Een uitdaging hierbij is dat wetenschappelijke informatie vaak op verschillende, alternatieve manieren kan worden uitgelegd. Dit is iets wat vertrouwen in instanties en hun interpretatie van deze informatie onder druk kan zetten. Ten slotte zijn er signalen uit de sociale omgeving aan de hand waarvan mensen een oordeel vormen over een risico, bijvoorbeeld van vrienden of de sociale media. Aangezien de sociale media steeds belangrijker worden, doen instanties er goed aan om ook via deze kanalen contact te hebben met burgers. Een goed opgezette sociale media strategie is hierbij belangrijk. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld aan de orde zijn bij het gebruik van radioactieve stoffen in ziekenhuizen of bij het beheer van afval in de industrie. Om deze reden zijn dergelijke handelingen en werkzaamheden gebonden aan regels en voorschriften. De mate waarin dit het geval is, is doorgaans afhankelijk van de blootstelling. In bepaalde omstandigheden kunnen materialen van deze regels worden vrijgesteld. Aangezien de Europese wetgeving over deze vrijstelling is gewijzigd, heeft het RIVM op hoofdlijnen de gevolgen daarvan in kaart gebracht. Als materialen slechts een zeer geringe blootstelling met zich meebrengen, draagt regelgeving niet bij aan een betere bescherming van mensen. Deze materialen kunnen worden vrijgesteld van regulering. Ondernemers kunnen op basis van een toetsing aan zogenoemde vrijstellings- of vrijgavegrenswaarden bepalen of dit aan de orde is. Deze grenswaarden zijn wettelijk vastgelegd en gebaseerd op internationale aanbevelingen en richtlijnen (richtlijn 96/29/Euratom). In december 2013 is een nieuwe richtlijn vastgesteld (2013/59/Euratom), die eerdere richtlijnen op dit gebied vervangt en uiterlijk in 2018 dient te zijn omgezet in nationale regelgeving. Dit betekent onder meer dat de Europese kaders voor vrijstelling en vrijgave van regulering gedeeltelijk worden herzien. In dit briefrapport wordt het huidige Nederlandse beleid en de regelgeving op het gebied van vrijstelling en vrijgave beschreven. Daarnaast is weergegeven hoe Nederland de huidige Europese kaders heeft ingevuld en wat er gaat veranderen. Hierbij is ook gekeken hoe buurlanden dit beleid hebben vormgegeven. Ten slotte worden enkele opties voorgesteld om de voorschriften uit de nieuwe richtlijn te implementeren.

Het blijkt niet mogelijk om een indicator te bedenken die voor het onderdeel 'straling' binnen het thema 'verspreiding' de feitelijke toestand in 1 getal samenvat en wel zodanig dat uit de trend in deze indicator de voortgang van het stralingshygienische milieubeleid is op te maken. Dat is de conclusie van het onderzoek dat antwoord moest geven op de vraag van het ministerie van VROM om analoog aan de indicatoren voor prioritaire stoffen en bestrijdingsmiddelen binnen het thema 'verspreiding' een rekenwijze voor zo'n indicator te ontwikkelen. De belangrijkste oorzaken voor het niet haalbaar zijn van de indicator zijn het ontbreken van direct bruikbare beleidsdoelstellingen en het ontbreken van basisgegevens die nodig zijn voor het berekenen van de indicator. Als de beleidsdoelstellingen worden vervangen door referentie-emissies, referentie-concentraties en referentiedoses is het wel mogelijk om voor onderdelen van het aandachtsgebied 'radioactieve stoffen en straling' indicatoren te definieren. In het rapport worden milieudrukindicatoren voor de nucleaire installaties en voor de procesindustrie voorgesteld. De milieukwaliteitsindicator voor radioactieve stoffen in oppervlaktewater en zwevend stof moet nog nader worden bestudeerd. Voor radium in baggerspecie is een milieukwaliteitsindicator haalbaar en wenselijk, hoewel er geen beleidsdoelstelling voorhanden is. Een milieukwaliteitsindicator voor radon en externe straling in woningen is voorlopig nog niet te maken. Het voorstel is om de dosis gemiddeld over de populatie als milieueffectindicator te gaan hanteren. Als er 1 milieubeleidsindicator voor straling zou moeten worden gekozen, dan gaat de voorkeur uit naar de milieudrukindicator. Daarbij dient de referentie-emissie van het secundaire (dosis) niveau te worden afgeleid. Beneden dit secundaire niveau geeft de overheid geen prioriteit meer aan de optimalisatie van de stralingsbescherming (ALARA-principe - as low as reasonably achievable).

