Porous composite battery electrode performance is influenced by a large number of manufacturing decisions. While it is common to evaluate only finished electrodes when making process adjustments, one must then make inferences about the fabrication process dynamics from static results, which makes process optimization very costly and time-consuming. To get information about the dynamics of the manufacturing processes of these composites, we have built a miniature coating and drying apparatus capable of fabricating lab-scale electrode laminates while operating within an X-ray beamline hutch. Using this tool, we have collected the first radiography image sequences of lab-scale battery electrode coatings in profile, taken throughout drying processes conducted under industrially relevant conditions. To assist with interpretation of these image sequences, we developed an automated image analysis program. Here, we discuss our observations of battery electrode slurry samples, including stratification and long-term fluid flow, and their relevance to composite electrode manufacturing.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are employed in a range of devices due to their high energy and power density. However, the increased power density of LIBs raises concerns regarding their safety when subjected to external abuse. The thermal behavior is influenced by a number of factors, i.e., the state of charge (SoC), the cell chemistry and the abuse conditions. In this study, three distinct cylindrical Li-ion cells, i.e., lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA), lithium titanate oxide (LTO), and lithium iron phosphate (LFP), were subjected to thermal abuse (heating rate of 5 °C/min) in an air flow reactor, with 100% SoC. Venting and thermal runaway (TR) were recorded in terms of temperature and pressure, while the emitted products (gas, solid, and liquid) were subjected to analysis by FT-IR and ICP-OES. The concentrations of the toxic gases (HF, CO) are significantly in excess of the Immediate Danger to Life or Health Limit (IDLH). Furthermore, it is observed that the solid particles are the result of electrode degradation (metallic nature), whereas the liquid aerosol is derived from the electrolyte solvent. It is therefore evident that in the event of a LIB fire, in order to enhance the safety of the emergency responders, it is necessary to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to minimize exposure to toxic substances, i.e., particles and aerosol. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) has become a highly sought−after polymer electrolyte for lithium−ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high ionic conductivity, strong mechanical properties, and broad electrochemical stability range. However, its usefulness is hindered by its limited ionic conductivity at typical temperatures (<60 °C). Many researchers have delved into the integration of active fillers into the PEO matrix to improve the ionic conductivity and overall efficiency of composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) for LIBs. This review delves deeply into the latest developments and insights in CPEs for LIBs, focusing on the role of PEO–active filler composites. It explores the impact of different types and morphologies of active fillers on the electrochemical behavior of CPEs. Additionally, it explores the mechanisms that contribute to the improved ionic conductivity and Li−ion transport in PEO−based CPEs. This paper also emphasizes the present obstacles and prospects in the advancement of CPEs containing PEO–active filler composites for LIBs. It serves as a valuable reference for scientists and engineers engaged in the domain of advanced energy storage systems, offering insights for the forthcoming development and enhancement of CPEs to achieve superior performance in LIBs. The electricity sector is witnessing a rise in renewable energy sources and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, posing new challenges for distribution system. Additionally, the surge in carbon emissions resulting from industrialization and population growth continues to worsen global warming and climate change. In response, integrating electric vehicles (EVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) has emerged as a critical strategy, presenting both challenges and opportunities in effective energy management. BESSs offer potential solutions to mitigate these impacts. Furthermore, this review thoroughly explores issues related to lithium‐ion batteries, particularly in the context of EVs and energy management systems (EMS), identifies challenges, and provides recommendations for future research directions. The article concludes by outlining the current extent of investigation in the field of BESS and EV systems to provide researchers with a clear understanding. The escalation of carbon emissions stemming from industrialization and population expansion has worsened the effects of global warming and climate change. To address this challenge, the integration of Electric EVs and energy storage systems (ESS) has emerged as a pivotal strategy. This paper presents an improved rule-based control scheme for battery energy storage (BES) system with the goal of minimising the fluctuation output from photovoltaic (PV) sources while ensuring the operational constraints of BES are regulated at the specified ranges for safety purposes. The control scheme is formulated in accordance with the intended operational limitations of the BES, including charge/discharge current limits and state-of-charge (SOC). The simulation studies were carried out using MATLAB/Simulink to evaluate the effectiveness of an improved rule-based control scheme on the 1.2 MW PV system data acquired from a location in Malaysia. Furthermore, a comparative study on the effectiveness of an improved rule-based control scheme compared with the conventional rule-based control scheme has been carried out. The simulation results show that an improved rule-based control scheme can effectively reduce the fluctuations in the output power of the PV sources and dispatch the output to the utility grid on an hourly basis with an efficiency of up to 94.47%. Finally, the comparison results on the effects of the BESS capacity also illustrate that an improved rule-based control scheme is more effective compared to the conventional rule-based control scheme in the previous study. Recent technological advancements, such as portable electronics and electric vehicles, have created a pressing need for more efficient energy storage solutions. