This study aimed to carry out the morphological characterization of the remaining specimens of the Curraleiro horse in municipalities of the state of Goiás, Brazil. Forty male horses were evaluated using the age of five years as a criterion. Sixteen linear measurements and 13 zootechnical indices were obtained. Subsequently, the mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, and covariances of these measures and indices were obtained using the software IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows. The measures withers height (WH), croup height (CH), midback height (MH), sternum-to-ground height (SH), chest index (CI), and estimated weight (W) allowed characterizing Curraleiro horses as small-sized, light, and fast, with proportional measures. The dactyl-thoracic index (DTI), body index (BI), conformation index (CFI), load index 1 and 2 (LOI1 and LOI2), and compactness index 1 and 2 (COI1 and COI2) showed that the Curraleiro horse has an intermediate capacity for speed and strength, bearing considerable weight on the back, with saddling aptitude and fast work. These results represent the beginning of the formation of a database that may contribute to future studies and the conservation of the Curraleiro horse in the state of Goiás. O objetivo deste trabalho foi a realização da caracterização morfológica de espécimes remanescentes do cavalo Curraleiro em municípios do estado de Goiás, Brasil. Foram avaliados 40 cavalos machos, tendo como critério a idade a partir de cinco anos, dos quais se obteve 16 medidas lineares e 13 índices zootécnicos. Posteriormente, a média, o desvio padrão, o mínimo, o máximo e as covariâncias dessas medidas e índices foram obtidos por meio da utilização do software IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows. As medidas altura da cernelha (AC), altura da garupa (AG), altura do costado (ACost), vazio subesternal (VAZ), índice peitoral (IP) e peso estimado (P) permitiram caracterizar os cavalos Curraleiros como um grupo de pequeno porte, leve, veloz e com medidas proporcionais. Os índices dáctilo-torácico (IDT), corporal (IC), de conformação (ICF), de carga 1 e 2 (ICG1 e ICG2) e de compacidade 1 e 2 (ICO1 e ICO2) demonstraram que o cavalo Curraleiro tem capacidade intermediária para velocidade e força, suportam considerável peso sobre o dorso, e possuem aptidão para sela e tração ligeira. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine whether the linear measures of the maxilla, mandible and cranial base were predictors of facial growth rotation in a Croatian population with Class III malocclusion by cephalometric radiographic methods. Material and methods: The examined sample consisted of pretreatment lateral cephalometric records of 201 (111 females and 90 males) untreated Class III patients of Caucasian Croatian ancestry from the Department of Orthodontics at Zagreb University. The measurements were divided into five categories for analysis: cranial base, skeletal maxillary and skeletal mandibular relationships, sagittal intermaxillary and vertical relationships. Five multiple linear regression models were used to identify predictors of facial rotation pattern. Results: The effective length of the mandible was the most important predictor of facial rotation pattern, with the increased length largerly predisposing the tendency to the vertical growth pattern. No significant dichotomy was found regarding gender apart from the fourth model in which the posterior rotation of maxilla is related to female gender. Conclusion: These predictors could help orthodontists determine timing and therapy for Croatian patients with Class III malocclusions., Svrha: Željelo se s pomoću rendgenkefalometrijske analize ustanoviti mogu li dužinske vrijednosti maksile, mandibule i kranijalne baze biti prediktori rotacijskog obrasca rasta lica na uzorku ispitanika hrvatske populacije s anomalijom skeletne klase III. Ispitanici i metode: Ispitivani uzorak sastojao se od 201 laterolateralne snimke glave (111 ženskih, 90 muških) učinjene prije početka ortodontske terapije, a dobivene su iz baze podataka pacijenata Zavoda za ortodonciju Stomatološke klinike Kliničkoga bolničkog centra Zagreb. Sva mjerenja klasificirana su u pet kategorija: kranijalna baza, skeletni maksilarni i skeletni mandibularni odnosi, međučeljusni sagitalni i vertikalni odnosi. Za procjenu rotacijskog obrasca rasta lica korišteno je pet modela multiple linearne regresije. Rezultati: Efektivna dužina mandibule bila je najznačajniji prediktor rotacijskog obrasca rasta lica pri čemu je povećana dužina u velikoj mjeri predisponirala tendenciju vertikalnom obrascu rasta. Nije pronađena značajna spolna dihotomija, osim u četvrtom modelu gdje je posteriorna rotacija maksile povezana sa ženskim spolom. RESUMOO objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar as características morfométricas de equinos utilizados no patrulhamento ostensivo pertencentes aos Esquadrões de Polícia Montada localizados nos municípios de Lages, Joinville e Florianópolis - SC. Foram utilizados 101 animais (78 machos castrados, um garanhão e 22 fêmeas), com idade média de 11,9 anos e massa corpórea de 490,82±53,51kg. