To study the effect of bait type and three different lights - green, blue, and white, on the fishing efficiency of Largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) handline fishing, a total of 11,951 samples were collected from February to May 2022 in the northern coast of the Oman Sea, specifically at Remin Fishing Port. The results showed that only the season and bait had a significant effect on the weight and number of caught T. lepturus caught, while the type of lamp and its interactions did not have a significant effect. The highest CPUE was observed in the months of February and March, using Rastrelliger kanagurta as bait, green LED lamp, at a water depth of 60-110 meters, and a hook depth of 20-30 meters. The use of R. kanagurta bait, as opposed to Sardinella gibbosa, has resulted in a considerable rise in the catch of T. lepturus. This increase is evident in both the relative frequency and weight of the catch. This suggests that using R. kanagurta bait is beneficial for enhancing the efficiency of hook fishing for fishermen. Due to catch per unite effort and for efficiency of catch rate of T. lepturus in the area, it seems suitable bait, green light and suitable depth of the hook must be used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The largehead hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus, is an opportunistic, voracious, and piscivorous predator. Studies of fish feeding behavior based on the analysis of stomach contents are limited by the potential for the visual identification of the ingesta. However, molecular tools, in particular DNA barcoding, have been used successfully to identify stomach contents. When morphological analyses are not possible, molecular tools can precisely identify the components of the diet of a fish based on its stomach contents. This study used mini barcoding to identify food items ingested by T. lepturus off the northern coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. Forty-six sequences were obtained and were diagnosed as belonging to six different fish species: Pimelodus maculatus, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Isopisthus parvipinnis, Opisthonema oglinum, Harengula clupeola, and Pellona harroweri or as belonging to the genera Lycengraulis and Sardinella. Trichiurus lepturus is an opportunistic predator that will exploit an available prey of an appropriate size. The results indicate that these fish migrate to warmer waters, such as those found in estuarine environments, at certain times of the year, where they exploit prey species that reproduce in this environment. One example was Pimelodus maculatus, which was the prey species most exploited based on the analysis of the material collected.

The purpose of this study was to develop a framework that uses different forecasting methods and selects the best one with the least possible forecasting errors to predict harvesting of Largehead Hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) stocks in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman. In this study, eleven different forecasting techniques including decomposition method (Multiplicative and Additive), moving average, exponential smoothing (Single, Double), trend an analysis (Linear, Exponential, Quadratic, S-Curve), and Winters method (Multiplicative and Additive) were performed by statistical technique to predict harvesting of T. lepturus stocks in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman. The results of model Quadratic Trend Analysis (MAPE=2.77, MAD=0.10, MSD=0.01) were better than other non-combined prediction models based on fewer error values and therefore a prediction was accomplished by using the same model for a period of five years. Various models used to identify orders of the autoregressive integrated moving average, ARIMA, (p, d, q) based on the AIC and BIC, and ARIMA (0, 1, 1) had the best fit with the process of changing T. lepturus annual landings in the southern coastal waters based on the selection criteria. According to the results, the combined prediction model seems to be better than the non-combined prediction model, which predicts the future and its predictive numbers, indicating a low catch fluctuation of this species in Iranian southern waters.

