Societal Impact Statement: Maize is the world's second most important agricultural crop. The cereal was unknown to Europeans before the end of the 15th century, but since its arrival in Europe, it has changed agriculture, food and landscapes. Terraces where maize was cultivated in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula contributed to the formation of local cultures and identities. The history of maize and maize landscape are mementos that help to recover traditional practices, fostering identities, and are crucial for the successful implementation of sustainable policies to provide prosperous futures. Summary: Maize (Zea mays L.) in the Iberian Peninsula embodies a history of landscape changes where the concepts of 'exotic', 'traditional' and 'hybrid' help to understand the engagements between landscape, farmers, agronomists (since the 19th and 20th centuries) and seeds. Today, landscapes reveal biophysical and ecological changes that reflect a panoply of intentions. A multitude of agents, and their interactions, acted upon those territories over time.Using historical sources from the leading institutions dedicated to agricultural research in the Iberian Peninsula, this paper aims to (1) contribute to a better understanding of the maize landscape and culture in the Iberian Peninsula and (2) interrogate how landscape changes (and the landscape history of maize) can frame local or regional heritage and identities reflecting customs or ways of life.The analysis unveils networks of knowledge, agricultural technologies and seed exchange. Politicians, economists, engineers, agronomists, farmers, governmental officials and agricultural industries planned and transformed traditional rural practices into modern and industrialised ones. Experts and politicians, willing to improve agricultural practices and seeds, using hybrid seeds or building new irrigation systems, led to deep social and landscape changes, allowing maize to cover territories far away from its traditional domains. Moreover, despite farmers' resistance, hybrid maize substituted landraces, eroding agrobiodiversity. Nowadays, the south and east regions of the Iberian Peninsula are the main producers of maize (hybrid), whereas in the Northwest maize is an occasional crop, being replaced by vineyards for economic reasons. Despite garlic (Allium sativum L.) being recognized as the second most important species in the Allium genus, a limited number of varieties are available worldwide. Aiming to develop new purple garlic varieties, a representative sample was used to determine the extent of phenotypic variability for commercially desirable characteristics. Initially, 360 bolting bulbs were selected based on their size and abundant external scales. After further assessment, 243 bulbs were discarded due to undesirable traits such as light purple color, numerous small cloves, or damage from Fusarium spp. and mites. Although garlic reproduces asexually, each bulb was considered to represent a distinct family. Thus, 117 families were planted in a randomized complete block design during the 2021–2022 growing season. Physiological, morphological, and phenological traits were assessed for each family, along with damages caused by pests and pathogens. As a result of these evaluations, 103 families were selected for a second trial the following season. Due to increased selection pressure, only 23 families remained in the program at the end of the second trial. High variability was observed for most traits, with a strong influence from family lineage. Environmental conditions significantly impacted the performance of the families, highlighting the need to evaluate them under diverse environments. Background: Wheat landraces are considered a valuable source of genetic diversity for breeding programs. It is useful to evaluate the genetic diversity in breeding studies such as marker-assisted selection (MAS), genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and genomic selection. In addition, constructing a core germplasm set that represents the genetic diversity of the entire variety set is of great significance for the efficient conservation and utilization of wheat landrace germplasms. Results: To understand the genetic diversity in wheat landrace, 2,023 accessions in the Jiangsu Provincial Crop Germplasm Resource Bank were used to explore the molecular diversity and population structure using the Illumina 15 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip. These accessions were divided into five subpopulations based on population structure, principal coordinate and kinship analysis. A significant variation was found within and among the subpopulations based on the molecular variance analysis (AMOVA). Subpopulation 3 showed more genetic variability based on the different allelic patterns (Na, Ne and I). The M strategy as implemented in MStratv 4.1 software was used to construct the representative core collection. A core collection with a total of 311 accessions (15.37%) was selected from the entire landrace germplasm based on genotype and 12 different phenotypic traits. Compared to the initial landrace collections, the core collection displayed higher gene diversity (0.31) and polymorphism information content (PIC) (0.25), and represented almost all phenotypic variation. Conclusions: A core collection comprising 311 accessions containing 100% of the genetic variation in the initial population was developed. Chili peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) are economically valuable crops belonging to the Solanaceae family and are popular worldwide because of their unique spiciness and flavor. In this study, differences in the metabolomes of landrace (Subicho) and disease-resistant pepper cultivars (Bulkala and Kaltanbaksa) widely grown in Korea are investigated using a 1H NMR-based metabolomics approach. Specific metabolites were abundant in the pericarp (GABA, fructose, and glutamine) and placenta (glucose, asparagine, arginine, and capsaicin), highlighting the distinct physiological and functional roles of these components. Both the pericarp and placenta of disease-resistant pepper cultivars contained higher levels of sucrose and hexoses and lower levels of alanine, proline, and threonine than the traditional landrace cultivar. These metabolic differences are linked to enhanced stress tolerance and the activation of defense pathways, imbuing these cultivars with improved resistance characteristics. The present study provides fundamental insights into the metabolic basis of disease resistance in chili peppers, emphasizing the importance of multi-resistant varieties to ensure sustainable agriculture and food security. Abstract Background Heat stress (HS) poses significant threats to the sustainability of livestock production. Genetically improving heat tolerance could enhance animal welfare and minimize production losses during HS events. Measuring phenotypic indicators of HS response and understanding their genetic background are crucial steps to optimize breeding schemes for improved climatic resilience. The identification of genomic regions and candidate genes influencing the traits of interest, including variants with pleiotropic effects, enables the refinement of genotyping panels used to perform genomic prediction of breeding values and contributes to unraveling the biological mechanisms influencing heat stress response. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to identify genomic regions, candidate genes, and potential pleiotropic variants significantly associated with indicators of HS response in lactating sows using imputed whole-genome sequence (WGS) data. Phenotypic records for 18 traits and genomic information from 1,645 lactating sows were available for the study. The genotypes from the PorcineSNP50K panel containing 50,703 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were imputed to WGS and after quality control, 1,622 animals and 7,065,922 SNPs were included in the analyses. Results A total of 1,388 unique SNPs located on sixteen chromosomes were found to be associated with 11 traits. Twenty gene ontology terms and 11 biological pathways were shown to be associated with variability in ear skin temperature, shoulder skin temperature, rump skin temperature, tail skin temperature, respiration rate, panting score, vaginal temperature automatically measured every 10 min, vaginal temperature measured at 0800 h, hair density score, body condition score, and ear area. Seven, five, six, two, seven, 15, and 14 genes with potential pleiotropic effects were identified for indicators of skin temperature, vaginal temperature, animal temperature, respiration rate, thermoregulatory traits, anatomical traits, and all traits, respectively. Conclusions Physiological and anatomical indicators of HS response in lactating sows are heritable but highly polygenic. The candidate genes found are associated with important gene ontology terms and biological pathways related to heat shock protein activities, immune response, and cellular oxidative stress. Many of the candidate genes with pleiotropic effects are involved in catalytic activities to reduce cell damage from oxidative stress and cellular mechanisms related to immune response.

