The pandemic placed extraordinary demands on agricultural producers and created unexpected challenges for southern Missouri farmers, and pushed the University of Missouri Extension (MUE) to implement new and innovative approaches to help farmers persevere through the crisis. In surveys and reports, farmers have indicated several changes caused by the pandemic that impact their businesses, such as increase in local food demand, reduction in on-farm labor, and limitations on hosting on-farm visits with customers. The MUE StrikeForce project team, a U.S. Department of Agriculture strategic initiative, continued to serve farmers by developing alternative educational opportunities that incorporated social distancing and other preventative actions, and were of immediate use to farmers in a crisis. Several of the educational approaches, including video conferencing, online teaching, digital recordings, video repositories, social media communications, pick up and drop off locations, and the use of multiple online viewing platforms such as Zoom recordings have proven to be effective in helping farmers sustain their businesses and have substantially increased access to programming across the state. The convenience of accessing education and learning opportunities online also appealed to more participants. Overall, online educational delivery was positively received by producers, demonstrating the efficacy of digital learning when paired with offline resources and support from the StrikeForce project team. After the pandemic ends, MUE will continue to implement these approaches. Nevertheless, the traditional Extension approach of one-on-one consulting and farm visits cannot be completely replaced by online educational programming. The pandemic has highlighted inequities faced by many rural Missouri farmers that lack dependable internet or cell phone network access, and had no access to StrikeForce programming when face-to-face visits were paused.

The Cass Clay Food Partners is a network of professionals, stakeholders, and residents serving Cass County, North Dakota, and Clay County, Minnesota, in creating a healthier, more just local food system. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cass Clay Food Partners quickly implemented a multipronged response that leveraged three critical assets of our network: (1) our unique structure, (2) our nuanced understanding of the social ties across overlapping networks, and (3) our ability to quickly pivot our work to address community needs. In this paper, we describe how our network re­sponded to both the challenges and opportunities presented to our food system by the COVID-19 crisis. We also provide tools and recommendations for other food policy and food network practitioners.

First paragraph: Garth and Reese’s edited volume Black Food Matters paints a vivid picture of the evolution of Black food culture as it negotiates the socio-cultural and political complexities surrounding food and race in America. This work centers around the manifestation of Black food in all its stages, from seed to plate, recognizing that it is both a reflection of the lived experiences of Black people in America and an outright rejection of the harm inflicted on them through a persistently anti-Black structural context. The authors trace the resistance and sur­vival praxis of Black food culture from its earliest origins in the practices of slaves on the Middle Passage to the contemporary practices of local-food–based economies in Black urban and rural communities across the nation. In doing so, each of the authors highlights the ongoing threat that racial capitalism poses to the cultural integrity and socio-economic sustainability of Black com­muni­ties. Readers are able to draw valuable com­parisons between the past and present as they see how Black alimentary and economic autarky have consistently been met with multifaceted exploita­tion by mainstream, white-dominated society. And yet, the stories told by the book’s authors are ones of resilience and dignity, highlighting the innova­tion, adaptability, and forti­tude of Black people, as reflected in both African-American and Afro-diasporic food culture. . . .

While the food justice movement was initially asso¬ciated with increasing availability of fresh produce in low-income communities of color through insti¬tutions such as farmers markets, scholars have cri¬tiqued this as imposing a right way of eating. Food justice scholarship has moved away from a focus on healthy eating toward a focus on community economic development, as food enterprises can stimulate job creation. This paper investigates the dual goals of the food justice movement through a case study in San Diego. While food justice has moved beyond promoting a love of produce and is increasingly oriented toward good jobs, for the urban gardeners in this study, the movement is still a lot about vegetables. They see food as medicine, and note the health benefits of moving toward a plant-based diet. Yet, they are reluctant to push this way of eating on others, as they do not want to come across as elitist. Instead, they spread aware¬ness that plant-based diets are an African tradition that should not just be associated with rich white folks. Rather than leading with nutrition, they lead with tradition, taste, and buying Black. To encour¬age consumption of vegetables, they aim to in¬crease the supply of prepared food options in the community, and to market dishes as delicious rather than healthy, all the while supporting Black food entrepreneurs. When selling produce direct to the consumer through farmers markets does not achieve their vision of promoting health or sup¬porting livelihoods, they re-imagine a strategy of promoting food justice through a neighborhood food supply chain.

Local food production (LFP) can play an impor­tant role in ensuring access to food during supply chain disruptions. Because the drafting, adoption, and implementation of policies regulating LFP is under the purview of local governments in many U.S. states, researchers at University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Exten­sion conducted a study to assess whether COVID-19 affected local government stakeholders’ (LGS) (N=92) perspectives on LFP and the role that LFP can play in responding to public health emergen­cies. LGS who oversee the drafting, adoption, and implementation of LFP policies include staff responsible for code enforcement, sustainability initiatives, and planning, as well as elected and ap­pointed leaders, such as mayors, city and county managers, and city and county commissioners. The survey assessed LGS’ attitudes and knowledge about LFP. The survey also asked LGS about their perceptions and awareness of LFP in their commu­nities, including their perceptions of the benefits of and barriers to LFP and the ways in which LFP producers were using the food they produced. Sur­vey questions also focused specifically on COVID-19 and the role of LFP in public health emergen­cies. In particular, survey questions asked whether LGS perceived a change in their own attitudes, knowledge, and perspectives; whether there had been a change in the LFP activi­ties in their communities following COVID-19; and what they thought the role of LFP was in responding to public health emergencies. Direct comparisons of LGS who responded to a 2019 survey (N=43) were assessed for statistically sig­nificant changes in overall attitudes, knowledge, or perceived benefits of LFP following COVID-19. This study found that LGS have generally positive attitudes and perceptions of benefits of LFP, including its role in public health emergencies, but have limited knowledge about LFP or awareness of barriers to its implementation. The results of this study indicate that LGS understand the potential benefits of LFP in public health emergencies but would benefit from information and training to support the development of policies and programs in their communities.

