To reduce the negative effects of climate change and global warming, both water and energy resources are needed as alternatives besides traditional resources. Geothermal water, one of the first to come to mind as an alternative energy source, is used for electricity generation, heating and thermal health tourism. In addition to these uses, the possibility of using geothermal water as irrigation water may present an alternative approach to the problem of water scarcity. However, some components found in geothermal water do not allow direct evaluation. Therefore, geothermal water may need to undergo some treatment before use. In this study, reclamation of geothermal water by integrated membrane and ion exchange processes was aimed for removal of boron and arsenic from geothermal water by employing novel chelating resins. Another aim of this study is to obtain energy by reverse electrodialysis (RED) method from concentrate stream which is obtained by treatment of geothermal water using reverse osmosis (RO) method. In the first part of the study; novel gel like chelating ion exchange resins containing NMDG groups were used for the removal of boron and arsenic from geothermal water, its reverse osmosis permeate and concentrate. The performances of these resins were investigated by applying batch and continuous methods in laboratory studies. The second part of the study is to generate power via reverse electrodialysis method based on the salinity gradient. For this purpose, different ion exchange membranes were used in the studies. In the studies, the number of membrane pairs, the salinity difference and the flow rates of the feed solutions were investigated., İklim değişimi ve küresel ısınmanın olumsuz etkilerini azaltmak için geleneksel kaynakların yanı sıra alternatif olarak su ve enerji kaynaklarına ihtiyaç vardır. Alternatif enerji kaynağı olarak ilk akla gelenlerden biri olan jeotermal su, elektrik üretimi, ısınma ve termal sağlık turizmi için kullanılmaktadır. Bu kullanımlara ek olarak, jeotermal suların sulama suyu olarak kullanılabilmesi su kıtlığı sorununa alternatif bir yaklaşım sunabilir. Ancak jeotermal suların içinde bulunan bazı elementler bu suların doğrudan kullanılmasına imkan vermemektedir. Bu nedenle jeotermal suların kullanım öncesinde bazı işlemlerden geçmesi gerekebilir. Bu çalışmada, yenilikçi şelatlayıcı iyon değiştirici reçineler kullanılarak jeotermal suların bütünleşik membran ve iyon değişim süreçleriyle ıslahı ile bor ve arseniğin jeotermal sudan uzaklaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın diğer bir hedefi ise, jeotermal suyun ters osmoz (TO) yöntemi ile arıtılmasıyla elde edilen konsantre bileşenden akımdan ters elektrodiyaliz (TED) yöntemi ile enerji elde etmektir. Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde; bor ve arseniğin jeotermal su, jeotermal suyun ters ozmoz süzüntüsü ve konsantresinden giderilmesi için, NMDG gruplarını içeren yeni şelatlayıcı iyon değiştirici reçineler kullanılmıştır. Laboratuvar çalışmalarında kesikli ve sürekli adsorpsiyon yöntemleri uygulanarak bu reçinelerin bot ve arsenik giderim performansları araştırılmıştır. Çalışmanın ikinci kısmı ise, tuzluluk farkına dayalı olarak ters elektrodiyaliz yöntemi ile güç üretilmesidir. Bu tez çalışmasının diğer amacı da tuzluluk farkına dayalı olarak ters elektrodiyaliz yöntemi kullanılarak güç üretimidir. Bu amaçla, farklı iyon değiştirici membranlar kullanılmıştır. Yapılan çalışmalarda membran çiftlerinin sayısı, besleme çözeltilerinin tuzluluk farkı ve besleme çözeltilerinin akış hızların etkisi incelenmiştir.

Bu çalışma, İzmir’in Narlıdere ilçesinde bulunan İzmir Jeotermal Enerji A,Ş’ye ait Yenikale Jeotermal Isı Merkezi sahasında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yürütülen çalışmalarda ısı merkezinin reenjeksiyon hattından alınan jeotermal reenjeksiyon suyu burada kurulu olan mini pilot ölçekli membran test sistemi aracılığıyla arıtılmıştır. Membran arıtımında NF ve RO membranları kullanılarak membran türünün ürün suyu geri kazanımına ve kalitesine olan etkisi araştırılmıştır. Mini pilot ölçekli membran test sistemine giren besleme suyu, konsantre ve süzüntü suyu olarak ayrılacağı için farklı karakterizasyona sahip olan bu suların yönetimi çevresel açıdan önemlidir. Elde edilen süzüntü suyu kalitesi sulama kriterleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Öte yandan, konsantre atık su farklı oranlarda besleme tankına geri beslenerek yarı kapalı döngü ile konsantre yönetimi üzerine çalışmalar gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın ilk aşamasında farklı TR-NE90-NF ve BW30-RO membranları kullanılarak arıtılan jeotermal su ile elde edilen ürün suyu kalitesi farklı analitik yöntemler kullanılarak incelenmiş olup, süzüntü suyu kalitesi tarımsal sulama kullanımı açısından (elektriksel iletkenlik, SAR, bor derişimi vb.) değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın ikinci aşamasında TR-NE90-NF ve BW30-RO membranlarının performansları konsantre atık minimizasyonu açısından ayrı ayrı incelenerek elde edilen süzüntü sularının kalitesi karşılaştırılmıştır. Arıtım sonucu oluşan atık konsantre suyun belirli bir kısmı geri besleme yapılarak en aza indirilebileceği görülmüştür. Öte yandan, tüm konsantre besleme akışına beslendiğinde besleme suyunun EC'sinin artmasıyla birlikte, yüksek oranlarda yapılan geri beslemenin ürün su kalitesini hatta membran ömrünü etkileyeceği sonucuna varılmıştır. Bu çalışmadan elde edilen su aynı zamanda tarımsal sulamada da kullanılabilir. Ancak SAR ve bor değerlerinde bazı ayarlamaların sulama öncesinde yapılması gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada basınç itici gücüyle çalıştırılan membran desalinasyon işlemlerinde konsantre akışın belirli bir bölümünün geri besleme yapılarak konsantre atık probleminin bir dereceye kadar en aza indirilebileceği açıkça görülmüştür., This study was carried out in the Yenikale Geothermal Heating Center belonging to İzmir Geothermal Energy Inc. in Narlıdere, İzmir. Geothermal re-injection water taken from the re-injection line of the heating center was treated by a mini-pilot scale membrane test system installed there. The effect of membrane type on product water recovery and quality was investigated by using NF and RO membranes in membrane treatment. Since the feed water supplied to the mini-pilot membrane test system will be separated as concentrate and permeate water, management of these waters which have different characteristics, is environmentally important. While obtained permeate water quality was checked in terms of irrigation water standards, concentrate water was fed back to the feed tank at different rates and studies were carried out on concentrate management with a semi-closed loop. Firstly, the product water quality obtained from geothermal water treated by different TR-NE90-NF and BW30-RO membranes was examined using different analytical methods and the permeate water quality was evaluated in terms of agricultural irrigation water standards (electrical conductivity, SAR, boron concentration, etc.). The second step of this study, the performances of the TR-NE90-NF and BW30-RO membranes were examined separately in terms of concentrate waste minimization and the qualities of the permeate water were compared. As a result of this, it has been observed that a certain part of the concentrate water can be minimized by recycling. On the other hand, it was concluded that using large amounts of concentrate in feed will affect product water quality badly and even membrane life since EC of the feed water will increase when all concentrate is fed into the feed stream. The water obtained from this study can also be used for agricultural irrigation. However, SAR and boron values need to adjustments before using this water for irrigation. With this study, it has been clearly seen that the problem of concentrate waste can be minimized to some extent by circulating a certain part of the concentrate flow into feed during membrane desalination processes by pressure driven membranes.

