This essay considers what happens in the English classroom when teaching the same lesson to two classes considered to be of different levels of 'ability'. It explores what happens during a discussion about the fate of Eva Smith in An Inspector Calls when students' reading of a text diverges. I consider what teachers do when students' readings of a text goes against our expectations and accepted critical norms of both the teacher and the National Curriculum. Introduction: Undergraduate nursing students often work part-time or even full-time while studying at university completing their bachelor's degrees. The aim of this study is to explain the meaning of the lived experiences of nursing students working as students in clinical field. Methods: A phenomenological study was conducted at the nursing and midwifery school of Tabriz, Iran. Purposefully, 20 baccalaureate nursing students with experience working as student worker nurses were recruited. The sample size was determined according to data saturation. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were held with the participants over 3 months (April 2020 to June 2020), and Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to analyze the data. Results: Five main themes extracted from the data analysis, including "students' clinical competency", "nurse-student relationships", "shift work", "mislearning", and "chaotic wards". A further 12 sub-themes extracted under the five main themes. Conclusion: The work of nursing students in clinical environments as student worker nurses is a two-dimensional phenomenon with advantages and disadvantages. The benefits are improving the nursing students' clinical and communication skills, increasing their self-confidence, learning and practicing discipline and nursing responsibilities, and the disadvantages are facing reality shock stress, and mislearning. Objectives. The two main stressors affecting athletes’ wellbeing are relationships between coaches and athletes and social support. This study aims to investigate the connections between athletes’ psychological health, social support, and coach-athlete interactions. Relationships between coaches and athletes have a favorable impact on future coaching techniques and support systems, which in turn improves athlete wellbeing. Materials and methods. This study employed a quantitative approach using survey methods. The study involved 323 respondents consisting of 231 males (71.52%) and 92 females (28.48%). The instrument used in this study was the Instructor–Student Rapport Scale, comprising 2 dimensions (pleasant interactions and personal relationships). The study results were analyzed using the t-test to determine the significance of differences in athletes’ life experiences based on their relationship with the coach. The findings of the study explain that the experiences of athletes’ gender have differences regarding the relationship with the coach. Results. This result has also been proven by the results of the t test calculation of 0.001, which states that there is no difference in life experience between athletes and coaches. Conclusions. These findings lead to the conclusion that the most crucial factor in facilitating and enabling meaningful life experiences between coaches and athletes is the coach’s proximity to the athletes.

Objectives: Recovery from drug addiction often poses challenges for the recovering person. The coping mechanisms employed by these individuals to resist temptations and manage stress play a key role in the healing process. This study was conducted to explore the coping strategies or techniques that individuals with addiction use to handle stress and temptation while undergoing treatment. Methods: A qualitative meta-synthesis approach was utilized to critically evaluate relevant qualitative research. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines were used for article selection, with these standards applied to 4 academic databases: Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, and CINAHL. The present review included studies published between 2014 and 2023, selected based on pre-established inclusion criteria. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Qualitative Studies Checklist. This review was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under the registration number CRD42024497789. Results: The analysis of 13 qualifying qualitative articles revealed 5 major themes illustrating the coping mechanisms employed in the pursuit of recovery by individuals who use drugs. These themes include seeking social support, as well as psychological coping strategies, spiritual experiences, professional interventions, and the enhancement of awareness. Conclusions: Among individuals with drug addiction, coping mechanisms are crucial for resisting stress and temptations throughout the recovery process. Healthcare professionals, as medical specialists, can establish more thorough and effective plans to support these patients on their path to recovery.

