AbstractGiven the escalating demand for renewable biofuels amidst the continual consumption of fossil energy, the exploration and identification of microalgal strains for biodiesel production have become crucial. In this study, a microalgal strain named HDMA-12 was isolated from Lake Chenjiadayuan in China to evaluate its biodiesel potential. Phylogenetic analysis of its internal transcribed spacer sequences revealed HDMA-12 as a new molecular record in the genus Coelastrum. When cultivated in BG11 basal medium, HDMA-12 achieved a biomass of 635.7 mg L−1 and a lipid content of 26.4%. Furthermore, the fatty acid methyl ester profile of HDMA-12 exhibited favorable combustion characteristics. Subjected to 200 mM NaCl stress, HDMA-12 reached its maximum biomass of 751.5 mg L−1 and a lipid content of 28.9%. The genus Ephedra Tourn. ex L. (Ephedraceae) still exhibits taxonomic complexity that has not yet been resolved. This study aimed to determine the taxonomic identity of the Ephedra species in Egypt and identify the fatty acid profile and its diversity at the gender level as a taxonomic tool for specimens lacking reproductive cones. The current study provides a pioneering approach that distinguishes Ephedra species at the gender level. A total of 120 fresh individuals were collected from 20 locations representing different habitats where Ephedra plants grow in Egypt. In addition, herbarium specimens were deposited in Egyptian herbaria. The studied morphological traits included 30 vegetative characteristics and 72 traits of the reproductive organs of both genders. The fatty acid content was measured using gas–mass chromatography (GC-Mass). The taxonomic revision revealed that the Genus Ephedra was represented in the Egyptian flora by five species, Ephedra alata in section Alatae and E. aphylla, E. ciliata, E. foemina, and E. pachyclada in section Ephedra. South Sinai hosts these five species and represents the center of diversity for this genus in Egypt. The vegetative characteristics were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA), which revealed a distinct separation of the five studied species. Similarly, the cone traits treated by hierarchical clustering revealed intra-gender variations. The taxonomic key was developed based on the morphological traits to distinguish the studied species at the gender level. In total, 51 fatty acids were identified from the studied species and grouped as 18 saturated, 16 monounsaturated, and 17 polyunsaturated fatty acids. In the absence of reproductive cones, the lipid content and fatty acid composition of the vegetative parts displayed significant interspecific and intra-gender variations. Therefore, fatty acids can be used to efficiently identify the studied species when they lack reproductive cones. This study proved the efficacy of a multidisciplinary approach to identify Ephedra species at the gender level and recommends this trend for future studies of this genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Managed populations of the alfalfa leafcutting bee (ALCB), Megachile rotundata (F.), are often not sustainable. In addition to numerous mortality factors that contribute to this, the dense bee populations used to maximize alfalfa pollination quickly deplete floral resources available to bees later in the summer. Providing alternative floral resources as alfalfa declines may help to improve ALCB reproduction. Methods: We examined the relationship between floral resource availability and ALCB reproduction and offspring condition via (1) a field study using alfalfa plots with and without late-blooming wildflower strips to supply food beyond alfalfa bloom, and (2) a field-cage study in which we provided bees with alfalfa, wildflowers, or both as food resources. Results: In the field study, bee cell production closely followed alfalfa floral density with an initial peak followed by large declines prior to wildflower bloom. Few bees visited wildflower strips, whose presence or absence was not associated with any measure of bee reproduction. However, we found that female offspring from cells provisioned earlier in the season, when alfalfa predominated as a source of provisions, eclosed with greater body sizes and proportion body lipids relative to total body mass. For bees restricted to cages, the proportion of offspring that survived to adults was highest on pure alfalfa diets. Adding wildflowers to cages with alfalfa did not affect adult offspring production or female offspring body size and lipid content. Furthermore, although similar numbers of adults were produced on wildflowers alone as with alfalfa alone, females eclosed with smaller body sizes and lower proportion body lipids on wildflowers despite the higher protein content we estimated for wildflower pollen. We found no evidence that adding the late-season wildflower species that we chose to plant enhanced ALCB offspring numbers. Our results highlight the importance of considering multiple measures of reproductive success, including offspring body size and lipid stores, when designing and evaluating floral resource management strategies for agroecosystems. The microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Tetraselmis chuii offer several attractive attributes as aquaculture feed. Biomass production of C. vulgaris and T. chuii is relatively expensive because it requires high operation and substrate cost. Use of food industry waste is one of the promising solutions to reduce the substrate cost. In this research the impact of diverse concentration was filtered and centrifuged, food wastewater (FWW) was scrutinized as an alternative intermediate for microalgal bioremediation, lipid yield and cell growth. C. vulgaris had superior lipid accumulation and cell growth at 75% level and T. chuii had enhanced lipid accumulation and cell growth at 75% with the most explicit growth rate (0.27 d− 1) and maximum biomass formation rate (0.1–0.18 gL− 1 d− 1) and lipid content (33.80 ± 0.88% and 35.04 ± 2.05%) respectively. The microalgae cells not only improved with FWW feeding and the level of COD (80.97–66.17%), BOD (81.13–66.81%), TN (55.88–22.06%) and certain heavy metals like zinc (99.72–99.52%) manganese (72.09–65.17%) nickel (50.68–34.41%), NO3N (50.68–42.59%) ferric (57.14–65.71%) cadmium (83.51–86.64%) lead (48.83–97.21%) and arsenic (55.13–55.00%) were efficiently removed from FWW at different dilution concentrations. C18:0/C18:1 were the major fatty acids in lipids which show a vast potential of microalgae for biodiesel fabrication and instantaneous bioremediation procedure using FWW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Identifying the sensory properties of fish consumers is important for providing their preferred seafood. Odor, flavor, texture, and appearance affected the sensory preference for fish. Moreover, several compounds are involved in sensory preference. This study focused on lipids that affect preference for seafood and examined the lipid content preference in marlin Kajikia audax sashimi. First, lipid contents and fatty acid compositions of different individual sizes and body parts of marlin were compared. Next, the preference for overall, taste, texture, odor, aftertaste, and lipid content in marlin sashimi taken from different parts of the body with different amounts of lipids was investigated using the paired preference method. Then the relationship of lipid content preference with other preferences were also evaluated using the Chi-square test. The crude lipid of big-sized marlin (51.1-55.1 kg) was 9.5%-13.2%, and the crude lipid of small-sized marlin (23.5-30.0 kg) was 0.8%-1.2%. The dorsal parts of big-sized marlin had lipid contents in the anterior parts higher than those in the posterior parts (p < 0.05). Whereas no differences were observed in the fatty acid composition of different body parts. The lipid content preference for the anterior dorsal part (high lipid part) was higher than that for