The article examines the problem of the teacher’s professional growth due to continuous selfeducation and personal development in the conditions of martial law. The aim of the article is to outline the pathways of self-educational activities for teachers and the approaches to enhancing the professional level of educators, implemented at Alfred Nobel University under martial law conditions. In the course of the research, methods of analogy, retrospective and semantic analysis, SWOT analysis, generalization, and specification of scientific principles and the regulatory framework related to teacher self-education were employed. A SWOT analysis of interpretations of the concept of “self-education” was conducted, and it was found that self-education is a necessary component of professional activity which is determined by social order and is a factor in the personal and professional growth of a specialist. Emphasis is placed on self-education of the teacher as the leading form of improvement of pedagogical skill and professional competence, which consists in assimilation, renewal, dissemination and deepening of knowledge, generalization of experience through purposeful, systematic self-education activities aimed at self-development and self-improvement of the individual, satisfaction of personal interests and objective needs of the educational institution. It was found that the conditions of the martial law in Ukraine and changes in educational orientations made corrections both in the content of teachers’ self-education and in the forms and types of their self-education activities. Some approaches to raising the professional level of a teacher, which were implemented at Alfred Nobel University under martial law conditions, namely acquiring competencies to preserve and restore mental health, providing psychological support to participants in the educational process, improving information competence, implementing effective ways to improve the quality of education in online learning, and mastering new learning/teaching methods, are considered. The content of the developed and implemented comprehensive program of care for human mental health, including a marathon of online meetings with domestic specialists and lecturers from European countries, aimed at mastering the competencies to ensure one’s own psychological health and improve the psycho-emotional state of higher education students in wartime conditions, is disclosed. The expediency of particular directions of development has been substantiated including teachers’ mastering various software, the ability to work on various educational platforms, and the use of interactive applications; cooperation and interaction with domestic and foreign higher education institutions in order to gain experience for the further implementation of the best European practices in the educational process; internships, participation in international projects, thanks to which teachers found and implemented effective ways to improve the quality of education in online learning, and mastered new methods of learning/ teaching. The feasibility of implementing special measures to support the self-educational activities of teachers under martial law conditions has been confirmed, with a focus on the targeted development of key professional competencies related to continuous professional self-development. The conclusions emphasise the need for purposeful self-education of the teacher, thanks to which a new invaluable experience of providing quality education in wartime conditions is formed.

Quality Assurance in higher education is a lean tool to improve the quality and performance of HEIs, including lecturer research performance. This study examines the effect of implementing Quality Assurance in higher education as a lean tool on the research culture and research performance of lecturers at Indonesia’s private HEIs. The data represent respondents’ perceptions of the research variable indicators. 184 questionnaires were suitable for processing. Data were collected from 184 lecturers from approximately 25 private HEIs in Jakarta, Indonesia. A 5-point Likert scale was used to measure indicators of research variables. Statistical data analysis was carried out using Structural Equation Modeling with the Smart-PLS ™ program. The results show that Quality Assurance as a lean tool has a significant impact on research performance (β = 0.643; p = 0.000) and research culture (β = 0.361; p = 0.000). Research culture affected research performance significantly (β = 0.281; p = 0.000), and research culture significantly mediates the effect of Quality Assurance as a lean tool on the research performance (β = 0.102; p = 0.010), and the effect is strong (Ѵ = 0.181). Research findings reveal that the successful implementation of Quality Assurance as a lean tool is determined more by organizational readiness than individual readiness; this is reflected in the existence of effective research centers. An effective research center will support the standardization of research processes through continuous improvement so that lecturers behave more actively in scientific activities and perform research more productively.