Masteroppgave i Folkehelsevitenskap ved Institutt for plante- og miljøvitenskap. 30 studiepoeng. Bakgrunn: Bruk av datatomografi (CT) har økt i Norge de siste ti årene og står nå for 80 % av befolkningsdosen fra medisinsk bruk av stråling. Det er usikkerhet rundt risikoen ved bruk av ioniserende stråling, særlig knyttet til CT av barn og unge. En stor internasjonal studie (EPI-CT-prosjektet) tar sikte på å skaffe økt kunnskap om risiko for leukemi og hjernekreft forbundet med CT-undersøkelser hos barn og unge. Studiens hensikt: Karlegging av organdoser til barn ved CT-undersøkelser på 1990-tallet. Studien er gjennomført i samarbeid med Statens Strålevern som er deltaker i EPI-CT-prosjektet. Materiale og metode: Stedlige protokoller fra CT-scannere som ble brukt på 1990-tallet beregnet for voksne, og betaversjon av ny programvare for utregning av organdoser til barn og unge som skal brukes i EPI-CT-prosjektet. To dosekalkulatorer som er tilgjengelig på markedet er brukt til sammenligning av ny programvare. Organdoser til barn i ulike aldersgrupper er beregnet for ulike scannermodeller og for stedlige protokoller. Disse resultatene er sammenlignet med aldersjusterte protokoller som brukes i dag. Resultater: Det er store variasjoner i doser til ulike aldersgrupper, scannermodeller og stedlige protokoller. Dersom 1990-protokoller ble brukt på barn, betyr det at en ettåring kan ha mottatt doser i størrelsesorden 54 (17– 77) mGy til hjerne og 21 (7 – 31) mGy til rød benmarg for CT av hode. For CT av thorax kan en nyfødt ha mottatt doser i størrelsesorden 14 (10 – 21) mGy til rød benmarg. For CT av abdomen kan dosene har vært 10 (6 – 17) mGy til rød benmarg for aldersgruppen 10 år. Dette er doser som er til dels betydelig høyere enn aldersjusterte protokoller som brukes i dag. Konklusjon: Under forutsetning av at voksenprotokoller ble brukt, er dosene barn fikk ved CT-undersøkelser på 1990-tallet er av en slik størrelsesorden at man kan vente og finne resultater i EPI-CT-prosjektet. There is uncertainty around the risks from ionizing radiation, particularly related to the use of computed tomography in children. A large international study (EPI-CT project) aims to provide knowledge about the risk of leukemia and brain cancer associated with computed tomography in children and adolescents. Purpose of the study: Calculation of organ doses to children from computed tomography examinations in the 1990s. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority as a participant in the EPI-CT project. Materials and methods: Local protocols from scanners used in the 1990s intended for adults, and a beta version of new software for calculation of organ doses to children to be used in the EPI-CT project. Two dose calculators available on the market are used for comparison of new software. Organ doses to children of various ages are calculated for different scanner models and local protocols. These results are compared with age-adjusted protocols used today. Results: There are large variations in doses between different age groups, scanner models and local protocols. If the 1990s protocols were used on children, a one year old child may have received doses in the range of 54 (17-77) mGy to the brain, and 21 (7-31) mGy to active marrow from CT of the head. From CT of the chest, a newborn may have received doses in the range of 14 (10-21) mGy to active marrow. From CT of the abdomen 10 year old children may have received doses in the range of 10 (6-17) mGy to active marrow. These doses are considerably higher than the age-adjusted protocols used today. Conclusion: Assuming that protocols intended for adults were used, the doses children received from computed tomography during the 1990s are of such magnitude that they may find results in the EPI-CT project. Naast bescherming tegen straling zijn de ontwikkelingen in de radiotherapie de laatste tien jaar een belangrijke reden om hierover kennis te vergaren. Conventionele radiotherapie maakt gebruik van elektronen- en röntgenstraling om tumoren te bestrijden. De dosisverdeling van protonen en zware ionen is echter zodanig dat de effectiviteit van radiotherapie significant kan toenemen. Nauwkeurige bestudering van de interactie tussen complexe biomoleculen en protonen of zware ionen is daarom van cruciaal belang voor de verbetering van moderne radiotherapietechnieken. Kennis over fundamentele processen in deze kleinste bouwsteenmoleculen kan namelijk nog niet goed vertaald worden naar biologische relevantie. De experimenten werden uitgevoerd met een op het Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) ontwikkelde opstelling voor massaspectrometrische analyse met daarin geïntegreerd een elektrospray-ionisatiebron en een elektromagnetische val voor de te bestuderen molecuul-ionen. Elektrospray-ionisatie is een methode om grote biomoleculeculaire ionen, zoals DNA en eiwitten, in de gasfase te brengen zonder dat deze uit elkaar vallen. De elektromagnetische val wordt gebruikt om moleculen te verzamelen zodat de dichtheid van moleculen hoog genoeg is om een bestralingsexperiment te doen. Nadat het wolkje moleculen bestraald is, analyseerde González de inhoud van de val met behulp van vluchttijdspectrometrie.

