We employ polymer integral equation theory to study a simplified model of semiflexible polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) that interact via hard core repulsions and short range screened Coulomb interactions. The multi-scale structure in real and Fourier space of PolyILs (ions chosen to mimic Li, Na, K, Br, PF6, and TFSI) are determined as a function of melt density, Coulomb interaction strength, and ion size. Comparisons with a homopolymer melt, a neutral polymer–solvent-like athermal mixture, and an atomic ionic liquid are carried out to elucidate the distinct manner that ions mediate changes of polymer packing, the role of excluded volume effects, and the influence of chain connectivity, respectively. The effect of Coulomb strength depends in a rich manner on ion size and density, reflecting the interplay of steric packing, ion adsorption, and charge layering. Ion-mediated bridging of monomers is found, which intensifies for larger ions. Intermediate range charge layering correlations are characterized by a many-body screening length that grows with PolyIL density, cooling, and Coulomb strength, in disagreement with Debye–Hückel theory, but in accord with experiments. Qualitative differences in the collective structure, including an ion-size-dependent bifurcation of the polymer structure factor peak and pair correlation function, are predicted. The monomer cage order parameter increases significantly, but its collective ion counterpart decreases, as ions become smaller. Such behaviors allow one to categorize PolyILs into two broad classes of small and large ions. Dynamical implications of the predicted structural results are qualitatively discussed. A non-polarizable force field for lithium (Li+) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI−) ions solvated in diglyme at around 0.2 mol fraction salt concentration was developed based on ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and a modified polymer consistent force field model. A force–torque matching based scheme, in conjunction with a genetic algorithm, was used to determine the Lennard-Jones (LJ) parameters of the ion–ion and ion–solvent interactions. This force field includes a partial charge scaling factor and a scaling factor for the 1–4 interactions. The resulting force field successfully reproduces the radial distribution function of the AIMD simulations and shows better agreement compared to the unmodified force field. The new force field was then used to simulate salt solutions with glymes of increasing chain lengths and different salt concentrations. The comparison of the MD simulations, using the new force field, with experimental data at different salt concentrations and AIMD simulations on equimolar concentrations of the triglyme system demonstrates the transferability of the force field parameters to longer glymes and higher salt concentrations. Furthermore, the force field appears to reproduce the features of the experimental x-ray structure factors, suggesting accuracy beyond the first solvation shell, for equimolar salt solutions using both triglyme and tetraglyme as the solvent. Overall, the new force field was found to accurately reproduce the molecular descriptions of LiTFSI-glyme systems not only at various salt concentrations but also with glymes of different chain lengths. We have used surface plasmon resonant metal gratings to induce and probe the dielectric response (i.e., electro-optic modulation) of ionic liquids (ILs) at electrode interfaces. Here, the cross-plane electric field at the electrode surface modulates the refractive index of the IL due to the Pockels effect. This is observed as a shift in the resonant angle of the grating (i.e., Δϕ), which can be related to the change in the local index of refraction of the electrolyte (i.e., Δnlocal). The reflection modulation of the IL is compared against a polar (D2O) and a non-polar solvent (benzene) to confirm the electro-optic origin of resonance shift. The electrostatic accumulation of ions from the IL induces local index changes to the gratings over the extent of electrical double layer (EDL) thickness. Finite difference time domain simulations are used to relate the observed shifts in the plasmon resonance and change in reflection to the change in the local index of refraction of the electrolyte and the thickness of the EDL. Simultaneously using the wavelength and intensity shift of the resonance enables us to determine both the effective thickness and Δn of the double layer. We believe that this technique can be used more broadly, allowing the dynamics associated with the potential-induced ordering and rearrangement of ionic species in electrode–solution interfaces. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are molten salts consisting entirely of ions and have over the past decades gained increased interest due to their high potential in applications. These structurally complex systems often display multiple relaxation modes in the response functions at lower frequencies, hinting to complex underlying mechanisms. While the existence of these multimodal spectra in the shear mechanical, dielectric, and light scattering response of RTILs has been confirmed multiple times, controversy still surrounds the origin. This paper, therefore, aims to provide additional insights into the multimodal spectra seen in RTILs by presenting new shear mechanical results on seven different RTILs: Pyr1n-TFSI with n = 4, 6, and 8; Pyr18-TFSI mixed with Li-TFSI in two high concentrations; and Cn-mim-BF4 with n = 3 and 8. Dynamic depolarized light scattering was also measured on one of the Pyr18-TFSI Li-salt mixtures. These specific cases were analyzed in detail and put into a bigger perspective together with an overview of the literature. Recent literature offers two specific explanations for the origin of the multimodal shear mechanical spectra: (1) cation–anion time scale separation or (2) combined cation–anion relaxation in addition to a dynamic signal from mesoscale aggregates at lower frequencies. However, neither of these two pictures can consistently explain all the results on different ionic liquids. Instead, we conclude that the origin of the multimodal spectrum is system specific. Ionic liquid electrospray thrusters represent an alternative propulsion method for spacecraft to conventional plasma propulsion because they do not require plasma generation, which significantly increases the thrust efficiency. The porous emitter thruster has the advantages of simple propellant feeding and multi-site emissions, which miniaturize the thruster size and increase thrust. However, the multi-scale nature, that is, nano- to micrometer-sized menisci on the millimeter-size porous needle tip, makes modeling multi-site emissions difficult, and direct observation is also challenging. This paper proposes a simple model for multi-site emissions, which assumes that the ionic conductivity or ion transport in the porous media determines the ion-emission current. The conductivity was evaluated by comparing the experimental and numerical data based on the model. The results suggest that the ionic conductivity of the porous emitter is suppressed by the ion–pore wall friction stress. Additionally, the model indicates that the emission area expansion on the porous emitter creates the unique curve shape of the current vs voltage characteristics for multi-site emissions. Redox potentials depend on the nature of the solvent/electrolyte through the solvation energies of the ionic solute species. For concentrated electrolytes, ion solvation may deviate significantly from the Born model predictions due to ion pairing and correlation effects. Recently, Ghorai and Matyushov [J. Phys. Chem. B 124, 3754–3769 (2020)] predicted, on the basis of linear response theory, an anomalous