Aim: Vericiguat significantly reduced the primary composite outcome of heart failure (HF) hospitalization or cardiovascular death in the VICTORIA trial. It is unknown if these outcome benefits are related to reverse left ventricular (LV) remodelling with vericiguat in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The aim of this study was to compare the effects of vericiguat versus placebo on LV structure and function after 8 months of therapy in patients with HFrEF. Methods and results: Standardized transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was performed at baseline and after 8 months of therapy in a subset of HFrEF patients in VICTORIA. The co‐primary endpoints were changes in LV end‐systolic volume index (LVESVI) and LV ejection fraction (LVEF). Quality assurance and central reading were performed by an echocardiographic core laboratory blinded to treatment assignment. A total of 419 patients (208 vericiguat, 211 placebo) with high‐quality paired TTE at baseline and 8 months were included. Baseline clinical characteristics were well balanced between treatment groups and echocardiographic characteristics were representative of patients with HFrEF. LVESVI significantly declined (60.7 ± 26.8 to 56.8 ± 30.4 ml/m2; p < 0.01) and LVEF significantly increased (33.0 ± 9.4% to 36.1 ± 10.2%; p < 0.01) in the vericiguat group, but similarly in the placebo group (absolute changes for vericiguat vs. placebo: LVESVI −3.8 ± 15.4 vs. −7.1 ± 20.5 ml/m2; p = 0.07 and LVEF +3.2 ± 8.0% vs. +2.4 ± 7.6%; p = 0.31). The absolute rate per 100 patient‐years of the primary composite endpoint at 8 months tended to be lower in the vericiguat group (19.8) than the placebo group (29.6) (p = 0.07). Conclusions: In this pre‐specified echocardiographic study, significant improvements in LV structure and function occurred over 8 months in both vericiguat and placebo in a high‐risk HFrEF population with recent worsening HF. Few studies have examined the sex differences in left ventricle (LV) structure and physiology from early life stages. We aimed to assess the role of sex and overweight/obesity on left ventricular mass (LVM) and LV volume in Chinese children without preexisting cardiovascular risk factors. We selected 934 healthy children aged 6–8 years from an existing cohort in Beijing, China. Linear regression models were used to regress body mass index (BMI), fat mass, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and visceral fat area (VFA) with LVM, left ventricle end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) and end-systolic volume (LVESV). Higher BMI, fat mass, waist circumference, VFA, and stroke volume (SV) predicted higher LVM, LVEDV, and LVESV in both sexes. Multivariable analysis showed that boys with an elevated BMI had greater LV hypertrophy. LVEDV and LVESV were higher among boys than among girls and increased with higher BMI in both boys and girls. LVEDV and LVESV were associated with VFA in boys. We observed sex differences in LVM, LVESV, and LVEDV among prepubertal children, independent of obesity, with higher values observed in boys. Sex differences in cardiac structure in children may help explain the higher incidence of cardiovascular disease in male adults. This study examined the association of prediabetes (PDM), DM and HbA1c with left ventricular structure and function among Jackson Heart Study (JHS) participants without traditional risk factors. Background: The impact of the menstrual phases on left ventricular (LV) structure and function using 3D echocardiography and resting electrocardiogram (ECG) in healthy, eumenorrheic, and physically active females has not been investigated. Methods: sixteen females (20 y ± 2) underwent 3D echocardiography and an ECG at three time points in the menstrual cycle phases (follicular, ovulation, luteal). LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDVi), LV ejection fraction (LVEF), LV mass allometrically indexed to height2.7 (LVMi), torsion, and global longitudinal, circumferential, and radial strain (GLS, GCS, and GRS) were evaluated. ECG data of the P and QRS waves were presented as well as axis deviation, chamber enlargement, and any rhythm abnormalities. Results: LVMi was significantly higher in the luteal phase (36.4 g/m2.7 ± 3.3) compared to the follicular (35.0 g/m2.7 ± 3.7) and ovulation (34.7 g/m2.7 ± 4.3) phases (p = 0.026). There were no differences in other indices of LV structure and function or ECG variables across all phases of the menstrual cycle or evidence of arrhythmia. Conclusions: In physically active females, there is a small but significantly higher LVMi associated with the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle with no concomitant change in LV function or ECG parameters. These findings are important to consider when conducting clinical or research serial assessments.

