There are excessive inter-car lateral vibrations of the current Chinese CRH1 high-speed train, so it is meaningful to improve the high-speed train dynamics by optimising its inter-vehicle suspension. Multi-body system (MBS) dynamics modelling of CRH1 high-speed train with inter-vehicle suspension was first performed in this study, then the MBS model was used to analyse the influential mechanism and the quantitative effects of inter-vehicle damper parameters on vehicle system dynamics, the design of experiment (DOE) approach was finally applied to optimise the inter-vehicle damper parameters. Simulation results showed that after the optimisation, there was a significant reduction in the inter-car lateral accelerations of CRH1 with a maximum rate of 20.1%, in addition, the severe lateral shock and oscillation, especially car roll acceleration, that are induced by aerodynamics when two high-speed trains pass each other were significantly suppressed with a maximum rate of 25%. Thus, the developed MBS model and the obtained optimisation result provide the basis for an engineering solution of the problem of excessive inter-car lateral vibrations of CRH1, the obtained knowledge of inter-vehicle damper parameter effects on high-speed train dynamics are valuable in the context of development of inter-vehicle suspensions for high-speed trains. Well deviation is a prevalent problem in deep oil and gas exploration, leading to a significant increase in drilling costs. The conventional bottom-hole assembly (BHA) anti-deviation design method does not consider the impact of the BHA structure on lateral vibration. This paper proposes an integrated BHA design method that takes into account both anti-deviation and vibration reduction. This method evaluates the BHA's anti-deviation ability using the drilling trend angle. A negative value of the drilling trend angle indicates that the BHA can correct well deviation. A finite element linearized dynamics method is used to evaluate the lateral vibration intensity of the BHA. This method involves calculating the bending displacement caused by mass imbalance and then determining the magnitude of the bending strain energy based on this displacement. The structural factors affecting the anti-deviation ability and potential lateral vibration intensity of pendulum BHAs and bent-housing mud motor (BHMM) BHAs were studied, and field tests were conducted for verification. The research shows that for pendulum BHAs, the factor that has the greatest impact on anti-deviation ability and vibration intensity is the distance from the stabilizer to the drill bit. For BHMM BHAs, the length of the short drill collar has a significant impact on the vibration intensity. Compared with current design methods, the mechanical specific energy (MSE) of the single stabilizer pendulum BHA decreased by 12%, while the MSE of the BHMM BHA decreased by 26.4%. Helical piles are a new type of pile that has good application prospects, and researchers have carried out an in-depth investigation into their vertical uplift and compressive bearing capacity. However, there is relatively little research on the dynamic bearing characteristics of helical piles. Therefore, the lateral vibration of a helical pile embedded in the viscoelastic foundation is systematically studied in this article. Utilizing the equivalent stiffness method to transform a helical pile into a cylindrical pile of special diameter, the lateral vibration model of the helical pile considering shear deformation is established based on the Winkler foundation model and the Timoshenko beam theory. The analytical solutions for the lateral dynamic displacement, bending moment, and shear force of the helical pile are strictly derived, and the rationality of the present solutions is also verified by comparing them with existing solutions. Based on the present solutions, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the influence of the pile and soil properties on the lateral dynamic response of the helical pile. It is found that the load excitation frequency and pile–soil stiffness ratio have a significant influence on the lateral dynamic displacement, bending moment, and shear force of the helical pile with space and time response. The lateral vibration of cracked isotropic thick beams is investigated. Generally, the analysis of thick beam based on line elements can be undertaken using either Timoshenko beam theory or a third order beam theory (TSDT) such as Reddy beam theory. TSDT is superior to Timoshenko beam theory, as it eliminates the need for a shear correction coefficient. However, there is no available solution for a cracked beam based on Reddy beam theory which is the main focus of this paper. The investigated beam is divided into several elements where their stiffness and mass matrices are derived using Reddy beam theory. Each element has two nodes with 3 degrees of freedom (1 lateral and 2 rotational) at each node. The crack was modeled using two rotating springs with stiffnesses that varied with crack depth. These elements are used to connect the adjacent beam elements. The impact of boundary conditions, slenderness ratio, crack location, and crack depth are investigated. In addition, experimental and finite element analyses of cracked steel beams is undertaken to validate the results of the present model. Aiming at the problems of inefficient mitigation of the lateral vibration of high-speed elevator cars, which results in low riding comfort, this paper introduces the electromagnetic active rolling guide shoes and incorporates the sky-hook damping control strategy into the high-speed elevator structure. On this basis, it adopts an optimization algorithm based on Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) to