Conclusions from radiobiological in vivo and in vitro experiments can often be employed in a straightforward way to answer questions from radiotherapy or radiation protection. However, from such studies it remains difficult, if not impossible, to obtain detailed information on the molecular mechanisms underlying biological radiation damage.About 10 years ago, a new field of research focusing on the interaction of ionizing radiation with isolated gas-phase molecules of biological interest started to flourish. The work presented in this thesis represents an experimental effort to bridge the gap between gas-phase studies and radiobiology. Pioneering studies on the action of energetic photons and keV ions of more realistic systems in the gas phase, such as oligonucleotides as well as peptides and proteins, are presented. Investigation of charge migration induced ultrafast photo-fragmentation of peptide and protein ions upon VUV and soft X-rays photo absorption was performed. For the experiments, a double tandem mass spectroscopy setup, based on the soft ionization technique of electrospray and a radiofrequency ion trap, was interfaced with synchrotron radiation sources at BESSY and MAXlab, and with the free electron laser FLASH. The results show that fragmentation patterns are dominated by ultrafast cleavage of sidechains of their amino acids. These might prevent further fragmentation on small peptides.

Dit rapport vormt de uitwerking van deelproject 2 van het project Beleidsnotitie Normstelling Straling, "Gezondheid planten, dieren en ecosystemen". Op grond van de literatuur wordt geconcludeerd dat effecten op aquatische en terrestrische populaties uitgesloten zijn beneden stralingsniveaus van 1 mGy/dag. Uit modelberekeningen blijkt dat in de praktijk geen effecten op planten, dieren en ecosystemen te verwachten zijn. Een uitzondering is mogelijk voor situaties waarin de verspreiding niet plaatsvindt in het leefmilieu van de mens ; dan is bescherming van de mens immers geen noodzaak om de stralingsniveaus te beperken. Voor de Nederlandse situatie zullen, gezien de huidige en verwachte lozingen, de in het rapport afgeleide bovengrenzen voor de stralingsniveaus zeker niet bereikt worden. Aanbevolen wordt om voor Nederland met behulp van generieke modellen schattingen te maken die op concrete situaties gebaseerd zijn. Voorts wordt aanbevolen de internationale ontwikkelingen op dit terrein te blijven volgen.

