes region of the United States, late prehistoric and early historic Indigenous fields are often difficult to investigate because their archaeological signatures are faint and easily destroyed. They have been identified largely via rare remnants of raised fields and historical records. With the majority of Indigenous fields destroyed, important aspects of cultivation remain ambiguous, especially the ecology of cultivated areas. In addition to archaeological indicators of field location, the choice of specific environmental settings (prairie, wetland, upland forest, etc.) can be encoded in the stable isotope ratios of cultigens. Stable carbon‐ and nitrogen‐isotope ratios of maize kernels and wood charcoal from the Middle Grant Creek site (11WI2739), an early 17th century village in northeastern Illinois, are used to better understand agricultural practices during one of the coldest periods of the Little Ice Age. The Koksu River valley is located in the Pamir‐Alay mountain range and contains 25 glaciers larger than 1 km2 and numerous smaller glaciers. The largest glacier in the catchment is Abramov Glacier with a current surface area of 22.55 km2 (in 2022), which was extensively monitored between 1965 and 1999, and resumed in 2011. The long and detailed mass balance time series provide, among other information, benchmark climate variables for the Pamir‐Alay range. We report 10 new cosmogenic 10Be exposure dates of glacial moraines directly deposited by Abramov Glacier to extend the glacial history of the valley. Six boulders indicate that the Local Last Glacial Maximum occurred at 17.1±1.0 ka. Four boulders suggest a Little Ice Age (LIA) glacial advance around AD 1750. Secular glacier mass balance reconstructions suggest a progressively negative mass balance since the LIA advance. The decrease in mass balance accelerated in the last quarter of the 20th century. Results from repeated ground penetrating radar (GPR) measurements suggest that Abramov Glacier lost about 403 million m3 of ice volume between 1986 and 2018. Based on the reconstruction of the glacier surface, the corresponding equilibrium line altitude, which is closely correlated with the mass balance, increased by about 70 to 80 m during this period. Our results also suggest that Abramov Glacier has become increasingly out of equilibrium with the climate over the last two decades. This is supported by repeated GPR measurements of the tongue area, which indicate a dramatic decrease in glacier area and ice volume over the period 1986–2018. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present chironomid-based reconstructions of mean July air temperature changes over the last 2000 years from Lake Latoriței (1530 m a.s.l.) in the Southern Carpathians. A multi-proxy analysis was performed along a 58 cm long sediment core and two training sets were used for quantitative July air temperature reconstructions: the Eastern-European (EE, 212 lakes) and the Finnish-Polish-Carpathian (FPC, 273 lakes). The transfer functions had a coefficient of determination (r 2) 0.88 and 0.91 with a root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) 0.88°C and 1.02°C. Despite possible biases resulting from methodological problems and the ecological complexity of the chironomid response to both climatic and environmental changes, the agreement of the temperature reconstruction of Lake Latoriței with other alpine records suggests that the transfer function successfully reconstructed past summer temperatures between 750 and 1830 CE. Biases in the temperature reconstruction in the period before 750 and after 1830 CE were likely caused by increased abundance of rheophilic and semi-terrestrial chironomid species related to increased inflow activity before 750 CE and local land use changes after 1830 CE, which was also indicated by increasing deforestation and increasing lake productivity in the pollen and diatom records. Our results suggest that the region experienced a warm period between 750 and 1360 CE, and a cold period between 1360 and 1600 CE followed by fluctuating summer temperatures until 1830 CE. These events were associated with the so-called 'Mediaeval Warm Period' (MWP) and the 'Little Ice Age' (LIA), respectively. The inference models reconstructed a decrease in July air temperatures by 0.7°C–1.1°C during the LIA relative to the warmer MWP. We also demonstrated that the FPC training set gives better results, supporting that local/continental training sets are efficient to detect weak amplitude summer temperature changes in the Late-Holocene. We present a high-resolution record of environmental changes during the Mid-Late Holocene obtained from a lake sediment core covering the past 4.87 cal kyr BP in the Schirmacher Oasis, East Antarctica. The magnetic signal of Lake L6 was found to be primarily controlled by catchment-derived ferrimagnetic minerals. The period between 4.87 and 3.35 cal kyr BP is marked by several episodes of cold and warm conditions. Warm and wet conditions prevailed in the region from 3.35 to 2.43 cal kyr BP. Magnetic susceptibility values remained generally low indicating the pedogenic formation of fine magnetic grains. The high values of the chemical weathering indices reflected the warm and wet conditions conducive to chemical weathering. A transition to cold and dry conditions was observed at around 2.43 cal kyr BP, representing the Neoglacial cooling, with high values