The present article is an attempt to explore the role of government in mechanising the coir industry of Kerala, which is expected to yield wider policy implications regarding the channels of state interventions in the coir industry for its betterment. The analysis of the government support received by the private sector coir manufacturers reveals that the financial support aims to develop the infrastructure of the firm. However, non-financial assistance like government procurement and participation in government-sponsored trade fairs positively influence the mechanisation index (MI), whereas the provision of subsidised raw materials has a negative influence on MI. In this respect, 'Coir Kerala' is a good initiative by the government to mechanise and thus improve the coir industry of Kerala. The study concludes that proper market interventions are required for efficient utilisation of the production capacity of the firms and thus to improve the performance of the traditional coir industry of Kerala. This, in turn, will boost the mechanisation and thus the performance again. As Shanghai industrialised, its Chinese and European residents suffered the scourge of coal-powered cities: smoke. Air pollution became a multi-sensory reality. Residents could see, smell, feel and taste the smoke that shrouded the city. Inspired by anthropologists and historians of the senses, we mined Chinese- and English-language sources to document the emergence of experiences of air pollution in Shanghai. Concerns began earlier than other historians have appreciated. The vigorous complaints from all parts of Shanghai society illuminate how the city's governments attempted to respond to the crisis and mitigate the toxic consequences of industrialisation. We found many obstacles to the success of the governments' approaches. While other scholars have emphasised Shanghai's fractured governance, we also found evidence of financial conflicts of interest, industry obfuscation and anti-Chinese racism. Our work expands the understanding of the history of air pollution in China and offers a model that can be used to extend global histories of air pollution beyond their traditional focus on Europe and North America. Post-apartheid, the South African economy remains characterised by persistent unemployment and world-leading inequality. Transitioning towards more equal and inclusive economic outcomes is hampered by an industrial base concentrated in powerful firms in upstream resource-based carbon-intensive sectors. Pursuing industrialisation in the context of the push towards decarbonisation and sustainability by significant trading partners depends on a massive investment programme in renewable energy and specific high-emitting sectors and developing linkages between sectors to target a just, equitable, and inclusive transition that tackles the country’s deep-rooted inequalities. This paper evaluates South Africa’s main development finance institution, the Industrial Development Corporation’s role in green industrialisation in South Africa. It investigates whether the investments made and the orientation of the IDC positively impacts the structural transformation of the economy, using disclosed and publicly available data. This article charts a critical history of drawing, as it was taught within “general” schooling in colonial Bombay (now Mumbai), beyond the artisanal workshop, art, and industrial schools. Rather than children’s creative or subjective expression as it is commonly seen today, drawing’s presence in the school curriculum was a sign of the efforts being taken to create a workforce suitable for industrial capitalism, in Britain and in India. Analysing archival sources, and situating them within the broader discourses around colonialism, work, and the industrial subject, the article points out that when drawing was taught in Bombay it was hamstrung by issues metropolitan in origin, viz. course design, inconsistent pedagogic vision, lack of financial outlay as well as local conditions of low industrialisation. Similar problems plagued drawing in Britain. However, colonial power relations held Indian teachers and school-goers responsible for drawing’s “failures” in addressing the crisis of technical skilling and employment generation in India, while in Britain the critique was directed towards the system. Drawing – despite these “failures” – came to be valued as a practice necessary in and of itself. Drawing, the article contends, offered an embodied and verifiable response to wage labour, as seen in its unfolding in the colony, i.e. a moral technology geared towards wage labour. This paper discusses the social commentary of textile production as revealed in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847) and three recent adaptations. First, I focus on Rosamond Oliver's deceptively offhand allusion to the Luddite riots of 1812 to argue that Brontë sets her novel in the 1810s during the upheavals impacting the textile industries of the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West regions. This setting coupled with textual allusions to early nineteenth-century fashions are used to connect the female characters' dress in Jane Eyre to local and global labour issues, colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade. I then turn to the visual representation of textiles in the intermedial adaptations of Jane Eyre by Robert Young (1997), Susanna White (2006) and Cary Fukunaga (2011), which by visually highlighting the material culture of the 1830s and 1840s, move Brontë's narrative from the late Georgian to the early Victorian era. These adaptations overwrite the novel's allusions to early nineteenth-century debates on industrialisation, colonialism and human enslavement in order to privilege its mid-nineteenth-century feminist critique of British marriage laws. In the United States, the conservation movement of the Progressive era (1890–1920) brought new attention to the problem of the ‘wise use’ of resources. Progressive social movements also developed a concern with holistic health and social conditions in rapidly industrialising cities. This paper argues that the formation of the new allied health science of occupational therapy in the early 20th century can be understood as a response to the health and conservation implications of changing relations between labour and resources. An analysis of published sources on the aims of occupational therapy in the Progressive era concluded that the early stage of the profession was structured by dominant Western narratives about humans and nature. Those narratives included the trope of redemption or transformation through labour and the importance of conservation as a response to the squandering of resources, both natural and human. I argue that the early development of occupational therapy was significantly influenced by environmentalist discourse as a therapeutic response to industrialisation and emerging Anthropocene awareness.