adjust the parameters of the lateral vibration controller, thereby reducing the amplitude of the lateral vibration and controlling it within the human comfort range. Specifically, this paper first incorporates electromagnetic active rolling guide shoes into the vibration reduction device of the high-speed elevator car. Based on the motion characteristics of lateral vibration, a mathematical model is established in which the sky-hook damping control strategy is introduced. Then, a simulation model is built, and the damping parameters of the controller are optimized using the SSA, resulting in effective control of the lateral vibration amplitude of the high-speed elevator car. Simulations demonstrate that the lateral vibration control model of the high-speed elevator car, optimized by SSA, achieves lower amplitudes within the frequency range of 1–2 Hz compared to the results obtained by the Genetic Algorithm (GA), demonstrating the effectiveness of SSA in optimizing the damping parameters of the car controller. Finally, the simulation results are compared with the measured data, and the research findings indicate that the proposed method for lateral vibration control of the car can effectively suppress the lateral vibration amplitude. At present, inverted pendulum model (IPM) has been recognized by increasing researchers due to its capability to capture the characteristics of pedestrian lateral excitation. However, the IPM still has a downside that has been continuously questioned: the velocity proportional pedestrian load coefficient c p is inconsistent with the on-site observations in the case of pedestrian walking with normal frequency. This problem is most likely resulted from that the IPM ignores the synchronization effect. The IPM is derived from indoor single-person experiment and cannot consider the synchronization in the crowd. Synchronization effects are classified into two types： pedestrian–bridge and pedestrian–pedestrian synchronizations. Pedestrian–bridge synchronization is stimulated by bridge vibration, whereas pedestrian–pedestrian synchronization is stimulated by surrounding crowd. In this study, a novel model for pedestrian-induced lateral vibration of footbridge is proposed. It uses the IPM as the basis and adopts a binary coupled Kuramoto model that originally derived from the collective synchronization phenomena to overcome the limitation in IPM. This model can consider the pedestrian–bridge and pedestrian–pedestrian synchronizations, which provides a new way to reveal the mechanism of pedestrian-induced lateral vibration of footbridge. For the first time, numerical solutions were computed using fractional-order strain considerations in the current study. For an isotropic and homogeneous nanobeam, the thermoelasticity with one relaxation time and fractional-order strain theory based on Caputo–Fabrizio's definition of fractional derivative was examined. With thermal loading and in simply supported boundary conditions, the Laplace transformations have been used upon the governing equations and its inversion was computed using the Tzou technique approximation. The numerical calculations for a thermoelastic rectangular gold (Au) nanobeam have been validated as a model where ramp-type heat is considered. The computational solutions have been depicted in two-dimensions graphs for several situations to investigate the impact of the fractional-order and ramping heat parameters on all of the functions studied. The temperature increment distribution, lateral vibration, deformation, tension, and energy density are all influenced by fractional-order and ramp-time heat parameters. The ramp-time heat parameter might be utilized to regulate nanobeam vibration and energy damping in thermoelastic nanobeams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The biodynamic response of 14 subjects to sinusoidal dual-axis vibration in lateral and roll directions is studied. The root mean square of human response is detected by measuring the torque at the seat pan. The effects of phase difference, magnitude, and frequency on the biodynamic responses are investigated. The consistency between human responses to dual-axis and single-axis is studied. With increasing phase difference, human response is found to reach the maximum when the vibrations are anti-phase and then decrease to the minimum when they are in-phase. Besides, the dominance of the lateral excitation is confirmed in the dual-axis vibration. Finally, the principle of equivalence between lateral-roll dual-axis vibration and roll single-axis vibration is established. With the equivalence method, the biodynamic characteristics of the human body to multi-axis vibration are expected to be measured and represented with a much simpler test and dynamic model. Practitioner summary: Proposed equivalence uses one index to evaluate the compound discomfort caused by the roll and lateral vibration. Overestimation of discomfort due by summing the effects of them calculated separately can be avoided. Rubber-tired light rail vehicles are generally operated on lines which include a number of small curves, steep slopes, or track switching sections to reduce construction costs or to place multiple stations in densely populated areas. Recently, the tendency is to increase acceleration, deceleration, and operation speed to shorten travel time and to increase transportation capacity. These track characteristics and operation patterns may result in deteriorating lateral dynamic characteristics in rubber-tired light rail vehicles. Therefore, running gear in rubber-tired light rail vehicles needs to play a role in effectively damping lateral vibrations and shock transmitted from the guidance rails through the guidance