Synchronized time-resolved schlieren and far-field pressure measurements were used to examine control of a supersonic multi-aperture rectangular single- expansion ramp nozzle with an aft deck. The design contains core (Mach 1.6) and bypass (sonic) streams mixing behind a splitter plate, generating a high-frequency tone. Control was applied through splitter-plate trailing-edge spanwise waviness (passive), spanwise-arranged microjet blowing actuators (active), and their combination (hybrid). Passive and hybrid control successfully alleviate the tone, whereas active control amplifies and alters the tone frequency. Time-averaged schlieren data show changes to mean shock structures with control. Spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) spectra from the raw schlieren data are consistent with the far-field measurements and reveal coherent structural details. Radiation associated with high-frequency structures is inhibited by passive and hybrid control that enhance mixing, but not by active control. Momentum potential theory filtering prior to SPOD application augments the analysis by isolating irrotational content, providing additional clues on acoustic vs hydrodynamic mechanisms. The results indicate shock-shear-layer interaction and shedding as sources of low- and high-frequency content, respectively. As such, through suitable processing, relatively easy-to-obtain high-speed schlieren provides a powerful tool to assess complex flow-control physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We perform a resolvent analysis of a compressible turbulent jet, where the optimisation domain of the response modes is located in the acoustic field, excluding the hydrodynamic region, in order to promote acoustically efficient modes. We examine the properties of the acoustic resolvent and assess its potential for jet-noise modelling, focusing on the subsonic regime. Resolvent forcing modes, consistent with previous studies, are found to contain supersonic waves associated with Mach wave radiation in the response modes. This differs from the standard resolvent in which hydrodynamic instabilities dominate. We compare resolvent modes with SPOD modes educed from LES data. Acoustic resolvent response modes generally have better alignment with acoustic SPOD modes than standard resolvent response modes. For the optimal mode, the angle of the acoustic beam is close to that found in SPOD modes for moderate frequencies. However, there is no significant separation between the singular values of the leading and sub-optimal modes. Some suboptimal modes are furthermore shown to contain irrelevant structure for jet noise. Thus, even though it contains essential acoustic features absent from the standard resolvent approach, the SVD of the acoustic resolvent alone is insufficient to educe a low-rank model for jet noise. But because it identifies the prevailing mechanisms of jet noise, it provides valuable guidelines in the search of a forcing model (Karban et al. in J Fluid Mech 965:18, 2023). This paper reports a parametric investigation of the effect of the nozzle exhaust initial conditions on the wavelet separated acoustic pressure generated by a single stream compressible jet in its near field from a database obtained by Large-Eddy Simulations of jet flows at M = 0.9 and Re = 10 5 . The nozzle–exit boundary–layer conditions consist of different turbulence intensities for fixed thickness and several thicknesses in laminar conditions. Pressure time series are extracted from virtual probes distributed in the near field of the jets and the acoustic components of the near field pressure are extracted using a wavelet-based procedure able to decontaminate the signals from the hydrodynamic contribution. The reconstructed acoustic time series are analyzed in the frequency domain and in terms of Overall Sound Pressure Level (OASPL). The results show that both the boundary-layer thickness and the turbulence level significantly affect the acoustic pressure in terms of both intensity and directivity. In the laminar case, strong sideline components are observed and strongly depend on the boundary layer thickness. These components clearly appearing in the energy spectra are associated with the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability waves. For large nozzle-exit turbulence intensities, the acoustic field is more uniform and less intense in the sideline direction. On the other hand, the streamwise directivity of the acoustic pressure appears to be strictly correlated to the length of the jet potential core which strongly varies with the initial conditions. The experimental investigation of the effects of scarfed nozzles on jet-installation noise was conducted using unheated subsonic jets in an anechoic jet noise facility. Four different types of scarfed nozzles with increasing nozzle lip angles were examined to study the installation effects at various plate distances away from the jet. Mach numbers ranging from 0.3 to 0.8 were investigated in the experiments. The use of scarfed nozzles is known to result in the deflection of flow away from the centre axis, inducing asymmetry in the jet shears, leading to azimuthal variation in the spectra, and ultimately, noise reduction. This study aims to explore the possibility of reducing jet-installation noise using scarfed nozzles at subsonic flow conditions. The characteristics of jet hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations were investigated in the axial direction using far-field measurements. The near-field flow features were studied using surface pressure transducers installed on the flat plate for the installed configurations. Detailed spectral, coherence, and correlation analyses were carried out to determine the noise reduction mechanisms associated with scarfed nozzles in the proximity of a flat plate. The results of the study showed that the use of scarfed nozzles significantly reduced the jet-installation noise. The reduction was attributed to the generation of an asymmetric flow field induced by the nozzle geometry. The reduction in noise levels was also observed to increase with increasing nozzle lip angle. The detailed analyses revealed that the noise reduction mechanism was associated with a decrease in the acoustic power generated by the jet. Flow and acoustic fields of a rectangular over-expanded supersonic jet interacting with an adjacent parallel plate are investigated using compressible Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The jet exits from a converging diverging rectangular nozzle of aspect ratio 2 with a design Mach number 1.5. Four distances (0 to 3 equivalent diameters) between the plate and the adjacent lip of the rectangular jet in the minor axis plane are studied. The geometry of the nozzle, the positions of the plate, and the exit conditions are identical to the ones of an experimental study. Snapshots and mean velocity fields are presented. Good agreement with the PIV experimental measurements is obtained. Previously, the corresponding free jet has been found to undergo a strong flapping motion in the minor axis plane due to screech. Here, it is shown that the intensity of the screech increases for certain distances from the plate and decreases for others, as compared to the corresponding free jet. Two points space-time cross correlations of the pressure along the jet's shear-layers show, in two cases, an amplification of the aeroacoustic feedback mechanism leading to screech noise in the jet shear-layer closer to the plate. This amplification is due to acoustic waves impinging on the plate, and generating propagating waves back towards the jet, thus exciting the shear-layer at the screech frequency, around the tenth shock cell. Moreover, when the jet develops as a wall jet on the plate, the screech frequency and its associated flapping motion is canceled but a symmetrical oscillation of the jet at a lower frequency becomes dominant and radiates in the near acoustic field. This oscillation mode, as the ones associated with the screech tones for the other cases studied, can be explained by the use of a vortex sheet model of the ideally expanded equivalent planar jet. The noise radiated by an isothermal, single-stream jet with a Mach number M = 0.9 and diameter-based Reynolds