In this study, the lavender essential oil-incorporated polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers were fabricated by the electrospinning technique with the presence of kolliphor as a nonionic surfactant. The FTIR spectra supported the chemical composition of the fibers. The FTIR spectra demonstrated that there is no chemical reaction present between PLA and lavender essential oil. The SEM images of all nanofibers showed bead-free morphology. ImageJ results showed that the average diameter of lavender oil-loaded fibers ranged between 121.6 ± 32 and 228.2 ± 53 nm. All lavender essential oil-incorporated nanofibers were hydrophobic with satisfactory thermal properties. Furthermore, the lavender essential oil-incorporated PLA nanofibrous mats exhibited good antioxidant activity. The results showed that as the concentration of the essential oil in resulting nanofibers increased, the antioxidant activity also increased. According to the results of this study, lavender essential oil-loaded PLA fibers can be considered for a wide range of potential applications such as active packaging, food coating, facial masks, and wound dressing. With the increasing prevalence of insomnia-related diseases, the effective treatment of insomnia has become an important health research topic. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil (LEO) is a commonly used medicine for the treatment of insomnia and neurological disorders. However, neither the active components nor its sedative–hypnotic mechanism have been fully discovered. This study aimed to screen the main active terpenes and discover the possible mechanism of LEO through network pharmacology in the treatment of insomnia-related diseases, as well as to verify our hypothesis in insomnia mice. The results showed that, in LEO's 15 potential active ingredients, beta-myrcene had strong sedative–hypnotic effects through the serotonergic synaptic pathway according to the network pharmacological prediction. Further, PCPA(DL-4-chlorophenylalanine)-induced insomnia mice were treated with beta-myrcene for one day or seven days. The quiet state of insomnia mice was increased effectively, and the hypnotic effect was enhanced by anaobarbital sodium by prolonging sleep duration, decreasing sleep latency, and increasing the rate of falling asleep. Beta-myrcene reduced the damage to hypothalamic neuron cells induced by PCPA and increased neurotransmitter levels of GABA, 5-HT, and Glu in the serum and hypothalamus of insomnia mice. Meanwhile, beta-myrcene exerted an improvement in insomnia by upregulating relevant genes and protein expression in the serotonergic synaptic pathway. These results support the merit of the sedative–hypnotic activity of LEO. Beta-myrcene, a terpene in LEO, may be the main source of its sedative–hypnotic properties. Introduction Canola oil with high unsaturated fatty acids and nutritional value is susceptible to oxidation due to lipid oxidation. Lipid oxidation leads to a reduction of nutritional quality, sensory and safety characteristics of the vegetable oils. To retard lipid oxidation, the synthetic antioxidants are usually used in the vegetable oils. By increasing the public concern about health problems of synthetic antioxidants, the use of natural antioxidants is increasing. Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) is an evergreen plant native to the Mediterranean. The presence of linalool, linalyl acetate, 1,8-cineole B-ocimene, terpinen-4-ol, and camphor in lavender essential oil, make it a good natural antioxidant which could use in food industry. Therefore, in the current research, it was aimed to investigate the antioxidant effect of lavender essential oil on the stability of canola oil. Material and Method The lavender was bought from Golestan province and dried in room temperature. The lavender essential oil was prepared by hydro distillation of flower heads. Then, the phenolic compounds were determined using GC-MASS. The Total phenolic content (TPC), flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (FRAP and DPPH) of lavender essential oil were evaluated. Then, lavender essential oil in concentrations of 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mg/kg was added to the crude canola oil compared to canola oils without antioxidants and synthetic antioxidant TBHQ (100 and 200 mg/kg). Then, the samples were kept at 60 to 70 oC for 12 days. The analysis was done in an interval of 24 h for 12 days. Lipid oxidation of samples was determined by peroxide value, p-anisidine value, TOTOX value, and thiobarbituric acid each 24 h. analyses of Data were done by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SPSS software and the means were compared by the Tukey multiple range test. Result and Discussion According to the GC-MS analysis, 1, 8-cineole (59.45 %), linalool acetate (32.48 %), linalool (6.31 %), and limonene (1.06 %) were identified as the major constituent of lavender essential oil. Also, Total phenol, flavonoid, FRAP and DPPH (IC50) contents of lavender essential oil were 71.55 mg GAE/g, 82.66 mg of rutin/100 g, 12.63 mmol H2SO4, and 55.88 mg/ml, respectively. According to the results, all lipid oxidation indexes were increased after twelve days of storage. In general, lavender essential oil was effective in retarding the oxidation of canola oil at a temperature of 70 oC. Also, the concentration of 1000 mg/kg of the essential oil had antioxidant activities similar to the TBHQ in 100 mg/kg concentration. Conclusion It was showed that lavender essential oil, as a natural antioxidant, has the ability to react with the radicals resulting from the oxidation of lipids and causes the interruption of oxidation chain reactions and increases the time and decreases the rate of oxidation. As observed, the oxidation of canola oil in all samples, especially the samples without antioxidants or antioxidants to a lesser extent, increased significantly with increasing storage time. In general, lavender essential oil at L1000 concentration and also in some oxidation indices of lavender essential oil at L800 concentration has an effective role in preventing the oxidation of canola oils like synthetic antioxidant TBHQ.

Objective To investigate the antibacterial effect and its preliminary mechanism of lavender essential oil on multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Methods Micro-dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of lavender essential oil against multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and bactericidal kinetic study was employed to determine the onset and maintenance time of lavender essential oil. Meanwhile, the promoting and therapeutic effects of lavender essential oil on wound healing were observed in a mouse model of infection. Subsequently, crystal violet staining was used to determine the inhibition and clearance of multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii biofilm by lavender essential oil, and laser confocal microscopy was utilized to observe the survival of bacteria in biofilms. NanoDrop instrument was utilized to quantify the leakage of bacterial DNA nucleic acid and protein after intervention with 3 and 6 mg/mL lavender essential oil, and the leakage of bacterial potassium ion was measured by potassium ion test kit. Proteomics technology combined with bio-informatics were applied to explore the action mechanism of lavender essential oil against multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Results The MIC and MBC of lavender essential oil were both 6 mg/mL, which could kill almost all multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii at the time point of 120 min, and showed an obvious dose- and time-dependent manner. The overall animal model evaluation showed that both 3 and 6 mg/mL lavender essential oil could promote wound healing, and the curative effect was obvious. Further studies confirmed that 3 mg/mL lavender essential oil had a certain biofilm inhibitory effect on multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and 6 mg/mL also had a certain biofilm clearance effect under the same conditions. Meanwhile, when incubated at 37 ℃ for 1 h, the dose of 3 mg/mL could increase the leakage of DNA nucleic acid and protein, and significantly promote the efflux of potassium ions. Proteomic analysis suggested that the antibacterial effect of lavender essential oil may be related to affecting the oxidorereductase activity and cell metabolic process of multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and interfering with the biosynthesis of cell wall/membrane/envelope and other structures. Conclusion Lavender essential oil at 3 mg/mL can play an antibacterial effect against multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and its mechanism may be related to the destruction of bacterial biofilm and interference with bacterial metabolism.