Abstract Introduction Almost one third of people affected by leprosy in Colombia suffer from disability, which often results from delayed diagnosis and treatment. We aimed to explore the experience of people affected by leprosy during the process of diagnosis and treatment and if and how this experience was influenced by peers. Methods A qualitative study using body map stories was conducted from October 2019 to February 2020 in Colombia. Adult people affected by leprosy were recruited through patient associations in different cities. We conducted three sessions with an average duration of 2–3 h per participant, during which the participants created a painted map of their body and chose symbols to represent their experience, while being engaged in an informal interview. The sessions were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically by an interdisciplinary team, consisting of physicians, social workers and a person affected by leprosy. Results The 17 study participants (11 female) were aged 20 to 70 years. Leprosy-related manifestations ranged from no to advanced disability. Some participants were active members of associations for people affected by leprosy. Three main themes were identified during analysis: (1) A long pathway to diagnosis, (2) Therapy as a double-edged sword and (3) The influence of other people affected by leprosy. The participants described an often years-long process until being diagnosed, which was marked by insecurities, repeated misdiagnosis, and worsening mental and physical health. Delayed diagnosis was related to late health care seeking, but also to inadequate health communication, lack of leprosy-related knowledge and negligence among health care workers. A high desire to cure motivated the participants to take their medication rigorously, despite the high treatment burden. Support from peers, either within the own social environment or provided from associations, contributed to a faster diagnosis and increased therapy adherence. Peers helped to recognize the symptoms, urged patients to seek care, recommended physicians with leprosy-related knowledge and provided a realistic example of both disease severity and curability. Conclusion People affected by leprosy experience a significant burden during the process of diagnosis and treatment. Involving well-trained peers could foster early diagnosis, treatment compliance and prevention of disability.

Time-related ageing of the organism brings about the limitations to all human beings. The ageing process pertains to all organs and neither does it spare the brain, although, apart from neurodegenerative diseases, the changes in brain’s functions seem to be less detectable. Many studies that were conducted for years in ageing adults provide evidence that lifestyle in which psychic and physical activity is maintained significantly and positively affects brain plasticity, i.e., normal ability to learn and develop, and therefore this lifestyle serves as a protective agent for cognitive functions even in the case of degenerative changes of brain tissue. Introduction: Increased smartphone accessibility has enhanced the speed and diversity of the dissemination of data, ideas, and thoughts. Notably, patients often turn to social media platforms to gather information on treatment options, share personal experiences, offer opinions, and choose the best health-care providers. Social media has been employed to distribute health information. Aims: This study aimed to analyze the content regarding orthodontic functional appliances posted on various social media platforms. Materials and Methods: The study analyzed content posted in August 2020 on four social media sites, namely, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit, focusing on terms related to orthodontic functional appliances. Data from the first 100 posts per keyword were collected and then recorded and coded in spreadsheets. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed to elucidate the nature of the posted content. Results and Discussion: A total of 1204 posts were included in the study. Of these, 29.8.2% were photos and 51.8% were videos. Majority of the posts (65.3%) were about information sharing and uploaded by doctors (51.2%). The type of malocclusion was described as Class II in 18.4% of the posts but not specified in 72.8%. The overall usefulness of the posts was low. Posts of photos, posts on Instagram, and posts by doctors were found to be more significantly useful (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Patients, doctors, and academics extensively use social media platforms to disseminate orthodontic information. However, more useful posts on orthodontic functional appliances should be uploaded, including those on treatment effectiveness, patient experience, and patient–clinician relationships, which have been widely disregarded.

I completed a surgical elective with the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), China. I was taught a great deal of surgical knowledge by the team and was inspired as I witnessed the life-changing operations they performed. The experience was professionally and culturally enriching and has cemented my desire to pursue surgery as a career to improve the lives of my future patients. In this article, I will discuss how I secured this elective and my personal experience during the elective. Additionally, I will briefly discuss some differences I observed between the healthcare systems in Hong Kong and Ireland, including different scopes of surgical practice, residency training, and also the similar challenges faced by both public healthcare systems.

