Ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) are promising structures for assembling future nano-electronic circuit elements on a larger scale since reporting domain wall currents of up to 1 mA per single DW. One key requirement hereto is their reproducible manufacturing by gaining preparative control over domain size and domain wall conductivity (DWC). To date, most works on DWC have focused on exploring the fundamental electrical properties of individual DWs within single-shot experiments, with an emphasis on quantifying the origins of DWC. Very few reports exist when it comes to comparing the DWC properties between two separate DWs, and literally nothing exists where issues of reproducibility in DWC devices have been addressed. To fill this gap while facing the challenge of finding guidelines for achieving predictable DWC performance, we report on a procedure that allows us to reproducibly prepare single hexagonal domains of a predefined diameter into uniaxial ferroelectric lithium niobate single crystals of 200 and 300 μ m thickness, respectively. We show that the domain diameter can be controlled with an uncertainty of a few percent. As-grown DWs are then subjected to a standard procedure of current-limited high-voltage DWC enhancement, and they repetitively reach a DWC increase of six orders of magnitude. While all resulting DWs show significantly enhanced DWC values, their individual current–voltage (I–V) characteristics exhibit different shapes, which can be explained by variations in their 3D real structure reflecting local heterogeneities by defects, DW pinning, and surface-near DW inclination. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is one of the most widespread methods for investigating and visualizing ferroelectric domain structures down to the nanometer length scale. PFM makes use of the direct coupling of the piezoelectric response to the crystal lattice, and hence, it is most often applied to spatially map the three-dimensional (3D) near-surface domain distribution of any polar or ferroic sample. Nonetheless, since most samples investigated by PFM are at least semiconducting or fully insulating, the electric ac field emerging from the conductive scanning force microscopy (SFM) tip penetrates the sample and, hence, may also couple to polar features that are deeply buried into the bulk of the sample under investigation. Thus, in the work presented here, we experimentally and theoretically explore the contrast and depth resolution capabilities of PFM, by analyzing the dependence of several key parameters. These key parameters include the depth of the buried feature, i.e., here a domain wall (DW), as well as PFM-relevant technical parameters such as the tip radius, the PFM drive voltage and frequency, and the signal-to-noise ratio. The theoretical predictions are experimentally verified using x-cut periodically poled lithium niobate single crystals that are specially prepared into wedge-shaped samples, in order to allow the buried feature, here the DW, to be "positioned" at any depth into the bulk. This inspection essentially contributes to the fundamental understanding in PFM contrast analysis and to the reconstruction of 3D domain structures down to a 1 μ m-penetration depth into the sample. Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) is capable of detecting strains in piezoelectric materials down to the picometer range. Driven by diverse application areas, numerous weaker electromechanical materials have emerged. The smaller signals associated with them have uncovered ubiquitous crosstalk challenges that limit the accuracy of measurements and that can even mask them entirely. Previously, using an interferometric displacement sensor (IDS), we demonstrated the existence of a special spot position immediately above the tip of the cantilever, where the signal due to body-electrostatic (BES) forces is nullified. Placing the IDS detection spot at this location allows sensitive and BES artifact-free electromechanical measurements. We denote this position as x I D S / L = 1 , where x I D S is the spot position along the cantilever and L is the distance between the base and tip. Recently, a similar approach has been proposed for BES nullification for the more commonly used optical beam deflection (OBD) technique, with a different null position at x O B D / L ≈ 0.6 . In the present study, a large number of automated, sub-resonance spot position dependent measurements were conducted on periodically poled lithium niobate. In this work, both IDS and OBD responses were measured simultaneously, allowing direct comparisons of the two approaches. In these extensive measurements, for the IDS, we routinely observed x I D S / L ≈ 1 . In contrast, the OBD null position ranged over a significant fraction of the cantilever length. Worryingly, the magnitudes of the amplitudes measured at the respective null positions were typically different, often by as much as 100%. Theoretically, we explain these results by invoking the presence of both BES and in-plane forces electromechanical forces acting on the tip using an Euler–Bernoulli cantilever beam model. Notably, the IDS measurements support the electromechanical response of lithium niobate predicted with a rigorous electro-elastic model of a sharp PFM tip in the strong indentation contact limit [ d e f f ≈ 12 pm / V , Kalinin et al., Phys. Lithium niobate ( LiNbO 3 , LN) on insulator (LNOI) has emerged as a promising platform for integrated photonics, due to the strong optical confinement and excellent nonlinear optical and electrical characteristics of LN crystal. Focused ion beam (FIB) as a versatile technique has become a typical way to fabricate LNOI microstructures. However, due to the bombardment of Ga + ions during fabrication, the LN lattice is damaged, which would deteriorate the performance of LNOI devices. Thus, the recognition of the damage formed by FIB fabrication is necessary for the control and optimization of the properties of LN microstructures. However, previous studies on this issue have not delved into it from a lattice perspective. Here, we conducted an investigation into the damage inflicted on LN film due to FIB fabrication and the subsequent impact of buffered oxide etching (BOE) treatment on this damage using Raman spectroscopy. Our findings indicate that the interaction between Ga + ions and LN film results in lattice amorphization, as well as a reduction in the ionic bonding and lattice stress within LN. Furthermore, absorption spectra were acquired both before and after BOE treatment, revealing the emergence of additional optical losses attributed to Ga + ions. Notably, these defects responsible for optical losses are predominantly concentrated near the surface of the milled LN film, and BOE treatment proves efficient in their removal. This study contributes to further understanding of the defect structure in LN film after FIB fabrication, as well as repairing the damage and, thus, improving the performance of LN microstructures. Owing to magnetoelastic coupling, surface acoustic waves (SAWs) may be scattered resonantly by magnetic elements, such as nickel stripes. The scattering