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have been the preferred choice for these applications, with graphite being the standard anode material due to its stability. However, graphite falls short of meeting the growing demand for higher energy density, possessing a theoretical capacity that lags behind. To address this, researchers are actively seeking alternative materials to replace graphite in commercial batteries. One promising avenue involves lithium‐alloying materials like silicon and phosphorus, which offer high theoretical capacities. Carbon–silicon composites have emerged as a viable option, showing improved capacity and performance over traditional graphite or pure silicon anodes. Yet, the existing methods for synthesizing these composites remain complex, energy‐intensive, and costly, preventing widespread adoption. A groundbreaking approach is presented here: the use of a laser writing strategy to rapidly transform common organic carbon precursors and silicon blends into efficient "graphenic silicon" composite thin films. These films exhibit exceptional structural and energy storage properties. The resulting three‐dimensional porous composite anodes showcase impressive attributes, including ultrahigh silicon content, remarkable cyclic stability (over 4500 cycles with ∼40% retention), rapid charging rates (up to 10 A g−1), substantial areal capacity (>5.1 mAh cm−2), and excellent gravimetric capacity (>2400 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1). This strategy marks a significant step toward the scalable production of high‐performance LIB materials. Leveraging widely available, cost‐effective precursors, the laser‐printed "graphenic silicon" composites demonstrate unparalleled performance, potentially streamlining anode production while maintaining exceptional capabilities. The development of batteries used in electric vehicles towards sustainable development poses challenges to designers and manufacturers. Although there has been research on the analysis of the environmental impact of batteries during their life cycle (LCA), there is still a lack of comparative analyses focusing on the first phase, i.e., the extraction and processing of materials. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to perform a detailed comparative analysis of popular electric vehicle batteries. The research method was based on the analysis of environmental burdens regarding the ecological footprint of the extraction and processing of materials in the life cycle of batteries for electric vehicles. Popular batteries were analyzed: lithium-ion (Li-Ion), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), and three-component lithium nickel cobalt manganese (NCM). The ecological footprint criteria were carbon dioxide emissions, land use (including modernization and land development) and nuclear energy emissions. This research was based on data from the GREET model and data from the Ecoinvent database in the OpenLCA programme. The results of the analysis showed that considering the environmental loads for the ecological footprint, the most advantageous from the environmental point of view in the extraction and processing of materials turned out to be a lithium iron phosphate battery. At the same time, key environmental loads occurring in the first phase of the LCA of these batteries were identified, e.g., the production of electricity using hard coal, the production of quicklime, the enrichment of phosphate rocks (wet), the production of phosphoric acid, and the uranium mine operation process. To reduce these environmental burdens, improvement actions are proposed, resulting from a synthesized review of the literature. The results of the analysis may be useful in the design stages of new batteries for electric vehicles and may constitute the basis for undertaking pro-environmental improvement actions toward the sustainable development of batteries already present on the market. As society becomes more reliant on Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, state-of-health (SOH) estimation will need to become more accurate and reliable. Therefore, SOH modelling is in the process of shifting from using simple and continuous charge/discharge profiles to more dynamic profiles constructed to mimic real operation when ageing the Li-ion batteries. However, in most cases, when ageing the batteries, the same exact profile is just repeated until the battery reaches its end of life. Using data from batteries aged in this fashion to create a model, there is a very real possibility that the model will rely on the built-in repetitiveness of the profile. Therefore, this work will examine the dependence of the performance of a multiple linear regression on the number of charges used to train the model, and their location within the profile used to age the batteries. The investigation shows that it is possible to train models using randomly selected partial charges while still reaching errors as low as 0.5%. Furthermore, it shows that only one randomly sampled partial charge is needed to achieve errors smaller than 1%. Lastly, as the number of randomly sampled partial charges used to train the model increases, the dependence on particular partial charges tends