Denizlerin sürdürülebilirliği, iklim değişikliği, kirlilik ve aşırı avlanma gibi nedenlerle ciddi tehdit altındadır. Bu durum balık popülasyonlarının hızla tükenerek ekosistemin tahribatına neden olmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, deniz ekosistemini olumsuz etkileyen avcılık yöntemlerini ve yetiştiricilik faaliyetlerini ortaya koyarak sürdürülebilirliğe olan etkilerini tespit etmektir. Çalışma sonucunda balıkçılık sektörünün doğaya birçok zararı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bunların başlıcaları açık sularda avcılığın neden olduğu aşırı avlanma ve denizlerde meydana gelen kirlenmedir. İç sularda ve kıyılarda yapılan yetiştiricilikten kaynaklı sorunların başlıcaları girdi artıklarından kaynaklı kirlilik, dip kısımlarda oksijen tüketiminin neden olduğu tahribat, ölü balık artıkları ve görsel kirliliktir. Günümüzde insan faktörünün yer aldığı faaliyetlerde, özellikle ticari kaygının ön planda olduğu yapılanmalar, doğayı ve ekosistemi tahribatta cömert olabilmektedir. Dolayısıyla politika yapıcıların, tüm dünya insanlarının ortak mirası olan denizlerin korunmasında sert ve ciddi önlemler almasında yarar görülmektedir.

The purpose of this study is to determine non-point pollution sources in the Kesikköprü Reservoir basin as well as to estimate the amount of pollution carried into the reservoir by surface flows from non-point sources. Water quality at the Kesikköprü reservoir has been negatively affected by nutrients from non-point pollution sources in the surrounding basin. These sources are identified as actions caused by land use practices (agricultural areas, urban zones, meadows, pastures, and natural vegetation areas), fertilizer use for agricultural activities, livestock activities, leaks from individual septic tanks, and atmospheric deposition in the basin. To estimate the pollution from non-point sources, sub-basin boundaries were established by using digital elevation maps within the existing basin boundaries of Kesikköprü Reservoir. The pollution loads namely, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) from non-point sources in sub-basins are calculated for the year of 2022. The areal distributions of the obtained results are presented as digital maps generated by using ArcGIS 10.8, a Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Non-point pollution loads have been found to occur to a greater extent in the KAH-10 and KAH-2 subbasins, which have the largest areas among the sub-basins and have a high intensity of anthropogenic activities, in comparison to other sub-basins. Environmental pollutants cause health problems as well as affect living or non-living things in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Many harmful substances, the use of which is increasing today, directly or indirectly cause deterioration in the quality of life of living things. Pollutions originating from water-primarily affect fish health. Negative effects are observed on the physiological, biochemical, and anatomical structures of fish feeding, migrating, and breeding in the aquatic environment due to pollutants. Zebrafish is an important model organism thanks to its development and easy reproduction. Many potential pollutants in the aquatic environment degrade the quality of water. Natural, industrial, domestic, etc. To the aquatic environment. Pollutants of organic or inorganic origin emitted from sources can cause toxic effects on fish. Pesticides, which are considered as one of these pollutants, are used to destroy the effects of harmful pests while causing death in living things, their negative effects on the reproductive system like many systems have been revealed. Heavy metals negatively affect the biological systems of fish by causing bioaccumulation by ingestion of fish mostly through respiration. Although endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EBC) affect different tissues and organs for generations, their effects on the reproductive system increase by affecting the hormonal system. Nanoparticles affect different biological systems as well as the reproductive system. In this article, the histological effects of environmental pollutants on zebrafish ( Danio reiro) reproductive organs and the reasons for choosing zebrafish as a model organism re-evaluated.

