Hydropower is an affordable, sustainable way to generate electricity. Research on hydraulic jumps focuses only on determining head loss across the jump, but there are no studies on generating power from the jump. This research aims to utilize energy dissipated from hydraulic jumps for power-generating purposes and further use this power in real-life applications. This research simulates ideal hydraulic conditions to identify the most stable hydraulic jumps, which will be used to generate power. The Seriakos barrage in Egypt was taken as a case study to simulate energy dissipated/power generated from hydraulic jumps generated downstream. This power is then used to simulate lighting up some streets in Egypt according to Egyptian power consumption standards. An Excel spreadsheet was used to mathematically model generated hydraulic jump types, energy dissipated, and generated power. The study found that submerged flow generates maximum power values from hydraulic jumps as opposed to free flow. The research concluded that energy produced by hydraulic jumps at the Seriakos barrage could light up 78 street light bulbs. Although this is a small amount of power, Egypt could meet a significant portion of its energy needs if hydraulic jumps from all its hydraulic structures were utilized for power generation. A sewer system is a principal element of infrastructure in modern cities, accounting for massive amounts of public investments. Corrosion of manholes in the sewer system is a global issue, and millions of dollars are being spent on the maintenance, restoration, and replacement of deteriorated sewer networks. Concrete manholes in the sewer system are deteriorating due to the attack of sulfuric acid produced by microorganisms in a process termed microbial induced concrete corrosion (MICC), which reduces the lifespan of concrete sewer elements. The objective of this paper is to investigate the correlation between the gas- and liquid-phase sewer environmental factors and hydrogen sulfide concentration in the gas phase. The production, emission, and build-up of hydrogen sulfide gas in manholes is identified as a major cause of MICC in manhole shafts. The field study was conducted in more than 200 manholes in the City of Arlington (Texas, US). The data was collected every minute for 48 h to understand the trends of liquid- and gas-phase parameters such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S concentration), liquid and gas temperature, pH, DO, and relative humidity. The study also examines how gas-phase H2S concentrations vary with season; manhole design, including manholes' depth, slope, and presence of drop; and sewer flow conditions such as velocity and turbulence. Although no strong linear correlation was found between liquid-/gas-phase parameters, the manhole categories were found to play a significant role in H2S generation. The manholes with hydraulic jump generated the highest average H2S concentrations, followed by manholes with drops. High turbulence zones were observed in manholes of both categories, leading to H2S stripping from liquid to gas phase. The highest H2S concentration was recorded in summer, suggesting that higher liquid temperature resulted in increased bacterial activity, which generated greater liquid-phase sulfide. Dam break flows have been a focus of attention for a long in the hydraulic engineering discipline. The interest stems from their high hazard potential to human life and property. This research investigates a laboratory dam break flow using a 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and a 2D shallow water Eq. (2D SWE) model. The two numerical models have been compared to measured data regarding flow depth, streamwise surface flow velocity, and point velocity. The results show that as far as a simulation of water depths at gauging stations is concerned, both models are almost at par with an error of about 20% of the mean depth value. Further, the comparison of surface velocity field reveals that though both models are capable of reproducing the salient flow features, e.g., oblique hydraulic jump, wake, etc., the 3D RANS model is more accurate in predicting the jump length and the so-called wet–dry fronts. The important contribution of this research lies in clearly enunciating the tradeoffs between a 2D SWE model and a 3D RANS model. The former model is computationally efficient and accurate as far as flow depth and velocity are concerned while the latter model provides a more complete result output, e.g., vertical flow velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent dissipation, etc. However, for obtaining significant accuracy with a 3D model a more accurate turbulence model than RANS is required which necessitate usage of very refined mesh (~ mm), thus, raising the cost of the simulation manifold. Sills and baffles are appurtenances used to stabilize hydraulic jump in a stilling basin. The force acting on these appurtenances are characterized by the drag coefficient (CD). This paper describes experimental methods carried out in a rectangular channel to analyze the drag characteristics of sill and baffles in free (unsubmerged) and submerged hydraulic jumps. The sills and baffles were designed as per the USBR type III stilling basin guidelines. A calibrated loadcell connected to an Arduino board was used to measure the drag force. Errors in measurements are limited to 1%. The drag co-efficient was obtained for different Froude numbers (F1=U1/√gy1) pertaining to strong jump (4.5–9) for different relative position of sills (xS/y2) and baffles (xb/y2) from the nozzle of the sluice gate. Both forced (unsubmerged) and submerged jumps were investigated. It is seen that the drag coefficient of appurtenances in submerged jumps were lower than those in free jumps. This may be attributed to the reduction in wake size in submerged jumps. Comparisons of the experimental results of the sill with the previous theoretical studies are reasonable. Under large unit discharges, stepped chutes are susceptible to cavitation damage due to lack of entrained air. Among various preaeration devices, the simple-structured abrupt contraction aerator (ACA) has a good performance on mild-slope (V:H=1∶5) stepped chutes with a combined flow pattern consisting of a jet and a local hydraulic jump. To advance the understanding of ACA hydraulics, this paper investigates the effects of stepped chute slope and slit location on jet dynamics. A series of physical experiments were carried out on a steep-slope (V:H=4∶5) stepped chute with varied slit locations. It was found that