Abstract This study examines the state of migrants’ cultural adaptation in Malaysia, and how such an adaptation can help build our understanding of migrants’ life and employment experiences in the country. In doing so, this study has adopted a quantitative approach, with a completed survey towards 410 migrant respondents, living and working temporarily in Selangor, Malaysia. A multiple regression analysis finds that the three most significant predictors contributing to the respondents’ cultural adaptation are “positive experiences” (β = .677, p = .000), “closeness” (β = − .107, p = .008), and “social relationships” (β = .095, p = .032). While “positive experiences” and “social relationships” influence the migrant workers’ adaptation positively, the “closeness” predictor on the contrary (negative). Another predictor, “disconnection”, is found to be not statistically significant. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) reveals significant differences in the respondents’ cultural adaptation based on such demographic characteristics as age, gender, level of education, nationality, length of employment, and sector of employment. For instance, female migrants are strongly associated with a higher level of “positive experiences” [F(1, 408) = 6.321, p = .013] and “social relationships” [F(1, 408) = 5.634, p = .018], while male migrants tend to rely on cultural proximity (i.e., “closeness”) [F(1, 408) = 6.828, p = .009]. The discussion section highlights attributes such as the gender factor in cultural adaptation, preservation of cultural identities, and creation of migrants’ symbolic places to understand how cultural adaptation intersects with the migrant workers’ daily lives and experiences. This study concludes that as Malaysia’s economy continues to rely on migrant workers, it needs to better understand the workers’ cultural adaptation and their far-reaching impact on their life experiences and employment conditions in the country.

Due to the enforcement of the one-child policy, customary adoption was revised in rural China as a family strategy to resist state policies. Through the birth control campaign, peasant couples would temporarily give up their out-of-plan or unwanted children to the care of relatives or friends. Most existing studies on this phenomenon look at China's population policies, but few studies pay attention to the families and individuals involved. Based on empirical data obtained from interviews and fieldwork conducted in Jiangli County, northern China, this article examines the subject of 'hidden children' in customary adoption at different levels. The identity of hidden children was created under various institutional and cultural forces and these hidden children live a life marred by discrimination, ambivalence, and other unique experiences. Although confronted by structural constraints from institutions and cultural norms, I argue that individuals actively adopt strategies to cope with these constraints rather than passively accept them. Thus, by exerting their agency, individuals continue to reshape and renegotiate their identities and life experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Parental involvement in the decision-making processes about medical treatment for children with life-limiting conditions is recognised as good practice. Previous research highlighted factors affecting the decision-making process, but little is known about how parents experience their participation. Aim: To explore how parents experience their participation in the process of decision-making about treatment and future care for their children with life-limiting conditions. Design: A systematically constructed review using narrative synthesis. The PRISMA guidelines were followed to report the findings. Databases Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched up to December 2023. The study protocol was registered at PROSPERO (RN CRD42021215863). Results: From the initial 2512 citations identified, 28 papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. A wide range of medical decisions was identified; stopping general or life-sustaining treatment was most frequent. Narrative synthesis revealed six themes: (1) Temporal aspects affecting the experience with decision-making; (2) Losing control of the situation; (3) Transferring the power to decide to doctors; (4) To be a 'good' parent and protect the child; (5) The emotional state of parents and (6) Sources of support to alleviate the parental experience. Conclusions: Parental experiences with decision-making are complex and multifactorial. Parents' ability to effectively participate in the process is limited, as they are not empowered to do so and the circumstances in which the decisions are taking place are challenging. Aim: To explore the life experiences of women with interstitial cystitis. Design: A qualitative phenomenological study. Methods: Fifteen women with interstitial cystitis were recruited from a regional hospital in Taiwan using purposive sampling. Data were collected via one‐on‐one semistructured interviews and analysed using the Colaizzi's method. Rigorous testing was conducted to identify the themes and subthemes. Results: Four major themes were identified: torment, restriction, acceptance and empowerment. These themes reflect the life experiences of women with interstitial cystitis. They endured unrelenting physical and psychological distress and loneliness, experienced obstacles and limitations in daily living because of their symptoms, accepted reality and considered their symptoms as a part of everyday life and developed coping skills for the disease. Conclusion: Medical care, psychological