may be further enhanced via the Borrmann effect when the elements are organized into an array that matches the acoustic wavelength. We use finite-element modeling to consider single- and double-layer stripes patterned on top of a lithium niobate surface that carries Love surface waves. We do observe enhancement in the coupling for single-layer stripes, but only for Gilbert damping below its realistic value. For double-layered stripes, a weak yet clear and distinct signature of Bragg reflection is identified far away from the acoustic band edge, even for a realistic damping value. Double-layered stripes also offer better magnetic tunability when their magnetic period is different from the periodicity of elastic properties of the structure because of staggered magnetization patterns. The results pave the way for the design of magnetoacoustic metamaterials with an enhanced coupling between propagating SAWs and local magnetic resonances and for the development of reconfigurable SAW-based circuitry. Brillouin light scattering is a versatile measurement technique of the dispersion of bulk acoustic phonons in amorphous and crystalline solids. It allows contactless and non-destructive characterization of the relevant material tensors of optically transparent materials, provided that the optical refraction indices, and in addition the dielectric tensor for piezoelectric materials, are known beforehand. The complete estimation of the anisotropic material tensors is often performed using many different crystal orientations, and hence different samples of the same crystal. In this paper, we consider the problem of measuring those tensors using a single sample of an anisotropic single crystal with trigonal symmetry. A complete measurement requires sufficient experimental diversity in the phonon wavevectors when sampling the phonon velocity surfaces, hence the consideration of a large number of directions away from crystallographic axes. We estimate all six independent elastic constants of non-piezoelectric sapphire ( 3 ¯ m point group) with a single X-cut wafer and the six independent elastic constants together with the four independent piezoelectric constants of piezoelectric lithium niobate (3 m point group) with a single Y-cut wafer. The field of photonic integrated circuits has witnessed significant progress in recent years, with a growing demand for devices that offer high-performance reconfigurability. Due to the inability of conventional tunable directional couplers (TDCs) to maintain a fixed phase while tuning the reflectivity, Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) are employed as the primary building blocks for reflectivity tuning in constructing large-scale circuits. However, MZIs are prone to fabrication errors due to the need for perfect balanced directional couplers to achieve 0-1 reflectivity, which hinders their scalability. In this study, we introduce a design of a TDC based on coupling constant tuning in the thin film Lithium Niobate platform and present an optimized design. Our optimized TDC design enables arbitrary reflectivity tuning while ensuring a consistent phase across a wide range of operating wavelengths. Furthermore, it exhibits fewer bending sections than MZIs and is inherently resilient to fabrication errors in waveguide geometry and coupling length compared to both MZIs and conventional TDCs. High‐speed electro‐optic modulators are key components in modern communication networks and various applications that require chip‐scale modulation with large bandwidth, high modulation efficiency, and compact footprint. However, fundamental trade‐offs make it challenging to achieve these metrics simultaneously, and thus new methodologies must be explored. To this end, a Mach–Zehnder modulator harnessing slow‐light waveguides and capacitively loaded slow‐wave electrodes are presented on silicon‐nitride‐loaded lithium niobate on an insulator platform. The increased group index and reduced microwave loss significantly improve the modulation efficiency. With the 1‐mm‐length modulation section, a low half‐wave voltage length product Vπ·L of 0.21 V cm is obtained, which is one order of magnitude smaller than that of conventional thin film lithium niobate Mach–Zehnder modulators, and a modulation bandwidth of surpassing 110 GHz is achieved. The digital signal processor‐free non‐return‐to‐zero signal and eight‐level pulse amplitude modulation signal of up to 180 and 300 Gbps, respectively, are generated by the modulator, which provides ultra‐large bandwidth, ultra‐high efficiency, and a compact solution for next‐generation electro‐optic systems. Lithium niobate and lithium tantalate are among the most widespread materials for nonlinear, integrated photonics. Mixed crystals with arbitrary Nb–Ta ratios provide an additional degree of freedom to not only tune materials properties, such as the birefringence but also leverage the advantages of the singular compounds, for example, by combining the thermal stability of lithium tantalate with the larger nonlinear or piezoelectric constants of lithium niobate. Periodic poling allows to achieve phase-matching independent of waveguide geometry and is, therefore, one of the commonly used methods in integrated nonlinear optics. For mixed crystals, periodic poling has been challenging so far due to the lack of homogeneous, mono-domain crystals, which severely inhibit domain growth and nucleation. In this work, we investigate surface-near (< 1 μ m depth) domain inversion on x-cut lithium niobate tantalate mixed crystals via electric field poling and lithographically structured electrodes. We find that naturally occurring head-to-head or tail-to-tail domain walls in the as-grown crystal inhibit domain inversion at a larger scale. However, periodic poling is possible if the gap size between the poling electrodes is of the same order of magnitude or smaller than the average size of naturally occurring domains. Photonic neural networks (PNNs) have emerged as a promising platform to address the energy consumption issue that comes with the advancement of artificial intelligence technology, and thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) offers an attractive solution as a material platform mainly for its combined characteristics of low optical loss and large electro‐optic (EO) coefficients. Here, the first implementation of an EO tunable Mach‐Zehnder interferometer (MZI) mesh‐based TFLN PNN is presented. The device features ultra‐high fidelity, high computation speed, and exceptional power efficiency. The performance of the device is benchmarked with several deep learning missions including in situ training of Circle and Moons nonlinear datasets classification, Iris flower species recognition, and handwriting digits recognition. The capability to identify the frequency of unknown microwave signals with an ultra‐wide measurement bandwidth is highly desirable in radar astronomy, satellite communication, and 6G networks. Compared to electronic solutions, the integrated photonic technology‐enabled dynamic instantaneous frequency measurement (DIFM) approach is attractive as it offers unique advantages, such as ultra‐wide frequency