the posterior dorsal part (lower lipid part) (p < 0.05). However, no difference in overall preference was observed. Additionally, the relationship between lipid content preference and other preference were indicated that the high lipid content parts preferred group significantly preferred the high lipid content parts at overall and taste evaluation (p < 0.01). On the other hand, the low lipid content parts preferred groups showed opposite evaluation. Therefore, the lipid content was associated with the preference for marlin sashimi and be classified into two groups: one prefers high lipid sashimi and the other prefers low lipid sashimi. The sinking of diatoms is critical to the formation of oceanic biological pumps and coastal hypoxic zones. However, little is known about the effects of different nutrient restrictions on diatom sinking. In this study, we measured the sinking velocity (SV) of Thalassiosira weissflogii using a new phytoplankton video observation instrument and analyzed major biochemical components under varying nutrient conditions. Our results showed that the SV of T. weissflogii under different nutrient limitation conditions varied substantially. The highest SV of (1.77 ± 0.02) m/d was obtained under nitrate limitation, significantly surpassing that under phosphate limitation at (0.98 ± 0.13) m/d. As the nutrient limitation was released, the SV steadily decreased to (0.32 ± 0.03) m/d and (0.15 ± 0.05) m/d, respectively. Notably, under conditions with limited nitrate and phosphate concentrations, the SV values of T. weissflogii significantly positively correlated with the lipid content (P < 0.001), with R2 values of 0.86 and 0.69, respectively. The change of the phytoplankton SV was primarily related to the intracellular composition, which is controlled by nutrient conditions but did not significantly correlate with transparent extracellular polymer and biosilica contents. The results of this study help to understand the regulation of the vertical sinking process of diatoms by nutrient restriction and provide new insights into phytoplankton dynamics and their relationship with the marine nutrient structure. Tea foam properties, crucial indicators of tea quality, have gained renewed interest due to their potential applications in innovative beverages and foods. This study investigated the foaming properties and chemical foundations of six major tea categories through morphological observations and biochemical analyses. White tea exhibited the highest foaming ability at 56.28%, while black tea showed the best foam stability at 84.01%. Conversely, green tea had the lowest foaming ability (10.83%) and foam stability (54.24%). These superior foaming characteristics are attributed to the relatively low lipid content and acidic pH values. Surprisingly, no significant correlation was found between tea saponin content and foaming properties. Instead, specific amino acids (including Tyr, Gaba, Phe, Ile, and Leu) and catechins (GA and CG) were identified as potential contributors. These results deepen our understanding of tea foam formation and offer insights into utilizing tea-derived plant-based foams in food products.

Digestion of ultra‐high temperature milk with different levels of fat content was examined in vitro under semi‐dynamic conditions with real‐time measurements of viscosity. All milk viscosity increased during the gastric phase despite digestive fluid dilution due to protein aggregation. Higher fat formulations presented greater viscosity and denser microstructure with larger mean droplet size. It experienced faster proteolysis and lipolysis throughout digestion with 524 μmol free fatty acids released compared with semi‐skimmed milk (467 μmol), but had lower conversion of triglycerides at the intestinal phase terminus. Consumers tend to buy meat based on visual physical characteristics, which are affected by the chemical composition of the meat, and there is very little known about the chemical composition of the meat of giraffe. This study therefore aims to broaden the knowledge base on the chemical composition of giraffe meat, rib bone and liver. Eight different muscles from 15 giraffes were analyzed to determine the chemical composition, yielding an average moisture of 77.2 ± 0.09 g/100 g meat, an average protein of 20.8 ± 0.09 g/100 g meat, an average intramuscular fat (IMF) of 1.4 ± 0.03 g/100 g meat and an average ash of 1.1 ± 0.01 g/100 g meat. There was a significant interaction between sex and muscle for the moisture, protein and ash contents, while only muscle had an effect on the fat content. The mineral content of the bone, liver and Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle was also analyzed, and bone was found to be a rich source of calcium (highest concentration), whilst the liver had the highest concentration of iron. This study investigated the effects of adding bile acids (BA) to the feed on several biological aspects of Yellow River carp (Cyprinus carpio). The experimental design covered four groups, namely, CT, BA1, BA2, and BA3, fed diets containing 0 mL/kg, 0.1 mL/kg, 1.0 mL/kg, and 10.0 mL/kg of BA, respectively, and the Yellow River carp with an initial body weight of 46.13±0.74 g were fed for 28 days. The results revealed that BA increased trypsin and lipase activities, positively influencing growth performance. Additionally, it enhanced the activity of intestinal antioxidant-related enzymes and the expression of related genes. Meanwhile, our findings suggested that the addition of BA might restrict hepatic lipid deposition by inhibiting lipogenesis-related genes and stimulating lipolysis-related genes. Furthermore, BA significantly altered the intestinal microorganisms' flora structure, leading to a decrease in the relative abundance of Proteobacteria.

Due to non-renewability of fossil fuels and various environmental problems associated with their use, there is a growing interest in producing biodiesel from microalgae. Finding novel microalgal strains with desired characteristics such as rapid growth rates, high lipid productivity, and suitable fatty acid compositions is important for the production of biodiesel. Comparatively, photoautotrophic cultivation of microalgae results in low biomass yields and lipid productivities. Mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultures, in contrast, lead to higher biomass and lipid productivities but their productivities are species specific and depend a lot on the organic carbon source and culture conditions. In the present study, the potential of Scenedesmus dimorphus for biodiesel oil production under mixotrophic culture was investigated. The effects of organic carbon sources (glucose, ethanol and glycerol) on growth, biomass yields, lipid contents, lipid productivities and fatty acids compositions of Scenedesmus dimorphus in mixotrophic cultures were investigated. In comparison to photoautotrophic cultures, mixotrophic cultures produced significantly higher biomass concentration, lipid content, and lipid productivities (P≤0.05) under all the cultivation conditions investigated. The maximum biomass and lipid productivities achieved by mixotrophic culture were 83.88±0.05 and 17.11±0.04 mg L−1 day−1 respectively which are more than 2.6 and 3.1 folds higher than those obtained under photoautotrophic condition. Using glucose as the organic carbon source was better than ethanol and glycerol in terms of biomass and lipid productivities (glucose > ethanol > glycerol). The majority of the produced fatty acids were composed of C16 and C18 fatty acids. The two most abundant fatty acids in all the cultures were linolenic and palmitic acids. The values of biodiesel properties of oil obtained from S. dimorphus are within the American (ASTM D6751) and European (EN 14214) biodiesel specifications. The results show that S. dimorphus has good potentials for biodiesel oil production and that the productivity can be enhanced by mixotrophic cultivation.