This study investigated the phytochemical characteristics, antibacterial activity, and synergistic potential of essential oils derived from Romanian lavender. Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed that linalool is the main compound in all lavender essential oils, with concentrations ranging from 29.410% to 35.769%. Linalyl acetate was found in similar concentrations to linalool. Other significant compounds included 1,8-cineole (8.50%), lavandulyl acetate (5.38%), trans-β-ocimene (6.90%), and camphor (7.7%). A 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test was used to assess antioxidant capacity, with substantial free-radical-scavenging activity shown in the IC50 values determined. The antibacterial efficacy of the oils was higher against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria, with variations in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), the extent of inhibition, and evolution patterns. The study also explored the oils' ability to enhance the efficacy of ampicillin, revealing synergistic interactions expressed as fractional inhibitory concentration indices. In silico protein–ligand docking studies used twenty-one compounds identified by GC-MS with bacterial protein targets, showing notable binding interactions with SasG (−6.3 kcal/mol to −4.6 kcal/mol) and KAS III (−6.2 kcal/mol to −4.9 kcal/mol). Overall, the results indicate that Romanian lavender essential oils possess potent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and their synergistic interaction with ampicillin has potential for enhancing antibiotic therapies. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of lavender aromatherapy via inhalation as a stress management modality for patients in cardiac rehabilitation. This was a quasi-experimental design. Aromatherapy was provided via inhalation to participants before a cardiac rehabilitation session over 8 minutes using lavender essential oil. The same protocol was used in the non-aromatherapy session without the essential oil. Blood pressure and radial pulse were measured, and subjective data were also collected including assessment of stress level (1-10 scale) and affect using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Analyses were performed using SPSS Statistics version 20. Quantitative measures were analyzed using Mann-Whitney nonparametric equivalent to the t test. Inferential measures were analyzed using the χ2 or Fisher's exact test. In the outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program, 25 patients participated in this study. The average change in negative affect (PANAS−) between pre and post-aromatherapy compared with pre- and post-non-aromatherapy sessions was statistically significant. Results showed a reduction in blood pressure following both aromatherapy and non-aromatherapy sessions with no statistical significance between sessions. Heart rate decreased equally post-aromatherapy and non-aromatherapy sessions. Aromatherapy may be a useful stress management tool for cardiac rehabilitation patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, lavender essential oil (LEO) was added to ice creams as ingredient at 0, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1% ratios. Some physicochemical, viscosity, rheological, colorimetric, sensory properties, and pathogen inhibition, including L. monocytogenes ATCC 7644 and S. aureus ATCC 29213, of the ice cream samples with the LEO were investigated. It was determined that the melting rate of the ice creams with the LEO was lower (P<0.05) and the overrun values were higher (P<0.05) than the control sample. The highest L* and a* values were determined in the control samples and the sample with 0.1% LEO, respectively. While C* value of the sample with 0.02% LEO was higher than the other samples (P<0.05), the highest white index (WI) value was determined in the control and the sample with 0.01% LEO. The sample containing 0.01% LEO had the highest viscosity values at 20 and 50 rpm. It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference in the consistency coefficients of the samples (P>0.05) and all samples had pseudolplastic flow. The control sample had the highest sensory score, followed by the sample with 0.02% LEO. It was determined that the LEO addition only had a decreasing effect on the count of S. aureus ATCC 29213. Transdermal drug delivery offers a promising alternative for administering medications like ibuprofen, known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, with reduced gastrointestinal side effects compared to oral administration. This study explored the potential synergistic effects of combining ibuprofen with lavender essential oil (LEO) in transdermal patches. The composition of LEO was analyzed, revealing predominant compounds such as linalyl acetate and linalool, which are known for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The physicochemical properties of the patches were investigated, indicating improved cohesion with the addition of LEO. Additionally, thermal stability assessments demonstrated enhanced stability with LEO incorporation with an increase in onset decomposition temperature from 49.0 to 67.9 °C. The antioxidant activity of patches containing LEO was significantly higher with a free radical scavenging ability of 79.13% RSA compared to 60% RSA in patches without LEO. Release and permeation studies showed that patches with LEO exhibited an increased permeation of ibuprofen through the skin with 74.40% of the drug released from LEO-containing patches compared to 36.29% from patches without LEO after 24 h. Moreover, the permeation rate was notably faster with LEO, indicating quicker therapeutic effects. The inclusion of LEO in transdermal patches containing ibuprofen holds promise for enhancing drug delivery efficiency and therapeutic effectiveness, offering a potential strategy for improved pain management with reduced side effects. Nematodes have a negative impact on crop production and yield. The use of synthetic formulations to control plant parasitic nematodes carries both environmental and human health risks. As these agrochemicals are gradually being phased out, recent research has been focused on finding more environmentally friendly, plant-based alternatives. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of botanicals, used alone or in artificial blends, in paralyzing Meloidogyne incognita second-stage juveniles (J2s) immersed in test solutions or exposed to vapors. We tested thymol, trans-anethole, and two lavender essential oils, referred to as LEOA and LEOB, which vary in their flower and stem compositions. We also employed in our study Melia azedarach aqueous extract (MWE), already proven to have considerable nematicidal activity. According to our findings, all treatments used individually exhibited considerable efficacy, even LEOA and LEOB first reported herein. In addition, all blends exhibited significant synergism, and the best-performing were trans-anethole/thymol, being synergic to paralyzing J2s for up to two days, and trans-anethole/LEOB as well as trans-anethole/MWE, provoking irreversible paralysis since the first day of J2 immersion in test solutions. Most importantly, the blend of trans-anethole with LEOA displayed the best effective synergism against M. incognita both for immersion and fumigation methods. Lastly, the chemical composition analysis displayed linalyl acetate and β-linalool as the major components of LEOA and β-linalool and eucalyptol as the major components of LEOB. A simple green method for the quantification of sweet orange and lavender essential oils (EOs) content in blends was developed using synchronous fluorescence of the first derivative spectra and sample preparation by surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs). Excitation and emission wavelengths pairs (λex/λem) were determined for both EOs (at 336/436 nm for sweet orange and at 330/388 nm for lavender). Optimization was conducted to establish the condition to prepare the SFMEs systems: 50 μL of oily phase containing EO diluted in octan-1-ol (1:4, v/v), 2.0 mL of water and propan-1-ol up to 5.0 mL final volume. Different proportions of EO in the oily phase were evaluated for analytical curves construction. Synchronous fluorescence measurements were performed and the acquired data were corrected by inner filter effect. Considering the first derivative of the synchronous scanning, data were extracted at 316.8 nm (Δλ = 100 nm) and 352.0 nm (Δλ = 58 nm) for sweet orange and lavender EOs, respectively, with correlation coefficients above 0.99. Limits of quantification of 7.97 μg mL−1 and 65.80 μg mL−1 were obtained indicating that 0.46% of sweet orange and 3.69% of lavender EOs can be quantified in mixtures. Simulated blends (25:75%, 50:50% and 75:25%, volume proportions) were also evaluated with recoveries of 71.5 – 128.9% and coefficient of variation between 3.1% – 11.6%. Additionally, the method's greenness was evaluated through three green metrics (Analytical Eco-Scale, GAPI, and AGREE) with consistent results.

Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 120 spinal anesthesia candidates who were randomly assigned into three groups of 40 including control, PMR (Jacobsen group), and aromatherapy. The state-trait anxiety inventory was completed on surgery day and 15 min after the end of the intervention by the samples of all three groups, and at the same time as completing the questionnaire, vital signs were also measured and recorded. Results: The mean score of anxiety after intervention was lower than that before the intervention in the aromatherapy group (P < 0.001). The mean score of anxiety in the aromatherapy group was significantly lower than that in the Jacobsen group (P < 0.001). Moreover, data analysis showed a significant decrease in the mean arterial blood pressure scores of the PMR (P = 008) and aromatherapy (P < 0.001) groups and a statistically significant increase in the mean heart rate scores in the control group (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The use of aromatherapy with lavender is more effective than PMR therapy in reducing the anxiety level of patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. Due to the high level of anxiety and its serious effects on the patient’s hemodynamics, aromatherapy with lavender can be used as an easy and cheap method to reduce anxiety in operation rooms.

Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) essential oil (LEO) is extremely popular and beneficial. In the present study, LEO was extracted with green ultrasound-assisted supercritical CO2 (UscCO2) and other classical methodologies. The highest yield of LEO (5.32 % (w/w)) was achieved with the UscCO2 process, followed by hexane extraction (4.32%), scCO2 extraction (3.94 %) and hydrodistillation (HD; 3.69 %). The contents of two dominant aromatic ingredients, linalool (29.93 %) and linalyl acetate (35.08 %), obtained by the UscCO2 procedure were also the highest. Remarkably, the linalyl acetate content in UscCO2-derived LEO was nearly triple that in LEO extracted via HD (12.33 %). The novel UscCO2 technique not only provided the highest LEO quality but also revealed the highest extraction efficiency under mild extraction parameters. The dynamic solubility of LEO in the UscCO2 and scCO2 procedures was further determined to confirm the kinetic efficacy. The dynamic solubility was simulated with three density-based models, which provided excellent agreement with the experimental results. The approximate heat of vaporization, total heat of solution and heat of solvation obtained from UscCO2 dynamic extraction of LEO were significantly lower than those obtained from the scCO2 procedure. In light of increasing apprehensions surrounding the environmental impact of non-biodegradable plastics, there has been a surge in the exploration of biodegradable films as a viable and sustainable alternative. This research has focused on developing Tara gum (TG)-based films incorporated with Lavender essential oil (LEO) at different concentrations (5–20% w/w) to improve the properties of the films. According to the results, GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of linalool and linalyl acetate as the major compounds in LEO. Among the composite films, the sample containing 5% (w/w) LEO exhibited the highest homogeneity, as evidenced by SEM micrographs, and the CLSM image demonstrated the absence of any clustering or coalescence of LEO within this film. FTIR spectra demonstrated intermolecular interactions between TG and LEO, as evidenced by a new peak at 1458 cm−1 in the LEO-loaded films. The addition of LEO resulted in a significant decrease in the water content (WC) and water solubility (WS) of the films. Furthermore, LEO incorporation improved the contact angle (CA) of the films up to 1.5 times. The TG-LEO films exhibited good transparency, higher elongation at break (EB), and lower Young's modulus (YM). Additionally, LEO positively affected the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films. Overall, the results authenticated the hypothesis of this study and indicated that TG-LEO films have great potential as biodegradable films with promising functionalities for food packaging applications. Background: Cognitive flexibility, a vital component of executive function, entails the utilization of extended brain networks. Olfactory stimulation has been shown to influence various brain functions, particularly cognitive performance. Method: To investigate aroma inhalation's effects on brain activity dynamics associated with cognitive flexibility, 20 healthy adults were recruited to complete a set-shifting task during two experimental conditions: no aroma stimuli vs. lavender essential oil inhalation. Using Thomson's multitaper approach, the normalized power spectral density (NPSD) was assessed for five frequency bands. Results: Findings confirm that aroma inhalation significantly affects behavioral indices (i.e., reaction time (RT) and response accuracy) and electroencephalogram (EEG) signatures, especially in the frontal lobe. Participants showed a tremendous increase in theta and alpha NPSD, associated with relaxation, along with beta NPSD, associated with clear and fast thinking after inhaling the aroma. NPSD of the delta band, an indicator of the unconscious mind, significantly decreased when stimulated with lavender essential oil. Further, participants exhibited shorter RT and more accurate responses following aroma inhalation. Conclusion: Our findings revealed significant changes in oscillatory power and behavioral performance after aroma inhalation, providing neural evidence that olfactory stimulation with lavender essential oil may facilitate cognitive flexibility. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) is an aromatic plant of the Lamiaceae family. The essential oil is produced by steam distillation and is a pale yellow liquid with of specific odour. The oil is used in perfumery, cosmetics and food products. The aim of the present work was a comparative analysis of water-ethanol solutions of lavender essential oil with possibilities for application in food products. The lavender oil was dissolved in different ethanol solutions (70, 75, 80, 85, 90 and 95%) by concentration at oil:solvent ratio = 1:5. The main compound in all solutions depending on the ethanol concentration is monoterpene alcohol linalool (from 54.10 to 38.75%), followed by monoterpene ester linalyl acetate (from 33.10 to 20.81%). Lavender, an aromatic plant with a history dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece, is consumed because of its diverse pharmacological properties, including sedation, sleep aid, and antidepressant effects. However, the mechanisms underlying these antidepressant properties remain unclear. In this study, we explored the impact of lavender essential oil (LEO) inhalation on the diversity of gut microbiota, metabolites, and differential gene expression in the hippocampus of alcohol-withdrawn depressive rats. Additionally, we examined alterations in the hippocampal transient receptor potential (TRP) channel-mediated inflammatory regulation within the brain-gut axis of depressive rats. The results demonstrated a significant decrease in sucrose preference, diminished activity in the central zone of the open field test, and prolonged immobility time in the forced swim test in alcohol-withdrawn depressive rats, indicating the amelioration of depressive states following lavender essential oil inhalation. 16 S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed a significant reduction in Bacteroidota and Muribaculaceae in the gut of alcohol-withdrawn depressive rats, whereas lavender essential oil significantly increased the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae and other bacterial species. Metabolomic analysis identified 646 distinct metabolites as highly correlated biomarkers between the model and lavender essential oil groups. Furthermore, lavender essential oil inhalation significantly attenuated hippocampal inflammatory factors IL-2, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. This study identified elevated expression of Trpv4 and Calml4 in the hippocampal region of alcohol-withdrawn depressed rats and showed that lavender essential oil inhalation regulated aberrantly expressed genes. Our research suggests that lavender essential oil downregulates Trpv4, modulates inflammatory factors, and alleviates depressive-like behavior in alcohol withdrawal rats.