a jet was generated by ACA, and sufficiently aerated flow skimmed over the chute bottom with no black water, indicating an effective reduction of cavitation damage. The slit location had little effect on the flow patterns and aeration but might raise the flow profiles and enlarge the jet. Based on the experimental data, the empirical formulas for maximum height and distance of the jet are finally presented to provide references for sidewall design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the main interests of researchers is the local scour downstream hydraulic structures due to free hydraulic jump, which can cause massive damage or collapse for hydraulic structures. In this study, a new countermeasure was developed to reduce the maximum scour depth by using two buried plates and a sill downstream of the sluice gate. The results showed that the two buried plates were a very effective tool in reducing the maximum scour depth downstream of the fixed apron. It was found that when the two plates were buried at (LP1/LB = 0.07 with LP2/LB = 0.14) with a sill installed at (LS/LB = 0.1 with hS/LS = 0.14), the maximum scour depth upstream and downstream of the first plate (Ds1 and Ds2) was reduced by 57% and 64%, respectively, and the maximum scour depth downstream of the second plate (Ds3) was reduced by 35% compared to the maximum scour depth for the no-plate condition. Weirs are often used in laboratories, industries, and irrigation channels to measure discharge. The discharge capacity of a structure is vital for its safety and plays an important role in the combined gateweir flow, which is a complicated phenomenon in hydropower. This study carried out experiments on a combined hydraulic structure, which included a compound sharp-crested weir made up of two rectangles along with an inverted semicircular sharp gate. Installed on a straight channel, this structure served as a control instrument. The study aimed to investigate the downstream hydraulic jump characteristics of this combined structure, specifically, the sequent depth ratio (y2/y1), the hydraulic jump height ratio (Hj/y1), the energy loss ratio through the jump (EL/Eu), and the jump length ratio (Lj/y1). The width of the upper rectangle on the weir was set at 20 cm. The width of the lower rectangle (W2) was set at 5, 7, and 9 cm, while its depths (z) were fixed at 6, 9, and 11 cm. The gate's diameters varied between 8, 12, and 15 cm. These measurements were alternated with varying initial Froude numbers (Fn1) ranging between 1.32 and 1.5. The results showed that the dimensions of both the weir and the gate influenced the hydraulic jump characteristics. Empirical formulas were developed to predict y2/y1, Hj/y1, EL/Eu, and Lj/y1 based on the differing dimensions of the combined structure. Empirical models are proposed for all the six characteristics for rectangular and suddenly expanding channels using Buckingham π-method which gives quite satisfactory results when compared with other researchers result. Effectiveness of baffle blocks and sills (with different configurations) were also discussed in dissipating maximum energy. Due weightage has been given to Froude and Reynold's number in present study as reported literature as well. As a result, baffle block and sills caused a significant improvement in sequent depth ratio by an amount of 30%, reduction in relative length of jump ratio and relative length of the roller by an amount of 38% and 37% respectively. This study presents a comprehensive dataset comprising multiple data packages derived from laboratory experiments on steady and unsteady hydraulic jumps interacting with a large-scale Gaussian-shaped bed obstacle in an open-channel flume. The primary objective was to accurately measure the impact of hydraulic jump on the free surface and the bed pressure along the obstacle, ensuring the transferability of the results. A multi-process method was followed: designed experiments were recorded, images were postprocessed, and water level data were digitalized. For steady conditions, the bed pressure along the obstacle were measured by piezometers. The repository data are organized and provided in a single package, supplemented by a second package containing panoramas for each experimental time instant and graphical representations of the data, facilitating rapid evaluation of the outcomes. This study provides versatile data that can be utilized in various ways, particularly for fluvial model validation and studying turbulence-driven phenomena in open-channel flows. The hydraulic jump is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the flow transitions from a supercritical flow to a subcritical flow within a short distance. The hydraulic jump is considered one of the most effective methods of dissipating energy through the stilling basin downstream of the control structures. The energy dissipation in the stilling basin contributes to protecting the area downstream of the control structures from erosion which may cause the collapse of the structure. The aim of this study is to calibrate the Flow 3D program using practical experiments. A three-dimensional numerical simulation was performed using the Flow 3D program to investigate the dissipation of energy due to a hydraulic jump through stilling basins with a negative step and compare the results of the study with the results of the practical experiments. (The simulated experiments in this paper using the Flow 3D program were performed at the National Centre for Water Research, Egypt.) Open-channel flows over a drop structure with a trench, often seen in urban rivers, may cause an oscillating phenomenon of hydraulic jumps depending on the trench geometry and hydraulic conditions. The oscillating hydraulic jumps are accompanied by large-scale water-surface variations with wave breaking, and numerical predictions of such flows are challenging in hydraulics. Using unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations of air-water two-phase flows, we attempted to predict an oscillating hydraulic jump at a drop structure with a trench observed in our laboratory experiment. Several high-Reynolds-number turbulence models were applied, and the effects of turbulence models and grid resolutions on predicting the oscillating hydraulic jump were investigated. Turbulence models other than the k–ω SST model resulted in a steady-state flow with no oscillations regardless of the grid resolution. The k–ω SST model succeeded in predicting the oscillating hydraulic jump using a fine grid while the flow became a quasi-steady state using a coarse