BackgroundDifferent regional depots of fat have distinct metabolic properties and may relate differently to adverse cardiac remodeling. We sought to quantify regional depots of body fat and to investigate their relationship to cardiac structure and function in Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and controls.MethodsFrom the SCAPIS cohort in Linköping, Sweden, we recruited 92 subjects (35% female, mean age 59.5 ± 4.6 years): 46 with T2D and 46 matched controls. In addition to the core SCAPIS data collection, participants underwent a comprehensive magnetic resonance imaging examination at 1.5 T for assessment of left ventricular (LV) structure and function (end-diastolic volume, mass, concentricity, ejection fraction), as well as regional body composition (liver proton density fat fraction, visceral adipose tissue, abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue, thigh muscle fat infiltration, fat tissue-free thigh muscle volume and epicardial adipose tissue).ResultsCompared to the control group, the T2D group had increased: visceral adipose tissue volume index (P < 0.001), liver fat percentage (P < 0.001), thigh muscle fat infiltration percentage (P = 0.02), LV concentricity (P < 0.001) and LV E/e'-ratio (P < 0.001). In a multiple linear regression analysis, a negative association between liver fat percentage and LV mass (St Beta −0.23, P < 0.05) as well as LV end-diastolic volume (St Beta −0.27, P < 0.05) was found. Epicardial adipose tissue volume and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue volume index were the only parameters of fat associated with LV diastolic dysfunction (E/e'-ratio) (St Beta 0.24, P < 0.05; St Beta 0.34, P < 0.01, respectively). In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, only visceral adipose tissue volume index was significantly associated with T2D, with an odds ratio for T2D of 3.01 (95% CI 1.28–7.05, P < 0.05) per L/m2 increase in visceral adipose tissue volume.ConclusionsEctopic fat is predominantly associated with cardiac remodeling, independently of type 2 diabetes. Intriguingly, liver fat appears to be related to LV structure independently of VAT, while epicardial fat is linked to impaired LV diastolic function. Visceral fat is associated with T2D independently of liver fat and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue.

Normal cardiac function is directly associated with the maintenance of cerebrovascular health. Whether the Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, designed for the maintenance of neurocognitive health, is associated with cardiac remodelling is unknown. We evaluated 2512 Framingham Offspring Cohort participants who attended the eighth examination cycle and had available dietary and echocardiographic data (mean age 66 years; 55 % women). Using multivariable regression, we related the cumulative MIND diet score (independent variable) to left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, left atrial emptying fraction, LV mass (LVM), E/e' ratio (dependent variables; primary), global longitudinal strain, global circumferential strain (GCS), mitral annular plane systolic excursion, longitudinal segmental synchrony, LV hypertrophy and aortic root diameter (secondary). Adjusting for age, sex and energy intake, higher cumulative MIND diet scores were associated with lower values of indices of LV diastolic (E/e' ratio: logβ = −0·03) and systolic function (GCS: β = −0·04) and with higher values of LVM (logβ = 0·02), all P ≤ 0·01. We observed effect modification by age in the association between the cumulative MIND diet score and GCS. When we further adjusted for clinical risk factors, the associations of the cumulative MIND diet score with GCS in participants ≥66 years (β = −0·06, P = 0·005) and LVM remained significant. In our community-based sample, relations between the cumulative MIND diet score and cardiac remodelling differ among indices of LV structure and function. Our results suggest that favourable associations between a higher cumulative MIND diet score and indices of LV function may be influenced by cardiometabolic and lifestyle risk factors. Alteration in left ventricular (LV) structure and diastolic function is associated with poor cardiovascular (CV) prognosis. Coronary artery calcium score (CACS) is a reliable marker for coronary artery calcification, predicting adverse CV events. However, evidence is still insufficient to establish the association between alteration in LV structure and diastolic function and CACS. 9053 Korean adults (male: 84.2%, mean age: 42.5 years) were grouped by quartile levels of echocardiographic parameters for LV structure and diastolic function. CACS was detected by multidirectional computed tomography and categorized into CACS > 0 or CACS = 0. Multivariate regression analysis was used to calculate adjusted odd ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for CACS > 0 (adjusted OR [95% CI]) in each quartile group of echocardiographic parameters (reference: quartile 1 group). CACS > 0 was significantly associated with structural parameters above third quartile in LVMI (1.19 [1.00–1.41]), RWT (1.23 [1.03–1.46]) and IVST (1.42 [1.20–1.70]) and fourth quartile in PWT (1.36 [1.14–1.63]). In parameters of diastolic function, septal eʹ velocity ≥ 10.7 cm/s (fourth quartile) was less associated with CACS > 0 than septal eʹ velocity ≤ 7.7 cm/s (first quartile). Additionally, the fourth quartile of E/eʹ was more significantly associated with CACS > 0 than that of first quartile. Cardiac myocyte atrophy and the resulting decreases to the left ventricular mass and dimensions are well documented in spinal cord injury. Therapeutic interventions that increase preload can increase the chamber size and improve the diastolic filling ratios; however, there are no data describing cardiac adaptation to chronic afterload increases. Research