measurement bandwidth, high flexibility, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, so far the bandwidth of the reported DIFM systems based on integrated photonic technology is limited to below 30 GHz due to the finite bandwidth of electro‐optical modulators (EOMs), limiting their applications, particularly in the field of millimeter wave technology (30–300 GHz). Here, the first integrated dynamic microwave instantaneous frequency measurement system with a record‐breaking operation bandwidth (ranging from 5 to 65 GHz) and low root‐mean‐square (RMS) error (≈300 MHz) is presented on the lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) integrated photonic platform. Frequency‐modulated continuous‐wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has a huge potential for developing the next generation of LiDAR applied in autonomous driving, industrial automation, environmental monitoring, and so on. An ideal laser for the FMCW LiDAR system should simultaneously feature fast chirp repetition frequency, a large chirp bandwidth, high linearity, a compact footprint, and low‐cost. In this study, such a laser based on thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonics is proposed and demonstrated. The laser can achieve a chirp bandwidth of 3.44 GHz, a tuning efficiency of 574 MHz V−1, and a chirp rate of 3.44 × 107 GHz s−1, which are the best values compared with other TFLN‐based lasers. A FMCW LiDAR system built by their laser is also experimentally demonstrated, showing that it can achieve a ranging precision of 4.9 mm, a velocity precision of 0.054 m s−1, and a sampling rate of 5 MSa s−1. The field of integrated photonics has significantly impacted numerous fields including communication, sensing, and quantum physics owing to the efficiency, speed, and compactness of its devices. However, the reliance on off‐chip bulk lasers compromises the compact nature of these systems. While silicon photonics and III‐V platforms have established integrated laser technologies, emerging demands for ultra‐low optical loss, wider bandgaps, and optical nonlinearities necessitate other platforms. Developing integrated lasers on less mature platforms is arduous and costly due to limited throughput or unconventional process requirements. In response, a novel platform‐agnostic laser integration technique is proposed, utilizing a singular design and process flow, applicable without modification to a diverse range of platforms. Leveraging a two‐step micro‐transfer printing method, nearly identical laser performance is achieved across platforms with refractive indices between 1.7 and 2.5. Experimental validation demonstrates strikingly similar laser characteristics between devices processed on lithium niobate and silicon nitride platforms. Furthermore, the integration of a laser with a resonant electro‐optic comb generator on the thin‐film lithium niobate platform is showcased, producing over 80 comb lines spanning 12 nm. This versatile technique transcends platform‐specific limitations, facilitating applications like microwave photonics, handheld spectrometers, and cost‐effective Lidar systems, across multiple platforms. Highly efficient and programmable writing of multidimensional optical data is of great value for next‐generation high‐throughput information technologies but has been rarely achieved. Here, a one‐step frame printing of chromatic pixels in lithium niobate crystal by using a single ultrafast laser pulse is reported. In this strategy, a phase superposition‐based spatial light modulation strategy is applied to split a single ultrafast laser pulse into multiple son pulses with designated optical properties and spatial distribution patterns. It is demonstrated that these son pulses allow for massively creating micro‐amorphous phase transition zones with on‐demand structural features that can modulate the intrinsic birefringence of the crystal matrix and generate wavelength‐selective interference in the visible band to form pixel‐level chromatic patterns, namely, single‐pulse‐driven frame color printing. The created chromatic pixels can be encoded into computer‐recognizable data arrays to play a role in high‐efficiency multidimensional information recording. Non-destructive methodologies using activation analysis and ion beam analysis techniques were optimized for the chemical characterization of ceramic materials, lithium titanate and lithium niobate, which have application in tritium breeding blanket. The analyses were carried out as a part of chemical quality control exercise. The atomic ratios of Li/Ti, Li/Nb were quantified by charged particle activation analysis using 13 MeV proton beam from variable energy cyclotron facility and particle induced gamma ray emission/Rutherford backscattering spectrometry using 3 MeV/2 MeV proton beam from 3MV tandem accelerator facility. The results of these different analytical methods are in good agreement, which established the applicability of these activation analysis and ion beam techniques for the chemical characterization of these ceramic materials. Thin-film lithium niobate is an attractive material for RF acoustic devices because of its high electromechanical coupling. However, due to the large coupling and the high anisotropy, thin-film lithium niobate resonators are prone to accidental resonances called spurious modes. These modes compromise the frequency response of the resonators, limiting their use in filter and oscillator applications. In this work, we present a novel method of spurious mode suppression through a special edge treatment etch process. Two thin-film lithium niobate resonators were fabricated, one with smooth sidewalls and one with the edge treatment. It was found that the edge-treated resonators show a weaker spurious mode response. This is potentially a new way to mitigate spurious resonances, a major issue in lithium niobate Lamb wave devices. The demand for high-performance electromechanical resonators is ever-growing across diverse applications, ranging from sensing and time-keeping to advanced communication devices. Among the electromechanical materials being explored, thin-film lithium niobate stands out due to its strong piezoelectric properties and low acoustic loss. However, in nearly all existing lithium niobate electromechanical devices, the configuration is such that the electrodes are in direct contact with the mechanical resonator. This configuration introduces an undesirable mass-loading effect, producing spurious modes and additional damping. Here, we present an electromechanical platform that mitigates this challenge by leveraging a flip-chip bonding technique to separate the electrodes from the mechanical resonator. By offloading the electrodes from the resonator, our approach yields a substantial increase in the quality factor of these resonators, paving the way for enhanced performance and reliability for their device applications. The dielectric gap between the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) tip and the surface of a ferroelectric using conductive atomic force microscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is investigated. While the gap functions