wheels. In this paper, new running gear was proposed to improve the lateral vibration and ride comfort in rubber-tired light rail vehicles. The new running gear has been newly installed with lateral rubber shock absorbers that can dampen lateral vibration on curved routes. In addition, it has been installed with a bi-directional return spring in place of the existing restoring coil spring and hydraulic damper to improve lateral vibration on straight routes. The lateral vibration of drill string causes well deviation and the collision between drill collar and sidewall, and severe lateral vibration even affects the drilling safety or reliability. In view of the problems above, the lateral vibration characteristics of drill string need to be analyzed. Therefore, a newly vibration-collision model of BHA (bottom hole assembly) with random collision characteristics is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the dynamic model of drill collar with double stabilizer is presented by utilizing the Lagrange equations. Secondly, the dynamic characteristics of drill collar in air and mud drilling is analyzed with different collision frequencies. Subsequently, the displacement and motion trajectory of drill collar under different structure parameters of BHA and mechanical parameters of system are investigated by numerical simulation. Finally, the influence of rotation speed of BHA and length of drill collar on lateral vibration of drill collar is discussed. The results indicate that the lateral vibration of drill collar in air drilling is more serious than that in mud drilling; and the higher the collision frequency, the more severe the lateral vibration. Improving rotation speed of BHA, length of drill collar and WOB (weight on bit) have promoting influence on lateral vibration of drill collar; however, increasing stabilizer diameter has suppressing influence on lateral vibration of drill collar. Many publications show that the ride comfort of a railway vehicle can be significantly improved using a semi-active damping control of the lateral secondary dampers. However, the control efficiency depends on the selection of the control algorithm and the damper dynamic behaviour, i.e., its force rise response time, force drop response time and force dynamic range. This paper examines the influence of these parameters of a magnetorheological (MR) damper on the efficiency of S/A control for several control algorithms. One new algorithm has been designed. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation with a real magnetorheological damper has been used to get close to reality. A key finding of this paper is that the highest efficiency of algorithms is not achieved with a minimal damper response time. Furthermore, the force drop response time has been more important than the force rise response time. The Acceleration Driven Damper Linear (ADD-L) algorithm achieves the highest efficiency. Under strong wind actions, some long-span flexible deck bridges have been observed to exhibit significant lateral vibrations. Accurate quantification of the self-excited forces induced by lateral vibration is of great significance for the evaluation of the wind-resistant performance of bridges. Three typical deck sections, including a 5:1 rectangular section, a streamlined section, and a central-slotted section, are used to comprehensively address this issue using the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations. The applicability of the linear analysis method for quantifying the self-excited forces is reexamined for different lateral vibration amplitudes and reduced wind speeds. The results show that the self-excited drag force induced by lateral vibration agrees well with the linear theory for the three sections. However, the self-excited lift force and torsional moment induced by lateral vibration cannot be quantified by the linear formulations. For the rectangular section, the self-excited lift force and torsional moments are much smaller than the vortex-induced counterparts. For the streamlined and central-slotted sections, the ratios of the self-excited components to the vortex-induced components are closely related to the reduced wind speed and vibration amplitude. The ratios increase with an increase in vibration amplitude and a decrease in reduced wind speed. Thus, particular attention should be paid to the self-excited lift force and torsional moment induced by lateral motions for bridge decks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The straddle-type monorail tour transit system is a light overhead steel structure, and the lateral stiffness is generally low. However, the limit of the lateral natural vibration frequency is not clear in the current codes of China, and designers may ignore it. Weak lateral stiffness will lead to a violent vibration during vehicle operation and crowds walking, affecting human comfort and structural safety. Based on a practical project, we tested the acceleration of a monorail vehicle under full load conditions, and its running stability and ride comfort were assessed. Then, the impact of pedestrians on lateral vibration under some working conditions was measured and analyzed. Furthermore, the influence of different structural parameters on the lateral fundamental frequency was investigated. The results showed the following: (i) The vehicle's running stability and riding comfort was good. However, human comfort was poor due to the weak lateral stiffness of the structure, which was affected by human-induced vibration. (ii) The comprehensive response of the structure increased with the increase in walking frequency, increased with the increase in the number of people working or weight, and the growth speed slowed down. (iii) The