from our center has demonstrated that spinal cord epidural stimulation (scES) can normalize arterial blood pressure, so we decided to investigate the effects of scES on cardiac function using echocardiography. Four individuals with chronic, motor-complete cervical spinal cord injury were implanted with a stimulator over the lumbosacral enlargement. We assessed the cardiac structure and function at the following time points: (a) prior to implantation; (b) after scES targeted to increase systolic blood pressure; (c) after the addition of scES targeted to facilitate voluntary (i.e., with intent) movement of the trunk and lower extremities; and (d) after the addition of scES targeted to facilitate independent, overground standing. We found significant improvements to the cardiac structure (left ventricular mass = 10 ± 2 g, p < 0.001; internal dimension during diastole = 0.1 ± 0.04 cm, p < 0.05; internal dimension during systole = 0.06 ± 0.03 cm, p < 0.05; interventricular septum dimension = 0.04 ± 0.02 cm, p < 0.05), systolic function (ejection fraction = 1 ± 0.4%, p < 0.05; velocity time integral = 2 ± 0.4 cm, p < 0.001; stroke volume = 4.4 ± 1.5 ml, p < 0.01), and diastolic function (mitral valve deceleration time = -32 ± 11 ms, p < 0.05; mitral valve deceleration slope = 50 ± 25 cm s–1, p < 0.05; isovolumic relaxation time = −6 ± 1.9 ms, p < 0.05) with each subsequent scES intervention. Despite the pilot nature of this study, statistically significant improvements to the cardiac structure, systolic function, and diastolic function demonstrate that scES combined with task-specific interventions led to beneficial cardiac remodeling, which can reverse atrophic changes that result from spinal cord injury. Long-term improvements to cardiac function have implications for increased quality of life and improved cardiovascular health in individuals with spinal cord injury, decreasing the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Objective To observe the changes of left ventricular structure and function in patients with hypertensive disorders complicating pregnancy (HDCP), and to explore their correlations with the growth and development of the newboms. Methods Eighty-seven patients with HDCP were selected, including 66 patients with gestational hypertension (HOP group), 21 patients with preeclampsia (preeclampsia group), and 50 normal pregnant women (control group). The left ventricular structure and function of the three groups were observed by echocardiography, and the pregnancy outcomes were tracked. Apgar score at 5 min of birth, birth mass, head circumference and body length were recorded. Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlations between left heart structure and function parameters of HDCP patients and Apgar score, birth mass, head circumference and body length of newborns. Results Compared with the HOP group and control group, the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (L VEDD) and interventricular septal thickness (IVST) in the preeclampsia group were higher (all P < 0. 05), the ratio of early diastolic peak filling velocity to late diastolic peak filling velocity (E/ A) was lower (P< 0. 05) ; compared with the control group, the ElA ratio of the HOP group was lower (P< 0.0 5). Compared with HOP group and control group, the Apgar score at 5 min of birth, birth mass, head circumference and body length of newborns were lower in the preeclampsia group (P < 0. 05). Background and Aims: Elevated serum calcium and phosphorus have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disorders. We evaluated whether abnormal calcium and high serum phosphorus are associated cross-sectionally with echocardiographic measures of left ventricular (LV) structure and function, as doing so may provide insight into the etiology of cardiac disorders.Methods and Results: Included in the analysis were 5213 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) participants who in 2011-2013 had echocardiography and serum calcium and phosphorus measurements. We evaluated the association of serum calcium (corrected for albumin) and phosphorus quintiles with measures of LV structure and function, after adjusting for other cardiovascular risk factors. Participants were on average 75.3 years old; 59.1% were female and 19.8% were African American. Mean (±SD) concentrations of calcium and phosphorus were 9.33 ± 0.38 and 3.46 ± 0.45 mg/dL, respectively. Higher calcium was associated with lower LV end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) but greater prevalence of concentric remodeling (p-trend: 0.005 and 0.004 respectively). We observed association between high phosphorus and high septal E/e' (p-trend: 0.02). Likewise, higher serum phosphorus was associated with higher left atrial volume index (p-trend: 0.001) and LV hypertrophy prevalence (p-trend: 0.04).Conclusions: In conclusion, higher calcium was associated with more concentric remodeling but lower LVEDD, suggesting complex associations between calcium and cardiac function. Serum phosphorus was related to worse indices of LV diastolic function and LV hypertrophy, but not to LV systolic function. Background: The effects of diabetes mellitus and gender on left ventricular structure in hypertension are still controversial. Objective: To evaluate the effects of diabetes mellitus and gender on left ventricular structure