This study applies a hierarchical clustering approach to identify social enterprise models that have appeared in a setting of public sector-led incubation. Within such a context, a high degree of conformity ought to be apparent due to the coercive isomorphic pressures associated with public sector patronage. We nominate South Korea for our analysis, given that the rising number of social enterprises in the country is closely related to a regulatory intervention. Based on an analysis of 468 social enterprises, we find, contrary to expectations, that distinct clusters of government-certified social enterprises have emerged, namely social utility niche, job outsourcing, market opportunity, and integrated balanced models. We typologize these models according to their strategic orientation, mission focus, and institutional alignment. In doing so, we contribute to social enterprise research by illustrating how organizational pluralism may manifest when the growth of a population of social enterprises is directly linked to public sector intervention and regulation. This work is a cs-QCA study which compares eight Brazilian cases involving conflicts of interests between public and private logics, to determine whether and under what conditions it is possible to manage these conflicts. In three cases, the organization was able to satisfy both public and private interests. This resulted from a set of conditions which cannot be considered in isolation from each other. Based on these results, we develop propositions which can be tested in future studies. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the plurality of logics composing an organizational field and how that plurality affects a sport governing body's (SGB) sense of self. The authors sought to determine what logics exist in a specific field and how they interact according to Kraatz and Block's (2017) types of organizational responses. Finally, the authors explore how an organization's responses affect organizational outcomes. Design/methodology/approach: The authors analyzed 476 unique organizational web pages and documents and 293 news media articles from four news outlets. The authors conduct a content analysis informed by Gioia et al.'s (2013) method to explore the website data to understand the logics of the field. The authors analyze the media articles for media accounts of events and determine how logics inform an SGB's actions (Cocchairella and Edwards, 2020). Findings: The authors find institutional plurality leads to a fractured organizational sense of self, resulting in poor outcomes. The authors' findings suggest Kraatz and Block's (2017) as well as other previously theorized strategies do not lead to an organization reconciling competing logics. Rather, the strategies employed led to outcomes harming the organization's legitimacy and financial well-being. Originality/value: There are several calls within the broader management field and the sport management field to address institutional plurality (Kraatz and Block, 2017; Robertson et al., 2022). Acknowledging the importance of institutional pluralism and food service firms' dynamic capacity theory, this research examines customer service perception that could apply to develop or refine the possibility of different business logic in creating varied customer service outcomes. Using mixed methods, Study 1 uses the quantitative critical incident technique to measure how the business ability of service organizations should not be restricted by the type of business model. Based on the results of Study 1, a conceptual model was proposed for Study 2 and found that customers' value mind-set and value construal can influence the overall customer service experience that can be formed in the customer construal level process. Further, business acumen can also yield a considerable range of emotional and physical inputs depending on the corresponding business logic. The family business literature has not addressed the role of information systems (IS) in the development of trust in family businesses. Through an in-depth analysis of a Chinese industrial family business in Qingdao, this study shows how several IS contribute to trust within the organization. Trust is conceptualized according to three dimensions, namely interpersonal trust, competence trust, and systems trust. Three main IS have been identified in the organization, namely WeChat, DingTalk, and the Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP). This exploratory study analyzed how eight departments use these IS to understand which institutional logic is embedded within each IS. Each information system is conceptualized as embedded in a specific institutional logic which is not neutral in terms of trust building. These findings highlight the fact that Chinese executives use specific information systems to develop trust. ERP (here SAP) has a specific inherent institutional logic, namely rational managerialism, which contributes to system trust. Social media such as WeChat and DingTalk are embedded in their own institutional logic which makes them more adapted to specific activities. Unlike rational managerialism, the institutional logic associated with WeChat includes a strong focus on interpersonal communication, cooperation and problem-solving. WeChat is associated with the development of interpersonal trust whereas rational managerialism is rather associated with transparence and formality, thus