Societal Impact Statement Summary Agricultural sustainability depends on the adaptation of crops to their local environment. Smallholder farmers who save seed provide an essential “evosystem” service by growing locally adapted seed varieties that can recruit biodiversity to enhance their growth and defense. While professional plant breeding has diverted evolutionary processes away from local adaptation, smallholder farmers, particularly those in centers of origin for crops, benefit society by selecting and propagating diverse crop varieties that allow local adaptation processes to perpetuate. Given that smallholders support society through the generation of evosystem services, changes in policy and practice are needed to support the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in ways that mitigate risk and recognize their important contributions to agricultural sustainability.Long‐term food security and agricultural sustainability depend on protecting the eco‐evolutionary processes that select for local adaptation in crops. Since seed systems structure how people acquire seed, institutional and social changes influence evolutionary processes within agroecosystems. Since World War II, the rise of professional breeding has bifurcated seed systems into traditional and formal systems, which has negatively affected agrobiodiversity, crop evolution, and agricultural sustainability. In traditional seed systems, farmers often save seed from plants that best provide desired qualities, selecting landrace crop varieties to adapt to local environmental conditions. In formal or centralized seed systems, farmers buy seeds bred primarily for maximizing yield under ideal conditions. When farmers source seeds externally, evolutionary processes underlying local adaptation are disrupted. Here, we argue that traditional seed systems provide important evosystem services, or the evolutionary processes resulting from the maintenance and use of genetic diversity that benefit society. We present a framework on how seed systems influence the evolutionary processes that enable local adaptation, which is necessary for sustainable agriculture. We discuss how changes in human values underlying traditional and formal seed systems can alter evolutionary processes that underlie local adaptation. We conclude that developing policies that support people in managing ecological and evolutionary processes within seed systems is needed to address current and future challenges of global food security and agricultural sustainability. Maize productivity in the central belt plays a significant role in the food security of China. With good adaptability and disease resistance, landrace germplasm is important for maize improvement. A total of 246 landrace accessions were collected from the maize belts in central China and genotyped with the SLAF-seq (Specific-Locus Amplified Fragment Sequencing) method, and 144,650 SNPs were obtained for each accession. The results showed that the landrace accessions could be divided into three major groups. In the cluster results, Group I included 64 accessions, which mainly belonged to the landrace of White horse teeth; Group II had 71 accessions, which mainly belonged to the lantern red landraces; the rest of the 116 accessions were clustered as Group III, including a variety of types landraces and seven indicator inbred lines. In the results of structure and multidimensional scaling, the accessions' attribution differed with the clusters, the main reason for which is the attribution change in intermediate germplasms. Linkage disequilibrium decay distance was 0.98 kb, which was much lower than that of temperate and tropical maize inbred lines, indicated the much higher genetic diversity of landrace germplasms. Paleogenomics provides new ways to study the cultural history and genetic diversity of landrace fruit crops. Paleogenomics holds the potential to unlock valuable genetic insights from extinct or ancestral fruit-crop cultivars. This information enables the reconstruction of important chapters in plant domestication and can track their ways of dispersal, introgression, and potential adaptations. Case studies on grapevines, date palms, and tomatoes, presented in this review highlight the power of paleogenomics in revealing historical aspects. The examples discussed demonstrate the importance of legacy/heritage cultivars for enhancing food security and agricultural sustainability in different environmental conditions over time. Abundant and plentiful fruit crops are threatened by the loss of diverse legacy cultivars which are being replaced by a limited set of high-yielding ones. This article delves into the potential of paleogenomics that utilizes ancient DNA analysis to revive lost diversity. By focusing on grapevines, date palms, and tomatoes, recent studies showcase the effectiveness of paleogenomic techniques in identifying and understanding genetic traits crucial for crop resilience, disease resistance, and nutritional value. The approach not only tracks landrace dispersal and introgression but also sheds light on domestication events. In the face of major future environmental challenges, integrating paleogenomics with modern breeding strategies emerges as a promising avenue to significantly bolster fruit crop sustainability. A growing interest in the recovery and enhancement of crops, particularly local varieties such as 'Caaveiro' wheat, has been observed. This study aims to investigate the impact of cultivation systems (organic versus conventional) on the nutritional quality of 'Caaveiro' flour and breads protected by the PGI "Pan Galego," employing two fermentation methods (sourdough versus sourdough and biological yeast). Organic flour exhibited significantly higher levels of moisture, fat, sucrose, phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), and copper (Cu) while also exhibiting a lower total starch and zinc (Zn) content. Organic bread, produced using both fermentation methods, demonstrated significantly higher protein, carbohydrate, total, resistant, and rapidly digestible starch, ash, Na, P, iron (Fe), and Cu content. Additionally, they contained less moisture compared to conventional bread. Despite variations in nutritional characteristics based on the cultivation system, the organic approach proved effective at producing high-quality products with a positive environmental impact, which is highly appreciated by consumers. This study aims to estimate the connectedness rating (CR) of Korean swine breeding herds. Using 104,380 performance and 83,200 reproduction records from three swine breeds (Yorkshire, Landrace and Duroc), the CR was estimated for two traits: average daily gain (ADG) and number born alive (NBA) in eight breeding herds in the Republic of Korea (hereafter, Korea). The average CR for ADG in the Yorkshire breed ranges from 1.32% to 28.5% depending on the farm. The average CR for NBA in the Yorkshire herd ranges from 0% to 12.79%. A total of 60% of Yorkshire and Duroc herds satisfied the preconditions suggested for genetic evaluation among the herds. The precondition for the genetic evaluation of CR for ADG, as a productive trait, was higher than 3% and that of NBA, as a reproductive trait, was higher than 1.5%. The ADG in the Yorkshire herds showed the highest average CR. However, the average CR of ADG in the Landrace herds was lower than the criterion of the precondition. The prediction error variance of the difference (PEVD) was employed to assess the validation of the CR, as PEVDs exhibit fluctuations that are coupled with the CR across the herds. A certain degree of connectedness is essential to estimate breeding value comparisons between pig herds. This study suggests that it is possible to evaluate the genetic performance together for ADG and NBA in the Yorkshire herds since the preconditions were satisfied for these four herds. It is also possible to perform a joint genetic analysis of the ADG records of all Duroc herds since the preconditions were also satisfied. This study provides new insight into understanding the genetic connectedness of Korean pig breeding herds. CR could be utilized to accelerate the genetic progress of Korean pig breeding herds.

