Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate effects of a sweet almond meal (SAM) as a source of protein on performance and immune responses of broiler chickens. Treatments consisted of different levels of SAM (7%, 14%, 21% and 28% of diet) and control diet that was performed in a completely randomized design in 42 days. Body weight gain (BWG) and feed intake (FI) were recorded weekly. Carcass characteristics and blood variables were measured on the 42 day of age. Immune response to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) was assessed at d 35 and d 42 (7 days after each injection). White blood cell count was done at d 28. The results showed that chickens fed 28% of SAM had lowest FI during the experiment. During grower period and also whole period of experiment, BWG was highest in chickens that consumed 7% SAM. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) significantly increased in chickens fed 28% SAM compared to the other treatments during grower period and also whole period of the experiment. The relative weight of thigh and breast significantly decreased and the relative weight of GIT increased by increasing levels of SAM in the diet. The concentration of cholesterol and LDL significantly decreased in chickens that consumed SAM in the diet. However, the highest glucose and HDL concentration were observed in chickens fed 28% SAM in the diet. Treatments did not have a significant effect on the immune response of broilers (primary and secondary SRBC antibody titres, relative weights of spleen and bursa of fabricius and white blood cell count) (p > 0.05). The results of this study show that a diet supplemented with SAM at the level of 14%, due to the improved FCR and decreased blood cholesterol and LDL concentration, can be a good replacement for soybean meal in broiler chicken's nutrition.

Aim: The association between different lipid profiles and the extent of the coronary lesion in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has been rarely reported in epidemiological and clinical studies. This study aimed to evaluate the association between different lipid profiles and the extent of coronary atherosclerotic disease lesions in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Method: In our study, we analyzed data for 50 consecutive patients, with acute myocardial infarction undergoing coronary angiography at the Clinical Hospital of Tetovo. Patients were classified by coronary angiography into one-vessel disease (1VD), two-vessel disease (2VD), and three-vessel disease (3VD), with obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), defined as ≥50% angiographic stenosis. Laboratory analysis for lipid fractions was performed. Results: One-way analysis of variance, showed a statistically significant association between the mean of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TC/HDL) and the number of coronary arteries involved with an obstructive lesion (p=0.021). No significant association showed between extent of coronary artery lesion and non-HDL (p=0.33), HDL (p=0.438), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) (p= 0.713), triglycerides (TG) (p=0.352), and TG/HDL ratio (p=0.143). In multiple regression analysis, TC/HDL ratio value statistically significantly predicted the extent of the coronary atherosclerotic lesion (p=0.044). Conclusion: The results of our study showed that TC to HDL ratio (TC/HDL), appeared as the most powerful marker of extension of the coronary lesion in patients with AMI. In patients with suspected CAD, this fact makes it possible for the TC / HDL ratio to be used as an easy and non-invasive method to measure the extent and severity of coronary heart disease. The microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) catalyzes the transfer of triglyceride, cholesteryl ester, and phosphatidylcholine between phospholipid surfaces. The 97-kD subunit imparts lipid transfer activity and thus plays a role in the assembly of apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins. We tested whether polymorphisms in the promoter region of the large subunit of the MTP gene might be related to different plasma lipid variables, atherosclerosis, and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). We screened 838 bp in the promoter region of the MTP gene by PCR-SSCP and identified two polymorphisms at positions −400 (MTP/−400 (A→t)) and −164 (MTP/−164 (T→c)), the latter being situated on a putative sterol responsive element (SRE) consensus sequence. The two polymorphisms, investigated in 622 male patients with MI and in 728 age-matched controls participating in the ECTIM Study, were in nearly complete linkage disequilibrium (|D′| = ′0.98, less frequent alleles being preferentially associated, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in genotype or allele frequencies between patients with MI and controls. Moreover, no significant associations between the two promoter polymorphisms and several lipid variables measured in the control groups of the ECTIM Study or coronary artery stenosis, angiographically assessed in patients with MI, were detected. Early growth response factor (EGR)-1 may play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis by inducing the expression of several relevant genes which contribute to the complex modulation of vascular structure and function, leading to vascular occlusive lesions. To investigate the possible role of molecular variants in the human EGR-1 gene for the predisposition to atherosclerosis or coronary heart disease we screened the 5'- and 3'- flanking regions and the entire coding sequence for polymorphisms by polymerase chain reaction/single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis and sequencing. Male patients (n=615) with myocardial infarction and 720 age-matched, male control subjects of the Etude Cas-Témoin de l'Infarctus du Myocarde were genotyped for two newly identified polymorphisms in the 5'- (C-151T) and 3'- (T+861C) flanking region of the EGR-1 gene using hybridization with allele-specific oligonucleotides. Allele and genotype frequencies did not significantly differ between patients with myocardial infarction and control subjects without coronary heart disease. In controls not taking hypolipidemic drugs there was a significant association of the –151T allele with lower plasma levels of total cholesterol (P=0.029), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.025) and apolipoprotein B (P=0.038) and a higher ratio of high-density to low-density lipoprotein (P=0.049) than with the C-151 allele. We conclude that the C-151T polymorphism of the EGR-1 gene may contribute to modifications of the lipid metabolism. Our findings need to be replicated in independent studies, and in vitro promoter studies should evaluate the functional consequence of the –151T allele, which disrupts a consensus core sequence for the ubiquitous transcription factor activator protein 4.