In this study, we assessed the usability of spent geothermal water for agricultural irrigation after membrane treatment. Preliminary membrane tests were conducted on a laboratory-scale set up followed by mini-pilot scale tests in a geothermal heating center. Commercially available membranes (XLE BWRO, NF90, and Osmonics CK- NF) were tested using a cross-flow flat-sheet membrane testing unit (Sepa CF II, GE-Osmonics) under constant applied pressure of 20 bar. Then, different spiral wound membranes (TR-NE90-NF, TR-BE-BW, and BW30) were employed for the mini-pilot scale studies to treat store spent geothermal water and the system was operated in a continuous mode. Water recovery and applied pressure were maintained constant at 60% and 12 bar, respectively. In laboratory tests, the permeate fluxes were measured as 94.3, 87.9, and 64.3 L m−2 h−1 for XLE BWRO, CK-NF and NF90 membranes, respectively. The arsenic removals were found as 99.0%, 87.5% and 83.6% while the boron removals were 56.8%, 54.2%, and 26.1% for XLE BWRO, NF90 and CK-NF membranes, respectively. In field tests, permeate fluxes were 49.9, 26.8 and 24.0 L m−2 h−1 for TR-NF, BW30-RO and TR-BE-BW membranes, respectively. Boron removals were calculated as 49.9%, 44.1% and 40.7% for TR-BE-BW, TR-NE90-NF, and BW30-RO membranes, respectively. Removal efficiencies of arsenic in mini-pilot scale membrane tests were all over 90%. Then, the spent geothermal taken directly from reinjection stream was treated. Firstly, individual performances of different commercially available nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes attached to a mini-pilot membrane test system were studied. For the single membrane tests, TR-NF and NF90 as NF membranes and TR-BWRO, Vontrone, TR-SWRO and BW30 as RO membranes were employed while combination of TR-NF with TR-BWRO, Vontrone, TR-SWRO and BW30 was employed in the integrated study (with and without pH adjustment). In terms of boron removals, boron was partially removed in single membrane study as 22.7–23.6% and 30.6–56.8% by NF and RO membranes, respectively. For the integrated NF + RO membrane configuration (without pH adjustment), boron removals were in the range of 42.1–59.4% while 91.3–95.4% of boron removal was obtained in the integrated NF + RO (at elevated pH). Concentrate stream produced during water treatment by pressure driven membrane processes remain the major drawback for this technology. The membranes employed for concentrate management studies were TR-NF and BW30-RO membranes. First, studies with different concentrate to feed ratios as NF-F2, NF-F3, NF-F4 and NF-F5 (1:4, 1:3, 1:2 and 2:3) were investigated using TR-NF membrane. A control study with no concentrate recirculation was conducted as well in order to check the effect of concentrate recirculation on the membrane performance. Then, studies with BW30-RO membrane using same concentrate to feed ratios as in the case of NF membrane studies were carried out. An applied pressure of 15 bar, initial water recovery of 60% and 4 h of experimental time were employed as operational conditions for both NF and RO membrane studies. Flux values obtained were 28.62, 28.80, 28.76, 28.72 and 23.04 Lm-2h-1 for NF-F2, NF-F3, NF-F4 and NF-F5 while 32.31, 31.85, 28.62 and 27.69 Lm-2h-1 for RO-F1, RO-F2, RO-F3, RO-F4 and RO-F5, respectively. The quality of irrigation water is critical to enhancing agricultural productivity. As a result, this research was carried out with the aim of treating spent geothermal water based on Turkish Ministry of Forestry and Urbanization (TR-MEU). While doing that, cost analysis of the system was taken into consideration as well. The product water was targeted to suit irrigation water standards for tomato plants. According to TR-MEU irrigation water standards, the results obtained from this study it was clearly seen that, both NF and RO product waters meet the quality I irrigation water standards with respect total dissolved substances (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), Na+ and Cl-. Quality 1 means, the produced water will not cause any environmental effect when employed for irrigation purpose. Nevertheless, produced water was found not to complied with irrigation standards with respect to sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and boron (quality III category). Quality III means, the water will cause soil infiltration problems when employed for irrigation purpose. Quality II of TR-MEU standard was targeted for the irrigation of tomato in the field study. Two commercially available pressure-driven membranes (NF8040-70 as NF and TM720D-400 as RO) installed in a pilot-membrane treatment system were employed for the production of tomato irrigation water. A constant applied pressure of 15 bar and 60% water recovery were kept constant during the product water production while mode of operation of the membrane system was continuous mode. A mixing using 50 or 60% of well water with the product water of NF (50%) and RO (40%) was found to be the optimum ratios to produce the requested tomato irrigation water quality. Quality II (can be applied with caution) of irrigation water was targeted in terms of SAR as well as boron concentration (2-4 and 4-6 mg/L) while determining the mixing ratios. The cost of the product water was found as 0.76 and 1.56 $/m3 for NF and RO processes, respectively. For the membrane fouling test, BW30-RO membrane was employed. Six cycle experiments including rinsing with RO permeate following RO treatment, chemical cleaning, rinsing with RO permeate were conducted with spent geothermal water. A chemical cleaning with citric acid solution was employed for the fouled membranes. Nevertheless, flux recovery was found to be low with values of 2.98, 5.31, 1.27, 0.68, 4.98 and 4.28% for cycles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively. In the solar energy powered membrane tests study, mini-pilot scale desalination system employed for the treatment of waste geothermal water. Solar-powered desalination membrane system was operated at 15 bar of applied pressure, 4 h experimental time, and 60% of water recovery. The system was monitored for a period of 12 months, and the efficiency of the solar energy, as well as desalinated water quality, was evaluated. The maximum energy produced by the solar system was 2603 W, while the energy consumption of the desalination system was calculated as 1456 W. Quality of the permeate water produced was accessed according to Turkish Ministry of Forestry and Urbanization (TR-MEU) irrigation water standards., Bu çalışmada, jeotermal ısı merkezinde ısıtma amaçlı kullanım sonrasında elde edilen kullanılmış jeotermal suyun membran arıtımından sonra tarımsal sulamada kullanılabilirliği değerlendirilmiştir. Bu amaçla yapılan ilk aşama çalışmalarda ticari olarak temin edilebilen üç farklı ters osmoz ve nanofiltrasyon membranı (XLE BWRO, NF90 ve Osmonics CK-NF), 20 bar'lık sabit uygulama basıncı altında çapraz akışlı düz tabaka membran test ünitesi (Sepa CF II, GE-Osmonics) kullanılarak test edilmiştir. Bir sonradaki çalışma, İzmir Jeotermal A.Ş.‘nin Yeni Kale Jeotermal Isı Merkezi sahasında kurulmuş olan mini-pilot ölçekli membran test sistemi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu amaçla farklı tipte spiral sarım nanofiltrasyon ve ters osmoz membranları (TR-NE90-NF, TR-BE-BW, BW30 ve Vontrone) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmalarda uygulanan su geri kazanımı ve uygulama basıncı sırasıyla %60 ve 12 bar olacak şekilde sabit tutulmuştur. Gerçekleştirilen laboratuvar testlerinde XLE BWRO, CK-NF ve NF90 membranları için süzüntü akıları sırasıyla 94.3, 87.9 ve 64.3 L m-2h-1 olarakölçülmüştür. XLE BWRO, NF90 ve CK-NF membranları için arsenik giderimi sırasıyla %99.0, %87.5 ve %83.6 iken, bu membranların bor giderimleri ise sırasıyla %56.8, %54.2 ve %26.1 olarak bulunmuştur. Saha testlerinde TR-NF, BW30, Vontrone ve TR-BE-BW membranları kullanılarak elde edilen süzüntü akıları sırasıyla 49.92, 27.70, 25.29 ve 23.04 Lm-2h-1‘dir. Jeotermal sudan bor giderimleri TR-BE-BW, TR-NE90-NF, BW30-RO ve Vontrone membranları için sırasıyla %49.9, %44.1, %40.7 ve %39.7 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Mini pilot ölçekli membran testlerinde kullanılan tüm membranlar ile jeotermal sudan arsenik %91'in üzerinde bir giderim ile uzaklaştırılabilmiştir. Re-enjeksiyon hattından doğrudan alınan jeotermal su kullanılarak mini-pilot membran test sisteminde tekli, bütünleşik membran ayrıca atık jeotermal sudan bor giderimine pH‘ın etkisi araştırılmıştır. Çalışmalarda farklı tipte spiral sarım nanofiltrasyon ve ters osmoz membranları (TR-NE90-NF, TR-BE-BW, BW30 ve Vontrone) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmalarda uygulanan su geri kazanımı ve uygulama basıncı sırasıyla %60 ve 15 bar olacak şekilde sabit tutulmuştur. İlk çalışmalar jeotermal