as a dielectric layer, it also allows tunneling current to inject charges into the ferroelectric when a critical loading force between 10–20 µN is applied to a tip with a radius of 25 nm under a bias voltage of 0.5 V. It is observed that the permittivity of the dielectric gap determines the coercive voltage measured by the piezoresponse hysteresis loop. While such studies done in air often produce coercive voltages much larger than those studied for the same materials in capacitor‐based studies, the use of high permittivity media such as water (ɛr = 79) or silicone oil (ɛr = 2.1‐2.8) produces coercive fields that more closely match those measured in conventional capacitor‐based polarization hysteresis loop measurements. Furthermore, using water as a dielectric medium in PFM imaging enhances the accuracy in extracting the amplitude and phase data from periodically poled lithium niobate crystals. These findings provide insight into the nanoscale phenomena of polarization switching instigated by the SPM tip and provide a pathway to improved quantitative studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astronomical precision spectroscopy underpins searches for life beyond Earth, direct observation of the expanding Universe and constraining the potential variability of physical constants on cosmological scales. Laser frequency combs can provide the required accurate and precise calibration to the astronomical spectrographs. For cosmological studies, extending the calibration with such astrocombs to the ultraviolet spectral range is desirable, however, strong material dispersion and large spectral separation from the established infrared laser oscillators have made this challenging. Here, we demonstrate astronomical spectrograph calibration with an astrocomb in the ultraviolet spectral range below 400 nm. This is accomplished via chip-integrated highly nonlinear photonics in periodically-poled, nano-fabricated lithium niobate waveguides in conjunction with a robust infrared electro-optic comb generator, as well as a chip-integrated microresonator comb. These results demonstrate a viable route towards astronomical precision spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and could contribute to unlock the full potential of next-generation ground-based and future space-based instruments. Photonic metamaterials interact with light at the micro–nano scale, enabling unprecedented optical manipulation capabilities, which play a key role in nonlinear optics, spin optics, negative index, and zero index materials. Recently, thin‐film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) has emerged as a promising platform for integrated photonics due to its unique material properties, including an excellent electro–optic effect, wide transparency window, and low waveguide losses. Metamaterial structures are promising for constructing novel integrated photonic circuit building blocks on LNOI as they can provide advantageous circuit functionality. In this work, as a proof of concept, high‐performance polarization manipulating devices including polarization splitter rotator (PSR), polarization rotator (PR), and polarizer are demonstrated using photonic metamaterials on the etchless LNOI platform by introducing a silicon nitride layer on the top of LNOI wafer as the loading material. In this way, full advantage of lithium niobate (LN) can be taken to achieve various high‐performance integrated photonic devices, while avoiding the etching of LN and simplifying the fabrication process greatly, which can bring bright prospects for achieving large‐scale lithium niobate integrated photonic circuits. Microplastics have emerged as ubiquitous contaminants, attracting increasing global attention. Recent evidence confirms the presence of microplastics in human blood, suggesting their potential to interact with cells and induce adverse physiological reactions in various organs as blood circulates. To quantify the distribution of microplastics and assess their potential effects on human health, the effective separation of microplastics from blood is crucial. However, current methods for separating microplastics from blood are limited in effectiveness and simplicity. This study proposes a microfluidic device that utilizes traveling surface acoustic waves to separate microplastics from blood. While traveling surface acoustic waves have been employed to separate various particles, a systematic study on the separation of microplastics from blood samples has not been previously reported. Specifically, the theoretical values of the acoustic radiation factor for various types of microplastics and blood cells were investigated. The significant differences in resonant frequencies indicated the feasibility of separating microplastics of different sizes and types from blood cells. Experimental validation was performed using a polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic device on a piezoelectric lithium niobate substrate. The device successfully separated 5- and 10-micrometer polystyrene microplastics from blood samples. The effects of power and flow rate on separation efficiency were also systematically investigated. This study provides a novel approach for the effective separation of microplastics from blood, contributing to the assessment of their distribution and potential health impacts. X-ray excited radioluminescence was demonstrated in Pr-doped lithium niobate polycrystalline samples with varying lithium-to-niobium ratios (R LN). The samples' phase structures, excitation and emission spectra, and radioluminescence were experimentally analyzed to investigate the tuning effects of R LN. Theoretical calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) were conducted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, and thermoluminescence curves were measured to verify the predictions of the theoretical analysis. We suggest that both photoluminescence and radioluminescence properties can be effectively tailored by adjusting the crystal structure, as well as the depth and density of electron traps within the LiNbO 3 :Pr matrix through R LN modulation. We report a novel widely tunable Ka-band optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) realized by integrating a Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM), a thermally-tunable add-drop micro-ring resonator (MRR), and a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) on the thin film lithium niobate platform, with the MZM and the MRR sequentially situated in one of the MZI arms. The MZM is for modulating the optical carrier, while the add-drop MRR is for selecting a single modulation sideband to beat with the unmodulated optical carrier from the other arm of the MZI, such that the OEO oscillation frequency is determined by the frequency spacing between the optical carrier and the selected modulation sideband, while the frequency tuning range is determined by the free spectral range of the MRR. By tuning the resonances of the add-drop MRR, the oscillation frequency can be tuned from 20 to 35 GHz, with the phase noises of −85 dBc/Hz @10 kHz and −116 dBc/Hz @100 kHz in the whole tuning range, which represent