support and emotional venting are crucial for women with interstitial cystitis. Despite living a life full of frustrations and suffering caused by the unpredictable and unrelenting nature of interstitial cystitis, through external support and intrinsic positive cognitive reconstruction, women with interstitial cystitis gradually accepted that they were ill. They adapted to their situation, developed a suitable lifestyle and pace and ultimately achieved stable coexistence with the disease. Implications for the Profession and Patient Care: Although women with interstitial cystitis are affected by an incurable disease, through adequate assistance and reconstruction of perception, they can develop coping skills and stably coexist with their disease. There is a delicate dynamic balance between their lives and disease. Impact: This study may help clinicians to understand patients' life experiences and provide suitable care. This may improve the quality of care provided to women with interstitial cystitis and help them adapt to their disease, thereby improving their life satisfaction. The aim of the research was to portray the life experiences of adolescents using psychoactive substances with regard to their substance use. This study was carried out in a descriptive phenomenological design, which is a qualitative research method. A purposeful sampling method, was used. The sample consisted of 15 adolescents who were treated for a history of substance use. The data were collected by the face-to-face individual interview method. A personal information form and a semi-structured interview form were used to collect data. The content analysis approach proposed by Graneheim and Lundman was used in the analysis of the data. Data were analyzed using the N-VIVO-10 Pro-package program. Four main themes and thirteen sub-themes were determined: experiences before substance use (sub-themes: life before substance use, predisposing factors for substance use), experiences during substance use (sub-themes: symptoms of addiction, problems caused by substance use, family attitude to substance use, the meaning attached to substances) and experiences of the treatment process (sub-themes: motivation, difficulties experienced during treatment, the need for support, treatment results), prevention recommendations (sub-themes: for peers, for families, for society). Many individual, family and social risk factors had an effect on the adolescents starting to use the substances. They were exposed to negative physical, mental, economic, social and life experiences. Nurses working with adolescents who use substances can implement nursing interventions such as prevention activities, counselling, health education, coping and strengthening self-esteem in individual and school based interventions. • Psychoactive substance use negatively affects adolescents' lives in many ways. • Adolescents using psychoactive substances have suggested to their peers, families and society on the prevention • Nurses working with adolescents may plan nursing interventions by taking into account adolescents suggestions. The diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta affects the whole lives of family members. This study aims to investigate the lived experience of families with children diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta. This study used a qualitative, phenomenological design. The study sample consisted of parents of the children who were followed up with the diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta in the pediatric endocrinology clinic in Turkey. In order to collect data, a semi-structured interview form was prepared, and data were collected by way of face-to-face interviews. The lived experience of families were analyzed using qualitative methods. The life experiences of the families were analyzed in depth using qualitative methods. In the study, six themes were identified, including having a child diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta, family process, life patterns, emotional dimension, social life, and economic dimension. The results revealed that parents did not know about the disease upon learning of the child's diagnosis. Parents stated that they experienced anxiety, disappointment, sadness, denial, and despair when they first learned about their children's diagnosis. They also indicated that having a child with osteogenesis imperfecta affected the whole family in physiological, psychological, and social aspects. Parents and children should be given information about the disease since the first diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta, and psychosocial support should be provided. Families that can not get sufficient psychosocial support experience difficulties in the medical and care management of the disease. Knowing and understanding the lived experiences of families living with osteogenesis imperfecta can guide the planning and implementation of quality nursing care processes. • The diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta affects the lives of whole family and causes them to experience severe stress and fear, get angry and feel guilty. • Parents can experience feelings of anxiety, disappointment, sadness, denial, and despair because of the diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta. • Pediatric nurses should have knowledge and counseling skills for osteogenesis imperfecta, variable condition with unpredictable progress. Methods: The purposive sample of the research, in which a descriptive phenomenological design was used, consisted of 15 women. The data were evaluated according to Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis steps. Results: The views of the participants were classified into 7 themes: loss and grief, physical difficulties, socioeconomic difficulties, psychological difficulties, relational changes, strengths, and benefits. Conclusion: It was determined that women whose husbands had been receiving ADT experienced grief responses and physical, socioeconomic, and psychological difficulties. Psychological difficulties were found to include care burden, hospital stress, sexuality, and burnout. It was observed that the patients and their spouses experienced some positive and negative relational changes. Satisfaction with health services and resilience were facilitating factors for female spouses to adapt to the treatment process. It was determined that during the adaptation to the disease and treatment process, the participants had some needs such as family support, economic support, reduction of negative representations in the media, and enhancement of communication skills of health professionals. Moreover, they were found to have some benefits related to post-traumatic growth. Uro-oncology nurses can develop services intended to improve the well-being of the wives of men receiving ADT and use the knowledge and experience of uro-oncology nursing for the benefit of both patients and caregivers. Background: Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIED) are more and more widely used in the clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, CIED implantation may also result in a variety of physical, psychological, and social problems among patients. To help patients adapt to life after CIED implantation, it is important to know patients’ needs from their perspectives. Explore the needs of CIED patients from their perspectives to guide healthcare providers to improve their quality of life. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, the VIP database, the Wanfang database, and the China Biomedical Literature database were searched for qualitative studies on the experience of patients with CIED dating from January 2000 to August 2022. The quality of each article was evaluated according to the 2016 edition of the Joanna Briggs Institute Evidence-Based Health Care Center Qualitative Research Quality Evaluation Criteria and an integrative meta-synthesis was undertaken. Results: A total of 18 documents were included, and 111 categories were extracted. Analysis of the data resulted in the identification of 3 themes and 12 subthemes. The first theme, Equipment Symbiosis, included “Mixed feelings about the device as part of the body”, “Mixed feelings about the patient’s role”, and “Mixed feelings about an electrical stimulus”. The second theme, External Support, included “Husband and wife relationship damaged”, “Eager to participate, unwilling to be overprotected”, “Want to return to work but are forced to leave”, and “Information supply and demand mismatch”. The third theme, Self-coping, included “How to face a doctor”, “How to deal with activity restrictions”, “How to face yourself”, “How to face the future”, and “How to face death”. Conclusions: Healthcare providers need to accelerate technological innovation and clinical adoption of CIED. Additionally, healthcare providers need to establish a diverse support system led by medical staff, with family members, peers, and society working together, and improve CIEDs remote monitoring to help patients improve their quality of life. This research aims to explore the construction of teacher identity through life experiences. Data were collected from observation, interviews, and document analysis. The subject of this study was TN (a pseudonym), who is a science teacher with an excellent academic background. The results of this research indicate that, from the perspective of discourse identity, TN is a teacher who emphasizes contextual learning and student-centered learning. Based on the perspective of nature identity, kinesthetic learning and her fondness for mathematics have had a major influence on her interest in physics. Meanwhile, from the perspective of affinity identity, family and role models greatly influence TN's beliefs about learning and her decision to have a career as a teacher. From the perspective of institutional identity, formal institutions have a negative impact on the construction of TN’s identities, while informal institutions such as organizations have a positive influence on TN's physics interests and rhetorical skills.

Abstract Aim To explore the experiences of healthcare workers (HCWs) following occupational exposure to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) during the early stage of the pandemic. Design A Husserl descriptive phenomenological study design was employed. Methods Convenient and snowball sampling was used. In‐depth semi‐structured telephone interviews were conducted from February to March 2020 with the frontline HCWs who were exposed to COVID‐19 during work. Data analysis was conducted following the 7‐step analysis method developed by Colaizzi. Results Fifteen HCWs participated in the study. Four themes were identified, including (1) traumatic experiences since the occupational exposure; (2) getting through the hard time; (3) struggling to return to work; (4) reflections on occupational exposures. Conclusion The HCWs had traumatic and painful experiences after the occupational exposure. But they returned to work with strong resilience, professional obligation and social support. Training and supervision, and adequate supply of personal protective equipment are suggested to prevent professional exposure. Social and organizational support should be provided for the exposed HCWs.

