A new method is presented to determine the gluon density in the proton from jet production in deeply inelastic scattering. By using the technique of Mellin transforms not only for the solution of the scale evolution equation of the parton densities but also for the evaluation of scattering cross sections, the gluon density can be extracted in next-to-leading order QCD. The method described in this paper is, however, more general, and can be used in situations where a repeated fast numerical evaluation of scattering cross sections for varying parton distribution functions is required., 13 pages (LaTeX); 2 figures are included via epsfig; the corresponding postscript files are uuencoded

24 pp. (1995)., Inclusive jet cross sections for events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction from the reaction ep → jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector. The cross sections refer to jets with transverse energies E T jet > 8 GeV. The data show the characteristics of a diffractive process mediated by pomeron exchange. Assuming that the events are due to the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure, the quark and gluon content of the pomeron is probed at a scale ∼ ( E T jet ) 2 . A comparison of the measurements with model predictions based on QCD plus Regge phenomenology requires a contribution of partons with a hard momentum density in the pomeron. A combined analysis of the jet cross sections and recent ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function in deep inelastic scattering gives the first experimental evidence for the gluon content of the pomeron in diffractive hard scattering processes. The data indicate that between 30% and 80% of the momentum of the pomeron carried by partons is due to hard gluons.

16 pp. (1995)., Jet production in deep inelastic scattering for 120 < Q 2 < 3600 GeV 2 has been studied using data from an integrated luminosity of 3.2 pb −1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified with the JADE algorithm. A cut on the angular distribution of parton emission in the γ ∗ - parton centre-of-mass system minimises the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the jet rates. The jet rates, when compared to O ( α s 2 ) perturbative QCD calculations, allow a precise determination of α s ( Q ) in three Q 2 -intervals. The values are consistent with a running of ifα s ( Q ), as expected from QCD. Extrapolating to Q = M Z 0 α s ( M Z 0 ) = 0.117 ± 0.005 (stat) −0.005 +0.004 (syst exp ) ± 0.007 (syst theory ).

Three commonly used jet algorithms and two new ones have been studied with respect to their performance in the new experimental situation of deep-inelastic scattering at the HERA electron-proton collider. Their ability to reconstruct properties of the underlying parton level subprocesses was investigated. This relates to first order QCD matrix elements and higher order parton emissions as described by parton showers. A new method was devised to determine suitable values for the resolution parameters of the algorithms and assess their reconstruction quality. The Jade algorithm, which is frequently used ine+e−-annihilation, is found to perform less well compared to other algorithms.

26 pp. (1994)., The deep inelastic scattering 2+1 jet cross- section is a useful observable for precision tests of QCD, e.g. measuring the strong coupling constant alpha(s). A consistent analysis requires a good understanding of the theoretical uncertainties and one of the most fundamental ones in QCD is due to the renormalization scheme and scale ambiguity. Different methods, which have been proposed to resolve the scale ambiguity, are applied to the 2+1 jet cross-section and the uncertainty is estimated. It is shown that the uncertainty can be made smaller by choosing the jet definition in a suitable way.

123 pp. (1994)., In this thesis the first analysis of multi-jet production with the Hl detector at HERA is presented. The studies are based on data taken in 1992. The integrated luminosity was $22.5 nb^{-1}$. The structure of multi jet events are explored und compared to Monte Carlo models. Jet rates for momentum transfers squared up to $500 GeV^2$ are determind using the JADE clustering algorithm. Sytematical effects are investigated. Within the statistical and systematical errors the jet rates are found to be in agreement with the predictions from QCD based models.

This paper presents energy distributions of the hadronic system produced in neutral-current electron-proton deep-inelastic scattering at a centre of mass energy of 296 GeV. Comparison of the results with QCD Monte Carlo models shows that QCD radiation has a strong influence on the characteristics of the final state. The data are reasonably reproduced by the Lund model based on a matrix element calculation in first order ofα s , followed by appropriate parton showers, as well as by the colour dipole model. The HERWIG parton shower model also gives a reasonable representation of the data. Neither the first order matrix elements alone nor the Lund parton shower model, without the matrix element calculation, reproduce the data.

15 pp. (1993)., A sample of events with two distinct jets, in addition to the proton remnant, has been identified in deep inelastic, neutral current ep interactions recorded at HERA by the ZEUS experiment. For these events, the mass of the hadronic system ranges from 40 to 260 GeV. The salient features of the observed jet production agree with the predictions of higher order QCD.

20 pp. (1993)., We comment on the numerical calculation of the Lipatov pomeron in the measurement of “hot spots” in deep inelastic scattering. We illustrate that previous analytic estimates based upon the leading term in the Lipatov equation are accurate within 20%. We present evidence that numerical calculations should be done with a fixed αs. The use of a running $α_s$ appears as an unnecessary complication. We argue that at low Q2 the BFKL pomeron requires higher-order corrections.