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are reported from 15 individuals in an Arab-Israeli community who were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The quantitative parameters that were used for MRI analyses included gradings (0-3) and linear measurements of different brain structures. Generalized tissue loss was assessed by combined measurements of the ventricles (ventricular score, VS) and sulcal grading and width (SG, SW, respectively). Loss of brain tissue in specific regions of interest, eg, temporal lobes, basal ganglia, and midbrain, was evaluated by precise measurements. We observed abnormal tissue characteristics, expressed as high intensity foci in white matter on T2W sequences, as well as tissue loss, both generalized and focal. The relevance of the studied problem is caused by the fact that the identity of this or that nation is reflected first of all in its traditional culture which indissoluble areas are the calendar and the time account. Without studying this sphere of knowledge of national culture it is impossible to understand not only spiritual but also material, social life in the Turko-Tatar societies. The purpose of this article is the identification and the analysis of the facts of a calendar of the Turko-Tatars in close relationship with other areas of their spiritual culture. The leading method to the study of this problem is a complex method. The use of a complex method for us is not only a means of bringing in one research of diverse material as rather the principle of mutual validation and correlation of the facts and the objectivity of the conclusions. The main results of this article are detection of features and nature of the calendar of the Turko-Tatars, their role of public and spiritual life in interrelation with cultures of the Central Asian, the Muslim states. Com base nesses resultados, recomendam-se as seguintes caracter?sticas para serem mantidas em trabalhos futuros com esta base de dados: pontua??o da marcha, altura na garupa, comprimento do dorso, comprimento da garupa, largura da cabe?a e per?metro da canela. Records from 14,288 animals of the Mangalarga Marchador breed, born from 1990 to 2005, were used to discard morphofunctional traits in a principal component analysis. The following traits were used: height at withers, height at croup, lengths of head, neck, back, croup, hip length and body, widths of head, hip width, thorax perimeter, cannon bone circumference and gait score. For the traits considered it was observed that 7 principal components showed variation lower than 0.7; suggesting that seven variables could be discarded. The reason is that when variable are highly correlated with the principal components of smaller variance, their variation is practically insignificant. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, desenvolver uma equação confiável, que possibilite calcular a área foliar de forma rápida e não destrutiva, utilizando medidas lineares da folha, para as diferentes espécies de Passiflora (P. alata, P. coccinea, P. gibertii, P. ligularis, P. misera, P. mucronata, P. nitida, P. setacea). Foram coletadas trezentas folhas, de diferentes tamanhos, de cada espécie. Realizaram-se análises de regressão da área foliar versus comprimento da nervura principal, maior largura da folha e o produto destas. A área foliar foi medida com um dispositivo de medição automática e as medidas lineares foram determinadas utilizando-se régua. O modelo linear escolhido, para todas as espécies, foi o que utiliza o produto das variáveis independentes, por apresentar maior coeficiente de determinação (R²) e maior significância do coeficiente de regressão. Os modelos apresentaram coeficiente de determinação ajustado superior a 0,927 e índice de desempenho ótimo, segundo a classificação de Camargo e Sentelhas. No processo de validação do modelo, mostrou-se que a correlação da área foliar medida com a área foliar observada foi muito alta. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo demonstram que a área foliar das espécies de Passifloras podem ser preditas, usando-se as determinações do comprimento e da largura das folhas. The objective of the present study was to develop a reliable equation which enables a fast and non-destructive calculation of leaf area using linear leaf measures from different Passiflora species (P. alata, P. coccinea, P. gibertii, P. ligularis, P. misera, P. mucronata, P. nitida, P. setacea). Three hundred leaves with different sizes were collected from each species. It was performed the analysis of regression of leaf area versus lenght of the main vein, greatest leaf width and their product. Leaf area was measured with a device for automatic measurement and linear measures were determined using a ruler. The linear model chosen for all species, was the one which uses independent variables product because it presents the greatest coefficient of determination (R²) and significative coefficient of regression. The models showed adjusted coefficient of determination higher than 0.927 and optimal performance index, according to the classification of Camargo and Sentelhas. In the process of model validation, it was shown that the correlation between measured leaf area and observed leaf area was very high. Ontogenetic allometry is the study of how the size or shape of certain structures changes over the course of an animal’s development. In this study, using Huxley's formula of allometric growth (1932), we assessed the changes in the rate of growth of the feet size of the sigmodontine rodent Oligoryzomys flavescens during its ontogeny and compared differences between males and females. We find evidence of a change of polarity during the ontogenetic development of the species, with the presence of positive allometry during pregnancy and negative allometry in adulthood. Moreover, we note the presence of sexual dimorphism in the size of the feet, in which males of the species have a higher rate of growth than females. This growth pattern is positively related to escape from predators in childhood in both sexes and, in adulthood, provides