Het RIVM heeft in kaart gebracht welke maatregelen nodig zijn om slachtoffers op te vangen van incidenten met radiologisch materiaal, vanaf het rampterrein tot aan het ziekenhuis. Hierbij is onderscheid gemaakt tussen verschillende groepen slachtoffers, waarvoor specifieke maatregelen nodig zijn om gezondheidsrisico's te beperken. Vervolgens zijn de beoordeling, selectie en eerste opvang van deze slachtoffers met bijbehorende maatregelen in stroomschema's uiteengezet. De stroomschema's geven aan welke personen direct naar het ziekenhuis moeten worden vervoerd en welke na controle en zo nodig verwijdering van radioactief materiaal, bijvoorbeeld besmette kleding, (decontaminatie) naar huis kunnen. Daarnaast is er aandacht voor de mensen die niet blootgesteld zijn, maar zich wel zorgen maken. De stroomschema's kunnen tijdens een incident worden verfijnd, naargelang de aard en omvang van het incident. Het rapport is geschreven op verzoek van de Geneeskundige Hulpverlening bij Ongevallen en Rampen (GHOR), in opdracht van het ministerie van VWS. In het rapport worden de gevolgen van incidenten met een 'vuile bom' en met een verborgen radioactieve bron beschreven. Een vuile bom is een conventioneel explosief dat bij ontploffing radioactief materiaal verspreidt. Mensen in de directe omgeving kunnen door de explosie levensbedreigend gewond raken. Ook kunnen ze worden besmet door rondvliegende scherven en radioactief materiaal. Bij een incident met een verborgen (intacte) bron wordt het radioactieve materiaal niet verspreid, omdat het op een vaste plaats aanwezig is. In zulke gevallen moeten mensen die in de omgeving van de bron zijn geweest, worden opgespoord. Ook hiervoor geeft het rapport een stroomschema. Het rapport verschaft informatie om de schema's te onderbouwen. In de bijlagen is achtergrondinformatie opgenomen over radioactiviteit en ioniserende straling en de gevolgen daarvan voor de gezondheid. Daarnaast wordt verwezen naar relevante nationale en internationale richtlijnen en handboeken.

Een uitzondering is mogelijk voor situaties waarin de verspreiding niet plaatsvindt in het leefmilieu van de mens ; dan is bescherming van de mens immers geen noodzaak om de stralingsniveaus te beperken. Voor de Nederlandse situatie zullen, gezien de huidige en verwachte lozingen, de in het rapport afgeleide bovengrenzen voor de stralingsniveaus zeker niet bereikt worden. Aanbevolen wordt om voor Nederland met behulp van generieke modellen schattingen te maken die op concrete situaties gebaseerd zijn. Voorts wordt aanbevolen de internationale ontwikkelingen op dit terrein te blijven volgen.

Het RIVM heeft in kaart gebracht welke maatregelen nodig zijn om slachtoffers op te vangen van incidenten met radiologisch materiaal, vanaf het rampterrein tot aan het ziekenhuis. Hierbij is onderscheid gemaakt tussen verschillende groepen slachtoffers, waarvoor specifieke maatregelen nodig zijn om gezondheidsrisico's te beperken. Vervolgens zijn de beoordeling, selectie en eerste opvang van deze slachtoffers met bijbehorende maatregelen in stroomschema's uiteengezet. De stroomschema's geven aan welke personen direct naar het ziekenhuis moeten worden vervoerd en welke na controle en zo nodig verwijdering van radioactief materiaal, bijvoorbeeld besmette kleding, (decontaminatie) naar huis kunnen. Daarnaast is er aandacht voor de mensen die niet blootgesteld zijn, maar zich wel zorgen maken. De stroomschema's kunnen tijdens een incident worden verfijnd, naargelang de aard en omvang van het incident. Het rapport is geschreven op verzoek van de Geneeskundige Hulpverlening bij Ongevallen en Rampen (GHOR), in opdracht van het ministerie van VWS. In het rapport worden de gevolgen van incidenten met een 'vuile bom' en met een verborgen radioactieve bron beschreven. Een vuile bom is een conventioneel explosief dat bij ontploffing radioactief materiaal verspreidt. Mensen in de directe omgeving kunnen door de explosie levensbedreigend gewond raken. Ook kunnen ze worden besmet door rondvliegende scherven en radioactief materiaal. Bij een incident met een verborgen (intacte) bron wordt het radioactieve materiaal niet verspreid, omdat het op een vaste plaats aanwezig is. In zulke gevallen moeten mensen die in de omgeving van de bron zijn geweest, worden opgespoord. Ook hiervoor geeft het rapport een stroomschema. Het rapport verschaft informatie om de schema's te onderbouwen. In de bijlagen is achtergrondinformatie opgenomen over radioactiviteit en ioniserende straling en de gevolgen daarvan voor de gezondheid. Daarnaast wordt verwezen naar relevante nationale en internationale richtlijnen en handboeken.