of magnetic concentration-dependent parameters. Following the Neoglacial period, a return to warm and wet conditions was observed at 1.63 cal kyr BP, coeval with the Medieval Climate Anomaly. Our record shows a Late-Holocene cooling marked by a sudden increase in magnetic susceptibility values, which could represent the Little Ice Age, followed by a shift to warmer conditions near the core top. Over the past several decades, increasing climate instability in the Sierra Nevada, California, expressed primarily as reduced winter precipitation and higher temperatures, has led to more frequent drought. High-altitude lakes in this region have been characterized as pristine ecosystems, but growing evidence suggests that they are responding acutely to climate change. To address this, we analyzed the diatom assemblages of two 210Pb dated sediment cores (Gull and June Lakes) from the eastern Sierra Nevada with the aim of assessing their sensitivity to and timing of responses to climate change at the end of the neoglacial (~1450 CE to ~1850 CE) and identifying how climate drivers can impact diatom communities. The nutrient cycles of both lakes have been disrupted by changes in thermal stratification, driven by increasing temperatures, as interpreted from the shift from a Stephanodiscus corruscus dominated ecosystem to a Stephanodiscus minutulus dominance. In this case, the June Lake (the deeper lake) diatom assemblage shifted from an assemblage representative of well mixed conditions to one representative of a stratified system before Gull Lake as a response to increasing temperatures and a strengthened thermocline. We relate the asynchronous change in the thermocline stability to basin morphology, where the deeper lake with a deeper thermocline is more sensitive to increasing temperatures. Further, generalized additive models (GAMs) allowed us to identify the onset of ecological change in both lakes, pointing to the termination of the Little Ice Age (LIA; ~1850 CE), revealing an acute response to changing climate. Detailed palaeogeographical studies of the accumulative fan in the Serteyka River valley in W Russia and underlying biogenic deposits were carried out. The base of a representative core of biogenic sediments in the distal zone is dated to 1291 BC, while its top to 1631 AD. In this paper, palynological, plant macrofossils, Chironomide and Cladocera, geochemical, geochronological and sedimentological analysis were performed. Four phases of biogenic deposition were distinguished by pollen and geochemical analyses. Two of them coincide with the climatic fluctuation during Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little Ice Age. During the formation of the fan, overbank deposits were accumulated also, indicating numerous and intense floods, which are in line with the trend observed for other sites in this region. The accumulative fan is formed by lower, middle and upper deluvia and agricultural diamicton in its top. All units have specific sedimentological and geochemical features as well as low admixture of plant macrofossils. The beginning of the formation of this relief form dates back to the second half of the 17th century AD, and the end of the accumulation falls on the second half of the 18th century AD. Our work suggests that natural conditions had an impact on the formation and development of studied accumulative fan, however, the decisive factor causing the intensification of the slope processes were related with deforestation resulted from strong human impact, which was marked in palynological and macrofossils analyses (e.g. increase in the contribution of plants macrofossils related to agriculture). A recent study published in the Journal of Biogeography provides evidence of a century-long drought on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, between 1570 CE and 1720 CE. The drought was identified through sedimentary gaps and the desiccation of Lake Raraku, one of the island's freshwater sources. The study suggests that the drought coincided with major ecological and cultural transformations, including deforestation and a shift from the moai cult to the Birdman cult. The potential causes of the drought, such as shifts in the subtropical storm track or the El Niño Southern Oscillation, are still being debated. The study also highlights the importance of the Environment-Human-Landscape Feedbacks and Synergies framework for understanding the complex interactions between climate, vegetation, and human activities on the island. This study presents a high-resolution record of δ15Nsed, which serves as a proxy for water column denitrification and oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) intensity, from the Soledad Basin in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific OMZ. The Soledad Basin δ15Nsed record is compared to the Pescadero Slope and Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) δ15Nsed records to gain insight into regional variations in the ETNP OMZ. During the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA; 950–1250 CE), Soledad Basin, Pescadero Slope, and SBB records exhibit coherent trends suggesting that there was general water column oxygenation stability. During the Little Ice Age (LIA; 1350–1850 CE), Soledad Basin and SBB showed a similar decreasing trend in δ15Nsed values while the Pescadero Slope δ15Nsed exhibited an increasing trend until values abruptly declined