Taeniothrips eucharii (Whetzel) (Thysanoptera Thripidae), the oriental lily-flower thrips, is recorded for the first time in South America. Specimens were collected in June and September 2023 on orchid (Dendrobium sp.), reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea), African iris (Dietes bicolor) and yellow wild iris (Dietes iridioides) in southern Brazil. The species is native from Asia and is considered a pest of ornamentals in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. It is also known as a potential vector of Orthotospovirus hippeflavi (= Hippeastrum chlorotic ringspot virus). No damage caused by T. eucharii or associated viruses has been observed on its hosts in Brazil thus far. Information on pest status, distribution, hosts, and recognition are provided. At the moment, the six species regularly recorded in Central Europe are the common silverfish I L. saccharinum i , the firebrat I Thermobia domestica i Packard, 1873, I Atelura formicaria i Heyden, 1805 (a species living in ant nests), and three recently introduced species: the invasive gray or long-tailed silverfish I Ctenolepisma longicaudatum i Escherich, 1905, the four-lined silverfish I C. lineatum i (Fabricius, 1775), and I C. calvum i (Ritter, 1910). Museum collections used the insect blunder trap I Catchmaster i and pheromone trap I Finicon i for webbing clothes moths ( I Tineola bisselliella i ) in museums in Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein (provided by PPS www.pps-vertrieb.de, accessed on 1 July 2022). Insect traps from Austrian museums provide a clear picture of an increasing catch of I C. calvum i (Figure 4a), as well as a sharp rise in the number of museums where the insect is present (Figure 4b). Ctenolepisma calvum was first described in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) in 1910, and this island is probably the origin of this species. Later, it was also found in the Caribbean (Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago). Up until the present, it has only been identified within buildings (a synanthropic species), and its natural habitat is unknown. In 2007, it was discovered in Germany and was considered a neobiotic species of Lepismatidae in Europe. It has rapidly spread throughout Europe and beyond in recent years. This led us to analyze the available data of the first occurrences in Germany, Austria, and other European countries. Furthermore, we compared the spread inside of museums in Vienna (Austria) and Berlin (Germany). These museums have been monitored for a long period with sticky traps, representing the best source of information on the dispersion dynamics of Ctenolepisma calvum. We found a scattered occurrence of this species in 18 countries in Europe (including Russia and Ukraine). The first record for Poland has not previously been published; however, this species has been present there since 2014. Surprisingly, it was found in Hungary in 2003, but a record was only published online in 2021. Additionally, in Germany and Austria, where most data are available, the spread of the species does not follow any clear pattern. In museums in Berlin, the species has only been found in one location. In contrast, the species rapidly spread in museums in Vienna between 2014 and 2021, from four to 30 locations, and it is now a well-established species with occasional high abundance. We examined the spread of the species at three spatial scales: (i) Europe, (ii) national, and (iii) regional. Our observations indicate that it is possibly distributed with materials (packaging material, hygiene articles, paper, cardboard, and collection items). Little is yet known about the biology of this introduced pest. We describe its preferred habitat within buildings, its climate requirements, and its potential to act as a new museum pest in Central Europe. This species seems to thrive at room temperature in buildings. Further impact on the species due to climate change in the future is also discussed. We offer a simple morphological key and a detailed identification table to help correct species identification.

Ophelimus near migdanorum, a foliage gall wasp-inducer of Eucalyptus, is recorded for the first time in Colombia, infesting both mature ornamental trees of Eucalyptus globulus (Labill.) and monoculture plantations in the periurban forest in the city of Bogotá. The parasitoid Closterocerus chamaeleon was also emerged from the galled foliage. The spread of this pest and its parasitoid in other Eucalyptus species planted in Colombia has not been evaluated. The alfalfa root weevil Sitona discoideus Gyllenhal 1834 (Curculionidae: Entiminae) is herein reported for the first time for Argentina. This weevil is native to southern Europe and northern Africa and was accidentally introduced in Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, and Chile. A nonnative pest of potato recently established and causing significant economic damage in Portugal and Spain was initially identified as Epitrix similaris Gentner and included on lists of quarantine pests. The identity of this pest was doubted by some experts, since E. similaris is a rare species previously recorded only from California and does not damage potato in its native range. Our comparison of 20 specimens of this pest from Portugal with paratypes of E. similaris has revealed that it is not E. similaris. The name "Epitrix similaris" should be removed from lists of quarantine pests. The damage to potato tubers caused by the larvae of this pest is similar to that of E. tuberis Gentner, but examination of paratypes of E. tuberis has revealed that the pest is not E. tuberis. This pest differs from all species of Epitrix recorded in the Holarctic and from all known Epitrix pests of potato in the world. Herewith it is described as a new species Epitrix papa sp. n., whose native range is unknown.