suyun pH‘ında tekli membran çalışmaları olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. İkinci çalışmada, NF (TR-NF) membranının her bir RO (TR-BWRO, Vontrone, TR-SWRO ve BW30) membranı ile entegrasyonları ya da RO (TR-BWRO) ile RO (TR-BWRO, Vontrone ve BW30) entegrasyonu pH ayarı olmaksızın gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bütünleşik membran çalışmalarının ikinci aşaması için, RO membran çalışmasından (ikinci geçiş) önce ilk olarak sürekli modda (ilk geçiş olarak) NF/RO süzüntüsü toplanırken, ikinci geçiş için sistem kapalı döngüde çalıştırılmıştır. Bütünleşik çalışmaların ilk aşamasında 15 barlık uygulama basıncı, %60 su geri kazanımı ve 4 saatlik deney süresi, RO çalışmasından önce her iki NF/RO süzüntü toplama çalışmaları için sabit tutulmuştur. İkinci aşama RO çalışmasında ise NF+RO entegrasyonu için 15 bar, RO+RO entegrasyonu için ise 10 bar basınç uygulanmıştır. Üçüncü çalışmada ise, NF (TR-NF) membranının her bir RO (TR-BWRO, Vontrone, TR-SWRO ve BW30) membranı ile entegrasyonları ikinci RO geçişinde besleme suyunun pH‘ı 10,5‘e ayarlanarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. pH'ın 10,5'e ayarlanması dışında, tüm deneysel koşullar, pH ayarlaması olmadan yapılan bütünleşik NF+RO çalışmalarında olduğu gibi sabit tutulmuştur. Çalışmada yüksek pH'da ikinci geçiş için, 10 ve 15 bar'lık bir basınç uygulanmıştır. Tek tek membranların performansları incelendiğinde, tüm çalışmalarda deneysel çalışma süresi boyunca (4 saat) süzüntü akısında önemli bir azalma olmadığı görülmüştür. Bor giderimleri açısından, tek membranla yapılan çalışmalarda bor giderimi NF ve RO membranları ile sırasıyla %22,7-23,6 ve %30,6-56,8 düzeyinde kısmen gerçekleşmiştir. Bütünleşik NF+RO membran konfigürasyonu için (pH ayarlaması olmadan) bor giderimi %42,1-59,4 aralığında iken, ikinci aşamada pH‘ın 10,5‘e ayarlandığı bütünleşik NF+RO çalışmasında bor giderimi %91,3-%95,4 olarak elde edilmiştir. Jeotermal su arıtımında meydana gelen konsantre akışın, çevresel problemlere sebep olmaması amacıyla konsantre, sisteme geri beslenerek konsantre atık minimizasyonu gerçekleştirilmiştir. Konsantrenin minimizasyonunda, TR-NE90-NF membranı ile elde edilen konsantre, farklı oranlarda (1:4, 1:3, 1:2 ve 2:3) besleme suyu ile karıştırılarak besleme tankına geri beslenmiştir. Bu karışımlar, geri besleme olmaksızın gerçekleştirilen kontrol çalışmasıyla kıyaslanmış olup, konsantre çevriminin membran performansına etkisi araştırılmıştır. Daha sonra aynı konsantre/besleme oranları kullanılarak BW30-RO membranı ile benzer çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, 1:4, 1:3, 1:2 ve 2:3 geri besleme oranına sahip konsantre çalışmalar için hesaplanan ortalama akı değerleri sırasıyla 30.29, 28.80, 25.92 Lm-2h-1‘dir. Benzer şekilde BW30-RO membranınaait geri beslemesiz pilot çalışma ile 1:4, 1:3, 1:2 ve 2:3 geri besleme oranına sahip çalışmalar için hesaplanan ortalama akı değerleri ise sırasıyla 32.77, 31.85, 27.69 Lm-2h-1‘dir. Yeni Kale Jeotermal Isı Merkezi bahçesinde domates yetiştirmek için sulama suyu üretiminde kullanılan büyük pilot ölçek membran arıtma sisteminde takılı olan NF ve RO membranlarının performans değerlendirmeside yapılmış olup, bu çalışma re-enjeksiyon hattından alınan atık jeotermal su büyük pilot ölçek membran arıtma sisteminde arıtılarak geçlekleştirilmiştir. Sulama suyu kalitesi, tarımsal verimliliği artırmak için oldukça önemlidir. Bu araştırma ile tarımsal sulamada kullanmak amacıyla jeotermal suyun arıtılması hedeflenmiştir. Buna bağlı olarak çalışmalarda elde edilen sonuçlar T.C Çevre, Şehircilik ve İklim Değişikliği Bakanlığı‘nın sulama suyu standartlarına göre değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, hem NF hem de RO ürün sularının toplam çözünmüş madde (TDS) açısından Sınıf I sulama suyu standartlarını karşıladığı açıkça görülmüştür. Öte yandan, elektriksel iletkenlik (EC), Na+ ve Cl- değerlerinin de Sınıf I kalite değerlerini karşıladığı görülmüştür. Bu durumda, ürün suyu sulama amacıyla kullanıldığında herhangi bir çevresel etkiye neden olmayacağı anlaşılmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra ele geçen süzüntü suyunun sodyum adsorpsiyon oranı (SAR) ve bor açısından Sınıf II sulama suyu kalitesinde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bitki büyümesi için ihtiyaç duyulan minerallerin çoğu NF ve RO membranları tarafından giderildiğinden ürün suyu, kuyu suyu ile (remineralizasyon için) belirlenen oranlarda karıştırılmıştır. NF (%50) ve RO (%40) membranlarının ürün suyu, %50 veya %60 oranında kuyu suyu ile karıştırılarak istenen domates sulama suyu kalitesini elde etmek için optimum oranlar bulunmuştur. Karıştırma oranları belirlenirken sulama suyunun, SAR ve bor derişimi (2-4 ve 4-6 mg/L) açısından II. Sınıf olması (dikkatle uygulanabilir) hedeflenmiştir. Bu çalışma boyunca sistemin maliyet analizi de göz önüne alınmıştır. Ürün suyunun maliyeti NF ve RO prosesleri için sırasıyla 0.76 ve 1.56$/m3 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Ayrıca membran tıkanmasının tespitine ilişkin BW30-RO membranı kullanılarak bazı testleri yapılmıştır. Bu testler 6 farklı döngü şeklinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmalar sonunda döngü sayısı arttıkça membran geçirgenliğinin azaldığı tespit edilmiştir. Kirlenen membranların temizliği sitrik asit ile yapılmıştır. Döngüler 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ve 6 olmak üzere akı geri kazanımları sırasıyla %2.98, 5.31, 1.27, 0.68, 4.98 ve %4.28 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Güneş enerjisiyle çalışan membranların test çalışmasında, atık jeotermal suyun arıtılması için mini pilot ölçekli desalinasyon sistemi kullanılmıştır. Güneş enerjili desalinasyon membran sistemi 15 bar uygulama basıncı, 4 saatlik deney süresi ve %60 su geri kazanımında çalıştırılmıştır. Sistem 12 aylık süre boyunca izlenerek güneş enerjisinin verimliliği ve tuzdan arındırılmış su kalitesi değerlendirilmiştir. Güneş sisteminin ürettiği maksimum enerji 2603 W, desalinasyon sisteminin enerji tüketimi ise 1456 W olarak hesaplanmıştır.

Dünyanın artan enerji ihtiyacı göz önünde bulundurulduğunda jeotermal enerji, en istikrarlı ve yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarından biri olması nedeniyle cazip bir alternatif haline gelmektedir. Özellikle, su kıtlığı bulunan bazı bölgelerde, jeotermal sular, hem içme suyu kaynakları hem de sanayi ve tarım için değerli su kaynakları olarak kabul edilmektedir. Ancak yüzeye çıkan jeotermal sular mineral içeren kayaçlar ile temas eder ve bu nedenle jeotermal sularda yüksek miktarda bor ve arsenik bulunabilmektedir. Jeotermal sularda yüksek derişimlerde bulunabilen bor ve arseniğin varlığı, jeotermal suların sulama veya içme suyu olarak doğrudan kullanılmasını önlemekte; yeraltı sularında ve yüzey sularında kimyasal kirlilik ve çevresel sorunlara neden olabilmektedir. Bu nedenle borun ve arseniğin jeotermal sudan uzaklaştırılması önemli bir husustur. Bu çalışmada, TÜBİTAK-NCBR projesinde partner üniversite olan Wroclaw University of Technology'de sentezlenen N-metil-D-glukamin fonksiyonel gruplarını içeren "core-shell" tipi yenilikçi iyon değiştirici reçinelerin bor ve arsenik giderim kapasiteleri belirlenmiştir ve ticari iyon değiştirici reçineler de yenilikçi reçineler ile aynı koşullarda kullanılarak, performans karşılaştırması yapılmıştır. Kesikli ve sürekli adsorpsiyon deneyleri ile adsorpsiyon-membran hibrit çalışmaları laboratuvar ölçeğinde yürütülmüştür. Öncelikle adsorpsiyon çalışmaları için model çözeltiler hazırlanmış ve daha sonra yürütülen çalışmalar jeotermal su kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Jeotermal su örnekleri İzmir Jeotermal A.