The efficient management and treatment of pharmaceutical industry wastewater (PIWW) have become a serious environmental issue due to its high toxicity. To overcome this problem, the present study deals with the phycoremediation of PIWW using Chlorella vulgaris microalga isolated from the Ganga River at Haridwar, India. For this, response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) tools were used to identify the best reduction of total phosphorus (TP) and total Kjeldahl's nitrogen (TKN) based pollutants along with the lipid production efficiency of C. vulgaris. Three different concentrations of pharmaceutical wastewater (0, 50, and 100%), operating temperatures (20, 25, and 30 °C), and light intensity (2000, 3000, and 4000 lx) were used to design the phycoremediation experiments having 6:18 h of dark/light period and reactor functional volume of 15L. Findings revealed that C. vulgaris was good enough to remove maximum TP (90.35%), TKN (83.55%) along 20.88% of lipid yield at 25.62 °C temperature, 60.73% PIWW concentration, and 4000 lx of light intensity, respectively. Based on the model performance and validation results, ANN showed more accuracy as compared to the RSM tool. Therefore, the findings of this study showed that C. vulgaris is capable of treating PIWW efficiently along with significant production of lipid content which can further be used in various applications including biofuel production. The paper presents data on the influence of electromagnetic radiation on the organism of honey bees. For this, three groups of bee families were formed. Bee families of the control group were kept under the influence of electromagnetic radiation from the Sun. In the 1st experimental group, offspring were exposed to radiation with a frequency of 2580 MHz. For this, we used a GZ-122 microwave generator with an output power of 1×10-12 W. Irradiation was carried out in a chamber isolated from light and shielded from microwave radiation, which was located in a thermally and sound-insulated room shielded from microwave radiation. In experiments with bee brood, the temperature was maintained at 35 °С in shielded TS-80 thermostats. Irradiation was carried out in the following mode: 9 hours of irradiation and 7 hours of pause (without irradiation). This cycle was repeated 3 times in a row. The bee families of the second experimental group were under the influence of the same generator, which irradiated the brood in the following mode: 16 hours of irradiation and 7 hours of pause (without irradiation). This cycle was repeated 3 times in a row. It was established that bees that developed under long-term artificial irradiation acquire the morphophysiological characteristics of bees with fewer reserve nutrients. Long-term radiation exposure negatively affects the storage of nutrients in the form of lipids by 25.69 % (P < 0.05), the reduction of total nitrogen by 16.93 % (P < 0.05). Such a negative trend was revealed against the background of a 14.1 % lower mass (P < 0.01) compared to bees that developed under natural irradiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) males exhibit accelerated sexual maturation when their diet is supplemented with raspberry ketone (RK) for 48 h following emergence, which is beneficial for sterile insect technique operation. The present study tests whether RK supplementation makes Qfly more vulnerable to starvation or desiccation. Results: Flies were fed for 48 h with a yeast hydrolysate and sugar diet (1:3) that contained 0% RK (control), 1.25% RK (low dose) or 5% RK (high dose) to test subsequent vulnerability to starvation and desiccation. RK feeding decreased body weight and water content in males and increased lipid levels in both sexes before exposure to any stress treatment. Under nutritional stress, flies fed the low RK dose, but not the high RK dose, had higher survival than controls. Under desiccation stress, flies fed both the low and high RK doses had lower survival than the controls. Body weight, water content and lipid reserves at death were all affected by RK dose when under nutritional stress, but not when under desiccation stress. In the absence of stress, body weight at death was higher than controls in flies provided with the high RK dose and lipids were lower than controls in flies provided with the low RK dose. Conclusion: Feeding with RK makes Qflies more vulnerable to desiccation but not starvation. In most conditions, it is expected that the disadvantage of increased desiccation vulnerability would be outweighed by the benefits of accelerated sexual maturation in RK‐fed young adult Qflies. © 2023 The Authors. Lipid content has an important effect on rice eating quality, but the effects of fertilizer application rate on the lipid synthesis and eating quality of rice are not well understood. Potassium (K) has a strong influence on rice quality and the requirement for K fertilizer in rice is greater than for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers. To investigate the effects of K fertilizer on the lipid synthesis and eating quality of rice, we used Nanjing 9108 (NJ9108, japonica) and IR72 (indica) rice as experimental materials and four K levels: K0 (0 kg ha–1), K1 (90 kg ha–1), K2 (135 kg ha–1) and K3 (180 kg ha–1). The results showed that the lipid content, free fatty acid (FFA) content, unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content, malonyl-CoA (MCA) content, phosphatidic acid (PA) content, lipid synthesis-related enzyme activities and eating quality first increased and then decreased with increasing K in both cultivars. The maximum values were obtained under K2. However, the saturated fatty acid (SFA) content showed the opposite trend. No significant differences were found in pyruvate (PYR) content among the K treatments. The protein and oxaloacetic acid (OAA) contents and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) activity of NJ9108 first decreased and then increased with increasing K, and the minimum values were obtained under K2; while IR72 showed the opposite trend and the maximum values were obtained under K1. Overall, increasing K optimized the fatty acid components and increased the lipid content and eating quality of rice by enhancing lipid synthesis-related enzyme activities and regulating substrate competition for lipid and protein synthesis. The optimal K application rate for lipid synthesis, eating quality and grain yield was 135 kg ha–1 for both cultivars.