between 1740 and 1840 CE. We suggest that increased δ15Nsed variability and the different trends at the Pescadero Slope during the LIA are due to the influence of the North American monsoon (NAM), which can suppress upwelling when enhanced and result in OMZ contraction. The decoupling between the Soledad Basin, SBB, and the Pescadero Slope could also be due to the increased influence of enriched 15NO3− subarctic waters in the California Current System. Since each site is influenced by local productivity, basin morphology, and regional atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns, we suggest that assessing OMZ fluctuations from multiple sites provides a more comprehensive view of regional OMZ dynamics in response to climate variations. Himalayan glaciers have shown a retreating trend since the Little Ice Age (LIA) in response to climate change. As glaciers are crucial for water security and ecological sustainability, it becomes necessary to map and monitor the glacial status from time to time. The present study is focused on the study of Haptal glacier located in the Bhuzas sub-basin of Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir (UT), India, between the Pir-Panjal and Greater Himalayan range using satellite data. Results revealed that the glacier retreated continuously at progressive rates between 1980 and 2020, with an annual retreat rate of 28.25 ± 1.85 m a−1. During 1999–2009, the highest (67.93 ± 2.8 m a−1) retreat rate was observed. Maximum surface velocity was estimated during 1999–2000 (38.5 ± 4.7 m a−1), while the glacier experienced the minimum surface velocity during 2019–2020 (32.5 ± 3.7 m a−1). The glacier has lost its area (22.60 ± 8.18%), glacial length (10.95 ± 0.7%), and glacier ice volume (1.47 ± 0.56 km3; 29.63 ± 11.47%) during the study period. Modelled mean ice thickness using Glabtop2 for the glacier is estimated at 129.28 ± 13 m. The accumulation area values showed a decreasing trend of 10.89 ± 0.56 km2 to 8.15 ± 0.3 km2, indicating a change of 25.05 ± 5.8% between 1999 and 2020. Upward migration of snow line altitude from 5148 m (1999) to 5198 m (2020) indicates enhanced melting and glacier loss during the study period. The study further revealed that there is an overall decreasing trend in specific mass balance. "Forces of Nature: New Perspectives on Korean Environments" is an edited volume that explores the role of nature in Korean history. The book covers a wide range of topics, including ecology, energy systems, and climate events, and examines how these forces shaped the relationship between humans and their environment. The chapters in the book span different time periods, political contexts, and geographical locations, shedding light on the co-production of nature and people in Korean history. While some contributors take a climate-determinist perspective, the editors aim to put human actors in their physical and material surroundings. The book is organized thematically rather than chronologically or geographically, and includes chapters on imperial interventions, responses to environmental crises, processes of dispossession, and reclaiming life through environmental movements and sciences. During an interdisciplinary study of the mire "Torfowisko pod Małym Śnieżnikiem", a very old specimen of the Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) was encountered. The aim of the present work was to perform a detailed examination of this tree, to compare it to other spruce trees on the mire, and to provide support for establishing protection for this tree stand. Tree ring cores were sampled at 1.3 m above ground using a Pressler borer, in two field campaigns: June and July 2023, the latter campaign aiming to find the oldest trees. A total of 46 trees were sampled, yielding 84 measured radii. Tree ring widths were measured down to 0.01 mm under a stereomicroscope. The oldest sampled tree yielded a total of 370 tree rings in the two radii, representing the period 1653–2022. The average tree ring width for this oldest tree equals 0.33 mm/year, and shows low values (on average 0.19 mm/year) for the period 1742–1943, i.e., during the Little Ice Age cooling. Changes in the tree ring width coincide with periods of cooling and warming in the nearby Tatra Mountains. The oldest tree does not stand out from other trees from the population with respect to height or trunk diameter. A comparison of the age of this tree to the oldest spruce trees in Poland indicates that it is one of the longest living specimens of this species. Considering the natural character of the stand, the remaining flora, and the peat-forming processes taking place within the mire "Pod Małym Śnieżnikiem", we argue that the mire should become protected by the law as soon as possible in order to preserve this valuable high mountain habitat. As a feature of global warming, climate change has been a severe issue in the 21st century. A more comprehensive reconstruction is necessary in the climate assessment process, considering the heterogeneity of climate change scenarios across various meteorological elements and seasons. To better comprehend the change in minimum temperature in winter in the Jinsha River Basin (China), we built a standard tree-ring chronology from Picea likiangensis var. balfouri and reconstructed the regional mean minimum temperature of the winter half-years from 1606 to 2016. This reconstruction provides a