Upper thermal limits in many fish species are limited, in part, by the hearts ability to meet increased oxygen demand during high temperatures. Cardiac plasticity induced by developmental temperatures can therefore influence thermal tolerance. Here, we determined how incubation temperatures during the embryonic stage influence cardiac performance across temperatures during the sensitive larval stage of the imperiled longfin smelt. We transposed a cardiac assay for larger fish to newly hatched larvae that were incubated at 9°C, 12°C or 15°C. We measured heart rate over increases in temperature to identify the Arrhenius breakpoint temperature (TAB), a proxy for thermal optimum and two upper thermal limit metrics: temperature when heart rate is maximized (Tpeak) and when cardiac arrhythmia occurs (TArr). Higher incubation temperatures increased TAB, Tpeak and TArr, but high individual variation in all three metrics resulted in great overlap of individuals at TAB, Tpeak and TArr across temperatures. We found that the temperatures at which 10% of individuals reached Tpeak or TArr and temperatures at which number of individuals at TAB relative to Tpeak (ΔN(TAB,Tpeak)) was maximal, correlated more closely with upper thermal limits and thermal optima inferred from previous studies, compared to the mean values of the three cardiac metrics of the present study. Higher incubation temperatures increased the 10% Tpeak and TArr thresholds but maximum ΔN(TAB,Tpeak) largely remained the same, suggesting that incubation temperatures modulate upper thermal limits but not Topt for a group of larvae. Overall, by measuring cardiac performance across temperatures, we defined upper thermal limits (10% thresholds; Tpeak, 14.4-17.5°C; TArr, 16.9-20.2°C) and optima (ΔN(TAB,Tpeak), 12.4-14.4°C) that can guide conservation strategies for longfin smelt and demonstrated the potential of this cardiac assay for informing conservation plans for the early life stages of fish.

Most host-parasite associations are explained by phylogenetically conservative capabilities for host utilization, and therefore parasite switches between distantly related hosts are rare. Here we report the first evidence of a parasitic spillover of the burrowing sea anemone Edwardsiella carnea from the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi to two scyphozoan hosts: the native Mediterranean barrel jellyfish Rhizostoma pulmo and the invasive Indo-Pacific nomad jellyfish Rhopilema nomadica, collected from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Edwardsiella carnea planulae found in these jellyfish were identified using molecular analyses of the mitochondrial 16S and nuclear 18S rRNA genes. Overall, 93 planulae were found on tentacles, oral arms, and inside of the gastrovascular canals of the scyphomedusae, whereas no infection was observed in co-occurring ctenophores. DNA metabarcoding approach indicated seasonal presence of Edwardsiella sp. in the Eastern Mediterranean mesozooplankton, coinciding with jellyfish blooms in the region. Our findings suggest a non-specific parasitic relationship between Edwardsiella carnea and various gelatinous hosts based on shared functionality rather than evolutionary history, potentially driven by shifts in host availability due to jellyfish blooms. This spillover raises questions about the ecological impacts of parasitism on native and invasive scyphozoan hosts and the potential role of Edwardsiella in controlling their populations. Forty-seven faecal samples of wolves from Bejaia were examined for intestinal helminths. Five nematodes (Ancylostoma caninum (egg), Strongyloides stercoralis (larvae L1), Toxocara canis (egg), Toxascaris leonina (egg), and Trichuris vulpis (egg)), and one cestode (Dipylidium caninum) were identified. These nematodes were detected with a prevalence of 46.8%, 23.4%, 38.2%, 25.3%, and 2.12%, respectively; and a cestode, with a prevalence of 4.3%. Our results show a high relative abundance of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae L1 (37.5%), followed by eggs of Ancylostoma caninum, whether non-embryonated (16.77%) or embryonated (14.28%). Among the ascarids, Toxocara canis was represented with 18.1%, followed by Toxascaris leonina (8.1%). Finally, Dipylidium caninum and Trichuris vulpis were only poorly represented. This is the first study on helminth parasites in wild golden wolves in Bejaia. The results indicate the presence of six gastrointestinal helminths in the wolf population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The across‐shore transport of meroplanktonic larvae is predominantly driven by coastal physical processes, resulting in episodic recruitment of benthic species. Historically, due to the sampling challenges associated with resolving these advective mechanisms across the continental shelf, relevant components of larval transport have been difficult to isolate and understand. We use three‐dimensional temperature and velocity data from an array of 29 moorings to identify fundamental physical processes that could have generated successful across‐shore transport and settlement of meroplankton. The dense spatial and temporal sampling from this array allows us to use Lagrangian particle tracking to estimate the influences of wind conditions and the internal tide on the across‐shore transport of planktonic larvae. Settlement was found to be episodic at all depths studied. Above mid‐water, modeled larvae were successfully transported onshore by the internal tide during wind relaxations. Surprisingly, abundant pulses of shallow‐water larvae were supplied to the coast on occasions when strong, upwelling‐favorable winds (> 4 m s−1) drove offshore‐flowing surface waters, revealing a complex, potentially topographically influenced flow. These intense upwelling‐favorable winds also contributed to subsurface onshore flows that created large pulses of larval settlement in deeper waters (> 20 m). Since the couple of decades the demand for silk has been increasing day by day but the average silk production is not enough to meet its demand. In this study, we investigated the effect of with Maize extract in different concentration (0.5%,1.0 %,1.5 %,2.0%, 2.5 %)on the growth 5th stage silkworm larvae on the biological and commercial traits of Bombyx mori L. The silkworm larvae at 5th instar stage were taken and fed with fresh and healthy mulberry leaves coated with Maize extract in different concentration. Results of the current study revealed that the higher growth parameters of 5th stage silkworm larvae, the cocoon weight, shell weight, and shell ratio were increased, and thus improved the quality of silk as compared to the control. The commercial traits of larvae fed with Maize extract in different concentration leaves also improved significantly. The larvae fed with Maize extract in different concentration treated mulberry leaves showed the maximum cocoon weight, cocoon length, cocoon width, cocoon shell ratio and fibroin content as compared to the control group. It is evident from the results that the fed with Maize extract coated mulberry leaves have a positive effect on the commercial and biological traits of Bombyx mori (L.). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Developmental processes continue in organisms in which sensory systems have reached functional maturity, however, little research has focused on the influence of sensory input on cell and tissue development. Here, we explored the influence of visual system activity on the development of skin melanophores in Xenopus laevis. Methods: Melanophore number was measured in X. laevis larvae after the manipulation of visual input through eye removal (enucleation) and/or incubation on a white or black substrate at the time when the visual system becomes functional (stage 40). To determine the developmental process impacted by visual input, migration, proliferation and differentiation of melanophores was assessed. Finally, the role of melatonin in driving melanophore differentiation was explored. Results: Enucleating, or maintaining stage 40 larvae on a black background, results in a pronounced increase in melanophore number in the perioptic region within 24 h. Time lapse analysis revealed that in enucleated larvae new melanophores appear through gradual increase in pigmentation, suggesting unpigmented cells in the perioptic region differentiate into mature melanophores upon reduced visual input. In support, we observed increased expression of melanization genes tyr, tyrp1, and pmel in the perioptic region of enucleated or black background-reared larvae. Conversely, maintaining larvae in full light suppresses melanophore differentiation. Interestingly, an extra-pineal melatonin signal was found to be sufficient and necessary to promote the transition to differentiated melanophores. Discussion: In this study, we found that at the time when the visual system becomes functional, X. laevis larvae possess a population of undifferentiated melanophores that can respond rapidly to changes in the external light environment by undergoing differentiation. To better understand the limitations of dormancy on Odontomyia Meigen, 1803 (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) survival and body condition, we conducted a series of laboratory-based microcosm experiments. We found that Odontomyia larvae can survive at least two extended dry periods (≥30 days) through dormancy. The presence of moisture in the substrate during dormancy is not necessary to survive and had no effect on survival or larval body mass in our experiments. Energy and bodily water loss likely limit survival in dormant stages. Although these results suggest Odontomyia are fairly resistant to drying, more data is needed on body mass, pupation, and reproductive success across hydroregimes. The more we understand about the survival limitations of rock pool aquatic invertebrates, the more successful conservation efforts will be for their unique aquatic biota. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lacustrine environments from Northern Patagonia are exposed to volcanic events from the Southern Volcanic Zone. Chironomid larvae are an important paleo-proxy because, in addition to their environmental sensitivity, their chitinous cephalic capsules are well preserved in lacustrine sediments, allowing their recovery and identification. We analysed the effects of a recent volcanic eruption (Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex 2011) on the chironomid community based on their cephalic remains accumulated following the ash deposition process. Two pulses of ash deposition were distinguished: a first stage comprising the immediate coarse ash fall and a delayed finer volcanic deposition. An abrupt decline in chironomid taxa and their densities were noted during the first coarse pulse, followed by an attempt of community recovery through the second finer pulse, characterised by main taxa turnover, observing an alternative community functional structure. Based on these results and comparing with past volcanic depositions, we observed different chironomid responses according to their particular ecological habits, and we noted possible percolation effects, mainly in coarse tephras, and probably a delayed record of very low abundance taxa. Our results suggest caution in analysing chironomid assemblages within and adjacent to tephra deposition as local volcanic eruption could affect chironomid community with possible consequences on paleoreconstructions. The orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) is one of the most popular fish in aquaculture due to its high economic value. However, the random occurrence of slow-growing population has led to profit loss. Therefore, transcriptomic analysis was performed to identify the molecular mechanisms involved in driving slow and fast growth, towards addressing this issue. Results show that low expression of developmental genes such as bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP 1) and somatostatin (SST), as well as GH/IGF axis-related genes (IGF-1, IGF2, IGFBP1, IGFBP2) and its downstream signalling pathways are correlated with the metabolism and digestive-system-related pathways in slow-growing groupers. Enrichment analysis further revealed that cellular process and biological regulation, as well as several pathways including glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, linoleic acid metabolism, protein digestion and absorption, and cholesterol metabolism were differentially expressed in slow-growing groups. The findings implied that the genomic architecture of growth between the different families raised and the likely problem of inbreeding have led to significantly reduced growth. It is also suggested that better husbandry practices (optimal dietary requirement) is also vital in supporting the success of a genetic improvement programme. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), especially Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, are promising candidates for biological control of Popillia japonica larvae. Thus, there is a need to study native strains to ensure biological agents adapted to specific environmental conditions to improve their effectiveness in field applications. This work aimed to test the pathogenicity of five Azorean isolates of H. bacteriophora strains to third‐instar larvae of P. japonica under laboratory and semi‐field conditions. All EPNs were able to quickly infect larvae with LT50's ranging between 3.66 and 4.54 days in controlled laboratory conditions. The semi‐field experiment consisted of an EPN application in buried tubes containing five larvae each in May and October. After 15 days, larvae were recovered and confirmed for nematode parasitism. In May, Az29, Az148, Az170, and Az171 displayed a mean of 37% infected larvae per tube. In contrast, EPNs showed a lower infection ability during the experiment in October, and only Az148 maintained the number of parasitized larvae, with a proportion of 40% of infectivity. The results suggest that native EPNs, like Az148, could be better adapted to climatic and edaphic conditions to control P. japonica larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nutritional requirement of fish larvae remains a limiting factor in advanced aquaculture. Micronutrients are crucial for early development, but their dietary inclusion level in the larval feed of carps has not been standardized. The present study was executed to determine the optimum dietary inclusion level of organic and inorganic selenium in the larval feed of Rohu, Labeo rohita. A 35-day feeding trial in triplicate under semi-control conditions was conducted in 21 troughs divided into seven groups. Each trough (capacity 4.0 L) contained 200 larvae (average body weight 0.4 mg). The first group (control) was reared on nano-particulate basal diet (CP 50%), while three groups Se-Na(0.5), Se-Na(1), and Se-Na(1.5) were fed basal diet supplemented with graded levels (0.5–1.5 mg/kg diet) of inorganic form of Se, sodium selenite (Se-Na). The last three groups (Se-Met(0.5), Se-Met(1), and Se-Met(1.5)) were fed organic form of dietary Se, selenium methionine (Se-Met) at the same inclusion level as Se-Na. Results indicated the curvilinear relationship of dietary Se levels with body weight, activity of digestive enzymes (protease, amylase, lipases, and trypsin), and antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, POD, and GSH-Px) activity, intestinal villi, width, and absorptive area. A positive correlation was observed with up to 0.5 and 1 mg/kg diet of Se-Na and Se-Met, respectively; however, above these levels, a negative impact was observed. The upregulation of growth hormone mediator (IGF-1) and downregulation of heat shock protein (HSP-70) also followed a similar trend in response to Se-Na and Se-Met inclusion. The larvae of Neuroptera are predators that feed by injecting bioactive compounds into their prey and then suctioning the fluids through modified mouthparts. We explore the evolutionary history of this feeding structure through the examination of a new fossil larva preserved in Late Cretaceous Kachin amber, which we describe as new genus and species, Electroxipheus veneficus gen et sp. nov. X-ray phase-contrast microtomography enabled us to study the anatomy of the larva in 3D, including the structure of the mouthparts and that of the venom delivery system. The specimen exhibited a unique combination of morphological traits not found in any known fossil or extant lacewing, including an unusual structure of the antenna. Phylogenetic analyses, incorporating a selection of living and fossil larval Neuroptera and enforcing maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference, identified the larva as belonging to the stem group Mantispoidea. The larva shows that the anatomy of the feeding and venom-delivery apparatus has remained unchanged in Neuroptera from the Cretaceous to the present. The morphology of the specimen suggests that it was an active predator, in contrast with the scarcely mobile, specialized relatives, like mantispids and berothids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Post-contact immobility (PCI) is a final attempt to avoid predation. Here, for the first time, we examine the pattern of movement and immobility when antlion larvae resume activity after PCI. To simulate contact with, and escape from, a predator we dropped the larvae onto three different substrates: Paper, Shallow sand (2.3mm-deep) and Deep sand (4.6mm-deep). The Paper lining a Petri dish represented a hard surface that antlion larvae could not penetrate to hide. The Shallow sand permitted the antlions to dig but not to submerge completely whereas the Deep sand allowed them both to dig and to submerge. We tracked their paths automatically and recorded alternating immobility and movement durations over 90min. On the impenetrable substrate, antlion larvae showed super-diffusive dispersal, their movement durations became longer, their immobility durations became shorter and their instantaneous speeds increased. This is consistent with the antlions needing to leave an area of hard substrate and quickly to find