10 pp. (1993)., A new jet clustering algorithm-Arclus-is presented. The main difference between this and conventional algorithms is that while the latter in each step join two clusters into one,Arclus joins three clusters into two. The performance ofArclus in terms of the size of hadronization corrections is studied for some jet-reconstruction tasks ine+e− andep collisions, and is found to be as good as or, for some tasks inep collisions, better than conventional clustering algorithms.

24 pp. (1991)., We have measured the cross section and $Q^2$-dependence of the reaction γγ→ multihadrons, using the CELLO detector at DESY, for visible final-state masses between 4 and 9 GeV. The data are well fitted by an incoherent sum of Generalised Vector Meson Dominance and Quark Parton Model terms, but at lowQ2 require the addition of a third component which resembles the QPM but is less two-jet-like. With and without this term, the GVDM cross section atQ2=0 is found to be 200±20 and 250±25 nb, respectively.

23 pp. (1991)., Higher order electromagnetic radiative corrections to neutral current deep inelastic electron proton scattering are studied in collinear approximation. Second order corrections show qualitatively new features compared to the first order ones and are non-negligible for largey and smallx. We also show how kinematical cuts on the recoil quark jet, in particular the jet angle, will allow a strong reduction of the contribution from radiative events for smallx and largey.

This paper reports the results of a study of hadron production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at c.m. energies of 33, 35, and 35.8 GeV. Production of a new quark flavor has been sought. The measured values of the total cross section, the thrust distributions, and the study of inclusive muon production show no evidence for the production of a new charge-2/3e quark near threshold. In addition, during an energy scan in the region 29.9< or =..sqrt..s< or =31.6 GeV, no hadron resonance indicating the existence of a bound state composed of charge-2/3e quarks has been found.

(1983). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.51.443, The results of a high-statistics study of inclusive muon spectra at PETRA are reported. Improved mass limits have been obtained for heavy quarks, heavy leptons, and charged Higgs particles. It is shown that the fragmentation properties of b quarks and c quarks are different, with the mean fragmentation variables 〈zb〉=0.75±0.03±0.06, 〈zc〉=0.46±0.02±0.05 and the average semileptonic branching ratio for the B and C hadrons R(B)=(10.5±1.5±1.3)%, R(C)=(11.5±1.0±1.7)%.

61 pp. (1988)., The measurements on properties of jets produced in $e^+e^−$ collisions are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the experimental information obtained on the space time development of jets and the evidence on coherent gluon emission. The recently published data on jets originating from a special kind of parton are summarized. The extraction of the properties of the original parton from jets is discussed.

Results onK0 and Λ production ine+e− annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and Λ differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of π±,K± and\(p(\bar p)\). Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh=σ(e+e-→hX)/σµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 Λ per event. We have searched for possible Λ polarization. The production ofK0's and Λ's in jets is examined as a function ofpT2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons\((\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,por\bar p)\) observed.

10 pp. (1979)., Results on the hadronic final state in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 13, 17 and 27.4 GeV are presented. There is no compelling evidence for the existence of the t quark in these data, which are in general agreement with a simple quark parton model. Some tentative indications of QCD effects are observed in the p/sub T//sup 2/ distributions.

(1980). doi:10.1007/BF01588839, We discuss the angular asymmetries of 3-jet events ine+e− annihilation, originating from hard gluon bremsstrahlung off quarks. Lepton beam polarization helps to disentangle the various helicity components of the bremsstrahlung cross section. They are sensitive to the spin of the radiated quantum but are otherwise parameter-free.

26 pp. (1982)., Calculates the unpolarised, the longitudinal polarised and other polarisation-dependent cross sections for jet production in deep inelastic eN scattering up to order alpha s of the quark-gluon coupling and for finite transverse momentum of the initial partons. The primordial transverse momentum leads to additional structure which can be used to test the lowest-order QCD jet production matrix element.

155841 (1980)., The analysis of two photon physics at the e+e− storage ring PETRA is reviewed. Higher order QED processes e+e−→e+e−e+e−(e+e−μ+μ−) have been measured in good agreement with the QED calculations. The production of the f0 resonance has been invstigated and the radiative width has been determined. The total cross section σ(Q2,W) of the inelastic electron photon scattering has been studied in some detail. Evidence for the production of large PT jets in the reaction γγ→qq̄ is reported and a first measurement of the photon structure function in deep inelastic eγ scattering is discussed.

(1981). doi:10.1007/BF01548768, For four-jet events in electron-positron annihilation at center-of-mass energies of 30 GeV or higher, a simple procedure is described to determine all four jet axes and jet energies. The result is insensitive to missing particles such as neutrals and the required computer time is quite moderate.

We report the analysis of the spatial energy distribution of data for e+e−→hadrons obtained with the MARK-J detector at PETRA. We define the quantity 'oblateness' to describe the flat shape of the energy configuration and the three-jet structure which is unambiguously observed for the first time. Our data can be explained by quantum chromodynamic predictions for the production of quark-antiquark pairs accompanied by hard noncollinear gluons.