number ReD = 106 is investigated numerically without and with the presence of a flat plate. Noise sources are predicted with Zonal Detached Eddy Simulations yielding Wall Modelled LES in attached boundary layers (so called ZDES mode 3) together with turbulence tripping inside the nozzle to recover an initially turbulent flow, while radiated pressure is extrapolated with integral methods. Numerical methodology, namely grid and statistical convergence of the signals, is assessed for the isolated jet. Noise levels are accurately simulated at least up to St = 8 and integrated pressure levels collapse within 1 dB with the experiments. In the presence of the plate, a noise radiation methodology based on both Ffowcs Williams Hawkings and Kirchhoff integral methods is proposed to reconstruct the pressure signals at microphone locations with a reduced numerical cost. The simulation compares very favorably with the experimental data, azimuthal noise variations induced by the plate are correctly captured and noise levels collapse within 1 dB. Motivated by the growing concerns for the noise emissions generated by the interaction between the engine jet and the airframe surfaces consequent to the progressive increase of the engine by-pass ratio in commercial aircraft architectures, we study the estimation of the far-field noise radiated by a jet in an installed configuration based on sensor readings in the near field of the jet. We carry out an experimental investigation of the jet-surface interaction phenomena in a simplified set-up where a flat plate is installed parallel to the nozzle axis of a subsonic jet. Real-time estimation is performed using empirical linear transfer functions identified between near-field sensors and far-field observers. The transfer function and the accuracy of the noise estimation performed are characterised as a function of jet flow conditions, type and streamwise position of near-field sensors and radial distance between the jet and the edge. This analysis can guide the positioning of near-field sensors for the implementation of closed-loop control strategies for the jet-surface interaction noise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study explores the flowfield and noise characteristics of an ideally expanded supersonic (Mach 1.44) rectangular jet impinging on a flat surface. The existing literature is primarily concentrated on axisymmetric jets, known for their resonance dominance, pronounced unsteadiness, and acoustic signatures. In contrast, non-axisymmetric jets remain relatively less understood, particularly those impinging on a ground surface. By employing Schlieren imaging, high-frequency pressure measurements using high-bandwidth transducers, and particle image velocimetry (PIV), this research comprehensively examines the flow-acoustic phenomena. Schlieren imaging revealed distinct, coherent structures and strong acoustic waves, while pressure measurements at the impingement surface exhibited high-amplitude fluctuations, peaking at approximately 186 dB. Acoustic analysis identified multiple high-amplitude tones with unique directional characteristics, suggesting the potential for multiple simultaneous modes in rectangular jets. Furthermore, the PIV data elucidated differences in the jet shear layer and wall jet development attributed to the nozzle orientation. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of non-axisymmetric jet behavior, offering insights relevant to fundamental flow physics and practical applications such as vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Objective The jet noise generated by the main circuit breaker switching valve of high-speed railway EMU is excessively high, which seriously affects passenger comfort. Therefore, it is essential to study effective noise reduction measures. Method Field experiments are conducted to measure the jet noise of the switching valve, revealing a noise level as high as 96 dB with noticeable intermittency and pulsation. Using LES (large eddy simulation), a mathematical model for simulating the jet noise of the switching valve is established. Four different nozzle shapes are selected, and their flow velocity distribution nephograms are computed. The calculated jet flow results are imported into LMS.Virtual.Lab software, and the acoustic boundary element method is employed to simulate the jet noise fields of the four nozzles. The simulated 1/3-octave frequency spectrum values for them are compared with experimentally measured values. Finally, four existing industrial mufflers and a developed new structural composite material muffler are selected and tested for their noise reduction effectiveness on the switching valve. Result & Conclusion Generated by main circuit breaker disconnection, the jet noise of the switching valve is closely related to the shape of the exhaust port and falls into the mid-to-high-frequency noise range. All five mufflers can significantly reduce the jet noise from the switching valve, with the new structural composite material muffler demonstrating the best noise reduction effect, achieving a reduction of up to 20 dB.

It is a distinct privilege to produce this article to honor Professor Tam, the foremost authority on jet aeroacoustics. The fundamental characteristics of jet noise have been studied for 70 years, since the pioneering work of Lighthill in the 1950s. The acoustic analogy, with many variants, has served as the leading theory for nearly 50 years. Many leading researchers in the 1970s formulated theories to interpret the measured trends from subsonic and supersonic jets, using acoustic analogy and flow features as the framework. Quadrupoles, dipoles and monopoles were believed to constitute the sources of noise. The discovery of large-scale organized structures in free shear layers and jets sparked a different avenue of thinking about their importance for noise generation. Tam was the first to clearly demonstrate that these structures are efficient generators of noise and constitute the dominant noise sources, especially in the downstream direction. Now, two schools of thought emerged on the sources of jet noise. Experimental measurements showed that the mean flow as well as the turbulence statistics exhibit a self-similarity in the mixing layer and another similarity in the fully developed jet. Based on these observations, Tam proposed that since noise is generated by the turbulence of the jet, the noise spectra generated by fine-scale and large-scale turbulence should also exhibit self-similarity. By examining a large set of supersonic jet noise data acquired at NASA Langley, Tam offered evidence that the turbulent mixing noise of high-speed jets does consist of two independent self-similar components. In this paper, experimental evidence is compiled from an extensive database that quantifies the effect of several parameters that affect jet spectra. A new scaling method is developed and extended to noise predictions for realistic dual-stream nozzle geometries. The objectives of this paper are to serve as a synthesis of noise characteristics and to focus on application to real-world problems. Results from five different experimental measurements are examined: (1) farfield spectral characteristics; (2) azimuthal and polar correlations in the farfield; (3) correlations of jet turbulence fluctuations and farfield sound; (4) measurement of source distributions with an elliptic mirror; and (5) space-time correlation measurements in the nearfield with a cage array, and nearfield-farfield correlations. Two distinctly different trends are observed in the angular ranges of 50° – ∼120° and ∼120° – 165° for all the parameters investigated with the above five approaches. The salient observations are mutually supporting, and the cumulative weight lends credence to the proposition that there are two distinct sources of turbulent mixing noise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A scale model experimental study is conducted addressing howl occurring during engine tests in the Propulsion Systems Laboratory (PSL) of NASA Glenn Research Center. The aim is to understand the sources of the howling noise and find possible remedies. It is shown that a jet discharged into the model of the PSL entrance duct gives rise to high levels of