somewhere to hide. On Shallow sand, antlion larvae exhibited a modest increase in movement duration, a modest decrease in immobility duration and a concomitant diffusive dispersal. This is consistent with their use of a spiral search, presumably for a suitable depth of sand, to conceal themselves. On Deep sand, the movement and immobility durations of the antlion larvae did not change and their dispersal was sub-diffusive because they were able to bury themselves. On Paper, the distribution of immobility durations had a long tail, consistent with a log-normal distribution. On Shallow and Deep sand, most of the distribution was fitted better by a power law or a log-normal. Our results suggest that PCI in antlion larvae is a disruptive event and that post-PCI movement and immobility gradually return to the pattern typical of intermittent locomotion, depending on the scope for burying and hiding in the substrate. Triploidization influences various biological characteristics of fish, which is associated with reductions in the number of multiple cell types in different tissues/organs. Our behavioral analyses revealed that triploid Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) larvae exhibit lower sensitivity to light compared to diploids. Furthermore, histological analyses revealed a reduction in the number of ganglion cells and an increase in their size in the retinas of triploid T. orientalis larvae. Musca domestica L., a common housefly, and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito are quite well-known pests that can transfer a wide range of diseases to humans as well as animals. In this study, various isoborneol derivatives including esters, ethers, and thioethers were synthesized from isoborneol under mild conditions. These derivatives were evaluated for inhibition of house-fly M. domestica adults and Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae. Two of the synthesized isoborneol ester derivatives (2 and 3) showed good activity against both insect species. Additional two derivatives (6 and 9) were active against M. domestica L., and the derivatives (1–3, 8) were active against Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are a widely used group of pesticides that have glyphosate (GLY) as main active compound and are used to control a wide range of weeds. Experimental and epidemiological studies point to neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption as main toxic effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of developmental exposure to GLY and GBH on locomotor behavior, and the possible contribution of GR-mediated signaling. We used zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae in a continuous exposure regimen to GLY or GBH in the rearing medium. Alongside TL wildtype, we used a mutant line carrying a mutation in the GR which prevents the GR from binding to DNA (grs357), as well as a transgenic strain expressing a variant of enhanced green fluorescent protein (d4eGFP) controlled by a promoter carrying multiple GR response elements (SR4G). We found that acute exposure to GBH, but not GLY, activates GR-mediated signaling. Using a continuous developmental exposure regime, we show that wildtype larvae exposed to GBH display decreased spontaneous activity and attenuated response to environmental stimuli, a pattern of alteration similar to the one observed in grs357 mutant larvae. In addition, developmental exposure to GBH has virtually no effects on the behavior of grs357 mutant larvae. Taken together, our data indicate that developmental exposure to GBH has more pronounced effects than GLY on behavior at 5 dpf, and that interference with GR-mediated signaling may have a relevant contribution. Several species of the worldwide distributed genus Calliphora Robineau‐Desvoidy (Insecta, Diptera, Calliphoridae) are medically important vectors and agents of myiasis. Furthermore, these flies are relevant in forensics because they are found in corpses. Information regarding the taxonomy, bionomics and distribution of Calliphora species endemic to South America, including Calliphora lopesi Mello, is scarce. To expand knowledge on C. lopesi, this study presents descriptions of eggs, larvae, puparia and developmental data at 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26 ± 1°C for the first time. Adult flies were collected from the field and kept in the laboratory to obtain samples for morphological and biological studies. Immatures were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. To assess the growth rate, 10 specimens from each temperature group were randomly removed from the diet and weighed every 24 h from larval hatching until pupation. The minimum developmental threshold, thermal constant and linear development‐rate equations were calculated for each stage. Considering weight gain records and survival rates, the optimum temperature for the development of C. lopesi ranges from 23 to 26°C. A key to third‐instar larvae of known Neotropical species of Calliphora was also provided to assist in identification. This article aims to address the issues of low cultivation density and high labor intensity of manual water exchange in existing scallop seedling ponds, an upwelling recirculating water system for scallop larval cultivation is designed. EDEM-Fluent coupled modelwas used to simulate themovement of scallop larvae in the culture cone in order to guarantee the uniform distribution of larvae in the cultivation device. Design-Expert software was utilized to investigate the impact of the bottom cone angle(θ), the column height/cone height ratio(n) and the inflow velocity(v) on the variation coefficients of the axial and radial distributions of D-shaped larvae within the culture cone. The results indicated that θ = 108.97° and n = 1.8 represent the ideal structural parameters for the culture cone. The further investigation of the culture cones prototype was conducted to examine the impact of the inlet deflector angle (α), cultivation density (τ), and inflow velocity (v) on its performance. θ=108.97°, n=1.8, v=0.19m/s, α=60.94°, and τ=110pcs/ml were found to be the ideal combination of parameters, in this scenario, the D-shaped larvae's radial distributions' coefficients of variation is 22.13%, the error between the experimental and simulation results is 4.41%. Research has shown that EDEMFluent based simulation analysis methods can be used for the design and parameter optimization of upwelling recirculating water scallop larval cultivation system, this paper can provide a reference for the design of an upwelling recirculating water scallop larval cultivation system. Circadian rhythms are self‐sustained endogenous oscillations that are found in all living organisms. In insects, circadian rhythms control a wide variety of behavioral and physiological processes, including feeding, locomotion, mating, and metabolism. While the role of circadian rhythms in adult insects is well‐understood, it is largely unexplored in larvae. This study investigates the potential for larval synchronized activity in the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum), a species exhibiting solitary and aggregation phases. We hypothesized that, similar to adults, larvae would exhibit a daily activity pattern governed by an endogenous circadian clock. We further predicted that the transition between the solitary and gregarious phases extends to unique temporal activity patterns. Our results revealed unique timekeeper gene expression in larvae, leading to a distinct daily rhythm characterized by nocturnal activity. Cues indicating on potential cannibalism did not change daily activity peak. However, the absence of these cues significantly reduced the proportion of rhythmic larvae and led to higher variation in peak activity, highlighting the crucial role of social interactions in shaping their rhythmicity. Marine coastal habitats are often characterized by strong gradients of anthropogenic disturbance such as pollution, typically most severe at urban waterfronts. These variations create stress for local organisms leading to their distribution along the disturbance as a function of their tolerance. non-indigenous species (NIS) are considered more tolerant to anthropogenic disturbances than their native counterparts, thriving in urban areas, where native species are sparser. It is however not yet entirely clear if these distribution patterns are due to larval behavior and preferential settlement or post-settlement processes. In the present study, we investigated the abundance of adults and settlers of two native (Ostrea edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis) and two non-indigenous (Magallana gigas, Xenostrobus securis) bivalves along a strong marine urban environmental gradient. Oysters had sparse abundances of both adults and settlers at all sites, with no obvious distributional gradients. The two mussel species showed different settler-adult distributions along the gradient. Both settlers and adults of the native mussel M. galloprovincialis strongly decreased moving from the outermost periurban