Largehead hairtail (Trichiurus japonicus) in the China Seas shows an increasing catch trend, despite continued overexploitation, which could be attributed to improved recruitment as a result of strengthened early growth. To understand the early growth variability of largehead hairtail, we examined the linkages between early growth, as revealed by otolith microstructure, and the associated environmental variables over both spatial and temporal scales. Young‐of‐the‐Year largehead hairtail were collected from three regions in the Bohai, Yellow and East China Seas between 29° and 39° N. Daily increment widths of sagittal otoliths were measured and used as a proxy for somatic growth. We found two spawning cohorts, Spring‐ and Summer‐spawned cohorts, that showed latitudinal differences in both mean growth and growth pattern. The transition time from larval to juvenile stage was identified at around 40 days. Daily increment widths of two cohorts showed similar growth pattern in the first 40 days, while location had a marked effect on daily growth over 41–110 days. This suggests physiologically constrained growth pattern in larval stage, but more plastic growth subject to habitat‐specific influences in juvenile stage. The gradient forest analysis identified sea bottom temperature, vertical temperature gradient, and sea surface salinity, as the most important variables in determining early growth. Latitudinal differences in early growth pattern and their response to environmental variables suggest adaptive plasticity of early growth, which has notable implication for the management and sustainable utilization of this important but heavily exploited resource in the China Seas. Abstract Background The nematode species belonging to genus Anisakis occur at their third larval stage in numerous marine teleost fish species worldwide and known to cause accidental human infection through the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish or squids. They may also draw the attention of consumers because of the visual impact of both alive and dead worms. Therefore, the information on their geographical distribution and clear species identification is important for epidemiological survey and further prevention of human infection. Results For identification of anisakid nematodes species isolated from largehead hairtail (Trichiurus japonicus), polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of internal transcribed spacers of ribosomal DNA were conducted. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 gene was also sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis was conducted. From the largehead hairtail (n = 9), 1259 nematodes were isolated in total. Most of the nematodes were found encapsulated throughout the viscera (56.2 %, 708/1259) or moving freely in the body cavity (41.5 %, 523/1259), and only 0.3 % (4/1259) was found in the muscles. By PCR-RFLP, three different nematode species were identified. Anisakis pegreffii was the most dominantly found (98.7 %, 1243/1259) from the largehead hairtail, occupying 98.7 % (699/708) of the nematodes in the mesenteries and 98.1 % (513/523) in the body cavity. Hybrid genotype (Anisakis simplex × A. pegreffii) occupied 0.5 %, and Hysterothylacium sp. occupied 0.2 % of the nematodes isolated in this study. Conclusions The largehead hairtail may not significantly contribute accidental human infection of anisakid nematode third stage larvae because most of the nematodes were found from the viscera or body cavity, which are not consumed raw. But, a high prevalence of anisakid nematode larvae in the largehead hairtail is still in concern because they may raise food safety problems to consumers. Immediate evisceration or freezing of fish after catch will be necessary before consumption.

Largehead hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus, fishery status in the East China Sea was estimated using length frequencies data sets for 2001, 2004, 2009 and 2013 and catch and effort data from 2000~2012. Length frequency data for 8,350 individuals were collected using pair trawl nets. The predominant size classes in the catch comprised of 130-374 mm in 2001, 83-360 mm in 2004, 53-355 mm in 2009, and 23-389 mm in 2013. Growth parameters of asymptotic length ranged from 515.6 to 768.6 mm in 2004 and 2009, growth coefficients ranged from 0.230 to 0.685, and t0 from -0.654 to -0.494. The rate of total mortality (Z) ranged from 0.82 to 2.73 year-1 in 2013 and 2001, respectively. The exploitation rate was estimated to range from 0.660-0.797 year-1. Catch per unit effort estimates showed a consistent decline in catches. This study is a start to bridge the gap between data and information, allowing resource managers to determine management priorities for this economically and ecologically important species in the ECS. O pescado e seus derivados destacam-se como fonte de exposição e contaminação por metais pesados para o homem. A acumulação do metal mercúrio (Hg) ocorre de forma progressiva através da cadeia trófica e da água sendo o peixe-espada um carnívoro localizado no topo da cadeia alimentar ele pode representar o grau de contaminação da região estudada. Os objetivos neste estudo foram determinar os teores de mercúrio (Hg) e realizar análise histopatológica em órgãos da espécie Trichiurus lepturus em peixes comercializados na região da praia de Itaipu, Niterói - RJ. Foram analisados trinta e um animais, nos quais foram encontrados em musculatura e rim valores médios de Hg de 0,051±0,031µ g g-1 e 0,006±0,004µ g g-1, respectivamente. No pool de cérebro de todos os animais obteve-se o valor de 0,019µ g g-1. Os valores individuais mínimos e máximos de Hg na musculatura e no rim demonstraram uma ampla dispersão. Nas análises de correlação entre comprimento total e teores de Hg em musculatura, e peso total e teores de Hg em musculatura, foi verificada uma correlação positiva (r=0,85 e r=0,88 respectivamente) altamente significativa (P0,19). Nos testes de comparação múltipla entre os teores médios encontrados em musculatura, rim e cérebro, foi observada uma diferença altamente significativa entre os valores do músculo e do rim, assim como entre os do músculo e do cérebro (PFish is an important source of heavy metal exposition and contamination for human being. Accumulation of mercury (Hg) in men occurs by chronicle exposition, through the food chain, by ingestion of fish contaminated with mercury. Because of biomagnifications the carnivorous fish that is on the top of the food chain shows a higher concentration of mercury in their tissues and can represent the aquatic environmental contamination.