Abstract Clinically, Landrace pigs are more susceptible to porcine circovirus-associated diseases (PCVADs) than Piétrain pigs. We previously found that porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) can infect T-lymphoblasts. The present study examined the replication kinetics of six PCV2 strains in the lymphoblasts of Landrace and Piétrain pigs. The results showed that T-lymphoblasts from Landrace pigs are much more susceptible to PCV2 infection than those from Piétrain pigs. In addition, PCV2 replication was strain-dependent. PCV2 binding to T-lymphoblasts was partially mediated by chondroitin sulfate (CS) and dermatan sulfate (DS). Phosphacan, an effective internalization mediator in monocytes that contains several CS chains, was also demonstrated to be involved in PCV2 internalization. Viral binding and internalization were not different between the two breeds, however, the subsequent step, the disassembly was. Although inhibition of serine proteases blocked PCV2 replication in both Landrace and Piétrain pigs, this only occurred at a neutral pH in Piétrain pigs, whereas this occurred also at a low pH in Landrace. This suggested that more proteases can cleave PCV2 in Landrace lymphoblasts than in Piétrain lymphoblasts, explaining the better replication. Through co-localization studies of viral particles with endo-lysosomal markers, and quantitative analysis of organelle sizes during viral internalization, it was observed that PCV2 may exhibit a higher propensity for viral escape from late endosomes in Landrace pigs (smaller) compared to Piétrain pigs. These results provide new understandings of the different PCV2 susceptibility in Landrace and Piétrain pigs.

This study was carried out to explore the significance of morphology-based selection for breeding, using a case study of indigenous buckwheat landrace from Korea. Although many studies have utilized molecular methods to investigate germplasm diversity, this research underscores the often-overlooked importance of morphology-based selection in breeding strategies. Furthermore, it highlights the necessity of considering geographical information only when it accurately reflects the actual environment. The study collected and analyzed five traits from 96 samples across 27 varieties. The hypothesis was that these 27 samples might have been grouped by region due to similar environmental conditions. This hypothesis was tested using a dendrogram, clustering, correlation analysis of each trait, and PCA analysis. The results showed that morphological traits are a crucial factor in germplasm or landrace selection and that they should be considered the basic information for breeding purposes. Morphological traits were found to be random regardless of the locations where they were collected, indicating that they should be used to determine breeding targets rather than geographic locations. The study suggested that understanding the physiological traits of specific germplasm groups can accelerate breeding efforts. Overall, this study provided important insights into the selection of germplasm or landrace for breeding purposes, highlighting the importance of morphology-based selection and the need to consider environmental factors.

"Gadmal" is one of the important pulse crops of the local people living in the southern parts of Betul, Madhya Pradesh, India. An expedition was undertaken in December, 2022 to gather germplasm of gadmal from Betul, a district lying almost wholly on the Satpura plateau. From the results of a structured questionnaire administered to gadmal cultivating farmers in targeted villages, it seemed that gadmal is the pulse crop cultivated in this region by tribal farmers. Gadmal is being used as split pulse, chapati and vada preparations by the farmers. The food items and recipes prepared from the gadmal are traditionally offered to tribal Gods. However, the area under this crop is shrinking due to severe infestation of yellow mosaic disease. Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR) has collected and conserved a specimen in the National Herbarium of Cultivated Plants (Herbarium specimen, HS25749). On-spot evaluation of morphological traits was done across the locations. The study was undertaken for preliminary morphological, biochemical and molecular assessment. Based on preliminary evaluation, gadmal seems to be closer to blackgram than other cultivated Vigna species. However, detailed taxonomic studies are required to validate the identity using morpho-molecular tools. An exploratory note was presented with indigenous traditional knowledge along with cultural practices and economic uses. The work aimed to facilitate germplasm collection, detailed evaluation and systematic study of this valuable material with the prospects of crop diversification and value addition. The preliminary morphological, biochemical and molecular profiling of collected accessions being undertaken by us will provide avenues for better utilization and recognition of this crop. In the production of small-seed peanut cultivars in South China, landraces with high plants and bred cultivars with dwarf plants were both planted. Thus a differential fertilization strategy had to be figured out according to their nitrogen requirements. In this study, the main landrace with high plants Anhua Xiaozi and improved dwarf cultivar Xianghei Xiaoguo were used as materials. Four compound fertilization rates were set including 0, 450, 600, and 750 kg/hm², representing soil background (CK), low (F30), medium (F40), and high (F50) fertilizer levels. Nitrogen content, accumulation, and distribution were recorded at 4 growth stages. Results showed that, in high landrace Anhua Xiaozi, N content were in the order of pod> leaf> root> stem, while those of dwarf cultivar Xianghei Xiaoguo were in leaf> pod> root> stem. N content in leaves and roots of Anhua Xiaozi was less than dwarf cultivar Xianghei Xiaoguo. The opposite trend was found in stems and pods. The influence degree of increasing fertilizer on N content was in the order of stem> leaf> root> pod, which was beneficial to N assimilation and absorption in vegetative organs. N accumulation in different organs of the 2 materials was leaf> pod> stem> root. Except the seedling stage, N accumulations of the whole plant, leaf and stem in other stages were larger in Anhua Xiaozi stem. N accumulations were both higher in Anhua Xiaozi pods and roots, but only in roots during seedling and podding stages. Fertilization was beneficial to N accumulation in early stages. N distribution rate of both varieties was the highest in leaves, and then in pods and stems. N distribution rate in higher variety were larger in aboveground parts, while the underground parts was the opposite. It indicated that N absorbed by dwarf variety was more conducive to transport to pods. N production efficiency was higher in dwarf Xianghei Xiaoguo. N production efficiency and N partial factor productivity of F40 and F30 treatments were both high, indicated that excessive fertilization decreased N use efficiency. In conclusion, lower response of N accumulation to fertilizer increase was found in dwarf cultivar Xianghei Xiaoguo, with less total accumulation but more distribution in pods. Therefore, in barren and acidic red soil regions in South China, peanut plant architecture should be considered during fertilizer determination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This suggested that more proteases can cleave PCV2 in Landrace lymphoblasts than in Piétrain lymphoblasts, explaining the better replication. Through co-localization studies of viral particles with endo-lysosomal markers, and quantitative analysis of organelle sizes during viral internalization, it was observed that PCV2 may exhibit a higher propensity for viral escape from late endosomes in Landrace pigs (smaller) compared to Piétrain pigs. • The germination of cannabis treatments varied with landrace and treatments. • H 2 SO 4 , GA 3 , and KNO 3 enhanced the germination capacity of cannabis landraces. • Control produced vigorous seedlings compared dormancy-breaking pre-treatments. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of different pre-treatments for dormancy breaking and seed germination of five cannabis landraces. These landraces were collected from local growers in three regions of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa, namely, Bergville (B), Hammersdale (H), and Ladysmith (L). Each genotype was assigned an alphabet and number based on where the seed material was collected. The five landraces were as follows, 'B1', 'K1', 'H1', 'L1', and 'L2'. The study was conducted using various pre-treatments, including potassium nitrate (KNO 3), hydrochloric acid (HCL), hot water (HW) at 70 °C, nitric acid (HNO 3), dry prechilling at 10 °C, gibberellic acid (GA 3), sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4), and water, which served as the control. Before the germination test, the seed viability of cannabis landraces was assessed using the tetrazolium chloride (TCC) test. Afterward, the seeds were germinated in Petri dishes with cotton pads moistened with distilled water for five (5) days. The study was later validated under tunnel conditions. The parameters such as germination percentage, germination rate, seedling length, and seed vigour index of the germinated seeds were then measured. The landraces, dormancy breaking treatments, and their interactions showed significant differences (p < 0.001) in germination percentage, germination rate index, seedling length, and seed vigour index under both laboratory and tunnel conditions. In summary, GA 3 , KNO 3 and prechilling were the most effective pre-treatments to improve the germination and seedling growth of cannabis genotypes and breaking seed dormancy. The use of biostimulants consisting of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has been rapidly expanding in horticulture in recent years. In the current study, a novel mix of six Bacillus sp. strains (B. subtilis, B. pumilus, B. megaterium, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. velezensis, B. licheniformis) was tested as a PGPR biostimulant in two experiments with zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo L.). The first experiment took place in greenhouse soil in winter, while the second experiment was conducted in an open field during summer. In both experiments, seeds of the local landrace "Kompokolokytho" and the commercial hybrid "ARO-800" were either inoculated or non-inoculated with the PGPR biostimulant. The application of the six Bacillus sp. strains increased both the vegetative growth and the yield of zucchini squash, and these effects were associated with significantly higher shoot phosphorus levels in both experiments and both genotypes. Furthermore, at the end of the cultivation, the colony-forming units of Bacillus sp. were appreciably higher in plants originating from inoculated compared to non-inoculated seeds, indicating that the tested mix of Bacillus sp. can be successfully applied through seed inoculation. "ARO-800" produced more vegetative and fruit biomass than "Κompokolokytho" under greenhouse cropping conditions, while in the open field crop, both genotypes performed equally. Presumably, this response occurred because "ARO-800" did not express its full yield potential in the open field due to stress imposed by the high summer temperatures, while the local landrace, which is traditionally grown in open fields, may be more resilient to stress conditions frequently encountered in open fields. Nowadays, there is a global surge in interest surrounding novel foods, particularly sprouts, microgreens, and baby leaves, attributed to their rich content of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic derivatives, glucosinolates, and vitamins. This study delves into the impact of exogenously applied melatonin on novel foods derived from Brassica oleracea L. Two distinct cultivars of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck), namely Sicilian sprouting broccoli (Broccolo nero) and a commercial variety (Cavolo Broccolo Ramoso Calabrese), were compared across the sprouts, microgreens, and baby leaves stages, adhering to organic farming practices. Various doses of melatonin (0, 50, and 100 µM) were administered at each harvesting stage. Plantlets were collected at different growth stages and assessed for key morphometric traits, including the weight, hypocotyl length, and cotyledon dimensions during the sprouts stage. For microgreens, the number and dimensions of the true leaves were recorded, while for baby leaves, the stem length was additionally measured. The analysis of glucosinolates was carried out using a high-performance liquid chromatograph with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The results revealed significant variations among the experimental factors considered. Melatonin application significantly influenced the morphometric parameters at different growth stages, exhibiting notable variations in the weight, hypocotyl length, cotyledon width, and leaf width. The GLSs profile exhibited significant variations between the different growth stages and genotypes studied. Particularly noteworthy was the tendency for the GLSs content to be higher during the sprouts stage compared to the baby leaves stage, ranging from 24.07 to 4.61 µmol g−1 d.w. from sprouts to baby leaves, respectively. The soybean is an important feed, industrial raw material, and food crop in the world due to its rich components. There is a long history of soybean cultivation with different types and rich resources in the Zhejiang province of China. It is important to understand genetic diversity as well as phenotypic variation for soybean breeding. The objective of this study was to analyze both genetic and phenotypic characteristics of the 78 soybean landraces collected, and to explore a potential advantage of germplasm resources for further application. These 78 autumn-type soybean landraces have been propagated, identified, and evaluated in both 2021 and 2022. There were agronomic, quality, and genetic variations according to the comprehensive analyses. There was a good consistency between seed size and seed coat color. There were significant differences of seed protein, fat, and sugar contents based upon the seed coat color. These soybean landraces were genotyped using 42 simple sequence repeat markers and then clustered into two groups. The two groups had a consistency with the seed coat color. This study gave us a combined understanding of both the phenotypic variation and the genetic diversity of the soybean landraces. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a crop of high nutritional interest which is widespread throughout the world as a result of which it is considered as a potential crop for ensuring future food security. The effect of organic and conventional farming systems on the nutritional and functional composition of two cultivars of market class fabada (a landrace and a modern elite cultivar) is described. The findings of our study have shown that the common beans from organic farming have a higher content of protein, phenolic compounds, and relevant microelements such as iron and zinc than the seeds from conventional farming trial. However, in conventional crops a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lower concentrations of phytic acid and raffinose oligosaccharides were also detected. In contrast, no significant differences were detected in the proximate composition of the two genotypes tested, nor in their antioxidant activity or levels of phenolic compounds. The elite cultivar maintains the nutritional characteristics of the landrace from which it derives, suggesting the genomic regions modified in the improvement do not play an important role in their genetic control. Introduction: Climate change is likely to lead to not only increased global temperatures but also a more variable climate where unseasonal periods