trend in the solvation energies of room temperature ionic liquids, with deviations of hundreds of kJ/mol from the Born model for certain size solutes/ions. In this work, we computationally evaluate ionic solvation energies in the prototypical ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM/BF4), to further explore this behavior and benchmark several of the approximations utilized in the solvation energy predictions. For comparison, we additionally compute solvation energies within acetonitrile and molten NaCl salt to illustrate the limiting behavior of purely dipolar and ionic solvents. We find that the overscreening effect, which results from the inherent charge oscillations of the ionic liquid, is substantially reduced in magnitude due to screening from the dipoles of the molecular ions. Therefore, for the molten NaCl salt, for which the ions do not have permanent dipoles, modulation of ionic solvation energies from the overscreening effect is most significant. The conclusion is that ionic liquids do indeed exhibit unique solvation behavior due to peak(s) in the electrical susceptibility caused by the ion shell structure; redox potential shifts for BMIM/BF4 are of more modest order ∼0.1 V, but may be larger for other ionic liquids that approach molten salt behavior. Crystal polymorphism of complex liquids plays a crucial role in industrial crystallization, food technology, pharmaceuticals, and materials engineering. However, the experimental identification of unknown crystal structures can be challenging, particularly for high-viscosity complex liquids, such as ionic liquids (ILs). In this study, we performed a molecular dynamics simulation coupled with metadynamics to investigate an imidazolium IL (1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphates). The simulation employed two distinct radial-distribution functions, represented by Gaussian window functions as collective variables, and revealed at least two crystal-like phases distinct from the known α and β crystal phases typically formed by this IL. Additionally, the simulation unveiled a unique phase characterized by the ordered spatial arrangement of anion aggregations. These crystal-like and unique phases emerged regardless of the potential used. The simulation methodology presented here is broadly applicable for exploring unknown phases in complex systems and contributes to the design of functional materials, such as porous ILs for gas molecule capture and separation. In this work, we propose and validate a generalization of the Helmholtz model that can account for both "bell-shaped" and "camel-shaped" differential capacitance profiles of concentrated electrolytes, the latter being characteristic of ionic liquids. The generalization is based on introducing voltage dependence of both the dielectric constant "ϵr(V)" and thickness "L(V)" of the inner Helmholtz layer, as validated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We utilize MD simulations to study the capacitance profiles of three different electrochemical interfaces: (1) graphite/[BMIm+][ BF 4 − ] ionic liquid interface; (2) Au(100)/[BMIm+][ BF 4 − ] ionic liquid interface; (3) Au(100)/1M [Na+][Cl−] aqueous interface. We compute the voltage dependence of ϵr(V) and L(V) and demonstrate that the generalized Helmholtz model qualitatively describes both camel-shaped and bell-shaped differential capacitance profiles of ionic liquids and concentrated aqueous electrolytes (in lieu of specific ion adsorption). In particular, the camel-shaped capacitance profile that is characteristic of ionic liquid electrolytes arises simply from combination of the voltage-dependent trends of ϵr(V) and L(V). Furthermore, explicit analysis of the inner layer charge density for both concentrated aqueous and ionic liquid double layers reveal similarities, with these charge distributions typically exhibiting a dipolar region closest to the electrode followed by a monopolar peak at larger distances. It is appealing that a generalized Helmholtz model can provide a unified description of the inner layer structure and capacitance profile for seemingly disparate aqueous and ionic liquid electrolytes. This work employs a combination of density functional theory-infrared (IR), conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS), and molecular dynamic (MD) methods to investigate the impact of hydroxyl functional groups on CO2 capture within dicationic ionic liquids (DILs). The COSMO-RS reveals that hydroxyl groups in DILs reduce the macroscopic solubility of CO2 but improve the selectivity of CO2 over CO, H2, and CH4 gases. Quantum methods in the gas phase and MD simulations in the liquid phase were conducted to delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms. The IR spectrum analysis confirms red shifts in CO2's asymmetric stretching mode and blue shifts in the CR–HR bond of the dication, indicating CO2–DIL interactions and the weakening of the anion–cation interactions caused by the presence of CO2. The results show that the positioning of anions around hydroxyl groups and HR atoms in rings inhibits the proximity of CO2 molecules, causing the hydrogen atoms within methylene groups to accumulate CO2. van der Waals forces were found to dominate the interaction between ions and CO2. The addition of hydroxyl groups strengthens the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between dications and anions. The stronger interaction energy between ions in [C5(mim)2-(C2)2(OH)2][NTf2]2 limits the displacement of CO2 molecules within this DIL compared to [C5(mim)2-(C4)2][NTf2]2. Compared to [C5(mim)2-(C4)2][NTf2]2, [C5(mim)2-(C2)2(OH)2][NTf2]2 exhibits stronger ion–ion interactions, higher density, and reduced free volume, resulting in a reduction in CO2 capture. These results provide significant insights into the intermolecular interactions and vibrational properties of CO2 in DIL complexes, emphasizing their significance in developing efficient and sustainable strategies for CO2 capture. Visualizing the network of a solvent-swollen polymer gel remains problematic. To address this challenge, open transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was applied to thin gel films permeated by a nonvolatile ionic liquid. The targeted physical gels were prepared by cooling concentrated solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) in 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium ethyl sulfate [EMIM][EtSO4]. During the cooling, gelation occurred by a frustrated crystallization of the dissolved polymer, leading to a percolated, solvent-permeated semicrystalline network in which nanoscale polymer crystals acted as crosslinks. Crystalline features ranging from ~5 to ~200 nm were observed, with the visible network strands dominantly consisting of long curvilinear crystallites of ~15–20 nm diameter. Nascent spherulites irregularly decorated the network, creating a complex structural hierarchy that complicated analyses. Lacking diffraction contrast, TEM did not visualize the many disordered, fully solvated PEG chains present in the voids between crystals. Recognizing that a network's three dimensionality is ambiguous when assessed through two-dimensional microscopy projections, a small gel region was studied by TEM tomography, revealing a nearly isotropic three-dimensional arrangement of the curvilinear crystallites, which displayed remarkably uniform cylindrical cross sections.