much higher oscillation frequency, much wider frequency tuning range, and lower phase noise than those of the photonic integrated OEOs realized with other material platforms reported previously. Although existing on-chip spectrometers have achieved breakthroughs in key performance metrics, such as, a high resolution and a large bandwidth, their scanning speed and energy consumption still hinder practical applications of such devices. Here, a stationary Fourier transform spectrometer is introduced based on a Mach–Zehnder interferometer structure on thin-film lithium niobate. Long and low-loss spiral waveguides with electro-optic tuning are adopted as the optical path scanning elements with a half-wave voltage of 0.14 V. A high resolution of 2.1 nm and a spectral recovery with a bandwidth of 100 nm is demonstrated under a high-speed and high-voltage scanning in the range of −100 V to +100 V at up to 100 KHz. Holmium-doped congruent-composition lithium niobate (LiNbO3:Ho, LN:Ho) crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. The absorption of the LN:1at% Ho3+ crystal was recorded at room temperature. On the basis of the analysis of emission and absorption spectra of the LN:1at% Ho3+ crystal, the possibilities of obtaining, at room temperature, radiation-balanced (RB) lasing in the region of 640–670 nm wavelengths corresponding to the inter-Stark transitions of manifolds 5F5 and 5I8 was theoretically investigated. The RB lasing parameters were calculated and the optimal pump and laser wavelengths were determined: λ O P = 652.1   n m , λ O L = 653.6   n m . The values for the RB lasing efficiency and radiation amplification in the considered wavelength region were obtained: F e f f = 3.23 × 10 − 22 c m 2 ,   F g a i n = 6.08 × 10 − 22   c m 2 . Frequency conversion process based on periodically poled thin-film lithium niobate (PPTFLN) has been widely recognized as an important component for quantum information and photonic signal processing. Benefiting from the tight confinement of optical modes, the normalized conversion efficiency (NCE) of nanophotonic waveguides is improved by orders of magnitude compared to their bulk counterparts. However, the power conversion efficiency of these devices is limited by inherent nanoscale inhomogeneity of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), leading to undesirable phase errors. In this paper, we theoretically present a novel approach to solve this problem. Based on dispersion engineering, we aim at adjusting the waveguide structure, making local waveguide width adjustment at positions of different thicknesses, thus eliminating the phase errors. The adapted waveguide width design is applied for etched and loaded waveguides based on PPTFLN, achieving the ultrahigh power conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation (SHG) up to 2.1 × 104%W−1 and 6936%W−1, respectively, which surpasses the power conversion efficiency of other related works. Our approach just needs standard periodic poling with a single period, significantly reducing the complexity of electrode fabrication and the difficulty of poling, and allows for the placing of multiple waveguides, without individual poling designs for each waveguide. With the advantages of simplicity, high production, and meeting current micro–nano fabrication technology, our work may open a new way for achieving highly efficient second-order nonlinear optical processes based on PPTFLN. Mode (de)multiplexers (MDMs) serve as critical foundational elements within systems for facilitating high-capacity communication, relying on mode conversions achieved through directional coupler (DC) structures. However, DC structures are challenged by dispersion issues for broadband mode coupling, particularly for high-order modes. In this work, based on the principles of phase control theory, we have devised an approach to mitigate the dispersion challenges, focusing on a thin-film lithium niobate-on-onsulator (LNOI) platform. This solution involves integrating a customized inverse-dispersion section into the device architecture, offsetting minor phase shifts encountered during the mode coupling process. By employing this approach, we have achieved broadband mode conversion from T E 0 to T E 1 and T E 0 to T E 2 within a 300 nm wavelength range, and the maximum deviations were maintained below −0.68 dB and −0.78 dB, respectively. Achieving rapid spectroscopic characterization is highly desirable for contactless, real‐time monitoring applications. However, it is challenging due to the trade‐off between short acquisition time and fine resolution. To address this challenge, a fully active scanning Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) using thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonics is proposed. This work theoretically reveals relations between acquisition time and resolution and finds that their trade‐off can be notably alleviated by employing Michelson interferometer architectures. The proposed device consists of two broadband edge couplers and a tunable Michelson interferometer which includes 1.02 m‐length equivalent waveguides. The fabricated waveguides can achieve a wafer‐scale optical propagation loss of 12 ±$\pm$ 2.4 dB m−1${\rm m}^{-1}$, which enables the device to maintain a low insertion loss with a 1.02 m‐length equivalent waveguide. The proposed device can achieve an acquisition time of 10 μs$\umu{\rm s}$, a spectral resolution of 0.74 cm−1${\rm cm}^{-1}$ (i.e., 0.19 nm), and an operation wavelength range from 1260 to 1600 nm. Electro–optic phase modulators (PMs) are critical components for modern communication, sensing, and microwave photonics. A recycling PM has been demonstrated to effectively reduce the half‐wave voltage (Vπ) while exhibiting resonant behavior for the driven microwave signals [Nature 612, 252 (2022)]. However, the significant optical delay of the loop‐back waveguide reduces the low‐Vπ bandwidth to 1.5 GHz. Herein, a novel folded structure is proposed for recycling PM fabricated on a thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform. The low‐Vπ bandwidth can be expanded by significantly reducing the optical loop‐back delay. Additionally, efficient velocity matching can be achieved by aligning the time delay between the microwave and optical signals. The proposed folded recycling PM, with a 0.6 × 12 mm2 footprint, is characterized by the lowest Vπ of 2–3 V in each modulation period across 3.5 to 40 GHz and a doubled low‐Vπ bandwidth of 3 GHz. As an application demonstration, such a folded recycling PM is employed for tunable optical frequency combs (OFCs) generation. Flat OFCs consisting of 15, 21, and 13 comb lines are generated with flexible comb spacings of 29.6, 31.3, and 33 GHz, respectively. Gallium nitride (GaN) has emerged as an ideal material for UV PD fabrication due to its favorable properties. However, the quality of GaN epitaxial layers significantly impacts device performance and reliability. Sapphire-based GaN epitaxial growth technology enables the realization of high-quality GaN epitaxial layers, making it the preferred choice for GaN substrates. Nonetheless, the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between