This article analyses the sustainability of China’s economic growth in light of global challenges, focusing on macroeconomic changes in recent decades and their impact on the country’s economy. The study covers the period 1962–2022 and uses data from various sources, including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and national statistical data from the People’s Republic of China. Correlation analysis methods are used to assess the impact of socio-economic indicators on economic growth, revealing significant correlations between gross domestic product and various indicators such as external debt, urbanisation, technological development, and the standard of living. The main conclusion of the analysis is that economic diversification and investment in high-tech industries are crucial for maintaining sustainable growth in China. The findings indicate the need for future research assessing the potential for reducing the environmental impact of industrialisation and improving social policies in a changing global economy.

The article presents the achievements of the “Diagnosis of the state of Poland’s spatial economy”, developed in 1981–1983, which critically analyses the effects of the thirty-year impact of the principles of building socialism on Poland’s spatial economy. These effects are related to the elements of the current state of the country’s spatial management, which leads to the conclusion that many of the unfavourable phenomena and processes of that time also occur today, after 30 years of market economy and the democratic system. The article ends with a proposal of research on the contemporary spatial conditions of the country’s development.

This article investigates the significance of food consumption within the context of Gothic literature, shedding light on how seemingly mundane food and drink items are reinterpreted from a cultural memory perspective within this genre. From Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, food in Gothic literature reveals that true danger often lurks within the home. Cultural memory functions as a spectral conduit, conveying messages from the past to serve present purposes. Beginning with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), the way in which food humanises Dr Frankenstein’s unnatural creation, prompts readers to question the true nature of monstrosity. The creature’s diet of nuts and berries, eschewing meat, challenges conventional notions of sustenance and appetite, offering early insights into the impact of industrialisation on food production during the nineteenth century. In Charlotte Brönte’s Jane Eyre (1847), food symbolises strength, weakness and oppression, as evidenced by scenes involving burnt porridge and acts of quiet rebellion through cake. In Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), meals initially serve as a source of comfort and familiarity for Jonathan Harker before they simply turn into fuel to combat the Count. Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca (1938) uses food to underscore social hierarchies and power dynamics. This article presents a theoretical framework for food studies within the context of Gothic literature, exploring the cultural memory aspects associated with consumption in classic Gothic fiction. As a result of increasing industrialisation in various countries and the change in their populations' eating patterns, residents may be shifting from a low-calorie diet to one with a high energy density. People tend to consume fewer fruits and vegetables and instead, they opt for more refined carbs, animal protein, processed meat, and fast food. This highlights how, as globalisation progresses, people are rapidly losing their cultural identities concerning traditional healthy foods and local produce. Fast food intake and lifestyle changes have contributed significantly to the increase in the prevalence of food-related chronic diseases. Adults suffering from diet-related difficulties, particularly chronic illness, have become the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in many countries. Adults' fast food consumption is influenced by factors such as chronological age, gender, socioeconomic level, food availability and accessibility, BMI, physical activity, and nutrition knowledge. This review focuses on aspects that influence people's fast food eating habits, providing insights into how health-related problems associated with fast food consumption can be curbed. Industry 4.0 was born in 2011, for Indonesia it has brought benefits to industrialization and trade starting from 24-hour production automation, time efficiency because the process is fast and connected to the internet for unlimited distances with the help of internet signals, saving minds because AI-based technology is able to think to answer our questions and the ability to store and provide big data, production and trading costs are clearly more efficient because paperless, sending data without couriers, calculating the use of production inputs is more accurate so it is more economical. However, besides the advantages, there are also many challenging problems in Indonesia, starting from misuse of online media platforms, cyber crime (illegal taking of company data/hacking, misuse of other people's personal data for online fraud and illegal investment) which causes state losses of more than Rp. 232, 646 trillion until 2023. Recently, interest in industrialisation has increased again, and reindustrialisation policies have begun to be discussed. Because empirical and theoretical evidence indicates that industrialisation plays a significant