Supercritical CO2 fluid extraction (SFE) was utilized to obtain both lavender essential oil (E2LS3) and hydrolate (E2LS3A), while ultrasound assisted maceration in n-hexane:ethanol (99:1, v:v) provided LA2/1 extract. The extracts, all chemically characterized by UHPLC-HRMS and GC–MS analyses, were screened for their antifungal capability towards six fungi isolated from the plywood support of Haim Steinbach's contemporary artwork "Un-color becomes alter ego #2" (1984). To this purpose, disk diffusion method was applied on both mycelium and conidial suspensions to unravel whether the inhibitory activity affects the growth of fungi at different life cycle stages. The micro-atmosphere method was also explored to assess the response of fungal growth in a saturated atmosphere. Data acquired highlighted that SFE-obtained lavender essential oil, whose oxygenated monoterpene part mostly accounting for terpinene-4-ol, borneol, linalool, camphor, and 1,8-cineole, proves to be a dose- and time-dependent inhibitor of fungal growth. It has also been shown that exposure to the oil vapor phase is more effective at very low dose levels. The promising results allow us to hypothesize the use of the essential oil for treating fungal colonization by exposure to its volatile components in a modified atmosphere environment, with no direct contact with the artwork. All levels of supplemental LVEO diminished serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, while raising the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. Total protein values were augmented in all LVEO groups, with the highest concentrations of albumin and globulin in the LVEO600 group, followed by the LVEO400 group. Supplemental LVEO increased serum concentration of complement 3, interleukin-10, and lysozyme activity in a level-dependent manner. Modifications in the birds’ physiological activities, blood biochemical, intestinal morphological characteristics, and immunological status support the conclusion that dietary LVEO supplementation had numerous positive effects. With the increasing prevalence of insomnia-related diseases, the effective treatment of insomnia has become an important health research topic. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil (LEO) is a commonly used medicine for the treatment of insomnia and neurological disorders. However, neither the active components nor its sedative–hypnotic mechanism have been fully discovered. This study aimed to screen the main active terpenes and discover the possible mechanism of LEO through network pharmacology in the treatment of insomnia-related diseases, as well as to verify our hypothesis in insomnia mice. The results showed that, in LEO’s 15 potential active ingredients, beta-myrcene had strong sedative–hypnotic effects through the serotonergic synaptic pathway according to the network pharmacological prediction. Further, PCPA(DL-4-chlorophenylalanine)-induced insomnia mice were treated with beta-myrcene for one day or seven days. The quiet state of insomnia mice was increased effectively, and the hypnotic effect was enhanced by anaobarbital sodium by prolonging sleep duration, decreasing sleep latency, and increasing the rate of falling asleep. Beta-myrcene reduced the damage to hypothalamic neuron cells induced by PCPA and increased neurotransmitter levels of GABA, 5-HT, and Glu in the serum and hypothalamus of insomnia mice. Meanwhile, beta-myrcene exerted an improvement in insomnia by upregulating relevant genes and protein expression in the serotonergic synaptic pathway. These results support the merit of the sedative–hypnotic activity of LEO. Beta-myrcene, a terpene in LEO, may be the main source of its sedative–hypnotic properties. It may serve as a good potential compound in future clinical studies on coping with insomnia.

This study investigated the phytochemical characteristics, antibacterial activity, and synergistic potential of essential oils derived from Romanian lavender. Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed that linalool is the main compound in all lavender essential oils, with concentrations ranging from 29.410% to 35.769%. Linalyl acetate was found in similar concentrations to linalool. Other significant compounds included 1,8-cineole (8.50%), lavandulyl acetate (5.38%), trans-β-ocimene (6.90%), and camphor (7.7%). A 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test was used to assess antioxidant capacity, with substantial free-radical-scavenging activity shown in the IC50 values determined. The antibacterial efficacy of the oils was higher against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria, with variations in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), the extent of inhibition, and evolution patterns. The study also explored the oils’ ability to enhance the efficacy of ampicillin, revealing synergistic interactions expressed as fractional inhibitory concentration indices. In silico protein–ligand docking studies used twenty-one compounds identified by GC-MS with bacterial protein targets, showing notable binding interactions with SasG (−6.3 kcal/mol to −4.6 kcal/mol) and KAS III (−6.2 kcal/mol to −4.9 kcal/mol). Overall, the results indicate that Romanian lavender essential oils possess potent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and their synergistic interaction with ampicillin has potential for enhancing antibiotic therapies.