unsuitable for developing interpersonal trust. Chinese executives use WeChat to create an informal and dynamic social space which promotes the development of stronger social ties with each other. DingTalk is associated with another logic which promotes formal information sharing, reliability and internal management. This information system contributes to the development of another type of trust, namely competence trust. The two social media contribute to sustaining interpersonal trust and competence-based trust which are critical in the development stage of a family business. Findings also show that family members need to create a forum without their presence for employees to exchange freely, thus creating a space in which trust can blossom. Context and background Colonial legacy and the continuous implementation of neoliberal policies have led to the creation of institutional pluralism in the planning of customary land in peri-urban areas in Ghana. During land commoditisation, peri-urban customary land planning regularly involves physical planning authorities, traditional authorities, and private surveyors. The community members are rarely involved in the planning of their communities, and the planning often leads to eviction of the community members from their ancestral land. The evictions usually lead to conflicts between traditional authorities and community members, and in other cases, the dispossession precipitates multiple sales of land by different people. Goal and Objectives: The study examines how the introduction of urban planning practices in peri-urban Ghana creates institutional pluralism, resulting in the breakdown of indigenous belief systems during land commoditisation. In this era of uplifting the rich culture heritage of African communities, this study aimed to contribute to the subtheme on land and spirituality in the African sociocultural context of the conference. The study recommends that to maintain land and spirituality in the African socio-cultural context, urban planning practices should be embedded in the indigenous land tenure systems, and the planning should involve community members. Methodology: This study deployed New Institutional Economics approach from the perspective of Social Anthropology to examine how the introduction of urban planning changed the institutional planning structure in peri-urban Ghana, leading to erosion of the indigenous belief systems on land during land commoditisation. The study was conducted in Aburaso and Kromoase in peri-urban Kumasi between 2018 and 2020. The researcher adopted a qualitative research method and data was collected through in-depth interviews from 2 Regional Lands Commission Officials, 2 Physical Planning Department Officials, 2 traditional authorities, 5 clans heads, and 33 household heads in both communities. Results: The findings from the study showed that sacred days were no more observed in the communities. In addition, customs regulating access to streams were broken down. Prior to the planning of the communities, goats were prohibited in the communities. However, presently, people sent goats to the communities. This paper looks at scalar politics, power struggles, and institutional emergence in Daw Lar Lake in Karen state, Myanmar. It brings to light tensions between centralized and decentralized approaches in the country's natural resource governance, and how these are manifested in the current legal stalemate with regard to the formal management status of the lake. Building on earlier research on legal pluralism and critical institutionalism, we look at: 1) how the current legal stalemate with regard to the formal management status of the lake is rooted in ongoing bureaucratic struggles between different government agencies; 2) local communities' strategies to develop and implement their own vision of lake governance through the formation of the Daw Lar Lake Interim Committee; and 3) the extent to which the Interim Committee is able to mediate diverse and often competing local uses and claims to natural resources at (inter) village level, which are based on a mix of customary and 'official' legal entitlements and normative orderings. From a policy perspective, we highlight the need to identify pathways for collective action among and across different groups of resource users, as the latter will be crucial in addressing ongoing resource competition, managing cross-sectoral livelihood impacts and ensuring sustainable lake management. • Bureaucratic struggles result in current legal stalemate with regard to the formal management status of the lake. • Local communities' strategies to cope with this stalemate reveal the (re)shaping of state spaces as a terrain of contestation. • Nested local institutional arrangements are key for the overall shaping of water and land governance in the lake area. • Farm households' access to land and water (re)shape the localized dynamics and processes of institutional emergence. Existing studies have largely focused on incumbent firms, their corporate, technological, and political strategies within a given sector. Whilst insightful, viewing incumbency as a more open concept could allow research to better examine the blurred boundaries across sectors and between sectors and the polity. The plurality of relationship could also result in more tensions and legitimacy problems for incumbents. We ask how can incumbency maintain legitimacy under such