Purpose: This paper presents two educational gamified virtual labs and investigates different methods of including gamified elements in virtual labs used for teaching. The purpose of this study is to investigate if immersive gamified virtual labs can be used as effective pedagogical tools by properly incorporating them into higher education curricula to assist low-risk active learning and student engagement. Design/methodology/approach: This research design comprises two gamified virtual labs including nine essential experiments of biology and chemistry integrated into the higher education curriculum of the Foundation of Science at an international University. Students filled in a survey after participating in the lab to shed light on appropriate ways of using gamification approaches in virtual labs. Findings: From the predominant findings of the study, gamified virtual labs increase student involvement thereby enhancing knowledge development with active learning and may be a potentially suitable pedagogical tool for low-risk interactive learning. Research limitations/implications: Limitations of the study include findings based on gamified virtual labs but not comparing the gamified virtual labs to simple virtual simulations to further investigate the pedagogical approach and understand the student perceptions in a simple virtual simulation and a gamified virtual lab. Practical implications: The findings of this study will provide evidence that gamified virtual labs integrated into higher education curricula as supplementary tools for laboratory experimentation improve the educational delivery process. Originality/value: This research highlights an appropriate way of integrating 3D virtual labs into practical curricula while discussing the benefits.

AbstractThis study reviews the literature to determine how cognitive factors affect consumers’ value perception and video streaming platform subscription intentions. This study analyses 20 Scopus and Web of Science peer-reviewed articles to examine the complex relationship between cognitive factors, perceived value and users’ decision-making. The cognitive factors perceived quality, content relevance, variety, enjoyment, cost-benefit ratio, and personalization help explain how users value video streaming platforms. Analyzing these factors can reveal the complex mechanisms that influence users’ platform subscriptions. This has practical implications for industry professionals. The research shows that technical dependability, tailored content suggestions, a variety of content, emotionally engaging content, clear benefit communication, and adaptable experiences shape users’ value perceptions. The above implications are especially relevant in dynamic digital environments influenced by the global pandemic and technological advances. This study also advances consumer behavior theory. This study applies existing models and frameworks to video streaming platforms, adding to the literature. The findings of this study enhance perceived value theory, technology adoption models, personalization theories, and engagement frameworks. These findings improve our understanding of digital user behavior. The study’s narrow focus on cognitive factors and self-reported data are limitations, but it provides valuable insights. These limitations allow future research to explore unexplored areas and use new methods.

Introduction Smoking among medical, dental, and pharmacy students is an issue in every university worldwide, which will impact future smoking cessation services as they are future healthcare providers. This study investigates the smoking prevalence, exposure to secondhand smoke, and factors associated with smoking among medical, dental, and pharmacy students at a public university in Malaysia. Methods The self-administered online survey utilized in this cross-sectional study was derived from the Global Health Professions Students Survey (GHPSS), which involved medical, dental, and pharmacy students. A total of 328 participants completed a questionnaire from June to August 2022, with a response rate of 91.1%. Results The overall smoking prevalence was 4.6% among the medical, dental, and pharmacy students who participated in this study; 46.7% of current smokers were exposed to secondhand smoke at home compared to 17.6% of non-smokers (p=0.011); and 66.7% of smokers were exposed to secondhand smoke in public compared to 40.3% of non-smokers (p=0.043). In all, 99.1% of respondents supported the smoking ban and 46.7% of current smokers supported the smoking ban in discos/bars/pubs, compared to 82.0% of non-smokers (p=0.002). Of the participants, 96.6% received lessons on the danger of tobacco, and 65.5% received smoking cessation training. IntroductionAdult zebrafish are increasingly used in Parkinson’s disease (PD) research due to their well-characterized dopaminergic system. Among the toxin-based models, the neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is widely utilized to induce parkinsonism in adult zebrafish. Therefore, this review presents an overview of the procedures and the dynamic changes in behavior and physiology observed in the adult zebrafish PD model following a single intraperitoneal injection of MPTP.MethodsA systematic literature search in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases was conducted to identify relevant articles. Of the 165 articles identified, 9 were included in this review. These chosen articles are original works published before March 2024, all of which utilized adult zebrafish induced with MPTP as the model for PD. Other articles were excluded based on factors such as limited relevance, utilization of zebrafish embryos or larvae instead of adults, and variations in MPTP deliveries.ResultsStudies indicated that the ideal model entails the utilization of mixed gender zebrafish aged between 4 and 6 months from the wild-type strain. The acceptable MPTP doses ranges between 20 μg/g (lowest) and 225 μg/g (highest) and doses above 292 μg/g are lethal. Furthermore, noticeable parkinsonian symptoms appear 1 day after administration and persist for more than 1 week.DiscussionMitochondrial dysfunction precedes dopaminergic neurodegeneration within this experimental regime. A single administration of MPTP effectively induces PD in adult zebrafish. This study aids in crafting the adult zebrafish PD model, outlining the progressive behavioral and physiological changes ensuing from MPTP administration.

Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the current and future trends in poverty alleviation strategies for sustainable development, show the gaps and propose the way forward for future research. Methods: This research covers four decades from 1981 to 2023. We identified a corpus of 5,982 articles from the Scopus database using the bibliometric and scientometric methods. We excluded 653 to remain, with 5,329 fulfilling the conditions of non-duplicates, suitable authorship, and conform content. These documents include articles, reviews, journals, books and other publications in our study field. With the help of VOS viewer and R-Studio software, we have performed two significant tests: performance analysis and science mapping. Results: Despite the poverty alleviation strategies for sustainable development that emerged in 1981, it has experienced steady growth from 2000 onwards and has reached the pick in 2022 with 316 publications. The most prolific countries are China, the USA and the UK. At the same time, the most contributing authors are Liu Y, Wang Y, and Lily, both from China and Ravaillion, M from Australia. They have discussed more about poverty alleviation and poverty reduction. Furthermore, we realize that the household, remittance and land use have no connection with any item besides the government and IMF. Conclusion: We have underlined the countries and authors that contributed the most and revealed the challenges in poverty alleviation via thematic mapping. Therefore, we recommend that future researchers, while keeping an eye on Africa, livelihoods, gender inequality, and India, focus more on poverty alleviation, China, and sustainable development. Special attention also must focus on the household, remittance, land use, government, and IMF and find ways to improve their role in poverty alleviation strategies for sustainable development.

Despite extensive preclinical research over the years, a significant gap remains in our understanding of the specific effects of methamphetamine (METH) and amphetamine (AMPH) withdrawal. Understanding these differences could be pivotal to unveiling the unique pathophysiology underlying each stimulant. This may facilitate the development of targeted and effective treatment strategies tailored to the specific characteristics of each substance. Following PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review was conducted to examine alterations in spontaneous locomotor activity, specifically horizontal activity, in animals experiencing withdrawal from extended and repeated administration of AMPH or METH. Original articles were retrieved from four electronic databases, supplemented by a review of the references cited in the published papers. A total of thirty-one full-length articles (n = 31) were incorporated in the analysis. The results indicated that six studies documented a significant increase in horizontal activity among animals, seven studies reported decreased locomotion, and eighteen studies (8 AMPH; 10 METH) reported no significant alterations in the animals’ locomotor activity. Studies reporting heightened locomotion mainly employed mice undergoing withdrawal from METH, studies reporting diminished locomotion predominantly involved rats undergoing withdrawal from AMPH, and studies reporting no significant changes in horizontal activity employed both rats and mice (12 rats; 6 mice). Drug characteristics, routes of administration, animal models, dosage regimens, duration, and assessment timing seem to influence the observed outcomes. Despite more than 50% of papers enlisted in this review indicate no significant changes in the locomotion during the stimulant withdrawal, the unique reactions of animals to withdrawal from METH and AMPH reported by some underscore the need for a more nuanced understanding of stimulant withdrawal.

The risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) escalates in women during menopause, which is associated with increased vascular endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, and vascular remodeling. Meanwhile, curcumin has been demonstrated to enhance vascular function and structure in various studies. Therefore, this study systematically reviewed the recent literature regarding the potential role of curcumin in modulating vascular function and structure during menopause. The Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases were searched to identify relevant articles. Clinical and preclinical studies involving menopausal women and postmenopausal animal models with outcomes related to vascular function or structure were included. After thorough screening, seven articles were selected for data extraction, comprising three animal studies and four clinical trials. The findings from this review suggested that curcumin has beneficial effects on vascular function and structure during menopause by addressing endothelial function, arterial compliance, hemodynamic parameters, and the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Therefore, curcumin has the potential to be utilized as a supplement to enhance vascular health in menopausal women. However, larger-scale clinical trials employing gold-standard techniques to evaluate vascular health in menopausal women are necessary to validate the preliminary results obtained from small-scale randomized clinical trials involving curcumin supplementation (INPLASY, INPLASY202430043).