low frequency noise. This occurs apparently due to duct acoustic modes randomly excited by the jet. Wire-mesh screens of various mesh size and configuration as well as tabs, placed at the end of the model duct, are shown to affect the noise. Comparative effects of these configurations are studied, and some are found to alleviate the low-frequency noise significantly. Based on these results, the equivalent of a 4-mesh screen is recommended as the end treatment for the duct of the PSL facility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Turbulent mixing noise is a vital component of jet noise, and its rapid, accurate prediction has always been persistently pursued. Recent advancement in machine learning has been applied to jet noise prediction. However, these applications are pure curve fitting and lack physical constraints. In this study, a physics-merged deep neural network (PMNN)-based prediction method was developed for turbulent mixing jet noise by merging the physics of the jet noise. This deep neural network (DNN)-based method employed recent advancements in jet turbulent mixing noise containing large- and fine-scale turbulence structures. Two simple rational functions for large- and fine-scale turbulent noise similarity spectra were proposed to replace the original complex similarity spectra functions and incorporated into the DNN-based prediction method. For comparison, we present two data-driven DNN-based prediction methods (DDNN). The first DDNN method used the sound pressure level (SPL) as the output of neural networks, directly establishing the nonlinear relationship between the input features and SPL. In the second DDNN method, the dominant modes of the jet noise spectra extracted using the proper orthogonal decomposition method were merged with DNN. These DNN-based methods were then trained using a set of experimental data over a wide range of jet operating conditions. Their performance was evaluated and compared. It was evident that all these DNN-based methods were capable of predicting turbulent mixing noise reasonably well. In contrast to the DDNN methods, the PMNN method could provide insights into the jet turbulent mixing noise components. It demonstrates that the turbulent mixing jet noise spectra at the mid polar angle is generated by the large-scale noise component at low-frequency range and by the fine-scale noise component at high-frequency range. Jet noise generated by turbofan engines which are designed for supersonic aircraft operation is expected to remain a challenge for the aerospace industry. For civil supersonic transport, low bypass ratio engines with internal mixing and external plugs are currently seen as promising exhaust architecture to meet aircraft mission and certification requirements. Measurements of the noise from a representative low-bypass ratio long duct mixed flow with external plug exhaust configuration were made, along with corresponding steady-RANS and LES analyses. The measured data showed excess high frequency noise across a wide range of operating conditions as compared to an equivalent single stream jet, or an equivalent uniform jet with internal plug. The absolute levels of the excess noise were relatively insensitive to forward flight, and the excess noise was most dominant when the primary and secondary streams had large velocity and temperature mismatch just upstream of the internal mixer. Preliminary indications from the LES analysis also indicated that significant pressure fluctuations, at the same frequencies which are insensitive to forward flight, develop inside the nozzle as the internal shear layer from the mixer grows and gets accelerated by the external plug. Parametric study test measurements on the fan and core operating conditions were performed, providing support for the hypothesis that the excess noise is generated as the internal shear layer, starting inside the nozzle, gets accelerated by the plug and passes through the weak shock at the nozzle exit where the flow accelerates more and turns over the external plug. The differences between the acoustic tones generated by impinging jets with laminar and highly-disturbed nozzle-exit boundary layers are investigated. For that, jets at Mach numbers between 0.6 and 1.3 impinging on a flat plate at a distance of 8 nozzle radii from the nozzle exit are computed using large-eddy simulations. The amplitudes of the tones generated by the jets through feedback loops establishing between the nozzle and the plate are found to be significantly affected by the exit turbulent disturbances. In the present study, overall, they are lower for the initially laminar jets than for the initially disturbed ones. The level decrease varies from a few dB up to 15 dB, depending on the tones, which can change the frequencies of the dominant tones and the numbers and azimuthal structures of their associated feedback modes. For Mach numbers 0.75 and 0.8, for instance, the dominant tone frequencies are approximately two times lower for the initially laminar jets than for the other ones, yielding a better agreement with experiments of the literature in the former case. For a Mach number of 1.1, as a second example, the dominant tone is associated with the axisymmetric third feedback mode in the laminar case but with the helical fifth feedback mode in the disturbed case. The differences in the tone amplitude are finally discussed by estimating the power gains of the shear-layer instability waves between the nozzle and the plate using linear stability analysis for the axisymmetric mode. This introduction provides a brief personal background and highlights the scientific accomplishments of Professor Christopher Tam. He has maintained extremely high standards of research and an enviable track record for productivity, spanning more than five decades. The depth and breadth of his technical output are truly breathtaking, and he has inspired scores of researchers and graduate students. When the first author was an Acoustics Engineer at Lockheed, Georgia, he started collaborating with Chris in the early 1990s. There were several joint projects when the author moved to Boeing, which encompassed both fundamental research and applications. The second author has an even longer association with Chris, initially as a PhD advisee in the late 1980s and then as a co-researcher. In this special volume we pay tribute to Chris's many achievements, an endeavor that provides us with great satisfaction and which is long overdue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the results of an experimental study of a subsonic turbulent jet noise. The cases of an isolated jet and a jet in the presence of a closely spaced plate are considered. The studies were carried out for the conical and equivalent-sized chevron and lobed nozzles. The twin-jet configuration allows two different scenarios to close the screech feedback. For each jet, there is one loop involving disturbances which originate in that jet and arrive at its own receptivity point in phase (self-excitation). The other loop is associated with free-stream acoustic waves that radiate from the other jet, reinforcing the self-excited screech (cross-excitation). In this work, the role of the free-stream acoustic mode and the guided-jet mode as a closure mechanism for twin rectangular jet screech is explored by identifying eligible points of return for each path, where upstream waves propagating from such a point arrive at the receptivity location with an appropriate phase relation. Screech tones generated by these jets are found to be intermittent with an out-of-phase coupling as a dominant coupling mode. The instantaneous phase difference between the twin jets computed by the Hilbert transform suggests that a competition between out-of-phase and in-phase coupling is responsible for the intermittency. To model wave components of the screech feedback while ensuring perfect phase locking, an ensemble average of leading spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes is obtained from several segments of large-eddy simulation data that correspond to periods of invariant phase difference between the two jets. Each mode is then extracted by retaining relevant wavenumber components produced via a streamwise Fourier transform. Spatial cross-correlation