Some trace elements in various lichens as biomonitors of pollution were investigated. Also, the pollution status was assessed by enrichment factor, contamination factor, and pollution load index. Investigated elements were Ta, Bi, Hf, Nb, Ga, Sc, Li, Y, Ce, and Sr. The lichen species were Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca, Umbilicaria vellea, Aspicilia calcarea, Pseudevernia furfuracea, and Cetraria islandica. According to the results, lichen species accumulate Sr element well. The highest trace element accumulated by Pseudevernia furfuracea (21.7±1.0 mg/kg; 75%), Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca (31.9±1.6 mg/kg; 61%), Umbilicaria vellea (16.3±0.8 mg/kg; 59%), Aspicilia calcarea (77.9±3.8 mg/kg; 88%), and Cetraria islandica (22.7±1.1 mg/kg; 75%) was determined as Sr. The highest CFs in lichens investigated were calculated for Sr, Ta, and Li. PLI values for Cetraria islandica, Aspicilia calcarea, and Umbilicaria vellea were greater than 1. Although land-based pollution is expressed as the most important pollution factor in the pollution of the seas (80%), the rate of pollution originating from ships (approximately 20%) is not to be underestimated. The fact that marine pollution is caused almost exclusively by ships requires investigation of the measures to be taken against marine pollution from ships and their applicability. As a matter of fact, the most important cause of pollution caused by ships is ballast water, and it has been determined that over 7,000 marine organisms are transported between ports with ballast waters on a global scale every day. Ballast water is used to maintain the balance of the ship on the water when the ships are not loaded. Considering that 90% of international trade is still provided by ships and 3-5 billion tons of ballast water is transported by approximately 85,000 ships every year with world maritime trade, the importance of pollution caused by ballast water becomes apparent. While ballast water is one of the elements that cause the transport of exotic marine and freshwater organisms between all seas of the world and cause pollution, the pollution in question is very effective especially in the aquaculture sector. Therefore, in this article, the connection of ballast water with fisheries management has been examined and solutions have been sought for the problems.

In this study, to determine the trophic level of Küçükçekmece Lagoon Lake, water and sediment samplings were performed at five selected stations seasonally during a year between 2014-2015. The water samples were analyzed to determine some environmental variables (water temperature, pH, conductivity, DO (dissolved oxygen), TDS (total dissolved solids), and salinity. NO3-N, NO2-N, SO4-2, PO4-3, SiO2, chlorophyll-a, TP (total phosphorus), and Secchi disc light permeability) and benthic macroinvertebrates were examined to determine indicator organisms in the sampled sediment material. Bray-Curtis Similarity Index was used to the observed environmental results to determine the similarities of the sampling stations. According to this, station 1 (St. 1) located in the center of the lake, and St. 5 located near the sea were found to be different from other sampling stations while the stations located near the creeks were found to have much more similar to each other. In addition, to determine the trophy level of the lake, Carlson Trophic State Index (CTSI) was used to the obtained some physicochemical results (Secchi disc permeability, total phosphorus, chlorophyll-a) and it was found that the lake showed a eutrophic character during all seasons. According to the result of sediment sampling, an average of 350 individuals per m2 (44.3 % belonging Polychaeta group; 29.5 % belonging Chironomidae group; 19.7 % belonging Oligochaeta group; 6.5 % belonging Bivalvia group) in a total of 6 benthic macroinvertebrate taxa (Bivalvia, Polychaeta, Tubificoides benedii (Oligochaeta), Tubificoides sp. (immature Oligochaeta), Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Oligochaeta), and Chironomus salinarius (Chironomidae) were determined. Thus, it is observed that the presence of some indicator species supported eutrophic conditions qualitatively. In this study, the distribution of dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPHs) in coastal water and sediments from the western coastline of Antalya Gulf (Mediterranean Sea, Türkiye) in December 2018 and in May 2019 was investigated by the UVfluorescence spectroscopy method. The hydrocarbon concentrations ranged from 4.6 to 9.1µg/L (Thetis-Oil equivalents) for coastal waters and from 6.5 to 11.2 µg/g, dry weight (Thetis-Oil equivalents) for sediments, respectively. No significant correlations were observed between petroleum hydrocarbons and physico-chemical parameters measured in seawater (except pH; r = -0.62, p < 0.05). When compared with various environmental hydrocarbon pollution criteria, the levels found in this study indicated that the coastal waters and sediments were considerably polluted. Intensive maritime activities, ship and boat traffic increased tourist influx, oil spills from ships, illegal discharge of oily wastewater, increase in population density, runoff, and atmospheric fallout during rainy periods were considered the main causes of local hydrocarbon pollution in the region. The findings suggest that regional monitoring programs need to be continued in all sensitive coastal areas to describe concentrations and distributions of hydrocarbons at the sea surface, in sediments, and in biota. The results of this study can contribute to the baseline data which can be used for future monitoring programs and regulatory actions to improve the environmental quality of the Mediterranean coastal zone of Türkiye. 