structural stiffness was most sensitive to the change in steel column diameter. (iv) The recommended value of the lateral fundamental frequency limit for different spans of the straddle-type monorail tour transit system was put forward. The recommended lower limit of fundamental frequency for a 15 m span is 5.0 Hz, for an 18 m span it is 3.5 Hz, and for a 25 m span it is 2.8 Hz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the mid-2000 s, longitudinal tinning has been applied to concrete pavements of expressways to improve the comfort and safety of road vehicle users. However, in certain longitudinal tinning sections, lateral vibrations occur during driving, which poses a safety hazard. This paper analyzes the cause behind this problem and proposes a longitudinal texturing specification that can minimize lateral vibration. To perform this analysis, the accelerations of driving vehicles and the degree of lateral vibration transmitted to panels in the vehicles were evaluated for each longitudinal texture applied in South Korea. Structural analysis was also conducted for the lateral force and moment according to the tire tread profile and longitudinal texturing specifications using the finite element method. In addition, field investigation, indoor drivability evaluation, and field application were performed to evaluate the optimal longitudinal texturing specification. The results indicate that the texture designated as 2 × 3 × 19 mm is the optimal longitudinal texture on hardened concrete pavement. However, because this specification is difficult to apply to fresh concrete, 3 × 3 × 16 mm is proposed as the optimal longitudinal texture owing to its excellent performance in the panel survey and in structural analysis. Curved pedestrian bridges are important urban infrastructure with the desired adaptability to the landscape constraints and with aesthetic benefits. Pedestrian bridges feature thin cross-sections, which provide sufficient load capacities but lead to low natural frequencies that make the bridges susceptible to vibration under pedestrian excitation. This study investigates the lateral vibration of a curved bridge with a small radius down to 20 m, proposes an approach to mitigate the lateral vibration of bridges with large curvatures using distributed multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD), and conducts in-situ bridge tests to evaluate the vibration mitigation performance. The lateral vibration was investigated through in-situ tests and finite element analysis as well as the code requirements. The key parameters of the distributed MTMD system were improved by strategically selecting the mass ratio, bandwidth, center frequency ratio, and damper number. The results showed that the curved bridge was subjected to significant lateral vibration due to the coupling of torque and moment, and the recommended design parameters for the studied bridge were derived, i.e., the total mass ratio is 0.02, bandwidth is 0.15, center frequency ratio is 1.0, and damper number is 3. The proposed approach effectively improves the deployment of MTMD for lateral vibration control of the curved bridge. Electromechanical coupling coefficient (k t) of piezoelectric composite is the core indicator for medical ultrasonic, nondestructive testing and underwater acoustic transducers applications. Generally, the k t of piezoelectric composite is susceptible to be interfered by its structure parameter and spurious modes. In this work, we figured out the effect of the polymer on the vibration mode by fixing the size of the piezoelectric rod and changing the content of different softness polymer. The spurious modes were related with resonant standing wave caused by classical Bragg scattering in periodic structures. The propagation of spurious mode vibration can be cut off by soft polymer. The maximum k t of 69% was obtained at a Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PZT4) ceramic volume fraction of 24.5%. The k t was 5% ∼ 10% higher than that of other reported PZT4 ceramic composites and comparable to PZT5 ceramic composites. This work presented a paradigm for vibration modes modulation by changing the polymers ratio, which providing ideas for excellent performance acoustic transducer designing. [Display omitted] • By fixing the volume fraction and thickness of the piezoelectric phase, the thickness vibration resonance peak was basically unchanged. Along with increase of soft polymer, the frequency of the lateral vibration shifted and was close to the thickness vibration. In order to study the influence of speed on the noise level of the V-ribbed belt three-wheel drive system，taking the 6PK V-ribbed belt as an example，a noise test device for the three-wheel drive system of the V-ribbed belt is built based on the acoustic array principle，and the time-domain signal and noise sound pressure distribution cloud diagram of the sound pressure in the transmission system of three wheels at different speeds are obtained. As the rotation speed increases，the noise in the V-belt three-wheel drive system gradually increases. The low-frequency noise caused by the lateral vibration of the V-ribbed belt gradually increases with the increase of the speed. The increase in the lateral vibration noise of the V-ribbed belt is measured by the Doppler laser vibrometer is caused by the increase in the amplitude of the lateral vibration of the V-ribbed belt. It can be seen from the noise sound pressure cloud diagram that the high frequency friction noise caused by the friction between the V-ribbed belt and the pulley increases with the increase of the speed，when the three-wheel drive system of the V-ribbed belt resonates，the transmission system the noise has increased significantly.