a higher encounter rate of females by males, due to the larger displacement of the latter. We suggest that both the forces of natural selection and sexual selection have acted to shape the evolution of foot size in this species. A alometria ontogenética estuda como o tamanho ou forma de determinada estrutura muda ao longo do desenvolvimento. Neste estudo, através da fórmula do crescimento alométrico de Huxley (1932), acessamos as variações na taxa de crescimento do tamanho dos pés do roedor sigmodontineo Oligoryzomys flavescens, ao longo de sua ontogenia e entre machos e fêmeas. Nós encontramos evidência de uma mudança de polaridade ontogenética ao longo do desenvolvimento da espécie, com presença de alometria positiva na fase gestacional, e alometria negativa na fase adulta. Além disso, constatamos a presença de dimorfismo sexual no tamanho dos pés, onde machos da espécie apresentam uma maior taxa de crescimento nesta característica em comparação com as fêmeas. Esse padrão de crescimento deve estar positivamente relacionado com a fuga de predadores na infância em ambos os sexos, e na vida adulta propicia uma maior taxa de encontro de fêmeas pelos machos, devido ao maior deslocamento destes últimos. Sugerimos que tanto as forças da seleção natural quanto da seleção sexual tem atuado para moldar a evolução do tamanho dos pés nesta espécie. more...

Estimou-se o coeficiente de endogamia e avaliou-se seu efeito sobre características morfométricas dos animais em um criatório no norte de Minas Gerais. As características estudadas foram alturas da cernelha e da garupa, comprimentos da cabeça, do pescoço, do dorso-lombo, da garupa e do corpo, larguras do peito e da garupa. O arquivo continha 2186 informações de parentesco de animais do arquivo zootécnico da fazenda, desde o início da formação da raça, 1951, até o ano de 2006. Calculou-se o coeficiente de endogamia (F) e avaliou-se seu efeito por meio de regressão linear simples sobre as medidas morfométricas. Do total de animais, 27,6% mostraram-se endogâmicos, sendo o F médio da população igual a 1,4%. Considerando-se apenas os animais endogâmicos, a consanguinidade média atingiu 5,3%, mínimo de 0,1 e máximo de 28,1%. Não se verificaram efeitos negativos da endogamia sobre as características morfométricas, exceto para largura da garupa, em que se observou que para cada 10% de acréscimo de F houve aumento de 0,576cm na largura da garupa. Possivelmente, devido ao baixo valor encontrado, a endogamia não influenciou as demais características avaliadas. The coefficient of inbreeding was estimate and its effect on linear traits of the Mangalarga Marchador horses reared in a ranch in the North of Minas Gerais was evaluated. The characteristics studied were morphometric traits such as wither and hip height, length of head, neck, back-loin, hip and body, as well as chest and hip width. The archive had 2186 data on the genealogy of animals from the herd register of the Catuni Farm. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated and its effect was evaluated by means of simple linear regression on the linear traits. Of all animals, 27.6% showed inbreeding, with an F average of 1.4% in the population. Considering only the inbred animals, the average consanguinity reached 5.3% minimum of 0.1 and maximum of 28.1%. Negative effects of inbreeding on the morphometric traits were not seen, except for hip width, where for each 10% increase in F there was increase of 0.576cm. Foram estudados índices zootécnicos de 2.248 animais registrados na Associação Brasileira de Criadores do Cavalo Pantaneiro (ABCCP), no período compreendido entre 1972 e 2000. Os dados foram analisados usando o programa SAS e o DFREML para estimação de parâmetros genéticos. Na análise dos índices corporais, o índice dáctilo torácico (IDT) apresentou animais intermediários (nem leves e nem aptos para tração). O índice de BARON e CREVAT também confirmou este resultado. Na determinação do índice peitoral (IP), os animais foram considerados, em geral, favoráveis à velocidade por apresentarem membros longos. Já no índice corporal (IC), a maioria dos animais não foi apta à velocidade e nem à tração (mediolíneos). Através da análise dos índices de conformação verificou-se que, em geral, os Pantaneiros são mediolíneos, aptos para velocidade e possuem bom desenvolvimento torácico, proporcionando velocidade na lida do gado e resistência a longas caminhadas. Na análise dos fatores ambientais, verificou-se que nos últimos anos alguns índices têm sofrido alterações, provavelmente devido à seleção já exercida pelo criador, que pode afetar a capacidade de adaptação dos cavalos. Body index measurements on 2248 horses registered by the Brazilian Association of Pantaneiro Horse Breeders (ABCCP), in the period from 1972 to 2000 were analyzed. Data was analyzed using SAS and DFREML to calculate genetic parameters. The Dactyl Thoracic Index indicated that these animals are intermediary (not light horses but not suitable for traction), while the BARON and CREVAT index confirmed this result. The Chest Index presented animals that are good for speed as they have long legs but looking at the Body index the indication was that these horses are neither suitable for speed nor traction (intermediary). The analysis of other conformation indices indicated that, in general, these horses are medilines, show good speed and chest development, making them suitable for dealing with cattle and resistance for long treks. The environmental factor analysis verified that these horses have changed in recent years possibly due to selection by the breeder which may affect their adaptive capacity. more...

