Innovation is critical for organizations seeking to build and maintain a sustainable advantage in the competitive market. This study aims to construct a moderated mediation model to examine the effects of incremental and radical innovations on competitive advantage, which considers the mediating role of innovation speed and the moderating role of a supportive culture. Data from 201 Chinese firms were collected through questionnaires and the research hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis and bootstrapping techniques. The empirical results show that incremental and radical innovations have a significant positive effect on competitive advantage. Radical innovation has a greater impact on competitive advantage compared to incremental innovation. Innovation speed mediates the relationship between incremental and radical innovations and competitive advantage. Supportive culture positively moderates the relationship between incremental and radical innovations and innovation speed. Moreover, supportive culture positively moderates the conditional indirect effect of incremental and radical innovation on competitive advantage through innovation speed. Under demand uncertainty, supply chain network has to face disruptions in product systems of endogenous factors due to the time needed to adapt to stock production and feedback decisions along the chain of customer demand. This study aims to examine the effects of internal integration and external integration (including supplier integration and customer integration) on innovation speed with the moderation of demand uncertainty. Moreover, this study explores the relationship between supply chain integration, innovation speed and supply chain performance. Our results indicate that internal integration and external integration are positively associated with innovation speed. On the other hand, demand uncertainty moderates the positive relationship between internal integration and innovation speed as well as the relationship between supplier integration and innovation speed. This study provides a more nuanced understanding about the effect of three dimensions of supply chain integration on innovation speed and supply chain performance. More importantly, this study explains the mechanism of using supply chain integration to mitigate the effect of demand uncertainty and complements previous research on innovation. Purpose: Alliances between firms are becoming more common for drug development; however, it is not clear how these alliances affect the time spent on drug development. This study analyzes the effect of firm's alliances on the clinical development time of new drugs by clinical phase. Methods: Datasets of the new drug development program in which the Phase 1 trials were started between 2000 and 2015 were constructed using the Evaluate Pharma's pipeline database. The development time was calculated by measuring the number of days between the initiation dates of a development phase and the date of the subsequent phase, utilizing data from the database. A multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of firm's alliances on the new drug development time at each stage of development, after controlling for the origin of substances, therapeutic indications, drug designation, and firm size. Results: A firm's alliances significantly increased the development times of clinical Phases 1, 2, and 3 by 549.3 days, 617.3 days, and 232.0 days, respectively. However, there was no statistically significant effect on the development time of the approval stage. Conclusion: As a firm's alliances significantly increases the drug development time in the early clinical phases, companies developing new drugs through alliances in the early clinical development stages need to make more efforts to reduce the development time. The literature on sustainable competitive advantages and performance has grown extensively in organizations over the last three decades. However, sustainable competitive advantages have received limited attention from scholars in academic institutions. To contribute to the literature, this research examines how knowledge-oriented leadership stimulates team performance through innovation, eventually directing towards a sustainable competitive advantage in higher education institutions (HEIs). The data was gathered from 64 team leaders and 303 team members from Pakistan's HEIs to assess the model. The results indicate that knowledge-oriented leadership significantly enhances team performance, with this association partially mediated by the speed of innovation. At the same time, no mediating role is observed for the quality of innovation. In addition, team performance and its relationship with a sustainable competitive advantage originated positively. As a result, HEIS should promote knowledge-oriented leadership as a crucial strategy for managing the complex dynamics of innovation, team performance, and sustainable competitive advantages. These institutions should prioritize appointing knowledge-oriented leaders to enhance innovation, team performance, and sustainable competitive advantages. Further implications are conferred. Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Eastern Indonesia are threatened with bankruptcy during the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation occurred due to significantly decreased people’s purchasing power, and most production activities stopped. In light of this issue, this study aims to investigate how well MSMEs’ adaptability and innovation speed in Eastern Indonesia have increased their sales during the pandemic. We collected the data by distributing questionnaires on offline and online channels using Google Forms to MSMEs owners in Maluku and North Maluku Provinces. We eventually gathered 262 pieces of data and analyzed it through the PLS-SEM approach. The results showed that adaptability has a positive and significant effect on sales and the speed of innovation, while innovative speed has no impact on sales. In other words, the innovation speed can also not mediate adaptability to MSMEs sales. The results of this study are expected to benefit MSMEs owners in implementing appropriate business strategies, especially how MSMEs owners have the adaptability and innovation speed to manage their business in this condition of uncertainty. Additionally, this research is expected to provide an empirical contribution to the government of Indonesia in making considerations, policies, and decision-making related to the empowerment of MSMEs during the pandemic and beyond.