to decrease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Precisely characterizing Li-ion batteries is essential for optimizing their performance, enhancing safety, and prolonging their lifespan across various applications, such as electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. This article introduces an innovative nonlinear methodology for system identification of a Li-ion battery, employing a nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) model. The proposed approach integrates the benefits of nonlinear modeling with the adaptability of the NARX structure, facilitating a more comprehensive representation of the intricate electrochemical processes within the battery. Experimental data collected from a Li-ion battery operating under diverse scenarios are employed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The identified NARX model exhibits superior accuracy in predicting the battery's behavior compared to traditional linear models. This study underscores the importance of accounting for nonlinearities in battery modeling, providing insights into the intricate relationships between state-of-charge, voltage, and current under dynamic conditions. A clean energy requirements for bio-power emphasize the need for technological improvements in the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) domain. This exceptionally high-skill field has assumed a crucial role in planning energy-based equipment in recent years, which has replaced fluid electrolytes in electrochemical sensors, fuel cells, and electrochemical devices. Materials based on lithium conduction, which is used to develop electrochemical devices play a major role for the same. Eco-friendly materials have gained a fair amount of importance for facing an energy crisis, the warming of the earth and the very concept of the resilient energy revolution. Extensive study is going on to develop biopolymer-based electrochemical devices, rather than conventional artificial polymers owing to their high cost and ecologically unfriendly nature. Cellulose Acetate having different concentrations of Lithium Chloride (LiCl) has been prepared by the solution casting technique and characterized by XRD. The highest conductivity of 2.136 x 10-2 Scm-1 observed amongst the various samples was achieved by the concentration of 10:90 percent of CA : LiCl. The high amorphicity is based on the results of the powder XRD process. A Lithium ion-based battery has been developed by utilizing the biopolymer electrolyte membrane having the highest conductivity, and its open load voltage, and nominal voltage are estimated. Rice grain-shaped high Mn-doped anatase TiO2(TMO) nanocrystals have been fabricated through redox method at room temperature using several simple chemical reagents. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM & HRTEM). It indicates that the manganese element was successfully incorporated into the anatase TiO2 nanostructure, and the atomic Mn-to-Ti could reach up to 18.2%. We also analyzed the merits and weaknesses of the nanostructured TMO in electrochemistry by dint of some relevant measures. Due to the volatile nature of renewable energy sources (RES), energy storage systems (ESS) are the primary impetus for increased dependence on RES in current power networks. Because of their quick responsiveness and rapid transition from charge to discharge in less than 1 ms, batteries are necessary even in the presence of alternative storage devices. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have demonstrated their viability as ESS for RES. Given the significance of LIBs, it was vital to correctly and effectively quantify their costs in energy systems. Most studies did not offer a true real-world assessment of these batteries' aging but instead averaged their performance indices, which vary substantially depending on the system's working circumstances such as temperature, voltage, state of charge, and current level. Failure to use precise values for each charging/discharging operation might result in disastrous judgments and future techno-economic issues. This paper provides a novel and highly accurate piecewise modeling of LIBs for each charging and discharging operation based on real-world operational conditions. This novel aging model is used for calculating hourly aging and its impact on energy costs. The musical chair algorithm (MCA) is used to determine the optimal parameters' values of the LIB's model and the appropriate size of autonomous hybrid RES. When compared to other optimization techniques, the findings of optimal parameter determination using MCA revealed an 80% reduction in convergence time and better accuracy. The novel proposed aging model of the batteries predicts a 60% cost share of the battery, meanwhile, the existing strategy predicts 51% only. Fulfilling the service life of a Lithium‐Ion battery in each intended application requires further understanding of the cells' lifetime and reliability. Derived from literature, controlling the external pressure constant on Lithium‐Ion battery cells is an inevitable factor to extend the cycle lifetime. Thus, active knowledge of the cells' strain and understanding the impact of an external pressure on the impedance is mandatory to evaluate an optimum pressure to improve the cell performance. This work presents correlations between voltage, strain, and impedance as a function of the applied constant external pressure on a nickel‐rich nickel‐mangan‐cobalt (NMC) lithium‐ion pouch cell. Utilizing a high precision universal testing machine reveals a negligible change of the cells' maximum stroke within the pressure range from 0 to 1000 kPa. Additionally, an optimum pressure between 100 and 300 kPa is revealed by analyzing a series of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data measured at different constant external pressures. Electric vehicles are the future of mobility. Electric