pluralistic context? We conceptualise ways contradiction may be managed through political responses and tested our hypothesis in a case study of an urban water initiative in Indonesia. Crisis events, governance messiness, social conflicts, and cognitive contestations are identified as important and interrelated contradictions, which have deep roots in the broader polity. Research question: The increased competitive demands placed on modern sports organisations, intensifies pressures on coaches to produce positive results. These factors may increase relational tensions between managerial-sports leaders (administrators) and the leaders of sports teams (coaches). Few studies have explored the challenges facing coaches when attempting to achieve performance success. Utilising institutional logics and the concepts of trust and power, this study investigated the relationship between coaches and administrators by exploring the various interactions and negotiations involved when in the context of competitive demands. Research methods: The views of thirteen highly experienced cricket coaches, with multi-layered coaching experiences operating in the South African cricket development environment, were recruited for semi-structured interviews, raising several significant themes. Results and findings: A significant challenge to coaches were administrators exhibiting a lack of understanding of the environment required to develop cricketers, providing areas of conflict such as; perceived differences in priorities leading to non-collaborative, ill-judged and, at times biased decisions; differences in priorities affecting resource allocation to drive and sustain long-term development due short-term financial decision-making and result-driven agendas. Implications: Theoretically, this research explores how institutional logics, trust and power enhance our understanding of the coach-administrator relationship and have potential research implications for understanding similar dynamic relationships in other sport organisations. Practically, one implication for sports organisations is the role and importance of developing and applying more effective coach performance management system to alleviate potential problems in these relationships. Enterprise architecture (EA) is a systematic way of designing, planning, and implementing process and technology changes to address the complexity of information system (IS) landscapes. EA is operationalized when architecture visions move towards realization through concrete projects. We report a case study on the dynamics of operationalizing EA in the Norwegian hospital sector by exploring different EA project trajectories. Our empirical context is an institutionally pluralistic setting where multiple logics coexist. We show that the distinct logic of EA is added to the institutional context and we find that tensions among existing medical, technical, and managerial logics and EA principles and assumptions emerge. We contribute to the under‐researched topic of EA operationalization by suggesting a model that demonstrates how the meeting of multiple institutional logics can lead to varying degrees of differentiation or even disassociation from EA visions during decision‐taking in projects. Furthermore, we advance extant research on IS projects' implementation in institutionally pluralistic settings by providing an empirical account of actors' interactions and project leadership arrangements that contribute to the persistence of coexisting logics in a dynamic equilibrium. The subject of the paper is to consider the evolution of theoretical approaches to economic rationality as a key principle of economic choice in economic science. Thanks to various theoretical approaches, the category of economic rationality has got a completely different meaning and a much broader meaning than its neoclassical interpretation. The two basic (typical) theoretical models of economic behavior of man are explained and explained: full rationality and limited rationality, which can be irrational (irrational or spontaneous) behavior and institutional (so-called post-rational) behavior. In doing so, a special emphasis is placed on the fragmentation of institutional rationality, which implies institutional pluralism as the most dominant principle of economic and social development. The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of institutions in general and for economic development in particular, which is undeniable in contemporary economic literature, as well as the dominance of institutional (post-rational) approach to economic behavior. In addition, the aim of the paper is to briefly explain the underlying reasons for the front, as well as the consequences of non-compliance, respectively the acceptance of monistic institutional improvisations (alternatives of alternative institutions) in place of institutional pluralism. Using the methods of abstraction, induction, deduction, descriptive analysis, and comparisons, the paper attempts to prove the hypothesis that institutional pluralism is the dominant and the only possible modern development principle recommended by non-institutional economic theories (NET), and proves the practice of all economically developed countries in which there is no room for any monistic improvisations (such as neoliberalism, dirigisism, etc.). The plenary emphasizes the beginning of institutional pluralism for social and economic development.