Tourists choose island destinations with natural landscapes that can uniquely appeal to tourist destinations. Therefore, it takes the role of human resources (HR), who can manage small islands as tourist destinations. The purpose of this study is to examine the direct impact of human resource development on the management of island tourist destinations, followed by the indirect impact of the adaptability and speed of innovation to HR development on the management of tourist destinations on the islands of Dodola, Maitara, Ternate, and the islands in the Tobelo bay in Eastern Indonesia. Data were obtained using a questionnaire, and 162 respondents met at government offices and managed island tourism. The analytical method used is inferential with the SEM-PLS approach. The analysis results show that HR development influences the management of tourist destinations, adaptability, and innovation speed. Adaptability and innovation speed can mediate HR development in managing island tourist destinations.

Abstract This paper seeks to explore the concept of complacency as a barrier to the sense of urgency within product innovation, by investigating the concept on behalf of interfirm project partners. More specifically, the study aims to understand complacency within the context of an industrial research project in Norway subject to material substitution of an energy transmission tower. As such, the study seeks to give a contextual understanding of complacency for innovation realization (e.g., innovation speed) from a single case study. The study identified different complacency mechanism asymmetries on behalf of the actors, as well as the varying reasons (drivers) to why urgency gaps may occur among actors. The urgency gaps were found to impact a sense of urgency and thus innovation speed negatively. The asymmetries are presented from the drivers: role understanding, competence, project intent, risk and trust. Moreover, the urgency gaps’ implications for interorganizational project collaboration, and how they contribute to theory on industrial product innovation, are explained. The findings contribute with new insights on important mechanisms for how a sense of urgency may be enhanced in research projects subject to interorganizational innovation. Theoretical contributions thus relate to enhanced understanding of complacency asymmetry in product innovation collaboration, and how trust is an important dimension for urgency creation.

This study focuses on investigating the role of innovation speed in mediating the relationship between total quality management and small and medium-sized enterprise performance. Cross-sectional data from 484 Nigerian small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises were collected using judgmental sampling, which was targeted at the owners and managers of small-scale manufacturing enterprises within Nigeria. The obtained data were evaluated using both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Hence, the heuristic model for the relationship was subjected to a string of tests using the partial least squares structural equation modeling technique. The results show that total quality management is positively related to operational performance as well as innovation speed, which has a substantial influence on the nexus between total quality management (TQM) and small and medium-sized enterprises' (SME) performance. The study expands the understanding of innovation, regarding speed and its measures within total quality management, where the five basic dimensions of total quality management are top management quality practices, employee quality management, customer orientation, process management, and employee knowledge and training. Abstract Trust in organizations plays an essential role for efficient innovation implementation. However, trust between managers and employees is under-communicated in relation to innovation speed. Innovation speed is related to innovation adoption, concerning new ways of performing laboratory services within the health sector. The purpose of this case study is to investigate how trust mechanisms may enhance innovation speed by reducing employee decisions to perform defensive routines. The focus is related to trust as a social condition for enhancing innovation acceptance in the context of management and organizing styles subject to the Norwegian Work Life Model. The study found that a lack of employee participation and involvement may result in emotional tension, a sense of uncertainty, disconnect, and various defensive mechanisms towards management and the innovation. Consequently, employees’ attention, loyalty, and responsibility might be redirected away from the innovation.