Nematodes have a negative impact on crop production and yield. The use of synthetic formulations to control plant parasitic nematodes carries both environmental and human health risks. As these agrochemicals are gradually being phased out, recent research has been focused on finding more environmentally friendly, plant-based alternatives. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of botanicals, used alone or in artificial blends, in paralyzing Meloidogyne incognita second-stage juveniles (J2s) immersed in test solutions or exposed to vapors. We tested thymol, trans-anethole, and two lavender essential oils, referred to as LEOA and LEOB, which vary in their flower and stem compositions. We also employed in our study Melia azedarach aqueous extract (MWE), already proven to have considerable nematicidal activity. According to our findings, all treatments used individually exhibited considerable efficacy, even LEOA and LEOB first reported herein. In addition, all blends exhibited significant synergism, and the best-performing were trans-anethole/thymol, being synergic to paralyzing J2s for up to two days, and trans-anethole/LEOB as well as trans-anethole/MWE, provoking irreversible paralysis since the first day of J2 immersion in test solutions. Most importantly, the blend of trans-anethole with LEOA displayed the best effective synergism against M. incognita both for immersion and fumigation methods. Lastly, the chemical composition analysis displayed linalyl acetate and β-linalool as the major components of LEOA and β-linalool and eucalyptol as the major components of LEOB.

Transdermal drug delivery offers a promising alternative for administering medications like ibuprofen, known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, with reduced gastrointestinal side effects compared to oral administration. This study explored the potential synergistic effects of combining ibuprofen with lavender essential oil (LEO) in transdermal patches. The composition of LEO was analyzed, revealing predominant compounds such as linalyl acetate and linalool, which are known for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The physicochemical properties of the patches were investigated, indicating improved cohesion with the addition of LEO. Additionally, thermal stability assessments demonstrated enhanced stability with LEO incorporation with an increase in onset decomposition temperature from 49.0 to 67.9 °C. The antioxidant activity of patches containing LEO was significantly higher with a free radical scavenging ability of 79.13% RSA compared to 60% RSA in patches without LEO. Release and permeation studies showed that patches with LEO exhibited an increased permeation of ibuprofen through the skin with 74.40% of the drug released from LEO-containing patches compared to 36.29% from patches without LEO after 24 h. Moreover, the permeation rate was notably faster with LEO, indicating quicker therapeutic effects. The inclusion of LEO in transdermal patches containing ibuprofen holds promise for enhancing drug delivery efficiency and therapeutic effectiveness, offering a potential strategy for improved pain management with reduced side effects.

This study focuses on education and the application of massage therapy knowledge using lavender essential oil to reduce anxiety in patients with hypertension risk. Employing a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design, this research gathered data from 113 hypertensive patients at RSU Royal Prima, with a research sample consisting of 30 respondents. The results indicate a significant relationship between massage therapy and the reduction of anxiety levels and blood pressure. These findings imply the importance of integrating non-pharmacological methods such as massage with essential oils into the health education curriculum, enabling nursing students and healthcare professionals to apply a holistic approach in their practice. This research provides new insights into learning and education related to the management of hypertension and anxiety, highlighting the significance of complementary approaches in treating chronic health conditions.

Objectives: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disorder characterized by skin inflammation caused by an imbalance in the immune response. The efficacy of lavender essential oil in treating atopic dermatitis has been demonstrated; however, its specific mechanism of action and active components remain unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the therapeutic effects and possible mechanism of action of LEO on AD in a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced dermatitis mice model. Methods: To determine the efficacy of LEO, serum levels of the cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α were tested in Kunming mice, and network pharmacology was used to predict the targets and mechanisms of LEO in AD treatment, after which network pharmacology was combined with metabolomics to construct complex response–enzyme–gene networks and investigate their potential associations. Based on the predicted mechanisms, skin tissues were further examined by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting analysis, and the skin epidermis was stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and toluidine blue (TB). Results: LEO significantly suppressed the basal levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in the DNCB-induced mice model and predicted that Th17 cell differentiation is a critical pathway for LEO-based network pharmacology in AD treatment. As for the cytokines associated with the Th17 cell differentiation pathway, further experiments verified that LEO significantly reduced the protein expression of interleukin-17A (IL-17A)、Phosphorylated JAK2 (p-JAK)、Phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3), and Retinoic acid-related orphan receptor γt (RORγt) but increased the expression of Foxp3. Additionally, the results of combined network pharmacology and metabolomics analysis showed that LEO could improve two metabolic pathways, namely, linoleic acid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism, by regulating the Th17 cell differentiation pathway; identify two key metabolites (linoleic acid, arachidonic acid); and regulate two differential genes (PTGS1, HPGD). Conclusion: LEO may alleviate DNCB-induced skin inflammation by inhibiting the STAT3/RORγt pathway in Th17 cell differentiation, and reducing the expression of associated inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and improving the metabolism of linoleic and arachidonic acid in vivo.

With the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, multi-drug resistant organisms have become a prominent issue in healthcare, increasing morbidity and mortality in affected patients. One such organism of concern is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) which is a leading cause of a variety of clinical infections. Therefore, in the interest of finding alternate substances to antibiotics, there has been increased interest in the antibacterial properties of lavender essential oil (LEO). This systematic review aims to collate information regarding the antibacterial properties of LEO against S. aureus and MRSA. A systematic search was conducted across four databases between the years 2002 and 2022, and through this, 23 studies were included in this paper. These studies used a variety of methods to ascertain the antibacterial effectiveness of LEO alone or in combination with other substances. Overall, there were mixed results regarding the antibacterial effectiveness of LEO against S. aureus and MRSA, with some studies reporting significant effectiveness, while other studies reporting a minimal to negligible effect. However, findings suggest that LEO works synergistically with other antibacterial substances, and it would be beneficial for additional research to be conducted in this area.

The purpose of this investigation was to extract the essential oil from lavender using the negative pressure cavitation extraction (NPCE) method and compare it to conventional hydro-distillation, as well as to assess the effect of extraction techniques on the yield and physicochemical activity of lavender essential oil. Linalyl acetate, camphor, 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), borneol, terpinen-4-ol, caryophyllene, geraniol, geranyl acetate, and bisabolol are some of the primary compounds extracted from lavender essential oil. The total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of essential oil were measured. The lavender essential oil extracted using the NPCE technique had a total phenolic content of 73.17 ± 0.97mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100ml. Half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) refers to the ability of lavender essential oil extract to scavenge 50% of the original DPPH radicals. The lavender essential oil extracted using the NPCE process has an IC50 of 285.70 ± 0.46g/mL. The impact of sodium alginate edible coating in conjunction with lavender volatile oil (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2% w/v) on overall grape quality was studied over 9 days period at 4°C. It was revealed that the sodium alginate coating infused with lavender essential oil preserved grape quality. The most effective application, however, was sodium alginate combined with lavender essential oil of 1%. Furthermore, the inclusion of lavender volatile oil in the sodium alginate coating decreased the microbial load.