sapphire and GaN can lead to crystal mismatch and stress accumulation at high temperatures, affecting device performance and reliability. In contrast, lithium niobate (LiNbO3) exhibits similar coefficients of thermal expansion to GaN, mitigating crystal mismatch and stress accumulation issues. Here, we report the realization of a GaN UV PD by laminating GaN membrane onto ferroelectric LiNbO3 through selective electrochemical etching of the sapphire-based GaN epitaxial film. The LiNbO3-based GaN PD achieves a specific high on/off ratio of 107. At a 5 V bias voltage, the device exhibits a high peak responsivity of 1.712 × 103 A/W under 325 nm laser illumination. Furthermore, the device demonstrates excellent performance for polarization light detection, with a polarization ratio of approximately 54.95. Exploiting the local ferroelectric polarization of x-cut LiNbO3, the photogenerated electron–hole pairs in GaN are efficiently separated by the electrostatic field from the polarization of ferroelectric LiNbO3, resulting in enhanced light-to-electric conversion efficiency. Lithium niobate exhibits slow refractive index drift after temperature excursions typical in device manufacturing. Such drift can degrade performance in certain devices. We analyze the birefringence changes in a range of temperatures to measure the magnitude and rate of change. Experiments were conducted by first annealing congruently grown, magnesium doped, and lithium-enriched crystals at a temperatures between 95 and 215 ∘ C. Subsequent optical evaluation was performed between 95 and 122 ∘ C using a table-top apparatus. The sample was illuminated with incandescent polarized light and transmitted light was collected with a compact spectrometer after passing through an analyzer so fringes could be recorded. Careful fringe analysis allows a precise estimate of birefringence changes at a reference wavelength with precision < 10 - 6 . The observed birefringence changes can be explained by assuming that existing lithium vacancies re-arrange around positively charged point defects via lithium vacancy migration. Computer simulations for a simple model reproduce the major observations such as magnitude of change, activation energy for relaxation and the stretched exponential nature of the change. Similar effects are expected in lithium tantalate and the results suggest ways to minimize the influence on device operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the design, fabrication, and experimental results of an optical wavelength demultiplexer for a new wireless-optical signal converter for Beyond-5G/6G mobile communication system. This optical wavelength demultiplexer is based on a lithium niobate (LiNbO3) multimode interference (MMI) coupler and is intended to be applied in an advanced electro-optics modulator (EOM) with ability in converting the space division multiplexing (SDM) wireless-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical signals. The designed MMI coupler displays a high splitting ratio over -13 dB in both O and L bands. The results from the experiments align well with the simulation. The utilization of the MMI coupler in EOM enables the direct conversion of SDM wireless signals to WDM optical signals, without any additional power supply. Frequency‐dependent nonlinear process in microresonators is widely acknowledged, but there is no theory available to calculate the conversion efficiency for each resonance of the ring, except for the phase‐matching one. Similarly for azimuth‐dependent nonlinear process in birefringent rings, there is a lack of theory to analysis the conversion efficiency for each azimuth of the ring. Consequently, it leads to old‐fashioned or ill‐considered coupling position and inefficient energy conversion in birefringent microrings. Here, the study introduces spatio‐temporal coupled‐mode equation to describe mode spatial properties in the cavity, compensating for the deficiency of temporal coupled‐mode equation in describing sophisticated responses. By this equation, it is found that over a wide frequency range, the extremely strong second‐harmonic generation of TE modes can be achieved at different azimuth under different pumps in an X‐cut lithium niobate microring, as proved by a 440 000%/W conversion efficiency in a non‐poling ring recently. This theory is important for realizing an efficient entangled quantum light source, for example. Lithium niobate on insulator emerges as a promising platform for integrated microwave photonics because of its capability of ultralow‐loss guidance and high‐efficiency modulation of light. Chip‐level integration of microwave filters is important for signal processing in the 5G/6G wireless communication. Here, by employing bound states in the continuum for low‐loss waveguiding, high‐performance microwave photonic filters are realized on an etchless lithium niobate integrated platform. These microwave photonic filters consist of a high‐quality photonic microcavity modulated by piezoelectrically excited surface acoustic waves. Acoustic time delays from 21 to 106 ns and passbands with bandwidth as narrow as 0.89 MHz are achieved in the fabricated filters operating at gigahertz frequencies. Optical nonlinearities are one of the most fascinating properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. While tremendous efforts have been made to find and optimize the second-order optical nonlinearity in enormous 2D materials, opportunities to explore higher-order ones are elusive because of the much lower efficiency. Here, we report the giant high odd-order optical nonlinearities in centrosymmetric correlated van der Waals insulator manganese phosphorus triselenide. When illuminated by two near-infrared femtosecond lasers, the sample generates a series of profound four-and six-wave mixing outputs. The near-infrared third-order nonlinear susceptibility reaches near the highest record values of 2D materials. Comparative measurements to other prototypical nonlinear optical materials [lithium niobate, gallium(II) selenide, and tungsten disulfide] reveal its extraordinary wave mixing efficiency. The wave mixing processes are further used for nonlinear optical waveguide with multicolor emission. Our work highlights the promising prospect for future research of the nonlinear light-matter interactions in the correlated 2D system and for potential nonlinear photonic applications. The feasibility of achieving efficient coupling between an optical fiber and a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide in an ideal optical system was theoretically analyzed using a finite element simulator. Divergence of single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber and lensed fiber in space was simulated. Direct end-face coupling simulations were conducted for a PPLN ridge waveguide with a cross-sectional size of 10 μm x 10 μm and a length of 20 mm, involving two different types of fibers. It is found that despite the lensed fiber achieving a coupling efficiency of up to 95%, its fundamental mode contribution is less than 5%. Given that PPLN frequency-doubling devices primarily rely on the laser's fundamental mode for operation, this renders the coupling efficiency of the lensed fiber relatively low in practical applications. In contrast, ordinary single-mode fiber exhibits a significantly higher fundamental mode contribution of 93. 