Ş.'nin Balçova'daki kuyularından temin edilmiştir. Çalışmalarda ayrıca jeotermal suyun ters osmoz süzüntüsü ve konsantresinden bor ve arsenik giderimi için laboratuvarımızda bulunan Sepa CF-II membran test sistemi kullanılarak jeotermal suyun ters osmoz konsantresi ve süzüntü örnekleri toplanmıştır. Ardından "core-shell" tipte iyon değiştirici malzemelerin ve ticari bor seçimli iyon değiştirici malzemelerin jeotermal suyun ters osmoz konsantresinden bor ve arsenik ve ters osmoz süzüntüsünden bor giderim kapasiteleri belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara bakıldığında, ticari bor seçimli iyon değiştirici reçine ile jeotermal sudaki sadece bor derişimi sulama suyu için izin verilen seviyenin (, Considering the increasing energy needs of the world, geothermal energy is becoming an attractive alternative because it is one of the most stable and renewable energy sources. Especially in some regions with water scarcity, geothermal waters are considered to be both potable and valuable water resources for industry and agriculture. However, geothermal waters that come to the surface come into contact with mineral-containing rocks, and therefore, high amounts of boron and arsenic can be found in geothermal waters. The presence of high concentrations of boron and arsenic in geothermal waters prevents the direct use of geothermal waters as irrigation or drinking water and it can cause chemical pollution and environmental problems in groundwater and surface waters. Therefore, the removal of boron and arsenic from geothermal water is an important issue. In this study, boron and arsenic removal capacity of innovative "core-shell" type ion exchange resins containing N-methyl-D-glucamine functional groups synthessized at Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland, our Project partner institution were determined. Commercial boron selective ion exchange resins were also used under the same conditions and a performance comparison was made between commercial and novel "core-shell" resins. Batch and continuous adsorption experiments along with adsorption-membrane hybrid studies were carried out on a laboratory scale. Firstly, model solutions were prepared for these studies and then further studies were carried out using geothermal water. Geothermal water samples were obtained from geothermal wells of Izmir Geothermal Energy Co. in Balcova. In addition, reverse osmosis concentrate and permeate samples of geothermal water were collected by using Sepa CF-II membrane test system in our laboratory for boron and arsenic removal from reverse osmosis concentrate and permeate of geothermal water. Then, the capacities of boron and arsenic removals of core-shell type ion exchange materials and commercial boron selective ion exchange resins from the reverse osmosis concentrate and permeate of geothermal water were determined. Looking at the data obtained, with commercial boron selective ion exchange resin, only the boron concentration in geothermal water was reduced below the permissible level for irrigation water (

A clean and sustainable energy source is necessary as an alternative to reduce the negative effect of greenhouse gases on climate change and global warming. In this sense, geothermal energy had a greater place as renewable energy source for keeping the earth clean for the new generations. One of the direct uses of geothermal energy is the geothermal fluids/waters for domestic, industrial, and commercial purposes. However, some toxic elements such as boron, arsenic and heavy metals can make a complex with the ions present in the underground waters by passing through soil. These complexes can be more toxic than elements presented as alone. Therefore, elimination of these substances from geothermal water have an important place from the environmental viewpoint. In this thesis, boron and arsenic removal from geothermal water obtained from the wells of İzmir-Balçova Geothermal Co. were carried out in adsorption-membrane filtration hybrid system by using the novel ion exchange resins (1JW, 2JW, 1PTN and 2PTN) synthesized in the laboratory of our project partner in Poland (Wroclaw University of Science and Technology). Boron and arsenic removal performances of novel ion exchange resins were compared with the that by commercially available boron and arsenic selective ion exchange resins (Dowex XUS 43594.00, Arsenxnp, Lewatit FO 36) and the effect of resin type and concentration on boron and arsenic removal were investigated. In second stage hybrid studies, reverse osmosis permeate of geothermal water (GW-ROP) was obtained by using Sepa CF-II membrane filtration test system in our laboratory. Adsorption-membrane filtration hybrid system was utilized to remove boron from GW-ROP solution. Moreover, reverse osmosis concentrate (GW-ROC-2 and GW-ROC-3) of the geothermal water obtained by pilot-scale reverse osmosis system installed at the Yenikale Heat Center were utilized in adsorption membrane filtration hybrid studies. For this purpose, novel boron selective and commercially available ion exchange resins were utilized in hybrid system to investigate arsenic and boron removal efficiencies. The obtained results showed that novel N-methyl-D-glucamine functionalized ion exchange resins are applicable to use in adsorption-membrane filtration hybrid process for boron and arsenic removal from geothermal water, reverse osmosis permeate and concentrate of geothermal water. These resins were able to decrease final boron concentration below to the permissible level (< 1.0 mg/L) and became comparable to commercially available boron and arsenic selective ion exchange resins. Considering the arsenic removal performances of these resins, it can be said that the final arsenic concentration in geothermal water could not be reduced below the permissible level; but their arsenic removal performances were enhanced for the reverse osmosis concentrate of geothermal water. In the third stage hybrid studies, laboratory scale bipolar membrane electrodialysis systems were operated to removal and recover boron and lithium from model solution. In bipolar membrane electrodialysis studies carried out by using two different electrodialysis systems, it was found that the acid and base solutions used in the acid and base compartments, the electrode solution used in the electrode compartment and the electrical potential affected boron and lithium separation and recovery from the model solution., Sera gazlarının iklim değişikliği ve küresel ısınma üzerindeki olumsuz etkisini azaltmak için alternatif olarak temiz ve sürdürülebilir bir enerji kaynağı gereklidir. Tez çalışması, jeotermal sulardaki lityumun kazanılması için laboratuvar ortamında adsorban üretilmesi ve üretilen adsorban yardımıyla lityum iyonunun adsorpsiyonunun gerçekleştirilmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmada kullanılan jeotermal su orta entalpili Ömer-Gecek (Afyonkarahisar) jeotermal bölgesinde AFJET A.Ş.’ne ait AF-25 sondaj kuyusundan temin edilmiştir. Lityum iyonuna duyarlı inorganik adsorbanın üretilebilmesi için MnCO3 ve LiOH ile bağlayıcı olarak sodyum silikat (cam suyu) kullanılmıştır. Li/Mn oranına sahip karışım 450 oC’de fırınlama işlemi sonrası değişik sodyum silikat bağlayıcısı kullanılarak hem mukavemet ve hem de adsorpsiyon performansı açısından en uygun bağlayıcı oranı belirlenmiştir. Li/Mn ve bağlayıcı malzemeden oluşan karışım şırınga vasıtasıyla 0.3x0.4cm boyutlarında şekillendirilerek, 105 oC sıcaklıkta etüvde kurutulmuş, 650 oC sıcaklıkta kül fırınında pişirilmiş ve HCl ile asit yıkama işlemleri yapılmıştır. Adsorbanın karakterizasyonu için yapılan x-ışını kırınımı (XRD) analizinde örneklerde spinel kristal yapısına sahip Li2MnO3 pikleri gözlenmiştir. Ayrıca asitle yıkama işleminin spinel kristal yapısının kafes yapısında bozulmaya neden olduğu belirlenmiştir. Yapay lityum stok çözeltisiyle hazırlanmış olan çözeltilerde kesikli adsorpsiyon çalışması sonucunda 1.6 mg/g bir Li+ adsorpdiyon kapasitesine ulaşılmıştır. Bu sayede adsorban malzemenin yüksek konsantrasyonlu Li+ içeren yapay hazırlanmış sularda veya jeotermal sularda belirli bir adsorpsiyon kabiliyetine sahip olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Jeotermal sularda gerçekleştirilen 27 saatlik kolon deneyleri sonucunda da 1 g/dk besleme ile 1,7 ppm lik adsorpsiyon kapasitesine ulaşılmıştır. The thesis was carried out in order to produce adsorbents in the laboratory for the recovery of lithium in geothermal waters and to perform adsorption of lithium ion with the help of the adsorbent produced. The geothermal water used in the study was obtained from AF-25 drilling well of AFJET AS in Ömer-Gecek (Afyonkarahisar) geothermal region with medium enthalpy. Sodium silicate (glass water) was used as binder with MnCO3 and LiOH to produce lithium ion-sensitive inorganic adsorbent. The most suitable binder ratio in terms of both strength and adsorption performance was determined by using different sodium silicate binder after firing process at 450 oC mixture with Li/Mn ratio. The mixture consisting of Li / Mn and binder material was shaped by means of syringe in the dimensions of 0.3x0.4cm, dried in the oven at 105oC temperature, cooked in ash oven at 650oC temperature and acid washing operations were performed with HCl. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for adsorbent characterization showed that Li2MnO3 peaks with spinel crystal structure were observed in the samples. In addition, it was determined that acid washing process caused deterioration of the spinel crystal structure. As a result of batch adsorption study, Li+ adsorption capacity of 1.6 mg / g was achieved in the solutions prepared with artificial lithium stock solution. Thus, the adsorbent material was found to have a certain adsorption ability in artificially prepared waters containing high concentration Li+ or geothermal waters. As a result of the 27-hour column experiments carried out in geothermal waters, the adsorption capacity of 1,7 ppm was reached with 1 g/min feed.

