Abstract

Whilst the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has spent just over a decade pushing experimental boundaries in energy and intensity of proton-proton collisions, it has yet to discover new physics beyond the Standard Model. The Standard Model remains one of the most robustly tested theories of all time, despite evidence that it is incomplete, such as its inability to account for dark matter or the weakness of gravity. It is thus highly motivated that new particles should appear in proton-proton collisions at the ATLAS detector, around the TeV scale. This thesis contains three searches for such new particles which represent substantial improvements to constraints on possible new physics beyond the Standard Model. They demonstrate that data remains consistent with the Standard Model in collision events with two leptons in the final state. The first two searches seek electroweak supersymmetry, using 80.5 fb−1 and the full 139.5 fb−1 of the ATLAS Run 2 dataset, respectively. The first search placed the first ATLAS Run 2 limits on chargino pair production decaying via W-bosons, excluding chargino masses up to 410 GeV for a massless neutralino. This was surpassed by the second search, resulting in world-leading exclusion limits on this process, up to 420 GeV, as well as excluding direct slepton production with slepton masses up to 700 GeV and chargino pair production decaying via sleptons or sneutrinos with chargino masses up to 1 TeV. The third search uses an innovative technique to pursue signs of lepton charge-flavour asymmetry in the full Run 2 ATLAS dataset. Whilst it can be shown that the ratio of e+μ− to e−μ+ events within Standard Model proton-proton collisions should not exceed one, this need not be the case for collision processes beyond the Standard Model. This search measures the ratio in data to be 0.988±0.005 and 0.987±0.005 in two regions of phase space (one with missing transverse momentum and one with a hard jet in the final state, respectively), as well as providing measurements binned in different variables. Furthermore, the search places the first direct exclusion limits at the LHC for single-production of a smuon within an R-parity violating supersymmetry model with the λ'231 coupling switched on, excluding left-handed smuons up to 1.2 TeV for neutralino masses below the top quark mass and λ'231 couplings up to one. It also interprets results in a scalar leptoquark model, placing the first LHC limits on a singly-produced leptoquark decaying to an eμ final state, excluding masses up to 2.2 TeV for leptoquark couplings λ(eu) and λ(μc) up to a value of one.

Abstract

A search for the K+→μ−νe+e+ decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10−11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Abstract

The Standard Model has granted exquisite power to predict the behaviour of high-energy particle collisions. It is not, however, without conceptual and empirical weaknesses. Several theories have been proposed which aim to resolve these difficulties. This thesis describes searches for two such theories: models of extra spatial dimensions, and supersymmetry. The Large Hadron Collider has extended the frontiers of energy and intensity in particle physics. In 2015, the LHC resumed proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. This increase over previous operation grants an enhancement in sensitivity to many processes beyond those of the Standard Model. Extra-dimensional theories address the hierarchical nature of the Standard Model. The lowered fundamental scale of gravity in these models allows a rich phenomenology at energies which may be accessible to the LHC. Some models predict the formation of microscopic black holes, which are the target of an analysis of collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015. No significant deviations from Standard Model predictions were observed. The constraints inferred on the parameters of the model are a significant advance on previous results. Lepton flavour is conserved in the Standard Model. This is not the result of a known fundamental symmetry, however. The latter part of this thesis proposes a search examining asymmetries of charge and flavour in the eμ final state. Models of supersymmetry with an R-parity-violating λ'₂₃₁ coupling are taken as motivation. The strategy is developed using collision data recorded by ATLAS in 2015 and 2016, and the most significant biasing effects are addressed.