vehicles have batteries to store energy and the most common type of batteries used in electric vehicle's battery packs are lithium-ion cells. These cells have very high energy density and dissipate heat during charging and discharging cycles. There is a need to have an efficient cooling system to dissipate this heat. Bigger-size batteries in four-wheelers use liquid cooling to ensure faster charging and longer battery life. Surface cooling and tab cooling are two popular types of liquid cooling systems for battery packs. Surface cooling is a preferred type of cooling system as it is less complex and cheaper, but it creates a temperature gradient inside the cell which is detrimental to cell life. This work proposes tab cooling as a solution to improve the life cycle of lithium-ion cells. Two sets of the battery pack, one with tab cooling and the other without a cooling system were tested under different conditions for multiple fast charging and discharging cycles until their initial capacity was reduced by 30%. Significant efforts are being made across academia and industry to better characterize lithium ion battery cells as reliance on the technology for applications ranging from green energy storage to electric mobility increases. The measurement of short-term and long-term volume expansion in lithium-ion battery cells is relevant for several reasons. For instance, expansion provides information about the quality and homogeneity of battery cells during charge and discharge cycles. Expansion also provides information about aging over the cell's lifetime. Expansion measurements are useful for the evaluation of new materials and the improvement of end-of-line quality tests during cell production. These measurements may also indicate the safety of battery cells by aiding in predicting the state of charge and the state of health over the lifetime of the cell. Expansion measurements can also assess inhomogeneities on the electrodes, in addition to defects such as gas accumulation and lithium plating. In this review, we first establish the mechanisms through which reversible and irreversible volume expansion occur. We then explore the current state-of-the-art for both contact and noncontact measurements of volume expansion. This review compiles the existing literature on four approaches to contact measurement and eight noncontact measurement approaches. Second-life applications for lithium-ion batteries offer the industry opportunities to defer recycling costs, enhance economic value, and reduce environmental impacts. An accurate prognosis of the remaining useful life (RUL) is essential for ensuring effective second-life operation. Diagnosis is a necessary step for the establishment of a reliable prognosis, based on the aging modes involved in a cell. This paper introduces a method for characterizing specific aging phenomenon in Graphite/Lithium Iron Phosphate (G/LFP) cells. This method aims to identify aging related to the loss of active material at the negative electrode (LAMNE). The identification and tracking of the state of health (SoH) are based on Incremental Capacity Analysis (ICA) and Differential Voltage Analysis (DVA) peak-tracking techniques. The remaining capacity of the electrode is thus evaluated based on these diagnostic results, using a model derived from half-cell electrode characterization. The method is used on a G/LFP cell in the format 18650, with a nominal capacity of 1.1 Ah, aged from its pristine state to 40% of state of health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Second-life applications for lithium-ion batteries offer industry opportunities to defer recycling costs, enhance economic value, and reduce environmental impacts. However, cells are affected by numerous aging phenomena which can lead to an acceleration in capacity loss. This paper uses postmortem techniques to compare aging phenomenon in 1.1 Ah 18650 graphite/LFP cells, examining the differences between a pristine cell and three cells aged to 40~30% of state of health (SoH). Macroscopic and microscopic techniques are used to identify aging phenomenon occurring in the cell on both positive and negative electrodes. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) with back-scattered electron (BSE) detector are used to analyze each electrode. These methods are used to analyze the morphology and the material on each electrode. The results show a stable positive LFP electrode whereas numerous deposits and cracking occurred on the negative electrode. A discussion of the appearance of those aging phenomenon is presented. This study conducts a three-dimensional simulation of the temperature of a cylindrical Li-ion battery (LIB) pack with nine cells. The cells are arranged in the pack in square and diamond configurations, and the pack is filled with phase-change materials (PCMs). The airflow enters the channel from two inlets at 90° with respect to the pack and is guided by two blades at the sides of the inlet toward the pack. Arc-shaped and linear blades were used for this study, which was carried out for 2500 s. The results indicate that the square arrangement of batteries, combined with the use of curved blades, has been more effective in reducing temperature. In this configuration, a more uniform distribution of air flow and better efficiency of the PCM in absorbing heat were observed, leading to a significant decrease in the overall temperature of the battery pack. Specifically, compared to the diamond arrangement, the temperature of the batteries in the square arrangement was up to 10 °C lower. This reduction in temperature plays an important role in enhancing the lifespan and safety of the batteries. By using machine learning and providing the optimal model for the maximum temperature of the battery surface, it was shown that this parameter was designed with the model and comparing it with the numerical results had an error of 2.01 %.

