Abstract Travertine deposits preserve an invaluable record of both ancient and modern fluid flow. The goal of this study is to reconstruct spatial and temporal patterns in travertine deposition associated with tectonic and climatic controls along the Lucero Uplift in New Mexico, USA. Uranium‐series ages of travertine deposits in the Lucero Uplift range from 0.94 ± 0.01 to 592 ± 110 ka, indicating that travertine formation has been episodically active since at least ∼600 ka. We find minimal evidence to attribute glacial and interglacial cycles to travertine formation in the Lucero Uplift. δ13C values in travertine deposits range from 2‰ to 9‰ (Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite), δ18O values range from 21‰ to 25‰ (Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water). Positive correlation between travertine δ13C and δ18O values indicate travertine formation is closely associated with various degrees of CO2 degassing. 87Sr/86Sr values in travertine deposits range from 0.714 to 0.717 and (234U/238U)i values exhibit a remarkably wide range from 3.6 to 9.3, indicative of fluid‐rock interaction during deep crustal circulation in more radiogenic basement rocks. Reconstructed δ13C, δ18O, and (234U/238U)i values in the inferred deep fluid sources showed systematic variations with travertine formation ages, while 87Sr/86Sr values remain relatively constant. Based on dating of undeformed travertine deposits, which overlie tilted Santa Fe Group units, and high (234U/238U)i we infer that the Santa Fe fault has not produced a ground‐rupturing earthquake within the last 490 ± 52 to 592 ± 110 ka (2σ). Our study suggest that travertine formation is driven by fluid flow facilitated by tectonic and mantle structures.

Zuni Salt Lake (ZSL) is a large maar in the Red Hill-Quemado volcanic field located in west-central New Mexico in the southwestern USA. Stratigraphic analysis of sections in and around the maar, coupled with optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) C dating, indicate that ZSL volcanic activity occurred between ∼13.4 and 9.9 ka and was most likely confined to a ≤500-year interval sometime between ∼12.3 and 11.0 ka. The basal volcanic unit consists of locally widespread basaltic ash fallout interpreted to represent a violent or wind-aided strombolian eruption tentatively attributed to Cerro Pomo, a scoria cone ∼10 km south of ZSL. Subsequent eruptions emanated from vents near or within the present-day ZSL maar crater. Strombolian eruptions of multiple spatter and scoria cones produced basaltic lava and scoria lapilli fallout. Next, a phreatomagmatic eruption created the maar crater and surrounding tephra rim and apron. ZSL eruptions ended with strombolian eruptions that formed three scoria cones on the crater floor. The revised age range of ZSL is younger and more precise than the 190-24 ka 2-sigma age range derived from previous argon dating. This implies that other morphologically youthful, argon-dated volcanoes on the southern margin of the Colorado Plateau might be substantially younger than previously reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Southern terminus of the Rio Grande Rift region has been poorly defined in the geologic record, with few seismic studies that provide information on the deeper Rift structure. In consequence, important questions related to tectonic and lithospheric activity of the Rio Grande Rift remain unresolved. To address some of these geological questions, we collect and analyze seismic data from 147 EarthScope Transportable Array (USArray) and other seismic stations in the region, to develop a 3-D crust and upper mantle velocity model. We apply a constrained optimization approach for joint inversion of surface wave and receiver functions using seismic S wave velocities as a model parameter. In particular, we compute receiver functions stacks based on ray parameter, and invert them jointly with collected surface wave group velocity dispersion observations. The inversions estimate 1-D seismic S-wave velocity profiles to 300 km depth, which are then interpolated to a 3-D velocity model using a Bayesian kriging scheme. Our 3-D models show a thin lower velocity crust anomaly along the southeastern Rio Grande Rift, a persistent low velocity anomaly underneath the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range province, and another one at depth beneath the Jemez lineament, and the southern RGR. Abstract: This paper is primarily concerned with seismically imaging details in the mantle at an intermediate scale length between the large scales of regional and global tomography and the small scales of reflection profiles and outcrops. This range is roughly 0.1–1 km< a <10–102 km, where a is the scale. We consider the implications of several models for mantle evolution in a convecting mantle, and possible scales present in the non-convecting tectosphere. Reflection seismic evidence shows that the structures preserved from continental accretion within and at the margins of the Archean cratons are subduction related, and we use subduction as an analog for scales left by past events. In modern orogenic belts we expect to find subduction structures, small scale upper mantle convection structures, and basalt extraction structures. We examine some of the scales that are likely formed by orogenic processes. We also examine the seismic velocity and density contrasts expected between various upper mantle constituents, including fertile upper mantle, depleted upper mantle, normal and eclogitized oceanic crust, and fertile mantle with and without partial melt. This leads directly to predicting the size of seismic signals that can be produced by specular conversion, and scattering from layers and objects with these contrasts. We introduce an imaging scheme that makes use of scattered waves in teleseismic receiver functions to make a depth migrated image of a pseudo-scattering coefficient. Image resolution is theoretically at least an order of magnitude better than traveltime tomography. We apply the imaging scheme to three data sets from 1) the Kaapvaal craton, 2) the Cheyenne Belt, a Paleoproterozoic suture between a protocontinent and an island arc, and 3) the Jemez Lineament, a series of aligned modern volcanic structures at the site of a Proterozoic suture zone. The Kaapvaal image, although not defining a unique base of the tectosphere, shows complicated “layered” events in the region defined as the base of the tectosphere in tomography images. The image of the transition zone discontinuities beneath the Kaapvaal craton is remarkable for clarity. The migrated receiver function image of the upper mantle beneath the Cheyenne belt is complicated, more so than the tomography image, and may indicate limitations in the receiver function imaging system. In contrast the Jemez Lineament image shows large-amplitude negative-polarity layered events beneath the Moho to depths of ∼120 km, that we interpret as melt-containing sills in the upper mantle. These sills presumably feed the Quaternary–Neogene regional basaltic volcanic field. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