analysis of the resulting modes shows that most of the identified points of return for the cross-excitation are synchronised with the guided jet mode self-excitation, supporting that it is preferred in closing rectangular twin-jet screech coupling. We study coherent structures in subsonic turbulent jets subject to a flight stream. A thorough characterisation of the effects of a flight stream on the turbulent field was recently performed by Maia et al. (Phys. Rev. Fluids , vol. 8, 2023, 063902) and fluctuation energy attenuations were observed over a broad range of frequencies and azimuthal wavenumbers. The Kelvin–Helmholtz, Orr and lift-up mechanisms were all shown to be weakened by the flight stream. Here we expand upon that study and model the changes in the dynamics of jets in flight using global resolvent analysis. The resolvent model is found to correctly capture the main effects of the flight stream on the dynamics of coherent structures, which are educed from a large-eddy simulation database using spectral proper orthogonal decomposition. Three modifications of note are: the damping of low-frequency streaky/Orr structures that carry most of the fluctuation energy; a degradation of the low-rank behaviour of the jet in frequencies where modal instability mechanisms are dominant; and a rank decrease at very low Strouhal numbers. The latter effect is underpinned by larger gain separations predicted by the resolvent analysis, due to a reduction in the wavelength of associated flow structures. This leads to a clearer relative dominance of streaky structures generated by the lift-up mechanism, despite the fact that the lift-up mechanism has been weakened with respect to the static jet. The influence of the boundary layer (BL) thickness on the tonal noise generated by subsonic impinging jets is investigated. For that, initially laminar jets at Mach numbers $0.6$ and $0.9$ with BL thicknesses $0.05r_0$ , $0.1r_0$ and $0.2r_0$ , where $r_0$ is the pipe-nozzle radius, impinging on a plate at $6r_0$ from the nozzle, are simulated. For Mach number $0.9$ , acoustic tones due to feedback loops of axisymmetric nature between the nozzle and the plate are generated at frequencies that do not vary with the BL thickness. The two dominant tones are, however, $17$ and $26\ \mathrm {dB}$ stronger for the thickest BL compared with the thinnest one. For Mach number $0.6$ , for the thinnest BL no acoustic peaks appear, as observed in the experiments of the literature, but narrow peaks resulting from axisymmetric feedback loops emerge for thicker BLs. Therefore, low subsonic impinging jets can be resonant for specific nozzle-exit conditions. The increase in tone amplitude for Mach number $0.9$ , and the establishment of feedback loops for Mach number $0.6$ with increasing BL thickness, are found to result from two changes in the jet flow. The first change is that the shear-layer laminar–turbulent transition occurs farther downstream for a thicker BL, leading to a greater predominance of the axisymmetric aerodynamic fluctuations near the plate. The second change is that the amplification of the flow fluctuations between the nozzle and the plate at the tone frequencies is stronger for thicker BLs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heated supersonic rectangular twin jets (SRTJ) with a total temperature ratio of 2, using nozzles of design Mach number 1.5 and aspect ratio 2, were investigated in flow regimes from overexpanded to the design condition (Mj  = 1.3–1.5). This work complements our recently published work in unheated SRTJ using the same experimental facility (Samimy et al. , J. Fluid Mech , vol. 959, 2023, A13). Localized arc filament plasma actuators (LAFPAs) were used to excite the natural instabilities in the jets, thereby controlling the flow and acoustics. The results show that the jets were coupled primarily out-of-phase in overexpanded cases, that the coupling had significant effects on the near-field (NF) pressure fluctuations, and that these fluctuations were considerably higher for in-phase than for out-of-phase coupled cases. The results also revealed that the far-field (FF) overall sound pressure level is significantly higher on the minor axis plane of the SRTJ and that the onset of Mach wave radiation contributes to the increased acoustic radiation at the peak noise direction. The LAFPAs successfully controlled the coupling and were able to reduce the NF pressure fluctuations by 10 dB. However, only 1 to 2 dB FF noise reduction at the peak noise radiation direction was achieved. The overall trends of the baseline results and response of the flow to excitation are qualitatively similar in unheated and heated cases, but the details are significantly different. The aeroacoustic feedback loops in high-speed circular jets that impinge on a large flat plate are investigated via acoustic measurements and schlieren visualizations. In the present experiments, the nozzle pressure ratio ranges from 1.39 to 2.20, the corresponding ideally expanded jet Mach number Mj is from 0.70 to 1.12 and the nozzle-to-plate distance (H) is from 4.0D to 6.0D, where D is the nozzle exit diameter. The results of acoustic measurements show that the strongest tones are generated in a limited frequency band. The empirical dispersion relations obtained from the fluctuating greyscales along the jet centreline of time-resolved schlieren images have good agreement with the dispersion relations from the vortex-sheet model. The coherent flow structures at tonal frequencies are extracted by spectral proper orthogonal decomposition and are analysed in detail. For the Mj < 0.82 jets, the upstream-propagating guided jet mode is progressively confined to the potential core of jets with increasing tonal frequency, which provides the first direct experimental support for theoretical results. The evolution in the structures of acoustic resonance loops is studied along a single frequency stage of axisymmetric impinging tones. When the acoustic resonance between the upstream- and downstream-propagating guided jet modes is formed at tonal frequencies, the impinging tones are intenser. Slightly underexpanded impinging jets can simultaneously produce impingement tones and screech tones. Shock-cell structures have modulatory effects on the downstream-propagating Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepacket and the upstream- and downstream-propagating guided jet modes. Due to the interaction between the flow structures at the frequencies of impinging and screech tones, tones of axisymmetric modes can be produced outside the frequency ranges in which the axisymmetric upstream-propagating guided jet modes are supported by jets. A computational analysis is performed to study the three-dimensional response of rectangular shear layers to plasma actuator-based control, in the context of sound mitigation of supersonic non-axisymmetric jets. A Mach 1.5 rectangular jet with an aspect ratio 2 : 1 is controlled using experimentally informed actuation patterns, referred to as M0, M1, M2, M3, Mπ and M+/−1. While the first five progressively increase the phase difference between successive actuators thus enhancing three-dimensionality of the shear layer structures, the latter corresponds to the flapping mode of the jet. A preliminary linear analysis identifies that the frequency, St ∼ 1, has a relatively high overall amplification within the baseline shear layer, and is hence utilized for control in the subsequent nonlinear simulations. Each actuation reveals unique near-field vortical and acoustic responses that have a profound impact on far-field noise levels. The M0 actuation induces circumferentially interconnected strong streamwise vortices, while M1 actuation enhances the circumferential variability in the coherent structures. The M2 actuation encompasses both these effects, and along with a very low tonal impact of forcing, produces the most desirable far-field noise mitigation (∼2.6 dB), contributed by a broadband reduction around the column-mode peak of the baseline jet. Beyond M2 actuation, effectiveness of control saturates, particularly along the direction of peak noise radiation. Through a near-field analysis of the acoustic component, the efficacy of M2 actuation is attributed to the