Kozaklı Jeotermal Alanı (KJA) Orta Anadolu'da önemli bir jeotermal enerji potansiyeline sahiptir. Kozaklı jeotermal suları (KJS)'nın birincil akiferi Premesozoyik yaşlı mermerler, ikincil akiferi Tersiyer yaşlı kireçtaşlarıdır. KJA da jeotermal sulardan (KJS)'dan (45-96°C) 2900 adet konut ısıtmacılığı, seracılık ve termal turizm için yararlanılmaktadır. KJA da, KB-GD ve KD-GB yönlü fayların keşisme noktasında 14 Ocak 2007 tarihinde aniden ~40 m çapında ~10 m derinliğinde çöküntü/obruk meydana gelmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, KJA'daki bu çöküntünün oluşum mekanizmasını ve gelişimini incelemektir. Bunun için çöküntü alanında, jeofizik, jeoteknik, hidroloji, hidrojeoloji, hidrojeokimya, izotop ve insansız hava aracı gibi yöntemler uygulanmıştır. Çöküntü alanındaki jeofizik ölçümler çöküntü alanının üst bölümünün kırıklı-çatlaklı travertenlerden oluştuğunu işaret etmiştir. Çalışma alanındaki paleokarstik boşluklu travertenlerin üzerindeki örtü birim (10-15 m), siltli çakıl ve düşük plastisiteli siltten oluşmuştur. KJA ve çevresine ait hidrolojik veriler havzadaki buharlaşma-terlemenin bazen %90'ları geçtiğini göstermiştir. Bu durum, KJA daki karbonatlı kayaçlarda yüzeyden daha çok hipojenik karstlaşmanın etkinliğine işaret eder. Yani, Na-Ca-Cl-SO4/HCO3 su tipli, 14C izotoplarına göre görünür yaşı 35000 yılı aşmış KJS'nin beslenimi Holosen dönemine kadar uzanmaktadır. Derin ve yavaş dolaşımlı KJS'nin, derinlerden yüzeye doğru yükselimi sırasında soğuk sularla karışması suların çözücü (karışım korozyonu) özelliğini arttırmıştır. Bu aşındırıcı sular KJA'da karstlaşmanın ilerlemesine yol açmıştır. Ayrıca, aşırı jeotermal su çekimi (23000 m3/gün), jeotermal atık sular için yeterli sayıda reenjeksiyon kuyusunun bulunmaması ve Kozaklı belediyesi kaplıca park alanında yapılan çevre düzenlemesinin de tetiklemesiyle çöküntü meydana gelmiştir., Kozaklı geothermal field (KGF) has the most important geothermal energy potential in central Anatolia. The primary aquifer of the Kozaklı geothermal waters (KGW) is the Premesozoic aged marbles and the secondary aquifer is Tertiary aged limestones. In KJA, geothermal waters (KGW) (45-96°C) are utilized for the heating of a total of 2900 residential houses, greenhouse and thermal tourism. A subsidence of ~ 10 m deep at ~ 40 m diameter occurred suddenly at the intersection of NW-SE and NW-SW faults in KGF on January 14, 2007. The purpose of this study is to examine the mechanism and development of this subsidence in the KJA. For this reason, geophysical, geotechnical, hydrological, hydrogeological, hydrogeochemistrical and isotopical methods have been applied to subsidence field (SF). Geophysical measurements in the subsidence field indicate that the upper part of the subsidence consists of fractured-cracked travertines and continues to the thermal hotels in the NW-SE direction. The cover unit (10-15 m) consists of silty gravel and low-plasticity silt overlying travertine with paleokarstic structure at the subsidence field. The hydrological data of KGF and its vicinity denote as high as sometimes 90% of the evapotranspiration at the basin. This suggests that the activity of hypogenic karstification is higher than the surface karstification in the carbonate rocks in the KGF. That is, the recharge of KGW which has Na-Ca-Cl-SO4/HCO3 water-type and over 35,000 years apparent age by 14C isotopes, extends to Holocene period. The mixing of deep and slow circulating KGS with cold waters during the ascent from deep to the surface has increased their corrosive feature (mixing corrosion). These corrosive waters led the progress of karstification in the KGF. In addition, the subsidence occurred due to over exploitation of the geothermal water (23,000 m3/day), lack of sufficient reinjection wells for the geothermal wastewater, and triggering of landscaping in the Kozaklı manucipal bath park area.

This thesis is subdivided in two main parts: Simultaneous boron and lithium separations and recoveries using bipolar membrane electrodilaysis process (BMED) process and production of ultrapure water from RO permeate using electrodeionization (EDI) process. In the first part, parametric studies based investigation of the influence of applied electrical potential on simultaneous boron and lithium separations and recoveries and initial sample concentration by using ASTOM ACYLYSER EX3 BMED. In addition, the influence of applied electrical potential, sample solution volume and pH, acid and base compartments solutions composition was monitored using PCCell 64004 BMED system. Later on, both ASTOM and PCCell BMED systems were compared with Mega BMED system applied in their optimal operational conditions. All the systems tested were effective in simultaneous boron and lithium separations and recoveries. But each system showed differences in terms of optimal operational conditions to obtain maximum performance. In the second part, the applicability of electrodeionization method to produce ultrapure water from RO permeate of geothermal water. In studies, the effects of feed flow rate, electrical potential applied, cell number, type of ion exchange membranes and ion exchange resins employed on electrical conductivity, contents of boron, silicon and arsenic were investigated. In addition, recycle use of EDI system was studied., Bu tez çalışması, iki ayrı ana bölümden oluşmaktadır: Bipolar membran elektrodiyaliz (BMED) yöntemiyle bor ve lityum ayrılması, geri kazanılması ve jeotermal suyun ters ozmos süzüntüsünden elektrodeiyonizasyon (EDI) yöntemi kullanılarak ultra saf su üretilmesidir. Birinci bölümde, ASTOM ACYLYSER EX3 BMED kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen parametrik çalışmalarda; uygulanan elektriksel potansiyelin ve başlangıç derişiminin sulu çözeltiden bor ve lityumun eşzamanlı ayırılması ve geri kazanımlarına olan etkisi incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, uygulanan elektriksel potansiyel, örnek çözelti hacmi, pH, asit ve baz bölmelerindeki çözelti bileşimlerinin etkileri PCCell 64004 BMED sistemi kullanılarak izlenmiştir. Hem Astom hem de PCCell sisteminde elde edilen optimum çalışma koşulları, Mega BMED sistemin de kullanılarak karşılaştırma yapılmıştır. Test edilen tüm sistemler bor ve lityumun aynı anda ayrılmasında ve geri kazanımında etkili olmuştur. Fakat her bir sistemin maksimum performansı farklı çalışma koşullarında elde edilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, jeotermal suyun ters ozmos süzüntüsünden ultra saf su üretiminde elektrodeiyonizasyon yönteminin uygulanabilirliği incelenmiştir. Çalışmalarda akış hızı, elektriksel potansiyel, hücre sayısı, membran tipi, iyon değiştirici reçine türü gibi proses değişkenlerinin ürün suyun elektriksel iletkenliği bor, silisyum ve arsenik içeriğine olan etkileri incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, EDI sistemin geri kullanımı da araştırılmıştır.