Developmental citizenship, which assumes the qualities of both political and social citizenship, has decisively shaped the political, social as well as economic relations between many postcolonial states and their respective citizenries. It is the historical imperative of national development that has even induced many state-socialist countries to embark on ideologically self-contradicting paths toward various types of market economies. In China's so-called pragmatist reform, for instance, the nominally communist leadership still monopolizes political power under the premise that its developmental mission necessitates both dictatorship and the market economy. Its sociopolitical governance in the reform era presupposes the societal validity and necessity of developmental citizenship. However, it should be noted that China's accommodation of liberal socioeconomic institutions and practices has not necessarily required a full abolishment of socialist institutions and practices. China's developmental pluralism, insinuated in Deng Xiaoping's famous call for 'black cat, white cat', has ended up resuscitating many socialist-era institutions and practices as integral elements of the so-called socialist market economy. Chinese people's developmental citizenship in the reform era has closely reflected an extremely complicated socioeconomic order under which socialist institutions and practices both mitigate and amplify market-embedded inequalities. Pluralistic organizations face the challenge of managing the co-existence of multiple sets of assumptions associated with each institutional logic. This multiplicity of assumptions problematizes the findings from the change management literature that for successful change management, the normative assumptions of the change initiative should be congruent with the organizational normative assumptions. One of the organizational mechanisms in which the normative assumptions are encoded and enacted is the system of accountability, hence in pluralistic organizations, there is a need to understand the role of the interplay of the normative accountability assumptions of the change initiative with the multiple sets of accountability assumptions representing individual logics within the organization. This study examines the case of a project to renew a strategic framework of a Canadian public university. The project diverged from the existing governance practices and their associated accountability assumptions that represented the institutional logic of managerialism. We found that this project was widely accepted, despite deviating from the institutional logic that supported existing practices, because its accountability assumptions were congruent with co-existing and deeply-rooted, democratic logic within the organization. Our findings contribute to the change management literature by highlighting the role of normative accountability assumptions in change management within pluralistic organizations. This study seeks to better understand the way, in which business interest associations in a developing country address issues associated with the plurality of logics and interest among their members. The dilemma that business associations face, when it comes to representing the various interests of their constituents under a single banner, is adequately documented. But there is a gap in empirical literature on the way that associations successfully address this dilemma from the top down, especially in a developing country like Sri Lanka. We present a case study of the four most prominent peak national business associations in Sri Lanka – and their attempts at reconciling the diverse voices and interests of their members. We find that insights from contemporary institutional logics literature are particularly helpful in explaining the strategic and structural means, by which Sri Lankan business associations address the issue of presenting a united front for the very diverse groups of firms and industries that make up their membership. Specifically, our observation shows that Sri Lanka's peak business associations respond to the diverse, and at times competing, interests of their members in ways that are consistent with Kraatz and Block's characterisation of organisational responses to institutional complexity, namely through: elimination/marginalisation, mediation, compartmentalisation and detachment. Social entrepreneurship increasingly involves collective, voluntary organizing efforts where success depends on generating and sustaining members' participation. To investigate how such participatory social ventures achieve member engagement in pluralistic institutional settings, we conducted a qualitative, inductive study of German Renewable Energy Source Cooperatives (RESCoops). Our findings show how value tensions emerge from differences in RESCoop members' relative prioritization of community, environmental, and commercial logics, and how cooperative leaders manage these tensions and sustain member participation through temporal, structural, and collaborative compromise strategies. We unpack the mechanisms by which each strategy enables members to justify organizational decisions that violate their personal value priorities and demonstrate their varying implications for organizational growth. Our findings contribute new insights into the challenges of collective social entrepreneurship, the capacity of hybrid organizing strategies to mitigate value concessions, and the importance of logic combinability as a key dimension of pluralistic institutional settings. The subject of this paper is a critique of the selective theoretical modelings of economic realities, which are monistic (quasi-neoliberal) and mathematical-statistical in nature. In this sense, the theme named Contemporary Substitutes of the Political Economy is defined. The aim of this research is that the above-mentioned modeling of economic reality would be described as a deliberate motion from the analysis and explanation of fundamental economic problems towards secondary issues. Therefore, we characterize them as unfair and programmed ways of fogging the essence of economic problems and crisis. We start from the hypothesis that these modelings replaced and virtually eliminated the former synthesized and useful political-economic analysis. In this paper, we have used a descriptive, comparative methods, panel sample and a schematic logic modeling. The results of our research show that the substitution of political economy by neoclassical and neoliberal economics is performed over a longer period, and through prioritizing the mathematical and statistical econometric analysis. As a proof, we present our selective research panel using a sample of 39 issues from five international journals, which can be found in databases SSCI and Scopus. This research is limited by the unavailability of most journals on the Internet and in printed publications. The application area of the research results is an economic theory. In conclusion, we ascertain the need for greater affirmation of political economy, which in combination with new institutional theory, enables a more realistic view of social and economic reality.