Community food security and food systems resili­ence have received much emphasis in the last two decades, at least partially in response to mounting challenges and pressures on the global food system. While empirical research shows strong evidence that direct-to-consumer relationships in the food system predominantly serve affluent commu­nities, during the COVID-19 pandemic local food providers have become a necessity through their provision of essential services, such as hunger relief and home deliveries for vulnerable populations. In this paper, we examine the challenges and opportunities of food hubs—innovations in local food systems that help connect small farmers with local markets—during the COVID-19 pandemic using quantitative and qualitative data from practitioners on the ground. The hubs were not necessarily equipped or experienced in the response needed, but they quickly adapted to the situation and demonstrated success during the pandemic, as illustrated by 200–300% growth in performance metrics such as revenues generated, employees retained, customers served, and farmers supported. The performance of the hubs in response to the multiple challenges accompanying the pandemic demonstrates their key role in food system resilience through features of diversity, functional redundancy, and connectivity, suggesting that disaster preparation should consider local food hubs a necessary service. We provide policy suggestions for supporting their role in local food system resilience beyond the pandemic.

COVID-19 has highlighted the dynamic relationship between pandemic threats and global food systems. Despite important connections, research and policy-making on food systems and pandemics largely operate in silos. We propose a framework that integrates food systems and pandemic planning and response, exploring the role of the food system in shaping pandemics and, consequently, the role of pandemics in disrupting a now global food system. This framework highlights important connections between food production, distribution, and consumption at each stage of the pandemic cycle: preven­tion, response, and recovery. We use recent experiences with COVID-19 to illustrate vulnerabilities in systems interaction during the prevention and response phases. Over the long term, in the recovery phase, food systems must transform, adopting an enhanced level of functioning to improve resilience. To reduce population health risks and promote sustainable food systems, we call for implementation of surveillance systems for both emerging infections and food systems functioning in order to strengthen global food supply chains, create stakeholder resource coordination mechanisms, and address underlying socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Multidisciplinary global actors should draw on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent the inevitable next one.

Today many parties interact with members and supporters outside their national borders. One way parties do so is by establishing transnational party branches. However so far, there is a lack of theoretical and empirical research exploring this transnational aspect of party activity. This paper provides a first insight into why parties develop transnational branches, and how it affects their organization. It argues that the development of party branches abroad differs across countries due to the incentives provided by the national legal framework on voting and donations from abroad. In turn, the role and functions of the transnational branches vary depending on this legal framework. Looking at the two transnational branches of the two mainstream parties in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, this paper first briefly outlines the different national legal frameworks and the scope and size of transnational party branches. It then focuses on how they are organized, their role and function, and how this shapes their relationship to their homeland party. This explorative research is mainly based on legal and secondary data. The paper finds that the parties studied differ substantially in location, number and membership size for their transnational branches. Furthermore, the organizational links and the control by the national party over transnational party branches is the highest where parties have the most to gain in terms of votes in national elections and donations.

Although migration has long been an imperative topic in social sciences, there are still needs of study on migrants’ unique and dynamic transnational identity, which heavily influences the social integration in the host society. In Online Social Network (OSN), where the contemporary migrants actively communicate and share their stories the most, different challenges against migrants’ belonging and identity and how they cope or reconcile may evidently exist. This paper aims to scrutinise how migrants are manifesting their belonging and identity via different technological types of online social networks, to understand the relations between online social networks and migrants’ multi-faceted transnational identity. The research introduces a comparative case study on an online social movement led by Koreans in Germany via their online communities, triggered by a German TV advertisement considered as stereotyping East Asians given by white supremacy’s point of view. Starting with virtual ethnography on three OSNs representing each of internet generations (Web 1.0 ~ Web 3.0), two-step Qualitative Data Analysis is carried out to examine how Korean migrants manifest their belonging and identity via their views on “who we are” and “who are others”. The analysis reveals how Korean migrants’ transnational identities differ by their expectation on the audience and the members in each online social network, which indicates that the distinctive features of the online platform may encourage or discourage them in shaping transnational identity as a group identity. The paper concludes with the two main emphases: first, current OSNs comprising different generational technologies play a significant role in understanding the migrants’ dynamic social values, and particularly, transnational identities. Second, the dynamics of migrants’ transnational identity engages diverse social and situational contexts. In a world where increased prosperity has created a number of novel, ecosystem-related threats to people’s health and the economy, designing with nature offers a promising outlook to mute the potential negative impacts of our actions and to keep improving the quality of life worldwide. It also provides an alternative to an attitude that has been largely negligent towards our non-human fellow beings. Drawing from the experience of DS landscape architects, four actualized projects and two student master theses illustrate the challenges, opportunities and benefits that building with nature presents. These cases highlight four important lessons for designing with nature in rural and urban landscapes. First, considering the surrounding landscape as a starting point creates a deeper understanding of the situation at hand. This allows for better planning with the ecosystem and enhances the richness of its biodiversity once a project is delivered. Secondly, planning with nature creates the opportunity to let nature do some of the work. This can include water purification, drainage, and cooling. The third lesson is that designing with nature requires a long-term plan. Maintenance might be necessary, and the public may need to be patient to watch the ecosystem slowly flourish through the decades. Finally, creating a new kind of wilderness-imbued beauty to inspire public acceptance and to motivate stewardship is a promising method for establishing a successful long-term nature-inclusive design project. These and other lessons contribute to a field of design where incorporating nature is the status quo.

This publication offers an overview of the latest cross-disciplinary developments in the field of Building with Nature (BwN) for the protection of coastal regions. The key philosophy of BwN is the employment of natural processes to serve societal goals, such as flood safety. The starting point is a systems-based approach, making interventions that employ the shaping forces of the natural system to perform measures by self-regulation. Initial pilots of this innovative approach originate from coastal engineering, with the Sand Motor along the coast of South Holland as one of the prime examples. From here, the BwN approach has evolved into a new generation of nature-based hydraulic solutions, such as mangrove forests, coastal reefs, and green dikes.