role in economic growth and development. Nevertheless, studies analysing the factors affecting industrialisation are limited. In consequence, the main purpose of this paper is to analyse the dynamics of industrialisation in Türkiye over the period 1990-2020. For this purpose, the effects of foreign direct investments (FDI), trade globalisation, and renewable energy, which are thought to affect industrialisation significantly, are investigated. The ARDL bounds test, and the Toda-Yamamoto (1995) causality test are employed in this respect. The findings prove that FDI, trade globalisation, and renewable energy consumption positively impact industrialisation in the long-run. At the same time, Toda-Yamamoto's (1995) causality test results indicate a unidirectional causality from FDI to industrialisation, bidirectional causality between renewable energy and industrialisation and no causality between trade globalisation and industrialisation. In this regard, for sustainable industrialisation, effective policies are necessary for FDI, trade globalisation, and renewable energy. This article models the process of structural transformation and catching‐up in a demand‐led Southern economy constrained by its balance of payments. Starting from the Sraffian Supermultiplier Model, we model a dual‐sector small open economy with a traditional and a modern sector that interacts with a technologically advanced Northern economy. We propose two (alternative) autonomous elements that define the growth rate of this demand‐led economy: government spending and exports. Drawing from the Structuralist literature, productivity in the technologically laggard Southern economy grows by absorbing technology from the Northern economy, by both embodied and disembodied spillovers, and potentially closing the technology gap. The gap affects the income elasticity of exports, bringing a supply‐side mediation to the growth rates in line with the Balance of Payments Constrained Model. We observe that a demand‐led government policy plays a central role in structural change, pushing the modern sector to a larger share of employment than what results under export‐led growth. Such a demand policy is the only way in which partial catching up (in productivity and GDP per capita) can result, and this is facilitated by a global market place in which the balance of payments constraint is relatively soft. Thorstein Veblen gave special importance to work. He claimed that once humans became tool users, their work activity was driven by an instinct of workmanship. This instinct is 'an object of attention and sentiment in its own right' beyond providing provisioning and serving another instinct, that of parental bent, or society's wellbeing. Given appropriate social institutions, 'labor might... assume that character of nobility in the eyes of society at large'. Yet, Veblen took little notice that during his lifetime between 1857 and 1929, the rapid industrialisation of the American economy massively proletarianised workers, greatly degrading their work experience. In Europe, this proletarianisation and degradation of the work process had begun centuries earlier with the rise of capitalism, and greatly accelerated with rapid industrialisation during Veblen's lifetime. Although Veblen addressed how capitalism, as the latest predatory society, exploited workers, he presented industrialisation of the work process as positive for workers. This article first surveys the process of proletarianisation, focussing on the American experience. It then explores Veblen's understanding of the impact of industrialisation on workers and how he missed a far-reaching labour-degrading process that was important in provoking massive violent insurrection, and which had earlier been addressed by political economists as diverse as Adam Smith and Karl Marx. Because he failed to recognise the degradation of the work process that accompanied industrialisation, he missed its contributing role in the explosion of conspicuous consumption by Americans of all classes, the subject of his most renowned work, The Theory of the Leisure Class. This study critically examines the impact of technical education institutions on the early industrialisation of 19th-century Saxony, highlighting the role of the Technischen Bildungsanstalt zu Dresden in equipping the Saxon region with skilled workers, in line with post-Seven Years’ War recovery efforts: Rétablissement. Since the 18th century, educational entities have been established to cater to the technological needs driven by economic and societal imperatives. The study scrutinises the TBA curricula and explores the evolution of course offerings, in alignment with societal requirements. While TBA alumni significantly contributed to Saxony’s machine and railway sectors, the number of skilled workers produced was not sufficient to fully sustain industrialisation. Although many graduates secured employment within the manufacturing sector and contributed as educators, the emigration of professionals to less competitive markets abroad indicated brain drain. Notably, some graduates sought opportunities outside Saxony in German-speaking and non-German-speaking regions, indicating a trend of highly educated workforce emigration. This study reveals that TBA’s influence on Saxony’s industrial progress was substantial and that it contributed to the global technical labour market, underscoring the broader international relevance of technical education. This study re-evaluates the regional and international significance of technical education, offering new insights from a historical perspective.