site to the innermost urban site, consistent with preferential settlement of larvae according to environmental conditions. The non-indigenous adult mussel X. securis showed a distribution pattern opposite to that of M. galloprovincialis, markedly increasing in abundance from the outermost to the innermost site. This was not paralleled by the distribution of X. securis settlers, which established over a larger area, including sites where adults were essentially absent. The mismatch between settler and adult distributions for X. securis suggests that post-settlement factors dictate spatial adult distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The availability of high-quality gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) larvae in larviculture represents a major bottleneck to the aquaculture. This challenge can be compounded by losses resulting from the emergence of a clinical disorder's symptomatology. In this study, the observed syndrome included a rotated positioning of the larval sagittal plane and in most cases leading eventually to death. Methods: Herein, we examined using amplicon sequencing of the 16S rDNA the bacterial communities associated with S. aurata larvae at different conditions (including both fish with no evidence of the syndrome and fish with syndrome) during the early developmental stages along with the contribution of rearing water, organic matter and provided feed in the microbiota during an experiment of 18 days. Results: Over the development of larvae, differences were observed in the bacterial composition between healthy and symptomatic larvae as well as between components of the system. A remarkable presence of members of the Psychrobacter genus was observed in symptomatic larvaewith a significant increase at 18dph. The healthy larvae harbor different bacterial profile with a dominance of Vibrio and Bacillus genera during 3-8dph, various members of Alphaproteobacteria during 11-14dph and Marinifilum at 18dph. The rearing water showed a different bacterial profile compared to the other components, with a slight effect of healthy larvae at 3-8dph. The bacteriome of feeds provided during the rearing of larvae was found to be diverse. Chlorella was mainly dominated by members of Firmicutes, while Rotifer and Artemia were mainly dominated bymembers of Proteobacteria including different species of Psychrobacter. At 18dph, Artemia feed seems to affect the symptomatic larvae bacteriome, where it enhanced the presence of Psychrobacter spp. Discussion: Interestingly, the comparative network analysis at 18dph indicated that the bacterial associations in symptomatic larvae were primarily driven by members of the Psychrobacter genus. While various phyla contributed to bacterial associations in healthy larvae with different frequencies including mainly members of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota and Firmicutes phyla. Finally, the Gammaproteobacteria/Alphaproteobacteria ratio was found to be related to the health condition of larvae. Understanding nutrition and its effect on growth is essential for developing diets in commercially important species. This study aimed to evaluate the larval development of Callinectes sapidus fed with rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) enriched with Chlorella pyrenoidosa (Ch) as a main protein source and a lipid emulsion (Spr) rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids. The enriched compositions had seven ratios Ch/Spr (w/w): 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, and 40/60. The enriched rotifers with each ratio were called diets. Lipids increased progressively between 100/0 and 40/60 (7.48 to 11.30 g 100 g-1), as well as energy (21.88 to 23.16 kJ g-1), but the protein level did not show a clear trend (63.93 and 67.50 g 100 g-1). The production response of blue crab larvae showed significant differences within diets (P < 0.05). The highest survival (29 to 34%) was obtained in the 50/50 and 40/60 treatments. In the 40/60, 50/50, and 60/40 diets, the larval cycle was shorter (P < 0.05), and the megalopa stage was reached between 49 and 52 days of culture. Metamorphosis tomegalopa occurred between the fifth and eighthmolts; its corresponding weight varied from 0.72 to 1.33 mg, the length varied from 2,632 to 2,926 μm, and Le Cren's condition factor varied from 0.83 to 1.16. The most important factor in the production response was the diet lipid content, which was significantly correlated with the survival, weight, length, and condition factor of C. sapidus larvae. Findings of the present study can be applied in future efforts towardsmass culture of blue crab larvae in the Caribbean and can also potentially be used to study other crustacean species with similar characteristics. The starter diet for Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) has always been a difficult problem for the realization of total artificial reproduction. Therefore, this research analyzed the nutritional composition of artificially fertilized eggs, and transcriptome of samples from early hatchlings of fry to better understand nutrients requirements. The composition of crude lipid and crude protein in fertilized eggs was 7.24% ± 0.32% and 10.56% ± 0.41%, respectively. Seven kinds of essential amino acids (EAA) were detected but took a comparable lower content (3.19%) than other marine fish eggs. We randomly assembled 265.74 million clean reads and identified 1751 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (P < 0.01) from pre-leptocephalus larvae. A total of 23 KEGG pathways related to the digestive and metabolic system were detected. Genes related to the secretion pathway of saliva, pancreatic juice and other digestive juices were significantly changed. Transcriptome analysis showed that as larvae aged, glycolytic metabolism and the transcription level of hexokinase (HK) increased significantly (day 0 to 12). Caddisfly larvae are aquatic insects that play a crucial role in the diverse ecological functions of river ecosystems. In this study, the authors document the caddisfly fauna in northwest Hunan from 2017 to 2022, presenting a checklist for Hunan Province. Prior to this research, only 22 caddisfly species were known in this region. Our collections revealed 73 species, including 67 new records for the province. Descriptions and illustrations of seven new species, Chimarra ventriserrata n. sp., Wormaldia shapingensis n. sp., Psychomyia longispina n. sp., Psychomyia paralonga n. sp., Oecetis unguiculata n. sp., Anisocentropus rotundatus n. sp., Agapetus aries n. sp., along with two noteworthy known species, Diplectrona cf. Kallirrhoe Malicky 2002 and Wormaldia unispina Sun, 1998 are provided. This elevates the total caddisfly fauna in Hunan Province to 89 species, surpassing the previous record fourfold. Experiments were undertaken to estimate the yield losses due to Maruca vitrata (Fabricius) in kharif mungbean at Pulses Research Farm, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bahowal, Hoshiarpur during kharif 2022. The yield losses were estimated using insect-infestation and chemical protection method in the recommended variety of mungbean, ML 1808. In insect-infestation method, at both the locations, the mean number of webs produced per plant after 5 days of insect infestation during first release and second release and pod damage were significantly lower in the infested treatment in comparison to the uninfested treatment. The yield losses were determined to be 21.93 per cent and 21.56 per cent at Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur, respectively using this method. The outcome of chemical protection method at both the locations revealed that the mean number of larvae and webs per plant in the protected plots were significantly lower than unprotected plots after three and five days of two insecticide sprays. Pod damage was significantly higher in the unprotected plots than protected plots at both the locations. The yield losses were determined to be 21.30 per cent and 21.91 per cent in Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur, respectively using chemical protection method. Such estimated yield losses can ultimately be linked to the production factors to identify opportunities for remedial actions that farmers can implement to reduce losses. Colorado potato beetle (CPB) is an extraordinary example of pest resistance to insecticides. It is proved that increased activity of CPB's ALiE / carboxylesterase is closely related to resistance to organophosphate insecticides. ALiE activity of different populations was tested, using spectrophotometry. The frequencies of ALiE activity of individual larvae were similar to the binomial distribution. For more resistant populations to organophosphates, the whole graph is shifted to the area with higher enzyme activity. Consequently, individuals with lower ALiE activity disappear from the population while individuals with higher activity appear more frequently. The analysis of single larvae ALiE activity showed a fairly high homogeneity of the examined populations, except for the population Kaona. Largemouth bass is one of the most important freshwater aquaculture species in China. However, the mechanisms underlying the development of skeleton in the teleosts are not fully comprehensive. In a previous study in our laboratory, it was found that the addition of phospholipids to the diet significantly reduced the malformation rate of largemouth bass larvae. The malformation rate decreased from 91.29 ± 1.05% in the fish fed phospholipid-deficient diet (SP_L) to 11.99 ± 1.19% in the fish fed with diet including 8% phospholipids (SP_H). Therefore, high-throughput RNA-Seq was used to compare the transcriptome of largemouth bass larvae between SP_H and SP_L. Thirty whole body samples originated from 3 tanks in 8% phospholipids inclusion group and 3 tanks in no phospholipids inclusion group were used to reduce inaccuracies. