The main objective of the article is to substantiate the generations' method for political analysis. In this sense, the article clarifies the conceptual and theoretical framework of this approach; shows an example of research applied to the study of political leadership, and exposes empirical data and ideas that support the usefulness of the generational view. The writing has five sections. The introduction investigates the meanings of the word "generation", focusing on the examination of the meaning linked to the sociopolitical arena. The second section describes the foundations of the theory of generations and proposes a qualitative methodology for the generational analysis of the political field. The third section presents a study on the generations of the presidents of the Government of Spain, between 1977 and 2023, showing a proposal for a generational classification of such presidents. The fourth section exposes an analysis of the generational relationships between the presidents, and between them and their respective government teams. The analysis highlights the relevance of second generation of presidents (González and Aznar) in which a generational habitus appears that tends towards the professionalization of politics in the following generations. Finally, the conclusions emphasize the advantages of the generational method to make contextualized studies of sociopolitical phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