The article shows the controversiality of the concept of “scientific worldview.” It indicates its connection with the ideology of Marxism, which claimed to reflect the objective laws of social development. The idea is made that within the framework of this approach, the understanding of the worldview as a source of personal meanings gives way to its vision as a combination of principles of socially significant activity. This approach is opposed to the position of Russian philosophers who criticized the concept of a scientific worldview and pointed out that the source of personal meanings that make up the content of the worldview is the life experience of the subject, understood as irrational introduction to being. To express such an introduction to being, the concepts of “world sense” and “world consciousness” used by Berdyaev can be used. Conceptual, scientific worldview means the attitude to reality as something external, otherworldly, i. e. is the position of substance. Science, according to Berdyaev, is knowledge of necessity through adaptation to world given and knowledge of necessity. To fill the meaning of the inner life of a person, a specific being of a person plays a decisive role, which acts as a form of rooting in being as such. In other words, a person acquires the main meanings of his existence not on the basis of a worldview, the content of which is a generalized image of the outside world, they are acquired from his own experience of spiritual growth, which constitutes the essential basis of life.

The qualitative mixed method designs research aims are as follows: (1) to narrate the life experience of sexual harassment on online social media from six sexual harassers experience by transcendental phenomenology based on the four steps of research process developed by Clark Moustakas. The study found that the meaning and essence of the life experience of sexual harassment on online social media are an experience that the harasser feels safe to sexual harassment. The harasser allows emotion over reasoning and reification of victims and lack of sympathy without thinking about the consequences. The harasser selection victim by know information about and the identity of victim. The victims are emotionally involved in a positive or negative relationship with their harasser, such as being intimate, offensive, irritated or angry. The harasser is self-centered and the harassment serves their own needs. The harasser lacks conscience when they harass their victim whether or not the harassment will affect the victim. The researcher used the results to answer research objectives: (2) to create prevention guidelines for sexual harassment on online social media from seven sexual harassment specialists by thematic analysis. The research results lead to presenting the sexual harassment prevention guidelines: public relations for modus operandi; enforcing the law; creating awareness of the possibility of being prosecuted; and cultivating morals and ethics. We examine whether bereavement affects managerial investment decisions in large organizations using the exogenous events of managers' family deaths. We find evidence that bereaved managers take less risk in separate samples of mutual funds and publicly traded firms. Mutual funds managed by bereaved managers exhibit smaller tracking errors, lower active share measures, and higher portfolio weights on larger stocks after bereavement events. Firms managed by bereaved CEOs exhibit lower capital expenditures and fewer acquisitions after bereavement events. Further analyses support the emotion-driven explanation over other explanations. The risk shifting by bereaved managers has negative implications on the performance of funds and firms that they manage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aim: The emergence and continuity of Corona has forced universities and higher education centers to change their educational strategy to take appropriate and consistent action to improve their educational programs. Due to the importance of e-learning and e-learning in response to these conditions, the present study investigated the experience of students of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences from e-learning in the Covid-19 crisis condition. Materials and Methods: This was a qualitative research with an interpretive phenomenological approach. The purposeful sampling method was used. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. After the thirteenth interview, the theoretical saturation of the data was achieved and the interview process with the sixteenth person was completed. In order to analyze the text of the interviews, the Colaizzi method was used. Results: From the analysis of the obtained data, three main themes: “Communication and interaction” with five sub-themes (lack of proper interaction between student/professor and student/student, lack of motivation, security and mental health, knowledge sharing and efficiency atmosphere in time and cost), “Management of time and learning style” with six sub-themes (low quality of teaching, stress, access and provision of resources, exam health, gaining experience and skills and opportunity to learn again and innovation in education) and “Infrastructure and technical facilities” were extracted with three sub-themes (weak support, ignoring educational equality and promoting media literacy). Weak interaction between professor and student, increasing level of anxiety and individual responsibility to achieve success in learning and weak technical and management infrastructure were the main challenges obtained from these three themes. Providing a platform for research, self-regulation and self-management in learning, increasing the knowledge and skills of information and communication technology are among the opportunities that are included in these themes. Conclusion: The results of the current research require attention to the approach of interaction and communication between the learner and the learner, to review the methods of teaching and skill-learning, to improve the quality of electronic learning and to prepare suitable infrastructures for optimal use of electronic learning.