8%, demonstrating its superior performance. Therefore, this study selects ordinary single-mode fiber for encapsulation testing with PPLN ridge waveguides. The experimental results show that when the maximum pump power output from the fiber amplifier reaches 1. 6 W, the calculated input pump power, after deducting the coupling losses between the input fiber and the waveguide, stands at 1. 2 W. The fiber-to-waveguide coupling efficiency is 75%, slightly exceeding the currently known advanced value of 72%. At a temperature of 24. 8 °C, with an input power of 1. 2 W at the fundamental wavelength of 1 560 nm, the maximum output of frequency-doubled light is 653 mW. The concept of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has not only advanced fundamental physics research but also yielded a plethora of practical applications, benefitting from the abundant methods for OAM generation based on linear, nonlinear and combined schemes. The combined scheme could generate octave-separating OAM beams, potentially increasing the channels for optical communication and data storage. However, this scheme faces a challenge in achieving high conversion efficiency. In this work, we have demonstrated the generation of multiple OAM beams at both fundamental frequency and second harmonic (SH) wavelengths using a three-dimensional forked grating array with both spatial χ(1) and χ(2) distributions in a lithium niobate nonlinear photonic crystal platform. The enhancements of the fundamental and SH OAM beams have been achieved by employing linear Bragg diffraction and nonlinear Bragg diffraction, respectively, i.e., quasi-phase matching. The experimental results show that OAM beams with variable topological charges can be enhanced at different diffraction orders via wavelength or angle tuning, achieving conversion efficiencies of 60.45 % for the linear OAM beams and 1.08 × 10−4 W−1 for the nonlinear ones. This work provides a promising approach for parallel detection of OAM states in optical communications, and extends beyond OAM towards the control of structured light via cascaded linear and nonlinear processes. Photonic devices based on ferroelectric domain engineering in thin film lithium niobate are key components for both classical and quantum information processing. Periodic poling of ridge waveguide can avoid the selective etching effect of lithium niobate, however, the fabrication of high-quality ferroelectric domain is still a challenge. In this work, we optimized the applied electric field distribution, and rectangular inverted domain structure was obtained in the ridge waveguide which is beneficial for efficient nonlinear frequency conversions. Second harmonic confocal microscope, piezoresponse force microscopy, and chemical selective etching were used to characterize the inverted domain in the ridge waveguide. In addition, the performance of nonlinear frequency conversion of the periodically poled nano-waveguide was investigated through second harmonic generation, and the normalized conversion efficiency was measured to be 1,720 % W−1 cm−2, which is close to 60 % that of the theoretical value. Photonics offers unique capabilities for quantum information processing (QIP) such as room-temperature operation, the scalability of nanophotonics, and access to ultrabroad bandwidths and consequently ultrafast operation. Ultrashort pulse sources of quantum states in nanophotonics are an important building block for achieving scalable ultrafast QIP; however, their demonstrations so far have been sparse. Here, we demonstrate a femtosecond biphoton source in dispersion-engineered periodically poled lithium niobate nanophotonics. We measure 17 THz of bandwidth for the source centered at 2.09 µm, corresponding to a few optical cycles, with a brightness of 8.8 GHz/mW. With the rapid development of optical communication and quantum information, the demand for efficient and broadband nonlinear frequency conversion has increased. At present, most single-frequency conversion processes in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides suffer from lateral leakage without proper design, leading to an additional increase in propagation loss. Achieving broadband frequency conversion also encounters this problem in that there are no relevant works that have solved this yet. In this paper, we theoretically propose an efficient and flat broadband second harmonic generation (SHG) in silicon nitride loaded apodized chirped periodically poled LNOI waveguides. By using a bound states in the continuum (BICs) mechanism to reduce the propagation loss and utilizing the characteristic that the BICs are insensitive to wavelength, an ultra-low-loss wave band of 80 nm is realized. Then, by employing an apodized chirped design, a flat broadband SHG is achieved. The normalized conversion efficiency (NCE) is approximately 222%W−1cm−2, and the bandwidth is about 100 nm. Moreover, the presented waveguides are simple and can be fabricated without direct etching of lithium niobate, exhibiting excellent fabrication tolerance. Effective manipulation and control of fluids in microfluidic channels requires robust bonding between the different components. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely employed in microchannel fabrication due to its affordability, biocompatibility, and straightforward fabrication process. However, PDMS's low surface energy poses challenges in bonding with many organic and inorganic substrates, hindering the development of hybrid microfluidic devices. In this study, a simple and versatile three step process is presented for bonding PDMS microchannels with organic (cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)) and inorganic substrates (lithium niobate (LiNbO3)) using plasma activation and a silane coupling agent. Initially, the PDMS surface undergoes oxygen/argon plasma activation, followed by functionalization with (3‐aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). Subsequently, the COC or LiNbO3 is plasma activated and brought into contact with PDMS under a load at a specific temperature. Characterization by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements confirmed the successful treatment of the substrates. In addition, bonding strength of the fabricated hybrid devices was assessed through leakage and tensile tests. Under optimized conditions (100°C and 4% v/v APTES), PDMS‐COC hybrid microchannels achieved a flow rate of 600 mL/h without leakage and a tensile strength of 562 kPa. Conversely, the PDMS‐ LiNbO3 assembly demonstrated a flow rate of 216 mL/h before leakage, with a tensile strength of 334 kPa. This bonding method exhibits significant potential and versatility for various materials in microfluidic applications, ranging from biomedical research to enhanced oil recovery. The key components of a polarization-independent electro-optic (EO) interferometer, including the beam splitter, mode converter, and directional coupler, are