4. Flavour studies with LHCb : b-meson mixing, lepton-flavour violation and the velo upgrade

Abstract

Semileptonic B decays of the type Bq⁰→Dq⁻μ⁺ν (where Dq⁻→K⁻K⁺pie⁻) are selected and their lifetimes are corrected using a statistical simulation-based correction called the k-factor. Using 1 fb⁻¹ of LHCb data the B⁰ and Bs⁰ mixing frequencies are measured to be Deltamd = ( 0.503 ± 0.011 (stat) ± 0.013 (syst) ) ps⁻¹ and Deltams = ( 17.93 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.15 (syst) ) ps⁻¹. We exclude the null hypothesis of no mixing for the B⁰ and Bs⁰ by 5.8 and 13.0 standard deviations respectively. This is the first observation of Bs Bsbar mixing using only semileptonic B decays. The lepton flavour violating decay D⁰→eμ is searched for, using tagged D⁰ decays from D*→D⁰pie, and the measurement is normalised using D⁰→K⁻pie⁺ decays. No evidence is seen of an excess over the expected background and so a limit is placed B(D⁰→eμ) < 1.3×10⁻⁸ at a 90% confidence level using 3 fb⁻¹ of LHCb data. This improves the previous measurement by a factor of 20 and is the world's best measurement. Possible upgrades to the LHCb VELO detector are simulated and aspects of the upgraded detector are optimised to ensure that all tracks within the angular acceptance can be detected with high precision. Finally the simulated performance of the current and upgraded VELO detectors are compared.

The MEG experiment represents the state of the art in the search for the Charged Lepton Flavour Violating μ+→ γ +e decay. With its first phase of operations at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), MEG set the most stringent upper limit on the BR( μ+→ γ +e ) < 4.2 x 10-13 at 90% confidence level, imposing one of the tightest constraints on models predicting LFV-enhancements through new physics beyond the Standard Model. An upgrade of the MEG experiment, MEG II, was designed and it is presently in the commissioning phase, aiming at a sensitivity level of 6 x 10-14The MEG II experiment relies on a series of upgrades, which include an improvement of the photon detector resolutions, brand new detectors on the positron side with better acceptance, efficiency and performances and new and optimized trigger and DAQ electronics to exploit a muon beam intensity twice as high as that of MEG (7 x 107 μ+/s). This paper presents a complete overview of the MEG II experimental apparatus and the current status of the detector commissioning in view of the physics data taking in the upcoming three years. 8. Radiation damage studies in the LHCb VELO detector and searches for lepton flavour and baryon number violating tau decays

Abstract

This thesis presents work carried out using data from the LHCb experiment during the first three years of data taking, 2010 - 2012. A study of the effects of radiation damage on the silicon sensors of the LHCb Vertex Locator is performed, with an emphasis on the implications for the long term performance of the detector. Following three years of operation the sensors have received a maximum delivered neutron equivalent fluence of approximately 1.6E12 per square centimeter, leading to a number of radiation induced effects. In particular the change in charge collection efficiency and signal/noise with fluence is compared to theoretical expectations, and the current trends are extrapolated to the fluences expected at the end of the LHCb detector lifetime. The development of an unexpected effect due to the structure of the routing lines in the sensors is described in detail. Searches for lepton flavour and baryon number violating decays of the tau lepton using the 2011 LHCb dataset are described. Observation of any lepton flavour or baryon number violation would be an unambiguous sign of new physics, whilst setting improved limits helps to constrain a number of Beyond the Standard Model theories. First LHCb limits are set on the branching fractions of the decays tau- to mu- mu+ mu-, tau- to anti-proton mu+ mu- and tau- to proton mu- mu-, with these results also representing the first limits on lepton flavour violating tau decays at a hadron collider. The limit on tau- to mu- mu+ mu- is expected to approach the world's best result from Belle in the coming years whilst the tau- to anti-proton mu+ mu- and tau- to proton mu- mu- results constitute the first limits on the branching fractions of these decays. The future prospects for these measurements with further data are briefly described.

Abstract

The type-III see-saw seems to explain the very minuteness of neutrino masses readily and naturally. The high-energy see-saw theories usually involve larger number of effective parameters than the physical and measurable parameters appearing in the low-energy neutrino phenomenology. Casas-Ibarra parametrisation facilitates to encode the information lost in integrating the heavy fermions out in an arbitrary complex orthogonal matrix. The CMS collaboration has already searched for triplet fermions in the type-III see-saw model with only one generation of triplet fermion flavour democratically decaying into SM leptons. We reinterpret this CMS search in the context of a realistic type-III see-saw model with two or three generations of triplet fermions, and endeavour to comprehend the implications of the foregoing matrix on the 95% CL lower limit on the mass of the triplet fermions. We also discuss the phenomenological implication of the aforesaid matrix in view of charged lepton flavour violating observables and displaced decays of the triplet fermions at colliders.