First paragraph: As a leader in Atlanta’s fresh produce supply chain for people with limited access to fruits and vegetables, Concrete Jungle (CJ) has established a robust network of partnerships with food and social service community organizations to support Atlanta’s food-insecure population. Founded in 2009, CJ is an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization that coordinates approximately 1,700 volunteers annually to pick produce within the city and across Georgia and delivers it to community food distribution partners. CJ staff and volunteers also lead healthy food recipe demonstrations. To date, CJ has picked 158,292 pounds (633,169 servings) of produce within Atlanta and across Georgia. . . .

This article analyses how border guards as members of a state organisation shape the movement of non-nationals into the territory of a nation state. Based on ethnographic fieldwork on the Swiss Border Guard (SBG), it explores the rationalities—understood as stabilised ways of reasoning and acting—that characterise practices within this state organisation. Combining organisational and structuration theory with a street-level bureaucracy perspective allows for a differentiated analysis of the various facets of border guards’ everyday work. Four rationalities of border-control practices are identified and compared: security, humanitarian, cost-calculation, and pragmatic rationality. I argue that, by considering both the specific goals and imperatives of border control and the characteristics of street-level bureaucrats acting within a state organisation, these entangled logics explain the complex and incoherent social reality of border control. More generally, the results contribute to organisational theory by pointing to the importance of taking into account that multiple entangled rationalities structure the practices of an organisation’s members.

Environmental interpretation is a tool that helps in understanding the landscape and its elements, frequently used in protected areas (PA) to sensitize visitors. In order to improve environmental interpretation and promote bird watching in the Campos Gerais National Park, this paper aims to discuss the importance of interpretative means to achieve the objectives of the PA, presenting a proposal for a panel and a folder of the present avifauna. For this, besides the bibliographical research and experts consulting, we carried out field visits. It is concluded that the proposed tools could improve the interpretation/identification, as well as in the promotion of sustainable tourism potentially in the conservation of birdlife.

This article seeks to understand a common and regular feature of asylum decision-making, namely, that the majority of asylum claims are rejected, mostly on the basis of non-credibility. It draws on a bottom-up, qualitative study of an administration in which asylum decision-making takes place: the Swiss Secretariat for Migration. By adopting a practice-theoretical approach to administrative work, it advocates paying attention to caseworkers’ routinised, self-evident and largely unquestioned behaviours, not only in terms of what they do, but also of what they think, feel and know. Building on Bourdieu, it introduces the concept of institutional habitus, which refers to the dispositions caseworkers develop on the job. On the basis of a specific decision-making practice termed ‘digging deep’, the article shows how these dispositions are structured and how, through the practices institutional habitus generates, these ‘structuring structures’ are continuously reaffirmed, leading to the relatively stable outcomes of administrative decision-making that can be observed from the outside. The article argues against the assumption that regularities of administrative work should be understood as the outcome of strict rule-following, top-down orders and political instrumentalism. At the same time, it challenges the individualist quality sometimes ascribed to discretionary practices in street-level bureaucracy literature and in critiques of credibility assessment practices in asylum adjudication.

Among the three pillars of sustainability, social sustainability has received the least attention, especially among the studies addressing the sustainable housing development in Dubai’s urban neighborhoods. Unfortunately, these neighborhoods are not showing enough vibrancy of their public spaces and amenities which seemingly undermined their social sustainability. The lack of a comprehensive tool that can assess the interlinked indicators of social sustainability in urban neighborhoods has urged the research to propose an Integrated Measuring Tools Method (IMTM), that incorporates relevant computational simulation techniques alongside the appropriate conventional qualitative tools. The proposed IMTM was utilized in assessing the social sustainability indicators within the urban form of an existing neighborhood in Dubai. The assessment revealed that various urban form characteristics including; density, land-use, mobility options, mobility networks, streets layouts, and the built environment’s safety and aesthetic qualities, are the main factors undermining social sustainability in the studied locality. The results informed a set of suggested redevelopment strategies/guidelines for this neighborhood that takes into consideration the exiting constraints and opportunities. These included; increasing density by infill development, redefining land-use to achieve diversity in housing types and decentralized amenities, diversifying mobility options, improving the spatial integration of the mobility networks while restraining the private cars movement, improving accessibility, enriching urban landscape, and finally enhancing the quality of amenities and services. A social sustainability redevelopment scenario was suggested based on these strategies. When compared to the exiting neighborhood utilizing the IMTM, it proved significantly better attainment of social sustainability principles. So, it might be claimed that the proposed IMTM and its outcomes proved to be a valid basis for assessing, redeveloping and validating social sustainability of existing neighborhoods with similar typology in Dubai, and potentially in the region.

RESUMEN: Los edificios KPD son construcciones habitacionales sencillas y discretas, pero emblemáticas en Chile. Su recorrido histórico por este país inicia con un terremoto y se entrelaza con los antagónicos gobiernos de Salvador Allende y Augusto Pinochet. Estas construcciones han permanecido ajenas a las actualizaciones de la reglamentación térmica, pasando a formar parte del extenso parque habitacional construido que necesita ser diagnosticado energéticamente, para alinearlo a las exigencias térmicas nacionales y, de ese modo, mejorar la calidad de vida de sus habitantes y aportar a la carbono-neutralidad ya comprometida por Chile. Este artículo presenta un estudio de caso de evaluación de confort térmico en un conjunto habitacional de edificios KPD, ubicado en la Región Metropolitana. En concreto, se analizan cuatro edificios, idénticos en materialidad y distribución, pero con diferentes orientaciones. La metodología de evaluación consideró un triple enfoque: normativo, de etiquetado y subjetivo; e involucra a los habitantes en el diagnóstico, quienes constante e inexplicablemente, han quedado marginados en el análisis de sus propias viviendas. Los resultados del estudio han evidenciado discrepancias entre la percepción de los residentes y el rango de confort que utiliza la calificación energética nacional vigente.