The stability of structures is an important aspect that the designer must pay particular attention to in order to ensure safety against collapse. This investigation is concerned with analytical and numerical analyses of the dynamic buckling of plane structures. A rigorous mechanical model is proposed, consisting of a beam-column element with nodal ends possessing two rotational springs of rigidities acting in parallel with the bending stiffness of the beam-column. The model is first analyzed with respect to the dynamic behavior by investigating the influence of the variation in the stiffness of the nodal springs on the fundamental frequency of the proposed mechanical model. Compression axial loading is applied to the beam-column in order to study the nonlinear dynamic behavior by introducing buckling. This novel approach is used to highlight the interaction between the fundamental frequency and the critical buckling load. Simple examples are treated using the approach and the results are compared with those obtained from a global analysis. The results revealed that it is possible to reproduce the stability analysis of a global structure by simply analyzing a target element, taking into account all elements adjacent to it with less than 1% error on the results. The pedestrian-induced lateral vibration of footbridges is essentially classified as a nonlinear stochastic vibration. Accordingly, bridge vibration stability falls within the field of nonlinear stochastic vibration stability. At present, the Lyapunov method is mainly used to analyze such stability. However, this method is qualitative, and it cannot quantitatively analyze the vibration stability probability. In this study, a new analytical method based on a comparison of the input energy and the variation of intrinsic energy (IEVIE) is used to analyze the nonlinear stochastic vibration stability of the lateral vibration of the footbridge. The improved Nakamura model is used to describe the lateral nonlinear stochastic vibration of the footbridge. A combination of the IEVIE method and the probability density evolution (PDE) method is then proposed, in which the IEVIE method is utilized to determine vibration stability. The PDE method is used to obtain the reliability of vibration stability. The proposed method is successfully applied to the Millennium Bridge, and its effectiveness is verified by comparing the Monte Carlo and Lyapunov methods. The proposed method can obtain the dynamic probability of the vibration as stable or instable and provide a reference for quantitative analysis of lateral nonlinear stochastic vibration stability of footbridges. This paper investigates the dynamic response of soil around a laterally vibrating extended pile shaft and its application to the lateral parallel seismic (PS) integrity testing method. Considering the high pile to soil relative stiffness ratio, a new analytical model is proposed incorporating an extended half-space soil model excited by the laterally vibrating pile. The developed equations of the analytical model are solved by employing the Fourier-Hankel integral transform. This scheme avoids the complicated pile–soil coupling analysis while maintaining high accuracy. The developed model and its analytical solution are then utilized to verify the applicability of the lateral PS method to predict the unknown pile length. The effects of pile and soil properties on the soil dynamic response and technical aspects of the PS test are investigated through a comprehensive parametric study. The straddle-type monorail tour transit system is a light overhead steel structure, and the lateral stiffness is generally low. However, the limit of the lateral natural vibration frequency is not clear in the current codes of China, and designers may ignore it. Weak lateral stiffness will lead to a violent vibration during vehicle operation and crowds walking, affecting human comfort and structural safety. Based on a practical project, we tested the acceleration of a monorail vehicle under full load conditions, and its running stability and ride comfort were assessed. Then, the impact of pedestrians on lateral vibration under some working conditions was measured and analyzed. Furthermore, the influence of different structural parameters on the lateral fundamental frequency was investigated. The results showed the following: (i) The vehicle’s running stability and riding comfort was good. However, human comfort was poor due to the weak lateral stiffness of the structure, which was affected by human-induced vibration. (ii) The comprehensive response of the structure increased with the increase in walking frequency, increased with the increase in the number of people working or weight, and the growth speed slowed down. (iii) The structural stiffness was most sensitive to the change in steel column diameter. (iv) The recommended value of the lateral fundamental frequency limit for different spans of the straddle-type monorail tour transit system was put forward. The recommended lower limit of fundamental frequency for a 15 m span is 5.0 Hz, for an 18 m span it is 3.5 Hz, and for a 25 m span it is 2.8 Hz.

