Environmental noise is one of the primary important factors that negatively affect human health and quality of life. The canyon effect occurs in the regions between the long structure groups. Canyon effect can cause different conditions in terms of noise, heat, lighting or ventilation. This difference: It depends on the building-road relationship, traffic density, climatic conditions, building dimensions and geometry. Within the scope of this study: The road-structure height relationship of environmental noise specific to street canyons and the trade-housing relationship within the building were examined. Highway was preferred as the sound source. 12 separate operational models were created, and a total of 168 measurement results were obtained from 4 indoor and 10 outdoor measurement points in each model. The results showed the level of the canyon effect specific to different variables.

Today, high-density urban areas have emerged as a result of an economic approach to accommodate more people. The concept of density as a quantitative measure indicating the density of settlements and the population living in them has profound implications for social living conditions, safety in communal spaces, and perceptions of the environment. In such cases, residents evaluate environmental density based on their own impressions. This mental process of perception and assessment is based on physical features. Therefore, to address this issue thoroughly, the present study aims to consider the psychological effects and other dimensions of density. By identifying these factors, the study tries to propose any potential soluations for lessening the detrimental impacts of high residential density. To this end, it examines the effects of housing density on residents’ mental judgements in the city of Karaj, Iran, and focuses on the socio-economic structures of residents in order to improve understanding of housing units arrangement. In this context, literature review was conducted to investigate the notion of housing density, and the factors influencing mental judgments were extracted and given in the form of a conceptual model of study. Then, to test the relevant model, a survey and field studies were used. Findings showed that the location, the height, and the interior design of the residential units influence the users’ mental judgements. Furthermore, the findings indicated that the perception of density in residential environments is affected by structural features, preferences for housing type, and the presence of common open spaces in complexes.

HOUSING , *HOUSING policy , *MODERN architecture , *MODERNIZATION (Social science) , *CONTENT analysis - Abstract
In the Early Republican Period, housing competitions played an important role in paving the way for creative ideas in architecture and contributing to the modern housing paradigm of the period. Additionally, using competition as a method to solve the housing problem and the structuring of competitions through modern and affordable housing projects was a remarkable attitude in terms of periodic dynamics. In this context, this study aims to analyze the housing competitions published in Mimar/Arkitekt and Mimarlık magazines between 1930-1950 and to identify the evaluation criteria and period-specific housing approaches through content analysis. The study focuses on three competition categories: apartments, worker-civil servant-migrant houses, and houses-cheap houses. The texts of the competitions in these categories were analyzed according to the determined discourse groups and interpreted within the framework of the conditions of the period. The study has revealed significant findings in order to read the housing understanding of the Early Republican Period, changes in design criteria and housing policies shaped in line with modernization goals. In this context, it is thought that the study will contribute to the literature to understand the architectural practices of the Early Republican Period and the changing housing culture with the Republic. HOUSING , *HOUSING developers , *HOUSING market , *SECONDARY analysis , *CONSTRUCTION costs - Abstract
In many countries of the world, the problems related to housing, which is one of the basic needs of people, have not been fully solved. In Turkey, different problems arise in the housing production and marketing process. The aim of this study is to categorize and discuss the types of problems encountered in the housing production and marketing process in Turkey within the framework of the relevant literature. Within this framework, secondary data were analyzed and concepts and terms related to these problems were explained. In this way, the research has an exploratory characteristic. As a result of the secondary data analysis of the research, it is understood that housing production is faced with problems arising from land supply, increases in construction material costs and local governments as well as financial problems. Another important finding emerging from the data analysis is that housing developers are inadequate in using marketing automation and digital techniques in their advertising efforts. It is evaluated that the results will be useful in the correct decision-making processes of those who supply and demand housing, give readers the opportunity to reason, help them to satisfy and motivate them, and guide future studies. COVID-19 pandemic , *ORNAMENTAL plants , *EPIDEMICS , *PANDEMICS , *QUARANTINE - Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic emerged in Wuhan, China, towards the end of 2019 and affected the whole world. People who were confined to their homes for a long time due to the global pandemic, which caused many deaths in the world, connected with the outside world through their balconies. The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' habits of using balconies at their homes. The survey prepared to determine the change in the balcony usage habits of people experiencing the pandemic period in Turkey in 2020-2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic was intense, was applied to 462 people and statistical analyzes were employed. According to the finding; approximately 81% of the participants stated that they spent time on the balcony during the pandemic period, 68% stated that the time spent on the balcony increased, 53% stated that they made changes to their balconies, and 54% stated that spending time on the balcony had a positive effect on the treatment process. 24% of the participants stated that the balconies of their residences were not large enough and comfortable and that they wanted to move to another residence with a balcony of sufficient size and comfort. In this study shows that having balconies of sufficient size and comfort in newly planned residences, the use of furniture on the balcony, and the production of ornamental plants will provide a great advantage in psychologically recovering from future epidemics and in establishing connections with the outdoors for people who have to stay in quarantine. One of the effective factors in enabling individuals to age in place and to spend their old age periods more actively and with better quality is the physical environmental characteristics of the dwelling and its immediate surroundings. In this study, which is based on the assertion that individuals prefer to live in their own homes in old age, it is aimed to determine the features that should be carried by the houses that will support the aging in place of elderly individuals and to reveal the design principles. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 70 elderly users aged 65 and over in their residences. General frequency distributions and chi-square test analyses of the obtained data were performed in SPSS statistical program and descriptive content analysis was performed on open-ended questions and the data were examined with the comparison tables created. Then, all the data obtained from the field study are evaluated together with the literature information and the principles that should be considered in the renovation of the houses for the use of elderly users in line with the new needs are presented. With the design principles presented, it is envisaged that elderly users will continue their lives in a better quality and active way in their residences by extending the time they can be self-sufficient.