Foram utilizados dados de 498 cavalos registrados na Associação Brasileira dos Criadores de Cavalo Campeiro, entre 1985 e 1999. Foram incluídas informações individuais de 16 medidas lineares: alturas da cernelha (AC), do dorso (AD), da garupa (AG), dos costados (ACost) e do vazio subesternal (Vaz); comprimentos da cabeça (CC), do pescoço (CP), do dorso-lombar (CD), da garupa (CG), da espádua (CE) e do corpo (CCorp); larguras da cabeça (LC), do peito (LP) e da anca (LA); perímetros torácico (PT) e de canela (PC). Com os dados de registro, foram calculados o peso (P) e os índices: peitoral (IP), dáctilo-torácico (IDT), corporal (IC), torácico (IT), conformação (ICF), carga para trabalho a trote e a galope (ICG1), carga para trabalho a passo (ICG2), compacidade (ICO1 e ICO2) e relação corporal entre AC e AG (RCG). A análise de variância foi realizada considerando-se os efeitos fixos de mês (MRO) e ano de registro (AR), do sexo, da idade e da cor da pelagem. Os índices obtidos mostraram aptidão intermediária entre trabalho de sela e tração leve. O peso médio foi de 419,96 kg e o IC de 0,849, indicando ser animal mediolíneo, ideal para equitação. A partir do ICG1 e ICG2, estima-se que possa suportar, em média, peso de 117 kg, em trote ou a galope, e 199 kg, em caminhada rápida. Os coeficientes de variação apresentaram grande amplitude, predominando valores baixos. Sexo e cor da pelagem não foram causas importantes de variação nas medidas e nos índices. O MR influenciou CC, CP, CD, CE, LP, LA, PT, PC e a maior parte dos índices. O AR não influenciou AC, AD e ACost, CC, LP e PT, fazendo-o nas demais medidas lineares, mas, entre os índices, teve efeito importante apenas no IT. A idade dos animais influenciou ACost, CD, LC, LP, LA, PT e a maioria dos índices. A cor da pelagem em maior proporção na população foi castanha, seguida por baia e tordilha. Data was available on 498 horses registered by the Brazilian Association of Campeiro Horse Breeders. This included individual data on 16 linear traits [shoulder height (SH), mid back height (MBH), withers height (WH), back height (BH), head length (HL), neck length (NL), back length (BL), shoulder length (SL), hip length (HiL), body length (BOL), head width (HW), chest width (CW), hip width (HIW), chest circumference (CC), cannon bone circumference (CBC)], space under horse (SUH), coat color, temperament and nine subjective traits taken at registration. Body indices and weight were calculated from standard formulae where pectoral index (PI)= WH/SUH, dactyl-thoracic index (DTI), weight (BW), length index (LI), body index (BI), thorax index (TI), conformation index (CI), work index 1 (WI1) and work index 2 (WI2), compact index 1 (COI1) and compact index 2 (COI2). The effect of sex of animal, month, age and year of registration as well as coat color on the measurements was carried out using SAS® (Statistical Analysis System). The Campeiro horse is well proportioned with WH (1.46 m) slightly higher than SH. It is an animal that is between saddle and light traction, with a mean weight 419.96 kg, and medium length. WI1 and WI2 show that it can support 117.16 kg at a trot or gallop and a maximum weight of 198.76 kg at a fast walk. Variance coefficients varied widely but low measures predominated. Sex and coat color were not important sources of variation for measurements and indices. Month of registration influenced CC, CP, CD, CE, LP, LA, PT, PC and most indices. Year of registration did not influence AC, AD, ACost, CC, LP and PT, but was significant for the other linear measures and only for IT in the indices. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar as medidas morfométricas de potros e potras da raça Mangalarga Marchador utilizando a análise discriminante. As medidas corporais foram feitas na semana do nascimento dos potros, em 55 potros e 41 potras; aos seis meses de idade, em 35 potros e 37 potras; e aos doze meses de idade, em 19 potros e 31 potras. Foram efetuadas 25 mensurações lineares, envolvendo altura, comprimento, largura e perímetros além de 11 medidas angulares. A análise discriminante foi utilizada para verificar as diferenças morfológicas entre os animais em função do sexo e das idades dentro de cada sexo. As medidas de relevantes para evidenciar o dimorfismo sexual foram as seguintes: nos animais recém-nascidos, os perímetros do boleto e do joelho, os comprimentos do corpo e da cabeça, a altura na cernelha, a distância da soldra ao jarrete e o ângulo fêmur-tibial; aos seis meses de idade, os perímetros do joelho, do tórax e do boleto, o comprimento do pescoço e o ângulo escápulo-solo; aos doze meses de idade, os perímetros do joelho e do tórax, as alturas na cernelha e na garupa, e os ângulos úmero-radial e coxal-solo. Os machos foram, em geral, maiores que as fêmeas nas medidas lineares exceto o perímetro torácico, cujo valor médio foi maior nas potras. Os erros de classificação quanto à idade foram observados, principalmente, após os quatro meses de idade podendo indicar os efeitos ambientais no período pós-desmame. This work aims to evaluate the body measures of colts and fillies of Mangalarga Marchador breed using a discriminant analysis. Measures were performed at birth week, in 55 colts and 41 fillies; at six months age, in 35 colts and 37 fillies; and at twelve months age, in 19 colts and 31 fillies. There were made 25 linear measures, including height, length, width and girth, plus 11 angular measures. Discriminant analysis was used to verify morphologic differences between the animals, in function of sex and age within each sex. In newly born, fetlock and knee girths, body and head lengths, withers height, distance from stifle to hock and femur-tibial angle were the measures that has been differentiated sex. At six months of age, knee girth, thoracic girths and fetlock girth, neck length and shoulder-floor angle were measures that has been differentiated sex. At twelve months of age, knee and thoracic girths, withers and croup heights, humerus-radial and coxal-floor angles had evidenced sex dimorphism. The males were in general larger than females for linear measures, except for the thoracic girth, which was larger in the females. Objetivou-se, neste estudo, realizar avaliação morfológica de potros e potras da raça Mangalarga Marchador, adotando-se a análise fatorial, durante o período de agosto de 2000 a junho de 2003. Foram efetuadas 19 mensurações lineares, envolvendo altura, comprimento, largura e perímetros e 11 medidas angulares: na semana do nascimento, em 55 potros e 41 potras; aos seis meses de idade, em 35 potros e 37 potras; e aos doze meses de idade, em 19 potros e 31 potras. A análise fatorial foi empregada para verificar a existência de relações importantes entre as medidas morfométricas. Nas medidas lineares, geralmente foram observados de seis a sete fatores e as comunalidades obtidas com este número de fatores foram elevadas, ao passo que, nas medidas angulares, o número de fatores foi geralmente seis. Foram observadas correlações importantes entre as medidas lineares, as quais possibilitaram a identificação de fatores denominados sustentação, altura, rendimento, equilíbrio, carga, cefálico, robustez e perímetro, entre outros, enquanto, nas medidas angulares, foram identificados fatores que podem estar associados à comodidade, agilidade, rendimento, impulsão e força para o andamento. This work aims to evaluate the morphology of Mangalarga Marchador foals with Factorial Analysis from August, 2000 to June, 2003. Nineteen linear measures relating to height, length, width and girth and 11 angular measures were made at birth's week, in 55 colts and 41 fillies; at six months of age, in 35 colts and 37 fillies; and at twelve months of age, in 19 colts and 31 fillies. The factorial analysis was used to verify the existence of important relationships among morphometric measures. For linear measures, generally were observed six and seven factors and the communality obtained with this numbers of factors were high. However, for angular measures the number of factors was generally six. It was observed very important relationships among linear measures and it was possible to identify the factors as sustentation, height, efficiency, equilibrium, cargo, cephalic, robustness and girth among others, while for angular measures it was possible to identify factors associated with comfortableness, agility, efficiency, impulsion and force for gait. more...
