BeReal has become a popular app among younger social media users, with a premise that privileges a brief, random, and unvarnished look into one's life once a day. Hailed as the 'anti-Instagram' or 'anti-TikTok', the app eschews filters, performance, influencers, and sponsored content in favor of authenticity. While curated authenticity has long been a hallmark of internet culture, BeReal seems to employ authenticity not as a performance strategy but as a value, tapping into criticisms of the inauthentic. Through the walkthrough method of social media app analysis, I employ ethnographic research tenets to analyze how BeReal forwards a different type of authenticity to its users from its discourse, design, interface, and features. The findings are two-fold: First, BeReal privileges authenticity-as-realness instead of authenticity-as-performance, using spontaneity and timed posting windows to severely limit the time one can craft a post. Second, BeReal acts as a panopticon, because the omnipresent possibility of posting means users are always already aware of the potential. Authenticity-as-realness is not uncomplicated; it relies much more heavily on neoliberal self-monitoring and panopticism to be ready for anything, as opposed to a finely tuned and intricately crafted performance with lighting, makeup, and editing. Recent scholarship argues that American Indian political activities are increasingly being understood in the context of gaming and that a growing "rich Indian racism" portrays American Indian nations as rich, greedy, and inauthentic. This article analyzes newspaper coverage on American Indian land claims to test the proposition of rich Indian racism. Data on national coverage show that language that references gaming has characterized much of the reporting on land claims. An analysis of newspaper coverage of land claims in central New York reveals a tendency to describe and characterize American Indian nations and their claims negatively, as greedy, threatening, or unfair.

The popular music industry in Singapore advocates for Western music as being superior to local Singaporean music. Singaporeans are usually skeptical about the quality of Singaporean musicians, because of the “inauthentic” stereotype of Singaporean music. So this paper analyses the culture interaction and Singapore music from some current phenomenon that J-pop, K-pop and other music types become an integral part of music culture in Singapore. At the same time, this paper elaborates Authenticity and its importance in Singaporean music and media industry and its influences.

In the context of uncertainty and anxiety regarding the role of leadership and management, this article explores the relationship between Mintzberg's concept of the distinction between the engaged and disconnected manager, Heidegger's notion authentic and inauthentic being and Benner and Wrubel's distinction between two forms of professional practice attunement: an attunement to technique and an attunement to lived experience. It argues that while Mintzberg outlines the distinction between engaged and disengaged management, he does not develop an understanding of the conditions which lead a manager to be either engaged or disconnected. The role of anxiety in Heidegger's distinction between authentic and inauthentic being and the role of stress and worry in Benner and Wrubel's distinction between an attunement to technique and an attunement to the lived experience of professional practice provides the basis for understanding the relationship between engaged and disconnected management. After developing the theoretical perspectives of Mintzberg, Heidegger, Benner and Wrubel, two examples are presented: one of the way in which an engaged manager experiences anxiety as an opportunity for greater attunement to lived experience and one who experiences anxiety as a condition for disconnection and detachment from the lived experience of his leadership practice. In this paper I briefly explore the possibility of an existential approach to counselling psychology from a Heideggerian perspective. A brief overview of this philosopher's work is presented and a small selection of relevant themes are considered. The article concludes with the consideration that I believe Heidegger's phenomenological method might prove to be a valid starting point for a therapeutic counselling method which aims towards an understanding of what it means to be a human being, existing with others in the world.