This paper will identify and analyze the basic institutional characteristics of the region of South East Europe (SEE6), because the building of institutions is one of the main conditions for sustainable development. Basic theoretical and practical barriers, that crucially influenced the current unfavorable transitional institutional characteristics in SEE6, will be researched in a selective way. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the essential institutional differences of this region in comparison with developed countries, particularly in terms of real institutional change, the application of institutional pluralism and the main institutional barriers. The paper starts from the hypothesis that ignoring the institutional pluralism and domination of alternative institutions in SEE6 led to dysfunctionality of institutional change, which had a negative impact on all indicators of economic development in the surveyed countries. The emphasis is on the factors of monistic anti-institutional action, from which the alternative institutions stand out for their destructive significance. It points to devastating and anti-developmental consequences of their actions, and their theoretical support of neoliberal type, which is in practice vulgarized and converted into a quasi-neoliberalism. It identifies the real and concrete causes of reproduced institutional vacuum. The findings from the study suggest that countries of the SEE6 region should apply civilization-proven development models of institutional pluralism type. This indicates the importance of taking real institutional changes and urgent overcoming the quasi-institutional forms in order to successfully valorize the economic resources in the countries of SEE6.

This paper aims to provide a brief assessment of the legal framework of the newly established metropolitan cities in the Italian domestic legal order. After an historical overview of previous attempts to set up metropolitan cities in Italy (1), it summarizes the main statutory provisions of the Delrio Law (No. 56/2014) through which metropolitan cities finally came into operation (2) and it provides an analysis of its implementation, thereby attempting to make clear whether increased institutional pluralism and differentiation in the local government system will strengthen or weaken Italian regionalism (3). The conclusion will argue that, while the enactment of local government reforms combined with the entering into force of a significant constitutional amendment will increasingly diminish the role of the Regions, metropolitan cities, due to their ambivalent nature, still lack any propulsive thrust and face the risk of being marginalized until a consistent legal framework for their proper funding is laid down (4).

In this article, we develop a structural model for studying how constellations of multiple institutional logics are instantiated at the organizational level. Conceptually, we complement an institutional logics perspective with structural interactionism and network theory and model a constellation as a nexus of organizational role identities and counterroles. The structure of such a nexus reveals degrees of differentiation and interconnectedness between logics as well as distinct interfaces. We validate and further develop our model through qualitative content analysis and semantic network analytical methods applied to the website of a large organization. Our study contributes to recent literature on institutional pluralism by further specifying the structural aspects of constellations of logics and different types of institutional pluralism (monolithic, fragmented, and modular). Specifically, we show how systems of role categories enable the identification of logics, and how multivocal roles create interfaces between them. Purpose – This paper takes an institutional approach to identify cognitive, normative, and regulatory factors affecting women’s business leadership in an under-studied traditional society. The purpose of this paper is to assess how such forces work to create a case of female leadership deficit (FLD) in Lebanon. Design/methodology/approach – The authors analyze interview data to identify themes linking women’s leadership with societal institutional forces. The qualitative analysis provides an understanding at the societal level of analysis which is only partially tempered through organizational structures. Findings – Misalignments among cognitive, normative, and regulative pillars inhibit real change. Organizational structures are not highly salient as the most important factors affecting women’s leadership. Rather, patriarchal structures, explicit favoring of males over females, and assignment of women to nurturing roles within the private sphere of the family are the major limiting factors impeding women’s ascension to leadership. Research limitations/implications – A promise of the institutional approach is enhancing the capacity to make meaningful comparisons between societies. This opens the door to uncovering whether documentable changes in regulations, cognitions, values, and norms regarding women in business leadership, will lead to observable changes in the size of FLD. Originality/value – This study presents a case of institutional pluralism where a positive force in one direction (regulatory) is sometimes opposed by other forces (cognitive and normative) limiting meaningful change. This study helps to explain why societies differ in the size of the FLD and to identify factors that predict within societal changes in the size of this deficit over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Institutionalizing a new organizational template in a pluralistic environment where multiple institutional logics coexist entails unique challenges where actors must negotiate conflict and carry out integrative and adaptive work. This paper examines how organizational actors in a large service sector trade union managed to craft integrative processes out of contentious processes in institutionalizing a new organizational template. Recently, renewed attention has focused on politics as a means through which integration is achieved in organizations under multiple institutional pressures. However, we know relatively little about how politics achieves organizational integration in pluralistic contexts. This paper sheds light on how successful institutionalization processes actually unfold in organizations. While extant literature on intra-organizational political processes has depicted politics mainly as a zero-sum game, findings in this study suggest that politics can be a generative process through which organizations adapt to changing conditions.