attenuation of the radiative efficiency of the jet, including reduced energy in the supersonic phase speeds, and redistribution of energy into the higher helical modes. Further, it curtails the nonlinear difference interactions in the plume that energize column-mode frequencies, which often appear as strong intermittent sound-producing events. While the shear layer turbulent kinetic energy decreases with actuation, the controlled jets show minimal variations in mean flow properties, particularly under M2 actuation, suggesting this to be a promising small-perturbation-based noise control strategy. Real-time monitoring is crucial to assess hazards and mitigate risks of sustained volcanic eruptions that last hours to months or more. Sustained eruptions have been shown to produce a low frequency (infrasonic) form of jet noise. We analyze the lava fountaining at fissure 8 during the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii, and connect changes in fountain properties with recorded infrasound signals from an array about 500 m from the fountain using jet noise scaling laws and visual imagery. Video footage from the eruption reveals a change in lava fountain dynamics from a tall, distinct fountain at the beginning of June to a low fountain with a turbulent, out-pouring lava pond surrounded by a tephra cone by mid-June. During mid-June, the sound pressure level reaches a maximum, and peak frequency drops. We develop a model that uses jet noise scaling relationships to estimate changes in volcanic jet diameter and jet velocity from infrasound sound pressure levels and peak frequencies. The results of this model indicate a decrease in velocity in mid-June which coincides with the decrease in fountain height. Furthermore, the model results suggest an increase in jet diameter, which can be explained by the larger width of the fountain that resembles a turbulent lava pond compared to the distinct fountain at the beginning of June. The agreement between the infrasound-derived and visually observed changes in fountain dynamics suggests that jet noise scaling relationships can be used to monitor lava fountain dynamics using infrasound recordings.

The current study explores the flowfield and noise characteristics of an ideally expanded supersonic (Mach 1.44) rectangular jet impinging on a flat surface. The existing literature is primarily concentrated on axisymmetric jets, known for their resonance dominance, pronounced unsteadiness, and acoustic signatures. In contrast, non-axisymmetric jets remain relatively less understood, particularly those impinging on a ground surface. By employing Schlieren imaging, high-frequency pressure measurements using high-bandwidth transducers, and particle image velocimetry (PIV), this research comprehensively examines the flow-acoustic phenomena. Schlieren imaging revealed distinct, coherent structures and strong acoustic waves, while pressure measurements at the impingement surface exhibited high-amplitude fluctuations, peaking at approximately 186 dB. Acoustic analysis identified multiple high-amplitude tones with unique directional characteristics, suggesting the potential for multiple simultaneous modes in rectangular jets. Furthermore, the PIV data elucidated differences in the jet shear layer and wall jet development attributed to the nozzle orientation. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of non-axisymmetric jet behavior, offering insights relevant to fundamental flow physics and practical applications such as vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Linear stability theory (LST) is often used to model the large-scale flow structures in the turbulent mixing region and near pressure field of high-speed jets. For perfectly expanded single round jets, these models predict the dominance of azimuthal wavenumbers m = 0 and m = 1 helical modes for the lower frequency range, in agreement with empirical data. When LST is applied to twin-jet systems, four solution families appear following the odd/even behaviour of the pressure field about the symmetry planes. The interaction between the unsteady pressure fields of the two jets also results in their coupling. The individual modes of the different solution families no longer correspond to helical motions, but to flapping oscillations of the jet plumes. In the limit of large jet separations, when the jet coupling vanishes, the eigenvalues corresponding to the m = 1 mode in each family are identical, and a linear combination of them recovers the helical motion. Conversely, as the jet separation decreases, the eigenvalues for the m = 1 modes of each family diverge, thus favouring a particular flapping oscillation over the others and preventing the appearance of helical motions. The dominant mode of oscillation for a given jet Mach number Mj and temperature ratio TR depends on the Strouhal number St and jet separation s. Increasing both Mj and TR independently is found to augment the jet coupling and modify the (St, s) map of the preferred oscillation mode. Present results predict the preference of two modes when the jet interaction is relevant, namely varicose and especially sinuous flapping oscillations on the nozzles' plane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of a study of noise reduction in a subsonic turbulent jet using a lobed nozzle section are presented. Lobed nozzles with 6–12 lobes of different heights were considered. The experiments were carried out in two anechoic chambers: an anechoic chamber with aerodynamic noise sources at the Laboratory of Noise Generation Mechanisms and Modal Analysis of PNRPU and the AC-2 anechoic chamber with flow at TsAGI. The sound field of a subsonic jet flowing from a lobed nozzle was compared with the sound field of an equivalent round jet. The paper demonstrates ways to expand the frequency range in which jet noise is reduced using lobed nozzles. The thrust losses in lobed nozzles based on RANS calculation are estimated. This paper investigates the nonlinear evolution and acoustic radiation of coherent structures (CS) in the near-nozzle region of a subsonic turbulent circular jet. A CS is taken to be a wavepacket consisting of multiple ring/helical modes, which are considered to be inviscid instability waves supported by the mean-flow profile. As the three-dimensionality of helical modes is weak in the near-nozzle region, the ring and helical modes with the same frequency have nearly the same growth rates and critical levels. They coexist and interact with each other in their common critical layer at high Reynolds numbers. The self and mutual quadratic interactions generate a mean-flow distortion and streaks, which act back on the fundamental components through the cubic interaction. The amplitude of the CS is governed by an integro-partial-differential equation, a significant feature of which is that differentiations with respect to the azimuthal coordinate appear in the history-dependent nonlinear terms. The non-parallelism of the mean flow as well as the impact of fine-scale turbulence on CS are taken into account and found to affect the nonlinear terms. By solving the amplitude equation, the development of the constituting modes, streamwise vortices and streaks are described. For CS consisting of frequency sideband, low-frequency components are excited nonlinearly and amplify to reach a considerable level. By analysing the large-distance asymptote of the perturbation, the low-frequency acoustic waves are found to be emitted by the temporally-spatially varying mean-flow distortion and streaks generated by the nonlinear interactions of the CS, and are thereby determined on the basis of first principles. Interestingly, the energetic part of the streaky structure that contributes to the nonlinear dynamics does not radiate directly, and instead the Reynolds stresses driving the subdominant radiating components represent the true physical sources. Often, lossless jet-noise data obtained by various researchers in different facilities do not match after accounting for jet operating conditions, measurement distance, and nozzle dimensions using accepted jet-noise scaling laws. There have been a number of explanations for these differences, but the most contentious of these is attributing rig-noise contamination to be the