Direct release of geothermal waters to the environment may cause some adverse effects to plants because they contain some toxic species such as boron, arsenic, fluoride etc. despite valuable minerals including lithium. Although boron is essential element for some metabolic activities in plants, there is a small range between boron deficiency and boron toxicity for plants. In this study, batch and column mode tests were performed to evaluate the abilities of boron selective ion exchange resins, Diaion CRB 02 and Diaion CRB 05, as well as a novel chelating fiber Chelest Fiber GRY-HW for boron removal from geothermal water. On the other hand, geothermal water with higher lithium concentration (1-10 mg/L) due to the thermal interactions with rocks and sand in the aquifer can be considered as an alternative resource for lithium which has a very important place in many applications such as ion batteries, thermonuclear fusion, medicines, ceramic glasses, adhesives and electrode welding, when compared to the lithium concentration of seawater (~0.17 mg/L), which is widely used for lithium recovery. For the separation of lithium from geothermal water batch and column adsorption studies were performed by using both powdery and granulated forms of λ-MnO2 derived from spinel-type lithium manganese dioxide. In addition, a hybrid process coupling adsorption and membrane filtration was used to separate lithium from geothermal water. In these studies, the effect of process parameters on the separation of lithium such as adsorbent type, adsorbent concentration, the replacement speed of fresh and saturated adsorbents and flow rate of permeate stream were investigated. Besides, by utilization of a boron selective resin, Dowex XUS-43594.00, together with λ-MnO2 in the hybrid studies, simultaneous separation of boron and lithium from geothermal water was also conducted. All data obtained from batch adsorption studies were interpreted by using adsorption isotherm models. Moreover, mathematical models related with adsorption kinetics were used to figure out the rate order and rate determining step of boron and lithium sorption for both boron and lithium selective materials. The results showed that boron selective chelating resins along with novel chelating fiber could be employed as efficient adsorbents to decrease boron concentration in geothermal water below the permissible level for irrigation water (, Jeotermal suların çevreye doğrudan salınması, lityum da dahil olmak üzere içerdiği değerli minerallere rağmen bor, arsenik, florür vb. gibi bazı toksik türleri de içerdiğinden bitkiler üzerinde bazı olumsuz etkilere neden olabilir. Bu çalışmada, yeni bir şelatlayıcı fiber malzeme olan Chelest Fiber GRY-HW'nin yanı sıra bor seçimli iyon değiştirici reçineler Diaion CRB 02 ve Diaion CRB 05'in jeotermal sudan bor giderim performanslarını değerlendirmek için kesikli ve kolon testleri gerçekleştirilmiştir. Öte yandan, iyon pilleri, termonükleer füzyon, tıbbi ilaçlar, seramik camlar, yapıştırıcılar ve elektrot kaynağı gibi birçok uygulama alanında oldukça önemli bir yere sahip olan lityumun eldesi için yaygın olarak kullanılan deniz suyunun lityum derişimi (~0.17 mg/L) ile karşılaştırıldığında, jeotermal suyun akiferdeki kayalar ve kumlarla termal etkileşimine bağlı olarak içerdiği daha yüksek lityum derişimi (1-10 mg/L) alternatif bir kaynak olarak düşünülmesini sağlamaktadır. Jeotermal sudan lityum ayrılması için, spinel türdeki lityum manganez dioksitten türetilen toz haline getirilmiş ve granüle edilmiş λ-MnO2 kullanarak kesikli ve kolon adsorpsiyon çalışmaları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ayrıca, adsorpsiyon ve membran filtrasyonu bütünleştiren hibrit yöntem jeotermal sudan lityum ayrılması için kullanılmıştır. Çalışmalarda adsorbent tipi, adsorbent derişimi, taze ve doygun adsorbentlerin yer değiştirme hızı ile süzüntü akış hızı gibi proses parametrelerinin lityum ayrılması üzerine etkisi incelenmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra hibrit çalışmalarda, λ-MnO2 ile bor seçimli Dowex XUS-43594.00 reçinesinin bir arada kullanılmasıyla jeotermal sudan eş zamanlı olarak bor ve lityum ayrılmaya çalışılmıştır. Kesikli adsorpsiyon çalışmaları sonucunda elde edilen veriler, adsorpsiyon izoterm modelleri ile yorumlanmıştır. Günümüzde enerji ihtiyacının büyük kısmı fosil kaynaklı enerji ürünleriyle karşılanmaktadır. Enerji kaynaklarının tükenmeye yüz tutması ve çevreye verdikleri zararlar nedeniyle yeni ve yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları gündeme gelmiştir. Jeotermal enerji de bu kaynaklar arasında çevreci ve yenilenebilir bir kaynak olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. Jeotermal sular enerji kaynağı olmanın yanı sıra, zengin mineraller içermesi nedeniyle birçok amaçla kullanılmaktadır. Bu elementlerin sulardan geri kazanılması ve ekonomiye dönüştürülmesi oldukça önemli bir prosestir. Bor yüksek miktarlarda çevreye verildiğinde bitkilerde zehirlenmeye, bitki veriminin düşmesi, gibi birçok etkiye sebep olmaktadır. Ancak geri kazanıldığında endüstriyel alanda geniş kullanım alanına sahiptir. Arsenik ise çevreye verildiğinde kanser gibi tehlikeli hastalıklara sebep olurken geri kazanıldığında tıpta, dişçilikte kullanılabilmektedir. Lityum ise hem pahalı hem de rezervleri azalmakta olan önemli elementlerden biridir. Geri kazanımı yapıldığında cep telefon bataryaları, nükleer füzyon yakıtı gibi endüstriyel uygulamalar da kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, jeotermal sulardan membran filtrasyon ve iyon değiştirme yöntemleri birlikte kullanılarak bor, lityum ve arsenik elementlerinin seçimli olarak ayrılması amaçlanmıştır. Jeotermal su SDS Enerji AŞ. tarafından sağlanmıştır. Jeotermal sudan membran filtrasyonuyla bu elementlerin ayrılması için laboratuvar ölçekli çapraz akışlı düz tabaka membran test ünitesi ((SEPA CF-II, GE) kullanılmıştır. 4 farklı membran (DL, CK, NF-90 ve BW-XLE) kullanılmıştır. Membran çalışmalarının akabinde iyon değiştirme çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Bor ayrılması için bor seçimli Diaion CRB-02 reçinesi, arsenik ayrılması için ArsenXnp reçinesi kullanılmıştır. Lityum ayrılması için lityum seçimli inorganik λ-MnO2 adsorbanı kullanılmıştır., Today, most of the energy need is met by fossil fuel based energy products. Decrease in current exhaustible fossil energy resources and environmental problems caused by some of these resources have brought forward the new and renevable energy resources. Thus, geothermal energy, being a resource which is renevable and environmental among these resources. Geothermal waters can be utilized due to their rich mineral contents among an energy resource. The recovery of these precious minerals, is a very important process. Boron which exists in geothermal water is required for some metabolic activities of plants, but if the concentration of boron is high, it leads to adverse effects. However, when recovered boron, it has widely used area in industries. Arsenic is also a big problem for environment. Its toxicity and health hazards caused cancer and etc. diseases, but when recovered it can used in medicine and dentistry. Lithium is an expensive and important element because of its diclining reserves. Lithium recovery from geothermal waters is important for industrial applications such as production of cell phones batteries and nuclear fusion. In this study, selective separation of boron, lithium and arsenic from geothermal water using together membrane filtration and ion exchange-method was aimed. Geothermal water samples used were obtained from SDS Enerji AŞ. A lab scale cross-flow flat-sheet membrane test unit (SEPA CF-II, GE) was used for membrane filtration of these elements from geothermal water. 4 different membranes membran (DL, CK, NF-90 and BW-XLE) are used in studies. After membrane studies, ion exchange studies starts. Boron and arsenic removal studies were performed by Diaion CRB-02 and ArsenXnp ion exchange resins respectively. Lithium recovery studies were carried out by using lithium selective inorganic adsorbent (λ-MnO2).

Bu tezin amacı, Ziga (Aksaray) jeotermal alanında mevcut travertenleri geliştirmenin yanısıra yapılacak havuzlarda travertenlerin oluşum mekanizmasını belirlemek, jeotermal suları sürdürülebilirlik ve termal turizm açısından su kimyası yöntemleriyle değerlendirmek, koruma alanlarını çizmek, yeni sondaj ve jeotermal atıksuyun uzaklaştırılması için reenjeksiyon kuyu noktalarını önermektir. İnceleme alanında su kimyası örneklemeleri ile önceki analizlerden de faydalanılarak yorumlar yapılmış, dönemsel farklılıklar dikkate alınmış, hazne kaya sıcaklıkları hakkında tahminlerde bulunulmuştur. Alanda çökelmiş olan travertenlerin izotop miktarları dikkate alınarak çökelim sıcaklıklarındaki değişimler hakkında fikir edinilmiştir. Traverten çökelim mekanizmasının anlaşılabilmesi için deneysel çalışma alanındaki suların pH, CO2 ve sıcaklık gibi fiziksel parametreleri ölçülmüştür. Bu bağlamda deneysel çalışma alanında 10 günlük süre sonunda 1,5-2 mm tufa oluşumu gözlenmiştir. ZJA'da bulunan sondaj kuyusunda, İller Bankasının yapmış olduğu çalışmalar ile 175 m. derinlikte, 45,27 °C ve 310,87 psig değerleri elde edilmiştir. Bu verilere göre, yıllar bazında uzun süreli olarak yüksek debilerde üretim yapılabileceği, ancak statik ve dinamik basınç/seviye değerlerinin değişebileceği fark edilmiştir. ZJA suları balneoterapik tedavi amaçlı kullanılabilir özelliktedir. İnceleme alanında jeolojik çalışmalar yürütülmüş, 1. koruma alanı içerisine alınan, aktif tektonik hatların bulunduğu traverten alanlarında yeni sondaj noktaları, havza kenarlarında bulunan derin faylar üzerinde ise gradyan sondajı olarak reenjeksiyon noktaları önerilmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Jeotermal su, Sürdürülebilir kullanım, Traverten, Termal turizm, Ziga, Aksaray., The aim of this thesis is to enable the constitution of travertines in constructed travertineponds besides improving the existing ones in Ziga (Aksaray) geothermal field, to evaluate geothermal waters with water chemistry methods in terms of sustainability and thermal tourism, drawing protection areas,suggesting reinjection wells to remove geothermal sewagesand new drillings. The study area, interpretations are made by utilizing the previous analysis and sample surveys for water chemistry. Periodical differences are taken into consideration and predictions are made about reservoir rock temperatures. Opinions are formed about temperature variations by considering the isotope amounts of travertines settled in area. In order to understand the travertine precipitation mechanism in situ, physical parameters such as, pH, CO2 and temperatures are measured, At the end of 10 days in case study area, 1.5-2 mm tufas are observed.At the borehole exisiting in ZJA, 45,27 °C and 310,87 psigvalues are obtained in 175 meter depth with the studies done by Provincial Bank. According to these datas year based long therm production could be made at higher flow rates, but static and dynamic pressure/level values can be changed. ZJA waters have the property of being used as balneotheraphy treatment purposed.Geological studies are conducted in the area of investigation and new borehole spots are suggested on active tectonic lines found in travertine fields that arconsindred in the 1st protection area and reinjection locations are suggested as gradient bores on deep faultlines found on basin sides.