In Australia, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) seeks to ensure that disabled people can access the support they need to live an independent life. There is limited knowledge around the NDIS client experience of signing deaf people—people who use Auslan as their primary language. This article reports on a pilot study that explored signing deaf people's experiences when accessing the NDIS to obtain a service package. Signing deaf people were invited to join a focus group and share their experiences. While all participants indicated that their initial contact with the NDIS and its provision of essential information through Auslan was adequate, they believed that access was difficult when they needed more detail. Also, all participants noted that NDIS staff members' knowledge of signing deaf people's life experience was an area for development. Overall, signing deaf people's consumer experience of the NDIS did not appear to meet their expectations. In Australia, signing deaf people can choose to be part of the new support system for disabled people - the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Signing deaf people in this study liked the way the NDIS gave them information through their sign language, Auslan, however, when they wanted to get more detailed information - they could not find it. NDIS staff could develop their knowledge of signing deaf people's life experience. Better staff knowledge can improve signing deaf people's NDIS experience. The search for the existence and nonexistence of bilingual advantages and disadvantages has become a battleground marked by polarized comments and perspectives, furthering our understanding of neither bilingualism as an experience nor cognition as higher-level mental processes. In this paper, I provide a brief historical overview of research examining the cognitive and linguistic consequences of multilingualism and address the assumptions underlying research exploring the bilingual behavioral difference. I aim to illustrate the sole focus on behavioral (dis)advantage fails to reflect the complexity and dynamicity of people's bilingual experiences, thereby distracting from understanding bilingualism. Responding to the call of this special issue, I describe the necessity to focus on people when moving toward a just and equitable future for applied psycholinguistic research. Furthermore, I explain why the nuances of bilingualism need to be recognized beyond binary categorization to advance knowledge about bilingualism and its consequences. To avoid unjust misattribution of a behavioral outcome to people's life experience and to report research findings in a transparent manner, the myopic representation of the terms "bilingual (dis)advantage" should be recognized and reflected on. In the literature about learning in general and also with regard to faith learning, the experience and practice of friendship has been neglected. In the early years of the church, and at various other times, social networks of Christians preserved and handed on the life of faith without the benefit of formal educational institutions or strong ecclesial structures. This article explores the potential of friendship to contribute to the kind of spiritual learning that underpins synodality. The experience of friendship plays an important role in how people access, interpret, welcome and embrace truth and in their paths towards transformation. Friendship is considered here as a form of peer ministry. There can be no social friendship, along the lines advocated by Pope Francis in Fratelli tutti, without the laboratory and engine room of everyday personal friendships. Habitus is a concept from Bourdieu's theories that plays a key role in explaining individuals' behaviours. The social reputation and recognition of vocational education in modern China are declining, and vocational college students are bearing a negative stigma, although they have a positive learning behaviour toward academic education. The aim of this study was to examine those students' previous life experiences, especially in the education field. The main research questions are as follows: (1) How does the individual's experience construct his or her learning habitus? (2) How does their learning habitus change their learning behaviours? The findings show that the interaction between participants and their parents and teachers mainly leads to the construction of learning habitus, that is, to pursue the success of academic education. Even though they originate from the working class, with less cultural capital and poor academic performance, this does not mean that they have negative learning behaviours. Background: The purpose of this study is to provide a phenomenological study of suicide attempts in men dealing with substance use. Methods: This is a qualitative study with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The participants of this study were 12 men who had a history of substance use and suicide attempts. The participants were chosen through an objective sampling method to participate in semi-structured interviews. The collected data were analyzed by the seven-stage Diekelmann et al. (1989) analysis method. Results: The participants' experiences were analyzed on two separate themes. The first theme was "inefficient personality traits," having the two sub-themes of "impulsive behavior" and "emotional instability." The second theme was "the stigma related to addiction." Furthermore, this study resulted in a constitutive pattern known as crippled with remorse and judgment of others. Conclusions: Inefficient personality traits and the stigma related to