of heat stress are more prevalent. This has been evidenced by the observation of spring-time temperatures approaching 40°C in some of the main springwheat producing countries, such as the USA, in recent years. With an optimum growth temperature of around 20°C, wheat is particularly prone to damage by heat stress. A warming climate with increasingly common fluctuations in temperature therefore threatens wheat crops and subsequently the lives and livelihoods of billions of people who depend on the crop for food. To futureproof wheat against a variable climate, a better understanding of the response to early heat stress is required. Methods: Here, we utilised DESeq2 to identify 7,827 genes which were differentially expressed in wheat landraces after early heat stress exposure. Candidate hub genes, which may regulate the transcriptional response to early heat stress, were identified via weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), and validated by qRT-PCR. Results: Two of the most promising candidate hub genes (TraesCS3B02G409300 and TraesCS1B02G384900) may downregulate the expression of genes involved in the drought, salinity, and cold responses—genes which are unlikely to be required under heat stress—as well as photosynthesis genes and stress hormone signalling repressors, respectively. We also suggest a role for a poorly characterised sHSP hub gene (TraesCS4D02G212300), as an activator of the heat stress response, potentially inducing the expression of a vast suite of heat shock proteins and transcription factors known to play key roles in the heat stress response. Discussion: The present work represents an exploratory examination of the heatinduced transcriptional change in wheat landrace seedlings and identifies several candidate hub genes which may act as regulators of this response and, thus, may be targets for breeders in the production of thermotolerant wheat varieties. Construction of minicore germplasm of Shanxi foxtail millet landraces aims to provide germplasm basis for identification of target traits and mining of candidate genes of foxtail millet. In this study, totally 15 agronomic and quality traits of 598 core germplasm of foxtail millet in Shanxi were uesd, including heading date, plant height, stem node number, neck length, leaf length, leaf width, panicle length, diameter of panicle, diameter of main stem, panicle weight, grain weight per panicle, branch number per panicle, grain number per branch, 1000-grain weight, and protein content. QGAStation software was used to conduct sampling analysis of minicore germplasm construction, whole genome resequencing technology for removing closely related germplasm to construct minicore germplasm. The results showed that the minicore germplasm of foxtail millet landrace in Shanxi contained 322 accessions. The comparative results between minicore germplasm and original germplasm showed no significant difference in the mean value and the variance of the traits. The mean value difference(MD) and the variance difference(VD) were 0, the range coincidence rate(CR) was 98.36%, the coefficient of variation change rate(VR) was 104.19%, and the genetic diversity index change rate(GR) was 94.81%. Agronomic biofortification of crops is a promising approach for the accumulation of Si in plant organs and can be achieved through the application of Si-containing fertilizers in the nutrient solution (NS) using a soilless technique. In the present research, a local variety of Cucumis melo L. called Carosello and two tomato hybrids, 'Alfa 200' (TA) and 'Versus' (TV), were cultivated in a floating system with three levels of Si (0, 50, and 100 mg·L−1) in the NS with the aim to study the Si translocation/accumulation in leaves, stems, and roots of these genotypes. In general, by adding Si to the NS, Si accumulation in plants increased. Regarding Si translocation, it was found that Carosello exhibited a better translocation capacity than tomato hybrids, and Si movement from roots to shoots was very much dependent on tomato genotypes. With the highest Si content in the NS, TA had a similar Si concentration in leaves and stems, while TV showed a greater Si concentration in leaves. In conclusion, Carosello landrace is confirmed as a good Si accumulator, while the tomato is confirmed as a species with low Si accumulation capacity. Abstract Background Non-additive genetic effects are often ignored in livestock genetic evaluations. However, fitting them in the models could improve the accuracy of genomic breeding values. Furthermore, non-additive genetic effects contribute to heterosis, which could be optimized through mating designs. Traits related to fitness and adaptation, such as heat tolerance, tend to be more influenced by non-additive genetic effects. In this context, the primary objectives of this study were to estimate variance components and assess the predictive performance of genomic prediction of breeding values based on alternative models and two independent datasets, including performance records from a purebred pig population and heat tolerance indicators recorded in crossbred lactating sows. Results Including non-additive genetic effects when modelling performance traits in purebred pigs had no effect on the residual variance estimates for most of the traits, but lower additive genetic variances were observed, especially when additive-by-additive epistasis was included in the models. Furthermore, including non-additive genetic effects did not improve the prediction accuracy of genomic breeding values, but there was animal re-ranking across the models. For the heat tolerance indicators recorded in a crossbred population, most traits had small non-additive genetic variance with large standard error estimates. Nevertheless, panting score and hair density presented substantial additive-by-additive epistatic variance. Panting score had an epistatic variance estimate of 0.1379, which accounted for 82.22% of the total genetic variance. For hair density, the epistatic variance estimates ranged from 0.1745 to 0.1845, which represent 64.95–69.59% of the total genetic variance. Conclusions Including non-additive genetic effects in the models did not improve the accuracy of genomic breeding values for performance traits in purebred pigs, but there was substantial re-ranking of selection candidates depending on the model fitted. Except for panting score and hair density, low non-additive genetic variance estimates were observed for heat tolerance indicators in crossbred pigs.

Abstract Background Decades after their first commercial release, many theoretical assumptions are still taken for granted in the deployment of genetically modified (GM) crops. Theoretically, in the case of maize, active transcription of the cry1Ab transgene would result in dose-dependent production of the insecticidal Cry1Ab protein, which would in turn induce dose-dependent mortality on lepidopteran pests. We produced data to realistically approach this question by using a model that includes two genetic background contexts from two geographical provenances in Brazil and South Africa, and two lepidopteran pests (Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera littoralis). However, in this study, the effect of insect herbivory was superimposed to investigate possible stress-induced effects in transgene expression at three levels: mRNA, protein and bioactivity. Results Overall, we found that herbivore damage by H. armigera was reflected only at the translational level, with a higher level of Cry1Ab protein measured in the Brazilian crosses under herbivore stress. On the other hand, compared to non-stress growing conditions, the herbivore damage by S. littoralis was not directly reflected in mRNA, protein or bioactivity in the South African crosses. Conclusions The differences between South African and Brazilian genetic backgrounds, and between the stressor effect of the two herbivores used, highlight the complexity of transgene expression at the agroecological level.

