In this paper, we present a new methodology for creating 3D ordered porous nanocomposites based on anodic aluminum oxide template with polyaniline (PANI) and silver NPs. The approach includes in situ synthesis of polyaniline on templates of anodic aluminum oxide nanomembranes and laser-induced deposition (LID) of Ag NPs directly on the pore walls. The proposed method allows for the formation of structures with a high aspect ratio of the pores, topological ordering and uniformity of properties throughout the sample, and a high specific surface area. For the developed structures, we demonstrated their effectiveness as non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors on glucose in a concentration range crucial for medical applications. In this work, we proposed a rapid single-stage laser-induced fabrication of bimetallic micropatterns on the oxide glass surface using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) consisting of choline chloride, citric acid along with nickel, copper and cobalt acetates as metallization solutions. The resulting bimetallic micropatterns were tested as working electrodes for non-enzymatic determination of dopamine. The linear range for dopamine detection was found to be 1–500 µM, with sensitivity of 340.4 µA mM− 1 and 615.2 µA mM− 1 and detection limit of 0.36 µM and 0.51 µM for Ni-Cu and Ni-Co sensor, respectively. For the first time, bimetallic Ni-Cu and Ni-Co structures have been obtained from DESs for high-performance dopamine detection with great potential for further application in non-enzymatic sensing and biosensing. Multimetallic plasmonic systems usually have distinct advantages over monometallic nanoparticles due to the peculiarity of the electronic structure appearing in advanced functionality systems, which is of great importance in a variety of applications including catalysis and sensing. Despite several reported techniques, the controllable synthesis of multimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles in soft conditions is still a challenge. Here, mono-, bi- and tri-metallic nanoparticles were successfully obtained as a result of a single step laser-induced deposition approach from monometallic commercially available precursors. The process of nanoparticles formation is starting with photodecomposition of the metal precursor resulting in nucleation and the following growth of the metal phase. The deposited nanoparticles were studied comprehensively with various experimental techniques such as SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS, and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. The size of monometallic nanoparticles is strongly dependent on the type of metal: 140–200 nm for Au, 40–60 nm for Ag, 2–3 nm for Pt. Bi- and trimetallic nanoparticles were core-shell structures representing monometallic crystallites surrounded by an alloy of respective metals. The formation of an alloy phase took place between monometallic nanocrystallites of different metals in course of their growth and agglomeration stage.

The possibilities of laser-induced liquid phase chemical deposition (LCLD) of metal for continuous generation of nickel nanoparticles, the sizes of which allow their use as a catalyst for organic reactions are considered. Here, we present a laser-induced deposition (LID) approach allowing for single-step surface decoration with NPs of controllable composition, morphology, and spatial distribution. The formation of Ag, Pt, and mixed Ag-Pt nanoparticles on a substrate surface was successfully demonstrated as a result of the LID process from commercially available precursors. The deposited nanoparticles were characterized with SEM, TEM, EDX, X-ray diffraction, and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy, which confirmed the formation of crystalline nanoparticles of Pt (3–5 nm) and Ag (ca. 100 nm) with plasmonic properties. The advantageous features of the LID process allow us to demonstrate the spatially selective deposition of plasmonic NPs in a laser interference pattern, and thereby, the formation of periodic arrays of Ag NPs forming diffraction grating

Until recently, planar carbonaceous structures such as graphene did not show any birefringence under normal incidence. In contrast, a recently reported novel orthorhombic carbonaceous structure with metal nanoparticle inclusions does show intrinsic birefringence, outperforming other natural orthorhombic crystalline materials. These flake-like structures self-assemble during a laser-induced growth process. In this article, we explore the potential of this novel material and the design freedom during production. We study in particular the dependence of the optical and geometrical properties of these hybrid carbon-metal flakes on the fabrication parameters. The influence of the laser irradiation time, concentration of the supramolecular complex in the solution, and an external electric field applied during the growth process are investigated. In all cases, the self-assembled metamaterial exhibits a strong linear birefringence in the visible spectral range, while the wavelength-dependent attenuation was found to hinge on the concentration of the supramolecular complex in the solution. By varying the fabrication parameters one can steer the shape and size of the flakes. This study provides a route towards fabrication of novel hybrid carbon-metal flakes with tailored optical and geometrical properties.

The integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into optical fibers allows the application of their unique properties in robust and versatile devices. Here, we present a laser-induced technique to obtain the deposition of CNTs onto the fiber optics tips of multimode interference (MMI) devices. An MMI device is constructed by splicing a section of no-core fiber (NCF) to a single-mode fiber (SMF). The tip of the MMI device is immersed into a liquid solution of CNTs and laser light is launched into the MMI device. CNTs solutions using water and methanol as solvents were tested. In addition, the use of a polymer dispersant polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the CNTs solutions was also studied. We found that the laser-induced deposition of CNTs performed in water-based solutions generates non-uniform deposits. On the other hand, the laser-induced deposition performed with methanol solutions generates uniform deposits over the fiber tip when no PVP is used and deposition at the center of the fiber when PVP is present in the CNTs solution. The results show the crucial role of the solvent on the spatial features of the laser-induced deposition process. Finally, we register and study the reflection spectra of the as-fabricated CNTs deposited MMI devices.

The synthesis of conductive gold and copper-gold microstructures with high developed surface based on the method of laser-induced metal deposition from solution was developed. The topology and crystallization phase of these structures were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The electrochemical properties of the synthesized materials were investigated using cyclic voltamperometry and amperometry. According to the obtained results, it was found out that copper-gold microstructures demonstrate a linear dependence of Faraday current vs. concentration from 0.025 to 5 µM for D -glucose and from 0.025 to 10 µM for hydrogen peroxide. In turn, gold deposit exhibits a linear dependence of Faraday current vs. concentration from 0.025 to 50 µM for D -glucose and from 0.025 to 1 µM for hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, the synthesized materials reveal low detection limits (0.025 µM) with respect to the aforementioned analytes, which is quite promising for their potential application in design and fabrication of new non-enzymatic biosensors. Laser radiation-induced decomposition of gaseous organic selenides and tellurides resulting in chemical deposition of nanostructured materials on cold surfaces is reviewed with regard to the mechanism of the gas-phase decomposition and properties of the deposited materials. The laser photolysis and laser thermolysis of the Se and Te precursors leading to chalcogen deposition can also serve as a useful approach to nanostructured chalcogen composites and IVA group (Si, Ge, Sn) element chalcogenides provided that it is carried out simultaneously with laser photolysis or thermolysis of polymer and IVA group element precursor.

Abstract: We have pioneered in revealing the fact that sorbitol may be used as an efficient reducing agent in the process of laser-induced copper deposition from solutions; in this case, it is possible to obtain copper lines much higher quality than by using conventional formalin. Abstract: Heterometallic (Au–Cu) phase precipitation on the surface of soda-lime glass as a result of laser-induced chemical liquid phase deposition (LCLD) is demonstrated for the first time. The precipitation of heterometallic structures was carried out under Ar+ laser irradiation from the solutions of supramolecular complexes. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed that the deposits consist of both Au and Cu. Morphology of the deposited structures was found to be dependent on the used solvents: delocalized sparse surface structures in the case of the dichloromethane solution, close packed nanoparticles for the dimethyl formamide and homogeneous phase with nano-pores for the acetone solution. In accordance to the SEM photos and scan EDX analysis the homogeneous heterometallic phase with fixed Au/Cu ratio was achieved for the acetone solution of supramolecular complex. The observed formation of the heterometallic phase was explained by the laser-initiated intramolecular reduction process of the supramolecular metal core. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Excimer laser (KrF gas with wavelength 248nm) was used to deposit alumina coating onto stainless steel substrates through a sol–gel route. Sol–gel alumina coating was first applied on the substrate surface and then immediately irradiated with the excimer laser to initiate the deposition of alumina from the sol onto the substrate surface. The composition and microstructure of alumina coatings obtained through laser-induced deposition were characterised using ATR-FTIR, XRD, SEM, optical microscopy and the mechanical properties were measured by means of nano-indentation. Results show that the laser induced deposition leads to formation of alumina coating which is partially crystallised in γ-form. The deposited coatings demonstrate significantly different composition and microstructure in comparison with the as-dried coating from the same sol–gel alumina. Nano-indentation measurements prove that the laser-deposited alumina coating has much higher mechanical strength than the as-dried xerogel coating, with the hardness values four times and reduced modulus 10 times higher than those of the latter, respectively. Carbon-based and carbon-metal hybrid materials hold great potential for applications in optics and electronics. Here, a novel material made of carbon and gold-silver nanoparticles is discussed, fabricated using a laser-induced self-assembly process. This self-assembled metamaterial manifests itself in the form of cuboids with lateral dimensions on the order of several micrometers and a height of tens to hundreds of nanometers. The carbon atoms are arranged following an orthorhombic unit cell, with alloy nanoparticles intercalated in the crystalline carbon matrix. The optical properties of this metamaterial are analyzed experimentally using a microscopic Müller matrix measurement approach and reveal a high linear birefringence across the visible spectral range. Theoretical modeling based on local-field theory applied to the carbon matrix links the birefringence to the orthorhombic unit cell, while finite-difference time-domain simulations of the metamaterial relates the observed optical response to the distribution of the alloy nanoparticles and the optical density of the carbon matrix., (© 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