comprehensive overview of the changes in winter temperature over multiple centuries. During the last 411 years, the regional climate has undergone seven warm periods and six cold periods. The reconstructed temperature sensitively captures the climate warming that emerged at the end of the 20th century. Surprisingly, during 1650–1750, the lowest winter temperature within the research area was about 0.44 °C higher than that in the 20th century, which differs significantly from the concept of the "cooler" Little Ice Age during this period. This result is validated by the temperature results reconstructed from other tree-ring data from nearby areas, confirming the credibility of the reconstruction. The Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition method (EEMD) was adopted to decompose the reconstructed sequence into oscillations of different frequency domains. The decomposition results indicate that the temperature variations in this region exhibit significant periodic changes with quasi-3a, quasi-7a, 15.5-16.8a, 29.4-32.9a, and quasi-82a cycles. Factors like El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and solar activity, along with Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), may be important driving forces. To reconstruct this climate, this study integrates the results of three machine learning algorithms and traditional linear regression methods. This novel reconstruction method can provide valuable insights for related research endeavors. Understanding the variability and related dynamic mechanisms of the Indian summer monsoon evolution over the past millenniums is crucial for disaster prevention and mitigation in the context of strengthening global warming. Here, we present a high‐resolution hydroclimate reconstruction over the past 3110 years in northwestern Yunnan Province, southwestern China, based on grain size analysis using the End‐member modeling algorithm and other environmental proxies. The results indicate that the temperature in northwestern Yunnan Province generally decreased since 3110 cal. yr BP, aligning with other temperature records on regional and global scales. Precipitation in the study area remained relatively stable before 1000 cal. yr BP, but exhibited an obvious out‐phase change compared with the temperature records over multidecadal to centennial timescale. While after 1000 cal. yr BP, the precipitation steadily increased, revealing the hydroclimate pattern of notably dry Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and relatively wet Little Ice Age (LIA) in the study area. The decoupling combination of temperature and precipitation spanning the MWP and LIA in southwestern China contrasts with that in the East Asian summer monsoon area and the Indian subcontinent which is also controlled by the Indian summer monsoon, indicating the spatial heterogeneity of precipitation in the Asian summer monsoon region. The discussion about dynamic mechanisms points out that solar activity emerges as a significant factor influencing regional temperature changes, and El Niño‐Southern Oscillation and Intertropical Convergence Zone migration jointly impact the precipitation change in the study area and the hydroclimate discrepancy in the Asian summer monsoon region. Recent amplified climate warming in the Arctic has caused profound changes in terrestrial ecosystems, with the potential for strong feedback on climate change. Arctic tundra landscapes have developed patchy and thin organic soil (peat) layers at the surface that may continue to grow into mature peatlands and become a larger carbon sink under future warming. Here we use paleoecological analyses of multiple soil and peat cores collected from the North Slope of Alaska to document and understand the formation and development histories of tundra peat patches and permafrost peatlands. We find a consistent peat development sequence for peat patches, first from mineral soils to sedge peat during the Little Ice Age, and then to Sphagnum peat during the recent warming with high carbon accumulation rates. These findings suggest that climate cooling is likely critical for the initial peat buildup on tundra soils due to reduced decomposition, whereas climate warming triggers the regime shift into an increased abundance of Sphagnum mosses that are likely central to enhancing their carbon sink capacity. Additionally, peat patches become similar to permafrost peatlands in the vicinity in terms of ecosystem processes and carbon dynamics, and therefore may have developed the same ecohydrological feedback system to maintain their long‐term stability. This study implies that the potential future expansion of peat patches into peatlands may strongly alter the carbon balance of Arctic tundra, supporting the new United Nations Environment Programme's report that calls for incorporating widespread shallow peat into understanding the peatland–carbon–climate nexus. Plain Language Summary: The ongoing trend of global warming has the fastest rate in the Arctic and has caused rapid and widespread environmental changes in the Arctic tundra. A major concern is the warming‐induced permafrost thaw that may destabilize the rich soil‐carbon pools underground, providing positive feedback to further accelerate warming. However, warming may also induce northward expansion of northern peatlands that function as persistent carbon sinks over millennia, just like how northern