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses revealed that the differentially expressed genes were involved in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, phosphatidylinositol signaling system, glycosphingolipid biosynthesis-lacto and neolacto series, and fatty acid degradation. Among the 584 differentially expressed genes, we paid attention to 6 genes known to be involved in skeletal development. Twist-related protein 2 (twist2) and dishevelled-associated activator of morphogenesis 1 (daam1), two genes related to osteoblast development, were up-regulated in SP_H. Bone gamma-carboxyglutamate (gla) protein (bglap), gene associated with the skeletal development and osteohormatology, was also up-regulated in SP_H. Procollagen C-endopeptidase enhancer b (pcolce b), a gene related to the development of gristle, was up-regulated in SP_H. Higher expression of secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein 1 and 7 (scpp1 and scpp7) in SP_H suggests the stimulation of process related with tooth and bone development. The trend changes of the above genes all indicated that the lack of phospholipids might affect the skeletal development through the regulation of the expression of genes involved in several biological processes related to bone formation. In summary, those results provided valuable information about the reduction of deformity rates in largemouth bass and contributed to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and regulative pathways regulating skeletal growth in larval carnivorous fish. Human helminthiasis is one of the urgent problems of medical science and practical healthcare. More than 90 % of parasitic diseases in humans are caused by helminthiasis. Among helminths, soil-transmitted helminths are of particular importance due to their widespread distribution and the role they play in human pathologies. Ascaris lumbricoides is the most widespread helminth among soil-transmitted helminths. Ascariasis is widespread in all countries, as well as in Azerbaijan, according to the WHO, about 15 % of the world's population is infected with it. WHO has prepared a program for the control and prevention of soil-transmitted helminths for 2016-2020, taking into account the negative impact of this ascariasis on human pathology, especially in children and their widespread distribution not only in developing countries, but also in developed European regions. One of the main goals of this program is to eliminate ascariasis among schoolchildren in the European region by 2020. The Republic of Azerbaijan is one of the regions where soil-transmitted helminths is widespread. Many scientific-research works on various aspects of ascariasis have been carried out at the Scientific-Research Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine in Azerbaijan. Ascariasis infection causes nervous system and cognitive impairment, mental and physical weakness and growth retardation in children. In adults, in most cases, irritability, reduced work capacity, and sleep disturbances occur. Even if children and adults do not have any clinical symptoms, ascariasis causes weight loss and some infectious diseases (dysentery, typhoid fever, etc.). Ascariasis leads to complications of pregnancy and other pathological changes. Mechanical or parenchymal jaundice can be observed in 65 % of patients with ascariasis. Predators negatively affect prey outside of direct attack, and these nonconsumptive effects (NCEs) may cause over half the impacts of predators on prey populations. This "ecology of fear" framework has been extended to host–parasite interactions. The NCEs of parasites are thought to be small relative to those of predators. However, recent research shows ectoparasites exert NCEs on multiple life stages of Drosophila. In this study, we apply recent data to a matrix‐based model of fly populations experiencing infection/consumption and NCEs from an ectoparasitic mite. We found the NCEs of parasites on larvae, which are not actively parasitized, decreased the size of simulated host populations. By contrast, the NCEs on adult flies increased population size through compensatory egg production. The negative NCEs on larvae outweighed the positive effects on adults to reduce population size. Most studies on the feeding ecology of larvae and juveniles of commercially important pelagic fishes have used field-based approaches. However, due to possible biases related to net sampling, it is uncertain whether the results obtained from those studies truly represent the situation of live fish in the sea. Here we investigated the feeding ecology of pelagic fishes through a laboratory experiment minimizing the biases inherent in field net sampling. In the experiment, hatchery-reared juvenile chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and larval/juvenile Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) were fed with wild-caught zooplankton assemblages collected from around Hakatajima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The relationships between fish size and prey number in the gut, and the selectivity on each prey organism were determined. As a result, in both species, prey number and size increased with body size, and the fish showed strong selectivity for crustaceans including copepodites and adults of copepods. Our data has also clearly indicated that both species can selectively prey on preferred foods that are rare while avoiding non-preferred foods that are abundant. These results, which substantially accord with reports from previous field studies, will not only help field scientists make a convincing interpretation of their data, but also open the possibility of further laboratory studies on detailed mechanisms of the feeding selectivity of larval/juvenile pelagic fishes. We compared the effects of lambda‐cyhalothrin as the pure active ingredient and as a formulated product (Zero®), on the larval stage of the autochthonous species Boana pulchella. We evaluated ecotoxicological endpoints, behavioral and developmental alterations, and the biochemical detoxifying, neurotoxic, and oxidative stress responses, covering a wide concentration range from environmental to high application levels. Both pyrethroid preparations displayed similar ecotoxicity (median lethal concentration of ~0.5 mg/L), with the lethal effect of Zero® being more pronounced than that of the active ingredient. Sublethal behavioral alterations in natatory activity were observed at 1000 times lower concentrations, indicating the ecological hazard of tadpole exposure to this pyrethroid at environmentally relevant concentrations. Biochemical endpoints in B. pulchella larvae showed significant responses to lambda‐cyhalothrin in the ng/L range; these responses were different for the pure or the formulated product, and they were variable at higher concentrations. Principal components analysis confirmed the prevalence of biochemical responses as early endpoints at the lowest lambda‐cyhalothrin concentrations; the Integrated Biomarker Response Index proportionally increased with pyrethroid concentration in a similar way for the pure and the formulated products. We conclude that lambda‐cyhalothrin is of concern from an environmental perspective, with particular emphasis on autochthonous anuran development. The battery of biochemical biomarkers included in our study showed a consistent integrated biomarker response, indicating that this is a potent tool for monitoring impacts on amphibians. This study aimed to examine the bacterial, methanogenic archaeal, and eukaryotic community structure in both the midgut and hindgut of Pachnoda marginata larvae using an amplicon sequencing approach. The goal was to investigate how various diets and the soil affect the composition of these three‐domain microbial communities within the gut of insect larvae. The results indicated a notable variation in the microbial community composition among the gut compartments. The majority of the bacterial community in the hindgut was composed of Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae. Nocardiaceae, Microbacteriaceae, and Lachnospiraceae were detected in midgut samples from larvae feeding on the leaf diet, whereas Sphingomonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Promicromonasporaceae dominated the bacterial community of midgut of larvae feeding on the straw diet. The diet was a significant factor that influenced the methanogenic archaeal and eukaryotic community patterns. The methanogenic communities in the two gut compartments significantly differed from each other, with the midgut communities being more similar to those in the soil. A higher diversity of methanogens was observed in the midgut samples of both diets compared to the hindgut. Estimating the number of shrimp larvae plays a critical role for achieving reasonable feeding in aquaculture. However, previous shrimp larvae counting models failed to accurately distinguish between shrimp larvae and other objects due to the loss of shrimp larvae continuity information. Also, shrimp larvae counting has the challenges of multi-scale changes, transparent body overlap, and background noise. To solve the above problems, a novel shrimp larvae counting network called SLCOBNet is proposed. First, overlapping splitting image is devised, with each patch sharing half of its area, ensuring the continuity of information regarding shrimp larvae between patches. Then, shrimp larvae feature of different scales and multi-scale density maps are obtained through the feature pyramid aggregation and the regression head with multi-scale receptive fields, respectively. Moreover, a novel loss function called Bayesian-DM-Count loss, composed of DM-Count loss and Bayesian loss, was designed to address the existing transparent body overlap and background noise problems. Experiments were performed by collecting shrimp larvae data from the breeding trays of a real aquaculture farm. The extensive experimental results on three shrimp larvae datasets have shown that SLCOBNet achieves 3.27, 3.61 and 1.28 in Mean Absolute Error. Hence, the proposed method exhibits a better counting accuracy compared to other counting methods. The larval stage of the Drosophila melanogaster life cycle is characterized by rapid growth and nutrient storage that occur over three instar stages separated by molts. In the third instar, the steroid hormone ecdysone drives key developmental processes and behaviors that occur in a temporally-controlled sequence and prepare the animal to undergo metamorphosis. Accurately staging Drosophila larvae within the final third instar is critical due to the rapid developmental progress at this stage, but it is challenging because the rate of development varies widely across a population of animals even if eggs are laid within a short period of time. Moreover, many methods to stage third instar larvae are cumbersome, and inherent variability in the rate of development confounds some of these approaches. Here we demonstrate the usefulness of the Sgs3-GFP transgene, a fusion of the Salivary gland secretion 3 (Sgs3) and GFP proteins, for staging third instar larvae. Sgs3-GFP is expressed in the salivary glands in an ecdysone-dependent manner from the midpoint of the third instar, and its expression pattern changes reproducibly as larvae progress through the third instar. We show that Sgs3-GFP can easily be incorporated into experiments, that it allows collection of developmentally-equivalent individuals from a mixed population of larvae, and that its use enables precise assessment of changing levels of hormones, metabolites, and gene expression during the second half of the third instar. Simple Summary: Thailand's polyvoltine hybrid silkworm, Dok Bua, is 30% more productive than indigenous breeds and is robust and well-suited to the local environment, making it a preferred choice in Thai sericulture. However, synthetic insecticides used on mulberry pests pose risks to silkworms. Neem extract tends to be a safer alternative. The potential toxicity of Thai neem seed extract on this silkworm and their enzymatic detoxification capability could substantially affect their growth and productivity. To explore this, we carried out toxicological and biochemical assessments. The results indicated that the extract had a significant toxicity across all larval stages. Younger larvae were notably more susceptible. We proceeded to examine the activity of the key enzymes implicated in xenobiotic metabolism. The finding that the detoxification enzyme had a low level of activity in the early instar larvae aligned with the larvae mortality. Neem extract suppressed esterase activity but induced glutathione S-transferases (GST) activity, remarkably, in the whole body. Despite its toxicity, GST metabolism could mitigate the effects, indicating the detoxification capabilities of silkworms. These novel findings suggest that neem extract is toxic to all larvae, with GST playing a critical role in detoxification, highlighting the need for careful consideration in sustainable sericulture safety practices. Neem, a biopesticide, offers a safer alternative to the synthetic insecticides commonly used in mulberry cultivation, which can harm silkworms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Thai neem seed extract on all instar larvae of the Thai polyvoltine hybrid silkworm, Bombyx mori L., Dok Bua strains, focusing on the mortality rate and the activities of esterase (EST) and glutathione S-transferases (GST) enzymes. Acute toxicity was assessed using the leaf-dipping method. Results showed that the mortality rate tended to be higher in younger instars than in older ones. The first instar larvae exhibited the highest mortality rate at 94%, whereas the LC50 was highest in the third instar at 5.23 mg L−1 at 72 h. This trend aligns with the activities of EST and GST, which were evaluated in the whole bodies of the first instar larvae and the midgut tissue of fifth instar larvae. As the extract concentration increased, EST activity decreased while GST activity increased in both the first and fifth instar larvae. These findings highlight that neem extract is toxic to all instar larvae, with GST playing a crucial role in detoxification, particularly in the whole body of the Thai polyvoltine hybrid silkworm. The protein from black soldier fly larvae was used as a functional ingredient of a novel green nanofiber. Larvae protein powder (LP) was blended with biodegradable poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) and processed in an electrospinning machine using a coaxial feeding/mixing method to produce nanofibers approximately 100-350 nm in diameter. To improve the dispersion and interface bonding of various PCL/LP nanofiber components, a homemade compatibilizer, maleic anhydridegrafted poly(e-caprolactone) (MPCL), was added to form MPCL/LP nanofibers. The structure, morphology, mechanical properties, water absorption, cytocompatibility, wound healing, and biodegradability of PCL/LP and MPCL/LP nanofiber mats were investigated. The results showed enhanced adhesion in the MPCL/LP nanofiber mats compared to PCL/LP nanofiber mats; additionally, the MPCL/LP nanofibers exhibited increases of approximately 0.7-2.2 MPa in breaking strength and 9.0-22.8 MPa in Young's modulus. Decomposition tests using a simulated body fluid revealed that the addition of LP enhanced the decomposition rate of both PCL/LP and MPCL/LP nanofiber mats and in vitro protein release. Cell proliferation and migration analysis indicated that PCL, MPCL, and their composites were biocompatible for fibroblast (FB) growth. Biodegradability was tested in a 30 day soil test. Polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) comprise a large group of compounds of mostly plant origin. The best-known compound is hyperforin from St. John's wort with its antidepressant, antitumor and antimicrobial properties. The chemical synthesis of PPAP variants allows the generation of compounds with improved activity and compatibility. Here, we studied the antimicrobial activity of two synthetic PPAP-derivatives, the water-insoluble PPAP23 and the water-soluble sodium salt PPAP53. In vitro, both compounds exhibited good activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. Both compounds had no adverse effects on Galleria mellonella wax moth larvae. However, they were unable to protect the larvae from infection with S. aureus because components of the larval coelom neutralized the antimicrobial activity; a similar effect was also seen with serum albumin. In silico docking studies with PPAP53 revealed that it binds to the F1 pocket of human serum albumin with a binding energy of −7.5 kcal/mol. In an infection model of septic arthritis, PPAP23 decreased the formation of abscesses and S. aureus load in kidneys; in a mouse skin abscess model, topical treatment with PPAP53 reduced S. aureus counts. Both PPAPs were active against anaerobic Gram-positive gut bacteria such as neurotransmitter-producing Clostridium, Enterococcus or Ruminococcus species. Duponchelia fovealis is responsible for great losses in the strawberry production, and entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are an alternative to control this larva. They can be used in combination with other natural compounds with insecticidal activity, such as