Abstract This study was on the use of the market definition paradigm (MDP) to track ageing and temperature effects in lithium–ion cells. This was with a view to using the technique to obtain a sequence of equilibrium voltages from readily available datasets in order to profile the effects of ageing and temperature on cells and batteries. The method employed involved using the MDP with its capability to obtain a sequence of equilibrium voltages for lithium-ion cells. This approach integrated radio incidence with radio geometry, transmission and emergence in a simplified form of the cell’s equilibrium voltage (and amperage). A standard dataset was obtained from the centre for advanced life cycle engineering repository. The data were processed and analysed using Coulomb counting, charging and discharging energy comparison methods on Python 3.8 programming tool and LibreOffice spreadsheet software. Results obtained show a close tracking of ageing and temperature phenomena in the cells studied. A respective maximum and minimum equilibrium voltages of 3.23 V and 3.10 V over two thousand (2000) cycles were similarly obtained for ageing and temperature investigations. The equilibrium voltage shows a downward trend as the battery ages and is more reliable for studies on these cells than the open circuit voltage traditionally used to track phenomena in such cells. In conclusion, typical lithium-ion cells can be classified at begin-of-life using the equilibrium voltage and useful predictions made with respect to end-of-life. This approach is relatively inexpensive, requiring fewer data points and low-cost hardware and extensible to online applications. Graphical Abstract

On the other side, supercapacitors are used in applications which are not so far suitable for these devices. To avoid wrong design and misuse of the supercapacitors it is necessary to correctly understand their properties, key advantages and disadvantages. In this study, we present an innovative, fully automated, and digitalized methodology to optimize the energy efficiency and cost effectiveness of Li-ion battery modules. Advancing on from today's optimization schemes that rely on user experience and other limitations, the mechanical and thermal designs are optimized simultaneously in this study by coupling 3D multi-physical behavior models to multi-objective heuristic optimization algorithms. Heat generation at various loading and ambient conditions are estimated with a physics-based, fractional-order battery cell-level model, which is extrapolated to a module that further accounts for the interconnected cells' heat transfer phenomena. Several key performance indicators such as the surface temperature increase, the temperature variations on the cells, and heat uniformity within the module are recorded. For the air-cooled study case, the proposed coupled framework performs more than 250 module evaluations in a relatively short time for the whole available electro-thermal-mechanical design space, thereby ensuring global optimal results in the final design. The optimal module design proposed by this method is built in this work, and it is experimentally evaluated with a module composed of 12 series-connected Li-ion NMC/C 43Ah prismatic battery cells. The performance is validated at various conditions, which is achieved by accounting the thermal efficiency and pressure drop with regard to power consumption improvements. The validations presented in this study verify the applicability and overall efficiency of the proposed methodology, as well as paves the way toward better energy and cost-efficient battery systems. Lithium salt LiHDI (lithium 4,5-dicyano-2-(n-heptafluoropropyl)imidazolide) is proposed as a solid electrolyte interphase-stabilising additive for lithium-ion batteries, which can be added in a smaller amount than fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) additives. Electrolytes containing either lithium 4,5-dicyano-2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazolide (LiTDI) or battery-standard LiPF6 were tested with various amounts of LiHDI additive. Chemical stability in the presence of water and the thermal stability of LiHDI are on par with LiTDI. LiHDI additive does not negatively affect the properties of electrolytes. Conductivity measurements of solutions, galvanostatic cycling of graphite-LiFePO4 cells at room temperature, cells' cycling at 60 °C, internal cell resistance monitoring during cycling, and XPS analysis of electrodes' surfaces after cycling have been performed. LiHDI, unlike the FEC-VC mixture, does not negatively affect the properties of the electrolyte. Cycling showed improved capacity retention with LiHDI additive with both graphite and LiFePO4 as capacity-limiting electrodes over samples without additives. At elevated temperatures, samples with LiHDI exhibited better capacity retention during cycling than those with FEC-VC. Internal cell resistance can be correlated with capacity retention. The characteristics and performance of lithium‐ion batteries typically rely on the precise combination of materials in their component electrodes. Understanding the impact of this formulation and the interdependencies between each component is critical in optimising cell performance. Such optimisation is difficult as the cost and effort for the myriad of possible combinations is too high. This problem is addressed by combining a design of experiments (DoE) and advanced statistical machine learning approach with comprehensive experimental characterisation of electrode slurries and coatings. An industry relevant graphite anode system is used, and with the aid of DoE, less than 30 experiments are defined to map impact of different weight fractions of active material (80–96 wt%), conductive additive (Carbon Black at 1–10 wt%) and a two‐component binder system (Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) at 1–3 wt% and Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), at 1–7 wt%). Using Explainable Machine Learning (XML) methods, correlations between the formulation, slurry weight percentage (30–50 wt% in water) and coating speed (1–15 m/min) are quantified. Slurry viscosity, while known to depend on the CMC concentration, is also heavily influenced by carbon black and SBR when at high concentration, as is common in research. Viscosity increasing components also improve adhesion, by improving dispersion and hindering binder migration. Conductivity of the coating on current collector is sensitive to the current collector‐coating interface, which makes it a highly useful probe. Improvements in cell capacity are observed with higher viscosity formulations (High weight percentage, CMC content), attributed to reduction in migration and slumping of the slurry on the current collector. SBR had a negative impact at any concentration due to its insulating nature, and carbon black reduces gravimetric capacity when included at high concentrations. The need for energy in various activities around the world is increasing. Batteries come as an important energy solution, among others, for various applications, such as electric vehicles, mass storage for utilities, gadgets, etc. Lithium-ion