En este trabajo se presenta la evaluación del impacto ambiental y la resistencia a compresión deBloques de Tierra Comprimida (BTC) estabilizados con cal aérea hidratada y cemento Portland.Para esa labor, se fabricaron 12 series de bloques estabilizados con diferentes proporciones decal y cemento y se empleó la metodología del Análisis de Ciclo de Vida (ACV). Tras la realizaciónde los ensayos y las simulaciones pudo concluirse que, usando suelos y arena característicos de laciudad de Santa Fe (Argentina), estabilizados con determinados porcentajes de cemento Portland-comprendidos entre el 5 y el 10% en peso- pueden producirse BTC con niveles de resistenciasuficientes para ser utilizados en muros de carga y, de esa forma, minimizar el impacto ambientalnegativo asociado a su fabricación. Se concluye, además, que la estabilización con cal aéreano incrementa la resistencia a compresión de los BTC y aumenta, por el contrario, de manerasignificativa el impacto negativo de éstos sobre el medio ambiente. This work presents the evaluation of the environmental impact and compressive strength of Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB) stabilized with hydrated aerial lime and Portland cement. For this, 12 series of blocks stabilized with different proportions of lime and cement were manufactured and the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology was used. After conducting these assays and simulations, it could be concluded that, using earth and sand typical of the city of Santa Fe (Argentina), stabilized with certain percentages of Portland cement between 5 and 10% in weight, CEB can be produced with sufficient levels of strength for them to be used in load-bearing walls, in this way minimizing the negative environmental impact associated with their manufacturing. It is also concluded that the stabilization with aerial lime does not increase the CEB’s compressive strength and, on the contrary, significantly increases their negative impact on the environment. RESUMEN: Los edificios históricos constituyen parte fundamental del patrimonio cultural tangible de la sociedad actual. El cumplimiento de las exigencias de ahorro energético para mitigar el cambio climático, sin embargo, puede verse limitado aquí debido a las características propias de estos edificios. Además, en el caso de las construcciones históricas, los principios de diseño bioclimático aplicados por los arquitectos, desde principios del siglo XX hasta la actualidad, pueden haber perdido efectividad. Ello ocurre, a veces, por las modificaciones en proyecto o por efectos del desarrollo urbanístico. En este estudio se analizan estos dos aspectos en un determinado edificio histórico ubicado en Sevilla: la Casa Duclós de José Luis Sert. Este presenta modificaciones en la cubierta, cuando se compara la proyectada y la construida. Asimismo, su entorno urbano se ha transformado desde que la Casa fue edificada. Para el análisis expuesto en este artículo, se realizaron simulaciones energéticas utilizando datos climáticos correspondientes al periodo 2000-2019. Los resultados muestran la influencia que tuvieron las modificaciones de la cubierta proyectada y la expansión urbanística en el rendimiento energético del edificio, con respecto a la concepción original del inmueble.

Schrebergartens are named for Dr. Moritz Schreber, a Leipzig University professor who specialized in pediatric health. He is infamous for advocating that children strictly obey adults, but he also suggested that city children should have access to fresh air and green space. Schrebergartens are similar in some respects to the Russian dacha, often including “tiny houses,” raised beds, perennials—and lots of garden gnomes. Entire colonies of Schrebergartens have been established since WWII. . . .

Ran-Lew Dairy quickly adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many grocers suddenly faced shortages due to disruptions in their supply chains. Ran-Lew expanded into the direct retail market and increased its in-store sales to stay viable. Due to its small scale, vertical integration, and community connections, it was able to pivot models and react rapidly to the changing needs of its community. This case study highlights the importance of small-scale producers in developing food system resilience.

Territorialität und Prozesse der Deterritorialisierung waren noch nie so relevant wie jetzt, im Kampf gegen die Ausbreitung des Virus.

Along the U.S. West Coast, sustainable manage­ment has rebuilt fish stocks, providing an oppor­tunity to supply nutrient-rich food to adjacent coastal communities where food insecurity and diet-based diseases are common. However, the market has not successfully supplied locally sourced seafood to nutritionally vulnerable people. Rather, a few organizations make this connection on a limited scale. We used a “positive deviant” approach to learn how these organizations’ efforts developed, how they overcame challenges, and what conditions enabled their interventions. We found that organizations in these positive deviant cases provided fish from a wide variety of species and sources, and distributed them through different channels to a diversity of end consumers. A key factor facilitating success was the ability to negotiate a price point that was both profitable and reasonable for organizations supplying nutritionally vulnerable or low-income consumers. Further­more, securing access to grants overcame initial costs of establishing new supply channels. All cases highlighted the importance of individual cham­pi­ons who encouraged development and cultural connections between the initiative and the nearby community. Organizations overcame key chal­lenges by establishing regulations governing these new channels and either using partnerships or vertically integrating to reduce costs associated with processing and transport. Oftentimes training and education were also critical to instruct workers on how to process unfamiliar fish and to increase consumer awareness of local fish and how to pre­pare them. These lessons illuminate pathways to improve the contribution of local seafood to the healthy food system.

Food equity includes the right to food that is cul­turally appropriate. Immigrant neighborhoods can be sites of contestation over who participates in the production, distribution, and consumption of food. Manhattan’s Chinatown is a good example of a neighborhood where food is central to its com­merce, cultural heritage, and reputation as a tourist destination. The coronavirus’ origin in China caused imme­diate material impact on Chinese restaurants and food purveyors in New York City as well as in other cities with major populations of Chinese people. Chinatown suffered disproportionate closures of its grocery stores, restaurants, and produce vendors due to COVID-19 as compared to other neighbor­hoods in NYC. The grassroots response to this crisis is a reminder that people have the power to use food to assert the society that they desire, to shape a highly contested urban space, and to claim their right to the city.

The successful Brexit referendum and the election of Trump in 2016 mark the breakthrough of populism in the West. Opposition to immigration has been central to both events. However, it has been central in different ways. This paper maps these differences and the implications of both populisms for a liberal immigration policy. Driven by hostility to free mobility within the EU, the ironic consequence of Brexit will be an immigration policy that is less discriminatory than previously, in the sense that favoritism for other Europeans is now ruled out. By contrast, Trump’s immigration policy is openly and brazenly discriminatory. In particular, its Muslim Ban breaches the “anti-populist norm” (Freeman 1995) and thus the essence of a liberal immigration policy.