In this thesis, the use of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) against the African malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis was explored. The SIT relies on the releases of large numbers of sterilised males. If the sterile males are successful in competing for mates and the females use their sperm for fertilisation, the wild population is reduced. Ultimately, this can lead to a reduction in disease incidence. Sterilisation of the sperm cells occurs by ionising radiation, resulting in the death of the developing embryo after fertilisation. Somatic cells are also damaged, which can lead to a reduced mating competitiveness of the males. In this thesis I investigated 1) the relationship between dose and induced sterility for pupal or adult stage irradiation, 2) sperm quantity and sperm length polymorphism and the influence of irradiation, 3) the use of stable isotopes to determine mating in mosquitoes, 4) the incidence of multiple mating in relation to irradiation, 5) the fitness of irradiated males in terms of survival and mating competitiveness, and 6) the use of a field cage for mating studies, and the small-scale feasibility of the SIT in Sudan. Results showed that even though the dose-response curves between dose and induced sterility were largely similar for pupae and adults, irradiation of adults resulted in a better competitiveness compared to pupal irradiation. A negative relationship between dose and competitiveness was observed for pupal stage irradiation. In addition, radiation during the pupal stage affected the number of spermatozoa in the testes and the distribution of sperm lengths, but no impact on the incidence of multiple mating could be observed. Stable isotopes were used successfully to determine paternity in mating. Mating competitiveness of males irradiated as pupae could be improved by a three-fold increase in their number compared to un-irradiated males, but only for the partially-sterilising dose. The small-scale irradiation and transportation of insects in Sudan was feasible, and the preparation of the field cage for experiments successful. It is concluded that from a biological viewpoint the irradiation of adults would be recommended; however, the feasibility of adult irradiation on a large scale is questionable. The next steps would be to scale up irradiation procedures to accommodate much larger numbers of insects, and to determine male competitiveness in the semi-field system in Sudan. However, many other factors including mass rearing, sexing, and release methodology, are of importance for an SIT programme and only when all components are in place can the true feasibility of the SIT in Sudan be determined.

This is the conclusion following an investigation requested by the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment in the framework of the environmental theme 'dispersion of radioactive substances and ionising radiation' to develop a radiation indicator comparable to the indicators for proprietary substances and pesticides. The most important reasons for failing to develop this indicator lie in the absence of both suitable policy targets and data for the calculations necessary for the indicator. Substituting policy targets with reference emissions, reference concentrations and reference doses would make it possible to define indicators for radiation protection. Here, environmental pressure indicators are proposed for nuclear installations and the process industry. The environmental quality indicator for radioactive substances in surface waters and suspended matter needs additional investigation. An environmental quality indicator is both possible and desirable for radium in dredged material, although no policy targets are available. However, for the time being construction of an environmental quality indicator for radon and external radiation in dwellings is impossible. Use of the population-averaged dose as an environmental effect indicator is recommended. If only one policy theme indicator for radiation is needed, the preferred choice is the environmental pressure indicator. The reference emission should be derived from the 'secondary (dose) level'. Priority is no longer given by the authorities to the optimalisation of radiation protection, defined in the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle, below this secondary level.

The dose peaks at the end of the particle's track and drops to zero beyond. In this so called Bragg peak range, where the ions have energies between zero and a few MeV, not only the deposited dose is maximum but also the relative biological effectiveness is enhanced. When ionizing radiation crosses a living cell, ionization and fragmentation of biologically relevant molecules such as water and DNA constituents occurs. These processes are the initial steps in DNA damage which in turn has the strongest biological consequences. DNA damage can have different levels of complexity leading to different biological end-points. On the molecular level ion-induced DNA damage is not yet understood. Studies on isolated gas phase molecules allow a detailed investigation of ion-induced molecular mechanisms. In this thesis, the interactions of energetic particles (He, C, H) with biologically relevant molecules (water, deoxyribose, nucleobases) and their clusters were investigated by means of high-resolution coincidence time-of-flight spectrometry. Deoxyribose molecules were found to be the most sensitive to keV ion irradiation. Energetic fragments which can induce further damage were observed in ion-induced dissociation of water molecules. In this thesis also the first step towards more realistic biological systems was taken by studying clusters. The chemical environment is indeed affecting the molecular fragmentation pathways and must be considered in future experiments.

