Low absorption in the thin active layer of conventional organic solar cells limits their power conversion efficiency. Structured surface layers are a common approach to diffracting incoming light, thus elongating its path through the active layer, thereby increasing the probability of absorption and hence the power conversion efficiency. While standard periodic structures diffract light into discrete angles, making them optimal only for specific wavelengths, random structures induce broadband, but nontailorable diffraction. Thus, instead, a stealthy hyperuniform structure, designed to exhibit beneficial diffraction properties is implemented: it directs the light into a predefined range of higher angles, prevents diffraction into small angles, and is thus ideal for a strong active path length enhancement. After numerical optimization of the feature height and diameter, the stealthy hyperuniform structure is fabricated in silicon by electron beam lithography and subsequently transferred into a transparent polymer via replica molding. Experimental diffraction images reveal a circular symmetric spectrum, inducing diffraction independent of the azimuthal angle and polarization of the incident light. Hyperuniform disordered photonic structures are a peculiar category of disordered photonic heterostructures located between random structures and ordered photonic crystals. These materials, thanks to the presence of a photonic bandgap, exhibit the advantages of random and ordered structures since they have been shown to support in a small spatial footprint a high density of Andersonlocalized modes, which naturally occur at the bandgap edges with peculiar features like relatively high Q/V ratios. Different localization behaviors have been recently reported in hyperuniform disordered luminescent materials, with a well-established and widely studied design, based on disordered networks. Here, we explore an alternative design, based on circular holes of different sizes hyperuniformely distributed, that we investigate theoretically and experimentally by means of scanning near-field optical microscopy. We report that the spectral features of hyperuniform disordered networks can also be extended to a different design, which, in turn, displays pseudo-photonic bandgaps and light localization. The ability of generating different kinds of hyperuniform disordered photonic systems that share the same theoretical and experimental optical features can largely extend practical potentialities and integration in many optoelectronic applications. In photonic crystals, the propagation of light is governed by their photonic band structure, an ensemble of propagating states grouped into bands, separated by photonic band gaps. Due to discrete symmetries in spatially strictly periodic dielectric structures their photonic band structure is intrinsically anisotropic. However, for many applications, such as manufacturing artificial structural color materials or developing photonic computing devices, but also for the fundamental understanding of light-matter interactions, it is of major interest to seek materials with long range nonperiodic dielectric structures which allow the formation of isotropic photonic band gaps. Here, we report the first ever 3D isotropic photonic band gap for an optimized disordered stealthy hyperuniform structure for microwaves. The transmission spectra are directly compared to a diamond pattern and an amorphous structure with similar node density. The band structure is measured experimentally for all three microwave structures, manufactured by 3D laser printing for metamaterials with refractive index up to n = 2.1 . Results agree well with finite-difference-time-domain numerical investigations and a priori calculations of the band gap for the hyperuniform structure: the diamond structure shows gaps but being anisotropic as expected, the stealthy hyperuniform pattern shows an isotropic gap of very similar magnitude, while the amorphous structure does not show a gap at all. Since they are more easily manufactured, prototyping centimeter scaled microwave structures may help optimizing structures in the technologically very interesting region of infrared., (© The Author(s) 2024. Medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are alloys composed of mixtures of equal or relatively large proportions of three or more elements, and are distinctly different from traditional metallic alloys which contain one or two major components with smaller amounts of other elements. Recently MEAs and HEAs have received extensive research attention because they are found to possess superior mechanical performance, unusual thermal and electronic transport properties, and are resistant to corrosion; however, a fundamental understanding of the atomic structures of these alloys is still largely lacking. In this work, we develop a multihyperuniform (MH) model for disordered medium-entropy alloys (MEAs), in which the normalized infinite-wavelength composition fluctuations for all atomic species are completely suppressed, i.e., a model with hidden long-range order. Using SiGeSn alloy as a representative example, we show that this new type of highly efficient generic computational model results in stable lower-energy states compared to prevailing alloy models with (quasi)random structures, and captures experimentally observed atomic short-range orders in MEAs that are missing in (quasi)random alloy models. The MH model approximately realizes the Vegard's law, which offers a rule-of-mixture type predictions of the lattice constants and electronic band gap, and thus can be considered as an ideal mixing state. The multihyperuniformity also directly gives rise to enhanced electronic band gaps and superior thermal transport properties at low temperatures compared to (quasi)random structures, which open up novel potential applications in optoelectronics and thermoelectrics. Our MH model can be readily applied and generalized to other medium- and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with atomic short-range orders, and may account for some of the previously observed major discrepancies between theory and experiment. Hyperuniformity is evolving to become a unifying concept that can help classify and characterize equilibrium and nonequilibrium states of matter. Therefore, understanding the extent of hyperuniformity in dissipative systems is critical. Here, we study the dynamic evolution of hyperuniformity in a driven dissipative colloidal system. We experimentally show and numerically verify that the hyperuniformity of a colloidal crystal is robust against various lattice imperfections and environmental perturbations. This robustness even manifests during crystal disassembly as the system switches between strong (class I), logarithmic (class II), weak (class III), and non-hyperuniform states. To aid analyses, we developed a comprehensive computational toolbox, enabling real-time characterization of hyperuniformity in real- and reciprocal-spaces together with the evolution of several order metric features, and measurements showing the effect of external perturbations on the spatiotemporal distribution of the particles. Designing light sources with controllable properties at the nanoscale is a main goal in research in photonics. Harnessing disorder opens many opportunities for reducing the footprints of laser devices, enabling physical phenomena and functionalities that are not observed in traditional structures. Controlling coherent light–matter interactions in systems based on randomness, however, is challenging especially if compared to traditional lasers. Here, how to overcome these issues by using semiconductor lasers created from stealthy hyperuniform structures is shown. An on‐chip InGaN hyperuniform laser is designed and experimentally demonstrated, a new type of disordered laser with controllable transitions—ranging from lasing curve slopes, thresholds, and linewidths— from the nonlinear interplay between randomness and hidden order created via hyperuniformity. Theory and experiments show that the addition of degrees of order stabilizes the lasing dynamics via mode competition effects, arising between weak light localizations of the hyperuniform structure. The properties of the laser are independent from the cavity size or the gain material, and show very little statistical fluctuations between different random samples possessing the same randomness. These results open to on‐chip lasers that combine the advantages of classical and random lasers into a single platform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