plant extracts or essential oils (EOs). Thus, our objectives are to evaluate the effects of Baccharis dracunculifolia and Baccharis uncinella EOs on strawberry leaves and third instar larvae of D. fovealis, and to evaluate their in vitro compatibility with strains of Beauveria bassiana and Cordyceps javanica. EOs were not phytotoxic to strawberry leaves at 2% v/v. Larval mortality ranged between 48% and 83% at 1% and 2%, and B. dracunculifolia EO at 2% presented the higher mortality. EO of B. uncinella (BU) at 1% was compatible with two strains of B. bassiana and C. javanica. Therefore, the combined use of BU EO with EPF may be an alternative to control D. fovealis. The Bag‐shelter moth, Ochrogaster lunifer (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae), is an Australian endemic species of Thaumetopoeinae with a univoltine life cycle and gregarious, herbivorous larvae. It is variable throughout its range across the continent, most noticeably by the species of host tree used and nest‐building behaviour. It has long been considered a species complex by some taxonomists, and the lack of gene flow between populations of ground‐nesters and above‐ground nesters at the same sites provides strong evidence for at least two species. We tested the specificity of host use and nesting behaviour of ground‐nesting and trunk‐nesting forms of O. lunifer by transplanting field‐collected egg masses to the other form's host, either in their natural position or in the position used by the other form. At the study site, ground‐nesting and trunk‐nesting (tree‐hugger) O. lunifer coexist. Ground‐nesting larvae are found on Acacia spp., and egg masses are laid at the base of host tree trunks where nests develop whereas tree‐hugger larvae are found on Blakella tessellaris, egg masses are laid in the outer canopy, and nests develop on the trunk or large branches. Of the 47 egg masses of O. lunifer transplanted to the unnatural host, only one cohort of tree‐hugger larvae developed through to adult moths. Placing an egg mass in its unnatural position on its natural host did not prevent the larvae from developing and successfully establishing nests for either nesting‐form, although all the ground‐nesters moved position (from the canopy to the ground) and the tree‐huggers mostly did not (from the ground to the canopy). Only the tree‐hugger form of O. lunifer developed a viable nest on the unnatural host species, established a nest at the unnatural oviposition site, and shared that nest with larvae of the other nesting‐form, suggesting tree‐hugger larvae are somewhat plastic in their behaviour and ecology. Our findings add to previous studies indicating that Acacia is likely the ancestral host of O. lunifer though large areas of its range remain unstudied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elucidating physical transport phenologies in large lakes can aid understanding of larval recruitment dynamics. Here, we integrate a series of climate, hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, and Lagrangian particle dispersion models to: (1) simulate hatch and transport of fish larvae throughout an illustrative large lake, (2) evaluate patterns of historic and potential future climate‐induced larval transport, and (3) consider consequences for overlap with suitable temperatures and prey. Simulations demonstrate that relative offshore transport increases seasonally, with shifts toward offshore transport occurring earlier during relatively warm historic and future simulations. Intra‐ and inter‐annual trends in transport were robust to assumed pelagic larval duration and precise location and timing of hatching. Larvae retained nearshore generally encountered more favorable temperatures and zooplankton densities compared to larvae transported offshore. Larval exploitation of nearshore resources under climate change may depend on a concomitant shift to earlier spawning and hatch times in advance of earlier offshore transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many studies have examined the gene expression of baculoviruses during host infection by infecting cultured insect host cells; however, only a few have attempted to characterize the interaction between baculoviruses and insect larvae, which more accurately models the virus‐insect relationship. The greatest challenge in assessing gene expression profiles in vivo in the larval gut is the lack of infection synchronization compared to cultured cells. Working with bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata, larvae infected with the baculovirus Mamestra configurata nucleopolyhedrovirus‐A (MacoNPV‐A), viral gene expression was measured using droplet‐digital PCR, showing that the rate of infection in individual insects varies extremely widely. Subsequent RNA‐Seq of individual guts revealed that gene expression patterns were consistent in individuals with similar levels of viral gene expression. Therefore, the best approach for analysing baculovirus gene expression in vivo is to use the expression of an early viral gene as a means to select individuals that are closely matched in infection progress to produce the most synchronized infection cohorts for measuring gene expression profiles. In this way, a profile of gene expression was identified very early in infection that would have been masked by the activity of a few very robustly infected individuals present in sample pools made up of multiple individuals. Larvae of Hydrotaea are facultative predators of larvae of flies commonly found in poultry farms, chicken and pig waste, and decaying carcasses. One species, the black dump fly, Hydrotaea aenescens (Wiedemann, 1830), coexists with the housefly Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) in these environments and has been employed in the biological control of the housefly in the USA and Germany. To assess the predatory efficacy of H. aenescens larvae on M. domestica larvae, we conducted controlled laboratory experiments in which we selected larvae of different sizes of the larvae and the densities of both predator and prey. We set up the experiment using adult flies from a poultry farm and reared the larvae they produced in our laboratory. Our findings indicate that second‐ and third‐instar H. aenescens larvae effectively suppressed populations of housefly larvae under laboratory conditions, especially when the latter was smaller or the same size as the former. Under these ideal experimental conditions, a single H. aenescens larva consumed up to 29 larvae of M. domestica, potentially leading to a complete eradication of the housefly population at predator–prey density levels of 1:1 and 1:4, but only when considering both the natural mortality rate of M. domestica larvae and the additional mortality caused by H. aenescens larvae. These results corroborate a pattern previously observed in other predatory larvae and have important implications for biological control and integrated pest management programs targeting M. domestica in poultry and swine farms across South America. Rapid evaluation of the toxicity of metals using fish embryo acute toxicity is facilitative to ecological risk assessment of aquatic organisms. However, this approach has seldom been utilized for the comparative study on the effects of different metals to fish. In this study, acute and sub-chronic tests were used to compare the toxicity of Se(IV) and Cd in the embryos and larvae of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). The embryos with different levels of dechorionation and/or pre-exposure were also exposed to Se(IV) and Cd at various concentrations. The results showed that the LC50-144 h of Cd was 1.3–5.2 folds higher than that of Se(IV) for the embryos. In contrast, LC50-96 h of Se(IV) were 200–400 folds higher than that of Cd for the larvae. Meanwhile, dechorionated embryos were more sensitive to both Se and Cd than the intact embryos. At elevated concentrations, both Se and Cd caused mortality and deformity in the embryos and larvae. In addition, pre-exposure to Cd at the embryonic stages enhanced the resistance to Cd in the larvae. However, pre-exposure to Se(IV) at the embryonic stages did not affect the toxicity of Se(IV) to the larvae. This study has distinguished the nuance differences in effects between Se(IV) and Cd after acute and sub-chronic exposures with/without chorion. Persistent infections caused by Strongyloides stercoralis are probably underestimated in the elderly Italian population. This nematode is unique among helminths: it can last asymptomatically in the host for decades and may present with a broad range of clinical pictures upon reactivation. Misdiagnosis often occurs even when the clinical picture is suggestive. If undetected, this parasitosis can lead to serious consequences when hyperinfection occurs. Herein, we report two peculiar clinical cases of complicated strongyloidiasis with multiple skin lesions. Formulation and preparation of larval feed according to the requirement of Indian major carp is a prerequisite for improving the survival (%) and growth during early developmental