designed based on a lithium niobate (LN) platform on an integrated insulator to ensure high extinction ratios. By elaborately designing the geometric structure of the multimode interference (MMI) coupler, beam splitting of equal proportions and directional coupling of higher-order modes are realized. The most prominent characteristic of the proposed interferometer is polarization insensitivity, which is realized by converting TM polarization into TE polarization using a mode converter, providing conditions for the study of light with different polarizations. At 1550 nm, the visibility of the interferometer is 97.59% and 98.16% for TE and TM, respectively, demonstrating the high performance of the proposed LN polarization-independent interferometer. The study explores the phenomenon of the pyroelectric effect and demonstrates its influence on the emergence of an additional phase shift of the passing light wave in waveguide structures of photonic integrated circuits formed on a lithium niobate crystal X-cut substrate. Measurements were carried out using interferometric methods in a Mach-Zehnder fiber-optic interferometer configuration with radiation modulation in the reference arm allowing for continuous phase measurement in the arm with the sample under study. The calculation of the temporal parameters of each element of the experimental setup was performed to determine the relaxation times of pyroelectric charges. An analysis of the contribution of pyroelectric phase drift, its magnitude, and the temporal characteristics of charge relaxation causing the drift was conducted. A model was proposed and the design of a phase modulator based on a lithium niobate crystal with additional back Z-oriented plates located on the modulator electrodes was investigated. The proposed solution method is capable of compensating for the pyroelectric field and, as a result, reducing parasitic phase shift.

The advent of the new 5G communication standard has introduced demanding requirements for the performance of RF front-end filters, necessitating high frequency, large bandwidth, and other improved parameters. Consequently, researchers have been actively investigating the potential of surface acoustic wave resonators and film bulk acoustic resonators to address these needs, leading to the development of numerous novel structures. Through finite element simulation, a new heterogeneous stack structure Al/LN/diamond/Si with an interdigitated electrode resonant cavity is proposed. And the advantageous role of a diamond thin film in the surface acoustic wave resonant structure, including the excitation of high-frequency acoustic resonance modes and modulation of the electromechanical coupling coefficient has been studied. This structure holds promise for addressing the increasing demands for high-frequency, large-bandwidth RF front-end filters in the context of the new 5G communication standard. The results show that the central resonant frequency of the new structure resonator is 5284 MHz, the electromechanical coupling coefficient is 10.96%, and the Q factor value is 10 316, which has potential application value in the field of high-frequency filtering. The application of rare earth (RE) doped crystals in quantum information processing has attracted more and more attention in the past decade. How to change the clock transitions of RE ion in crystal and control their lifetime of maintaining coherent quantum state is a valuable question. In this work, the trigonal 171Yb3+ centers in lithium niobate (LN) crystal are investigated theoretically to obtain their accurate ground and excited hyperfine sublevels under external magnetic field B by a combined method of density functional theory-based geometric optimization and parametric effective Hamiltonian modeling. An optical clock transition at |B| = 45.73 mT along the c axis of the LN crystal is successfully found by calculation. To show the pressure-dependent behavior of optical clock transition, the variation of such transition under hydrostatic pressure up to 3 GPa is also obtained theoretically. The calculated results show that applying external pressure is an effective way to control these transitions of RE ion doped crystal. Moreover, the optical coherence time T2 at zero magnetic field for 171Yb3+ ion with C3 symmetry in the LN crystal is estimated by our calculations. The calculated results indicate that if the magnetic field noise is 33 μT in the LN crystal, it is possible to find an optical clock transition with long coherence time T2 (≈382 μs) at the zero magnetic field. The present methods of seeking optical clock transition and calculating its coherence time T2 caused by a fluctuating magnetic field noise in the host crystal can be applied to other Kramers RE ions doped materials. Demonstration of acoustically improving charge transport characteristics of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (rrP3HT) based organic field effect transistor (OFET) fabricated on YZ lithium niobate piezoelectric substrate has been presented and analyzed. Owing to the acoustoelectric (AE) effect, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagating through the substrate transfers its momentum and energy to the charges in the rrP3HT channel, reducing the effective energy gap between the charge hopping states, which leads to a decrease in charge trapping and an increase in path conductivity and number of paths for charge transport. Hence, a significant increase in drain current and mobility and a substantial reduction in gate voltage were observed in the presence of SAW. The AE effect has been especially predominant in devices with smaller channel width, depicting that gate voltage brought down by 30 V provided drain current equivalent to that obtained in the absence of SAW. The bias stress analysis of the devices showed an increase in current instead of the decrease, generally seen with respect to time, reinforcing that the long term charge trapping effect in OFETs can be compensated with the propagation of SAW leading to enhanced device stability. Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), also known as lithium niobate on insulator, is an important integrated optical platform due to its broad transparency window (from ultraviolet to mid-infrared) and exceptional nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. TFLN is a revolutionary technology that revitalizes micro/nano photonics based on LN, which holds prime importance in on-chip frequency conversion owing to its remarkable NLO properties. This review focuses on the optical nonlinearity of thin film lithium niobate and its applications in integrated optics. We commence with a brief overview of the TFLN platform. Followed by an introduction to the common device structures. We then present the recent advancements of TFLN in NLO frequency conversion, including χ (2) based optical frequency generation processes (second harmonic generation, sum frequency generation, and difference frequency generation, etc), frequency comb generation, and supercontinuum generation, etc. Finally, we propose future prospects for nonlinear photonic integrated circuits based on the TFLN platform.