Experimental and theoretical advances for understanding the temperature of maximum density (TMD) of aqueous solutions are outlined. The main equations that relate the TMD behavior to key thermodynamic properties are stated. The experimental TMD data are classified as a function of the nature of the solute (inorganic electrolytes, non-electrolytes, organic salts and ionic liquids, and amino acids and proteins). In addition, the experimental results that explore the effect of pressure are detailed. These experimental data are rationalized by making use of qualitative and semi-quantitative arguments based on the thermodynamics of aqueous systems. The main theoretical and simulation advances in TMD for aqueous solutions are also shown—including new calculations in the context of the scaled particle theory—and their ability to reproduce the experimental data is evaluated. Finally, new experiments and theoretical and simulation developments, which could give important insights into the problem of TMD for aqueous solutions, are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study a united-atom model of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl)sulfonylamide to determine to what extent there exist curves in the phase diagram along which the microscopic dynamics are invariant when expressed in dimensionless, or reduced, form. The initial identification of these curves, termed isodynes, is made by noting that contours of reduced shear viscosity and reduced self-diffusion coefficient coincide to a good approximation. Choosing specifically the contours of reduced viscosity as nominal isodynes, further simulations were carried out for state points on these, and other aspects of dynamics were investigated to study their degree of invariance. These include the mean-squared displacement, shear-stress autocorrelation function, and various rotational correlation functions. These were invariant to a good approximation, with the main exception being rotations of the anion about its long axis. The dynamical features that are invariant have in common that they are aspects that would be relevant for a coarse-grained description of the system; specifically, removing the most microscopic degrees of freedom in principle leads to a simplification of the potential energy landscape, which allows for the existence of isodynes. Recent experimental results have demonstrated that zwitterionic ionogel comprised of polyzwitterion (polyZI)-supported lithium salt-doped ionic liquid exhibits improved conductivities and lithium transference numbers than the salt-doped base ionic liquid electrolyte (ILE). However, the underlying mechanisms of such observations remain unresolved. In this work, we pursued a systematic investigation to understand the impact of the polyZI content and salt concentration on the structural and dynamic properties of the poly(MPC) ionogel of our model polyZI ionogel, poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) [poly(MPC)] supported LiTFSI/N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium TFSI base ionic liquid electrolyte. Our structural analyses show strong lithium–ZI interaction consistent with the physical network characteristic observed in the experiments. An increase in polyZI content leads to an increased fraction of Li+ ions coordinated with the polyZI. In contrast, an increase in salt concentration leads to a decreased fraction of Li+ ions coordinated with the polyZI. The diffusivities of the mobile ions in the poly(MPC) ionogel were found to be lower than the base ILE in agreement with experiments at T > 300 K. Analysis of ion transport mechanisms shows that lithium ions within the poly(MPC) ionogel travel via a combination of structural, vehicular diffusion, as well as hopping mechanism. Finally, the conductivity trend crossover between the poly(MPC) ionogel and the base ILE was rationalized via a temperature study that showed that the base ILE ions are influenced more by the variation of temperature when compared to the poly(MPC) ions. Monoolein-based liquid crystal phases are established media that are researched for various biological applications, including drug delivery. While water is the most common solvent for self-assembly, some ionic liquids (ILs) can support lipidic self-assembly. However, currently, there is limited knowledge of IL-lipid phase behavior in ILs. In this study, the lyotropic liquid crystal phase behavior of monoolein was investigated in six protic ILs known to support amphiphile self-assembly, namely ethylammonium nitrate, ethanolammonium nitrate, ethylammonium formate, ethanolammonium formate, ethylammonium acetate, and ethanolammonium acetate. These ILs were selected to identify specific ion effects on monoolein self-assembly, specifically increasing the alkyl chain length of the cation or anion, the presence of a hydroxyl group in the cation, and varying the anion. The lyotropic liquid crystal phases with 20–80 wt. % of monoolein were characterized over a temperature range from 25 to 65 °C using synchrotron small angle x-ray scattering and cross-polarized optical microscopy. These results were used to construct partial phase diagrams of monoolein in each of the six protic ILs, with inverse hexagonal, bicontinuous cubic, and lamellar phases observed. Protic ILs containing the ethylammonium cation led to monoolein forming lamellar and bicontinuous cubic phases, while those containing the ethanolammonium cation formed inverse hexagonal and bicontinuous cubic phases. Protic ILs containing formate and acetate anions favored bicontinuous cubic phases across a broader range of protic IL concentrations than those containing the nitrate anion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, we reported the discovery of a novel endoglucanase of the glycoside hydrolase family 12 (GH12), designated IfCelS12A, from the haloalkaliphilic anaerobic bacterium Iocasia fonsfrigidae strain SP3-1, which was isolated from a hypersaline pond in the Samut Sakhon province of Thailand (ca. 2017). IfCelS12A exhibits high substrate specificity on carboxymethyl cellulose and amorphous cellulose but low substrate specificity on b-1,3;1,4-glucan. Unlike some endoglucanases of the GH12 family, IfCelS12A does not exhibit hydrolytic activity on crystalline cellulose (i.e., Avicel™). High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analyses of products resulting from IfCelS12-mediated hydrolysis indicate mode of action for this enzyme. Notably, IfCelS12A preferentially hydrolyzes cellotetraoses, cellopentaoses, and cellohexaoses with negligible activity on cellobiose or cellotriose. Kinetic analysis with cellopentaose and barely b-D-glucan as cellulosic substrates were conducted. On cellopentaose, IfCelS12A demonstrates a 16-fold increase in activity (KM = 0.27 mM; kcat = 0.36 s-1; kcat/KM = 1.34 mM-1 s-1) compared to the enzymatic hydrolysis of barley b-D-glucan (KM: 0.04 mM, kcat: 0.51 s-1, kcat/KM = 0.08 mM-1 s-1). Moreover, IfCelS12A enzymatic efficacy is stable in hypersaline sodium chlorids (NaCl) solutions (up to 10% NaCl). Specifically, IfCel12A retains notable activity after 24 h at 2M NaCl (10% saline solution). IfCelS12A used as a cocktail component with other cellulolytic enzymes and in conjunction with mobile sequestration platform technology offers additional options for deconstruction of ionic liquid-pretreated cellulosic feedstock. In this study, we extended the optimized potentials for liquid simulation-ionic-liquid virtual site (OPLS-VSIL) force field (FF) to imidazolium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) and evaluated the ability of different OPLS-based FFs (i.e., OPLS-2009IL, 0.8*OPLS-2009IL, and OPLS-VSIL) in predicting different properties of the studied DIL by comparing their results with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation and experimental results. To achieve this purpose, MD simulations with three different OPLS-based FFs as well as AIMD simulation were performed for [C3(mim)2][NTF2]2 DIL and its structural, dynamical, vibrational, and volumetric properties were analyzed. Structural properties of the studied DIL, i.e., radial distribution functions (RDFs), structure factor, and hydrogen-bond network, showed