peatlands colonized boreal and sub‐Arctic landscapes during and after deglacial warming 14,000∼8,000 years ago. If true, new peatland formation may provide negative feedback to mitigate warming. This study focuses on patchy and thin peat layers found on Alaska's tundra and uses paleoecological analyses to understand their histories on the landscape. We find that these peat patches were formed during the cold Little Ice Age, but recent climate warming triggered a shift into dominance of Sphagnum mosses, the major peat‐forming species for northern peatlands. By comparing with permafrost peatlands nearby, we present multiple lines of evidence to argue that tundra peat patches may be transformed into new Arctic peatlands with important carbon‐cycle consequences and recommend future research to further understand such processes with new observational data, laboratory experiments, and model simulations. Glacier mass balance reconstructions provide a means of placing relatively short observational records into a longer-term context. Here, we use multiple proxies from Pinus cembra trees from God da Tamangur, combining tree ring anatomy and stable isotope chronologies to reconstruct seasonal glacier mass balance (i.e., winter, summer, and annual mass balance) for the nearby Silvretta Glacier over the last 2 centuries. The combination of tree ring width, radial diameter of earlywood cell lumina, and latewood radial cell wall thickness provides a highly significant reconstruction for summer mass balance, whereas for the winter mass balance, the correlation was less significant but still robust when radial cell lumina were combined with δ18O records. A combination of the reconstructed winter and summer mass balances allows the quantification of the annual mass balance of the Silvretta Glacier for which in situ measurements date back to 1919. Our reconstruction indicates a substantial increase in glacier mass during the first half of the 19th century and an abrupt termination of this phase after the end of the Little Ice Age. Precipitation plays a crucial role in the global energy and water cycle and has important implications for food, water, and energy security. To enhance our understanding of the water cycle, it is invaluable to have a comprehensive historical record of precipitation. However, obtaining such records, especially for the period before the Industrial Revolution, can be challenging. During the Joseon Dynasty, Korea established a network for measuring rainfall and recorded this information in historical documents known as Seungjeongwon Ilgi and Ilseongnok. Recently, these documents have been digitized, providing us with daily precipitation data for Seoul spanning 130 years, from 1778 to 1907. By combining and analyzing these two documents, we were able to address inconsistencies found in previous studies and improve the quality of the data. Notably, this dataset is free of any missing values, making it the longest daily precipitation record in the world before the Industrial Revolution. Frozen water is the most widespread type of ice present in ice caves and forms ice stalagmites and stalactites as well as floor ice, which is often several meters thick. Organic macroremains are commonly rare in this type of cave ice, which makes it difficult to establish a chronology and severely limits the use of such ice deposits as paleoenvironmental archives. Here, the chronology of such ice deposits in the inner part of the glaciated Eisriesenwelt, one of the world's largest ice caves located in the European Alps of Austria, is determined by a combination of radiocarbon and 230Th dating of cryogenic calcite. The data suggest that this cave ice has formed over the last three millennia, with a marked increase in the average accumulation rate during the thirteenth century, coinciding with the onset of the Little Ice Age in the Alps. Data from a second site closer to the entrance suggests that large parts of this tourist cave were likely ice-free during the Medieval Warm Period and that a substantial part of the ice is probably a relic of the Little Ice Age. The current warming has already penetrated deeper into the cave than during the Medieval Warm Period, although air exchange during the warm season is restricted by a door at the cave entrance. For the lack of historical water ecology monitoring data and the limitations of traditional morphology-based water ecology reconstruction methods, the response mechanism of lake phytoplankton to climate change in the Tibetan Plateau remains unclear. In this study, we reconstructed the succession of phytoplankton community in Lake Gyaring, located in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, since the 6th century by using sediment DNA metabarcoding. We found that the diversity and structure succession stages of phytoplankton community were consistent with the global temperature oscillation events, namely, the Medieval Warm Period (800–1300 CE). Little Ice Age (1300–1850 CE) and Current Warm Period (1850–2000 CE). The community structure dominated by Chlorophyta in the Medieval Warm Period gradually changed to that dominated by Bacillariophyta in the Little Ice Age. However, the Current Warm Period did not observe the dominant community structure of Chlorophyta similar to that of the Medieval Warm Period. This finding may be due to the climate change of the Current Warm Period was influenced by multiple