Uncontrollable bleeding continues to stand as the primary cause of fatalities globally following surgical procedures, traumatic incidents, disasters, and combat scenarios. The swift and efficient management of bleeding through the application of hemostatic agents has the potential to significantly reduce associated mortality rates. One significant drawback of currently available hemostatic products is their susceptibility to bacterial infections at the bleeding site. As this is a prevalent issue that can potentially delay or compromise the healing process, there is an urgent demand for hemostatic agents with antibacterial properties to enhance survival rates. To mitigate the risk of infection at the site of a lesion, we propose an alternative solution in the form of a chitosan-based sponge and antimicrobial agents such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and lavender essential oil (LEO). The aim of this work is to provide a new type of hemostatic sponge with an antibacterial barrier against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms: Staphylococcus epidermidis 2018 and Enterococcus faecalis VRE 2566 (Gram-positive strains) and Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 10031 and Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 (Gram-negative strains). Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent and disabling mental disorders, causing health-related burdens. With the increasing demand for and interest in safe and acceptable anxiolytics, several studies report the anxiolytic effects of lavender aromatherapy, providing evidence of its physiological and psychological effects. However, existing reviews comprehensively cover the effects of different modes of delivering aromatherapy. Therefore, this review assesses the efficacy of lavender essential oil inhalation in reducing anxiety. The titles and abstracts of relevant articles published over the last five years were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. This review only included clinical trials that utilized lavender inhalation for anxiety treatment. Eleven studies comprising 972 participants were included. Of these, 10 reported significantly decreased anxiety levels after lavender oil inhalation. The physiological measures of vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, pulse, and saturation, were conducted in three trials, showing that lavender oil inhalation could physiologically affect anxiety levels. Lavender oil inhalation is a safe and feasible anxiolytic intervention for treating people with diverse types of anxiety. Data from further studies with a high-quality design and accurate information are necessary to confirm the validity of these findings and elucidate the anxiety-reducing mechanisms of lavender inhalation. Owing to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, in the last few years, lavender essential oil (LVO) has been used in medical applications as a promising approach for treating infected wounds. However, the practical applicability of LVO is limited by its high volatility and storage stability. This study aimed to develop a novel hybrid hydrogel by combining phytic acid (PA)-crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) and poly(itaconic anhydride-co-3,9-divinyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5] undecane (PITAU) and evaluate its potential effectiveness as an antibacterial wound dressing after incorporating LVO. The influence of the mass ratio between SA and PITAU on the properties and stability of hydrogels was investigated. After LVO loading, the effect of oil addition to hydrogels on their functional properties and associated structural changes was studied. FTIR analysis revealed that hydrogen bonding is the primary interaction mechanism between components in the hybrid hydrogels. The morphology was analyzed using SEM, evidencing a porosity dependent on the ratio between SA and PITAU, while LVO droplets were well dispersed in the polymer blend. The release of LVO from the hydrogels was determined using UV-VIS spectroscopy, indicating a sustained release over time, independent of the LVO concentration. In addition, the hybrid hydrogels were tested for their antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Very good antimicrobial activity was obtained in the case of sample SA_PITAU3+LVO10% against S. aureus and C. albicans. Moreover, in vivo tests showed an increased antioxidant effect of the SA_PITAU3+LVO10% hydrogel compared to the oil-free scaffold that may aid in accelerating the healing process of wounds. Background & Objectives: Exam anxiety can have an unpleasant effect on students and change exam results. This study aimed to investigate the effect of inhaled lavender essential oil aromatherapy on objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)-induced anxiety. Materials & Methods: The present study was conducted as a double-blind, randomized clinical study with a control group. The participants were 51 college students who were randomly divided into two groups of placebo and intervention. The intervention group was given 2 drops of 2% lavender essential oil, and the placebo group was given 2 drops of distilled water. The samples inhaled the essential oil using an absorbable napkin attached to a face mask for 20 minutes. Before the OSCE test, each group's anxiety and vital signs were assessed and recorded before and after the intervention using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Vital Signs Instruments. Results: The results of the independent t-test showed that before the intervention, the difference in mean anxiety between the intervention and placebo groups was not statistically significant (44.16±10.58 vs. 41.80±12.54). Even after the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference between the intervention and the placebo groups in terms of mean anxiety values (44.92±12.18 vs. 43.19±13.12). Conclusion: Inhalation aromatherapy with lavender essential oil does not affect anxiety caused by OSCE test in students.

Abstract Chronic wounds seriously affect the quality of life of the elderly, obese people, and diabetic patients. The excessive inflammatory response is a key driver of delayed chronic wound healing. Although lavender essential oil (EO [lav]) has been proven to have anti‐inflammatory and accelerate wound curative effects, the specific molecular mechanism involved is still ambiguous. The results showed that the wounds treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) not only had delayed healing, but also the expression levels of pro‐inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), and the inflammatory mediator protein, high‐mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB‐1), in the wound tissues were significantly increased. However, treatment of LPS‐induced chronic wounds with EO (lav) accelerated wound healing and decreased IL‐1β and HMGB‐1 expression levels. It was further found that LPS induced macrophage pyroptosis to produce IL‐1β. After treatment with EO (lav), the expression level of macrophage pyroptosis marker Gasdermin D (GSDMD) and pyroptosis‐related cytotoxic effects were significantly reduced. Immunofluorescence results also directly indicate that EO (lav) can protect macrophages from LPS‐induced pyroptosis. Moreover, EO (lav) can down‐regulate expression levels of IL‐1β, GSDMD, and nucleotide‐binding oligomerization domain‐like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) in the caspase‐11‐related pyroptotic signaling pathway. This study demonstrates that EO (lav) can reduce proinflammatory factor production and ameliorate inflammatory response by inhibiting macrophage pyroptosis, which accelerates LPS‐induced chronic wound healing.