that compared to 0.8*OPLS-2009IL FF, there is a much better agreement between the results of both OPLS-2009IL and OPLS-VSIL FFs with the AIMD simulation. On the other hand, the results of dynamical properties, such as mean square displacements, van Hove correlation functions as well as hydrogen bond, ion pair, and ion cage dynamics, depicted that in both 0.8*OPLS-2009IL and OPLS-VSIL FFs, the dynamics of the system is almost similar, and compared to OPLS-2009IL FF, they have better agreements with experimental results where they exist. So, it can be seen that although reducing the total charge of studied DIL by 20% leads to an increase in the dynamics of the system, the type distribution of partial charges on each atom does not significantly affect the system's dynamics. The calculated infrared (IR) and power spectra showed that the vibrational features of studied DIL in three OPLS-based FFs are mostly the same and reducing total charge and different type distribution of partial charges have no significant effect on the studied system. Furthermore, in volumetric properties, OPLS-VSIL FF shows somehow better agreement with experimental results. Overall, the evaluation of different structural, dynamical, vibrational, and volumetric properties of [C3(mim)2][NTF2]2 DIL shows that the OPLS-VSIL FF may be the best choice among the different studied OPLS FFs. Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs) with ionic liquid electrolytes outperform conventional ones using aqueous and organic electrolytes in energy density and safety. However, understanding the electrochemical behaviors of ionic liquid electrolytes under compressive/tensile strain is essential for the design of flexible EDLCs as well as normal EDLCs, which are subject to external forces during assembly. Despite many experimental studies, the compression/stretching effects on the performance of ionic liquid EDLCs remain inconclusive and controversial. In addition, there is hardly any evidence of prior theoretical work done in this area, which makes the literature on this topic scarce. Herein, for the first time, we developed an atomistic model to study the processes underlying the electrochemical behaviors of ionic liquids in an EDLC under strain. Constant potential non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are conducted for EMIM BF4 placed between two graphene walls as electrodes. Compared to zero strain, low compression of the EDLC resulted in compromised performance as the electrode charge density dropped by 29%, and the performance reduction deteriorated significantly with a further increase in compression. In contrast, stretching is found to enhance the performance by increasing the charge storage in the electrodes by 7%. The performance changes with compression and stretching are due to changes in the double-layer structure. In addition, an increase in the value of the applied potential during the application of strain leads to capacity retention with compression revealed by the newly performed simulations. We present a strategic approach for enhancing the ionic conductivity of block copolymer electrolytes. This was achieved by introducing mixed ionic liquids (ILs) with varying molar ratios, wherein the imidazolium cation was paired with either tetrafluoroborate (BF4) anion or bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion. Two polymer matrices, poly(4-styrenesulfonate)-b-polymethylbutylene (SSMB) and poly(4-styrenesulfonyl (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide)-b-polymethylbutylene (STMB), were synthesized for this purpose. All the SSMB and STMB containing mixed ILs showed hexagonal cylindrical structures, but the type of tethered acid group significantly influenced the interfacial properties. STMB electrolytes demonstrated enhanced segregation strength, which was attributed to strengthened Coulomb and hydrogen bonding interactions in the ionic domains, where the ILs were uniformly distributed. In contrast, the SSMB electrolytes exhibited increased concentration fluctuations because the BF4 anions were selectively sequestered at the block interfaces. This resulted in the effective confinement of imidazolium TFSI along the ionic domains, thereby preventing ion trapping in dead zones and facilitating rapid ion diffusion. Consequently, the SSMB electrolytes with mixed ILs demonstrated significantly improved ionic conductivities, surpassing the expected values based on the arithmetic average of the conductivities of each IL, whereas the ionic conductivity of the STMB was aligned with the expected average. Highly acidic protic ionic liquids (PILs) are promising materials for potential electrochemical applications due to their high proton conductivity and excellent thermal stability. Still, little is known about the correlation between charge transport and structural dynamics as well as the proton transport mechanism despite the large body of literature on this topic. Here, we have examined the charge transport and structural dynamics by employing broadband dielectric spectroscopy in two highly acidic PILs in their supercooled liquid and glassy states, which included the same anion [TfO]− and different cations, [Tau]+ vs [Ahs]+. Unlike many other ionic liquids, the conductivity relaxation time τe of two studied PILs is substantially faster than the structural relaxation time τα. The decoupling behavior between charge transport and structural dynamics of two materials, which is manifested by a decoupling index Rτ, varies between 0.3 and 2.3 over the temperature range above Tg. Moreover, "Walden" plots of the molar conductivity vs the viscosity qualify both compounds as "Super ILs." All findings support the physical picture of large, polar, and orientationally correlated ion clusters, where the slow α-relaxation can be identified as structural relaxation associated with cooperative reorientations of the cluster macrodipole. In contrast, the shortest timescale for diffusive charge transport, τe, is 1–2 decades shorter than τα, implying that proton hopping is triggered by "single particle" (ions or ion pair) rotations and jumps on a sub-length scale of the cluster size, a dynamics being present even in the glassy state as indicated by a strong β-relaxation. Due to the importance of supercapacitors in electronic storage devices, improving their efficiency is one of the topics that has attracted the attention of many researchers. Choosing the proper electrolyte for supercapacitors is one of the most significant factors affecting supercapacitors' performance. In the present paper, we compare liquid electrolytes (ionic liquid electrolytes) and solid electrolytes (polymer electrolytes) by molecular dynamics simulation to summarize their pros and cons. We consider polymer electrolytes in linear and network configurations. The results show that although ionic liquid-based supercapacitors have a larger differential capacitance since they have a smaller operation voltage, the energy stored is less than polymer electrolyte-based supercapacitors. Also, our investigations indicate that polymer electrolyte-based supercapacitors have more mechanical stability. Therefore, they can be considered a very suitable alternative to liquid electrolyte-based supercapacitors since they do not have known liquid electrolyte problems and display better performance. The use of ionic liquids (ILs) as lubricants or additives has been studied extensively over the past few decades. However, the ILs considered for lubricant applications have been part of a limited structural class of phosphonium- or imidazolium-type compounds. Here, new pyrylium- and pyridinium-based ILs bearing long alkyl chains were prepared and evaluated as friction- and wear-reducing additives in naphthenic greases. The physical properties of the synthetic ILs and additized naphthenic grease were measured. The tribological performance of the greases was measured by using standard benchtop tests. The addition of ILs was detrimental to wear, causing an increase in the amount of material removed by sliding relative to the base greases in most cases. In contrast, the friction performance improved under nearly all conditions tested due to the IL additives. The compatibility of the synthetic ILs with the naphthenic greases and its potential influence upon miscibility and tribological performance are tentatively proposed to be a result of the molecular structure.