grid. Moreover, the period of the oscillation and the flow fields are in good agreement with the experimental results. The k–ω SST model has the ability to predict oscillating hydraulic jumps, including wave breaking, because this model accurately simulates flows with separations or stagnations under adverse pressure gradients. With ever increasing integration density of electronic components, the demand for cooling solutions capable of removing the heat generated by such systems grows along with it. It has been shown that a viable answer to this demand is the use of direct liquid jet impingement. While this method can generally be scaled to the cooling of large areas, this is restricted by the necessity of coolant flow rate scaling. In this study, the benefits and restrictions of using increased nozzle pitch to remedy the increasing demand for overall flow rate are investigated. To this end, a model is validated against experimental findings and then used for computational fluid dynamics simulations, exploring effects of the pitch change for micro-scale nozzle diameters and nozzle-to-target spacings. It is found that while this method is efficient in adjusting the tradeoff between total coolant flow rate and pressure drop up to a certain pint, the occurrence of a hydraulic jump in the cavity causes a deterioration of its effect for large nozzle pitches. This paper analyzes the dam-break flow propagation over a stair using a novel version of the weakly compressible moving particle semi-implicit method, which was improved with the particle shifting technique and the quintic kernel function. The proposed method was validated with the experimental data of dam-break propagation. The simulation was conducted in two scenarios, in the first of which an obstacle-shaped stair was located in the flow direction, and the collision of the water volume with the stair was modeled through the proposed approach. The results were then compared with those obtained from the finite-volume method (FVM) in STAR-CD. In the second scenario, the dam-break flow descended a stair, reaching the bed and propagating in two directions: toward the right wall and backward near the stair wall. The submerged hydraulic jump was created near the stair wall because the flow did not have enough length to make the conjugation depth. The simulation results from both scenarios were consistent with those of the FVM solver. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis was performed by calculating error norms, resulting in values within the 10–4 range. The analysis indicated a high level of accuracy and consistency between the simulated results and the reference data. Hydraulic jump is used for dissipation of kinetic energy downstream of hydraulic structures such as spillways, chutes, and gates. In the present study, the experimental measurements and numerical simulation of the free hydraulic jump by applying Flow-3D software in six different conditions of adverse slope, roughness, and positive step were compared. It should be noted that two turbulence models including k-ε and RNG were used for numerical simulation. Based on the results, simulation accuracy using the RNG model was more than the k-ε model. The statistical indices of NRMSE, ME, NS, and R2 for comparing the water surface profile were obtained at 34.3, 0.0052, 0.995, and 983 for the application of the RNG model, respectively. Also, using the RNG model, the values of these indices for the velocity profile were obtained at 14.92, 0.127, 0.9982, and 962, respectively. In general, the error of the simulated water surface and velocity profile were obtained at 5.31 and 12.4 percent, respectively. Moreover, the maximum error of the numerical simulation results of D2/D1, Lj/D2, and Lr/D1 was ±12, ±12, and 16%, respectively. Therefore, the use of Flow-3D software with the application of the RNG turbulence model is recommended for numerical simulation of the hydraulic jump in different situations.

This study reported and discussed turbulence characteristics, such as turbulence intensity, correlation time scales, and advective length scales. The characteristic air–water time scale, including the particle chord time and length and their probability density functions (PDFs), was investigated. The results demonstrated that turbulence intensity was relatively greater on a rough bed in the roller length, whereas further downstream, the decay rate was higher. In addition, the relationship between turbulence intensity and dimensionless bubble count rate reflected an increase in turbulence intensity associated with the number of entrained particles. Triple decomposition analysis (TDA) was performed to determine the contributions of slow and fast turbulent components. The TDA results indicated that, regardless of bed type and inflow conditions, the sum of the band-pass (Tu′) and high-pass (Tu″) filtered turbulence intensities was equal to the turbulence intensity of the raw signal data (Tu). Tu″ highlighted a higher turbulence intensity and larger vorticities on the rough bed for an identical inflow Froude number. Additional TDA results were presented in terms of the interfacial velocity, auto- and cross-correlation time scales, and longitudinal advection length scale, with the effects of low- and high-frequency signal components on each highlighted parameter. The analysis of the air chord time indicated an increase in the proportion of small bubbles moving downstream. A survey on bubble clustering in air–water flow processes may provide significant insights into turbulent two-phase flow. These processes have been studied in plunging jets, dropshafts, and hydraulic jumps on a smooth bed. This study conducted experiments to investigate the impact of bottom obstacles, specifically broad-crest weir-type and cylindrical obstacles, on the flow within a sewer pipe. It was observed that these two types of obstacles, when possessing the same cross-sectional area and length, exhibited nearly equivalent hydraulic responses for both supercritical and subcritical flows. The obstacle height was found to be the primary factor responsible for choking and the transition between different flow regimes. The results of the one-dimensional analysis show that the threshold value of obstacle height depends on the approaching flow conditions, including the Froude number and the filling ratio that is defined as the flow depth to the pipe diameter. In the context of a partially blocked sewer, the relationships established by using the one-dimensional model between the size of the bottom obstacle and the inflow