- Abstract
The demand for the first and second-hand housing in Türkiye's 26 sub-regions was examined with the convergence hypothesis. In the study, monthly time series for the period between January 2013 and March 2023 were used. The first and secondhand housing demand was estimated with the conditional and unconditional convergence hypothesis. Dynamic panel system GMM approach was used in the analyses. As a result of the unconditional convergence model analysis of the first-hand housing demand; It has been determined that delayed values of the first-hand home sales positively affect housing demand. In the unconditional convergence model, the house price and household income variables positively affect the first-hand house demand, while the amount of second-hand house sales negatively affects the first-hand house demand. According to the convergence hypothesis findings regarding second-hand house sales, the lagged value of the second-hand house sales in the unconditional model positively affects the second-hand house demand. The household income variable in the conditional models has a positive effect on the second-hand house demand, and the first-hand house sales variable has a negative effect. The house price variable in the second-hand house sales convergence model is statistically insignificant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Late Antiquity, aristocrats and city administrators continued the tradition of using impressive architectural and decorative elements in their urban residences, reminiscent of the practices in the Roman Empire. During this period, especially the most accessible and visible parts of houses were adorned in a remarkable manner to showcase the sophisticated tastes, social status, and wealth of the homeowners to their visitors. For this purpose, a particular architectural design and ornamentation was preferred because this urban elite group, in addition to hosting people under their patronage in extravagant residences, also took advantage of the domestic environment to strengthen relationships with peers of similar status. The courtyard, an indispensable feature of these residences, served particularly as one of the primary areas for welcoming visitors, thus leading to its meticulous design. This space, which was vital for shaping the initial impression of both the house and its owner, could feature fountains with decorative elements in its most visible area. Similar to the bathrooms and toilets within the house, these fountains were elements that elevated the overall standard of residences. Closely connected to channels and clean waterways, these fountains not only served practical functions but were also used to display the homeowner's high status by enhancing the quality and value of the houses. This article primarily focuses on examining the reflections of social changes in residential structures, especially residential fountains, due to the evolving structure of Late Antiquity. It discusses the fundamental characteristics of "fountains positioned in courtyards" as a type of fountain through a group of luxury residences from Late Antiquity in the regions of Asia Minor and the Mediterranean. Examining a sample of urban houses from Sardis, Aphrodisias, Xanthus, Arycanda, Side, Perge, Sagalassos, and Laodicea, and cities outside Asia Minor, this article emphasises the architectural features, functions, and significance for homeowners of the fountains dating from the 4th to 6th centuries AD located in the peristyles and open courtyards of these houses. The brief descriptions provided in the relevant section about the sampled fountains offer a contextual and spatial understanding of the fountains under consideration. Additionally, the objective is to elucidate how these fountains turned into an essential element of the luxurious homes of the elite through their architectural styles and decorative designs, and how homeowners used these fountains as instruments to display their social statuses. “Architecture” is one of the tools that define sustainable cultural tourism. The sustainability of architecture which is an important source of culture is possible by conversation and restoration studies. It is observed that the most worn-out building group is residential buildings due to the lack of strict rules for historical settlements with this potential. A process based on the existence of traditional houses in historical settlements with their current function has been defined to be a tool, not a goal; particularly in cases where this becomes difficult. The Sille quarter which contains various cultural richness of Turkey and provides an adequate touristic axis for the province of Konya has been discussed. Fundamental decisions have been made to determine new functions that will define the model where functions other than residences will not cause transport capacity problems, social and cultural pressures; and prevent protected areas to become the decor of commercial activities.