66 insect samples from three localities where vicinity of the Murgul copper mine were collected between June to September 2020 to investigate water beetle (Coleoptera) entomofauna of Murgul (Artvin). Totally twelve species, all of which belong to Dytiscidae and Hydrophilidae determined and reported here. Nine of them as Hydrophilidae (6 Laccobius, 1 Enochrus, 1 Hydrobius, 1 Coelostoma), and of which three as Dytiscidae (1 Agabus, 1 Deronectes, 1 Hydroglyphus) were determined. In addition, Hydroglyphus pusillus, Laccobius (Dimorpholaccobius) sculptus and Laccobius (Dimorpholaccobius) sulcatulus were recorded from Artvin for the first time. Laccobius, with six species, identified in the study area, is conspicuous compared to the other two genera. The study highlights that the mine affected habitats should be evaluated and monitored in terms of heavy metal concentration of biotic and abiotic environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Floating macro litter (>2.5cm; FML) has serious ecological and socio-economic impacts and needs to be quantified in order to inform on the environmental status and to better understand the sources and trends of litter in the marine environment. In this study, FML pollution was assessed in the Finike (Anaximander) Seamounts region, a marine protected area in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Density and composition of FML were determined from a total of 27 visual surveys, covering a total length of 970.4km, during two research cruises in May and September 2021. Relative FML densities were highly variable between surveys, ranging from 0 to 145 items.km-2 and 0 to 82 items.km-2 in May and September, respectively. Overall, the average density of FML was 22.79 items.km-2. Plastics constituted 98.8% of the total FML observed. The most common items were plastic bags, food packaging and plastic and polystyrene fragments. Predominance of plastic FML in the Finike Seamounts region indicates a high potential for plastics to interact with marine biota, including endangered species, in this protected area. Results highlight the need to better understand the effects of plastics in this special ecosystem and the urgency to implement measures at national and international levels to address the problem of plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea. Micro-(< 5mm) and mesoplastic (5-25mm) pollution is reported for the surface waters of the Finike (Anaximander) Seamounts, which is a high sea marine protected area in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Samples were collected from surface waters with plankton nets during two research cruises in May and September 2021. Plastics were physically and chemically characterized using optical microscopy and FT-IR. Microplastics were the most common size range, comprising 79% and 68% of the total plastic particles collected in May and September, respectively. Microplastic concentrations varied from 0.78x104 to 73.9x104 par.km-2 (mean 19.2x104 ± 26.7x104 par.km-2) and 0.13x104 to 60.9x104 par.km-2 (mean 13.0x104 ± 26.7x104 par.km-2) in May and September, respectively. In both cruises, microplastics were mostly fragments in shape, transparent in colour and 2-5mm in size. Regarding mesoplastics, their concentrations ranged from 0.13x104 to 16.7x104 par.km-2 (mean 5.19x104 ± 6.38x104 par.km-2) and 0.13x104 to 28.7x104 par.km-2 (mean 6.09x104 ± 12.6x104 par.km-2) in May and September, respectively. Mesoplastics were mainly films in shape and transparent in colour. FT-IR analysis revealed that the most abundant polymers were low-density polymers polyethylene (69%), followed by polypropylene (18%). Results show that plastics are ubiquitous in the Finike Seamounts area. This is a cause for concern regarding the health of the ecosystem in this marine protected area and highlights the urgent need to develop solutions for the problem of plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea. Data provided by the present study serve as a baseline for future environmental assessments in the region and supports the implementation of directives and strategies for long-term conservation and reduction of plastic pollution in the marine environment. Synthetic dyes produced by chemical synthesis are used in textile, food, cosmetic, plastic, and pharmaceutical industries. Of these dyes, azo dyes are a major group of dyes widely used by these industries despite their harm to the environment. A limited number of studies have focused on the impact of dyes on the environment; thus eco-toxicological studies are imperative. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic effect of Everzol Red LFB (ERL) and Everzol Yellow CGL (EYC) on zebrafish embryos. Embryos were exposed to 23-600 mg L-1 ERL and EYC for 96 hours and the survival rates, heart rate, hatching rates, and body malformation of these individuals were determined. According to the results of this study, the 96 h LC50 values of the ERL and EYC were determined to be 292 (232-391) and 127 (107-152) mg L-1, respectively. The teratogenic index (TI) values of the ERL and EYC were calculated as 1.37 and 1.49, respectively. ERL and EYC are teratogenic for zebrafish embryos based on the calculated TI value. Both dyes caused significant inhibition of embryonic growth and heart rate in Danio rerio embryos. ERL and EYC caused pericardial edema, yolk sac edema, tail malformation, and spinal curvature in embryos. According to the determined parameters, the negative effect of EYC on zebrafish larvae is greater than of the ERL. These results indicate that both dyes have adverse effects on zebrafish development and may adversely affect the aquatic ecosystem if they enter the aquatic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atatürk Dam Lake, which was established on the Euphrates River for agricultural irrigation and electricity production, is the largest dam lake in Turkey. Many fish species, which are the primary food source for humans, live in the dam lake. Therefore, possible pollution in this dam will adversely affect not only fish but also human health. For this purpose, in this study, lead, cadmium, chromium, iron, zinc, and copper levels were measured in the liver, gill, and muscle tissues of Cyprinus carpio, which was the food source of the local people, caught from two different regions (Sitilce and Samsat) of the dam lake in August and September in 2021. In our study, lead was not detected in any of the tissues and cadmium was not detected in gill and muscle tissues in fish from both regions. It was found that the levels of all metals found in the fish of the Sitilce region were not statistically different from the fish of the Samsat region (except the liver iron level). Our research results showed that the heavy metal levels in the muscle tissue of C. carpio were below the legally permissible limits in terms of nutritional safety and human consumption. In addition, when compared with previous studies, it was determined that there was a decrease in heavy metal levels in the tissues of fish after the wastewater treatment plants were established. Poor environmental conditions and pollution are known to contribute significantly to child deaths, diseases, and disability, particularly in the developing world. Environmental risks have major effects on child health and development from pre-conception to childhood and adolescence, sometimes persisting into adulthood. In the last 50 years, we have witnessed the spread of tens of thousands of newly discovered chemicals into the environment, leading to the detection of residual human-made chemicals in all animal and human tissues tested. Among these, the most common ones include phthalates, plastic products such as bisphenol A (BPA), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead, cadmium, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), solvents, pesticides, toxic substances in inhaled air (tobacco smoke, ozone, particulate matter), and chlorinated disinfection byproducts. Chronic exposure to low doses of these endocrine disrupting chemicals during sensitive periods may lead to developmental functional disorders that may not be observed with higher doses. In order to investigate the heavy metal accumulation and its spatial distribution, the extent of the pollution and possible sources, gravity cores and surface sediments were collected from the Kocasu Delta located at the south of the Sea of Marmara. Grain size, organic carbon, total carbonate analyses, geochemical analyses carried out on the samples. The relationships between elements and other variables have been examined and possible metal contamination in the samples have been determined. Accordingly, the results of the mean enrichment factor (EF) and the pollution factor (Cf), especially the Cr, Ni and Pb metals, indicated that the enrichment/contamination was "low and/or moderate", the results of the average geo-accumulation index (Igeo) showed that core and surface sediments were of "low contamination" levels for Cr, Ni and Pb metals. No contamination was found by the other metals and it has been determined that the work area in general is not polluted. The influence of the presence of various metal ores and magmatic rocks with high baseline (background) values in the southern drainage basin of the Marmara Sea, many industrial untreated wastewater discharges, domestic wastewater, solid waste and livestock manure storage areas, fertilizers and pesticides used in agricultural activities, and mining activities are the main source of point pollution in the study area and these are the possible sources of Cr, Ni and Pb elements that provide "low to moderate" enrichment/contamination in this study area. Bu çalışma Gökçeada çevresindeki anyonik deterjan ve fosfat kirliliğini belirlemek amacıyla Aralık 2016-Kasım 2017 tarihleri arasında yapılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre çalışma dönemi boyunca Gökçeada çevresinde deterjan konsantrasyonları 0.020-0.051 mg/L arasında, fosfat konsantrasyonları ise 0.008-0.451 mg/L değerleri arasında bulunmuştur. Ada etrafından alınan su örneklerindeki ortalama anyonik deterjan ve fosfat konsantrasyonları ‘Su Kirliliği Kontrolü Yönetmeliği’ ne göre değerlendirilmiştir. Buna göre Gökçeada yüzey aktif madde açısından I. Sınıf (kirlenmemiş su), fosfat parametresi açısından ise II. Sınıf (az kirlenmiş su) olarak belirlenmiştir.