cause of the differences. This reasoning calls all the measurements that have been acquired in the facility into question. Knowing if jet noise is contaminated by rig noise in a given facility is crucial to obtaining high-quality jet-noise data, and a simple method is needed to determine if rig noise is indeed present in a given set of measurements. One such method is the so-called doubling-diameter method that was first published by the second author. Validation of this method is the focus of the present study. This validation was conducted using cylindrical obstructions upstream of the nozzle exit. Not only it is shown that this method can accurately detect rig-noise contamination, but in a case study, the Georgia Tech Research Institute Anechoic Jet Facility is shown to be free of rig-noise contamination. Jet noise is a common problem in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) technology. This should be given great attention because of its serious impacts on the physical and mental health of the operators. In this study, a micro-grooved nozzle is proposed based on the noise reduction concept of biological micro-grooves. The flow field and acoustic characteristics of an original nozzle and a micro-grooved nozzle were investigated numerically to help better understand the noise reduction mechanism. The reasons for noise generation and the effects of the length (L), width (W) and depth (δ) of the micro-grooves on noise reduction were analyzed. It was found that jet noise is generated by the large-scale vortex ring structure and the pressure fluctuations caused by its motion. The overall sound pressure level (OASPL) decreased with the increases in W and δ, and increased with the increase in L. Among of them, δ has the greatest effect on noise reduction. The maximum noise reduction achieved was 6.66 dB, as verified by the OASPL test. Finally, the noise reduction mechanism was discussed in terms of the flow field, vorticity and the frequency characteristics. Micro-grooves can enhance the mixing of airflow inside the nozzle and accelerate the process of large-scale vortices breaking into smaller-scale vortices. Abstract Subsonic jet nozzles, commonly used in passenger aircrafts, generate significant noise that travels both downstream and upstream due to large-scale or fine-scale turbulence in the jet plume. To reduce jet noise, a novel wall treatment method, termed the wavy inner wall (WIW), is proposed. With this method, the smooth inner wall near the exit of the nozzle is replaced by treated walls that carry small wavy patterns. Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of the WIW treatment. Large eddy simulations (LES) were used to predict the unsteady flow field and the far-field noise, followed by the analogy method proposed by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings. To better understand the mechanism behind the noise reduction achieved by the WIW treatment, the shear-layer instability, radial and azimuthal auto-correlation functions, turbulent kinetic energy, and acoustic source term from the Tam-Auriault (TA) jet-noise model were analyzed. Results indicated that the WIW treatment advances the onset of jet flow instability in the shear-layer, leading to the early breakdown of jet shear-layer and production of different scales of downstream turbulent structures. As a result, the distribution and production of turbulent kinetic energy are affected, and the generation and emission of jet noise are controlled. The WIW treatment enables the control of fine scale turbulence, resulting in the reduction of mid- to high-frequency noise in the far field, while ensuring a low thrust loss. This feature makes the WIW method a promising approach for jet noise control.

We construct reduced-order models of aeroacoustic sources for single and twin subsonic jets ($M_j=0.9$ , $Re=3600$), with the goal of accurately recovering the far-field sound over a wide band of frequencies $St=[0.07,1.0]$ and directivity angles $\phi = [30^{\circ },120^{\circ }]$ within a subdecibel level accuracy. These models are realized via combining spatio-temporally coherent spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) modes extracted directly from Lighthill's stress tensor, itself calculated using large-eddy simulation (LES). We consider two sets of twin subsonic jets of diameter $D$ each, with spacings of $0.1D$ and $1D$ , where the jets merge upstream and downstream of breakdown, respectively. The closely spaced twin jet decays the slowest due to reduced turbulent stresses which are, however, more broadband due to early merging. Such jets show strong shielding in the plane of jets, especially at shallow directivity angles where sound levels may drop below that of the single jet. The farther spaced twin jets have dynamics more akin to the constituent single jet with turbulent fluctuations peaking here at $St=0.34$ , but showing very little shielding, with their overall sound pressure level (OASPL) mostly linked to the nature of extra flow structures created during merging. Three-dimensional, energy-ranked, coherent structures for twin jets exhibit rather poor low-rank behaviour, especially at the far-field spectral peak $St=0.14$. At $St \gtrsim 0.3$ , the SPOD wavepackets show strong visual coherence, resembling Kelvin–Helmholtz instability modes upstream of breakdown, while at the lower frequencies, there is very little spatial coherence with wavepackets peaking downstream of breakdown. Although the leading SPOD modes radiate poorly, reduced-order models using a subset of them, up to $45$ SPOD modes per frequency, show a remarkable match (within $1$  dB) against the LES-predicted sound over $0.1 \lesssim St \lesssim 0.5$ , at all angles investigated. At other frequencies, the closely spaced twin jet shows more error, due to its greater hierarchy of spatio-temporal structures, showing slower convergence at the shallower angles. Prof. Krish Ahuja has a longstanding interest in jet noise source location. His work in this area is grounded in the idea that if the assumed source location is correct, then the sound should obey the inverse square law relative to that point and the phase should be constant along lines originating at that point. He applied this with, conceptually, one microphone in 1985 and two microphones in 1998. In 2006 he commissioned a beamforming system, Array 48, from OptiNav, Inc. His student, Nick Breen, used this to measure subsonic jet noise source location in detail. The NASA-Glenn Research Center also purchased an Array 48. In the current work, a jet noise data set measured by Gary Podboy using Glenn's array in 2008 is revisited with a new beamforming algorithm, Robust Functional Beamforming, to further support Tam's two-source model and Breen's source location. Beamforming with modified steering vectors is performed to measure the parameters of the wavepacket source model from the far field. This process suggested replacing the wavepacket spatial length parameter with a temporal lifetime parameter. Another steering vector modification aimed to measure modes with odd spinning order. It seems to have found them at an apparent location 10 jet diameters removed from the jet, laterally. This is tentatively interpreted as a Mach radius phenomenon like one observed by Csaba Horvath at NASA-Glenn, also using Array 48, to study counter-rotating propeller noise. In an observation unrelated to beamforming, the excess noise measured at 40° from the jet axis as compared with the 90° angle, is fully contained in the first few cross spectral matrix eigenvalues, or Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition modes, in some cases. This paper provides some personal background, technical achievements, and a few testimonials from those who Professor Krishan Kumar Ahuja has worked with throughout his career. I have known Krish as an advisor, a colleague, and as someone I would consider a friend since my graduate school enrollment at Georgia Tech. He not only supported my research in pursuit of an MS and PhD but has been a constant reliable source of technical and professional advice throughout my young career and today, over 30 years later. This paper contains contributions from Krish's wife Philippa, and from several students and colleagues. It