In general, parental knowledge is known to support adolescents’ adaptation. Less is known about the role of parental knowledge in psychological (i.e., anxiety) and socio-cultural (i.e., school achievement) adaptation of adolescents with immigrant background, and how parental knowledge and social characteristics (i.e., gender, generational status, immigrant background, and family’ socioeconomic background) of immigrant adolescents jointly influence their adaptation outcomes. This study explores the role of adolescent-reported parental knowledge in explaining adaptation outcomes among first- and second-generation immigrant boys and girls from four different immigrant groups. The study utilizes the national Finnish School Health Promotion survey data (N = 2697, 45% female, M age = 15.6 years, SD = .91) and illustrates the complex relationship between parental knowledge and adolescents’ adaptation.

Siempre ha sido difícil definir qué es una ciudad y ahora lo es más porque el auge de los negocios inmobiliarios la ha tenido sometida a una transformación incesante, incluyendo sus áreas periurbanas. Con ello, también la segregación ha adquirido un estado de mutación constante y, de hecho, ya no parece estabilizarse, como en el pasado, en patrones espaciales reconocibles. Esto ha estado sucediendo en las ciudades chilenas, como en las de muchos otros países. Resulta comprensible, así, la tentación de sustituir las definiciones físico-geográficas y planimétricas, tanto de ciudad como de la segregación, por otras que enfatizan los procesos. ¿Quiere decir, entonces, que la dimensión físico-espacial de la ciudad carece de importancia como, implícita o explícitamente, argumentan los economistas neoliberales y los urbanistas apegados a enfoques estructural-deterministas? Es cierto que la pandemia del COVID19 hace evidentes las flaquezas de estos enfoques que desconsideran lo espacial, pero eso no resta relevancia al examen de su armado teórico, el que se abordará aquí con base en una revisión crítica de la literatura especializada y en testimonios de especialistas recogidos por un estudio sobre segregación en tres ciudades chilenas, del cual este artículo es resultado. Concluiremos estas páginas planteando la necesidad de reforzar la investigación empírica de la ciudad y la segregación, lo mismo que nuestra atención a sus dimensiones subjetivas.

Los humedales son ecosistemas que están desapareciendo, principalmente, a causa de la actividad urbana, industrial y de su vulnerabilidad ante los efectos del cambio climático. En Chile se han generado normativas e iniciativas para su protección, las que están condicionadas por las influencias, intereses e interrelaciones de los actores involucrados en el sistema de gobernanza. Esta investigación analizó el caso del humedal de la localidad de Pichicuy, actualmente administrado por la Municipalidad de La Ligua, e indagó en el rol de los gobiernos locales en la gobernanza para la protección de humedales considerando la participación de la red de actores de diferentes esferas y escalas territoriales. Se utilizaron, para tal labor, métodos mixtos de investigación social, analizando las influencias, intereses, tipos de relación y medidas de centralidad a partir del Análisis de Redes Sociales y la plataforma UCINET 6. El gobierno local de La Ligua desempeña, a través de su Departamento de Medio Ambiente, roles relevantes en la gobernanza para la protección del humedal: (1) propiciando apoyo político para gestionar e implementar acciones sobre el humedal; (2) actuando como intermediario entre los actores de diferentes esferas de la sociedad; y (3) liderando alianzas con actores de escalas superiores. Estos roles se robustecen por el apoyo y recursos proporcionados por los actores de la red con alto interés e influencia en la protección del humedal. No obstante, existen desafíos en la dinámica municipal, entre ellos, la necesidad de atraer e involucrar más fuertemente al Concejo Municipal, ya que tiene una alta influencia en las decisiones del gobierno local. Es relevante fortalecer la gobernanza para la protección de humedales en localidades pequeñas y rurales, para lo cual el gobierno local debe jugar un rol muy importante, por ejemplo, mediante el reconocimiento institucional del humedal y facilitando la participación de actores de escala local.

Las ciudades se caracterizan por ejercer una constante presión sobre el suelo periurbano rural. Las lógicas bajo las cuales opera el mercado inmobiliario y distintos otros agentes sumado a la flexibilidad de los instrumentos de planificación urbana que regulan el territorio, hace de los entornos urbanos espacios en permanente cambio. Temuco, una de las ciudades intermedias más importantes de Chile en cuanto al número de población, se ha desarrollado a partir de estas mismas lógicas. Sin embargo, y a diferencia de otras ciudades chilenas, la presencia de Áreas de Protección de Territorio Indígena (APTI), asociadas a comunidades mapuche, establece barreras legales que impiden el crecimiento convencional de la ciudad. De igual forma, es posible observar cómo en las últimas décadas, estas tierras han sido permeables a distintos usos, fuera de las dimensiones que supuestamente protege la ley. El presente trabajo explora los discursos de propietarios mapuche de suelo periurbano respecto a los cambios que estas áreas han experimentado en el último tiempo producto de la expansión de la ciudad. Para ello, se realizaron 20 entrevistas a propietarios mapuche de zonas periurbanas aledañas a Labranza, área urbana de Temuco, las cuales fueron analizadas bajo los parámetros de la Teoría Fundamentada. Entre los resultados obtenidos, destacan las estrategias de presión sobre este suelo provenientes de distintos agentes privados, la pérdida de sentido ancestral de la tierra por parte de algunas comunidades mapuche, que terminan vendiendo bajo distintos resquicios legales y la resistencia a la intromisión externa que aún persiste en mucho de ellos. Esto último evidencia que las estrategias de resistencia mapuche no sólo existen en territorios afectados por la intervención forestal, sino también en aquellos espacios que son tensionados por el rápido crecimiento de las ciudades.