AbstractCapital inflows, such as foreign aid, can serve as a means to enhance infrastructure development in developing countries. This suggests that foreign aid might have an impact on the level of industrialization in African nations. While existing studies indicate that foreign aid can affect the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector by appreciating the real exchange rate, the veracity of this claim relies on empirical evidence. This paper explores the influence of aid on manufacturing value added using time-series data spanning from 1990 to 2018 for 27 African countries. Employing a panel vector autoregression technique and generating associated impulse response functions, the study scrutinizes the interactions between foreign aid and manufacturing. The analysis is conducted on both the full dataset and subsamples disaggregated based on the income levels of countries. The results indicate that foreign aid acts as a stimulus for manufacturing, primarily through a sustained depreciation of the real exchange rate. This finding holds true for both the overall dataset and the subset of low-income countries. The study attributes this phenomenon to the strategic utilization of aid to enhance infrastructure, leading to a reduction in the price of non-tradables relative to tradables. Consequently, this enhances the profitability and output capacity of the manufacturing sector in African countries. In essence, the results suggest that foreign aid plays a role in influencing or stimulating industrialization in African countries. The study concludes with a discussion on the implications of these findings for industrial policy in African nations.

Industry is the substratum of material production and the economy as a whole. Numerous discussions about the need for new industrialisation make us turn again to the analysis of the state of industrial potential and results of industrial development in Russia. The study aims to explain the performance of the Russian industry in terms of the most relevant and aggregated indicators characterising its functioning, and to formulate its long-term development tasks. The methodological basis of the study is the theory of industrial development. Methods of planning and industrial analysis are used. The evidence is the data for 2012–2022 retrieved from the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation and the Unified Interdepartmental Statistical Information System. The research concludes about the ‘contracted’ development of the Russian industry. The growth rate of the gross value added is more significantly impacted by the dynamics of fixed capital rather than that of labour. Yet the labour contributed greatly to the creation of the new value, which indicates the predominance of labour-intensive technologies, or obsolete capital-intensive technologies. The study empirically confirms that some periods saw a ‘paradox of rapid industrialisation’, that is, a substantially lower rate of economic growth against a higher growth of industry and modernisation of its fixed assets. The general conclusion is that when conducting industrial policy, it is necessary to influence the state of the labour and capital factors in the manufacturing sectors. The industrialisation of the Russian economy needs to be oriented towards the technological substitution through the creation of new fixed assets; in addition, the losses of greatly reduced labour potential should be compensated. A promising avenue is the organisation of analytical planning for the state-owned industry and indicative planning for private industries along with the adoption of a law on the state sector.

Coal was first used in China for ornaments starting about 6000 years ago. Its use as fuel for households and light industry began about 2000 years ago, but coal production and consumption remained low until the end of the nineteenth century due to weak industrialisation. Thereafter, a series of political events drove progressive industrialisation that required the increasing exploitation of the nation's vast coal resources. These events were the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895, the creation of the state of Manchuguo by Japan in 1932, the Communist accession to power in 1949 and the start of opening up in 1978. Advances in mining technology and expanding transport networks allowed coal to become a major source of primary commercial energy, which it remains today. Since 2012, the slowing rate of economic growth combined with the rapid expansion of renewable energy has steadily reduced the share of coal in the energy mix. Standards of safety, resource management and environmental protection were low throughout most of the long history of coal in China. Moreover, mine workers were marginalised and many local officials were directly involved in the mining. Only in this century has the government achieved some success in addressing these challenges. This paper looks at Chinese construction projects in Angola, Nigeria and Ethiopia—the three countries that registered the highest cumulative value of construction projects completed by Chinese firms in sub-Saharan Africa between 1998 and 2019. This paper firstly shows that Chinese construction projects were an important catalyst for structural transformation. Beyond providing critical infrastructure for productive sector activities, the construction boom has induced domestic manufacturing of building materials and second-round demand multipliers. This paper secondly shows that the transformative potential of construction activities is not necessarily fully realised nor stable over time due to the nature of the emerging accumulation processes. In the case of Angola and to a lesser extent in Nigeria, the government failed to adequately support demand and supply structures through complementary industrial and redistributive policies. The Ethiopian case shows that even where there were extensive efforts to support supply capacity, distributional conflicts can derail accumulation processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the state of structural transformation, industrialisation, and development in Africa against the backdrop of decades of