characteristics enable the identification of flow regimes, assessment of reduced hydraulic capacity, and evaluation of local energy loss. The findings of this study elucidate the hydraulic behavior of obstructed sewers, contributing to the development of more effective strategies for the identification of obstructions through monitoring data. Hydraulic jump pressure field analysis is essential to assess slab stability in dissipation basins. This study is aimed to modelling non-dimensional extreme pressure coefficients of the minimum pressure fluctuation (CP−) and maximum pressure fluctuation (CP+) using experimental data with three deep learning (DL) techniques. Pressure coefficients were estimated using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) methods. For the CP− coefficient related to the tested dataset, the correlation coefficient (CC)=0.894 and Willmott’s index of agreement (WI)=0.944 are achieved using the LSTM model, compared with 0.892 and 0.936 for CNN; and 0.892 and 0.943 for GRU. For the CP+ coefficient, CC=0.910 and WI=0.950 are attained using the LSTM model, compared with 0.903 and 0.941 with CNN; and 0.905 and 0.945 with GRU. The results indicate the excellent performance of the LSTM model for estimating pressure coefficients. With laboratory conditions and the experimental data domain framework used in this study, it is shown that the DL models have been successful for modelling very complex systems. Therefore, DL techniques are recommended for estimating extreme pressure coefficients with a reduction in the need to perform expensive experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twin tungsten electrode-wire electrode indirect arc welding (TTW-IAW) is a new welding method, in which the twin tungsten electrodes are connected to the power source together with the welding wire, while the base metal is not connected to the power source, so that the indirect arc is formed between the twin tungsten electrodes and the welding wire. Currently, only the arc characteristics and the droplet transition behavior have been studied, which limits the application of this process in practical welding. In this paper, the thin-plate butt welding process is applied for the first time in TTW-IAW, and the effects of process parameters on weld formation, microstructure, and its hardness are investigated. Additionally, the formation mechanisms of burn-through and hump defects are revealed by the static model and hydraulic jump model of the molten pool, respectively. The results show that TTW-IAW achieves stable weld formation at a maximum welding speed of 600 mm/min, a fourfold increase compared to conventional cold-wire single-TIG welding (conventional cold-wire STW), which reflects its advantages of large deposition rate and high welding efficiency. The degree of influence of the welding current on the penetration of base metal is greater than the welding speed, and the increase in welding current is conducive to the increase in the base metal penetration and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) width, while the increase in welding speed can reduce the convex height of the weld. However, excessive welding currents cause the downward component of arc force and droplet impact to be increased and the upward component of surface tension to be decreased, which results in destabilization of the molten pool, leading to the formation of burn-through defects. Excessive welding speed causes the flow rate of the liquid in the molten pool to be increased and the critical value for the occurrence of a hydraulic jump is exceeded, leading to the formation of a hump. This work presents an experimental study of the fluctuating properties of hydraulic jump rollers for high-Froude-number and pre-aerated inflow conditions, to investigate the validity of empirical relationships in the literature that are derived typically from experiments for smaller Froude numbers and clear-water approach flows. The jump roller fluctuations are evaluated in terms of the dimensions of the roller surface profile, the fluctuation magnitudes and frequencies of the instantaneous jump toe positions and water elevations, including at the tailwater surface, and the formation frequency and advection velocity of internal vortices in the shear layer. The effects of pre-aeration are found primarily in the length-scale properties such as jump length and surface fluctuation magnitudes, while the time-scale properties such as characteristic frequencies of the unsteady motions are not affected. Extrapolation of existing quantitative prediction of jump roller dynamic properties to high-Froude-number flow conditions should be performed carefully. An assessment of the fluctuating bubble counts within fixed time intervals yields close frequencies between the bubble grouping motions in the shear layer and the jump toe and tailwater wave motions, thus implying possible correlations between the roller surface deformations and air entrainment. Free falling or controlled high velocity jets from diversion weirs or dams results in the scouring of downstream riverbeds. Monitoring and analysing scouring is a complex problem as it depends on several factors, such as the discharge characteristics from the reservoir, sediment concentration of the discharge, tail water levels, etc. Timely monitoring of dam apron scour helps in adjusting the channel capacity downstream. This paper aims to propose an experimental technique to monitor the scour at the downstream apron of free overflow spillway using piezoelectric patches. A lab-based hydraulic jump was made through an ogee spillway in the flume. A sand bed was constructed to simulate soil scour (in the actual scenario) caused due to hydraulic jumps. Piezoelectric patches were arranged in optimised distance and depth to monitor the onset and severity of scour during the jump. The experimental piezo-induced voltages were measured, which indicate the different stages of scour phenomena, and a normalised scour depth was plotted to highlight the efficiency of the proposed technique. A statistical based signal index has been proposed for better reliability of the proposed study. Small-scale processes at the southwestern boundary of the Ulleung Basin (UB) in the Japan/East Sea (JES) were examined using combined ship-based and moored observations along with model output. Model results show baroclinic semidiurnal tides are generated at the shelf break and corresponding slope connecting the Korea/Tsushima Strait with the UB and propagate into the UB with large barotropic-to-baroclinic energy conversion over the slope. Observations show high-frequency internal wave packets and indicate strong velocity shear and energetic turbulence associated with baroclinic tides in the stratified bottom layer. Solitary-like waves with frequencies from 0.2N to 0.5N (buoyancy frequency N) were found at the edge of the shelf break with supercritical flow. For subcritical flow, a hydraulic jump formed over the shelf break with weakly dispersive internal lee waves with frequencies varying from 0.5N to N. These high-frequency lee waves were trapped in the stratified bottom layer, with wave stress similar to the turbulent stress near the bottom. The power loss due to turbulent bottom drag can be an important factor for energy loss associated with the hydraulic jump. Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates of ∼10−4 W kg−1 were found. Large downward heat and salt fluxes below the high-salinity core mix warm/salty Tsushima Current Water with cold/low-salinity JES Intermediate Water. Mixing over the shelf break could be very important to the JES circulation since the calculated diapycnal upwelling (1–6 m day−1) at the shelf break and slope is substantially greater than the basin-averaged estimate from chemical tracers and modeling studies. Significant Statement: The Japan/East Sea (JES) is a marginal sea, enclosed by Japan, Korea, and Russia. This study describes mixing processes over the shelf break connecting the northern Korea/Tsushima Strait (KTS) with the southern Ulleung Basin (UB), where the warm, high-salinity Kuroshio water carried by the Tsushima Current interacts with southward-flowing subsurface water masses in the JES. Our analysis suggests that the shelf break and slope between the KTS and the UB are vital areas for water-mass exchange in the southern JES. This article examines the impact of different inflow conditions on hydraulic jumps, specifically focusing on the free-surface properties and energy loss. The authors conducted experiments using LiDAR to measure jump characteristics under partially and fully developed inflow conditions. They also discuss the calculation of head loss in a jump and provide equations and data from previous studies to support their findings. The article concludes that energy loss is larger under fully developed inflow conditions compared to partially developed inflow conditions, but further research is needed to fully understand the effect of inflow conditions on energy dissipation in jumps. In the present study, a one-dimensional governing equation with a vertical acceleration term is used to analyse the free surface profile of various types of jumps. Initially, the surface profile of various types of jumps are reproduced analytically by using a suitable eddy diffusivity term. The approximations of the surface profile for various jumps are then verified numerically. Based on the comparisons, an empirical relationship between the Froude number and the turbulent diffusivity coefficient is established. The proposed empirical relationship is used in the governing equation to compute the various jumps, where an implicit two dimensional flow is assumed. The obtained results are compared with the experimental data to assure the transition of flow from undular jump to breaking jump. The comparisons of numerical results of wave profiles, pressure distribution, wave length and wave amplitude with the existing experimental data for various Froude numbers indicated the suitability of the proposed empirical relationship. A high‐resolution model in conjunction with realistic background wind and temperature profiles has been used to simulate gravity waves (GWs) that were observed by an atmospheric radar at Syowa Station, Antarctica on 18 May 2021. The simulation successfully reproduces the observed features of the GWs, including the amplitude of vertical wind disturbances in the troposphere and vertical fluxes of northward momentum in the lower stratosphere. In the troposphere, ship‐wave responses are seen along the coastal topography, while in the stratosphere, critical‐level filtering due to the directional shear causes significant change of the wave pattern. The simulation shows the multi‐layer structure of small‐scale turbulent vorticity around the critical level, where turbulent energy dissipation rates estimated from the radar spectral widths were large, indicative of GW breaking. Another interesting feature of the simulation is a wave pattern with a horizontal wavelength of about 25 km, whose phase lines are aligned with the front of turbulent wake downwind of a hydraulic jump that occurs over steep terrain near the coastline. It is suggested that the GWs are likely radiated from the adiabatic lift of an airmass along an isentropic surface hump near the ground, which explains certain features of the observed GWs in the lower stratosphere. In an effort to capture the continuous hydraulic jump and flow structure for a jet impinging on a disk, we recently proposed a composite mean-field thin-film approach consisting of subdividing the flow domain into three distinct connected regions of increasing gravity strength (Wang et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 966, 2023, A15). In the present study, we further validate our approach, and examine the characteristics and structure of the circular jump and recirculation. The influence of the disk radius is found to be significant, especially in the subcritical region. Below a disk radius, the jump transits from type Ia to type 0 after the recirculation zone has faded. The supercritical flow and jump location are insensitive to the disk size, but the jump length and height as well as the vortex size are strongly affected, all decreasing with decreasing disk radius, exhibiting a maximum with the flow rate for a small disk. The jump is relatively steep with a strong recirculation zone for a high obstacle at the disk edge. Comparison against the Navier-Stokes solution of Askarizadeh et al. (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 4, 2019, 114002; Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 146, 2020, 118823) for the weak and intermediate surface tension suggests that the surface tension effect is unimportant for a high obstacle for a jump of type 0 or type Ia. The film thickness at the disk edge for a freely draining film is found to comprise, in addition to a static component (capillary length), a dynamic component: h∞ ~ (Fr/r∞)2/3 that we establish by minimizing the Gibbs free energy at the disk edge, and, equivalently, is also the consequence of the flow becoming supercritical near the