Quantities of pouches filled with marine debris and packaging (kg) collected during coast and beach cleaning, the amount of waste (m3) collected during sea surface cleaning and moss work (kg), and the amount of sludge removed during stream rehabilitation (m3) were analyzed in Istanbul, Turkey between 2013 and 2016. Seasonal changes have been identified in these quantities. The quantity of packaging pouches collected during coastal cleaning had increased over time, reached its highest level in 2016. High values ​​were observed in September due to heavy rainfall and in the summer due to waste transported from picnic areas. However, low values ​​were seen for all parameters in winter. This increase in waste quantities can be eliminated by taking various precautions such as recycling or reusing plastic bags and bottles instead of throwing waste away. For a cleaner sea and coast, public education can be developed to encourage these precautions. In addition, economic measures can be taken such as selling plastic shopping bags instead of giving them free of charge.

This study was performed to determine the amount of some elements concentration in bodies of the aquatic insects. The contaminants, in six different polluted and non-polluted cities of Turkey, were determined with using predaceous diving beetles. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy was used for determining the concentrations of heavy metals/metalloids in the total body of the insects. Sixteen elements (Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, and Pb) were measured quantitatively in all the samples. Two elements (In, Sn) were measured below the detection limits of EDXRF. Significant heavy metals/metalloids accumulation was seen in two cities and species. Comparison of the studied bio-monitors, Cybister lateralimarginalis showed significantly higher elements accumulation than the other species, so it may be considered as a more suitable species for assessment of heavy metals/metalloids pollution. The aim of this study is to determine seasonally water quality characteristics irrigation ponds. Surface water samples were collected from three different sampling points in Yenice and Davutköy irrigation ponds (NW Turkey) for four different seasons. The parameters of dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, electrical conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, total hardness, chloride and sodium adsorption rate (SAR) were investigated for Yenice and Davutköy irrigation water quality. According the national and international water quality standards, physicochemical parameters were determined under permissible level. In addition, sampling ponds are located C1−S1 class of ABD salinity diagrams. This result means that salinity and sodium values of water are suitable for ecological system and can be using for irrigation. Furthermore, the microbial quality of irrigation water for the ponds were determined that rate of mesophyll and psychotropic bacteria are connected with temperature. It is detected that the term of low temperature is high level of psychotropic bacteria and the term of high temperature increase the number of mesophyll bacteria. Pearson correlation analysis between the results of the statistical psychotropic aerobic count and temperature significant was found a strong negative correlation (r= -0,635). Fecal pollution indicator as the number of E.coli stations in Davutköy pond in the summer sampling were determined 110 cfu/100ml and 50 cfu/100ml, respectively. E.coli was not detected other stations and sampling time. Finally, according to obtained analysis results are determined that water qualities for Yenice and Davutköy ponds are suitable for agriculture activities.

The aim of this study is to examine the content of heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Al) and the natural radionuclide (238U, 232Th, 40K) content of the olive groves around the highway from Aliağa to Ezine. In general, findings show that total heavy metal contents are more in the subsurface soils. In this regard, total Ni contents of the soils changed between 11-69 mg/kg. It is considered the only threatening heavy metal which exceeded 30 mg/kg critical level especially in the soils of the olive groves in Aliağa Soma, Ayvalık, Edremit and Ezine. Bergama region differed in this regard. The highest of total Pb, Cr and Cd contents in the soils of Aliağa region were found 44.59 mg/kg, 60 mg/kg and 0.81 mg/kg, respectively. These findings are found very close to the reference limit values (50, 100 and 1 mg/kg) reported by different scientists. Natural radioactivities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soils were also measured and found 37.45 and 410 Bq/kg respectivelly which were slightly above the cited limit values (226Ra:35 Bq/kg, 232Th:30 Bq/kg ve 40K:400 Bg/kg). Results in relation to olive leaves indicated that trees were not threatened by the heavy metals in the soils, only in some cases Cr (0.19-0.99 mg/kg) was found over the limit value (0.60 mg/kg). This study was conducted to determine the anionic detergent and phosphate pollution in the coastal area of Gökçeada Island between December 2016 and November 2017. According to the results, the anionic detergent concentrations 0.020-0.051 mg/L and phosphate concentrations 0.008-0.451 mg/L were found between the values. The average concentrations of anionic detergent and phosphate in water samples collected from the island were evaluated according to Water Pollution and Control Regulation in water samples from Gökçeada Island. The island waters were determined as I. class (uncontaminated water) in terms of anionic detergent parameter and II. class (less contaminated water) in terms of phosphate parameter. This study aims to determine heavy metal accumulation levels in the muscles tissues of two economically most important demersal fish species in the Eastern Black Sea, Turkey, red mullet Mullus barbatus and whiting Merlangius merlangus , and evaluate the effects of fish species, sampling locations, fishing season and size groups on heavy metal accumulation levels.