human activities, such as increased anthropogenic aerosols, which promoted obvious weakening of the intensity of the summer monsoon, leading to decreased soil erosion and lake mixing, and thus may trigger a strikingly different aquatic ecosystem compared to that during the Medieval Warm Period. The Little Ice Age (LIA) was a period of most recent glacial advancement and had pronounced cooling effect in the North Atlantic region. Synchronous hydroclimate changes are also reported from the Himalayas, however owing to the heterogeneity within the proxy reconstructions, their relationship with LIA cooling is unclear. Varied topography, huge glacial mass, and multiple moisture sources (both from the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) and the Westerlies) makes understanding of the impact of LIA cooling on this region ambiguous. In this study, we review and assess the existing paleoclimatic proxy records for a comprehensive analysis of the regional response of the Western Himalayas to LIA cooling. Using the existing meteorological reanalysis data for back trajectory analysis for the last 20 years, the Western Himalayan region was classified into three different zones based on the relative percentage of moisture-bearing-wind-source contribution. The upper Western Himalayas receive most of the moisture from the Westerlies, both Middle and Lower Western Himalayas receive majority of rainfall from the ISM, with a relatively higher contribution of Westerlies in the Lower Western Himalayas. Comparison of reconstructions using Principal Component Analysis reveal consistent high moisture conditions during the LIA, with increased winter precipitation and decreased summer precipitation coherently in all the records. Spectral analysis of the available proxy records and various climate forcing for LIA cooling show similar dominant frequency, attesting that the LIA cooling drove the hydroclimate changes in the Western Himalayan region. External forcings such as decreased solar activity and increased volcanic activity caused cooling, influenced the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, and resulted in weaker summer rainfall during the LIA. Synchronous changes in the North Atlantic Oscillations and El Niño–Southern Oscillation records with precipitation records suggest a link between "monsoon breaks" and enhanced Westerly intensity and an intensified winter precipitation in this region. This study reconstructs Mid- to Late-Holocene aeolian activity based on lacustrine sediments from a small pond, Nøkktjønna, situated ~1.5 km northeast from the coast, and stratigraphical investigations of coastal dunes at Fjærvoll, Langøya in Vesterålen, northern Norway. Several methods have been used to reconstruct catchment processes from the lacustrine record, including analyses of lithostratigraphy, organic content, magnetic susceptibility, and grain size, combined with high-resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanning. The content of coarse mineral grains (>125 μm) has been quantified throughout the lacustrine core by manual wet sieving and by conducting threshold analysis from the high-resolution CT-scans. Considering the setting of the drainage basin of Nøkktjønna, the mineral grains (>125 μm) in the sediment core are suggested to have been deposited by aeolian transportation from the nearby aeolian dunes and beach sand during storm events. Five periods of intensified aeolian influx (defined here as influx values above the 90th percentile) are identified. These periods occurred around ~6950, ~6500, ~6100–6000, 5800–5750 and ~350–20 cal. yr BP cal. yr BP, with the last period being the most intense. The increased influx in aeolian sand to Nøkktjønna is suggested to be associated with a combination of changes in the storm track pattern, sea-level fluctuations, conditions of snow cover/frozen surface and increased anthropogenic influence. The highest influx rates are recorded between CE 1600 and 1930, corresponding to the 'Little Ice Age' (LIA), which is a well-known period of high storminess in the North Atlantic region. The Indo-Pacific, a vast biogeographic of Earth, is influenced by both the Indian and East Asian monsoons. Despite its geographical importance, this region has been less studied compared to East Asia and India. Here, we present speleothem records from southern Thailand that cover the last 1500 years, including a hiatus during the Little Ice Age, providing insights into the interactions among climate dynamics, human influences, and ecological responses to climate change. Notably, our records lack the characteristic cold and warm periods observed in other regions, such as the Dark Ages Cold Period and Medieval Warm Period, which may reflect the complexity of the tropical climate system or the region's unique topography. The analysis reveals a link between ENSO multi-decadal variability and hydroclimate conditions in southern Thailand, as evidenced by speleothem δ18O. Furthermore, a comparison between speleothem δ13C and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) indicates significant vegetation changes in the last three decades, corresponding with increased atmospheric CO2 levels and expansion of agricultural land due to human activities during the Current Warm Period. Additionally, our study suggests that an abrupt increase in sea surface temperatures may enhance vegetation growth in the