edge. By assuming negligible film slope and curvature at the leading edge of the jump and maximum height at the trailing edge, we show that the jump length is related to the jump radius as LJ ~ Re(Fr²/rJ5)1/3. The vortex length follows the same behaviour. The energy loss and conjugate depth ratio exhibit a maximum with the flow rate, which we show to originate from the descending and ascending branches of the supercritical film thickness. The presence of the jump is not necessarily commensurate with that of a recirculation; the existence of the vortex closely depends on the upstream curvature and steepness of the jump. The surface separating the regions of existence/non-existence of the recirculation is given by the universal relation Re10/3Fr² = 9r∞9/50. The jump can be washed off the edge of the disk, particularly at low viscosity and small disk size. Major failures of spillway occur due to the inadequate or inefficient design of the spillway. In the Khadakwasla dam spillway, Pune (Maharashtra) has erosion and scouring on the spillway bed. The roller bucket is the alternative to reduce the kinetic energy and minimize the length of the hydraulic jump. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop appropriate energy dissipators to intend for high discharges. To address these concerns, the current study concentrates on resolving them by implementing plain and slotted roller buckets for the ogee profile stepped spillway. The proposed approach involves combining roller buckets and stilling basins, integrating appropriate steps designed for the ogee profile stepped spillway. This is achieved through the creation of a physical hydraulic model in the laboratory, with a scale ratio of 1:33. A comprehensive model study was conducted and the performance was validated using the Froude model law and continuity equation for a design discharge rate of 900 m3/s. Performance evaluation of plain and slotted roller bucket for ogee and stepped spillway illustrated that 82% of specific energy is eliminated by a plain roller bucket and 78% by a slotted roller bucket. In a stepped spillway, 58% of specific energy is eliminated by a plain roller bucket and 57% by the slotted bucket. Hence, in this device, the ogee spillway with a plain bucket is more reliable than the stepped spillway and helpful in reducing the intensity of specific energy over the chute surface of the spillway at a low head of 4 m. Internal waves drive ocean mixing and enhance the transport of heat, momentum and other tracers in shelf seas. We collected observations of mixing over a 30‐day period from three cross‐shore moorings placed on the 330, 200 and 150 m isobaths on the offshore side of a pelagic ridge on the Australian North West Shelf. The region is forced by energetic surface and internal tides, exhibits non‐linear internal waves, experiences flow‐topography interactions, and is subject to episodic intense wind events. This complex forcing drove energetic diapycnal mixing at all sites. We identified five dominant internal wave forcing categories: mode‐1 waves at low‐frequency (time scales from double the buoyancy period to 4 hr), mode‐1 waves at high‐frequency (HF) (time scales between the buoyancy period and double the buoyancy period), mode‐2 waves, internal bores, and internal hydraulic jumps. Overall, just 15% of mixing events accounted for 90% of the total observed heat flux over the record. Mixing during internal wave events accounted for as much as 50% of the total heat flux in some locations. Of the internal wave categories, HF mode‐1 waves were the most significant contributors to the total heat flux at all sites (∼20%). On the other hand, internal bores made significant contributions to mixing only at the 200 and 150 m moorings; they made no contribution to mixing at the 330 m mooring. At the shallowest mooring, the different internal wave categories all made similar contributions to the total flux, indicating an increasingly complicated relationship between the evolving internal wavefield and the mixing. Plain Language Summary: Internal waves propagate along the density gradients found beneath the ocean's surface layer, analogous to surface waves propagating along the sharp density gradient where air and water meet. These waves play an important role in the distribution of nutrients, heat, contaminants, and other tracers in the ocean, especially in coastal regions where the waves break. The density structure of the ocean, the tidal and wind forcing, and the seabed features result in many different types of internal waves, each of which travel and break differently. In this work, we examine the mixing caused by different types of internal waves as they travel up and over a subsurface ridge on the Australian North West Shelf. We found that most of the significant mixing resulted from relatively rare events, which often occurred during internal wave forcing events. The magnitude of mixing increased in shallower waters due to internal waves breaking and causing energetic turbulent flows. However, the wave types that were the most significant for mixing changed depending on the location on the shelf and the depth. High‐frequency internal waves were generally the most significant contributor to mixing. Internal bores, a class of waves moving upslope near the seabed, did dominate the total ocean mixing near‐bottom at some locations. In this study, a modified form of the total mechanical energy budget equation is developed for 3-D turbulent flows with different hydraulic regimes in open-channel transitions, from which the effect of all turbulence parameters can be evaluated by applying some equalizations and RANS numerical simulations. The total energy equation is also used to extract an explicit relationship for energy loss based on turbulence parameters. The findings are presented in the form of the application of the relationship to calculate the energy loss based on simulation results for subcritical turbulent flow and hydraulic jump in open-channel transitions, which leads to identifying the effect of non-homogeneity and anisotropy of turbulence on flow energy balance. The results show that the work done by viscous shear stresses, the viscous diffusion of turbulence, and the turbulent diffusion have little to no effect on the total mechanical energy budget of open-channel turbulent flows; instead, the effect of the variations of turbulent kinetic energy and the work done by turbulence stresses is more significant. The martian North Polar layered deposits (NPLD) are composed of alternating water‐ice and dust‐rich layers