The use of whole and visible insects is poorly accepted in Western countries, and this remains a significant challenge for product development. However, using insect-based protein-rich ingredients, like protein concentrate, can improve levels of consumer approval. The residual lipid content in insect protein concentrates can influence their techno-functional properties. Our study therefore aimed to evaluate the impact of the residual lipid content on the protein structure and foaming properties of a mealworm protein concentrate. Our results showed that the protein content increased from 78.01 to 84.82 % after using chloroform-methanol for lipid removal. The particle size distribution shifted from a bimodal to a unimodal pattern, and the surface hydrophobicity decreased from 267.02 to 48.91 after completely removing lipids by chloroform-methanol, with no noticeable impact on the protein profile. The foaming capacity improved, resulting in the formation of a firm and fluffy foam with high stability over time. These results highlight the importance of controlling the residual lipid content in mealworm protein concentrates to enhance their techno-functional properties. The next steps will entail comprehensively characterizing the lipid profile and exploring the various mechanisms contributing to the techno-functional properties.

In order to conquer the block of high cost and low yields which limit to realize the commercialization of microalgal biodiesel, the mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultivation of Scenedesmus quadricauda FACHB-1297 fed on xylose was separately studied employing six forms of media: phosphorus sufficient, phosphorus restricted, and phosphorus starvation were combined with nitrogen sufficient and nitrogen starvation conditions. The maximum lipid content (about 41% of dry weight) was obtained on the 5th day (heterotrophic cultivation) and 8th day (mixotrophic cultivation) under the nitrogen starved and phosphorus sufficient (N0&P) conditions, which was about twofold in comparison to the final lipid content on the sufficient nitrogen condition (control). Under mixotrophic and heterotrophic modes, the highest lipid production was achieved in the N0&P trial, with the value of 274.96 mg/L and 193.77 mg/L, respectively. Xylose utilization rate of 30–96% under heterotrophic modes was apparently higher than that of 20–50% in mixotrophic modes. In contrast, phosphorus uptake rate of 100% under mixotrophic cultivation was significantly more than that of 60–90% in heterotrophic cultivation. Furthermore, under the condition of heterotrophic cultivation using xylose as a carbon source, the phosphorus had a positive impact on microalgae cell synthesis and the lipid content enhanced with the augmentation in phosphorus concentrations. We suggested that sufficient phosphorus should be supplied for obtaining higher microalgal lipid production in the lack of nitrogen under xylose heterotrophic/mixotrophic condition. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) regulates cellular lipid content, whereas pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) increases IGF-1 bioavailability. Using in vitro-matured cumulus-oocyte complexes, we aimed to evaluate the impact of PAPP-A on the blastocyst lipid content, embryo cryotolerance and embryonic transcriptional profile. We determined that PAPP-A did not affect the lipid content of oocytes, blastocysts, or blastocyst yield (P > 0.05). However, PAPP-A modulated the embryo transcriptional profiles by downregulating PPARGC1A and AKR1B1, which are related to lipid metabolism; CASP9, a pro-apoptotic gene; and IFN-τ, a marker of embryo quality (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the use of PAPP-A improved blastocyst re-expansion in the first 3 h of culture after vitrification (P < 0.05). Although PAPP-A did not affect the blastocyst lipid content or embryo production, we suggest that embryonic transcriptional modulation could contribute to maintain the balance in embryo lipid metabolism. The way to solve the problem of correcting technological indicators, in particular porosity and moisture content, in extruded protein-fat systems based on soybean, rapeseed, hemp meal, and corn grits is considered. The peculiarity of the work is the substantiation of the rational ratio of the content of moisture and lipids in the raw components of the extrudate, which is an important aspect of rationalizing the composition and improving the texture of innovative extruded products based on the specified raw materials. The object of the research is technological indicators, in particular the porosity and moisture content of the extruded protein-fat system, depending on the moisture and lipid content in the raw components. A rational ratio of moisture content (10.5...12.5 %) and lipids (3.5...5.0 %) in the raw material for the extruded protein-fat system was determined. The use of refined palm olein as an oil product resistant to oxidative deterioration, which should be added to raw components in order to correct the technological properties of the finished product, is substantiated. The developed protein-fat system of reasonable composition has an advantage over a commercial similar product in terms of crude protein content (29.0 % vs. 8.2 %), porosity (130.0 % vs. 105.0 %) and cost ($ 916/t vs. $ 2,798/t). The obtained data are explained by the fact that a complex of components was used, some of which are production waste, with reasonable moisture and lipid content, which improved the technological characteristics of the extrudate. An applied aspect of using this scientific result is the possibility of rationalizing the extrusion process of oilseed meal to achieve the desired texture, porosity and stability of the lipid component of the product. In this study, microalgae–bacteria (MB) systems using saline conditions (3 and 5% salinity) were built in order to use waste-activated sludge (AS) as raw material for cultivating lipid-rich microalgae. Algae were observed to be flourishing in 60 days of operation, which totally used the N and P released from the sludge biomass. A prominent improvement of lipid content in MB consortia was obtained under algae growth and salinity stimulation, which occupied 119–136 mg/g-SS rather than a low content of 12.1 mg/g-SS in AS. Lipid enrichment also brought a 3.1–3.3 times total heat release (THR) in the MB biomass. The marine spherical algae Porphyridium, as well as filamentous Geitlerinema, Nodularia, Leptolyngbya were found to be the main lipid producers and self-flocculated to 23.0% (R1) and 33.5% (R2) volume under the effect of residue EPS. This study had a big meaning in not only waste sludge reduction but also in manufacturing useful bioenergy products. Microalgal biodiesel as a substitute for fossil energy has attracted extensive attention. However, the high cost of microalgae cultivation limits the industrial production of microalgal biodiesel. The co-culture system may offer a means to increase microalgae's biomass production. In this study, Streptomyces strains were selected to construct and optimize co-culture systems with Monoraphidium sp. HDMA-11 and the algal cell biomass, lipid content, phycocyanin content, starch content, and fatty acid composition were determined. The results showed that Streptomyces nojiriensis significantly promoted Monoraphidium sp. HDMA-11 growth and a co-culture system were established. Orthogonal experiments showed that the Monoraphidium sp. HDMA-11 biomass was further increased when the initial culture pH was 7.5, the inoculation time of Streptomyces strain supernatants was 36 h, the volume ratio of microalgal actinomycetes was 1:1, and no additional acetic acid was added. Under these conditions, compared with monocultured Monoraphidium sp. HDMA-11, the cell biomass and lipid productivity of the co-culture system increased by 525.8 and 155.1%, respectively. Simple nutritional condition indicators are needed to provide information on the influence of ecosystem changes on the populations