batteries that are able to produce superior performance are needed. The battery cathode is an important key to the performance of lithium-ion batteries. The battery cathode fabrication factor is one that affects the quality of the battery produced. The thickness of the coating material will determine the amount of active material contained in the cathode, while the calendering process is needed to compress the material in the cathode so that the lithium-ion transfer process in the battery can run more effectively. Based on the research results, the thicker the coating material on the cathode, the greater the capacity value produced. With a coating thickness of 300 µm, the resulting capacity reaches 180 mAh/gr. However, in the life cycle and rate capability tests, the performance stability is not better than the thickness of 100 µm and 200 µm. As for the calendering level, the battery with an optimum decrease in dry thickness is able to have the best performance in terms of capacity, life cycle, and rate capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent rise of lithium-ion battery (LIB) integration into modern society has led to an increase in hazardous scenarios for consumers via battery failure. Thermal runaway (TR) is the primary failure mode of these batteries and results in several potential hazards. The current study focused on characterization of the micro- and nano-particulates that are ejected from a LIB during TR. A state-of-the-art battery failure experiment was utilized to thermally induce TR in a Panasonic NCR 18650B LIB cell at 100% state-of-charge (SoC) in air. Subsequent microscopy and materials analysis techniques were performed on ejecta samples collected from the battery failure experiment. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging results showed a wide distribution of particle geometries and sizes (< 1 µm -- -2 mm). Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses on representative SEM images provided evidence of vigorous mixing and extensive intercomponent reactions within the LIB cell during TR. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses provided additional insight including the key intercomponent interactions, evidence for partial oxidation and decomposition, and the potential presence of undisclosed additives or contaminants. This study was on the use of the market definition paradigm (MDP) to track ageing and temperature effects in lithium–ion cells. This was with a view to using the technique to obtain a sequence of equilibrium voltages from readily available datasets in order to profile the effects of ageing and temperature on cells and batteries. The method employed involved using the MDP with its capability to obtain a sequence of equilibrium voltages for lithium-ion cells. This approach integrated radio incidence with radio geometry, transmission and emergence in a simplified form of the cell's equilibrium voltage (and amperage). A standard dataset was obtained from the centre for advanced life cycle engineering repository. The data were processed and analysed using Coulomb counting, charging and discharging energy comparison methods on Python 3.8 programming tool and LibreOffice spreadsheet software. Results obtained show a close tracking of ageing and temperature phenomena in the cells studied. A respective maximum and minimum equilibrium voltages of 3.23 V and 3.10 V over two thousand (2000) cycles were similarly obtained for ageing and temperature investigations. The equilibrium voltage shows a downward trend as the battery ages and is more reliable for studies on these cells than the open circuit voltage traditionally used to track phenomena in such cells. In conclusion, typical lithium-ion cells can be classified at begin-of-life using the equilibrium voltage and useful predictions made with respect to end-of-life. Energy storage systems (ESS) play a crucial role in various applications, including electric vehicles, renewable energy integration, and grid stabilization. Assessing the state-of-health (SOH) and state-of-charge (SOC) of these systems is paramount for ensuring their reliable performance and longevity. This article presents a comprehensive review of recent advances in methods for SOH and SOC evaluation in ESS. Firstly, the article discusses traditional techniques such as coulomb counting, voltage-based estimation, and impedance spectroscopy. A novel polymer blend gel electrolyte was made based on two crystallizable polymers of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and nylon-11 in dielectric aprotic organic solvent of propylene carbonate (PC) and its mixture with ethylene carbonate (EC) with and without two different salt lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) and lithium bis-oxoborate (LiBOB). The melting point of nylon-11 comes down in the blend with PVDF in the presence of Li-salt. The unsalted samples show lower gel melting and gelation temperatures of PVDF with an increase in nylon-11 content in EC:PC 2:1 solvent mixture. The storage modulus increased with nylon-11 content and was responsible for more entanglement density through the formation of dense gel network structures. The conductivity falls rapidly at below room temperature because EC solidifies at 40 °C, which enhances the viscosity and motion of lithium ions. The conductivity is higher at room temperature for the EC:PC: 2:1 dielectric solvent mixture. The conductivity is lower in the blend gel, as the nylon-11 solution crystals hinder the motion of ions. Morphological investigation reveals that PVDF unsalted gel is spheroidal, whereas it is fibrillar, intertwined ball shape, and elastic in nature for salted gels. Fibrils become thicker and denser in the presence of nylon-11 and lithium salt. Overall, blended gel electrolytes have a thermal transition of melting/gelation temperature that does not affect conductivity, but storage modulus is much enhanced through inter-networking gelation structural integrity. Baterai lithium-ion merupakan salah satu jenis baterai yang banyak digunakan pada kendaraan listrik maupun perangkat elektronik dimasa kini, karena memiliki performa yang baik dengan densitas energi lebih tinggi dan umur pakai panjang. Penelitian ini menggunakan baterai dengan jenis lithium-ion tipe INR 18650 3.7volt 2500mAh dengan bahan lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (LiNiCoAlO2). Jumlah baterai adalah 15 sel, dengan total kapasitas yang terpasang pada BMS sebesar 11.1 volt 12500 mAh. Lama waktu pengisian baterai dari kondisi low voltage (8.8v) sampai kondis high voltage (12.8v) memakan waktu selama 7 jam, dengan tegangan input 12v. Sistem cut off low voltage dan high voltage berhasil dilakukan BMS, dengan sistem proteksi yang memutus aliran pengisian ketika baterai sudah mencapai kondisi high yaitu 4.2v, dan memutus aliran pengurasan ketika baterai berada pada kondisi low yaitu 2.8v. Sistem balancing BMS berhasil melakukan penyeimbangan tegangan pada semua sel baterai ketika dilakukan pengisian, hal tersebut dibuktikan dengan pengukuran menggunakan multimeter kepada 15 sel baterai dalam kondisi penuh yaitu mengasilkan pembacaan tegangan sebesar 4.2v.