Since the mid-2000 s, longitudinal tinning has been applied to concrete pavements of expressways to improve the comfort and safety of road vehicle users. However, in certain longitudinal tinning sections, lateral vibrations occur during driving, which poses a safety hazard. This paper analyzes the cause behind this problem and proposes a longitudinal texturing specification that can minimize lateral vibration. To perform this analysis, the accelerations of driving vehicles and the degree of lateral vibration transmitted to panels in the vehicles were evaluated for each longitudinal texture applied in South Korea. Structural analysis was also conducted for the lateral force and moment according to the tire tread profile and longitudinal texturing specifications using the finite element method. In addition, field investigation, indoor drivability evaluation, and field application were performed to evaluate the optimal longitudinal texturing specification. The results indicate that the texture designated as 2 × 3 × 19 mm is the optimal longitudinal texture on hardened concrete pavement. However, because this specification is difficult to apply to fresh concrete, 3 × 3 × 16 mm is proposed as the optimal longitudinal texture owing to its excellent performance in the panel survey and in structural analysis.

In order to study the loosening mechanism of the flange joint bolt in the lateral vibration,the transverse fretting wear test of simulated fasteners was carried out by means of transverse vibration fatigue testing machine,and then the pretightening force and pre-loading of bolt joints under different lateral loads and frequencies were observed.,and measure the amount of wear and surface damage. The experimental results show that the bolt preload reduction is divided into two stages:the plastic deformation stage in which the pre-tightening force decreases rapidly and the fretting wear stage in which the pre-tightening force decreases slowly. The pre-tightening torque drop is divided into three stages:the first stage is not obvious due to the high local contact stress;the second stage is rapidly degraded due to the plastic deformation,and the third stage bolt enters the fretting wear. At the third stage,the pre-tightening torque begins to slowly decrease. Under low frequency vibration of the bolt,the amount of mass change is not sensitive to small changes in frequency. The surface wear of the bolt in contact with the clamp increases as the alternating amplitude load increases;it decreases as the frequency increases.

This work proposes a finite element method model to predict lateral vibration phenomena arising in the multi-stage rotor (seven stages) with unbalance, including damping and gyroscopic effects. The rotor dynamic analysis includes mathematical and experimental determination of the first and second critical speeds of the rotor and the assessment of the effects induced by the different unbalance combinations. The results show that while considering the unbalance effects in the impellers, critical speeds move to lower frequencies compared to normal conditions when the rotor is properly balanced. Finally, the results obtained analytically achieved a good degree of correspondence with experimental validation tests.

Curved pedestrian bridges are important urban infrastructure with the desired adaptability to the landscape constraints and with aesthetic benefits. Pedestrian bridges feature thin cross-sections, which provide sufficient load capacities but lead to low natural frequencies that make the bridges susceptible to vibration under pedestrian excitation. This study investigates the lateral vibration of a curved bridge with a small radius down to 20 m, proposes an approach to mitigate the lateral vibration of bridges with large curvatures using distributed multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD), and conducts in-situ bridge tests to evaluate the vibration mitigation performance. The lateral vibration was investigated through in-situ tests and finite element analysis as well as the code requirements. The key parameters of the distributed MTMD system were improved by strategically selecting the mass ratio, bandwidth, center frequency ratio, and damper number. The results showed that the curved bridge was subjected to significant lateral vibration due to the coupling of torque and moment, and the recommended design parameters for the studied bridge were derived, i.e., the total mass ratio is 0.02, bandwidth is 0.15, center frequency ratio is 1.0, and damper number is 3. The proposed approach effectively improves the deployment of MTMD for lateral vibration control of the curved bridge. The field tests showed that the vibration was reduced by up to 82% by using the proposed approach.