of the American lobster Homarus americanus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) on various timescales. This study validates the use of the water content (% wet mass) of the digestive gland as an indicator of nutritional condition in the lobster (carapace length 65–127 mm) by assessing its capacity to estimate digestive-gland lipid reserves under variable environmental and physiological conditions. The validation was completed using samples from wild lobsters dissected shortly after being captured during different seasons and in various locations in the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL), and data from an environmentally realistic laboratory study on post-ovigerous females from the southern and the northern GSL sampled at different stages of their molt cycle. In both wild and experimental lobsters, water content was the best predictor of lipid reserves compared to other condition indicators (i.e. condition factor, various digestive-gland indices, and hemolymph Brix index). A strong linear relationship was found between lipid and water contents. Lipid content and interrelated molting status were identified as two important factors leading to the variations in water-fat regression equations among groups of wild or experimental lobsters. As lipid content could vary spatiotemporally in unexpected ways in a changing environment, it is recommended to use a sampling event-specific regression line to estimate digestive-gland lipid content from measured water content in field monitoring programs. Municipal wastewater contains a high amount of nutrients, which are suitable to cultivate microalgae. This wastewater is considered a potential nutrient source for microalgae cultivation in order to reduce the manufacturing cost for biodiesel production. The present study was focused on the growth and lipid accumulation of newly isolated marine diatom by using municipal wastewater as a culture medium. This diatom was identified as Amphora sp. RRSE1 based on its morphological and molecular characteristics. The optimal medium consists of 80% municipal wastewater mixed with 20% standard De Walne's medium, at pH 8 was supported on the maximum growth and lipid production. It was observed that the peak concentration of biomass was 17.225 mg/L, corresponding to the productivity of 1.46 mg/L/day. The lipid concentration of the biomass was 10.9 mg/L, which shows the maximum productivity of 0.92 mg/L/day. The highest lipid content of 63.12% was achieved on the 14th day of culture. Moreover, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic and inorganic compounds present in the biomass samples. In addition to that, Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GCMS) and 1H NMR analyses were also achieved to study the fatty acid methyl ester on the extracted lipids. This study indicates that the microalga Amphora sp. RRSE1 is capable of utilizing nutrients from municipal wastewater and this strain could be a promising feedstock for biofuel production. Ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and peptide YY (PYY) are potent hormones mediating food intake according to the nutritional status in fish. However, limited information is available on these genes and their expression in response to nutrition in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus). A comparison analysis revealed that ghrelin and GLP-1 were relatively conserved in marine fish. PYYa and PYYb shared a low identity and were clustered to different PYY branches. Ghrelin, pyya, and pyyb mRNAs were highly expressed in the brain, while glp-1 was highly expressed in the gills and liver. The ghrelin mRNA expression was relatively high an hour post-feeding and decreased after 3 to 72 h of fasting. The glp-1 mRNA expression was increased after 6 to 24 h of fasting. The pyya mRNA expression was increased after 72 h of fasting, while the pyyb expression remained stable during fasting. The diet with 14% lipid promoted the expressions of glp-1, pyya, and pyyb, but inhibited the ghrelin expression. The ghrelin expression in the intestine was increased after palmitic acid, oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) incubation. OA decreased the expression of glp-1 and increased the expression of pyya. The expression of pyyb was downregulated by LA, DHA, and EPA. These results suggest the importance of ghrelin, glp-1, and pyy in coordinating food intake in response to fasting, dietary lipid concentration, and fatty acids in silver pomfret. Scleractinian corals are vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic disturbances and a significant loss of coral cover has been recorded over the last two decades. Sexual reproduction plays an essential role in the maintenance of threatened ecosystems. Corals alter their reproductive patterns in response to changes in local environmental conditions and in their physiological traits. This study aims to elucidate the influences of seasonal climatic factors and physiological variables on sexual reproduction in colonies of Pocillopora damicornis and Porites panamensis throughout the southern Mexican Pacific. Our results indicate that species respond differently to environmental and physiological changes. Both species show a relationship between reproductive activity and daylight hours; however, P. panamensis reproduction was also related to temperature, while P. damicornis with lipid content. Although the set of drivers involved in each stage of the reproductive cycle remains unclear, there is evidence that corals have adapted to the local conditions that, when non-optimal, could cause low rates of reproductive success. Consumers tend to buy meat based on visual physical characteristics, which are affected by the chemical composition of the meat, and there is very little known about the chemical composition of the meat of giraffe. This study therefore aims to broaden the knowledge base on the chemical composition of giraffe meat, rib bone and liver. Eight different muscles from 15 giraffes were analyzed to determine the chemical composition, yielding an average moisture of 77.2 ± 0.09 g/100 g meat, an average protein of 20.8 ± 0.09 g/100 g meat, an average intramuscular fat (IMF) of 1.4 ± 0.03 g/100 g meat and an average ash of 1.1 ± 0.01 g/100 g meat. There was a significant interaction between sex and muscle for the moisture, protein and ash contents, while only muscle had an effect on the fat content. The mineral content of the bone, liver and Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle was also analyzed, and bone was found to be a rich source of calcium (highest concentration), whilst the liver had the highest concentration of iron. The chemical composition of the giraffe meat was such that it could be classified as lean meat.

Abstract Background The non-catalytic region of tyrosine kinase (Nck) is an adaptor protein, which is ubiquitously expressed in many types of cells. In T cells, the Nck1 isoform promotes T cell receptor signalling as well as actin polymerisation. However, the role of Nck1 in the lipid metabolism in T cells is unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the Nck1 protein and Nck–CD3 interaction on lipid metabolism and on the physical and biological properties of Jurkat T cells, using a newly developed holotomographic microscope. Results Holotomographic microscopy showed that Nck1-knocked-out cells had membrane blebs and were irregular in shape compared to the rounded control cells. The cell size and volume of Nck1-deficient cells were comparable to those of the control cells. Nck1-knocked-out Jurkat T cells had a greater lipid content, lipid mass/cell mass ratio, and lipid metabolite levels than the control cells. Interestingly, treatment with a small molecule, AX-024, which inhibited Nck–CD3 interaction, also caused an increase in the lipid content in wild-type Jurkat T cells, as found in Nck1-deficient cells. Conclusions Knockout of Nck1 protein and hindrance of the Nck–CD3 interaction cause the elevation of lipid content in Jurkat T cells.