Irradiation is a recent preservation method. With the aid of ionizing radiation microorganisms in food can be killed or specific physiological processes in vegetable products can be influenced.In order to study the effects of metabolic radiation stress on quantitative chemical changes in vegetable products, specific target compounds were investigated in stored irradiated potatoes. These target compounds, i.e. glycoalkaloids and phenolic compounds were choosen with a view to food toxicology and food sensoric quality.Much attention has been spent on quantitative analyses of the pre-selected target compounds in the potato samples. Enzymic changes of the polyphenolic compounds were kept to a minimum by the direct freezing of potato slices in liquid nitrogen, freeze-drying and extraction by boiling in 80% ethanol.A quantitative assay for solanidine potato glycoalkaloids was developed from a pre-existing method with minor changes, by which the rapidity of the assay is improved, without affecting its sensitivity. As a specific application, this method was used for the analysis of solanidine glycoalkaloids in industrial potato protein. Because of objections to the colour assays for glycoalkaloids, concerning their specificity (Fitzpatrick & Osman, 1974; Coxon et al., 1979), these quantitative reactions were investigated.Quantitative analyses of phenolics and coumarins were done, starting from the alcoholic extracts. Qualitative data were obtained by analysis of UV spectra and fluorescence of diluted extracts and TLC chromatography on cellulose plates. For quantitative analyses a method was developed by HPLC chromatography of alcoholic extracts. Evidence with respect to identification of scopolin and scopoletin in the alcoholic extracts was obtained by comparison of extracts with and without enzymic hydrolysis with B-glycosidase. Scopoletin was also directly identified by UV, IR and Mass Spectra.Results of glycoalkaloids, analyzed over several seasons, show no significant changes with regard to irradiation dose or storage time. On the other hand a change in phenolic compounds and coumarins was observed.A 10 to 30 fold accumulation of scopolin was found in irradiated (3 kGy) potatoes of the Eba variety after approx. one month's storage at 10 °C, 90% RH and also a decrease in the chlorogenic acid content. For irradiated (3 kGy) potatoes of the Bintje variety, the increase in fluorescent compounds was smaller. Several unidentified phenolic compounds increase in 3 kGy irradiated Eba potatoes, which were detected by UV absorbance at 310 nm.Chemical analyses of samples of irradiated Eba potatoes indicate a dose threshold for accumulation of fluorescent compounds. Below 0.5 kGy no increase is observed.By using the high fluorescence of the accumulated coumarins it was possible to detect accumulation of fluorescent compounds by simply examining potato halves under long wave UV light. The results agree with the chemical analyses of extracts of irradiated potatoes of the Eba and Bintje varieties. In this way potatoes of several varieties irradiated with a dose of 3 kGy and stored for at least 2 weeks at 10 °C could be examined. The results indicate pronounced differences between varieties. Further, a threshold for the accumulation of fluorescent compounds in irradiated Eba potatoes could be determined. In Eba potatoes irradiated above 0.5 kGy accumulation of fluorescent compounds could be seen. By fluorescence microscopy of sections of tubers it was observed that specific cells accumulate fluorescent coumarins. Examination of the fluorescent cells after plasmolysis, indicates a vacuolar origin of these compounds. Similar results have been reported for fungal infected potatoes (Clarke, 1973; Clarke & Baines, 1976). The increase in scopoletin can be explained by the increase in phenyl ammonia lyase, which has been shown to increase in irradiated citrus fruits (Riov et al., 1972) and irradiated potatoes (Pendharkar & Nair, 1975).In view of conflicting earlier reports of increases in mutagenic compounds in alcoholic extracts of irradited potatoes, glycoalkaloids and phenolic compounds as well as the alcoholic extracts of irradiated and control potatoes were examined using a bacterial mutagenicity test system. No increased mutagenicity of extracts or reference compounds were found. These results aqree with the negative findings of Levinsky & Wilson (1975) for mutagenic evaluation of extracts of irradiated potatoes and mutagenicity studies on irradiated potatoes and chlorogenic acid by Hossain et al. (1976).Radiation-induced increase in coumarins is to be expected primarily in vegetable products having a natural coumarin content. Chemical changes as a result of radiolytic processes in a theoretical foodstuff can be estimated. Diehl & Schertz (1975) calculated 55 mg/kg radiolytic decomposition products for a 5 kGy dose. In comparison, in this study an increase in scopolin content from 2 to 60 mg/kg was found in 3 kGy irradiated Eba potatoes after a month's storage at 10 °C caused by metabolic stress.