Este trabajo explora la perspectiva de integración de los propósitos que persigue la promulgación de la reciente Política Nacional de Desarrollo Rural (PNDR) de Chile en los instrumentos de planificación a escala local de las comunas rurales en Chile. Para tal efecto, revisa, clasifica y analiza especialmente los contenidos de cada Plan de Desarrollo Comunal (PLADECO) de un total de 30 comunas rurales en el país. De norte a sur, los PLADECO de estas comunas rurales, se evalúan en función de sus contenidos, de acuerdo con sus fundamentos empíricos, objetivos, conceptos y gobernanza, así como en referencia a sus ámbitos predominantes en materia de desarrollo rural y su articulación con el marco normativo-institucional regional y sectorial. Los resultados aportan importante evidencia sobre la escasa proximidad que tienen los PLADECO vigentes de las comunas rurales con los contenidos de la PNDR (política que integra elementos de la nueva ruralidad y/o desarrollo rural territorial), especialmente desde el punto de vista de su vinculación con otros instrumentos de planificación normativos e indicativos, políticas sectoriales y de su articulación con actores institucionales.

Las caletas constituyen asentamientos costeros marcados por su vocación productiva ligada a la actividad pesquero-artesanal. En ellas surgen formas específicas de habitar que dan lugar a prácticas socioespaciales que producen y reproducen el espacio y que, en este documento, se conciben como “habitus socio-espacial” (Giglia, 2012). Actualmente, estos asentamientos y comunidades se han visto amenazados por el avance homogeneizador de la expansión urbana neoliberal. El artículo describe las características del habitus socio-espacial de Caleta El Morro de Talcahuano y sus expresiones durante y después del tsunami de 2010. La metodología incorpora técnicas cualitativas como la entrevista, revisión de material de archivo fotográfico, y cuantitativas, como revisión de estadísticas e instrumentos de planificación territorial. El análisis constituye una síntesis cartográfica e histórica de las prácticas socio-espaciales de la caleta, sus nudos y potencialidades para la preservación del asentamiento y su cultura. Los resultados evidencian que la caleta se posiciona como una frontera dentro del espacio urbano, una heterotopía (Lefebvre, 2013), que resiste las amenazas naturales y al espacio abstracto, caracterizado este último por la urbanización de carácter global que amenaza al borde costero regional y nacional.

Este artículo analiza e interpreta el crecimiento urbano reciente y los procesos de segregación socioespacial en la ciudad de Valdivia (Chile), y su relación con el avance del mercado inmobiliario. La ciudad, pese a su tamaño medio, crecimiento moderado y buenos indicadores de calidad de vida, estaría reproduciendo lógicas similares a otras urbes de mayor tamaño. Para el estudio, se aplica una metodología que combina datos estadísticos con entrevistas en profundidad a actores-clave, y se elabora, además, una matriz de restricciones que sintetiza espacialmente y por componentes la segregación existente. Como resultado, se identifican los sectores con mayor y menor crecimiento inmobiliario, ahondando en las formas y tipologías del mismo; así como la percepción de los fenómenos de segregación existentes en Valdivia. De esta manera, junto con un análisis que pone su énfasis en ciudades de menor tamaño y dinamismo, se generaría un aporte metodológico que podría ser aplicado a otros casos de estudio.

Los ejes viarios metropolitanos son espacios de centralidad urbana y de oportunidad para promover una mejor conectividad entre las distintas partes del continuo urbano. En este sentido, la caracterización funcional de seis ejes representativos en Madrid, Barcelona, París, Londres, Nueva York y Ciudad de México permite obtener un diagnóstico actual sobre la densidad y diversidad de actividades económicas y urbanas, con el fin identificar aspectos clave sobre los que incidir para mejorar su estructura funcional y social. Para ello, se propone un método que adopta los datos geolocalizados de la red social Google Places como principal fuente de información. De la investigación se deducen importantes similitudes en el carácter funcional de los ejes, entre otras, la predominancia de las actividades relacionadas con los servicios y el comercio o la mayor diversidad de actividades económicas y urbanas en los espacios más centrales. Pero también se identifican diferencias, como son la especialización de determinadas actividades características en cada eje metropolitano o la diferencial relación entre la densidad de población y cantidad de actividades, tanto en términos de densidad como en cuantificación lineal. En definitiva, el método propuesto abre nuevas posibilidades para la planificación estratégica de actividades económicas y urbanas en ámbitos metropolitanos. Metropolitan road axes are spaces of urban centrality and opportunity to promote a greater connectivity between different parts of the urban continuum. In this sense, the functional characterization of six representative axes in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, London, New York and Mexico City allows obtaining a current analysis of the density and diversity of economic and urban activities to identify key aspects over which to influence to improve their functional and social structure. For this, a method is proposed that adopts the geolocation data from Google Places social network as a main source of information. From the research, important similarities in the functional character of the axes are deduced, among other the predominance of activities related to services and shopping or the greater diversity of economic and urban activities in more central spaces. But differences are also identified, such as the specialization of certain activities characteristic in each metropolitan axis or the differential relationship between population density and the number of activities both in terms of density and linear quantification. All in all, the method proposed opens new possibilities for the strategic planning of economic and urban activities in metropolitan areas. This exploratory study investigates perceptions of the transition to certified organic production among farmers in the U.S. state of Oregon who were actively transitioning all or part of their operation to certified organic production. It examines the influence of farmer experience with organic farming systems on motivations and obstacles to transition to certified organic farming. The analysis creates and compares three categories of farmers based on their total years of farming experience and years of farming using organic methods—Experienced Organic Farmers, Beginning Organic Farmers, and Experienced Farmers Beginning Organic—and provides insights into the economic and ideological motivations for transitioning to certified organic, as well as the economic, production, and marketing obstacles inherent to certified organic transition.