in a sample of hypertensive patients in Erbil-Iraq. Patients and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in Rizgary hospital, Erbil- Iraq, between April 2015 and April 2016. A convenient sample of 200 patients (100 males and 100 females), aged =18 years were enrolled. Half of the sample (Group I) had diabetes in addition to hypertension, while the other half (Group II) had hypertension only. The effects of diabetes mellitus and gender on left ventricular structure were evaluated in both groups. Results: In Group I, left ventricular diastolic and systolic dimensions were significantly higher among male patients (P=0.023, 0.022 respectively) than female patients. In group II, the mean thickness of posterior wall, left ventricular mass, left ventricular mass index and relative wall thickness was significantly higher among male patients (P=0.004, 0.016, 0.035 and 0.045 respectively) than female patients. The mean thickness of interventricular septum, posterior wall and relative wall thickness (P=0.0013, 0.007 and 0.003 respectively) was significantly higher in diabetic females than non-diabetic females. No significant differences were found between diabetic and non-diabetic males. Conclusion: There is an obvious effect of gender and diabetes on left ventricular structure. In the hypertensive non-diabetic group, the left ventricular structural changes were significantly seen among male patients than females. Background : The impact of the menstrual phases on left ventricular (LV) structure and function using 3D echocardiography and resting electrocardiogram (ECG) in healthy, eumenorrheic, and physically active females has not been investigated. Methods: sixteen females (20 y ± 2) underwent 3D echocardiography and an ECG at three time points in the menstrual cycle phases (follicular, ovulation, luteal). LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDVi), LV ejection fraction (LVEF), LV mass allometrically indexed to height 2.7 (LVMi), torsion, and global longitudinal, circumferential, and radial strain (GLS, GCS, and GRS) were evaluated. ECG data of the P and QRS waves were presented as well as axis deviation, chamber enlargement, and any rhythm abnormalities. Results: LVMi was significantly higher in the luteal phase (36.4 g/m 2.7 ± 3.3) compared to the follicular (35.0 g/m 2.7 ± 3.7) and ovulation (34.7 g/m 2.7 ± 4.3) phases ( p = 0.026). There were no differences in other indices of LV structure and function or ECG variables across all phases of the menstrual cycle or evidence of arrhythmia. Conclusions: In physically active females, there is a small but significantly higher LVMi associated with the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle with no concomitant change in LV function or ECG parameters. These findings are important to consider when conducting clinical or research serial assessments.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to detect left ventricular (LV) structure and function abnormalities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with or without nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) using 3‐dimensional speckle‐tracking echocardiography. Methods: Eighty patients with type 2 diabetes and a normal LV ejection fraction (≥55%), including 40 with coexistent NAFL, and 40 age‐ and sex‐matched control participants were recruited. Conventional echocardiography and 3‐dimensional speckle‐tracking echocardiography were performed, and global longitudinal strain, global circumferential strain, global area strain, and global radial strain values were measured. Results: Significant differences in 2‐dimensional LV functional patterns were found among the 3 groups (P = .031), and LV hypertrophy was the most prevalent in patients with diabetes and NAFL. The patients with diabetes only had significantly lower global longitudinal strain, global circumferential strain, and global radial strain than the controls (all P < .05). The patients with diabetes and NAFL had severely lower global longitudinal strain, global circumferential strain, global area strain, and global radial strain than the controls (all P < .001), and they also had severely lower global longitudinal strain, global area strain, and global radial strain than the patients with diabetes only (all P < 0.001). The hemoglobin A1c level and NAFL were independently associated with strain values in all patients with diabetes. The strain values in multiple directions (≥2 of global longitudinal, global circumferential, global area, and global radial strain) decreased significantly in the patients with diabetes and moderate and severe NAFL compared to those with mild NAFL (all P < .05). Conclusions: Nonalcoholic fatty liver could aggravate LV hypertrophy and dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. Objectives We assessed to what extent arterial properties measured at baseline and follow-up predict longitudinal alterations in echocardiographic indexes reflecting left ventricular (LV) structure and function. Background Serial imaging studies are needed to clarify the relation of changes in LV structure and function to arterial stiffness. Methods In 607 participants (50.7% women; mean age 50.7 years), using echocardiography and Doppler imaging, we measured LV dimensions, transmitral blood flow, and mitral annular tissue velocities at baseline and after 4.7 