When a pipeline is laid on the seabed, local scour often occurs below it due to sea currents. In practical engineering, there are some cases that two pipelines laid on the seabed need to cross with each other. The complex flow structures around two crossing pipelines make the scour characteristics different from that of an isolated single pipeline. In this study, scour below two crossing pipelines was simulated numerically using the CFD software Flow-3D. The study is focused on the effect of the intersecting angle on the equilibrium depth and time scale of scour below the crossing position. Five intersecting angles, i.e., α = 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 90°, are considered, where α = 0° and 90° represent two pipelines parallel and perpendicular to each other, respectively. The results show that the equilibrium depth and the time scale of scour below the two crossing pipelines are greater than those of an isolated single pipeline. The equilibrium depth and time scale of scour have the largest values at α = 0° and decrease with the increase of the intersecting angle. The intersecting of pedestrian streams is a common phenomenon which would lead to the pedestrian deceleration, stopping, and even threat to the safety of walking. The organization of pedestrian flow is a critical factor which influences the intersection traffic. The aim of this paper is to study the characteristics of oblique pedestrian streams by a set of pedestrian experiments. Two groups of experiment participants, three volume levels and five intersecting angles were tested. The qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis methods were applied to find out the relationship between the pedestrian streams angle and pedestrian characteristics. The results indicated that the mean and median speed, exit traffic efficiency decreased initially and increased afterwards with the increase of intersecting angles when the volume was 1,000 p/h/m and 3,000 p/h/m, while the speed standard deviation changing inversely. However, these four factors show the opposite variation tendency in volume 5,000 p/h/m. Meanwhile, the quadratic function was selected to fit them. It is found that the worst speeds of pedestrian streams were 131° and 122° in volume 1,000 p/h/m and 3,000 p/h/m, respectively, and the greatest influence on pedestrian streams was 125° in volume 5,000 p/h/m. The results of this research can help establish the foundation for the organization and optimization of intersecting pedestrian streams.

Abstract: This paper introduces a new mechanism which is designed for the transmission of power between two intersecting shafts. The mechanism consists of one drive shaft and one driven shaft, six guide arms, and three connecting arms. The intersecting angle between the input shaft and the output shaft can be varied up to 135° while the velocity ratio between the two shafts remains constant. The research also includes a kinematic analysis and a simulation using Visual NASTRAN, Autodesk Inventor Dynamic and COSMOS Motion. The softwares showed that this mechanism can transmit constant velocity ratios at all angles between two shafts. By comparing the graphs of analytical analysis and simulation analysis, validity of equations was proved. Finally, by fabrication and evaluation of the mechanism it was shown that this mechanism can transmit constant velocity practically. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Three features about the intersecting state of two gratings are used to identify dot-matrix holograms created by two-beam writers in this paper. The first feature is the intersection angle of the fringes of two gratings. The second feature is the ratio of the pitches of two lowest-order moiré-patterns formed by overlapping two gratings. The third feature is the length ratio of the two diagonal lines of a parallelogram constructed by two neighboring fringes of a first grating and two neighboring fringes of a second grating. All the three features are equivalent, i.e. they are all relative to the intersection angle of two gratings. Because the grating orientations of grating dots cannot be accurately reproduced for the orientation uncertainties of the components used by a two-beam writer, the intersection angles of the gratings of grating dots cannot be easily counterfeited. Therefore, the proposed methods are practical and feasible for the anti-counterfeiting applications of dot-matrix holograms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