pursuing sustainable growth and development on the continent. To meet this objective, the author analysed the share of the manufacturing sector to the total economic output, the technological density of the manufactured exports, and other relevant statistics as measures of this process. The secondary sources deployed to meet the article's objective include relevant journal articles and books. This paper maintains that while regional integration was correctly identified as a vehicle for the continent's economic emancipation, there has been a shortfall in translating that overwhelming consensus into action. The failure to implement this critical agenda explains the continent's current poor state of industrialisation and development. This paper contends that this objective will not be realised until the African states are restructured to be deliberate and intentional about the continent's industrialisation by adopting a developmental approach to regional integration. This contribution aims at: (i) mapping the deindustrialisation and reindustrialisation tendencies over the economic history of the Visegrad countries (Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, henceforth, V4) since 1918 to 2022 by creating a cadastre of applied policy measures and evaluating their effectiveness; (ii) exploring whether the economic mentality of V4 countries allows current reindustrialisation policies to be effectively geared towards Industry 4.0? In order to understand the key features of industrialisation process in the V4s, a broad literature overview places emphasis on the economic characteristics of the region. It is also important to analyse the correlation between industrial policy in the XXth century and the new tendencies at the turn of the millennium by examining whether the current industrial policy mixes are serving economic resilience or grounding critical instability as a form of middle-income trap. Focusing on Spain between 1900 and 1930, a period characterised by significant structural transformations and rapid economic growth, this article shows that the sex ratio at birth (SRB) was abnormally high, at least until the 1920s. Apart from questioning whether female under-registration and different mortality environments alone can explain the results reported here, our analysis of regional information indicates that SRBs were higher in provinces where the economic structure was dominated by agriculture and manufacturing (relative to the service sector). In addition, exploiting the annual variation in low-skilled wages at the province level makes it possible to distinguish between the roles played by under-registration and outright neglect: while higher wages could increase the opportunity cost of registering a female birth (and therefore result in higher SRBs), they could also reduce the pressure to neglect female babies (and therefore result in lower SRBs). We find evidence of both effects (income and opportunity cost) of wages on SRBs between 1914 and 1920 in Spain, a period in which WWI arguably subjected the Spanish economy to an exogenous demand shock. These two effects, however, imply very different discriminatory practices. In fact, on average, the income effect was larger than the effect arising from the opportunity cost, which supports the idea that female neglect around birth was more prevalent than previously assumed during the early twentieth century in Spain. As expected, the relationship between wages and the SRB vanished during the 1920s, along with the unbalanced SRB. These results stress that gender discrimination around birth does not necessarily disappear with economic growth unless this process is accompanied by expanded labour opportunities for women. This article examines the current thrust to digitalize higher education in Zimbabwe as the country strives to attain its vision to become an upper middle-income economy by 2030. In this regard, Innovation and Industrialisation have been added as missions of special emphasis at all education levels. This entailed that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) adopt the Education 5.0 model and accelerate digitalisation of their operations and curricula. Further impetus of the digitalisation drive emerged from the responses to the COVID-19, such as lockdowns and travel restrictions. This article examines the policy framework that was put in place to digitalise curricula and operation systems in HEIs. A desk review of literature was conducted to examine efforts underway to embrace digitalisation as a new feature and future of higher education. The study established that the majority of institutions have tended to adopt externally developed digitilisation models without adequately adapting them to local circumstances. The study recommends the need for distinct digitalisation policies at both Ministry and HEIs levels, to guide and prepare for the 'disruptive' effects of digitalisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing recovery methods from coal mine waste like mudstone and coal fly ash (CFA) is crucial to expanding the alumina supply beyond bauxite. This review explores various approaches for alumina recovery from mudstone and CFA. Six main leaching techniques are discussed—caustic soda, nitric acid, Sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and leaching roasted coal mine wastes. Due to high silica content, these techniques differ from those for bauxite minerals. Alkaline solutions, like sodium and calcium hydroxide, show promise but are cost-intensive. Sulphuric acid, combined with calcium hydroxide or sodium carbonate before roasting, yields efficient results, surpassing 90 % recovery. Microbial extraction also shows promise, but commercialisation faces equipment accessibility challenges. Heat treatment and optimal calcination temperatures are crucial, especially with acid reagents like Sulphuric and hydrochloric acids, preferred for insolubility in silica and better recovery. Sustainable alumina recovery requires further research into economically viable and ecologically friendly technology. This review underscores the need for feasible, high-purity alumina recovery techniques from mudstone and CFA for industrialisation.