In this study, the contribution of fuels (coal + natural gas) used for residential heating in Kayseri city center to air pollution was investigated. For this reason, the amount of emissions released to the atmosphere was calculated by using the natural gas and coal data used in the residences in the 5 (five) year period between 2015-2019 in the province of Kayseri. In addition, the percentage contribution of both residential heating and industrial point sources to air pollution in terms of emissions was compared. The relationship between annual average emission amounts and National Air Quality Monitoring Network data was also revealed. During the 5 years period, the total amount of emissions originating from the fuels used in residences and industries were 6171 tons for PM, 9049 tons for SO2, and 14179 tons for NOx. It has been evaluated that the decrease in PM10 concentrations and the increase in NOX concentrations from 2015 to 2019 may be related to the increase in natural gas use in the city. When evaluated in terms of emission amounts; it has been revealed that PM and SO2 are mostly released from domestic sources, while NOXs are from industrial sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RATINGS of cities & towns , *STREET addresses , *BARS (Drinking establishments) , *PUBLIC spaces , *NUMBER theory , *HOUSING , *LANDSCAPE assessment , *CHILDREN'S drawings - Abstract
With a consideration of the key concepts of housing, landscape, and roads, this study discusses a number of housing areas in Ankara that are planned, designed, and add value to the city. The intention of the study is to better understand integrated design decisions on housing, landscape and roads, by examining the original drawings and conceptual proposals of selected project designers. The research takes an analytical reading of a period starting from the Early Republican area, when the road was conceptualized as the public space of the house, to the current state where the interface between the housing area and the road is mostly obstructed. Providing a consideration of three historical periods, the article mainly focuses on Demirtaş Kamçıl and Rahmi Bediz's Israel houses, Fatin Uran's İlbank blocks, and Altuğ-Behruz Çinici's Sincan Elvanköy mass housing complex projects. It intends to deduce the common ground of these projects with different contexts, scales, and spatial organizations in order to lay the necessary knowledge ground for alternative design and planning approaches in the constitution of the housing-landscape-road relationship, which appear to be widely lost today. Housing production has increased rapidly, with the rapid increase of the world population and industrialization. Designing houses, which are produced in large numbers and intensively, by ignoring the characteristics of the climatic region is effective in the increase of energy and environmental problems. The climatic design, which is made by considering the climatic characteristics of the inhabited region, aims to design the buildings climate responsive and energy efficient. The parameters that are effective in climatic design are mainly; climatic conditions related to the external environment and parameters related to the built environment such as location, orientation, building form, space organization, building envelope (facade), natural ventilation, natural lighting, solar control. Considering that design parameters related to the built environment may have limiting effects on climatic design, the design process becomes an iterative process in which many criteria are observed. In order to choose between these criteria, support systems are needed to identify alternatives and analyze them simultaneously. Most of the energy consumed in houses is through the façades, which is an important design parameter as it separates the interior and exterior environment from each other. In this study, it is aimed to carry out the sensitivity analysis stage in order to create a decision support system model that can produce optimum facade design solutions in order to reduce energy consumption. CITIES & towns , *ANCIENT architecture , *URBAN planning , *RESIDENTIAL areas , *CONSTRUCTION planning , *URBANIZATION - Abstract
The parcel excavations carried out in Side since 2014 have yielded very important data on the city plan, urbanisation process and development activities of Side. These data show that a residential area was created south of the theatre in the city. In this context, 3 separate buildings separated from each other by 2 alleys were unearthed in parcels 785-19 and 785-18. The plans of these buildings, which we named as Building A, B and C, could not be determined exactly within the parcel. Only the function and the central plan of Building B can be clearly inferred. The subject of this study is the plan of the house with a peristyle courtyard, which we call Building B, the plan type revealed by this plan, and the comparative evaluation of the building with other examples in terms of architectural tradition. In this way, a new example of the ancient residential architecture of Anatolia will be added from Side, one of the most important cities of the Pamphylia Region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tapureli is an ancient settlement in Rough Cilicia connected to the Kızılgeçit Valley being located 32 km north of Erdemli in the province of Mersin. It attracts attention with its layout and size, continuity of settlement, well-preserved houses and churches. In this study, two decorated houses that we identified among the houses during our surveys in Tapureli are evaluated. There are architectural decorations in Ionic and Corinthian order at the entrances of the houses belonging to the Roman Imperial Period which are also used in the Late Antiquity. These are rare examples in Cilicia and in other regions. In this study, the architectural ornaments and layouts in these two houses are examined in detail. In this context, reconstruction suggestions are undertaken with the data obtained from the entrances of both houses and a dating proposal has been made based on architectural ornaments. The appearance of architectural ornament forms in Tapureli, indicates that architectural elements in cities were also in demand at the countryside. For this reason, the relationship of these houses with local ornament workshops and local craftsmen is discussed. In addition, the reasons for the presence and use of these decorations in the houses located in the countryside of Rough Cilicia are emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