stages. A feeding trial of 50 days in a replicate of five was conducted to determine the optimal inclusion levels of fish oil (lipid) in the larval diet of Labeo rohita. Four isonitrogenous (50% CP) nanoparticulate diets with four lipid inclusion levels, L5 (5%), L7 (7%), L9 (9%), and L11 (11%) were prepared and fed to four groups of rohu (Labeo rohita) larvae. At the end of feeding trial, survival (%), growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, gut morphology, and expression of growth and feed intake genes were evaluated. All pairwise comparisons among groups indicated higher growth performance (weight gain, specific growth rate, and daily weight gain), survival (%), and IGF-1 gene expression of the L9 group followed by the L7 while the L11 showed poor performance even less than L5. All studied intestinal enzymes except amylase showed a similar trend. Amylase showed comparable results among L7, L9, and L5, while L11 showed the lowest value. The intestinal villi length also showed higher values in L9 followed by L7, and lowest in the L11 group. Feed intake regulating genes, leptin showed lipid inclusion level upregulation, while ghrelin showed the highest expression in the L9 group. Based on growth performance, gut morphology, intestinal enzyme activity, and gene expression analysis, 9% dietary lipid could be recommended to ensure the optimum growth and survival of L. rohita larvae. The tropical southwest Indian Ocean is a coral biodiversity hotspot, with remote reefs physically connected by larval dispersal through eddies and a complex set of equatorial and boundary currents. Based on multidecadal, 2 km resolution hydrodynamic and larval dispersal models that incorporate temporal variability in dispersal, we find that powerful zonal currents, current bifurcations, and geographic isolation act as leaky dispersal barriers, partitioning the southwest Indian Ocean into clusters of reefs that tend to consistently retain larvae, and therefore gene flow, over many generations. Whilst exceptionally remote, the Chagos Archipelago can broadcast (and receive) considerable numbers of larvae to (and from) reefs across the wider southwest Indian Ocean, most significantly exchanging larvae with the Inner Islands of Seychelles, but also the Mozambique Channel region. Considering multi-generational dispersal indicates that most coral populations in the southwest Indian Ocean are physically connected within a few hundred steps of dispersal. These results suggest that regional biogeography and population structure can be largely attributed to geologically recent patterns of larval dispersal, although some notable discrepancies indicate that palaeogeography and environmental suitability also play an important role. The model output and connectivity matrices are available in full and will provide useful physical context to regional biogeography and connectivity studies, as well as supporting marine spatial planning efforts. Background: Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a parasitic helminth that causes a globally prevalent neglected zoonotic disease, and worms at different developmental stages (muscle larvae, adult worms, newborn larvae) induce immune attack at different infection sites, causing serious harm to host health. Several innate immune cells release extracellular traps (ETs) to entrap and kill most pathogens that invade the body. In response, some unicellular pathogens have evolved a strategy to escape capture by ETs through the secretion of nucleases, but few related studies have investigated multicellular helminths. Results: In the present study, we observed that ETs from neutrophils capture adult worms of T. spiralis, while ETs from macrophages trap muscle larvae and newborn larvae, and ETs had a killing effect on parasites in vitro. To defend against this immune attack, T. spiralis secretes plancitoxin-1, a DNase II-like protein, to degrade ETs and escape capture, which is essential for the survival of T. spiralis in the host. Conclusions: In summary, these findings demonstrate that T. spiralis escapes ET-mediated capture by secreting deoxyribonuclease as a potential conserved immune evasion mechanism, and plancitoxin-1 could be used as a potential vaccine candidate. Despite their young age, zebrafish larvae have a well-developed visual system and can distinguish between different visual stimuli. First, we investigated if the first visual surroundings the larvae experience during the first days after hatching shape their habitat preference. Indeed, these animals seem to "imprint" on the first surroundings they see and select visual stimuli accordingly at 7 days post fertilization (dpf). In particular, if zebrafish larvae experience a bar background just after hatching, they later on prefer bars over white stimuli, and vice versa. We then used this acquired preference for bars to investigate innate numerical abilities. We wanted to specifically test if the zebrafish larvae show real numerical abilities or if they rely on a lower-level mechanism—i.e. spatial frequency—to discriminate between two different numerosities. When we matched the spatial frequency in stimuli with different numbers of bars, the larvae reliably selected the higher numerosity. A previous study has ruled out that 7 dpf zebrafish larvae use convex hull, cumulative surface area and density to choose between two numerosities. Therefore, our results indicate that zebrafish larvae rely on real numerical abilities rather than other cues, including spatial frequency, when spontaneously comparing two sets with different numbers of bars. Mature vertebrates maintain posture using vestibulospinal neurons that transform sensed instability into reflexive commands to spinal motor circuits. Postural stability improves across development. However, due to the complexity of terrestrial locomotion, vestibulospinal contributions to postural refinement in early life remain unexplored. Here we leveraged the relative simplicity of underwater locomotion to quantify the postural consequences of losing vestibulospinal neurons during development in larval zebrafish of undifferentiated sex. By comparing posture at two timepoints, we discovered that later lesions of vestibulospinal neurons led to greater instability. Analysis of thousands of individual swim bouts revealed that lesions disrupted movement timing and corrective reflexes without impacting swim kinematics, and that this effect was particularly strong in older larvae. Using a generativemodel of swimming, we showed how these disruptions could account for the increased postural variability at both timepoints. Finally, late lesions disrupted the fin/trunk coordination observed in older larvae, linking vestibulospinal neurons to postural control schemes used to navigate in depth. Since later lesions were considerably more disruptive to postural stability, we conclude that vestibulospinal contributions to balance increase as larvae mature. Vestibulospinal neurons are highly conserved across vertebrates; we therefore propose that they are a substrate for developmental improvements to postural control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to develop a feeding protocol for the larviculture of Apistogramma cacatuoides, using the histological approach to larval nutrition conditions. For this, three experiments were carried out. Experiment 1 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the optimal amount of Artemia nauplii (AN) per larva, and three treatments were evaluated: P1—feeding with 25 A. nauplii per larva (AN/L) during the first 5 days, followed by 50 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 100 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day; P2 and P3—37 and 50 AN/L during the first 5 days, 75 and 100 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 150 and 200 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day. Experiment 2 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the daily frequency of feeding and evaluated four feeding frequencies: F1—feeding only once a day (09:00); (F2)—feeding twice a day (09:00 and 17:00); F3—feeding three times a day (09:00, 11:30 and 17:00); and F4—feeding four times a day (09:00, 11: 30, 14:00 and 17:00). Experiment 3 lasted 40 days and was conducted in a randomized design to evaluate three periods for the beginning of the feeding transition: WE10:AN for 10 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed until the end of the experimental period; WE15:AN for 15 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed; WE20:AN for 20 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed. The results of this study showed that, for the best development of the larvae, they should receive the feeding protocol 50−100−200 AN/L (P3) until the 20th day of exogenous feeding. From the 21st day, the transition to inert food should begin with 3 days of co‐feeding, and feeding during larviculture should be carried out at a frequency of twice a day; this protocol provided a good nutritional status for the larvae, as shown by the histological approach.