Despite garlic (Allium sativum L.) being recognized as the second most important species in the Allium genus, a limited number of varieties are available worldwide. Aiming to develop new purple garlic varieties, a representative sample was used to determine the extent of phenotypic variability for commercially desirable characteristics. Initially, 360 bolting bulbs were selected based on their size and abundant external scales. After further assessment, 243 bulbs were discarded due to undesirable traits such as light purple color, numerous small cloves, or damage from Fusarium spp. and mites. Although garlic reproduces asexually, each bulb was considered to represent a distinct family. Thus, 117 families were planted in a randomized complete block design during the 2021–2022 growing season. Physiological, morphological, and phenological traits were assessed for each family, along with damages caused by pests and pathogens. As a result of these evaluations, 103 families were selected for a second trial the following season. Due to increased selection pressure, only 23 families remained in the program at the end of the second trial. High variability was observed for most traits, with a strong influence from family lineage. Environmental conditions significantly impacted the performance of the families, highlighting the need to evaluate them under diverse environments. The high variability within the selected sample indicates a strong potential for developing new garlic varieties.

Populations are locally adapted when they exhibit higher fitness than foreign populations in their native habitat. Maize landrace adaptations to highland and lowland conditions are of interest to researchers and breeders. To determine the prevalence and strength of local adaptation in maize landraces, we performed a reciprocal transplant experiment across an elevational gradient in Mexico. We grew 120 landraces, grouped into four populations (Mexican Highland, Mexican Lowland, South American Highland, South American Lowland), in Mexican highland and lowland common gardens and collected phenotypes relevant to fitness and known highland-adaptive traits such as anthocyanin pigmentation and macrohair density. 67k DArTseq markers were generated from field specimens to allow comparisons between phenotypic patterns and population genetic structure. We found phenotypic patterns consistent with local adaptation, though these patterns differ between the Mexican and South American populations. Quantitative trait differentiation (Q ST) was greater than neutral allele frequency differentiation (F ST) for many traits, signaling directional selection between pairs of populations. All populations exhibited higher fitness metric values when grown at their native elevation, and Mexican landraces had higher fitness than South American landraces when grown in these Mexican sites. As environmental distance between landraces' native collection sites and common garden sites increased, fitness values dropped, suggesting landraces are adapted to environmental conditions at their natal sites. Correlations between fitness and anthocyanin pigmentation and macrohair traits were stronger in the highland site than the lowland site, supporting their status as highland-adaptive. These results give substance to the long-held presumption of local adaptation of New World maize landraces to elevation and other environmental variables across North and South America.

We investigated the genetic basis of teat number in sows, which is an important factor in their reproductive performance. We collected genotyping data from 20 353 pigs of three breeds (Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire) using the Porcine SNP60K Bead Chip, and analyzed phenotypic data from 240 603 pigs. The heritability values of total teat number were 0.33 ± 0.02, 0.51 ± 0.01 and 0.50 ± 0.01 in Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire pigs, respectively. A genome‐wide association study was used to identify significant chromosomal regions associated with teat number in SSC7 and SSC9 in Duroc pig, SSC3, SSC7 and SSC18 in Landrace pig, and SSC7, SSC8 and SSC10 in Yorkshire pig. Among the markers, MARC0038565, located between the vertnin (VRTN) and synapse differentiation‐inducing 1‐like (SYNDIG1L) genes, showed the strongest association in the Duroc pig and was significant in all breeds. In Landrace and Yorkshire pigs, the most significant markers were located within the apoptosis resistant E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 1 (AREL1) and latent transforming growth factor beta‐binding protein 2 (LTBP2) genes in SSC7, respectively. VRTN is a candidate gene regulating the teat number. Most markers were located in SSC7, indicating their significance in determining teat number and their potential as valuable genomic selection targets for improving this trait. Extensive linkage disequilibrium blocks were identified in SSC7, supporting their use in genomic selection strategies. Our study provides valuable insights into the genetic architecture of teat numbers in pigs, and helps identify candidate genes and genomic regions that may contribute to this economically important trait. Diversity is essential to climate resilience in food and farming. Traditionally, agrobiodiversity has been cultivated and sustained through communities' relationships with seeds. A fluid process of saving, preserving, and exchanging seeds allows for regional adaptation and transformation. This process results in seed diversity at the crop, variety, and genetic level. Over the last century, agrobiodiversity has declined at an alarming rate, and simultaneously there has been an erosion of community seed-keeping practices. A reaction to these interrelated crises has been an increased push to preserve biodiversity through institutional seed preservation efforts (also called ex situ preservation), which focus on genetic preservation of seeds in controlled environments. The seeds are genetic resources that are made available to plant breeders, who solve agronomic problems by creating improved cultivars for farmers. This is very different from community seed-keeping (also called in situ preservation), which values seed-people relationships and fosters natural agrobiodiversity and regional adaptation. Seeds are seen in direct connection to food, and saved for immediate and practical reasons like yield, flavor, and resistance to biotic stressors. In traditional communities, seeds are often perceived as kin, as ancestors or living beings with both histories and futures. For institutional seed preservation, collecting and maintaining seed diversity is an imperative insurance policy against future challenges. Ironically, this model erodes community-based seed-keeping efforts and increases dependence on institutional seed preservation to maintain genetic diversity. In this paper, we explore declining agrobiodiversity and community seed-keeping and share our experiences working with a diverse range of varieties from The Heirloom Collard Project (HCP). We propose that radical seed diversity can jump-start autonomous, community-based seed-keeping efforts, increasing agrobiodiversity and, ultimately, the climate resilience of food systems. Common cutworm (CCW) is an omnivorous insect causing severe yield losses in soybean crops. The seedling-stage mini-tray identification system with the damaged leaf percentage (DLP) as an indicator was used to evaluate antixenosis against CCW in the Chinese soybean landrace population (CSLRP) under three environments. Using the innovative restricted two-stage multi-locus genome-wide