This study overviews the English as a foreign language (EFL) lecturers’ language power bases in the high-context culture of Toraja. The writer applied a qualitative study method with a case study design. The writer applied purposive sampling and the subjects of this study are three EFL lecturers. The writer got the data through video observation and interviews. The data analysis technique used is using transcription and coding. It is revealed that the characteristics of lecturers’ behaviors and communication strategies associated with the five bases of power-referent power, coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, and expert power-were observed in the high context culture of Toraja, a common cultural practice among the Toraja learners. Referent power was evident when the lecturer was able to establish a connection with the learners based on shared cultural norms. Coercive power was demonstrated when the lecturer used guilt to pressure learners who were unwilling to do a class presentation. Reward power was characterized by the lecturer providing incentives to learners who complied with requests. Legitimate power was observed when the lecturer maintained strict control over the classroom. Additionally, expert power was identified when the lecturer shared their knowledge and expertise in addressing gaps in the study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AI-based (artificial intelligence) software utilization is increasingly widespread, including in education. On the one hand, AI-based software offers advantages for producing quality writing, such as converting voice into text, summarizing paragraphs, and improving grammar. There are pros and cons to each argument. Interestingly, permission or prohibition on using software is only for students, not lecturers. Moreover, lecturers should write quality scientific articles productively so that AI-based software can facilitate writing. Therefore, this research explores the driving and inhibiting factors that are thought to influence the use of AI-based software to assist lecturers in writing scientific articles. Following its goals, this research identified the potential factors through six hypotheses and tested them using PLS-SEM. This research recruited 110 lecturers in Indonesia as respondents to express their quantitative perceptions. It found that Product Quality (QLT) and Security (SEC) factors influence lecturers' use of AI-based software in scientific writing. However, four other variables (Motivation/MOT, Supporting Ability/SUP, Subjective Norms/NOR, and Individual Ability/ABL) had no influence. The finding exposed software quality has a vital role in engaging lecturers' intention to use AI-based software considering its characteristics to satisfy their needs: usefulness, easiness, accuracy, and efficiency. Also, lecturers are concerned with information security since AI-based software captures personal data, including user behavior during its usage. This research promotes practical implications for universities to regulate AI-based software, considering its benefits have been recognized by lecturers. However, its misuse can lead to the university's credibility in research and should be mitigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While previous research has extensively explored the ways writers project themselves into discourse and engage with readers across various written genres, limited attention has been given to understanding how university lecturers express their stance, i.e., expression of positioning and commitment towards propositions and students. To address this gap, this study proposes a functional framework for analyzing stance features in academic lectures using 160 lecture transcripts from four broad disciplinary divisions: arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and medical sciences. The analysis focuses on the extent and manner in which lecturers position themselves in discourse to steer students towards their intended interpretations. The findings indicate that lecturers, regardless of their disciplinary background, express their stance through seven distinct functions, including evaluating their level of commitment, posing questions, interacting with the audience, indicating obligations, emphasizing topics, initiating discourse, and previewing exam-related content. The findings have significant pedagogical implications, especially for educators and EAP practitioners seeking to improve lecture comprehension and engagement among students. Understanding how lecturers use language to interact with students and structure academic discourse can empower teachers to adopt similar stances for guiding students in engaging with course materials. Corporate norms and values, characterised by an enterprise ethos, became the new parameters that defined the academic environment. Academics are increasingly becoming concerned about the commodification of higher education and its impact on academic quality and the standards of quality graduates. The voices of South African academics and their experiences within the neoliberal university governance remain underexplored in the current literature. This study aimed to enhance understanding and contribute to knowledge by exploring lecturers’ experiences within a corporatised academic work environment. This study took place across public and private higher education institutions in South Africa. A cross-sectional, qualitative, interpretative phenomenological research design was employed. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews with a diverse sample of 20 lecturers. The data analysis followed the principles of interpretative phenomenological analysis. The findings of the study identified three key areas that triggered feelings of frustration with management: (1) participants experienced a lack of management’s understanding of governing academic work environments, (2) an erosion of their collegial culture, and (3) a lack of transparent communication. Contribution: A key contribution of this study, which set it apart from other studies, was lecturers’ perceptions that their professional identity, collegiality, autonomy, and academic freedom were in crisis.

The German system of higher education and public research is characterized by a high rate of temporary contracts with short contract durations and a nearly complete absence of structured career options. About 82% of employees not holding a full professorship have fixed-term contracts, with an average contract period of 20 months. This is facilitated by a special fixed-term employment law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) which universities and other public research institutions have stretched to its limits. Against the background of a survey which we conducted in 2021 and whose results once more demonstrate the shortcomings of this system, we discuss alternative options in the form of model calculations. We propose a reform of employment structures and career paths that could improve not only personal working conditions but also ensure the quality of research and teaching in German academia. By quantitative comparison with the current employment situation, our model calculation demonstrates that plannable career decisions can be enabled at an early stage without changing budgets or teaching duties. We also show that the counter argument of a "congestion" of positions is not substantiated, and that young scholars will still have the opportunity to start a career in the reformed system, while the total number of employees can be kept nearly constant. 20. The Phenomenon of Lecturer Competences as a Prerequisite for the Advancement of Sustainable Development Ideas in the Context of Student-Centred Studies.