Bor bitkiler, hayvanlar ve insanlar için önemli bir besin elementidir fakat yeterlilik ve asırılık arasındaki oran azdır. Onun eser miktarı bitkilerin ve hayvanların etkili büyümesi için yeterli görülmektedir. Baska bir deyisle daha fazla dozlar toksik olabilir. Sulama suyundaki minimum bor konsantrasyonu hücresel çogalma, nükleik asit metabolizması, fotosentetik islemi kontrol eden sekerin metabolizması gibi bitkilerin bazı metabolik aktiviteleri için gereklidir. Baska bir deyisle su sıkıntısı gerçegi vardır. Bütün su kaynakları bitkilerin ve insanların yasamlarını sürdürmeleri için büyük bir dikkatle kullanılmalıdır. Bu kaynakların bir tanesi de jeotermal sudur. Bu çalısmada Balçova (Izmir) jeotermal suyundan iyon degistirici reçine ve fiberler kullanılarak borun uzaklastırılması arastırılmıstır. Giderim çalısmaları kesikli ve kolon denemeleri seklinde çalısılmıstır. Aynı zamanda borun jeotermal su ve jeotermal su ters osmoz akıntısından giderilmesi için basınç ve bekleme süresi parametreleri göz önünde bulundurularak adsorbsiyon-ultrafiltration hibrit prosesi kullanılmıstır. Borun jeotermal su ve jeotermal su ters osmoz akıntısından giderilmesi için reçine ve fiber olarak N-metil glukamin grubu içeren reçine, Dowex XUS- 43594.00 ve bor seçimli fiber olan Smopex 248V kullanılmıstır.

Araştırma alanının yer aldığı Aydın ili, çok sayıda ve değişik büyüklükte fay hattının ve buna bağlı olarak sıcak su kaynaklarının bulunduğu bir bölgede yer almaktadır. Bölgede bulunan jeotermal sular, içme sularına oranla çevreyi olumsuz etkileyebilecek düzeyde zararlı maddeler içermektedir. Bu zararlı maddelerin, sularda ve topraklarda yüksek konsantrasyonda bulunması halinde, doğal kaynakların sürdürülebilirliğini ve çevrede bulunan canlı yaşamını olumsuz etkileyeceği bir gerçektir.Araştırma sürecinde Alangüllü yan havzasında yer alan jeotermal suların bulaştığı dere yatakları ile bu suların sulama suyu olarak kullanıldığı tarımsal arazilerden alınan toprak örneklerinin fiziksel ve kimyasal, su örneklerinin ise kimyasal analizleri E.Ü.Z.F Toprak Bölümü Laboratuarlarında yapılmıştır. Laboratuar analiz sonuçlarına göre toprak ve su örneklerinde bulunan maddelerin çevreye olan etki düzeyleri ve araştırma alanındaki coğrafi dağılımları belirlenmiştir. Bu araştırma ile jeotermal suların sahip olduğu kimyasal özelliklerinden dolayı çevreye olan etkisi, su ve toprak kaynaklarına bulaşma düzeyleri mevsimsel olarak araştırılmıştır. The research area, the province of Aydın, is located in an area which has many various sizes of fault lines and depending on this, hot water sources. Geothermal waters in the region compared to drinking water contains levels of harmful substances that may adversely affect the environment. It is a fact that in the event of these harmful substances found in high concentrations in water and soil will adversely affect natural resources and environmental sustainability in the vibrant life.In the research process, the pyhsical and chemical analysis in the soil samples and the chemical analysis in the water sample taken from the stream beds of these water that contaminated geothermal water and the water that is used as the irrigation water in the agricultural land in Alangüllü geothermal basin, have been made by the laboratories of Soil Departmant in Ege University Agricultural Engineering Faculty. According to the results of laboratory analysis, levels of the effects of substances to the environment in soil and water samples and the geographical distribution in the research field were determined. With this research, the effect of geothermal water to the environment because it has the chemical properties and the geothermal water's reach level to water and soil resources were assessed periodically. 162

Dünyada kullanılacak yeterli suyun olmaması sorunu, yeni su kaynaklarının ve su arıtım yöntemlerinin geliştirilmesini gerektirmektedir. Jeotermal suların kullanımı bu soruna alternatif bir çözüm olarak görülebilmektedir. Ancak jeotermal sular mineral çözünmesi sonucu bor ve arseniğin yanında pek çok element içermektedir. Yapılan çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçlar arsenik ve borun insanlar, hayvanlar ve bitkiler üzerindeki olumsuz etkilerini göstermektedir ve bu durum suda bulunmasına izin verilecek maksimum kirlilik düzeyleri için düzenlemelerin yapılmasına neden olmaktadır.Bu çalışmada, iyon değiştirici reçineler ile jeotermal sulardan arsenik ve borun uzaklaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Jeotermal su örnekleri Balçova, İzmir ve Hachoubaru, Kyushu, Japonya'dan alınmıştır.Balçova ve Hachoubaru jeotermal sularından borun uzaklaştırılması deneyleri, kesikli çalışmalar ve kolon çalışmaları şeklinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bor giderimi için bora seçimli farklı iyon değiştiriciler (Lewatit MK 51, Diaion CRB03, DOWEX XUS-43594.00, Amberlite PWA 10, Smopex 248V ve bora seçimli kompozit fiber) kullanılmış ve sonuçlar bor giderimi verimi açısından karşılaştırılmıştır. Kesikli çalışmalar ve kolon çalışmalarının yanı sıra, yeni bir yöntem olan batık sorpsiyon-membran filtrasyonu sistemi de Balçova jeotermal suyundan borun uzaklaştırılması için kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca bora seçimli iyon değiştirici reçine, DOWEX XUS-43594.00, ile Balçova jeotermal suyu kullanılarak, bor sorpsiyonunun kinetik olarak tepkime derecesi ve hız tayin basamağının belirlenmesi için literatürde mevcut bazı matematiksel modeller kullanılmıştır.Reçine miktarının arsenik giderimi üzerindeki etkisini incelemek için Hachoubaru jeotermal suyu ile arseniğe seçimli iyon değiştirici reçineler, Lewatit FO 36 ve ArsenXnp, ve Balçova jeotermal suyu ile Lewatit FO 36 reçinesi kullanılarak kesikli çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Ayrıca Hachoubaru jeotermal suyundan arseniğin uzaklaştırılması için Lewatit FO 36 ve ArsenXnp reçineleri ile kolon çalışmaları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Reçinelerin kolon performansları incelenmiş ve karşılaştırılmıştır. The water shortage around the world makes it necessary to find out new water sources and water treatment methods. Utilization of geothermal waters can be an alternative solution to this problem. But as a result of mineral dissolution, geothermal waters contain various types of species which includes boron and arsenic. In literature, accumulated data indicate the remarkable negative effects of arsenic and boron on human, animals and plants, which cause the regulations of maximum contamination levels of them in water.In this study, removal of boron and arsenic from geothermal waters by ion exchange resins was aimed. Geothermal water samples used were taken from Balçova, İzmir and Hachoubaru, Kyushu, Japan.Boron removal studies from Balçova and Hachoubaru geothermal waters were performed as batch-mode and column-mode tests. Different kinds of ion exchangers (Lewatit MK 51, Diaion CRB03, DOWEX XUS-43594.00, Amberlite PWA 10, Smopex 248V and a composite boron selective fiber) were used for boron removal and compared in terms of boron removal efficiency. Besides batch-mode and column-mode tests, a novel submerged sorption-membrane filtration method was used for boron removal from Balçova geothermal water. Also mathematical modeling study for boron selective ion-exchange resin, DOWEX XUS-43594.00, was performed to investigate the rate order and rate determining step of boron sorption on the resin by using Balçova geothermal water.Batch-mode tests were performed to determine the effect of resin amount on arsenic removal with ArsenXnp and Lewatit FO 36 by using Hachoubaru geothermal water and with Lewatit FO 36 by using Balçova geothermal water. Also, column-mode tests were performed for remediation of arsenic from Hachoubaru geothermal water by using ion exchange resins, Lewatit FO 36 and ArsenXnp. The column performances of these resins were investigated and compared. 171