Compared to aqueous ions, ionic liquids (ILs) consist entirely of cations and anions, and they function in energy conversion and storage owing to unique properties. Classical electric double layer (EDL) theory born a century ago gives essential insights into aqueous interfaces, whereas it fails in ILs due to overlooking ionic geometries and interactions, leaving a theoretical gap in describing IL interfaces. This study captures IL fingerprints by combining nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, quantum chemistry investigations, and first‐principles molecular simulations. Based on these findings, an EDL theory is proposed to reflect hierarchical aggregation structure and anisotropic dynamics for interfacial ILs. It involves four elements including ion geometries, ion–ion interactions, ion–wall interactions, and temperature and interfacial electric field effects. Specifically, polyatomic ions with nonuniform shapes are cornerstones for successive elements. Cation–anion non‐oxygen hydrogen bonds and cation–cation π+–π+ stacking generate bound clusters. Ion–wall adsorption causes hierarchical aggregation patterns, and cation–wall parallel stacking creates anisotropic dynamics at interfaces. Moreover, the thermal‐weakened ionic interactions and electric field‐enhanced interfacial electron transfer alter the aggregation states and dynamic properties of interfacial ILs. Pure organic films consisting of polypyrrole, polyaniline and a composite of polypyrrole and polyaniline electrodeposited in the ionic liquid EMIM‐TFSI onto mesoporous carbon electrodes are tested for their hydrogen evolution reaction capabilities. The use of these intrinsically conducting polymers is seen as a way of stepping away from expensive and rare metallic catalysts. Co‐polymerisation of polypyrrole and polyaniline in a 1 : 10 ratio in EMIM‐TFSI was found to be doped with the TFSI− anion and be much more active to the hydrogen evolution reaction when compared to pure polymers. Tafel analysis of the composite gave a value of 144 mV/dec indicating that the Volmer step is the rate limiting step. In this research, we first fabricated Fe3O4@Dop-Triazine-CuCl2 nanocatalyst by simple method, then its catalytic activity was investigated in the preparation of various derivatives of aryl-heteroaryl and di-heteroaryl selenides through C–Se coupling reactions of aryl iodides with powder selenium and various derivatives of heterocyclic compounds (with active C–H bonds). The catalyst exhibited spherical morphology with a diameter of approximately 20–30 nm and a magnetic saturation moment of 50.032 emu/g. The hydrocarbon content was measured to be around 12% by weight. In this method, a wide range of aryl-heteroaryl and di-heteroaryl selenides (36 examples) were synthesized with high yields (85–97%) using catalytic amount of the Fe3O4@Dop-Triazine-CuCl2 nanomaterial in the presence of KHCO3 in [BMIM]PF6 as solvent. This method has several remarkable features, which can be mentioned as follows: the synthesis of aryl-heteroaryl and di-heteroaryl selenide derivatives with high yields, performing the reactions in a suitable time (4 h), the applicability of this catalytic system for a wide range of substrates, the use of ionic liquid as solvent, high efficiency of Fe3O4@Dop-Triazine-CuCl2 catalyst, simple separation and high reusability of nanocatalyst. Porous liquids (PLs) represent a new frontier in material design combining the merits of solid porous host and liquid phase in gas separation and catalysis. Herein, the PL construction approach is harnessed to tailor the gating effect of organic cages toward enhanced gas separation. A type‐II fluorinated PL (F‐PL) is developed via liquifying a fluorinated organic cage (F‐cage) by a fluorinated ionic liquid (F‐IL). The F‐cage is featured by a small window size (≈5.1 Å), high surface area, good stability under highly ionic conditions, and abundant fluorine moieties. The F‐IL possesses high steric hindrance (bulky cation) and structure similarity with the F‐cage (fluorinated alkyl chain in the anion). The existing status structure integrity of F‐cage in F‐IL upon F‐PL formation is illustrated via spectroscopy and X‐ray‐based techniques. The existence of rigid voids in F‐PL is illustrated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and the improved gas uptake capacity than F‐IL via pressure‐swing CO2 uptake isotherms (0−40) bar. The comparison of the gas uptake behavior (CO2, N2, CH4, and Xe) of F‐PL and F‐cage, combining the computational simulation, highlights that the PL construction can be leveraged to tune the window size of porous scaffolds, leading to enhanced gas selectivity. Ionic liquids have been studied as CO2 capture agents. However, they are rarely used in combined CO2 capture and conversion processes. Utilizing imidazolium‐based ionic liquids, the conversion of CO2 to methanol was greatly improved in polyamine assisted systems catalyzed by homogeneous pincer catalysts with Ru and Mn metal centers. Among the ionic liquids tested, [BMIM]OAc was found to perform the best under the given reaction conditions. Among the polyamine tested, pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) led to the highest conversion rates. Ru‐Macho and Ru‐Macho‐BH were the most active catalysts. Due to their numerous properties as an advanced or specialized material, ionic liquids (ILs) have found an increasingly wide utilization in many fields. Moreover, mixtures of ILs can further improve their correlative properties. Therefore, it is significant that the thermal stability and exothermic behaviour of IL binary mixtures were studied. In this work, two typical representative imidazole ILs ([BMIM]BF4 and BMIM[NO3]) were selected, and their binary mixture thermal stability and thermal decomposition process of visualization were investigated by simultaneous thermogravimetric analyser (STA). Furthermore, their binary mixture exothermic behaviour and decomposition products were obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), respectively. The compound mode of imidazolium-based IL binary mixtures was divided into three categories: the molar fraction (7:3, 1:1, and 3:7) of parent pure ILs. We found that TG curves trend of IL binary mixtures was consistent with their parent pure ILs. Compared with TG curves, DSC curves of IL mixtures demonstrated that the behaviours of heat absorption and heat release at greater than 700.0 K in mixtures were different from their parent pure ILs. According to the infrared spectrum of gas products, the oxygen-containing functional group in BMIM[NO3] is likely to have some influence on the second-stage decomposition of sample 1#. Systematic thermal analysis results provided a significant reference for the exothermic behaviours and thermal degradation process of imidazolium-based ionic liquid binary mixture and a feasible research route for further investigations into the thermal decomposition characteristics of IL mixtures. Layer‐stacking behaviors are crucial for two‐dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) to define their pore structure, physicochemical properties, and functional output. So far, fine control over the stacking mode without complex procedures remains a grand challenge. Herein, we proposed a "key‐cylinder lock mimic" strategy to synthesize 2D COFs with a tunable layer‐stacking mode by taking advantage of ionic liquids (ILs). The staggered (AB) stacking (unlocked) COFs were exclusively obtained by incorporating ILs of symmetric polarity and matching molecular size; otherwise, commonly reported eclipsed (AA) stacking (locked) COFs were observed instead. Mechanistic study revealed that AB stacking was induced by a confined interlocking effect (CIE) brought by anions and bulky cations of the ILs inside pores ("key" and "cylinder", respectively). Excitingly, this strategy can speed up production rate of crystalline powders (e.g. COF‐TAPT‐Tf@BmimTf2N in merely 30 minutes) under mild reaction conditions. Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used in various fields due to their excellent properties. Despite their utility, there is limited knowledge regarding the phytotoxic properties of ILs and the mechanisms by which plants develop resistance to them. This is particularly true when considering the role of nitric oxide (NO) in response to ILs stress. Herein, we investigated the mechanism by which endogenous NO reduces the ILs’ phytotoxicity in Arabidopsis from the perspective of rhizosphere microorganisms. We investigated the impact of 1,3-dibutyl imidazole bromide (DIB) on microbial diversity and community in the rhizosphere of Arabidopsis lines with varying endogenous NO levels, using a high throughput sequencing method. DIB did not affect microbial taxon numbers, richness, or evenness; however, it did alter microbial beta diversity and community structure in the rhizosphere of Arabidopsis. Elevated endogenous NO increased fungal richness and evenness, shifted DIB’s impact on microbial community structure, and enriched more resistant species and toxin-decomposing species. These findings suggest a potential mechanism for plants to resist IL stress. Our study not only elucidates the toxicological mechanisms of ILs but also reveals the involvement of NO in plant responses to IL stress, providing valuable insights for future environmental risk assessments and mitigation strategies. [Display omitted] Potassium metal batteries (PMBs) show great potential as next-generation energy storage systems yet face challenges such as the dendritic growth of the potassium anode, leading to issues with cycle life and safety. This study reports a potassium salt-concentrated ionic liquid electrolyte (PCIL) consisting of potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) and 1-methyl-1-propyl pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (Pyr13FSI) to achieve long-life and, safe PMBs. PCIL presents several advantages including outstanding oxidation stability (≈ 5.2 V), decent ionic conductivity (4.0 mS cm−1 at 25 °C), and negligible flammability. Moreover, PCIL promotes the development of anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) with high inorganic content. This not only hinders the growth of potassium dendrites but also facilitates facile interfacial charge transfer kinetics. Benefiting from these advantages, PMBs (K||KVPO 4 F) employing PCIL exhibit remarkable cycle performances at both ambient and elevated temperatures (capacity retention after 300 cycles: 74.8% at 25 °C and 82.9% at 45 °C), surpassing the performance of conventional carbonate (1 M KPF 6 EC/PC) and dilute potassium ionic liquid electrolyte (PIL). The present work involves an improved, pseudo-three-component synthetic approach for the synthesis of dimeric indoles using 4 mol% [BCMIM][Cl] ionic liquid via metal-free synthesis in aqueous ethanol under reflux conditions. A series of 35 derivatives were furnished in up to 95% yields in 0.5 h to 1.5 h. These derivatives were then analyzed using various spectroscopic techniques. The salient features of this methodology are mild reaction conditions, metal-free synthesis, simple work-up procedure, short reaction time, reusability for up to 4 cycles, good to excellent yields and low catalyst loading. The UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques were used to investigate the photophysical characteristics of selected derivatives. The absorption and emission spectra reveal a peak wavelength (λmax) in the ranges of 216–228 nm (π–π*), 262–294 nm (n–π*), and 389–407 nm, respectively. A similar trend to the experimental data can be observed in density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The binding affinities of the synthesised derivatives with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) were computed using AutoDock Vina. Furthermore, 7af, 7ai, 7aj and 7gk were investigated for BSA and DNA binding studies. The ligands exhibited a binding strength of 105 and 103 M−1 with BSA and DNA, respectively. The binder's choice holds immense significance in the quest for robust electrochemical performances of lithium/sodium‐ion battery's (LIB/SIB) electrodes. Conventional PVDF binder is a passive polymer lacking the ability to transport Li+/Na+ and facilitate ion kinetics. This limitation poses constraints in achieving high specific capacity, fast charging, and long cycle life. Herein, a novel water‐soluble concentrated imidazolium functionalized poly(ionic liquid), poly(oxycarbonylmethylene 1‐allyl‐3‐methyimidazolium) (PMAI) is synthesized, and evaluated it as binder in LIB/SIB. PMAI‐based anodic‐half cell exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, achieving higher capacities (297 mAhg−1 at 1C for LIBs and 250 mAhg−1 at 60 mAg−1 for SIBs) and good cycle stability (80 % capacity retention after 750 cycles for LIBs; 96% capacity retention after 200 cycles for SIBs), compared to PVDF binder. In addition, PMAI/Gr delivers a higher discharge capacity of 85 mAhg−1 than PVDF/Gr with 47 mAhg−1 at 5C. PMAI‐containing electrodes show better rate capability at different current densities than PVDF binder in LIB/SIB. The enhanced ion diffusion coefficient, lower resistance and decreased activation energy of desolvation, are ascribed to densely polar ionic liquid groups along the polymer and formation of a functionalized SEI via binder reduction. The development of copper nanoparticle (CuNP)-based catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (ECO2-R) offers a promising approach to enhance its transformation into other industrially significant compounds. This study reports ECO2-R at -1.3 V vs RHE using CuNPs and catalytic inks composed of CuNPs and ionic liquids (ILs), observing significant differences in the selectivity of each catalyst. Specifically, CuNPs alone show a preference for producing ethylene and aqueous products, such as formic acid, ethanol, and formaldehyde. In contrast, the addition of ILs to the catalytic system redirects selectivity toward gaseous products, with methane being the main product. These findings highlight the potential to optimize catalyst composition to tailor the selectivity of CO2 conversion processes. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO2, eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO2, often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode–electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation. With the increase of drug‐resistant bacteria and the limitations of traditional antibacterial methods, photocatalytic inhibition has received widespread attention as a novel antibacterial method. In this paper, poly(1‐vinyl‐3‐ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) composite oxygenated carbon nitride (PBF‐OCN) were prepared by in situ free radical polymerization using 1‐vinyl‐3‐ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and OCN. The results showed that the light absorption ability and electron hole separation rate of PBF‐OCN were greatly improved compared with that of OCN, and the rate constant for photocatalytic removal MB of PBF‐OCN‐1 was about 1.39 times of that OCN. The growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) could be significantly inhibited by PBF‐OCN under visible light, among which, the inhibition of PBF‐OCN‐3 was the most excellent, with the diameter of the circle of inhibition reaching 20.69 mm for E. coli, and 21.30 mm for S. aureus, and the inhibition rate against E. coli calculated by plate counting method reached 97.0%. The minimum inhibitory concentration for E. coli and S. aureus was 0.0625 mg/mL, respectively, and the possible inhibition mechanism of the samples was explored. Here, we propose a piperidine-based ionic liquid additive. The electrostatic shielding effect of the piperidine cation (PP13+) effectively inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites. Ionic liquid compressors are suitable for high-pressure hydrogen refuelling stations. The initial liquid piston height is a critical parameter in designing ionic liquid compressors. Sufficient initial liquid column height can effectively prevent hydrogen leakage and exposure of the solid piston. However, there is a lack of basis for selecting the initial ionic liquid column height in the compression cylinder. The gas-liquid interface in the multi-stage compression is investigated by an experimentally verified numerical simulation model. The results show that in the low-pressure stage of the ionic liquid compressor, the initial liquid piston height can equal to the piston stroke, but in the high-pressure stage, the solid piston could be exposed to the hydrogen, so it is necessary to increase the initial liquid piston height. By analyzing the fluctuation characteristics in the cylinder, it is found that there is a minimum initial liquid piston height in each stage to ensure effective sealing. With the rapid development of smart devices and wearable electronic products, there is an increasing demand for flexible, durable, and high-performance energy storage systems. Supercapacitors (SCs) have become strong candidates for the next generation of energy solutions due to their excellent power density, rapid charge and discharge capabilities, and long cycle life. However, the limitations of existing electrolytes in terms of high ionic conductivity, mechanical strength, and stability under extreme conditions have restricted the development of SCs. This study has developed a new type of dual-network hydrogel-polymer electrolyte (DNHPE) based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyacrylamide (PAM), Lithium bistrifluoromethanesulfonimidate (LiTFSI), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM][BF4]), to enhance mechanical performance and ionic conductivity. The DNHPE-1 exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity (9.34 S m−1), stretchability (650%), and thermal stability, which are crucial for the development of SCs and wearable sensors. In addition, the high strain sensitivity of the DNHPE-1 makes it an ideal material for strain sensors, capable of accurately monitoring various human movements. The research results show that the supercapacitor (SC) based on DNHPE-1 can operate effectively under different environmental conditions, demonstrating its broad application prospects in flexible, wearable smart devices. Through various studies it has been established that expensive nature of ILs can be counter balanced by employing the mixture of IL/water instead of pure ILs. The IL/water system has the advantage to plasticize starch more effectively due to their synchronal effect and rational viscosity. The properties of ILs can be tempered by preferring particular cations/anions according to the specific type of starch which may be helpful in convenient dissolution and modification of starch. Starch can be modified by esterification or etherification reaction in IL medium to alter their properties and to use it in various application areas. This study employed a microwave-assisted ionic liquid extraction method to extract three alkaloids (berberine, palmatine, and berbamine) from the bark of Phellodendron amurense Rupr. . Initially, the impact of the type of ionic liquid and liquid-tosolid ratio on extraction efficiency was investigated through single-factor experiments. Subsequently, the effects of ionic liquid concentration, extraction time, and temperature on extraction efficiency were further explored. The Box-Behnken response surface methodology was then applied to optimize and obtained the optimal extraction process, which was subsequently compared with traditional extraction methods. The research findings indicated that [Bmim] [Br] solution exhibited the highest extraction efficiency for the alkaloids. The optimal extraction conditions included an ionic liquid concentration of 0. 31 mol/L, a temperature of 94°C, and an extraction time of 15 minutes. Under these conditions, the yields of berberine, palmatine, and berbamine were 0. 047%±0. 003%, 0.421%± 0. 011%, and 1.150%±0. 028%, respectively. Compared to the traditional water heating reflux method, the extraction efficiencies were 9. 3%, 12. 8%, and 23. 6% higher, respectively. Hydrogels have attracted extensive attention for their promising applications as flexible sensors. Developing conductive hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties still remains a significant challenge. Herein, double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) are prepared through repetitive freezing/thawing process. The hydrogels are further treated with Fe3+ ions to enhance the mechanical properties due to the complexation between carboxyl groups and Fe3+ ions. The influence of the amount of PILs and concentration of Fe3+ on mechanical properties and conductivity is investigated. The optimal DN hydrogel P(VMCA-AA)1/PVA-Fe3+4 shows excellent mechanical properties, whose tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness are 2.2 MPa, 350%, and 3.5 MJ m−3, respectively. P(VMCA-AA)1/PVA-Fe3+4 also displays a good conductivity of 1.04 S m−1. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates a high sensing sensitivity with a gauge factor (GF) of 3.36, indicating its application potential as a flexible sensor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyclic organic compounds containing sulfur atoms constitute a large group, and they play an important role in the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds. They are valuable intermediates for the synthesis of other compounds or biologically active compounds themselves. The synthesis of heterocyclic compounds poses a major challenge for organic chemists, especially in the context of applying the principles of "green chemistry". This work is a review of the methods of synthesis of various S-heterocyclic compounds using green solvents such as water, ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, glycerol, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, and sabinene. The syntheses of five-, six-, and seven-membered heterocyclic compounds containing a sulfur atom or atoms, as well as those with other heteroatoms and fused-ring systems, are described. It is shown that using green solvents determines the attractiveness of conditions for many reactions; for others, such use constitutes a real compromise between efficiency and mild reaction conditions. The rheology control of water-based drilling fluids at ultra-high temperatures has been one of the major challenges in deep or ultra-deep resource exploration. In this paper, the effects of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (ILA), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (ILB) and N-methyl, butylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (ILC) on the rheological properties and filtration loss of polymer-based slurries at ultra-high temperatures (200 °C and 240 °C) are investigated