- Abstract
Research and higher education regulations have been shaping attitudes not only towards the higher education lecturer as a professional in the field who is able to use educational tools but also towards the interfaces between lecturers and students. In this lecturer–student interaction, the students' own perception of the qualities of the lecturer's personality and/or possessed competences that are acceptable to them and that motivate them to participate in the learning process should be emphasised as an important aspect of success. Thus, the article raises the following problem questions: (1) What competences should a lecturer have from the students' point of view to achieve student-centred studies? (2) What is the relationship between the competences of the lecturer and the implementation of sustainable development ideas in the organisation of student-centred studies? This article is based on a 2019 survey conducted among Lithuanian university and college students, employing a questionnaire survey with a survey instrument that included open-ended questions. The survey was conducted with a sample of 390 participants. In addressing the issue at hand, it becomes evident that, from the students' perspective, the personality of the lecturer possesses a multidimensional character. They not only value the lecturer's expertise in the subject matter taught (subject competence) but also place a stronger emphasis on two other aspects. First, they value the lecturer's ability to motivate and engage students in the learning process (educational competence), which includes an essential component: communication competence. Second, the lecturer's personality acquires meaning through fundamental human values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has shown that humor can have an impact on people's interpersonal relationships and the way they are perceived by others. In addition, it has been suggested that use of humor by teachers can be positive, but also negative. The aim of the research was to examine students' perceptions of lecturers described as using different 'humor styles.' Using an online study, a sample of undergraduate students (n = 201) were presented with one of 20 vignettes of a male or female lecturer using a particular style of humor (affiliative, aggressive, self-defeating, self-enhancing) or no humor, while they were teaching content described as 'easy' or 'challenging.' They responded to questions to assess: approachability of the lecturer, feelings of engagement, perceptions of the learning environment, and general perceptions of the lecturer. It was found that a lecturer using aggressive humor was perceived more negatively compared to when using the other humor styles, and that the adaptive styles of humor (particularly affiliative) had a positive impact on student perceptions, compared to when no humor was used. Self-defeating humor was perceived more positively compared to aggressive humor, but, unexpectedly, no differently to the other styles of humor. The findings will add to the growing literature on the use of humor in an educational context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beyond physical characteristics, a person’s image symbolizes their personality, making it an essential aspect of their character and individuality. Ultimately, a person’s image shapes how others perceive them, making it an effective tool in building relationships. For lecturers, their image is a perception that carries an emotional tone and is shaped by the opinions of their students, colleagues, and the broader social environment. The qualities that make a lecturer exceptional are closely linked to the attributes that people associate with them when forming their image. The dressing style of modern art university lecturers is a multifaceted aspect that goes beyond mere attire. This research aims to explore how the dressing style serves as a means of highlighting the identity and individuality of these educators and to understand its influence on students in an academic context. Currently, organizational affective commitment is still one of the important issues in higher education. The issue of affective commitment in universities, especially in private universities, especially those based on certain religious values is still open. Previous research has shown that affective commitment can be explained in a variety of ways according to the context of the theoretical approach, cultural context and type of organization. Research exploring the role of psycap and authentic leadership in relation to affective commitment in the APTIK (Association of Catholic Colleges) environment could be one alternative. With a personal approach and value in mind, authentic psychology and leadership can be placed as important issues in influencing affective commitment. In today's complex and fast-moving organizations, affective commitment behavior is critical to organizational success. Psycap and authentic leadership proved to be strong predictors of affective commitment, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to examine the effect of psycap on the affective commitment of lecturers, where authentic leadership as the mediator. This research is a quantitative research involving 401 lecturers in Indonesia as research subjects. The results of this study show that authentic leadership partially mediates the influence of psycap on the affective commitment of APTIK lecturers. Increasing psycap will increase affective commitment both directly and through increasing the authentic leadership of lecturers. The results of this research can be used by government managers and universities as consideration for evaluating development policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study intends to ascertain how private university lecturers in North Sulawesi understand digitalization in order to enhance their performance. The performance of private university professors will improve with knowledge of the