Background: Cognitive flexibility, a vital component of executive function, entails the utilization of extended brain networks. Olfactory stimulation has been shown to influence various brain functions, particularly cognitive performance. Method: To investigate aroma inhalation’s effects on brain activity dynamics associated with cognitive flexibility, 20 healthy adults were recruited to complete a set-shifting task during two experimental conditions: no aroma stimuli vs. lavender essential oil inhalation. Using Thomson’s multitaper approach, the normalized power spectral density (NPSD) was assessed for five frequency bands. Results: Findings confirm that aroma inhalation significantly affects behavioral indices (i.e., reaction time (RT) and response accuracy) and electroencephalogram (EEG) signatures, especially in the frontal lobe. Participants showed a tremendous increase in theta and alpha NPSD, associated with relaxation, along with beta NPSD, associated with clear and fast thinking after inhaling the aroma. NPSD of the delta band, an indicator of the unconscious mind, significantly decreased when stimulated with lavender essential oil. Further, participants exhibited shorter RT and more accurate responses following aroma inhalation. Conclusion: Our findings revealed significant changes in oscillatory power and behavioral performance after aroma inhalation, providing neural evidence that olfactory stimulation with lavender essential oil may facilitate cognitive flexibility.

Lavender essential oil (LEO) is known for its medicinal use in the development of pharmaceuticals. Further investigations were demonstrated that LEO has many biological properties including apoptosis. However, The anti-breast cancer activity and mechanism of LEO are still unclear. we aim to elucidate the elusive anti-breast cancer activity and mechanism of LEO by unveiling the intricate molecular targets that it engages with, thereby priming it for effective therapeutic intervention against breast carcinoma. In this paper, we extracted LEO from lavender and analyzed it's chemical constituents by using hydro-distillation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GS-MS/MS) method, respectively. The active components against breast cancer and it's molecular targets were selected and biological process, molecular function, cellular component and involving pathways were evaluated via network pharmacology approach. Cell viability, apoptosis and cell cycle assay were used to evaluate anti-breast cancer effect of LEO. Employing the western blotting method to validate target protein expression following LEO treatment in vitro. We found the 21 effective components and 213 drug-disease common targets of LEO. Amoung them, 7 active components and 19 targets were identified as potential therapeutic targets. Gene ontology results revealed that the drug-disease common targets of LEO were mainly distributed in membrane region, involved in peptide-tyrosine phosphorylation, and primarily associated with protein tyrosine kinase. We also found that drug-disease common targets might contribute to the regulation of PI3K-AKT signaling pathway by using KEGG pathway analysis. Besides, our study demonstrated reduced cell viability, induced apoptosis in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 treated with LEO while cell cycle arrest was not altered. The AKT1 expression down-regulated while PIK3CA expression was increased in both cell lines. Our findings indicate that LEO has the ability to induce apoptosis by modulating the expression of PI3K-AKT signaling pathway in these cell lines.

The aim of the study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of essential oils isolated from different cultivars and morphological parts of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) in combination with the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin. This in vitro study analyzed the effectiveness of the combinations of gentamicin and lavender essential oils against the following strains: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Staphylococcus aureus MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027. The effect of the combination of lavender oils with gentamicin was tested using the checkerboard method. A synergistic effect against S. aureus strain ATCC 25923 was found when gentamicin was combined with lavender essential oils isolated from flowers and leafy stalks (flowers: 'Blue River' FICI—0.192; 'Ellagance Purple' FICI—0.288; leafy stalks: 'Blue River' FICI—0.192; 'Ellagance Purple' FICI—0.320). A synergistic effect was also observed for the combination of gentamicin with lavender essential oils from flowers against the resistant strain of S. aureus (MRSA) ('Blue River' FICI—0,191; 'Ellagance Purple' FICI—0.263), as well as for the essential oils from leafy stalks ('Blue River' FICI—0.076; 'Ellagance Purple' FICI—0.089). Wound healing is a complex process involving blood cells, extracellular matrix, and parenchymal cells. Research on biomimetics in amphibian skin has identified the CW49 peptide from Odorrana grahami, which has been demonstrated to promote wound regeneration. Additionally, lavender essential oil exhibits anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Given these considerations, we propose an innovative emulsion that combines the CW49 peptide with lavender oil. This novel formulation could serve as a potent topical treatment, potentially fostering the regeneration of damaged tissues and providing robust antibacterial protection for skin wounds. This study investigates the physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, and in vitro regenerative capacity of the active components and the emulsion. The results show that the emulsion possesses appropriate rheological characteristics for topical application. Both the CW49 peptide and lavender oil exhibit high viability in human keratinocytes, indicating their biocompatibility. The emulsion induces hemolysis and platelet aggregation, an expected behavior for such topical treatments. Furthermore, the lavender-oil emulsion demonstrates antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Finally, the regenerative potential of the emulsion and its active components is confirmed in a 2D wound model using human keratinocytes. In conclusion, the formulated emulsion, which combines the CW49 peptide and lavender oil, shows great promise as a topical treatment for wound healing. Further research is needed to validate these findings in more advanced in vitro models and in vivo settings, potentially leading to improved wound-care management and novel therapeutic options for patients with skin injuries. Abstract Background ‘Taikong blue’ lavender, a space-bred cultivar of Lavandula angustifolia, is one of the main lavender essential oil production crops in Xinjiang Province, China. Several cases of local usage indicated that ‘Taikong blue’ lavender essential oil (TLEO) had excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties for skin problems. However, to date, substantial data on these functions are lacking. In this study, we aimed to investigate the composition and bioactivities of TLEO and the potential underlying mechanisms through LPS-induced inflammatory models of HaCaT and RAW264.7 cells. Methods The composition of TLEO was determined by GC‒MS. To study the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of TLEO, we induced HaCaT and RAW264.7 cells by LPS. TLEO (0.001%-0.1%, v/v) was used to treat inflamed cells with dexamethasone (DEX, 10 μg/mL) as the standard drug. A variety of tests were carried out, including biochemical assays, ELISA, RT‒PCR, and western blotting. Docking of components was performed to predict potential ligands. Results The GC‒MS analysis revealed that 53 compounds (> 0.01%) represented 99.76% of the TLEO, and the majority of them were esters. TLEO not only reduced the levels of oxidative stress indicators (NO, ROS, MDA, and iNOS at the mRNA and protein levels) but also protected the SOD and CAT activities. According to the RT‒PCR, ELISA, and Western blot results, TLEO decreased inflammation by inhibiting the expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and key proteins (IκBα, NF-кB p65, p50, JNK, and p38 MAPK) in MAPK-NF-кB signaling. Molecular docking results showed that all of the components (> 1% in TLEO) were potent candidate ligands for further research. Conclusion The theoretical evidence for TLEO in this study supported its use in skin care as a functional ingredient for cosmetics and pharmaceutics. Graphical Abstract