association study procedure (RTM-GWAS), 86 DLP QTLs with 243 alleles (2–11/QTL) were identified, including 66 main-effect loci with 203 alleles and 57 QTL-environment interaction loci with 172 alleles. Among the main-effect loci, 12 large-contribution loci (R2 ≥ 1%) explained 25.45% of the phenotypic variation (PV), and 54 small-contribution loci (R2 < 1%) explained 16.55% of the PV. This indicates that the CSLRP can be characterized with a DLP QTL-allele system complex that has not been found before, except for a few individual QTLs without alleles involved. From the DLP QTL-allele matrix, the recombination potentials expressed in the 25th percentile of the DLP of all possible crosses were predicted to be reduced by 41.5% as the maximum improvement and 14.2% as the maximum transgression, indicating great breeding potential in the antixenosis of the CSLRP. From the QTLs, 62 candidate genes were annotated, which were involved in eight biological function categories as a gene network of the DLP. Changing from susceptible to moderate plus resistant varieties in the CSLRP, 26 QTLs had 32 alleles involved, in which 19 genes were annotated from 25 QTL-alleles, including eight increased negative alleles on seven loci and 11 decreased positive alleles on 11 loci, showing the major genetic constitution changes for the antixenosis enhancement at the seedling stage in the CSLRP. The study examined effects of feeding iso-nutrient (150 g CP, 17.3 MJ ME kg−1) raw (RCP), sprouted (SPC), or roasted (RSCP) cowpea diets to Windsnyer (W), Large White (LW) × Landrace (LR), and the 3-way crossbred (W × LW × LR) growing pigs. Diet dry matter (DM) digestibility was estimated using standard, 3-step (gastric, small intestines, colon) in vitro digestion. Dietary in vivo nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance were evaluated using 3 weaned pigs of each genotype. Pigs were housed in individual metabolic cages. The diets were assigned to pigs in a 3 × 3 change-over factorial experiment within three balanced, 3 × 3 Latin squares. Feeding periods consisted of 7 days adaption + 5 days’ measurement of feed intake, and the total faecal and urine excretions. The SPC diet increased step 3 in vitro DM digestibility compared to RSCP (P < 0.05). Metabolic size-scaled feed consumption was higher on the RCP compared to the RSCP diet (P < 0.05). Cowpea processing reduced apparent DM and ash digestibility (P < 0.05). LW × LR pigs exhibited lower digestibility of ash and acid detergent fiber (ADF) compared to 3-way crossbred pigs (P < 0.05). Significant genotype-diet interactions were observed for nitrogen intake (P < 0.0001), digestible nitrogen (P = 0.043), urinary nitrogen output (P < 0.0001), faecal nitrogen output (P < 0.0001), total nitrogen excretion (P < 0.0001), and nitrogen retention (P < 0.001). The biological value of feed protein was higher for W pigs than 3-way crossbred pigs (P < 0.05). Genotype-diet interactions suggested unique digestive and, or metabolic adaptive traits in the utilization of the differently processed cowpeas, which need further investigation. The study examined 23 landrace pumpkin seed samples from six Sudanese states (South Kordofan (SK), North Kordofan (NK), Gazira (GZ), Gadarif (GF), White Nile (WN), and Blue Nile (BN)), focusing on their composition and physical characteristics. The results showed significant differences in oil percentages, with SK having the highest percentage. Protein content varied between 16.91 % and 26.13 % in NK. The proximate composition of pumpkin seeds also varied significantly. The study found a significant difference in fatty acids, with polyunsaturated fatty acids having 37.02 % and monounsaturated fatty acids having 27.50 %. The total unsaturated fatty acids ranged from 55.2 % to 70.2 %, while the total saturated fatty acids ranged from 29.45 % to 45.27 %. Seed length, width, and thickness varied, with WN having the highest kernel percentage (78.45 %). Several minerals were extracted from the seeds, with potassium being the most abundant element, ranging from 946 to 1100 mg 100 g-1. Analysis revealed that the seeds contained a rich source of zinc (Zn), ranging from 8.4 mg 100 g-1 to 16.21 mg 100 g-1. The study concluded that Sudanese landrace pumpkin seeds are valuable for edible oil and protein fortification due to their high levels of oil, protein, and minerals.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a crop of high nutritional interest which is widespread throughout the world as a result of which it is considered as a potential crop for ensuring future food security. The effect of organic and conventional farming systems on the nutritional and functional composition of two cultivars of market class fabada (a landrace and a modern elite cultivar) is described. The findings of our study have shown that the common beans from organic farming have a higher content of protein, phenolic compounds, and relevant microelements such as iron and zinc than the seeds from conventional farming trial. However, in conventional crops a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lower concentrations of phytic acid and raffinose oligosaccharides were also detected. In contrast, no significant differences were detected in the proximate composition of the two genotypes tested, nor in their antioxidant activity or levels of phenolic compounds. The elite cultivar maintains the nutritional characteristics of the landrace from which it derives, suggesting the genomic regions modified in the improvement do not play an important role in their genetic control.

IntroductionClimate change is likely to lead to not only increased global temperatures but also a more variable climate where unseasonal periods of heat stress are more prevalent. This has been evidenced by the observation of spring-time temperatures approaching 40°C in some of the main spring-wheat producing countries, such as the USA, in recent years. With an optimum growth temperature of around 20°C, wheat is particularly prone to damage by heat stress. A warming climate with increasingly common fluctuations in temperature therefore threatens wheat crops and subsequently the lives and livelihoods of billions of people who depend on the crop for food. To futureproof wheat against a variable climate, a better understanding of the response to early heat stress is required.MethodsHere, we utilised DESeq2 to identify 7,827 genes which were differentially expressed in wheat landraces after early heat stress exposure. Candidate hub genes, which may regulate the transcriptional response to early heat stress, were identified via weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), and validated by qRT-PCR.ResultsTwo of the most promising candidate hub genes (TraesCS3B02G409300 and TraesCS1B02G384900) may downregulate the expression of genes involved in the drought, salinity, and cold responses—genes which are unlikely to be required under heat stress—as well as photosynthesis genes and stress hormone signalling repressors, respectively. We also suggest a role for a poorly characterised sHSP hub gene (TraesCS4D02G212300), as an activator of the heat stress response, potentially inducing the expression of a vast suite of heat shock proteins and transcription factors known to play key roles in the heat stress response.DiscussionThe present work represents an exploratory examination of the heat-induced transcriptional change in wheat landrace seedlings and identifies several candidate hub genes which may act as regulators of this response and, thus, may be targets for breeders in the production of thermotolerant wheat varieties.