Abstract

Tensorial non-standard neutrino interactions are studied through a combined analysis of nuclear structure calculations and a sensitivity χ2-type of neutrino events expected to be measured at the COHERENT experiment, recently planned to operate at the Spallation Neutron Source (Oak Ridge). Potential sizeable predictions on transition neutrino magnetic moments and other electromagnetic parameters, such as neutrino milli-charges, are also addressed. The non-standard neutrino–nucleus processes, explored from nuclear physics perspectives within the context of quasi-particle random phase approximation, are exploited in order to estimate the expected number of events originating from vector and tensor exotic interactions for the case of reactor neutrinos, studied with TEXONO and GEMMA neutrino detectors.

Radiative neutrino mass models and the seesaw models are viewed from the unifying framework of standard model effective operators that explicitly violate lepton number by two units . After some comments on naturalness and leptogenesis in the minimal type 1 seesaw model, a full list of minimal renormalisable models that produce mass dimension-7, operators at low energies is presented. By way of example, phenomenological bounds from Run 1 LHC and lepton flavour violation data are then placed on one of these models. Abstract

We present the first direct search for lepton flavour violating muon decay mediated by a new light particle X, $$\upmu ^+ \rightarrow \mathrm {e}^+\mathrm {X}, \mathrm {X} \rightarrow \upgamma \upgamma \ $$ μ + → e + X , X → γ γ . This search uses a dataset resulting from $$7.5\times 10^{14}$$ 7.5 × 10 14 stopped muons collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009–2013. No significant excess is found in the mass region 20–45 MeV/c$$^2$$ 2 for lifetimes below 40 ps, and we set the most stringent branching ratio upper limits in the mass region of 20–40 MeV/c$$^2$$ 2 , down to $${\mathcal {O}}(10^{-11})$$ O ( 10 - 11 ) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Precision measures of electroweak and flavour observables, at both low and high energies, are highly complementary to direct searches for New Physics at high-energy colliders. Despite the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, and of the overwhelming successes of the Standard Model, several observational and theoretical problems remain to be addressed. In addition to neutrino oscillation phenomena, the Standard Model fails to explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, and does not offer a viable dark matter candidate. In recent years, numerous deviations between the Standard Model prediction and experimental measurements have been identified; interestingly, most are closely connected to lepton flavours.In this thesis we have explored several aspects of flavour physics, focusing on the phenomenological implications of models of massive neutrinos, and of several Standard Model extensions capable of accommodating current tensions on anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons and several B-meson decay observables.Following a brief introduction to the Standard Model and an overview of phenomenological aspects of flavour in the lepton sector, numerous phenomenological aspects of massive neutrinos (with particular attention to the interplay of leptonic CP violation and lepton flavour violation) are explored. The very appealing inverse seesaw mechanism (endowed with flavour and CP symmetries) is analysed, focusing on phenomenological consequences.The tensions in the anomalous magnetic moments of the electron and the muon are also investigated, especially in view of further peculiar excesses in nuclear transitions.Finally, B-meson decay anomalies, which have been the object of increasing attention, are considered, relying on model-independent analysis (using effective field theories) which pave the way to the phenomenological study of simplified leptoquark models., Les mesures de précision d’observables électrofaibles et de saveurs, à la fois à basse et à haute énergie, sont hautement complémentaires aux recherches directes de nouvelle physique au près des collisionneurs à haute énergie. Malgré la découverte du boson de Higgs au LHC, et les succès remarquables du Modèle Standard, il reste néanmoins quelques problèmes observationnels et théoriques à résoudre. Outre que le phénomène d'oscillation des neutrinos, le Modèle Standard ne parvient pas à expliquer l'asymétrie baryonique de l'Univers et n'offre pas de candidat viable au problème de la matière noire. Ces dernières années, de nombreuses déviations entre les prédictions du Modèle Standard et les mesures expérimentales ont été identifiées ; il est intéressant de remarquer que la plupart d’entre elles sont étroitement liées aux saveurs leptoniques.Dans cette thèse, nous avons exploré plusieurs aspects de la physique des saveurs (aussi bien leptonique qu’hadronique), en nous concentrant sur les implications phénoménologiques de modèles de neutrinos massifs, ainsi que sur certaines extensions du Modèle Standard capables d'accommoder les tensions actuelles en ce qui concerne les moments magnétiques anormaux des leptons chargés et aussi de plusieurs observables liées à la désintégration des mésons B.Après une brève introduction au Modèle Standard et un aperçu des aspects phénoménologiques de la saveur dans le secteur leptonique, de nombreux aspects phénoménologiques des neutrinos massifs (avec une attention particulière à l'interaction entre la violation de CP leptonique et la violation de la saveur leptonique) sont explorés. Une réalisation du mécanisme du « Inverse Seesaw », qui demeure une des possibilités les plus envisagées actuellement pour expliquer les masses et mélanges des neutrinos, est analysée, en particulier en ce qui concerne les conséquences phénoménologiques d’une telle réalisation dotée de symétries de saveur et de CP. Les tensions dans les moments magnétiques anormaux de l'électron et du muon sont également étudiées, notamment en vue d'autres excès observés dans des transitions nucléaires. Enfin, les anomalies dans les désintégrations des mésons B, qui font l'objet d'une attention croissante ces toutes dernières années, sont examinées, en s'appuyant sur une analyse indépendante du modèle (à l'aide des théories effectives), et qui ouvre la voie à l'étude phénoménologique de modèles simplifiés de leptoquarks.