resulting from atmospheric deposition and are key to understanding Mars climate cycles. Within these deposits are spiral troughs whose migration affects deposition signals. To understand the relationship between NPLD stratigraphy and Martian climate, we must identify modern‐day drivers of NPLD ice migration. Prevailing theory posits migration driven by upstream‐migrating bed undulations bounded by hydraulic jumps, caused by katabatic winds flowing over trough walls with asymmetric cross‐sectional relief. This is supported by trough‐parallel clouds, whose formation has been attributed to hydraulic jumps. We present a cloud atlas across the Martian north pole using ∼13,800 THEMIS images spanning ∼18 Earth years. We find trough‐parallel clouds in ∼400 images, with regions nearer to the pole having higher cloud frequency. We compare spiral trough geometry to our cloud atlas and find regions with trough‐parallel clouds often correlate with metrics associated with modern‐day sublimation‐deposition cycles (i.e., relief and asymmetry), but not always. In some regions, troughs with morphologies conducive to cloud formation have no clouds. Overall, trough geometry varies greatly across the deposits, both within and between troughs, suggesting localized differences in deposition relative to migration, varying katabatic wind intensities, differing past climatic states influencing the troughs, varying trough initiation properties, or the possibility of additional mechanisms for trough initiation and migration (e.g., in situ trough erosion). Understanding what controls trough shape variability across the NPLD and how these controls change through time and space is key when interpreting Martian paleoclimate. The leading theory suggests that their migration is driven by ice ablation from winds that flow down the higher trough wall, and deposition (and cloud formation) when the wind hits the trough floor and decelerates. We present an updated record of cloud coverage across the ice cap using orbital images spanning ∼18 Earth years and analyze ∼3,000 trough cross‐sections to compare trough shape to cloud location. We find regions with clouds often correlate with trough shapes associated with modern‐day sublimation‐deposition cycles (wall asymmetry), but often asymmetric troughs have no clouds, or the troughs are symmetric. The fact that trough shape changes across the ice cap suggests that ice transport processes are variable and need to be considered when interpreting paleoclimate. This paper investigates experimentally the changing of a hydraulic characteristic of combined hydraulic structure owing to the existence of dike structure. Different models of combined structures are used with rectangular gates and rectangular weirs, respectively. Also, the location of the dike structure is considered. A dike is located upstream, downstream, and on both sides of the combined hydraulic structure. Discharge quantity, average downstream water depth, discharge coefficient, and Reynolds number are adopted to describe the alteration in hydraulic behavior of a combined structure. While the relation between upstream Froude number and downstream Froude number, as well as the relation between downstream Froude number with distance, are employed to illustrate the interactive response between dike and combined structure, From the study, the relation between Froude number at downstream and non-dimensional downstream distance as well as the relation between non-dimensional downstream water depth and non-dimensional distance reveal how the dike location effects on water depth and flow velocity, which lead to a change in the type of flow. Here, the dike position is shared in the form of a hydraulic jump at downstream of the combined structure. The experimental data were statistically analyzed to ensure their validity and reliability. The importance of this study is concentrated on how the location of the dike structure is shared in the alteration in the hydraulic characteristics of the combined hydraulic structure, especially the rise in the water depth at downstream, in addition to the change in the hydraulic jump height and energy losses. Analytical investigations of heat transfer during the vertical impingement of an unsubmerged axisymmetric liquid jet on a horizontal plate have been limited to the regions ahead of the jump. This limitation is due to the complex flow physics in the jump region arising from sudden changes in the flow field. This is addressed in here by extending the averaging theory (AT) introduced by Bohr et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 79, issue 6, 1997, pp. 1038–1041) which was further developed by Watanabe et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 480, 2003, pp. 233–265), to describe the heat transfer problem in circular hydraulic jumps including separation. The applicability of the resulting theory to determine the temperature field in the jump region is evaluated using the data available in the literature and also by means of fully resolved numerical solutions. Good agreement is observed for moderate Prandtl numbers. However, for sufficiently high Prandtl numbers, deviations become notable. The reasons for the deviations according to their relevance are (i) monotonically decreasing temperature profile inherent to the AT, whereas the fully resolved numerical solutions exhibit a local maximum in the temperature profile away from the plate; and (ii) inapplicability of the concept of dividing the flow field into a region affected and a region unaffected by heat transfer according to the thermal boundary layer thickness. This concept leads to the overestimation of the temperature close to the wall and to the existence of a threshold Prandtl number, for which the thermal boundary layer thickness does not meet the free surface anymore. A hydraulic jump phenomenon is exciting in turbulent flow as it causes large-scale turbulence and high-energy loss. This paper investigates the hydraulic jump characteristics of right triangular prism rough beds. The renormalization group RNG k-ε turbulent model and the volume of fluid (VOF) method in a CFD model are utilized to simulate hydraulic jumps. A total of 210 numerical simulations of four new types of rough beds were performed with an initial Froude number (Fr1) ranging from 4.8 to 9.4, the non-dimensionless wave steepness values of 0.67 ≤ t/s ≤ 1.33, and the distances between roughness elements of 0 ≤ Ls/y1 ≤ 2.67. This study found that arranging the right triangular prism rough elements in a stilling basin increased bed shear stress and energy