Accurate assessment of metrics such as state of health (SOH) is of paramount importance in effective battery management systems (BMS), given the propensity of batteries to experience capacity degradation with aging. This research endeavors to significantly enhance the precision of battery capacity estimation by effectively mitigating the inherent uncertainties associated with state of charge (SOC) estimation and measurement. To address this challenge, we introduce an innovative approach leveraging the bald eagle search algorithm (BES), a method inspired by the systematic hunting behavior of bald eagles. BES strategically navigates the search space, identifying and selecting promising solutions through fitness evaluations. Our principal aim, utilizing the inherent capabilities of BES, is to pinpoint the optimal candidate that minimizes a designated cost function, while ensuring real-time cell capacity updates facilitated by the incorporation of a memory forgetting factor. The distinctiveness of this study is twofold: firstly, the strategic integration of the BES algorithm within the context of battery capacity optimization, and secondly, the inclusion of a memory forgetting factor to enhance real-time capacity estimations. The efficacy of our approach is rigorously substantiated through validation using NASA’s Prognostic Data, along with three battery scenarios for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. BES consistently outperformed four aggressive algorithms, demonstrating heightened accuracy with a peak error rate of only 1.06% in the most demanding scenario. Furthermore, the predictive performance measures remained consistently below 0.41%, underscoring the robustness of our proposed methodology.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are employed in a range of devices due to their high energy and power density. However, the increased power density of LIBs raises concerns regarding their safety when subjected to external abuse. The thermal behavior is influenced by a number of factors, i.e., the state of charge (SoC), the cell chemistry and the abuse conditions. In this study, three distinct cylindrical Li-ion cells, i.e., lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA), lithium titanate oxide (LTO), and lithium iron phosphate (LFP), were subjected to thermal abuse (heating rate of 5 °C/min) in an air flow reactor, with 100% SoC. Venting and thermal runaway (TR) were recorded in terms of temperature and pressure, while the emitted products (gas, solid, and liquid) were subjected to analysis by FT-IR and ICP-OES. The concentrations of the toxic gases (HF, CO) are significantly in excess of the Immediate Danger to Life or Health Limit (IDLH). Furthermore, it is observed that the solid particles are the result of electrode degradation (metallic nature), whereas the liquid aerosol is derived from the electrolyte solvent. It is therefore evident that in the event of a LIB fire, in order to enhance the safety of the emergency responders, it is necessary to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to minimize exposure to toxic substances, i.e., particles and aerosol.

Thus, there is a desire to innovate technologies that utilize abundant, affordable, and renewable carbonaceous materials for the sustainable production of graphite anodes under relatively mild process conditions. Due to the repeated cycles of charging and discharging, battery manufacturers cannot ensure perfect cell balance. Cell balancing is considered essential for equalizing each battery cell to the same state of charge level in a series configuration. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries can be damaged or have their lifespan decreased by improper discharge processes. This study investigates battery balance during discharge by analyzing the state of charge (SoC) and current distribution of a 3-cell battery pack based on a multi-transformer shared flyback converter (F-C) under varying load conditions. A balanced approach is employed to control individual cells using a dedicated switch for each cell during the discharge process. The results indicate that the proposed active balancing method can enhance the Li-ion pack's balancing capacity while reducing the disparity in residual energy among the battery cells. The unique contribution of this research lies in the active balancing approach, which offers efficient and effective battery management during discharge. This approach provides crucial insights for the future development of improved battery systems. In the last few years, the energy industry has seen an exponential increase in the quantity of lithium‐ion (LI) utility‐scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). Standards, codes, and test methods have been developed that address battery safety and are constantly improving as the industry gains more knowledge about BESS. These standards address the minimum requirements for shipping, installation, commissioning, and operation of the battery. In addition to minimum standards, there are recommended practices that enhance the safety of utility‐scale energy storage installations. This paper reviews the recommended practices that, through knowledge and experience with BESS, are being adopted by electric utilities. The focus is on fire, explosion, and toxic emission hazards of thermal runaway events of the battery and their mitigation. The paper also addresses utility considerations of minimum requirements dictated by codes, standards, and expectations of authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and insurance companies. In this research, Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries were tested at four different charge rates (DCR): 0.2C, 0.5C, 1C, and 