Disc brakes are widely used in various kinds of light vehicles. Currently, it has become a tendency to reduce the mass and volume of brake systems because of the increasing lightweight requirement for vehicles, especially for passenger vehicles in populated cities and for outdoor sport. However, there is often conflict between light weight and reliability. In this article, the braking characteristics of a thin disc brake were investigated experimentally, using a self-developed inertia braking platform. The platform was designed to conveniently measure multifield characteristics in real time. The goal of the experiment is to verify the special performance of a brake system with a very thin solid disc. Measurements of transient temperature, lateral vibration, and noise in the dry friction contacts of a steel solid thin disc and two resin circular pads were performed. A frequency–time analysis method was used for the lateral vibration of the disc and braking noise. The results suggest that one of the reasons for lateral vibration is the mounting error of the thin disc–shaft system, which should receive extra attention for safety reasons. This article considers lateral vibration of an automobile in a so-called quasi-planar model where both the loss of contact and road deformation are taken into account. The automobile with dependent suspension is modeled as a vibration system which has two masses and four degrees of freedom. The deformed road is modeled as an elastic beam which has uniform rectangular cross-section, is simply supported at the two ends and lies on the Kelvin's visco-elastic ground. The loss of contact and the change in dimensions of contact areas are considered. The differential equations of motion of the vehicle-road coupled system which contains a partial differential equation are transformed into a set of all ordinary differential equations by applying the Bubnov-Galerkin's method. A procedure for numerically solving the transformed differential equations of motion is proposed. Some illustrating results coming from numerical consideration are also presented in the paper. The mechanism which results in the synchronization of people walking across footbridges with the bridges fundamental horizontal frequency is studied. The lateral vibration of a bridge subjected to walking pedestrians is modelled by considering the bridge to be a slender beam. The effect of bridge motion on the footfall forces of walking pedestrians is not considered. The contribution of pedestrians varies with their position on the bridge. It is assumed that the walking gait frequency of a pedestrian follows a Gaussian distribution and pedestrians can unconsciously adjust the phase of their walking cycle closer to that of the bridge, based on the theory of coupled oscillators. A time-dependent nonlinear dynamic equation is derived using the modal expansion approach. The model is then applied to the north span of the Millennium Bridge in London, to produce its excessive lateral vibrations. Agreement between the results and the existing observations supports the rationality and reliability of the method. Several parameters, in particular the walking gait frequency of pedestrians, crowd sensitivity to bridge motion, bridge frequency, bridge damping and different load conditions are investigated. Deep learning-based fault diagnosis models have been demonstrated to recognise machine health conditions from vibration data. However, most related studies have focused on lateral vibration data, and mostly neglected torsional vibration data. Yet, torsional vibration data can provide an advantage in diagnosing gear faults. Torsional vibration is typically less noisy than lateral vibration data as it can be measured directly from the rotating components. To this end, this study presents a large gear fault dataset with artificial faults of varying severity acquired from a downscaled thruster test rig operated at a vast range of rotating speeds. The test rig was equipped with multiple torque transducers, rotary encoders and piezoelectric accelerometers. The lateral and torsional vibration data acquired with these sensors were evaluated with three popular convolutional neural networks in extensive ablation studies. An interpretability analysis was conducted based on amplitude spectra and Grad-CAM visualisations. The results demonstrate that torsional vibration can be an effective source of data for gear fault diagnosis. For example, the models diagnose the most difficult gear conditions using only one torque transducer more accurately than using three accelerometers mounted on the gear box. Furthermore, the highest accuracy in each ablation study related to experiments with combined lateral and torsional vibration data. In addition, the interpretability analysis showed that the lower frequencies had relatively higher amplitudes in torsional vibration than in lateral vibration. The interpretability analysis also indicates that the models reached higher classification accuracies with torsional vibration data due to the lower dominating frequencies. This paper describes an investigation into the vibration characteristics resulting from lateral track irregularities that are transferred and become lateral vehicle vibrations when a railway car transits a curved section of track. These transfer characteristics are derived via vehicle dynamics simulations that take into consideration nonlinear characteristics such as flange contact between the wheels and rail. The derived results revealed that the transmissibility of wheel-set lateral movement from lateral track irregularity is larger on a curved section of track than that on a straight section due to restrictions between the wheel flange and rail. Consequently, the mechanism of vibration transfer that occurs when a railway vehicle is transiting a curved section of track can be theoretically explained.

The reversal and lateral vibration of the drill string are very complex motion and can affect the normal operation of the drill string. The movement of the drill string in the stepped well is different from the movement of the drill string in the regular well. The vibration of the drill string in the stepped well varies with the size of the wellbore and can be visually reflected by the phase speed. To find out the relationship between reversal and lateral vibration, the natural frequency of lateral vibration of the drill string was solved by using the method of energy conservation. The analysis shows that the phase speed of flexural wave in the stepped well is faster in small size wellbore than in large size wellbore. The reversal and lateral resonance is easy to happen in small size wellbore, and the reversal will excite lateral vibration. When the sum of reversal and rotational angular frequencies approaches the natural angular frequency of lateral vibration, the lateral resonance will occur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