Mesopelagic fish, the most important daily vertically migrating community in the oceans, are characterized by high lipid content which may obscure the interpretation of stable isotopes analysis. Demersal fish, which are important consumers in the food web dominated by mesopelagic fish, also have a high lipid content. Here we collected 127 fish samples from the South China Sea and evaluated the effect of lipid contents on δ13C of mesopelagic and demersal fish. In lipid-extracted mesopelagic fish, the C/N content ratio (<5.5) shows a clear correlation with Δδ13C (the offset of bulk and lipid-extracted δ13C values), especially in non-migratory and semi-migratory species; these values were less correlation in demersal fish. Based on our results, we suggest that mesopelagic and demersal fish in different regions of the South China Sea should be studied separately using appropriate correction models and less fit for the traditional model. Moreover, the C/N content ratio should be used cautiously for establishing the lipid normalization model, especially for the fish in migratory mesopelagic fish and demersal fish. Our results also reveal that mesopelagic fish across nearby regions could be analyzed together. Cultivation of the microalgae in the wastewater has gained profound interest in recent years owing to the significant advantages like removal of nutrients from the wastewater. In general, the growth of the microalgae Coelastrella sp. on the swine wastewater is effective despite the presence of pollutants. The current study discusses the removal of concentration of nitrate, ammonia and phosphorous in the wastewater. Further, the biomass productivity and lipid content of Coelastrella sp. were also determined. Based on the procured results, the concentrations of the total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen were decreased with the culturing duration. On the other hand, the copper oxide recorded the spike pattern along the cultured time. In contrast with the content of the ammonia and copper inhibiting the growth of the Coelastrella sp., with regard to the biomass and lipid productivity rate, the pre-treated wastewater reported superior growth rate of microalgae then untreated water. Aeration pre-treatment reduced the ammonia and copper contents in the wastewater which enable the impressive growth rate. Following an agronomic approach for the Ca enrichment of Rocha pears, this study aimed to assess the interactions between mineral nutrients in fruit tissues at harvest and after storage for 5 months and to characterize the implications on the profile of sugars and fatty acids (FA). A total of seven foliar sprays (with concentrations of 0.1–0.6 kg·ha−1 Ca(NO3)2 and 0.8–8 kg·ha−1 CaCl2) were applied to pear trees. After harvest, the fruits were stored for 5 months, in environmentally controlled chambers, and the mineral contents in five regions (on the equatorial section) of the fruits were assessed, while the sugar and FA content were quantified. For both dates, all foliar sprayed treatments, at different extends, increased Ca content in the center and near the epidermis of Rocha pear fruits and the levels of K, Mn, Fe, Zn and Cu also varied. At harvest, the Ca treatments did not affect the levels of sucrose, glucose, fructose and sorbitol and, after storage, their concentrations remained higher in Ca-treated fruits. Additionally, the tendency of the relative proportions of FA was C18:2 > C18:1 > C16:0 > C18:3 > C18:0 > chains inferior to 16 C (<16:0), but after storage it was C18:2 > C16:0 > C18:3 > C18:0 > C18:1 > chains inferior to 16 C (<16:0). It is concluded that the heterogeneous distribution of Ca in the tissues of Rocha pear fruits results from its absorption in the peel after Ca(NO3)2 and CaCl2 sprays and from the xylemic flux in the core prior to maturity. Additionally, the hydrolysis of complex polysaccharides affects the contents of simpler sugars during maturation, ripening and senescence, while storage decreases the amount of total fatty acids (TFA), but the double bond index (DBI) indicate that cell membrane fluidity remains unaffected. The desizing efficiencies of starches are different. However, the reasons and mechanism for this appearance are still unclear. Therefore, desizing efficiencies of starches were measured, and the reasons for their difference were analyzed. Swelling ability and degree of crystallinity of starch films were tested to conform to the relation with desizing. The size residue on the desized yarns was collected to detect the difference in the proportion of nonstarch components and the structure of hydrolyzed starch. In addition, correlation analyses were conducted between the factors affecting hydrolysis and desizing efficiency. It was found that corn starch has the lowest desizing efficiency, and the efficiency of cassava starch was the highest. The largest proportion of protein was the main reason for inhibiting the desizing. Furthermore, a higher proportion of lipid and the lower swelling ability of starch film could also be an obstacle to desizing. Removing the nonstarch components and improving the swelling ability of film may be effective methods to improve the desizing efficiency of starch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic wastewater was used to culture granular sludge for 21 weeks at three sequencing batch reactor activated sludge process (SBR) under different photoperiods. The growth of algae changed granular oxygen distribution, which affected the composition of microbial communities. Different photoperiods were able to alter the formation of granular sludge and the microbial community granules. In short photoperiod (12 h/d) sludge could generate symbiotic algae-bacteria granules in the SBR. By contrast, the long photoperiod (24 h/d) promotes the growth of algae and Ascomycota early, and then inhibits algae, especially chlorophyta (only 1.18%). In the end, algae-bacteria-fungi granules were formed in long photoperiod (LP). By GC-MS and model calculation, the lipid content of algae-bacteria granules was 33.71% more than that of pure aerobic granular sludge. However, the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in algae-bacteria granules was as high as 43%, resulting in the quality of biodiesel prepared from algae-bacteria granule being slightly worse than that prepared from pure aerobic granular sludge. But both of them were better than biodiesel prepared from pure algae. The biodiesel content of algae-bacteria granule in short photoperiod (SP) and LP were 68.79 and 70.66 mg/g, respectively, which was better than that of pure aerobic particles (52.30 mg/g). Trace minerals participate in reproductive processes and are crucial for oocyte maturation. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of combined supplementation with copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) during bovine in vitro maturation (IVM) on subsequent embryo development and quality. The IVM medium was supplemented as follows: a) Control (no mineral supplementation); b) MScz (6 ng/mL Mn + 100 ng/mL Se + 200 ng/mL Cu + 400 ng/mL Zn); c) MScZ (6 ng/mL Mn + 100 ng/mL Se + 200 ng/mL Cu + 1200 ng/mL Zn); d) MSCz (6 ng/mL Mn + 100 ng/mL Se + 600 ng/mL Cu + 400 ng/mL Zn). Supplementation with MScz and MSCz produced more blastocysts compared with the control. Total blastocyst cell number was higher when minerals were added at any combination. Day-8 blastocysts derived from oocytes treated with minerals had lower intracellular reactive oxygen species concentration and lipid content than the control. In conclusion, combined supplementation with Cu, Mn, Se and Zn during bovine oocyte IVM increased in vitro production performance, improving embryo developmental ability and quality. Pomegranate produces fruit with high nutritional value. Of particular interest is the woody part of the seed, which influences consumer acceptability and is rich in bioactive components. The aim of this study was to morphoanatomically and biochemically characterize the tegmen of local and commercial pomegranates grown in Italy. SEM and a texturometer were used for morphoanatomical and hardness analysis, respectively, and gravimetric and Soxhlet extraction, as well as a GS-MS instrument, were used for chemical analysis. In addition to the classic morphometric parameters, we described, for the first time, the bundles on pomegranate tegmen, identifying four forms (FAN, TREE, COMB and RAMIFIED); local cultivars showed a higher variability compared to the commercial cultivars. Lignin content showed no correlation with seed strength. We developed a new hierarchical model in which geometric parameters and the resistant volume of the lignified tissue can explain the variability in hardness observed in the tests. Quantitative differences were observed in total lipids and unsaponifiable fractions; in particular, all oils were rich in unsaturated fatty acids. We propose that bundles form as a novel trait for characterization and a new hierarchical model to evaluate the hardness of seeds. The present study identified the pectinase-producing bacterium isolated from the contaminated broth as Bacillus sp. on 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The bacterium illustrated water-like droplets on the colony grown on the Sabouraud dextrose agar plate. It also exhibited multi-enzymes activities, such as pectinase, polygalacturonase, xylanase, and cellulase by using various agro-wastes as low-cost substrates. The orange peel was observed to be the best substrate among the agro-wastes used for maximum multienzymes (pectinase, polygalacturonase, xylanase, and cellulase). However, the bacterium demonstrated its capability to produce different enzymes according to the different substrates/agro-wastes used. The Plackett--Burman design was used to determine the essential influencing factors, while the Box Behnken design response surface methodology was for optimizing cultural conditions. At their optimal conditions (40°C incubation temperature, 24 h of incubation period, 1% w/v orange peel, and 2% v/v inoculum volume), the bacterium exhibited the maximum pectinase (9.49 ± 1.25 U/ml) and xylanase (16.27 ± 0.52 U/ml) activities. Furthermore, the study explored the ability of the bacterium to produce bacterial lipids and observed about 25% bacterial lipid content on a dry weight basis. Therefore, the bacterium is a good candidate for producing important multi-enzymes and subsequent agro-waste degradation controlling the environment, and facilitating waste management. Dunaliella parva overexpressing malic enzyme gene under nitrogen sufficient condition (DpME) and DpME-N− groups showed considerably high mRNA levels of DpME. ME activity was significantly enhanced by DpME overexpression, and nitrogen limitation caused a smaller increase. DpME overexpression and nitrogen limitation obviously enhanced lipid accumulation, and DpME overexpression had more obvious effect. Compared with control (wild type), lipid content (68.97%) obviously increased in DpME-N− group. Biodiesel production from microalgae presents an innovative solution for renewable energy. This study investigates biodiesel production using Tetradesmus obliquus ON506010.1 by optimizing substrates, selenium and gibberellic acid. Using 15 µg/L selenium, lipid content and biomass productivity reached 35.45 %±0.92 and 0.178 g/L/day ± 0.051. With 50 µM gibberellic acid, biomass productivity and lipid content peaked at 0.785 ± 0.101 g/L/day and 38.95 %±0.35, surpassing the control. Fatty acid composition, biodiesel properties, and mRNA expression of lipid synthesis enzymes (acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid desaturase (FAD)) correlated. Combining 10 µg/L selenium with 75 µM gibberellic acid with response surface methodology (RSM) increased lipid content (42.80 % ±0.11) and biomass productivity (0.964 g/L/day ± 0.128). ACC and FAD upregulation validated this enhancement, with a 4.4-fold increase in FAD expression. Fatty acid composition and most biodiesel properties met international standards demonstrating Tetradesmus obliquus ON506010.1′s potential for sustainable biodiesel production with better cold flow property and oxidative stability. Meat is the main source if high biological value proteins in human nutrition. Researches have been done to characterize meat quality through the chemical composition of three muscles from some bovines races specialized on milk and meat production, by gender, which have not been subjected to a process of conditioning before slaughter. Rhomboideus, Longossimus dorsi and Triceps brachial muscles were characterized by protein and lipid composition. Protein content ranged from 20.8% in Rhomboideus muscle from the males of Fleickveih breed and 21.83% in Longissimus dorsi muscle obtained at the same sex but at Pinzgauer race. The fat content varied in wide limits around 3%. Analysis of chemical composition of meat revealed the influence of sex, race, anatomical positioning of the muscle. Meat obtained has a poor quality, which revealed the need of refurbishment of these animals before slaughter.

A follow-up study on the use of ultrasonic sound for harvesting a mixed culture of microalgae from a small lake for biofuel feedstock has been carried out. Observations were made at the Agathis small lake of Universitas Indonesia during the rainy season. The aim of the study was to determine the microalgae community members in Agathis with the potential for lipid production and to determine the lipid concentration in the mixed culture biomass from Agathis, harvested using an ultrasound harvesting module (UHM). The results showed that there were 11 species of microalgae from 10 genera and four classes. Nine of the 11 species of microalgae found in Agathis have the ability to produce lipids. The total biomass obtained from water samples from all stations in Agathis was 25.18 g, and the average lipid content of the biomass of Agathis water samples in March 2020 was 55.5%.