addiction drive men with substance use to suicide attempts, and they are prone to commit suicide again if these conditions continue to prevail. Mental health consultants and psychiatrists can take effective measures to reduce and prevent suicide attempts if they consider this study's findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Laryngectomy is a pivotal event in patients. lives, with pervasive and far‐reaching effects. Understanding gender differences in these effects may improve care of laryngectomy patients. This paper describes gender differences in the experience after laryngectomy. Aim: To explore the similarities and differences in the laryngectomee experience based on gender. Methods & Procedures: Four gender‐matched focus groups were conducted; dialogue was audio recorded, transcribed and studied using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Outcomes & Results: A total of 17 laryngectomees, eight female and nine male, age range 41–80 years, participated in focus groups. Laryngectomy represented a turning point in the lives of both genders. Four themes emerged: perception of loss, adjusting to alaryngeal communication, finding a positive outlook and re‐establishing the self. Themes applied to both genders, with subthemes demonstrating similarities and differences between men and women. Conclusions & Implications: Men and women experienced destabilization after laryngectomy related to perceived losses and shifts in identity. Men described navigating from physical disability toward recovery of function, while women described an emotional journey concerning loss and rediscovery of meaning in their lives. Understanding the laryngectomee experience in better detail, which includes recognizing gender differences and rejecting a one‐size‐fits‐all approach, may facilitate more effective preoperative counselling and post‐operative support from providers. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: Patients who undergo total laryngectomy often struggle with problems with physical, emotional, and social functioning and decreased quality of life. As the literature currently stands, the understanding of the experience of laryngectomees has primarily focused on the perspective of a singular gender. Thus, this is the first qualitative study specifically investigating differences in the laryngectomee experience between men and women. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: This study finds that women and men both endorse significant mental and physical changes following laryngectomy; however, their perception of their experience differed by gender. Women endorsed alteration to meaningful life and men demonstrated distress related to loss of physical functioning; both genders described laryngectomy as a formative event that helped them rediscover joy and redefine themselves for the better. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: Our findings suggest men and women have distinct mental and emotional struggles after laryngectomy despite similar physical changes. This suggests that tailoring care with consideration of these gender differences, including preoperative counselling, post‐operative support and gender‐matched visitors or support groups, may help beneficial in recovery after laryngectomy. This study examines the effect of investor birth cohorts on speculative investment preferences. Using retail trading and portfolio data from Finland over two decades, we find that individuals who have experienced desirable macro‐economic and social conditions during adolescence, such as high gross domestic product (GDP) growth and low divorce rates, are more likely to invest in speculative stocks. A positive relation is found between the proportion of speculative‐prone cohorts in the stock market and returns of stocks of lottery nature. We provide new evidence on the adverse effect of speculative investments, finding that cohorts with higher speculative investment weights on their portfolios achieve lower absolute and risk‐adjusted returns. We also provide support for earlier research that identifies a positive association between recent portfolio performance and the propensity to invest in speculative stocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a discussion concerning the impact of village governance quality on farmers' life experience satisfaction using a multiple linear regression model. Accordingly, there is an analysis regarding the heterogeneity of the impact of village governance quality on farmers' life experience satisfaction from the perspective of income differentiation and career differentiation. The results show the following: (1) The improvement of village governance quality is conducive to improving the satisfaction of farmers' life experiences. Among them, the living and social conditions have the greatest impact, followed by village cohesion, and then village inclusiveness. (2) From the perspective of income differentiation, the quality of village governance plays the largest role in promoting the life experience satisfaction of middle-income farmers, followed by low-income farmers, and then high-income farmers. (3) From the perspective of occupational differentiation, the quality of village governance has the largest role in promoting the satisfaction of part-time farmers' life experiences, followed by full-time farmers, and then non-agricultural farmers. Based on the research conclusion, it is suggested that strengthening the quality of village governance and paying attention to the differentiation of the farmers' economy and occupation will improve the satisfaction of farmers' life experiences.