Abstract

Searches for the lepton number violating $K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{-}\mu^{+}e^{+}$ decay and lepton flavour violating decays $K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{+}\mu^{-}e^{+}$ and $\pi^{0}\rightarrow\mu^{-}e^{+}$ are reported, using NA62 data collected in 2017 and 2018. In the absence of a significant excess above the background in each channel, upper limits on the branching ratios are established at $90\%$ confidence level: $\mathcal{B}(K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{-}\mu^{+}e^{+})

A first phase of the experiment using an existing beamline at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is designed to reach a single event sensitivity of 2���10$^{���15}$. We present an overview of all aspects of the technical design and expected performance of the phase I Mu3e detector. Abstract

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims at measuring the neutrinoless conversion of a negative muon into an electron and reach a single event sensitivity of 2.5 × 10 − 17 after three years of data taking. The monoenergetic electron produced in the final state, is detected by a high precision tracker and a crystal calorimeter, all embedded in a large superconducting solenoid (SD) surrounded by a cosmic ray veto system. The calorimeter is complementary to the tracker, allowing an independent trigger and powerful particle identification, while seeding the track reconstruction and contributing to remove background tracks mimicking the signal. In order to match these requirements, the calorimeter should have an energy resolution of O(5)% and a time resolution better than 500 ps at 100 MeV. The baseline solution is a calorimeter composed of two disks of BaF 2 crystals read by UV extended, solar blind, Avalanche Photodiode (APDs), which are under development from a JPL, Caltech, RMD consortium. In this paper, the calorimeter design, the R&D studies carried out so far and the status of engineering are described. A backup alternative setup consisting of a pure CsI crystal matrix read by UV extended Hamamatsu MPPC׳s is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The grand unification theories based on SO(10) gauge group have been at the centre of attraction to beyond Standard Model phenomenology. The SO(10) gauge symmetry may pass through several intermediate symmetries before breaking to Standard Model. Therefore some higher symmetries may occur at the experimentally reachable scales. This feature flourishes easily in non-supersymmetric models compared to supersymmetric ones. We find that certain breaking chains give tremendous predictions for the physics being explored at various particle physics experiments. Explanation to neutrino masses through TeV scale inverse see-saw is the driving theme of the models studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The COMET experiment at J-PARC aims to search for a lepton-flavour violating process of muon to electron conversion in a muonic atom, μ -e conversion, with a branching-ratio sensitivity better than 1 0 − 16 , 4 orders of magnitude better than the present limit, in order to explore the parameter region predicted by most well-motivated theoretical models beyond the Standard Model. The need for such an excellent sensitivity places several stringent requirements on the detector; (i) good momentum resolution, < 2 % , for 100 MeV/ c electron, which is primarily limited by multiple scattering effect for this momentum region; and (ii) high rate capability, up to 5 × 1 0 9 μ − /s muon beam enabled by J-PARC. In order to fulfil such requirements a vacuum-compatible, ultra-thin-wall straw tracker has been designed, and a 20 μ m -thick Mylar straw with 70 nm Al cathode has been developed employing an ultrasonic-welding technique. The detector performances such as detection efficiency and intrinsic spatial resolutions were investigated with test-beam experiments and confirmed to be acceptable for the COMET experiment. The construction of the straw tracker for COMET Phase-I has been completed. In parallel to the construction of present tracker a thinner 12 μ m -thick straw has been developed with joint collaboration among KEK, JINR and CERN. During this R&D, it was noticed that the current technology cannot achieve tubes much smaller than 5 mm in diameter or walls much thinner than 12 μ m. We also launched a brand-new project to realize the graphite-textile straw which has a potential to realize an extremely low material tracker. In this article, a brief report on detector construction with a present 20 μ m -thick straw, R&D on a new 12 μ m -thick straw, and a brand-new graphite straw, is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 19 GeV/c[superscript 2] decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb[superscript -1]. The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c[superscript 2]to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c[superscript 2]., National Science Foundation (U.S.)