Bor bitkilerin bazı metabolik aktivitelerini tamamlayabilmeleri için gerekli bir elementtir. Ancak yüksek düzeyde bor, bitkinin gelişimini olumsuz yönde etkilemektedir. Farklı bitkiler farklı bor seviyelerine duyarlıdırlar. Örneğin, turunçgiller için en uygun bor derişim aralığı 0.3-0.5 mg/L iken, mısır için 0.5-0.75 mg/L' dir. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) borun insan sağlığı üzerindeki zararlı etkilerini göz önünde bulundurarak, içme sularındaki limit bor derişim düzeyini 0.3 mg/L olarak belirlemiştir. Bu sebeplerden dolayı, borun su ve atık sulardan giderilmesi günümüzde üzerinde önemle çalışılması gereken bir konu olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır.Bu çalışmada, iyon değiştirme prosesi ve klasik arıtım yöntemlerine göre bazı avantajlara sahip olan iyon değiştirme-membran filtrasyon hibrit yöntem kullanılarak model çözelti ve jeotermal sulardan bor giderimine ilişkin elde edilen sonuçlar sunulacaktır.İlk bölümde, farklı iyonik türlere sahip model bor çözeltileri ve iyon değiştirici reçineler kullanılarak adsorpsiyon izotermleri incelenmiştir. Daha sonra, reçinelerin farklı iyonik şiddet ortamından bor giderimlerine ilişkin kinetik performansları karşılaştırılmıştır. Kızıldere ve Balçova jeotermal sularından bor giderimi için gerekli olan optimum reçine miktarı belirlendikten sonra Kızıldere jeotermal suyundan bor gideriminde reçine tanecik boyutunun ve karıştırma hızının; Balçova jeotermal suyundan bor gideriminde ise reçine tanecik boyutu, sıcaklık ve pH'ın sorpsiyon kinetiği üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Kinetik çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçlar, psödo birinci-ikinci mertebe kinetik modelleri ile difüzyon ve reaksiyon kinetik modelleri kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca, Diaion CRB 02 reçinesi kullanılarak bor gideriminde sıyırıcı derişiminin etkisi incelenmiştir. Son olarak, Balçova Jeotermal suyundan sürekli yöntemle bor giderimi bora seçimli Diaion CRB 02 ve Dowex (XUS 43594.00) reçineleri kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Dowex (XUS 43594.00) reçinesi kullanılarak sürekli yöntemle Balçova jeotermal suyundan bor giderimi üzerinde akış hızının etkisi incelenmiştir.İkinci bölümde, iyon değiştirme-membran hibrit prosesinin model bor çözeltisi ve jeotermal sulardan bor giderimindeki kinetik performansı Vivascience, Micropore ve daldırılmış (submerged) membran filtrasyon sistemler kullanılarak incelenmiştir.Vivascience membrane filtrasyon sistem ile sorpsiyon-yıkama-sıyırma-yıkama-rejenerasyon-yıkama basamaklarından oluşan beş döngü ile Diaion CRB 02 ve Dowex (XUS 43594.00) reçineleri kullanılarak model bor çözeltisinden bor giderimi test edilmiştir. Ayrıca, Micropore membran filtrasyon sistemi kullanılarak iyon değiştirme-membran filtrasyon hibrit prosesinin farklı iyonik şiddetteki model bor çözeltisi ve Balçova jeotermal suyundan bor giderimindeki kinetik performansı incelenmiştir. İyon değiştirme-mikrofiltrasyon hibrit sisteme ait kinetik model (karıştırmalı tanka ait) ile ?non-equilibrium model? kullanılarak deneysel çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçlar teorik sonuçlarla karşılaştırılmış ve borun reçine içindeki yayınımına ilişkin etkin difüzyon katsayısı ile kütle transfer katsayısı elde edilmiştir. Son olarak, daldırılmış (submerged) membran filtrasyon sistem kullanılarak, model bor çözeltisinden ve yüksek bor derişimi içeren Kızıldere ve Balçova jeotermal sularından bor giderimi incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma ile, jeotermal sudan bor gideriminde membran filtrasyon sisteminin verimini belirlemede etkin olan reçine tanecik boyutu, akış hızı ve reçine derişimi gibi optimum proses parametreleri saptanmıştır. Boron is an element which is required for certain metabolic activities in plants. However, higher boron levels accelerate plant decay and expiration. Different plants can withstand different boron levels. For example, the optimal boron concentration range is 0.3?0.5 mg/L for citrus and grapes but is 0.5?0.75 mg/L for corn. The WHO recommends a maximum concentration limit of boron of 0.3 mg B/L for drinking water. So, there is a need for removal of boron from water and wastewater to obtain the limit concentration value for environmental pollution control.In this study, the results related to boron removal from model boron solution and geothermal water by ion exchange method and ion exchange-membrane filtration hybrid system which has many advantages comparing with conventionally used fixed bed systems were explained.In the first part of the study, adsorption isotherm studies were carried out using ion exchange resins and the solutions containing different boron concentrations at different ionic strengths. After that, kinetic performances of the ion exchange resins for boron removal from model boron solutions at different ionic strengths were investigated. Besides, after determination of optimum resin amount for boron removal from Kızıldere and Balçova geothermal waters, the effects of resin particle size, stirring rate, temperature, and pH on kinetic performance of ion exchange resins for boron removal from Kızıldere and Balçova geothermal waters were determined. The results obtained were evaluated using pseudo first-second order and diffusional kinetic models. Also, effect of eluting agent concentration on elution performance was investigated using Diaion CRB 02 resin. As the last part, the efficiency of boron removal from Balçova geothermal water was investigated using boron selective ion exchange resins Diaion CRB 02 and Dowex (XUS 43594.00) by column-mode studies. Effect of feed flow rate on boron removal from geothermal water by column-mode study was additionally tested using Dowex (XUS 43594.00) resin.In the second part of the study, kinetic performance of ion exchange-membrane filtration hybrid process for boron removal from model boron solution and geothermal water was investiagted using different kinds of hybrid systems such as Vivascience, Micropore, and submerged membrane filtration systems.Vivascience membrane filtration system was tested for boron removal from model boron solution for five successive sorption-washing-elution-washing-regeneration-washing cycles using Diaion CRB 02 and Dowex (XUS 43594.00) resins. Elsewhere, kinetic performance of ion exchange-membrane hybrid process for boron removal from model boron solutions at different ionic strengths and from Balçova geothermal water was also investigated using Micropore membrane filtration system. Seeded microfiltration cell kinetic and non-equilibrium modelling approaches were used to compare the theoretical and experimental data and to determine the diffusivity of boron inside the resin and mass transfer coefficients. Additionally, submerged membrane filtration system was applied for boron removal from model boron solution, Kızıldere, and Balçova geothermal waters containing high level of boron. In this study, the optimum process parameters such as resin particle size, flow rate, and resin concentration that govern the efficiency of separation process for boron removal from geothermal water were determined. 314

Su canlılar için temel yaşam kaynaklarından biridir. Günümüzde su kaynaklarının hızla tükenmesi ve kirlenmesi dünyanın birçok bölgesinde giderek önem kazanan ve çözüm bekleyen bir konu olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Sudaki bor kirliliği önemli bir çevre problemidir. Bu nedenle bor, hem insan hem de hayvan sağlığı ve bitkiler üzerindeki olumsuz etkilerinden dolayı su iyileştirme kuruluşları tarafından dikkatlice izlenmektedir.Bu çalışmada, polimer destekli ultrafiltrasyon yöntemi kullanılarak model çözeltilerden (2.0 mg B/L ve 10.0 mg B/L) ve jeotermal sudan (bor derişimi 10.5 mg B/L olan) bor giderimi incelenmiştir. Çalışmalarımızda farklı geçerli sınır moleküler ağırlıklı (NMWL-5,000; 10,000; 50,000) Millipore ultrafiltrasyon membranları ve bor seçimli iyon değiştirici reçine Dowex XUS (0.355-0.500 mm ve 0-20 ?m) kullanılmıştır. Jeotermal sulardan ve model çözeltilerden borun giderilmesinde reçine miktarı, reçine tanecik boyutu, uygulanan basınç ve reçine-çözelti temas süresi gibi parametrelerin etkileri incelenmiştir. Sulama suları için önerilen limit bor derişimi (1 mg B/L) polimer destekli ultrafiltrasyon yöntemiyle kullanılan jeotermal su için elde edilmeye çalışılmıştır. The water is one of the basic life sources for the people. The rapid decrease and pollution in the water resources is becoming an increasingly important issue in many areas of the world. Water contamination by boron is a widespread environmental problem. That?s why, boron is gaining wide attention by water treatment community due to its adverse effects both on human/animal health and on agriculture.In this study, boron removal from model solutions (2.0 mg B/L and 10.0 mg B/L) and geothermal water (containing 10.5 mg B/L) was performed using polymer-assisted ultrafiltration method. Millipore ultrafiltration membranes with different nominal moleculer weight limit (NMWL- 5,000; 10,000; 50,000) and boron selective ion exchange resin Dowex XUS 43594.00 (0.355-0.500 mm and 0-20 ?m) were used for the experimental work. The effects of the such parameters as resin concentration, resin particle size, applied pressure, and the contact time between resin and solution on boron removal from model solutions and geothermal water were studied.