servant leadership philosophy. This study focused on North Sulawesi-based private university lecturers. Purposive sampling is used to support the descriptive research methodology. In this study, the participants were professors at private universities in North Sulawesi. Thirty PTS lecturers in North Sulawesi who were known to be PTS teachers had their samples collected. The findings demonstrated a favourable correlation between lecturers' participation and their comprehension of digitalization in education. However, the lack of PTS leaders' involvement in providing their staff with opportunities for growth, encouragement, trust, and service undermines their potential, sense of pride, and capacity to uphold the tridharma of higher education. The organisational culture's value alignment does not promote the best teaching, volunteerism, or research in fields like community pride. Lack of leadership and a culture that supports the role of self-efficacy and work spirituality as performance intervenors are the root causes of the failure to carry out education and teaching, research, and community service. - Abstract
Purpose: There are two objectives in this study. First, testing the relationship between person-organization fit (P-O fit) and person-job fit (P-J fit) on turnover intentions. Second, examining the moderating role of kinship on the relationship between P-O fit and P-J fit on turnover intentions. Design/methodology/approach: This research was conducted at private universities in Lampung with a total of 282 respondents. The analytical method used to test the research hypothesis was moderated regression analysis (MRA) Findings: There are five proposed hypotheses, and all of them are supported. The findings of this study reveal that P-O fit and P-J fit are predictors that are negatively related to turnover intentions. Furthermore, kinship moderates the relationship between P-O fit and P-J fit on turnover intentions. Research limitations/implications: This study adds to the literature on turnover intentions in universities and underscores some important advances and contributions in developing a human resource management theory related to social capital. Based on the findings of this study, organizations are expected to pay more attention to P-O fit, P-J fit and kinship to reduce the level of turnover intentions. Employers are expected to choose people who match the organization's values and work and create interpersonal relationships between them to reduce turnover intentions, which mean the findings extend the theory of attraction-selection-attrition (ASA), social exchange and social capital. These findings provide theoretical and pragmatic insights for human resource management practitioners and relevant stakeholders. Practical implications: Practically, the concepts of P-O fit and P-J fit are important to be considered by the leadership because creating a suitable environment for employees will trigger positive behaviors. Leaders must find the right people for the environment and the right environment for the employees. Furthermore, this study has implications for a relational approach to overcoming turnover intentions in the workplace. The relational approach is in the form of kinship. Organizations that encourage opportunities for social interaction among members can reduce employee turnover and tend to create positive social capital. Social implications: In social practice, kinship connects people in an organization. The existence of kinship in an organization helps academicians get relational and emotional support from coworkers and superiors so that they will feel a family relationship that may not be found in other organizations, which eventually reduces turnover intentions. Originality/value: The originality of this study lies in investigating the moderating role of kinship on the relationship between P-O fit and turnover intentions. Kinship in this study is different from research in general. "Kinship" here is based on a kinship perspective because of the peculiarities of Asian culture, especially in Indonesia, namely kinship without blood relations and marriage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We also show that the counter argument of a “congestion” of positions is not substantiated, and that young scholars will still have the opportunity to start a career in the reformed system, while the total number of employees can be kept nearly constant.

This study aims to analyze strategies universities can use to develop appropriate digital competencies for economics, business, and accounting lecturers and also provides an overview of the framework. This study employed a narrative literature review method with a qualitative approach consisting of several steps: compilation, tabulation, research result comparison, and summarization. The literature sources were the related articles dated within the last 15 years (2009-2023) acquired from reputable international journal sites (Emerald, Elsevier, Springer, Routledge, and MDPI). Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. The results of this study showed that some existing frameworks in the world rarely include digital ethics dimensions. The digital competency framework for accounting lecturers consists of several elements, including the capacity to use digital sources, assessments, teaching and learning processes, as well as empowering digital literacy for students, small and medium-sized enterprises' people (UMKM), and also now BUMDES' people as well. Strategies that can be carried out by universities in developing human capital for lecturers of economics, business, and accounting in digital competence are by approaching the human capital component through university policies, providing organizational infrastructure and culture (Organization Climate), strategic leadership, or currently being able to adopt digital leadership (leadership component), and various training according to the needs and areas of expertise of lecturers.