by the American Petroleum Institute (API) standards. The results show that ionic liquids with different structures could improve the high-temperature rheological properties of polymer-based drilling fluids. The rheological parameter value (YP/PV) of the polymer-based slurry formulated with ILC is slightly higher than that with ILA at the same concentration, while the YP/PV value of the polymer-based slurry with ILA is slightly higher than that with ILB, which is consistent with the TGA thermal stability of ILA, ILB, and ILC; the thermal stability of ILC with pyrrolidine cations is higher than that of ILA with imidazole cations, and the thermal stability of ILA with bis(trifluorosulfonyl)amide anions is higher than that of ILB with tetrafluoroborate anions. Cation interlayer exchange between organic cation and sodium montmorillonite can improve the rheological properties of water-based drilling fluids. And meantime, the S=O bond in bis(trifluorosulfonyl)amide ions and the hydroxyl group of sodium montmorillonite may form hydrogen bonds, which also may increase the rheological properties of water-based drilling fluids. This research investigates the utilization of an ionic liquid combination of solidified floating organic drop micro-extraction (IL-SFODME) to augment the concentration of trace amounts of lead, working as a preliminary stage before electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) analysis without the use of chelating agents. Key parameters impacting the microextraction efficiency—including pH, the volume of the ionic liquid (1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, HMIMPF6), temperature, extraction time, and stirring speed—were methodically examined to determine optimal conditions. Under detected optimized conditions, an enhancement factor of 71.2 was obtained for a 15 mL sample solution. The calibration curve exhibited linearity within the concentration range of 0.2–2.5 µg/L, with a detection limit (3σ) of 0.054 µg/L and a quantification limit (10σ) of 0.18 µg/L. For seven replicate measurements of 0.5 µg/L lead, the relative standard deviation (RSD) was ±2.30%. This method was effectively implemented to extract and quantify lead in both reference water and different real water samples, showcasing significantly efficient extraction performance. The removal of nitrogen compounds from fuel via the conventional method, which is hydrodenitrogenation, is costly and involves catalysts and energy-intensive conditions (600 K and 300 atm). Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as a promising alternative solvent for the denitrogenation of fuel oil. However, certain ILs are expensive and challenging to synthesize, prompting the exploration of protic ionic liquid (PIL) substitutes, which offer similar advantages to ILs. This study utilized the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) to predict the phase equilibria for three PILs—triethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate (TEA-TSA), triethylammonium salicylate (TEA-SA) and triethylammonium benzoate (TEA-BZ)—which were subsequently validated through experimental investigations. Liquid–liquid extraction experiments were conducted at 298 K and 1 atm, with pyrrole (serving as the model nitrogen compound) concentrations in n-hexadecane (representing the model fuel) ranging from 10 to 50 wt%. Additionally, the NRTL model effectively correlated the experimental tie lines. The obtained data indicated that TEA-TSA exhibited superior selectivity and distribution ratio compared to TEA-SA and TEA-BZ. All the ternary systems tested displayed positive slopes, suggesting a higher affinity of nitrogen compounds for the PIL. Supporting this observation, interaction energy (ΔE) and excess enthalpy (HE) were employed. The predicted outcomes revealed that TEA-TSA had high ΔE, and all PILs exhibited negative values of HE. This work focused on the solubility of ethane in three promising ionic liquids {1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluormethylsulfonyl) imide [HMIM][Tf2N], 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dimethyl-phosphate [BMIM][DMP], and 1-Propyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)-imide [PMIM][Tf2N]}. The solubilities were measured at 303.15 K to 343.15 K and pressures up to 1.4 MPa using a gravimetric microbalance. The overall ranking of ethane solubility in the ionic liquids from highest to lowest is the following: [HMIM][Tf2N] > [PMIM][Tf2N] > [BMIM][DMP]. The Peng–Robinson equation of state was used to model the experimental data using three different mixing rules: van der Waals one, van der Waals two, and Wong–Sandler mixing rules combined with the Non-Random Two-Liquid model. The average absolute deviations for the three mixing rules for the ionic liquids at the three temperatures were 4.39, 2.45, and 2.45%, respectively. Henry's Law constants for ethane in [BMIM] [DMP] were the highest (lowest solubility) amongst other ionic liquids studied in this work. The solubility ranking for the 3 ILs was confirmed by calculating their overall polarity parameter (N) using COSMO-RS. The selectivity of CO2 over C2H6 was estimated at three temperatures, and the overall ranking of the selectivity was in the following order: [PMIM][Tf2N] > [BMIM][DMP] > [HMIM][Tf2N] > Selexol. Selexol is an efficient and widely used physical solvent in gas sweetening. It has lower selectivity than the three ionic liquids studied. [PMIM][Tf2N], a promising solvent, has the highest selectivity among the three ILs studied and would, therefore, be the best choice if, in addition to carbon dioxide capture, ethane co-absorption was to be avoided. Carotenoids are high added-value products primarily known for their intense coloration and high antioxidant activity. They can be extracted from a variety of natural sources, such as plants, animals, microalgae, yeasts, and bacteria. Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B is a bacterium recognized as a hyper-pigment producer. However, due to its adaptations to its natural habitat, hydrocarbon-contaminated soils, strain 1B is resistant to different organic solvents, making carotenoid extraction through conventional methods more laborious and inefficient. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been abundantly shown to increase carotenoid extraction in plants, microalgae, and yeast; however, there is limited information regarding bacterial carotenoid extraction, especially for the Gordonia genus. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of ILs to mediate bacterial carotenoid extraction and develop a method to achieve higher yields with fewer pre-processing steps. In this context, an initial screening was performed with biomass of strain 1B and nineteen different ILs in various conditions, revealing that tributyl(ethyl)phosphonium diethyl phosphate (IL#18), combined with ethyl acetate (EAc) as a co-solvent, presented the highest level of carotenoid extraction. Afterward, to better understand the process and optimize the extraction results, two experimental designs were performed, varying the amounts of IL#18 and EAc used. These allowed the establishment of 50 µL of IL#18 with 1125 µL of EAc, for 400 µL of biomass (cell suspension with about 36 g/L), as the ideal conditions to achieve maximal carotenoid extraction. Compared to the conventional extraction method using DMSO, this novel procedure eliminates the need for biomass drying, reduces extraction temperatures from 50 °C to 22 ± 2 °C, and increases carotenoid extraction by 264%, allowing a near-complete recovery of carotenoids contained in the biomass. These results highlight the great potential of ILs for bacterial carotenoid extraction, increasing the process efficiency, while potentially reducing energy consumption, related costs, and emissions.