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) has a rich history of human use, and the therapeutic importance of compounds produced by this species is recognized by the medical community. The active constituents of cannabis, collectively called cannabinoids, encompass hundreds of distinct molecules, the most well-characterized of which are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which have been used for centuries as recreational drugs and medicinal agents. As a first step to establish a cannabis breeding program, we initiated this study to describe the HPLC-measured quantity of THC and CBD biochemistry profiles of 161 feral pistillate cannabis plants from 20 geographical regions of Iran. Our data showed that Iran can be considered a new region of high potential for distribution of cannabis landraces with diverse THC and CBD content, predominantly falling into three groups, as Type I = THC-predominant, Type II = approximately equal proportions of THC and CBD (both CBD and THC in a ratio close to the unity), and Type III = CBD-predominant. Correlation analysis among two target cannabinoids and environmental and geographical variables indicated that both THC and CBD contents were strongly influenced by several environmental-geographical factors, such that THC and CBD contents were positively correlated with mean, min and max annual temperature and negatively correlated with latitude, elevation, and humidity. Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between THC and CBD concentrations, suggesting that further studies to unravel these genotype × environment interactions (G × E interactions) are warranted. The results of this study provide important pre-breeding information on a collection of cannabis that will underpin future breeding programs.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the impact of pig breed on stress levels and meat quality in two commercial pig farms in the north-eastern part of Romania. One farm raised 52 Mangalita pure-bred pigs and the other 82 Duroc x Landrace crossbred pigs. Serum cortisol, a biomarker of stress, and serum glucose were measured before and after slaughtering, while meat pH was measured at 45 minutes and 24 hours post-mortem. Results showed that the Duroc x Landrace crossbred pigs had higher serum cortisol and glucose values before and after slaughtering compared to the Mangalita purebred pigs. The meat pH values of the two breeds were similar, with the pH45 and pH24 values being 6.67 and 5.48 for Duroc x Landrace crossbred and 6.53 and 5.52 for Mangalita purebred, respectively. These results suggest that pig breed can have an impact on stress levels and meat quality, with Duroc x Landrace crossbred pigs showing higher stress levels and meat quality being not affected by the breed of pig. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and to understand the underlying mechanisms.

Maize productivity in the central belt plays a significant role in the food security of China. With good adaptability and disease resistance, landrace germplasm is important for maize improvement. A total of 246 landrace accessions were collected from the maize belts in central China and genotyped with the SLAF-seq (Specific-Locus Amplified Fragment Sequencing) method, and 144,650 SNPs were obtained for each accession. The results showed that the landrace accessions could be divided into three major groups. In the cluster results, Group I included 64 accessions, which mainly belonged to the landrace of White horse teeth; Group II had 71 accessions, which mainly belonged to the lantern red landraces; the rest of the 116 accessions were clustered as Group III, including a variety of types landraces and seven indicator inbred lines. In the results of structure and multidimensional scaling, the accessions’ attribution differed with the clusters, the main reason for which is the attribution change in intermediate germplasms. Linkage disequilibrium decay distance was 0.98 kb, which was much lower than that of temperate and tropical maize inbred lines, indicated the much higher genetic diversity of landrace germplasms. The results can help us select suitable landrace germplasms and speed up the process of inbred line development and maize improvement.

A growing interest in the recovery and enhancement of crops, particularly local varieties such as ‘Caaveiro’ wheat, has been observed. This study aims to investigate the impact of cultivation systems (organic versus conventional) on the nutritional quality of ‘Caaveiro’ flour and breads protected by the PGI “Pan Galego,” employing two fermentation methods (sourdough versus sourdough and biological yeast). Organic flour exhibited significantly higher levels of moisture, fat, sucrose, phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), and copper (Cu) while also exhibiting a lower total starch and zinc (Zn) content. Organic bread, produced using both fermentation methods, demonstrated significantly higher protein, carbohydrate, total, resistant, and rapidly digestible starch, ash, Na, P, iron (Fe), and Cu content. Additionally, they contained less moisture compared to conventional bread. Despite variations in nutritional characteristics based on the cultivation system, the organic approach proved effective at producing high-quality products with a positive environmental impact, which is highly appreciated by consumers.

Environmental changes, including biodiversity loss, threaten agricultural production. The preservation and study of traditional germplasm collections is an essential element in the expansion of ecotypes. In recent years, eggplant has received a lot of interest as a functional food, falling among the top ten vegetables as a source of phenolic compounds that act as antioxidants. At the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, Sadovo, 22 local varieties of eggplant from four regions of Bulgaria were studied according to 17 quantitative and qualitative characteristics from the eggplant descriptor. Plant fruit weight recorded a highly positive significant correlation with width (r = 0.802**). Similarly, significant positive correlations were identified between days to flowering and fruit set (r = 0.867**) and between leaf length (r = 0.607**) and leaf width (r = 0.593**) and crude protein. The quality of the fruit is considered most important and therefore total sugar, crude protein and dry matter content are determined. Significant differences were observed, with A9E1156, B2E0302, and A8E0531 being high in protein, A8E0604, B6E0332, and A9E0537 having prominent sugars, while A7E0313, B4E0126, and A8E0586 were found to be high in dry matter. The results showed significant morphological and biochemical differences between the evaluated accession foundations for further breeding programs and a major source of agricultural biodiversity. SUMMARY: Triticum aestivum L. (bread wheat) is a crop relied upon by billions of people around the world, as a major source of both income and calories. Rising global temperatures, however, pose a genuine threat to the livelihood of these people, as wheat growth and yields are extremely vulnerable to damage by heat stress. Here we present the YoGI wheat landrace panel, comprising 342 accessions that show remarkable phenotypic and genetic diversity thanks to their adaptation to different climates. We quantified the abundance of 110 790 transcripts from the panel and used these data to conduct weighted co‐expression network analysis and to identify hub genes in modules associated with abiotic stress tolerance. We found that the expression of three hub genes, all heat‐shock proteins (HSPs), were significantly correlated with early thermotolerance in a validation panel of landraces. These hub genes belong to the same module, with one (TraesCS4D01G207500.1) being a candidate master‐regulator potentially controlling the expression of the other two hub genes, as well as a suite of other HSPs and heat‐stress transcription factors (HSFs). In this work, therefore, we identify three validated hub genes, the expression of which can serve as markers of thermotolerance during early development, and suggest that TraesCS4D01G207500.1 is a potential master regulator of HSP and HSF expression – presenting the YoGI landrace panel as an invaluable tool for breeders wishing to determine and introduce novel alleles into modern varieties, for the production of climate‐resilient crops. Significance Statement: Global wheat yields and crop growth are vulnerable to damage by heat stress, a threat that is likely to become more common globally in the coming years through climate change.