years. Using applanation tonometry, we assessed central pulse pressure (cPP) and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) at baseline. We regressed longitudinal changes in LV indexes on the arterial stiffness parameters and reported standardized effect sizes as a fraction of SD of LV change. Results After full adjustment, longitudinal increase in LV septal (standardized effect size: +14.4%; p = 0.0018) and posterior wall (+12.6%; p = 0.0027) thickness was associated with higher baseline PWV, whereas LV internal diameter (-12.4%; p = 0.012) decreased during follow-up with PWV. Consequently, greater increase in relative wall thickness was associated with higher baseline PWV (+17.2%; p <0.0001). Participants with higher baseline PWV had a greater risk to develop or retain LV concentric remodeling during follow-up (odds ratio 1.35; p = 0.028). In addition, in women, baseline cPP predicted a greater increase in LV mass (+22.8%; p = 0.0009) and E/e′ ratio (+36.1%; p <0.0001). Conclusions Progression to LV concentric remodeling pattern was associated with higher baseline PWV. In women, cPP predicted worsening of LV diastolic function. Contrast echocardiography is widely used in cardiology. It is applied to improve image quality, reader confidence and reproducibility both for assessing left ventricular (LV) structure and function at rest and for assessing global and regional function in stress echocardiography. The use of contrast in echocardiography has now extended beyond cardiac structure and function assessment to evaluation of perfusion both of the myocardium and of the intracardiac structures. Safety of contrast agents have now been addressed in large patient population and these studies clearly established its excellent safety profile. This document, based on clinical trials, randomized and multicentre studies and published clinical experience, has established clear recommendations for the use of contrast in various clinical conditions with evidence-based protocols. The left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) and interventricular septum thickness (IVST) are generally regarded as the functional parts of the left ventricular (LV) structure. This paper aims to examine the effects of geographical indices on healthy Han adults' LV structural indices and to offer a scientific basis for developing a unified standard for the reference values of adults' LV structural indices in China. Fifteen terrain, climate, and soil indices were examined as geographical explanatory variables. Statistical analysis was performed using correlation analysis. Moreover, a back propagation neural network (BPNN) and a support vector regression (SVR) were applied to developing models to predict the values of two indices. After the prediction models were built, distribution maps were produced. The results show that LV structural indices are characteristically associated with latitude, longitude, altitude, average temperature, average wind velocity, topsoil sand fraction, topsoil silt fraction, topsoil organic carbon, and topsoil sodicity. The model test analyses show the BPNN model possesses better simulative and predictive ability in comparison with the SVR model. The distribution maps of the LV structural indices show that, in China, the values are higher in the west and lower in the east. These results demonstrate that the reference values of the adults' LV structural indices will be different affected by different geographical environment. The reference values of LV structural indices in one region can be calculated by setting up a BPNN, which showed better applicability in this study. Our aim was to compare left ventricular (LV) deformation in subjects with masked hypertension (MH) to normotensive and sustained hypertensive patients. This cross-sectional study included 185 untreated subjects who underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring and complete two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) examination including multilayer strain analysis. MH was diagnosed if clinic BP was normal (<140/90 mm Hg), and 24-hour BP was increased (≥130/80 mm Hg). 2DE LV longitudinal and circumferential strains gradually and significantly decreased from normotensive controls across MH individuals to sustained hypertensive patients. 2DE radial strain was not different between groups. 2DE longitudinal and circumferential endocardial and midmyocardial layer strains progressively decreased from normotensive control to sustained hypertensive individuals. Longitudinal and circumferential epicardial layer strains were lower in sustained hypertensive patients than in normotensive controls. Clinic and 24-hour systolic BP were associated with 2DE LV longitudinal endocardial strain, midmyocardial strain, and 2DE circumferential endocardial strain in the whole-study population independent of LV structure and diastolic function. MH significantly affect LV deformation assessed by 2DE traditional strain and 2DE multilayer strain. Background: Data are limited on the relation between dietary patterns and left ventricular (LV) structure and function. Objective: We examined cross-sectional associations of a diet-score assessment of a Mediterranean dietary pattern with LV mass, volume, mass-to-volume ratio, stroke volume, and ejection fraction. Design: We measured LV variables with the use of