Abstract

Tensorial non-standard neutrino interactions are studied through a combined analysis of nuclear structure calculations and a sensitivity χ 2 -type of neutrino events expected to be measured at the COHERENT experiment, recently planned to operate at the Spallation Neutron Source (Oak Ridge). Potential sizeable predictions on transition neutrino magnetic moments and other electromagnetic parameters, such as neutrino milli-charges, are also addressed. The non-standard neutrino–nucleus processes, explored from nuclear physics perspectives within the context of quasi-particle random phase approximation, are exploited in order to estimate the expected number of events originating from vector and tensor exotic interactions for the case of reactor neutrinos, studied with TEXONO and GEMMA neutrino detectors. Abstract

The type-III seesaw seems to explain the very minuteness of neutrino masses readily and naturally. The high-energy see-saw theories usually involve a larger number of effective parametres than the physical and measurable parametres appearing in the low-energy neutrino phenomenology. Casas-Ibarra parametrisation facilitates to encode the information lost in integrating the heavy fermions out in an arbitrary complex orthogonal matrix. The CMS collaboration has already searched for triplet fermions in the type-III seesaw model with only one generation of triplet fermion flavour democratically decaying into SM leptons. We reinterpret this CMS search in the context of a realistic type-III seesaw model with two or three generations of triplet fermions, and endeavour to comprehend the implications of the foregoing matrix on the $95\%$ CL lower limit on the mass of the triplet fermions. We also discuss the phenomenological implication of the aforesaid matrix in view of charged lepton flavour violating observables and displaced decays of the triplet fermions at colliders., 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Searches at the LHC of lepton flavour violation (LFV) in slepton decays can indirectly test both type-I and II seesaw mechanisms. Assuming universal flavour-blind boundary conditions, LFV in the neutrino sector is related to LFV in the slepton sector by means of the renormalization group equations. Ratios of LFV slepton decay rates result to be a very effective way to extract the imprint left by the neutrino sector. Some neutrino scenarios within the type-I seesaw mechanism are studied. Moreover, for both type-I and II seesaw mechanisms, a scan over the minimal super-gravity parameter space is performed to estimate how large LFV slepton decay rates can be, while respecting current low-energy constraints. Abstract

We study gravitino dark matter and slow gravitino decays in supersymmetric theories with broken R-parity. It turns out that for the model parameters that may give rise to viable radiative neutrino masses, and visible R-violating signatures in colliders, gravitinos are cosmologically stable and can be good dark matter candidates. On the contrary, the decays of the Next-to-Lightest Supersymmetric Particle are fast, and can be easily reconciled with Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. For the interesting range of parameters, observable lepton flavour violation is also to be expected, with rates that are strongly dependent from the flavour structure of the R-violating operators, and with distinct correlations that should be distinguishable in the coming generation of experiments. Abstract: The nuclear aspects of flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, predicted by various new-physics models to occur in the presence of nuclei, are examined by computing the relevant nuclear matrix elements within the context of the quasi-particle RPA using realistic strong two-body forces. One of our aims is to explore the role of the non-standard interactions (NSI) in the leptonic sector and specifically: (i) in lepton flavour violating (LFV) processes involving the neutral particles and , and (ii) in charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) processes involving the charged leptons or . As concrete nuclear systems we have chosen the stopping targets of conversion experiments, i.e. the 48Ti nucleus of the PRIME/PRISM experiment at J-PARC and the 27Al of the COMET at J-PARC as well as of the Mu2e at Fermilab. These experiments have been designed to reduce the single event sensitivity down to 10−16–10−18 in searching for charged lepton mixing events. Our goal is, by taking advantage of our detailed nuclear structure calculations and using the present limits or the sensitivity of the aforementioned exotic experiments, to put stringent constraints on the parameters of NSI Lagrangians. Abstract