Tourism is frequently proposed as a strategy to revitalize rural economies. The current mushroom¬ing of web platforms for the tourism sharing eco¬nomy affords rural microentrepreneurs opportu¬nities to capitalize on the growing demand for authentic experiences. However, these platforms may actually be widening the socio-economic gap between individuals across the digital and urban/ rural divides. In addition, the well-established urban culture of entrepreneurial mentorship is not taking hold in the rural areas, which direly need to attract and support nascent entrepreneurs. Farms are increasingly adopting tourism to diversify their business models, and Extension agents are trusted mentors par excellence of agribusiness entrepreneurs; therefore, this study explores the extent to which Extension agents feel able to address the mentoring needs of farm tourism microentrepre-neurs. We measured both tourism e-microentrepre¬neurial self-efficacy (TeMSE) among farmers and tourism e-microentrepreneurial mentoring self-efficacy (TeMMSE) of Extension agents. Results show that farmers have relatively low self-efficacy in the dimensions of e-marketing and marshalling resources, and that agents may be efficacious men¬tors in these dimensions. Farmers also show low self-efficacy in adapting to externalities; however, agents do not perceive themselves as efficacious mentors in this dimension. We conclude with a discussion of practical implications for train-the-trainer strategies to enable farm tourism micro¬entrepreneurship success.

Whether refugees in need of protection should be granted long- or short-term residence permits in the host country upon arrival is a long-standing debate in the migration policy and scholarly literature. Rights-based models of inclusion advocate for secure and long-term residency status arguing that this will provide the foundations for successful inclusion. Responsibilities-based models on the other hand claim that migrants should only be granted such status if certain criteria, such as full-time employment, have been met, again under the belief that such a system will facilitate inclusion into the host society. Using a sudden policy change as a natural experiment combined with detailed Swedish registry data, we examine the effect permanent residency on three measures of labour market inclusion in the short-term. Our findings are twofold. On the one hand, we find that temporary residents that are subject to a relatively less-inclusive situation have higher incomes and less unemployment. However, at the same time, they are less likely to spend time in education than are those with permanent residency. First part title Permanent or Temporary Settlement? The article suggests a set of design requirements to orient urban practices of transformation and space management when they work on transition spaces, which are difficult to interpret and classify in accordance with traditional dichotomous categories such as centre/periphery, urban/not urban, open/closed, abandoned/lived, public/private. The first part of the article explains how various disciplines describe and characterise this kind of space, which cannot be described precisely through traditional categories. Literature search indicates how transition spaces have a number of attributes that can be translated into requirements to steer design actions. The examples of urban practices, described in the central paragraphs of the article, quickly show how project actions actualize the requirements that can be inferred both from literature and from the examples themselves. The conclusions summarise the design requirements to transform and manage transition spaces, in order to orient “pioneering urban practices”, thus opening the way to different modes of intervention and offering new insights into the role of designers and users in this particular kind of practice. Promising prospects emerge not only for the design methodology of this type of spaces, but also for the possibility of addressing relevant issues in the current disciplinary debate concerning, on the one hand, the liveability and care of urban spaces and therefore the regeneration of public space, at a time in history when its existence is questioned, on the other hand the effectiveness of the involvement and empowerment of local societies in the processes of space transformation.

Space is produced by a society in accordance with its habits, and habits, mostly in the Western society, have been heavily influenced by forms of production. Indeed, it is widely acknowledged that the Industrial Revolution definitely changed the space of modern landscapes, cities and dwellings life at all scales, and the way in which we perceive them. Cognitive capitalism is no exception. Since it fully established itself as one of the prevailing economic forces in the 21st century and in the Western world, it produced deep changes in the way in which people work, connect, and live. Starting from the assumption that changes in means of production generate new social relationships, this paper investigates how these changes might result in new ways of building architectural space. Without indulging in a deterministic attitude, it focuses on housing as one of the fundamental artefacts where a society expresses its approach to space. The house is a basic element of complex urban systems and is, therefore, the one calling for a more radical conceptual rethinking, marking an effective distance with the forms inherited from the previous centuries. Finally, the paper aims at understanding the repercussions of the digital paradigm on the space of dwelling, reasoning on some crucial questions to understand how housing might evolve, unfolding through its spatial configuration the new ways of life of the digital society.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased food insecurity, especially among low-income Black and His¬panic families in the United States. Food insecurity is associated with poorer health and higher mortality in adults and greater risk of impaired cognitive development and behavioral problems in children. Pro-viding food for low-income families is an important priority of the COVID-19 response. Food That Connects Us All is a program that provides healthy meals to low-income Black and Hispanic families in Baltimore City. The meals follow guidelines for the planetary health diet, a reference diet developed by the EAT-Lancet Commission to optimize health and be sustainable within planetary boundaries. The planetary health diet consists largely of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and unsaturated oils, with a low to moderate amount of seafood and poultry and with little or no red or processed meats, refined grains, starchy vegetables, and added sugar. In a food survey, participants showed a high level of satisfaction with the taste, appearance, and healthfulness of the meals. Food That Connects Us All is a direct approach to reducing health disparities and demonstrates the feasibility of providing an ideal reference diet to vulnerable low-income families at high risk for poor health outcomes during the pandemic.

First paragraph: Before COVID-19, livestock producers across the U.S. had been complaining to Congress about a lack of meat processing options closer to their farms (Swanson, 2015). Publications used examples of farmers shipping their animals hundreds of miles to be processed (Miles, 2012) and placed the blame on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and industry regulations (Linnekin, 2016). Others have warned that decades of consolidation of meat-processing facilities have left fewer reliable options for livestock farmers, threatening the farm-to-table economy (Shanker, 2017). . . .

A pandemia ocasionou mudanças na dinâmica de trabalho de todo o mundo, principalmente daqueles que desempenham suas atividades nos espaços públicos e de movimentação turística. Este trabalho discute as ações de enfrentamento desenvolvidas pelo Programa de Extensão Laços de Cidadania, que organiza uma Feira com base nos pressupostos da economia solidária no Litoral do Piauí, como potencializador para a atividade turística. Adota-se o relato de experiência, em que são apontados estudos e implementação das ações de enfrentamento ao COVID-19 junto aos pescadores, artesãos e agricultores que comercializam na Feira. Há também a descrição de relatos, coletados de maneira remota e voluntária, através de contato telefônico e aplicativos de mensagens. Como resultado observou-se que, com as ações de compartilhamento de informações e formação entre e para os trabalhadores, estes puderam continuar de forma segura com as vendas no formato online, entretanto algumas resistências são apresentadas.