cardiac MRI in 4497 participants in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis study who were aged 45-84 y and without clinical cardiovascular disease. We calculated a Mediterranean diet score from intakes of fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, whole grains, fish, red meat, the mono-unsaturated fat:saturated fat ratio, and alcohol that were self-reported with the use of a food-frequency questionnaire. We used linear regression with adjustment for body size, physical activity, and cardiovascular disease risk factors to model associations and assess the shape of these associations (linear or quadratic). Results: The Mediterranean diet score had a slight U-shaped association with LV mass (adjusted means: 146, 145, 146, and 147 g across quartiles of diet score, respectively; P-quadratic trend = 0.04). The score was linearly associated with LV volume, stroke volume, and ejection fraction: for each +1-U difference in score, LV volume was 0.4 mL higher (95% CI: 0.0, 0.8 mL higher), the stroke volume was 0.5 mL higher (95% CI: 0.2, 0.8 mL higher), and the ejection fraction was 0.2 percentage points higher (95% CI: 0.1, 0.3 percentage points higher). The score was not associated with the mass-to-volume ratio. Conclusions: A higher Mediterranean diet score is cross-sectionally associated with a higher LV mass, which is balanced by a higher LV volume as well as a higher ejection fraction and stroke volume. Participants in this healthy, multiethnic sample whose dietary patterns most closely conformed to a Mediterranean-type pattern had a modestly better LV structure and function than did participants with less-Mediterranean-like dietary patterns. Background: High left ventricular mass (LVM) is an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease and mortality, but information relating LVM in older age to growth in early life is limited. We assessed the relationship of birthweight, height and body mass index (BMI) and overweight across childhood and adolescence with later life left ventricular (LV) structure.Methods: We used data from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD) on men and women born in 1946 in Britain and followed up ever since. We use regression models to relate prospective measures of birthweight and height and BMI from ages 2-20 years to LV structure at 60-64 years.Results: Positive associations of birthweight with LVM and LV end diastolic volume (LVEDV) at 60-64 years were largely explained by adult height. Higher BMI, greater changes in BMI and greater accumulation of overweight across childhood and adolescence were associated with higher LVM and LVEDV and odds of concentric hypertrophy. Those who were overweight at two ages in early life had a mean LVM 11.5 g (95% confidence interval: -2.19,24.87) greater, and a mean LVEDV 10.0 ml (3.7,16.2) greater, than those who were not overweight. Associations were at least partially mediated through adult body mass index. Body size was less consistently associated with relative wall thickness (RWT), with the strongest association being observed with pubertal BMI change [0.007 (0.001,0.013) per standard deviation change in BMI 7-15 years]. The relationships between taller childhood height and LVM and LVEDV were explained by adult height.Conclusions: Given the increasing levels of overweight in contemporary cohorts of children, these findings further emphasize the need for effective interventions to prevent childhood overweight. Background: Aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) is one of the most studied candidate genes related to essential hypertension (EH) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Some studies have focused on the relationship between -344C/T polymorphism (rs1799998) in the CYP11B2 gene and LVH, but the results are controversial. This meta-analysis is purposed to reveal the relationship between the -344C/T and the left ventricular structure and function, including left ventricular end diastolic dimension (LVEDD), left ventricular end systolic diameter (LVESD), left ventricular mass/left ventricular mass index (LVM/LVMI), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT), and interventricular septal wall thickness (IVS).Methods: A literature search of PubMed and Embase databases was conducted on articles published before January 27, 2014. The odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Heterogeneity analyses were performed using meta-regression. Tests for publication bias were also performed and biased studies should be removed from subsequent analyses.Results: There were 20 studies with a total of 6780 subjects meeting the inclusion criteria. The main finding was that concentration levels of LVEDD and LVESD were higher in CC homozygous individuals than in TT homozygous individuals in the whole group. In the Asian subgroup, TT homozygous individuals had larger IVS than CC homozygous individuals. In the Caucasian normotension subgroup, CC homozygous individuals had larger LVM/LVMI than TT homozygous individuals. In the Asian essential hypertension subgroup, TT homozygous individuals had larger LVPWT values than CC homozygous individuals.Conclusions: The present findings support the hypothesis that CC homozygous individuals may have greater left ventricular diameters (LVEDD and LVESD) regardless of their ethnicities or physical conditions.