Biopolymers such as chitosan (CHT) or alginate (ALG) are among the most prominent for health-related applications due to their broad bioactivity. Their combination for the preparation of membranes is hereby proposed as an application for wound healing with the incorporation of lavender essential oil (LEO), widely known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The preparation of CHT, CHT + LEO, ALG, ALG + LEO, and CHT/ALG + LEO membranes was accomplished, and its composition was analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The water absorption capacity and oil release profile of the membranes revealed higher water uptake capacity when a lower LEO release was obtained. The combined CHT/ALG + LEO film showed a water uptake percentage of 638% after 48 h and a maximum LEO release concentration of 42 mg/L. Cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of the prepared membranes were studied using a HaCaT cell line, with an assessment of cell viability regarding film leachables, DNA quantification, and DAPI-phalloidin staining. The results revealed that the indirect contact of the prepared membranes via its leachables does not compromise cell viability, and upon direct contact, cells do not adhere or proliferate on the surface of the membranes. Chronic wounds seriously affect the quality of life of the elderly, obese people, and diabetic patients. The excessive inflammatory response is a key driver of delayed chronic wound healing. Although lavender essential oil (EO [lav]) has been proven to have anti‐inflammatory and accelerate wound curative effects, the specific molecular mechanism involved is still ambiguous. The results showed that the wounds treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) not only had delayed healing, but also the expression levels of pro‐inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), and the inflammatory mediator protein, high‐mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB‐1), in the wound tissues were significantly increased. However, treatment of LPS‐induced chronic wounds with EO (lav) accelerated wound healing and decreased IL‐1β and HMGB‐1 expression levels. It was further found that LPS induced macrophage pyroptosis to produce IL‐1β. After treatment with EO (lav), the expression level of macrophage pyroptosis marker Gasdermin D (GSDMD) and pyroptosis‐related cytotoxic effects were significantly reduced. Immunofluorescence results also directly indicate that EO (lav) can protect macrophages from LPS‐induced pyroptosis. Moreover, EO (lav) can down‐regulate expression levels of IL‐1β, GSDMD, and nucleotide‐binding oligomerization domain‐like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) in the caspase‐11‐related pyroptotic signaling pathway. This study demonstrates that EO (lav) can reduce proinflammatory factor production and ameliorate inflammatory response by inhibiting macrophage pyroptosis, which accelerates LPS‐induced chronic wound healing. The effect of brain area connectivity caused by an imbalance of the glutamate neurotransmitter in the brains patients experiencing anxiety is determined by α2δ subunit calcium channel activity. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has been investigated to have anxiolytic effects on in vitro studies by its modulation through GABA, NMDA, and serotonin receptors, especially in the amygdala and hippocampus. However, the molecular mechanism of Lavender small molecules to reduce anxiety through calcium channels remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate lavender essential oil compounds which are potentially anxiolytic through the in-silico approach as an inhibitor of the α2δ subunit VGCC. Compound tabulations were obtained from earlier studies and collected from Pubchem database, while the three-dimensional structure of α2δ the subunit was retrieved from RCSB PDB. The physicochemical properties of the compounds were analyzed by using SwissADME and pkCSM. Binding affinity screening and molecular interaction analysis were conducted through CB-Dock web server. From 32 compounds demonstrated for docking against α2δ VGCC, four of them including geranyl formate, neryl alcohol, and phellandral have most binding site similarities compared to pregabalin by pointing at Arg217. This residue was known to exerts the pharmacological action of pregabalin to reduce anxiety and pain. The binding affinity of the geranyl formate (-6,6 kcal/mol), neryl alcohol (-6,4 kcal/mol), and phellandral (-6,2 kcal/mol) were comparable to pregabalin (-6,8 kcal/mol). Molecular dynamic was indicated to predict conformational change of α2δ subunit after superimposed. Thus, current study was indicated that geranyl formate, neryl alcohol, and phellandral as lavender essential oil small molecules has potent beneficial function as anxiolytic potential candidate. The demand for natural products in the treatment of dermatological pathologies has boosted the use of bioactive substances such as lavender essential oil (LEO), which stands out for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and its antimicrobial potential. Biopolymers such as chitosan (CHT) and alginate (ALG) are biodegradable and biocompatible and have proven their viability in biomedical applications such as skin regeneration. The inhibitory effect of LEO on the growth of skin-related bacterial species Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the fungus Candida albicans was studied by incorporating 1% v/v LEO encapsulated in CHT, ALG, and CHT/ALG membranes. Despite the verification of the antimicrobial effect of all type of membranes, no synergistic effect was observed following the addition of LEO. S. aureus and P. aeruginosa showed the most growth on the different substrates and C. albicans demonstrated the highest inhibition. This is a first approach using microorganisms isolated from clinical samples or skin microbiota. Further investigation would be advisable using more clinical strains for each microorganism to validate their biomedical applicability.

The increasing prevalence of Candida albicans resistance to commercial antifungal agents in recent decades has prompted modern medicine and veterinary medicine to search for combined treatment options. The aim of the study was to determine the activity of essential oils from different cultivars and morphological parts of the medicinal lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) in combination with fluconazole against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 strain. The effect of the combination of lavender essential oil with fluconazole was tested using the checkerboard method, and the obtained results were interpreted on the basis of fractional inhibitory concentration indices (FICIs). A synergistic interaction was found for all combinations of fluconazole with essential oils isolated both from flowers and leafy stalks of two tested lavender cultivars: 'Blue River' and 'Ellagance Purple'. The observed enhancement effect of fluconazole antifungal activity was significantly stronger in the case of essential oils obtained from flowers and leafy stalks of 'Blue River' cultivar. Analogous studies were performed for linalool, one of the main components of lavender essential oils, and a similar synergistic interaction with fluconazole was found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The techno-economic feasibility of lavender essential oil supercritical CO2 extraction was studied. The process was scaled up to a pilot plant, and the extraction yield, composition, and antioxidant potential of the extracts were evaluated at 60 °C and 180 bar or 250 bar, achieving a maximum yield of 6.9% and a percentage inhibition of the extracts of more than 80%. These results drove the development of a business plan for three scenarios corresponding to different extraction volumes (20, 50, and 100 L) and annual production. The SWOT matrix showed that this is a promising business idea. The COM was calculated and an investment analysis was performed. The profitability of this process was demonstrated by means of a financial analysis for 8 years, considering a selling price of 1.38 EUR/g for the extract from the 20 L plant and 0.9 EUR/g for industrial-scale plants, supported by the price curve. The sensitivity analysis showed that the price of the equipment was the factor that could most influence the robustness of the project and the business strategy, and the financial ratios evaluation resulted in a ROE value above 57% in all cases, indicating the economic attractiveness of the process.
