Among other associated health problems, patients with SUD are at an increased risk of dying of suicide, with females displaying an even higher risk than males. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a gender-sensitive evaluation of changes in suicidal ideation during multimodal inpatient treatment at a hospital facility specialized in treating addiction.Methods: A total of 694 patients (68.2% male) completed routine assessment including suicidal ideation, abstinence confidence, impulsivity, emotion regulation, self-efficacy and autonomy and joy both before (T1) and at the end (T2) of treatment. Mean changes were evaluated with repeated measures MANOVAs.Results: Before treatment, a total of n=127 (18.3%) of the respondents reported suicidal ideation, which was reduced to n=72 (10.4%) by the end of treatment. Among female patients, the change in reported suicidal ideation compared from T1 to T2 (21.7% vs 7.7%) was significantly higher than among male patients (T1: 16.7%%, T2: 11.6%; p=0.040). Generally, females reported worse symptoms scores and slightly higher numbers of suicidal thoughts at baseline (effect sizes ranging from η²=.008 – 0.044). While both genders significantly profited from the treatment, female patients generally showed larger improvements than male.Discussion: Our study underscores the beneficial effect of addiction-specialized inpatient treatment on suicidal ideation. Additionally, we found a substantial gender effect: while female patients generally were more distressed before treatment, they also reported higher symptom reduction during the treatment. This result highlights the need to perform more gender-sensitive research and develop more gender-sensitive treatment programs.Keywords: addiction, inpatient therapy, alcohol, drugs, gender medicine

Background: Little is known about the occurrence of appendicitis during the re-nourishment period in anorexia nervosa (AN). We report three cases of appendicitis in patients with AN that occurred after hospitalization for treatment of AN. Case presentation: Case 1 is a 34-year-old female, case 2 is a 17-year-old female and case 3 is a 38-year-old female. Constipation was observed in all three cases. Careful management of defecation might be essential to prevent appendicitis among AN patients during the re-nourishment period under inpatient care. In addition, mild and diffuse symptoms were observed in all three cases. Therefore, diagnosis proved to be difficult to make and abdominal computed tomography was particularly helpful in all cases. As the symptoms were diffuse, the condition of appendicitis turned out to be more severe and complicated in one case. Additionally, the incidence of appendicitis in AN in the current study might be higher than that in the normal population. Conclusions: These findings suggest that appendicitis should be considered as one of the potentially important complications in the therapy for AN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Quality of life (QOL) measures have been used as assessment parameters in the management of chronic skin diseases. Our aim is to demonstrate the effect of inpatient therapy on the health-related QOL. Materials and methods: This study comprised 509 patients with skin diseases. Possible effects of inpatient therapy on QOL were measured as pre/post- treatment differences in Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and short form (SF)-36 health survey tests' mean scores. Results: The most common reasons necessitating the admission were severity of skin disease or acute deterioration of disease (46.1%). The mean DLQI value for all patients decreased after inpatient therapy (from 13.08 to 6.94). The mean SF-36 value of all subscales for all patients increased after inpatient therapy except for general health subscale of SF-36. The regression analysis showed significant effect of age, being previously hospitalized, duration of admission on the DLQI scores. While age and being previously hospitalized were the factors to affect some of the SF-36 subscale scores. Conclusion: Our results indicate that inpatient therapy may improve QOL of patients with dermatological diseases and that clinicians should consider assessment of DLQI to determine the therapy option for a patient. The present article proposes a method, practiced by the author, to adapt time-limited dynamic psychotherapy (TLDP), a short-term individual psychodynamic therapy, for use with inpatient psychotherapy groups. Characteristics of TLDP which suggest the usefulness of such an adaptation, including short-term duration, specific treatment focus, rapid conceptualizations and broad selection of patients, and emphasis on the here-and now in therapy, are discussed. The general approach to treatment, a supportive stance that involves an identification of maladaptive interpersonal issues, and then working on these issues without directly confronting the patients, is described. Specific therapeutic techniques for common inpatient group situations are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was adapted to a group format and used to investigate self-perceived change over time with respect to treatment goals in a sample of adults with histories of child abuse who participated in a 6-week inpatient trauma program. Using the COPM, 177 adults developed individualized goals and rated their performance and satisfaction with performance of these goals at admission, discharge, and 3, 6, and 12 months post-discharge. Goals were classified into six categories and changes in self-ratings were analyzed. Results indicated that the mean scores on the COPM were significantly improved over admission levels at all points in time with respect to goals of self-care, relationships and communication, coping with feelings, and spirituality. However, many participants did not maintain discharge levels at follow-up points. Comparison of the adapted COPM to other standardized measures used in this study supported concurrent criterion validity. Implications for helping professionals are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes a pilot study to examine the usefulness of adding a couples therapy component to inpatient drug and alcohol treatment for women. The treatment model was modified from a 12-week integrative systems model that has been empirically supported in outpatient treatment settings. A team of student-therapists received intensive training and supervision in the modified version. This article discusses the ability of chemical dependency counselors to implement this model, includes pre and post treatment comparisons, and qualitative findings regarding the efficacy of the project. The treatment model promises to be usable, safe, and practical in inpatient settings, and merits a more thoroughgoing clinical trial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