An automatic target monitoring method based on photographs taken by a CMOS photo-camera has been developed for the MEG II detector. The technique could be adapted for other fixed-target experiments requiring good knowledge of their target position to avoid biases and systematic errors in measuring the trajectories of the outcoming particles. A CMOS-based, high resolution, high radiation tolerant and high magnetic field resistant photo-camera was mounted inside the MEG II detector at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland). MEG II is used to search for lepton flavour violation in muon decays. The photogrammetric method's challenges, affecting measurements of low momentum particles' tracks, are high magnetic field of the spectrometer, high radiation levels, tight space constraints, and the need to limit the material budget in the tracking volume. The camera is focused on dot pattern drawn on the thin MEG II target, about 1 m away from the detector endcaps where the photo-camera is placed. Target movements and deformations are monitored by comparing images of the dots taken at various times during the measurement. The images are acquired with a Raspberry board and analyzed using a custom software. Global alignment to the spectrometer is guaranteed by corner cubes placed on the target support. Abstract

In this review article, we highlight the impact of models incorporating flavour symmetries on charged lepton flavour violating (LFV) processes. Flavour symmetries provide a natural approach to explain the peculiar mass hierarchies and mixing patterns of the Standard Model fermions. New sources of LFV are generally present in new physics beyond the Standard Model, and flavour symmetries can make distinctive predictions for LFV observables. Their discovery can provide crucial information to distinguish flavour symmetries and new physics scenarios in general. Because of their high sensitivity, we will focus on searches for low-energy LFV processes such as μ → e γ or μ-e conversion in nuclei but we will also highlight the potential impact of LFV processes at the LHC. Discrete non-Abelian Symmetries have been extensively used to reproduce the lepton mixings. In particular, the S4 group turned out to be suitable to describe predictive mixing patterns, such as the well-known Tri-Bimaximal and the Bimaximal schemes, which all represent possible first approximations of the experimental lepton mixing matrix. We review the main application of the S4 discrete group as a flavour symmetry, first dealing with the formalism and later with the phenomenological implications. In particular, we summarize the main features of flavour models based on S4, commenting on their ability in reproducing a reactor angle in agreement with the recent data and on their predictions for lepton flavour violating transitions. 38. Probing Higgs Boson physics in decays to tau leptons with the ATLAS experiment

Abstract

The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 has opened up a new sector of particle physics to measurements of yet undiscovered couplings. Measurements of the numerous couplings of the Higgs boson - primarily through studies of bosonic decays - have consistently confirmed the Standard Model of Particle Physics. The measurement of fermionic Yukawa couplings, which is a free parameter of the Standard Model, is a critical test of the origin of mass in the Standard Model and serves as a probe for a wide array of new physics models. This thesis presents a measurement, search and feasibility study of couplings of the Higgs boson to the third generation lepton, the tau . A measurement is presented of the H -> tau tau cross-section which is performed using 36.1 inverse fb of sqrt(s) = 13 TeV collision data collected at the Large Hadron Collider by the ATLAS detector. A 6.4 sigma excess over the background-only hypothesis was observed in combination with sqrt(s) = 7, 8 TeV which constitutes a discovery of the final remaining coupling to third generation fermions. The total cross-section was measured as 3.70 +- 0.58(stat) +0.89-0.75(syst) pb, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Several new physics models predict phenomena which can probed in supressed Higgs boson decays: one such phenomena is lepton flavour violation. A search for lepton flavour violating Higgs boson decays to e,mu and mu,e final states, using a new multivariate approach, is also detailed. This search used the same dataset as for the H -> tau tau cross-section. No excess is observed and upper limits on the branching ratio for H -> mu tau and H -> e tau of 0.47% and 0.28% are set, respectively. The limit on H -> e tau is now the new global limit. Finally a feasibility study for measuring the state of the Higgs boson using decays to two tau leptons is demonstrated. Abstract

In minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) or CMSSM, one of the main co-annihilating partners of the neutralino is the lightest stau, $\tilde{\tau}_1$. In the presence of flavour violation in the right-handed sector, the co-annihilating partner would be a flavour mixed state. The flavour effect is two-fold: (a) It changes the mass of $\tilde{\tau}_{1}$, thus modifying the parameter space of the co-annihilation and (b) flavour violating scatterings could now contribute to the cross-sections in the early Universe. In fact, it is shown that for large enough δ~0.2, these processes would constitute the dominant channels in co-annihilation regions. The amount of flavour mixing permissible is constrained by flavour violating τ→ μ or τ→ e processes. For Δ mass insertions, the constraints from flavour violation are not strong enough in some regions of the parameter space due to partial cancellations in the amplitudes. In mSUGRA, the regions with cancelations within LFV amplitudes do not overlap with the regions of co-annihilations. In non-universal Higgs model (NUHM), however, these regions do overlap leading to significant flavoured co-annihilations. Abstract: In the absence of a fundamental principle preventing charged lepton flavour violation, one expects that extensions of the Standard Model accommodating neutrino masses and mixings should also allow for charged lepton flavour violating processes such as , and conversion in nuclei, for which the rates depend in general on the mechanism of neutrino mass generation. In addition to low-energy experiments, there are also searches for lepton flavour violation at colliders, where new physics can be directly probed through flavour violating production and/or decays of heavy states. In a model independent way, we briefly use effective operators responsible for these processes to derive information about the underlying framework of new physics. We then consider some specific classes of models (supersymmetry, extra dimensions, grand unified theories) that account for rich scenarios of charged lepton flavour violation. Abstract: Presented are the preliminary results of a search for the lepton-flavour violating decay μ→ eγ by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland. These results are based on data taken during a two months period in 2009 and amount to some 6·1013 muon decays in the detector. Using a blind likelihood analysis technique a sensitivity of 6.1·10-12 on the branching ratio is achieved with a preliminary upper limit on the branching ratio set at 1.5·10-11 at a 90% confidence level. Abstract: We investigate nuclear conversion in the framework of an effective Lagrangian arising from the inverse seesaw model of neutrino masses. We consider lepton flavour violation interactions that arise from short range (non-photonic) as well as long range (photonic) contributions. Upper bounds for the -parameters characterizing conversion are derived in the inverse seesaw model Lagrangian using the available limits on the conversion branching ratio, as well as the expected sensitivities of upcoming experiments. We comment on the relative importance of these two types of contributions and their relationship with the measured solar neutrino mixing angle and the dependence on . Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports a search for the lepton number violating decays K+ -> pi(-)e(+)e(+) and K+ -> pi(-)mu(+)mu(+) using a data sample collected in 2017. No signals are observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions of these decays of 2.2 x 10(-10) and 4.2 x 10(-11) are obtained, respectively, at 90% confidence level. These upper limits improve on previously reported measurements by factors of 3 and 2, respectively., It is a pleasure to express our appreciation to the staff of the CERN laboratory and the technical staffs of the participating laboratories and universities for their efforts in the operation of the experiment and data processing. 50. Lepton Flavour Violation searches and scintillating fibre tracker testing in LHCb

Abstract

This thesis presents new results on searches for lepton-flavour-violating particle decays, performed in the LHCb experiment at CERN. Two analyses are discussed in detail. The first one concerns the B(s,d)->e mu decay. No evidence of signal is observed and two upper limits are set, respectively for the Bd and Bs mesons: BF(Bd -> e mu) < 1.0(1.3)x10^(-9) and BF(Bs -> e mu) < 6.0(7.2)x10^(-9). The second analysis concerns the baryon sector: the Lambdab -> Lambda e mu decay is searched. This study is currently under review in the LHCb collaboration. The whole procedure is described here in detail and its final results will be added when available. Furthermore, the present thesis contains a description and the results of the quality assurance process for the production of mats of scintillating fibres for the SciFi, a new tracker for the LHCb detector developed in view of the Run III of LHC.