Early detection of invasive alien species and the ability to track their spread are critical for undertaking appropriate management decisions. Citizen science surveys are potentially valuable tools for quickly obtaining information on biodiversity and species distributions. The Asian brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is an invasive pest of agricultural crops and a dwelling nuisance. Halyomorpha halys was first recorded in Italy in 2012 in Emilia Romagna, one of the most important fruit producing regions of Europe. To rapidly obtain data on its distribution in the newly invaded area, a survey that combined citizen science and active search was set up using multimedia channels. Data concerning when, where and how the bugs were spotted were collected, together with photographs and specimens. The survey detected established breeding populations in different areas of Northern Italy and Southern Switzerland, indicating a potentially high risk for crop damage that extends beyond the territories of first detection. Furthermore, new data on H. halys phenology, host plants, voltinism and behaviour were obtained. The importance of citizen science in early detection of introduced pest species is highlighted. Four species of mealybugs, Dysmicoccus neobrevipes, Phenacoccus defectus, Ph. parvus, and Ph. solenopsis (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Pseudococcidae) are recorded for the first time from Japan in the Ryûkyû (Ryukyu) Archipelago, with brief biological notes. We discuss some features of these species compared with those of related species, D. brevipes and Ph. solani, and we consider their potential risks to Japanese agriculture and/or horticulture. The tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca, which is known as a vector of TSWV and Pantoea ananatis causing center rot of onion, and a serious pest of tobacco, cotton and groundnuts in North America, is newly recorded from the bulbs of Narcissus pseudonarcissus in Honshu, mainland Japan. Two strains were found in Shimane Prefecture. One strain was collected from a bulb produced in Niigata Prefecture in the winter of 2002, and the other was collected from bulbs produced in Fukushima Prefecture in the autumn of 2002. The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, was introduced to north central North America from Asia in 2000, and it has become a major pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Understanding how natural enemies impact aphid populations in the field is an important component in developing a comprehensive management plan. We examined the impact of naturally occurring predators in the field by using exclusion cages during July-August 2004 and 2005. Field cages of different mesh diameters were used to exclude different sizes of natural enemies from aphid-infested plots. Plots were surveyed twice weekly for A. glycines and natural enemies. Densities were recorded. Cage effects on mean temperature and soybean growth were found to be insignificant. Significant differences in aphid density were found between treatments in both years of the study (2004 and 2005); however, aphid densities between years were highly variable. Onus insidiosus (Say) was the most commonly occurring predator in the field. Other natural enemies were present in both years but not in high numbers. Parasitoids were present in both years, but their numbers did not suppress aphid densities. Treatment differences within years were related to the abundance of natural enemies. The large differences in aphid abundance between years were associated with the higher number of O. insidiosus found in the field in 2005 (416 total O. insidiosus) than in 2004 (149 total O. insidiosus). This study suggests that naturally occurring predators, primarily O. insidiosus, can have a large impact on A. glycines populations when predator populations are established before initial A. glycines colonization. Introduced species are an increasingly pervasive problem. While studies on the ecology and behavior of these pests are numerous, there is relatively little known of their physiology, specifically their reproductive and stress physiology. One of the best documented introduced pest species is the brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis, which was introduced onto the Pacific island of Guam sometime around World War II. The snake is responsible for severely reducing Guam''s native vertebrates. We captured free-living individuals throughout the year and measured plasma levels of stress and sex hormones in an effort to determine when they were breeding. These data were compared to reproductive cycles from a captive population originally collected from Guam. Free-living individuals had chronically elevated plasma levels of the stress hormone corticosterone and basal levels of sex steroids and a remarkably low proportion were reproductively active. These data coincide with evidence that the wild population may be in decline. Captive snakes, had low plasma levels of corticosterone with males displaying a peak in plasma testosterone levels during breeding. Furthermore, we compared body condition between the free-living and captive snakes from Guam and free-living individuals captured from their native range in Australia. Male and female free-living snakes from Guam exhibited significantly reduced body condition compared to free-living individuals from Australia. We suggest that during the study period, free-living brown tree snakes on Guam were living under stressful conditions, possibly due to overcrowding and overexploitation of food resources, resulting in decreased body condition and suppressed reproduction.