The present study identified the pectinase-producing bacterium isolated from the contaminated broth as Bacillus sp. on 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The bacterium illustrated water-like droplets on the colony grown on the Sabouraud dextrose agar plate. It also exhibited multi-enzymes activities, such as pectinase, polygalacturonase, xylanase, and cellulase by using various agro-wastes as low-cost substrates. The orange peel was observed to be the best substrate among the agro-wastes used for maximum multi-enzymes (pectinase, polygalacturonase, xylanase, and cellulase). However, the bacterium demonstrated its capability to produce different enzymes according to the different substrates/agro-wastes used. The Plackett–Burman design was used to determine the essential influencing factors, while the Box Behnken design response surface methodology was for optimizing cultural conditions. At their optimal conditions (40°C incubation temperature, 24 h of incubation period, 1% w/v orange peel, and 2% v/v inoculum volume), the bacterium exhibited the maximum pectinase (9.49 ± 1.25 U/ml) and xylanase (16.27 ± 0.52 U/ml) activities. Furthermore, the study explored the ability of the bacterium to produce bacterial lipids and observed about 25% bacterial lipid content on a dry weight basis. Therefore, the bacterium is a good candidate for producing important multi-enzymes and subsequent agro-waste degradation controlling the environment, and facilitating waste management. Also, the bacterium can be a potential feedstock in producing renewable biofuel.

The high lipid content in porcine oocytes impairs in vitro embryo production (IVP). Here, we evaluated the influence of two different lipid modulators during in vitro maturation (IVM) on the embryo development and the lipid content of oocytes and embryos. In Experiment I, oocytes were exposed to 50 μM docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with (+) or without (−) the presence of porcine follicular fluid (pFF). In Experiment II, phenazine ethosulfate (PES) was added during IVM at two concentrations (0.5 and 0.05 μM). The pFF- with 50 μM DHA treatment impaired nuclear maturation, cleavage and blastocyst rates (p < 0.05). Oocytes in pFF- media accumulated less lipids (p < 0.05). The addition of 0.5 μ M PES reduced all development rates (p < 0.05) and resulted in higher lipid content for oocytes and embryos. Only 0.05 μM PES oocytes matured similarly to the control (p > 0.05), although embryo development and embryo lipid content was similar to 0.5 μM PES oocytes (p > 0.05). Thus, 50 μM DHA supplementation in the IVM medium without pFF impaired oocyte maturation and embryo development rates without interfering in oocyte lipid content even in the presence of pFF. Abstract Background Oleaginous microorganisms are sustainable alternatives for the production of biodiesel. Among them, oleaginous fungi are known for their rapid growth, short life cycles, no light requirement, easy scalability, and the ability to grow in cheap organic resources. Among all the sources used for biodiesel production, industrial wastewater streams have been least explored. We used oleaginous fungi to decontaminate sago processing wastewater and produce biodiesel. Results Among the 15 isolates screened for lipid production and starch utilization using the Nile red staining assay and amylase plate screening, three isolates accumulated > 20% (w/w) of their dry cell mass as lipids. The isolate ASEF14 exhibited the highest lipid accumulation (> 40%) and was identified as Aspergillus caespitosus based on the 28S rRNA gene sequencing. The maximum lipid content of 54.4% in synthetic medium (SM) and 37.2% in sago processing wastewater (SWW) was produced by the strain. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the fungal oil revealed the presence of functional peaks corresponding to major lipids. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the FTIR data revealed major changes in the fatty acid composition during the transition from the growth phase (Days 1–3) to the lipid accumulation phase (Days 4–7). The fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) analysis of fungal oil from SWW contained 43.82% and 9.62% of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, respectively. The composition and percentage of individual FAME derived from SWW were different from SM, indicating the effect of nutrient and fermentation time. The fuel attributes of the SM- and SWW-grown fungal biodiesel (kinematic viscosity, iodine value, cetane number, cloud and pour point, linolenic acid content, FA > 4 double bonds) met international (ASTM D6751, EN 14214) and national (IS 15607) biodiesel standards. In addition to biodiesel production, the strain removed various contaminants such as total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and cyanide up to 58.6%, 53.0%, 35.2%, 94.5%, 89.3%, 91.3%, 74.0%, 47.0%, and 53.84%, respectively, from SWW. Conclusion These findings suggested that A. caespitosus ASEF14 is a potential candidate with high lipid accumulating ability (37.27%), capable of using SWW as the primary growth medium. The medium and incubation time alter the FAME profile of this fungus. The physical properties of fungal oil were in accordance with the biodiesel standards. Moreover, it decontaminated SWW by reducing several polluting nutrients and toxicants. The fungal biodiesel produced by this cost-effective method could serve as an alternate path to meet global energy demand.

Microalgae have gained increased attention as an alternative source of bioenergy and eco-friendly. Wastewater is useful for microalgae cultivation because the nutrients in wastewater are consumed by microalgae. The salinity also can increase the lipid content of microalgae. The frozen seafood effluent is utilized for cultivating microalgae because it contains the nutrients and salinity for microalgae cultivation. The Chlorella vulgaris uses carbon dioxide to produce the renewable energy such as fuels and chemicals. These productions automatically reduce the consumption of fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, this research aimed to study the effect of various salinity concentrations on lipid content of Chlorella vulgaris. The salinity concentrations of frozen seafood effluent before cultivation for R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 was 1.34±0.01 ppt, 1.47±0.0 ppt, 2.96±0.04 ppt, 4.33±0.05 ppt and 6.11±0.05 ppt, respectively. After cultivation, the lipid content of Chlorella vulgaris was 2.82±0.5%, 2.20±0.8%, 1.31±0.7%, 1.83±0.8%, and 0.68±0.1% for R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5, respectively. According to the experiment, the various salinity concentrations had an effect on the lipid content of Chlorella vulgaris. The R1 was the original salinity concentration (1.34±0.01 ppt) of frozen seafood effluent which provided the maximum lipid content of Chlorella vulgaris after cultivation. Thus, the lipid content of Chlorella vulgaris was not representing the increasing trend under the difference of high salinity concentration. It can be concluded that the salinity concentration of the frozen seafood effluent from the factory was enough for Chlorella vulgaris cultivation and the nutrients in frozen seafood effluent were also removed after cultivation.