Indo-Pacific by influencing atmospheric circulation and increasing precipitation. Large stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Range have high equilibrium-line altitudes that support glaciers whose Holocene and latest Pleistocene advances are amenable to dating. Glacier advances produced datable stratigraphic sequences in lateral moraines, which complement dating of end moraines. New mapping of glacial deposits on Mount Rainier using LIDAR and field observations supports a single latest Pleistocene or early Holocene advance. Rainier R tephra overlies deposits from this advance and could be as old as >11.6 ka; the advance could be of Younger Dryas age. Radiocarbon ages on wood interbedded between tills in the lateral moraines of Nisqually, Carbon, and Emmons glaciers and the South Tahoma glacier forefield suggest glacier advances between 200 and 550 CE, correlative with the First Millennium Advance in western Canada, and during the Little Ice Age (LIA) beginning as early as 1300 CE. These results resolve previous contradictory interpretations of Mount Rainier's glacial history and indicate that the original proposal of a single pre-Neoglacial cirque advance is correct, in contrast to a later interpretation of two advances of pre- and post-Younger Dryas age, respectively. Meanwhile, the occurrence of the pre-LIA Burroughs Mountain Advance, interpreted in previous work as occurring 3–2.5 ka, is questionable based on inherently ambiguous interpretations of tephra distribution. Glaciers reflect integrated climate signals from inter-annual to centennial timescales. In using glacier extent as a climate-change detector, the challenge is to distinguish the roles of the inter-annual climate variability and long-term climatic change on the glacier change. Using cosmogenic nuclide 10Be dating method and glacier dynamical models, this study numerically reconstructed glacier extents at ~ 1850s AD (latest Little Ice Age period) in the Keqiong Qu I, Keqiong Qu II, Taqiong Qu I, and Taqiong Qu II valleys around the Kuoqionggangri peak, southern Tibetan Plateau, and quantified the effects of inter-annual summer temperature variability and long-term summer temperature change on the glacier retreats since then. Without change in mean annual precipitation, the summer temperature decrease of 0.40–0.53 °C from present was required to sustain the glacier lengths at their respective ~ 1850s AD moraines in the four valleys. The climate inferences from the glacier-climate modeling were similar to reconstructions at other glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau and the changes in long term climate reanalysis (HadCRUT5, BEST and NOAA 20CR v3). Forced by the inter-annual variabilities in summer temperature and annual precipitation, the glaciers had excursions of 150–200 m (5–8% of their lengths) from the ~ 1850s AD moraines. An unusually severe hurricane (Louisbourg Storm) struck Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1757. Historic records describing storm conditions as well as damage to ships and coastal fortifications indicate an intensity beyond any modern (post-1851) Atlantic cyclones striking the same region, yet this storm struck during a cold climate period known as the Little Ice Age (LIA). Its track and timing coincided with a British naval blockade of a French fleet at Fortress Louisbourg during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). This provides a unique opportunity to explore growing scientific evidence of heightened storminess in the North Atlantic despite a colder climate expected to suppress hurricane intensification but which research is increasingly showing to have supported North Atlantic storms of exceptional strength. Weather attributes extracted from the logs of naval vessels scattered by the Louisbourg Storm provided multiple hourly observations recorded at different locations. Wave height and wind force estimates at ship locations were compared to extreme storm surge heights calculated for Louisbourg Harbour and a shipwreck site south of Fortress Louisbourg. Comparing these metrics to those of modern analogues that crossed the same bathymetry reflects landfall intensity consistent with a powerful major hurricane. Historical records show this storm originated as a tropical cyclone at the height of hurricane season and intensified into the northern midlatitudes along the Gulf Stream. Its intensity at landfall is consistent with established seasonal climatological models where highly baroclinic westerlies driven by autumn continental cooling encounter intensifying north-tracking tropical cyclones fuelled by sea surface temperatures that peak in autumn. Stronger seasonal contrasts from earlier and colder continental westerlies in the Little Ice Age (LIA) may have triggered explosive extratropical transition from a large hurricane resulting in a more severe strike. It suggests that tropical cyclones lasting days to weeks and the conditions that generate them are likely masked by cooler historic mean annual to multi-decadal LIA climate reconstructions. The Cordillera Darwin Icefield (CDI) has experienced widespread retreat since the Little Ice Age (LIA, ∼1870 AD). Prior to this, information on outlet glacier dynamics is limited as there are few terrestrial observations and little mapped deglacial evidence, limiting our understanding of CDI dynamics on Holocene centennial to millennial timescales.