Southern African Customs Union (SACU) countries are under pressure to commit themselves to sustainable environmental activities. This study employed data from 2007 to 2021 using quantile regression to determine the heterogenous effects of industrialisation on environmental degradation in SACU countries. Prior to the main results, this study investigated and confirmed the existence of a long-run relationship between industrialisation and environmental degradation. This study confirms the heterogeneous effect of industrialisation on environmental degradation. The results through quantile process estimates demonstrated an inverted U-shaped curve. The inverted U-shape suggests that industrialisation at lower and higher quantiles has a minor effect on the environment compared to medium quantiles, where it has a higher effect. This study found that industrialisation increases environmental degradation in the 4th to 6th quantiles, whereas in the 7th to 8th quantiles, industrialisation reduces environmental degradation. Therefore, it is recommended by this study that to mitigate environmental degradation, firms in SACU countries are encouraged to adopt environment-friendly technologies in their production. The aim of this paper is to explore the rehabilitation strategies for multi-family dwellings on the level of function and techniques. The study employs its own methods of analysis using a sample of selected cases as a reference. Nearly 20% of EU buildings will have to be renovated by 2023, as almost 40% of the existing houses were built before 1980. The environmental impact of construction is among the highest among industrial activities due to the high consumption of resources and the generation of low-value waste at the construction and demolition stages. One way to reduce the environmental impact in this sector is to intervene in the building process, optimising the use of resources and waste generation. The principal objective of refurbishments is to reduce household energy consumption. However, the renovations in the housing sector should not be limited to energy considerations; the functional and technical aspects should also be considered. A new refurbishment model is necessary to focus on providing and improving the habitability of the housing stock and reducing the environmental impact by optimising the use of resources and waste generation. The article presents the achievements of the "Diagnosis of the state of Poland's spatial economy", developed in 1981-1983, which critically analyses the effects of the thirty-year impact of the principles of building socialism on Poland's spatial economy. These effects are related to the elements of the current state of the country's spatial management, which leads to the conclusion that many of the unfavourable phenomena and processes of that time also occur today, after 30 years of market economy and the democratic system. Economic historians have paid due attention to the phenomenon of domestic work, especially in connection with the theory of proto-industrialisation, for decades. However, domestic production has not been a marginal issue even in those economies of European countries that can be considered industrialised. The phenomenon of domestic industry was significant in the Bohemian lands as well as in some other countries of the Habsburg monarchy (e.g. Vorarlberg and Galicia) or East and Southeast Europe until the turn of the 20th century. Both the industrial and protoindustrial forms of production coexisted in the society of Central Europe for a relatively long time. This is what Witold Kula called "the coexistence of anachronisms". This study focuses on the causes of the persistence of protoindustrial forms of production, their field structure, and gender aspects, as well as on the comparison of data from official statistics and from the period press. The mining industry is not only one of Australia's main economic sectors but also one that the country is considered to have managed well. However, little is known about the industry's potential to contribute to the structural change of Australia's economy. We use the national input–output (IO) tables and apply the partial hypothetical extraction method (P‐HEM) within both the Leontief and Gosh IO frameworks to examine the inter‐sectoral linkages of the Australian mining and quarrying sector. Ee find that this sector demonstrates strong backward linkages (BL), but forward linkages (FL) appear to be weak, and they mainly involve non‐metallic materials. The mining and quarrying sector appears to generate linkages with the business services sector and the construction sector, which can potentially contribute to diversifying the economy. Such linkages may be realised via skilling and reallocating skilled labour and technical supplier capacity as well as via developing physical infrastructure that supports existing and new economic sectors. We find that the identified linkage pathways via the construction sector are tied to energy‐intensive but coal‐dependent sectors. Thus, these pathways are vulnerable because of the climate‐related need to move away from combusting coal and invest in cleaner sources of energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