A pandemia da COVID-19 surpreendeu o mercado turístico no ano de 2020, com queda significativa da atividade e preocupante impacto econômico para o setor, para além das questões sanitárias. A Rede Brasileira de Observatórios de Turismo – RBOT, criou uma pesquisa online, aplicada por todos os representantes, coordenada pelo Observatório de Turismo do Paraná – OBSTUR/PR. O objetivo é discutir esses resultados da Sondagem Empresarial dos Impactos da COVID-19 e o papel dos observatórios, a fim de conhecer e buscar meios de mitigar os desdobramentos de tais impactos com ênfase no setor de turismo do Paraná. A metodologia foi exploratória baseada no survey descritivo, isolando dados relativos ao Paraná. Como resultados, destacam-se a importância dos observatórios e da informação, além da relevância dessa interação; a predominância das micro e pequenas empresas no turismo e como não foram satisfatoriamente contempladas pelas políticas nacionais de recuperação; e, como principal resultado, a preservação dos empregos mais intensa em empresas menores.

O referente artigo apresenta a intenção de viagem do potiguar após a pandemia provocada pela Sars-Cov-2: uma visão da pesquisa do Observatório de Turismo do RN (OBSERVATURN). O objetivo geral deste estudo é apresentar a pesquisa do OBSERVATURN, que verificou o perfil dos turistas potiguares que pretendem viajar após a pandemia da COVID-19; apontar as motivações de viagem do turista norte-rio-grandense após a pandemia e elucidar o formato das viagens que serão realizadas pelos potiguares no pós COVID-19. Para tanto, foram aplicados, pelo observatório, 1.253 questionários online entre os dias 26 de maio a 03 de junho de 2020 e tabulados através do Google Formulários. Portanto, percebeu-se, dentre outros aspectos, que 74% dos potiguares pretendem viajar no pós-pandemia, para destinos mais próximos, a saber: nacionais, estaduais e regionais, com veículos particulares, viagens de curta duração e gastos médios de R$ 1.000,00 a R$ 2.000,00.

This commentary paper starts by questioning the assumption that migration means international migration, and goes on to affirm that migration studies has indeed come of age as a coherent if highly diverse research field. Several emerging epistemic communities are identified: migration and development; gender and migration; lifestyle migration; and youth and student migrations. Finally, I argue that the role of geography in the study of migration has been under-valued.

The emergence of a new research field or area of study in the social sciences always is fraught with controversy, fits and starts, theoretical, methodological, and even epistemological debates. Migration studies is no different, but some things are relatively unique about this ‘new’ field of study, while others are more conventional. The article on the ‘rise of migration studies’ by the CrossMigration team, Levy et al. (Comparative Migration Studies, 8forthcoming), “Between Fragmentation and Institutionalization” under consideration here captures some of the controversies in migration studies, and poses some interesting questions about the direction of the field. Building on the ‘bibliometric analysis’ of journal articles by the cross-migration group, I ask what is unique about migration studies and what is conventional?

O presente artigo tem como objetivo diagnosticar a situação do impacto econômico no turismo causada pela pandemia da COVID-19. Para tal, foi realizada uma pesquisa de sondagem empresarial em ambiente virtual com os diversos segmentos turísticos de Santa Catarina. Os principais resultados mostraram que 76% das empresas tiveram redução total do volume de atendimentos. Entre as principais medidas de mitigação da crise tomadas pelas empresas, 42% renegociaram despesas. Das ações que poderiam ser realizadas pelo estado, 63% indicaram redução de tributos e 50% gostariam de uma campanha de marketing para refortalecer Santa Catarina como destino turístico. Assim, o estudo buscou fundamentar a tomada de decisão por parte do setor público e também do setor privado, como forma de aferir esses impactos e criar condições do retorno gradual das atividades turísticas em Santa Catarina.

Objetiva-se apresentar os resultados e conclusões da pesquisa sobre os impactos econômicos da COVID-19 no setor de Turismo no estado do Maranhão. Na pesquisa de cunho exploratório e de abordagem quantitativa, utilizou-se do levantamento bibliográfico e aplicação de questionários via Googleforms com empreendimentos turísticos localizados em diversos municípios que compõem algum dos polos turísticos do estado do Maranhão. Nos resultados, destacou-se que as empresas entrevistadas possuem similaridades quanto ao perfil sendo a maioria localizada nos polos turísticos indutores do Maranhão, de serviços relacionados a alojamento e agenciamento, com tempo de existência entre 1 a 3 anos. Além disso, a pandemia não causou forte impacto econômico e social durante o período de realização da pesquisa, nem os preços dos produtos/serviços não sofreram alteração. Conclui-se que as empresas demonstraram preocupação devido a possível redução de mais de 75% do faturamento anual e as demissões para os próximos meses, com estimativa de mais de 52% desempregos.

O trabalho apresenta um panorama dos impactos da COVID-19 no setor de Turismo em Minas Gerais, a partir dos resultados obtidos por meio da Sondagem Empresarial realizada em parceria com a Rede Brasileira de Observatórios do Turismo. A análise crítica, de caráter exploratório-descritivo destaca a importância do trabalho em rede, que tornou possível o diagnóstico sobre as perspectivas dos empresários no Estado. A metodologia utilizada foi a aplicação de questionários online, em âmbito nacional. Teve-se como objetivo levantar indicadores para maior compreensão de como as empresas se configuraram frente à pandemia. Concluiu-se que, uso da inteligência de dados, informações e indicadores em rede auxiliou o direcionamento das ações e políticas públicas em Minas Gerais, a consolidação do Observatório de Turismo do estado e o fortalecimento da Rede Brasileira de Observatórios de Turismo.