has information from a small subset of many people that Krish has mentored and influenced and worked with over the years. It serves as a starting point for this special edition tribute to Dr Krish Ahuja and his half century of contributions in acoustics. Although Dr. Ahuja's contributions in jet noise are arguably his most foundational work, he has made significant technical contributions in the areas of cavity noise, engine acoustic liner technologies, rotorcraft and UAV noise, advanced flow and noise measurements and diagnostics, active flow and noise control, and many others. The subsequent papers to follow in this special edition cover a range of topics in areas exemplary to Dr. Ahuja's career and from authors he has worked with and influenced over the years. The effect of external nozzle geometry on the emission of screech tones was studied experimentally. Four conical reflector surfaces, with half-angles ranging from 60° to 90°, were installed around the exit of a round convergent nozzle. The investigation focused on two closely spaced fully-expanded Mach numbers, M j = 1.32 and 1.34. The acoustic far-field was surveyed by a microphone phased array that included a continuously-scanning microphone, the latter enabling high spatial resolution. The isolated jets contained well-known screech mode B and its harmonics. Addition of the reflectors caused significant changes in the modal emission pattern, with tones traditionally linked to mode C occurring at M j = 1.34 but not at M j = 1.32. Tonal components associated with new modes E and F emerge at both Mach numbers when the cone half-angle is 60° or 70°. The noise source distribution generally elongates with decreasing cone angle. Some modes show clear scattering from the reflectors, while others do not. The study underscores the complexity that initial conditions can impart on the modal structure of screech and demonstrates the capability of the continuous-scan beamforming technique in resolving fine features of the source. A set of 2-inch diameter nozzles is used to investigate the effect of varying exit boundary layer (BL) states on the radiated noise from high-subsonic jets. It is confirmed that nozzles involving turbulent boundary layers are the quietest while others, involving nominally-laminar BLs, are noisier. A turbulent BL is thicker and there is simply an effect of thickness on noise. A thicker BL results in a decrease in the sound pressure spectral amplitudes due to a less vigorous growth of instability waves in the jet's shear layer. A nominally-laminar BL, besides being thinner, may also involve significantly higher turbulence intensities, much higher than that in a turbulent BL. Such a BL state, referred to as 'highly disturbed laminar', results in the largest noise amplitudes especially on the high-frequency side of the spectrum. This transitional state, often encountered with model scale nozzles, involves a 'Blasius-like' mean velocity profile but large velocity fluctuation intensities and intermittency. The higher initial turbulence adds to the increase in high-frequency noise. The results leave little doubt that an anomaly noted with subsonic jet noise databases in the literature is due to similar effects of differences in the initial boundary layer state. The Reynolds number and Mach number are classical quantities used to determine the similarity of aerodynamic flows. Existing studies on the role of Reynolds Number on jet noise show inconsistent results, casting doubt on how small a nozzle diameter can be for the classical jet noise scaling laws to hold. A systematic study was therefore undertaken to resolve this issue. The Reynolds number of jet flows was adjusted using a Mach number variation between 0.4 and 0.8, and nozzle-exit diameters of 0.25, 0.5, and two inches. When the jet noise measurements were normalized, spectral collapse was observed for the spectra across the whole Reynolds number range. It was found that the Reynolds number does not have a significant effect on jet noise, and jet noise can be scaled from even the smallest of nozzle to larger nozzles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A rocket's turbulent jet radiates intense acoustic waves, which are an acoustic load for structural components like payload, launch structure, and rocket avionics, and impact communities near the launch site. Therefore, a careful characterization of the acoustic field produced by a rocket engine can provide crucial information during the design phase. In particular, this deals with improving the understanding of the acoustics of low-thrust hybrid rocket engines. Since an accurate jet noise detection around the entire launch site is time-consuming and extremely cost-prohibitive, a fast and reliable predictive tool is invaluable. For this purpose, a semi-empirical model was employed, using the exhaust plume property and geometric characteristics of the nozzle as input. Experimental data collected during a firing test campaign, conducted in the framework of HYPROB-NEW project by the Italian Aerospace Research Center, were decisive to discuss the validity of the model also for low-thrust hybrid propulsion and support the goodness of the noise curves and metrics estimated for nearby regions and provide considerations about the implications of engine geometric characteristics on noise emissions. Scientific research studies on jet noise generation have been ongoing since the early 1950s, when turbojets were first used in commercial aircraft. Several numerical methods have been developed with the aim of reducing the environmental issues related to the impact of jet noise on community annoyance. Among them, the development of fast and comprehensive tools for jet noise prediction captured the attention of researchers and engineers, being very useful in the preliminary design phase of aircraft engines. This work deals with an extensive survey of James R. Stone's models, initially formulated for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) by Modern Technologies Corporation (MTC), and their implementation in a contemporary numerical framework. The models and their implementation are validated by simulating different engine settings and nozzle configurations taken from the literature with the main scope of highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the different semi-empirical formulations and setting guidelines for their effective use during the design phases of the next generation of supersonic aircraft. Spatial linear stability analysis is used to study the axisymmetric screech tones generated by twin converging round nozzles at low supersonic Mach numbers. Vortex-sheet and finite-thickness models allow for identification of the different waves supported by the flow at different conditions. Regions of the frequency-wavenumber domain for which the upstream-propagating guided jet modes are observed to be neutrally stable are observed to vary as a function of solution symmetry, jet separation, S, and the velocity profile used. Screech-frequency predictions performed using wavenumbers obtained from both models agree well with experimental data. Predictions obtained from the finite-thickness model better align with the screech tones measured experimentally and so are seen to be an improvement on predictions made with the vortex sheet. Additionally, results from the finite-thickness model predict both symmetric and antisymmetric screech tones for low S that are found in the vortex-sheet model only at greater S. The present results indicate that the feedback loop generating these screech tones is similar to that observed for single-jet resonance, with equivalent upstream and downstream modes. Modelling the noise emitted by turbulent jets is made difficult by their acoustic inefficiency: only a tiny fraction of the near-field turbulent kinetic energy is propagated to the far field as acoustic waves. As a result, jet-noise models must accurately capture this small, acoustically efficient component hidden among comparatively inefficient fluctuations. In this paper, we identify this acoustically efficient near-field source from large-eddy simulation data and use it to inform a predictive model. Our approach uses the resolvent framework, in which the source takes the form of nonlinear