This study aims at investigating the mediating impact of business intelligence, innovation speed and innovation quality on the relationship between the different components of intellectual capital and competitive advantage in the context of Jordanian companies. To achieve this, the study developed a theoretical framework that depicts the mediation through data that were collected randomly, from the pharmaceutical and medical supplies companies, with a total sample of 569 participants. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling, SEM (CB-SEM), for model fit and Process software for path analysis to estimate the different indirect effects. The findings provide evidence that all mediators serve differently as important mediating mechanisms between the different components of intellectual capital and competitive advantage. Overall, the results of this study show and clarify the mediating mechanism of business intelligence, innovation speed and innovation quality, as mediators through which human capital, structural capital and relational capital improve competitive advantage in the context of Jordanian companies. In the current environment, rapid innovation has become an essential source of time-based competitive advantage. Cooperation is an effective way to achieve rapid innovation. Inter-firm virtual integration is an emerging cooperation mode through information and communication technology (ICT) support. Its impact on rapid innovation needs to be further confirmed. Based on the organizational information processing theory, this work explores the effects of virtual integration on product innovation speed and how guanxi moderates the relationship of virtual integration on innovation speed. Samples of Chinese manufacturing enterprises provide evidence in this study. The results show that inter-firm electronic coordination and collaboration, as two dimensions of virtual integration, play active roles in quickening the product innovation speed. However, these effects become weaker for firms with close guanxi ties. This study provides new evidence for the relationship of inter-firm cooperation on product innovation speed. Digital technology continues to extend the co-creative role of users and user communities as sources of innovation-conducive knowledge. While the potential of user communities in this context is well established, little is known about the capabilities needed to successfully manage the interface with virtual user communities. The paper investigates User Community Sensing (UCS) capability as a measure of firms' ability to anticipate changes and opportunities for innovation by interfacing with relevant user communities. Based on existing research and data from 173 product innovation projects, the study employs structural equation modelling to test the hypothesised effects of this capability on product innovation performance and product innovation speed. The results indicate that UCS capability affects performance positively and indirectly by increasing knowledge about users but has no significant effect on speed. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of intellectual capital (IC) on firm performance, considering the mediating role of innovation speed and quality. We develop a research model based on the IC perspective and innovation literature. We test the model by using structural equation modeling to analyze data collected from 328 high-technology firms in China. The results show that the three components of IC, namely human capital, structural capital, and relational capital, are positively related to innovation speed and quality, which in turn facilitate the operational and financial performance of a firm. The impacts of human and structural capital on financial performance are fully mediated by innovation speed and quality, whereas the impact of relational capital on financial performance is partially mediated. Innovation speed and quality partially mediate the effect of IC on operational performance. As one of the first studies to investigate how IC may influence firm performance through the mediating effects of innovation speed and quality, this study not only contributes to HRM literature on IC and innovation, but also offers managers with insights on how to align their HRM strategies and practices to develop IC when pursuing innovation and performance outcomes. This research seeks to examine the influence of workplace ostracism, T-shaped skills and workplace incivility on knowledge hiding. Furthermore within organizations, the role of knowledge hiding as an obstacle of innovation is also investigated. Based on quantitative research method, data were gathered through questionnaire from 259 respondents working in schools and colleges located in Faisalabad and Sargodha (Pakistan). The proposed relationships were tested through regression analysis. Results revealed that workplace ostracism and incivility have significant positive association with knowledge hiding. On other hand, the relationship between T-shaped skills and knowledge hiding was statistically insignificant. Moreover, the relationship of knowledge hiding with innovation speed was negatively approved. From managerial perspective, the findings of the study are vital and as some essential components of knowledge hiding have been uncovered. Objective of the Study: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between the variables of diversity management, charismatic leadership, innovation speed, innovation performance, and company performance. Methodology/Approach: A survey study was conducted with 427 employees (both technicians and engineers) working at companies that operated in the manufacturing industry in the scope of the research purpose. SPSS 25 and SPSS AMOS programs were used incrementally, and the acquired data were evaluated and analyzed. Originality/Relevance: In this research, white-collar workers constituted our sampling group because they play a key role in product innovation. While gathering the analysis data, the first 500 companies registered in Istanbul Chamber of Industry were determined, and manufacturing companies operating in Istanbul constituted the main part of the study. Main Results: As a result of the analysis, it is understood that diversity management and charismatic leadership have a positive influence on innovation and performance. Theoretical/Methodological Contribution: In terms of innovation and company performance, the study revealed the mediation effect of charismatic leadership linked to diversity management. Striving for competitive advantage pushes firms to innovate at a high speed along innovation contingencies and resource limitations they face. Yet, little is known about how management of contingencies such as absorptive capacity or technology radicalness can impact the innovation speed of firms. In this explorative study, we provide new empirical evidence to the innovation speed literature. We examine to what extent innovation speed is affected by organisational, technological, and relational contingencies that preoccupy