1.5C, and four different discharge rates (DDR): 0.5C, 0.9C, 1.3C, 1.6C. This paper proposes a capacity fade model for charging and discharging at accelerated current-rate (C-rate), to interpret the vulnerabilities of Li-ion batteries in energy storage system, because Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are prone to ageing at the fluctuation of the loads in micro-grids. The characteristics of Li-ion batteries both at accelerated DCR and DDR are thoroughly investigated. It is discovered that charging and discharging Li-ion batteries outside of the standard C-rate accelerates their ageing. In addition, the degree of capacity fade is assessed at an accelerated C-rate to develop an ideal charge and discharge model for the micro-grids. Furthermore, the battery capacity fade model is then investigated with deep learning algorithm-based feed-forward neural network (FNN), and recurrent neural network with long-short term memory layer (RNN-LSTM). A comparison of the developed capacity fade models is performed, and it is discovered that the LSTM-RNN battery ageing model outperforms the conventional FNN network at accelerated C-rate. In this study, the benefits and challenges of existing energy storage systems are presented. The environmental threats and the apparent unreliability of fossil fuel energy sources necessitate the need for alternative sources of electrical power. Energy storage has been sourced from mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical, and electrochemical systems. Perhaps, an electrochemical energy storage system, is a better option toward achieving a net zero carbon‐dioxide emission by 2050. Energy storage sources, such as: batteries and supercapacitors, can be reliably fabricated from the hybrid of polymers and two‐dimensional materials for electric vehicles, aviation, and grid load balancing applications. The performances of lithium‐ion batteries are yet to meet the requirements for high‐duty machines and devices. Graphite, the anode of lithium‐ion batteries, suffers from low capacity and high volume‐expansion, resulting in cracking and fracture of the electrodes. Herein, based on evidence from literature, this study suggests substituting graphite with polymer nanocomposite or metal‐oxide nanocomposites such as: conducting polymers, copper oxide, and graphene. This approach, giving attention to these materials' excellent electrochemical, thermal, electrical, mechanical, and redox properties, offers possible ways to overcome the limited limitations confronting lithium‐ion battery technology. Lithium-ion cells (LIC) are emerging as the critical energy source in space applications for spacecraft. The analysis of the failure of small satellites reveals that 41.3% have either suffered partial or total failures in the space environment around Earth, resulting in the accumulation of debris. The defects in batteries caused more failures than thrusters. The present paper details a framework for ensuring the durability of LIC systems in space applications. It is discussed in three verticals viz. a) Durability through Design' that gives prominence to best practices in cell chemistry selection, processing and, design through parametric modelling; b) 'Durability through quality control and testing by the manufacturer and by identifying relevant reliability models; c)'On-orbit management' through the State of Health (SOH) assessment by Random Forest algorithm and a well-equipped intelligent Battery Management System (BMS). Lacuna in standards for cell development process is brought out. Importance of quantitative approach for design, reliability and asset management during space application is highlighted. Use of agile, contemporary techniques of artificial intelligence in this quantitative approach is also discussed. Microgrids are small-scale power networks that include renewable energy sources, load, energy storage systems, and energy management systems (EMS). Lithium-ion batteries are the most used battery for energy storage in microgrids due to their advantages over other types of batteries. However, to protect the battery from the explosion and to manage to charge and discharge based on state-of-charge (SoC) value, this type of battery requires the use of an energy management system. The main objective of this paper is to propose an intelligent control strategy for energy management in the microgrid to control the charge and discharge of Li-ion batteries to stabilize the system and reduce the cost of electricity due to the high cost of grid electricity. The proposed technique is based on a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for voltage control. The FLC is based on the measured voltage of the direct current (DC) bus and the fixed reference voltage to generate buck/boost converter signal control. The proposed technique has been simulated and tested using MATLAB/Simulink software which illustrates the tracking of desired power and DC bus voltage regulation. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are becoming an increasingly integral part of modern society, through consumer electronics, stabilisation of the electric grid, and electric vehicles. However, Lithium-ion batteries degrade in effectiveness over time; a degradation which is extremely dependent on the usage of the battery. Therefore, to study how a battery cell degrades under dynamic conditions, a realistic load profile was constructed based on the operation of forklifts. This profile was used to age three Lithium-ion battery cells at 45, 40, and 35°C and the response of the cells was measured on a second-by-second basis. Periodically the ageing was halted to perform a reference test of the cells allowing for the tracking of their degradation.