fluctuation terms that act as a forcing on the linearised Navier-Stokes equations. First, we identify the forcing that, when acted on by the resolvent operator, produces the leading spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes in the acoustic field for a Mach 0.4 jet. Second, the radiating components of this forcing are isolated by retaining only portions with a supersonic phase speed. This component makes up less than 0.05% of the total forcing energy but generates most of the acoustic response, especially at peak (downstream) radiation angles. Finally, we propose an empirical model for the identified acoustically efficient forcing components. The model is tested at other Mach numbers and flight-stream conditions and predicts noise within 2 dB accuracy for a range of frequencies, downstream angles and flight conditions. We perform a computational study on the effects of localized arc filament plasma actuator based control on the flow field and acoustics of a supersonic 2:1 aspect ratio rectangular jet. Post validation of the baseline jet, effects of control in the context of noise reduction are studied at experimentally guided forcing parameters, including frequencies $St=0.3, 1.0$ and $St=2.0$ with duty cycles of $20\,\%$ and $50\,\%$. In general, high-frequency forcing reduces noise in the downstream direction, with the actuator signature appearing mostly in the sideline direction. Here $St=1$ , ${\rm DC}=50\,\%$ yields an optimum balance between peak noise reduction (of ${\sim }1.5$  dB) and actuator tones, with control being most effective on the major axis plane that bisects the shorter edges of the nozzle. Shear layer response to the most effective forcing includes generation of successive arrays of mutually interacting staggered lambda vortices, which eventually energize streamwise vortical elements. Causal mechanisms of noise mitigation are further elucidated as follows. First, the control reduces the energy within the supersonic phase speed regime of peak radiating frequencies by redistributing a part of it into a high-frequency band. Second, it enhances azimuthal percolation of energy into the first and second helical modes at frequencies where noise reduction is seen, thus weakening the radiatively efficient axisymmetric mode. Finally, sound-producing intermittent events in the jet are significantly reduced, thereby minimizing the high-intensity acoustic emissions. This small-perturbation-based control strategy results in only minor variations in the mean flow properties. Subsonic jet nozzles, commonly used in passenger aircrafts, generate significant noise that travels both downstream and upstream due to large-scale or fine-scale turbulence in the jet plume. To reduce jet noise, a novel wall treatment method, termed the wavy inner wall (WIW), is proposed. With this method, the smooth inner wall near the exit of the nozzle is replaced by treated walls that carry small wavy patterns. Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of the WIW treatment. Large eddy simulations (LES) were used to predict the unsteady flow field and the far-field noise, followed by the analogy method proposed by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings. To better understand the mechanism behind the noise reduction achieved by the WIW treatment, the shear-layer instability, radial and azimuthal auto-correlation functions, turbulent kinetic energy, and acoustic source term from the Tam-Auriault (TA) jet-noise model were analyzed. Results indicated that the WIW treatment advances the onset of jet flow instability in the shear-layer, leading to the early breakdown of jet shear-layer and production of different scales of downstream turbulent structures. As a result, the distribution and production of turbulent kinetic energy are affected, and the generation and emission of jet noise are controlled. The WIW treatment enables the control of fine scale turbulence, resulting in the reduction of mid- to high-frequency noise in the far field, while ensuring a low thrust loss. The aerodynamic noise of an aircraft leads to vibration fatigue damage to structures. Herein, a prediction method for aircraft surface noise under the comprehensive effect of mixed acoustic sources during flight, primarily surface aerodynamic, air intake, and tail nozzle jet noises, was studied. In the supersonic cruising state, the internal and external flow fields of the aircraft were solved using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations to obtain the statistical average solution of the initial turbulence. The non-linear disturbance equation was used to obtain the surface acoustic load of the aircraft. The calculation results revealed that the main source of aircraft surface noise is aerodynamic noise. The sound pressure level on the fuselage increases gradually from front to rear along the aircraft, and the OASPL at the air intake and tail nozzle is relatively large. The jet noise has little effect on the sound pressure level at the front of the fuselage and only contributes to the OASPL at the tail nozzle of the fuselage. The intensity of pressure pulsations from the engine exhaust in the tail section is 93.3% of the total intensity of pressure pulsations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The importance of jet noise for prospective supersonic transport (SST) in takeoff and climb modes dictates the need to develop methods for reducing jet noise and their subsequent validation in large- and full-scale tests. This paper presents the results of Russia's first ground acoustic tests of a rectangular nozzle with a noise suppression system, installed on a subsonic aircraft engine to demonstrate the technology. The authors studied a rectangular beveled nozzle with an ejector and screens—elements of the SST airframe. The test results were compared for three nozzle geometries: a round nozzle corresponding to measurements for the original engine without modifications, a rectangular nozzle without screens, and a rectangular nozzle with screens. It was found that when the rectangular nozzle without screens is used, there two opposite effects occur: noise amplification compared to the round nozzle for angles of observation close to the jet axis, and noise attenuation at angles of observation close to the fan rotation plane. Installing screens increases noise up to 5 dB in the low-frequency region below 150 Hz and reduces noise by 2 dB for frequencies higher than 250 Hz. Estimation of community noise in the EPNL metric showed that this rectangular nozzle with the noise suppression system has the effect of reducing community noise in comparison with the baseline round nozzle. This work deals with the investigation and modelling of wall pressure fluctuations induced by a supersonic jet over a tangential flat plate. The analysis is performed at several nozzle pressure ratios around the nozzle design Mach number, including slightly over-expanded and under-expanded conditions, and for different radial positions of the rigid plate. Pitot measurements and flow visualizations through the background oriented schlieren technique provided a general overview of the aerodynamic interactions between the jet flow and the plate at the different regimes and configurations. Wall pressure fluctuations were measured using a couple of piezoelectric pressure transducers flush mounted over the plate surface. The spectral analysis has been carried out to clarify the effect of the plate position on the single and multivariate wall pressure statistics, including the screech tone amplitude. The experimental dataset is used to assess and validate a surrogate model based on artificial neural networks. Sound pressure levels and coherence functions are modelled by means of a single fully connected network, built on the basis of a recently implemented fully deterministic topology optimization algorithm. The metamodel uncertainty is also quantified using the spatial correlation function. It is shown that the flow behaviour as well as the screech and broadband noise signatures are significantly influenced by the presence of the plate, and the effects on spectral quantities are correctly reproduced by the proposed data-driven model that provides predictions in agreement with the available data.