firms with open innovation practices. Taking the firm perspective, we track innovation timeline and emphasise the complex trade-offs that firms encounter while innovating. Our results show that many of the contingencies, emphasised by the literature promoting innovation, could slow down its speed. Thus, strengthening competitiveness by accommodating contingencies can hinder time-critical adaptations. The authors examine the effect of customer clusters on a firm's innovation. They argue that knowledge leveraged from customer clusters can help the firm develop innovations. The authors specifically concentrate on the effect of a firm's geographical proximity and diversity of customer clusters on innovation outcomes. In addition to showing the importance of customer cluster proximity on firm innovation, they explore the effect of customer cluster heterogeneity on innovation in an international marketing environment. They test the theoretical model using multicountry data (N = 288) drawn from the U.K. innovation survey implemented by the Economic and Social Research Council, which collected the data across five European countries. This study started from the point that the most important SMEs in the economic growth engine of Korea are prepared to grow through innovation. This study focuses on the fact that existing studies have focused on the open innovation of SMEs has been continued since the external knowledge search became an important concept, but mainly focused on the enterprise performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of innovation speed focusing on exports to Korean SMEs. The hypothesis suggests the depth and breadth of external knowledge search, which is the two methods of open innovation emphasized in the previous studies, and then shows the innovation speed on export performance as a moderating effect. Robust regression analysis was used for the analysis and the sample used for the analysis was valid 1,357 SMEs data. The hypothesis test for the moderation effect was performed by comparing the F-values between models. The proposed hypothesis was adopted and the moderation effect was verified. Arguably the scarcest resource for startups in the commercialization of new products is time. Self-leadership—the self-direction and self-motivation—of the founder may help us to manage time scarcity by improving innovation speed. With limited structure or templates to follow in product development efforts, self-leadership could be a critical resource for technology entrepreneurs under closing windows of opportunities. Drawing from a sample of founders in the high-technology sector, controlling for a variety of venture-related attributes, higher levels of self-leadership was positively related to innovation speed, and even more positively related to innovation speed when entrepreneurs commercialize less radical products. We highlight self-leadership as an important behavioral and motivational resource for speeding product development in the new technology-based venture context. We also shed light on the value of self-leadership in accelerating the development of less radical, or incremental, product innovations. This study suggests external knowledge search as a way of creating knowledge and efforts for reaching out to the innovation and examines the relationship between innovation speed and the breadth and depth of external knowledge search. As a part of efforts to overcome the limitations of the routines of external knowledge search in the domestic market, the efforts of a firm to enter the foreign market have been examined with a moderate effect. Although previous research focused on exploration of external knowledge that is mostly effected in single country or similar industry, this study expands it by introducing the concept of market expansion and empirically inspect the interaction effect. 818 valid samples used in this study are based on the innovation survey published by STEPI and empirical results are as follows. First, the breadth and depth of external knowledge search have a positive impact on innovation speed. Second, export performance as the effect of expanding the market has a moderating effect on the speed of innovation. This study examines the moderating role of technology uncertainty on the relationship between team contextual factors of top management support and T-shaped skills with innovation speed. For the purpose of this study, the data were collected from 227 new products from 147 biotechnology firms in Malaysia. The overall results confirmed the moderating effect of technology uncertainty on the relationship between T-shaped skills, as well as top management support with innovation speed. The results further confirmed that under the high technology uncertainty, this effect is higher in comparison to the low and medium uncertainty. This indicates that the effect of top management support and T-shaped skills on innovation speed improves when technology uncertainty increases. On the practical side, the report equips biotech firms with valuable insights to develop effective strategies.

Changes in the duration of product life cycles (PLCs) have been identified as a driving factor for increasing the speed of new product development (NPD). However, the facilitating potential of increasing the speed to market of new products regarding their success has been subject to extensive debate. In this paper, we shed light on the long-run dynamics between PLC and key innovation performance indicators. A large secondary data set allows us to investigate long-run within-company differences. We observe significantly shrinking PLC on the one hand and significantly increasing NPD speed on the other. A change in the length of the PLC is positively linked to changes in time to market (Ttmarket) and time to volume. Also, we confirm a positive empirical relationship between shorter Ttmarket and quicker implementation of targeted quality and productivity. The increasing relevance of purchasing-marketing functional integration (PMFI) has drawn scholars' attention in recent years. However, more empirical research is still needed that adopts a contingent approach and studies the differentiated role each of these two functions plays in PMFI. Based on Information Processing Theory, the two flows of information that PMFI requires, from marketing to purchasing and vice versa, are used as a PMFI proxy. The study posits a positive impact of these two information flows on a typical NPD performance indicator, namely, its speed, and a positive moderation of environmental dynamism on that effect. Data from 141 Spanish firms are used to conduct a moderated multiple regression analysis to test these effects, showing that the marketing information impact of NPD speed is positive regardless of the level of environmental dynamism. However, the effect of purchasing information on NPD speed is positive when the rate of environmental dynamism is medium or high, but negative when it is low. These results will help managers to assess when each one of these flows should be promoted.