loss. At the same time, they reduced sequent depth and jump length by about 22% and 50% compared to a smooth bed, respectively. In addition, the entropy production rates are also used to analyze energy dissipation, which clearly shows that the characteristic shape of a rough bed significantly influences the hydraulic jump length. Equations and plots that specify the relationships between the hydraulic jumps and study parameters are helpful guidelines for defining the rough bed dimension when designing or repairing a stilling basin for low-head irrigation works and highway sewers. This paper presents a methodology for estimation of hydrodynamic loads acting on the bottom and at the walls of a stilling basin of a stepped chute with converging walls, based on the pressure measurements at the selected points of a scale model. This is the first study of hydrodynamic loads for this type of structure, and the first one of the loads on the stilling basin walls in general. For selected flow discharges, step heights and hydraulic jump submergence ratio, the hydrodynamic pressures were measured at a significant number of points, providing the spatio-temporal distribution of relevant hydrodynamic loads. The most influential effect proved to be a convergence angle of the chute walls. Based on these measurements, appropriate regression expressions were proposed for predicting hydrodynamic loads. These expressions show good agreement with measurements, offering a reliable tool for the structural design of stepped spillway stilling basins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flume experiments with a uniform cohesionless sand with ${d_{50}} = 0.9{\rm{mm}}$ d 50 = 0.9 m m were utilized in the current study to examine the local scour process around a single emergent cylinder under various geometrical circumstances and with a various flow characteristic that simulates an inundating tsunami flow. This single emergent cylinder represents a piloti-type column located over a movable bed material because piloti-type columns are used to elevate the building structures from the ground level. In the experiments, it was noted that the maximum scour depth probably occurs at the cylinder's upstream face, resembling local scour around a scaled-down bridge pier in an open channel. Additionally, the scour hole around the cylinder is shallower the smaller they are, as are the horseshoe vortices that surround them. Furthermore, the effects of the surface bow-wave, hydraulic jump detachment and the wall-jet over the front face of the emerging cylinder were used to identify the relationship concerning the scouring pattern and selected flow characteristics over a piloti-type emergent column under tsunami flow. Empirical formulae have been finally developed to determine the maximum scour depth in front of the cylinder, which is beneficial to characterize the stability of the piloti-type columns, considering the specified Froude number conditions. In the present study, the performance of the perforated screens in double-wall mode was investigated through laboratory experiments. Screens had circular, square, and triangular shapes of openings with a porosity of 45% per unit depth of the screens. The screens were placed vertically with the first screen placed at a distance of 1.5 m from the sluice gate and second screen at a gap of 25 mm downstream of the first screen. The supercritical flow through the sluice gate collided with the screens and forced hydraulic jump was created in the immediate upstream of the screens. Froude number F1 of the supercritical flows approaching the screens varied from 3.20 to 19.40 in all experiments. The relative energy dissipation between the screens upstream and downstream was more than that of the classical hydraulic jumps. Furthermore, it was found that this relative energy loss in the case of the double screen having different shapes of openings in the screens was marginally more than that of the double screen, both having similar shapes of openings. The value of the downstream Froude number of the screen, F2, varied from 1.01 to 1.91, with an average value of 1.41. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study used existing studies and incorporated Pi theory to establish the connection between the sequent depth ratio (y2/y1) and the influencing factors (Fr1 and M1) on the hydraulic jump on a smooth horizontal trapezoidal channel, using a physical model with a side slope of 1:1. The study proposed four equations, from which the empirical equation (Y3) was used to calculate the y2/y1 ratio of the steady jump (4.0 < Fr1 < 9.0). An analysis of statistical indicators for (Y3) showed that the maximum error was 7.4%, R² was 0.98, and other statistical indicators were close to the ideal point at zero (MSE = 0.027, RMSE = 0.163, MEA = 0.129, and MAPE ≈ 2.2%). Furthermore, statistical analysis for test data also provided good results (R² = 0.94, MSE = 0.107, RMSE = 0.327, MEA = 0.25, and MAPE ≈ 3.7%), and the maximum error reached 8.8%. Hydraulic structures, such as barrages, play an important role in the sustainable development of several regions worldwide. The aim of this novel study is to identify the critical hydraulic parameters (CHPs) of Taunsa Barrage, built on the Indus River. These CHPs, including free surface profiles, flow depths, Froude number, velocity profiles, energy dissipation and turbulence kinetic energy, were investigated using simulation via FLOW-3D numerical models. Incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations on each computational cell were solved using the numerical methods available in FLOW-3D. The simulation results indicated that the locations of hydraulic jumps (HJs) were lower than that were reported in the previous one-dimensional study. Similarly, the distances of the HJs from the downstream toe of the glacis were reached at 2.97 m and 6 m at 129.10 m and 130.30 m tailwater levels, respectively, which deviated from the previous studies. In higher tailwater, the sequent depth ratio also deviated from the previous data. The maximum turbulent kinetic energies were observed in the developing regions of HJs, which were found to be decreased as the distance from the HJ was increased. This article focuses on the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) Type II stilling basin, which has chute blocks, an end dentated sill, and a flat floor. USBR provides general design criteria to contain the hydraulic jump within the stilling basin. The sequent depth ratio, energy dissipation ratio, and stilling basin dimensions of the hydraulic jump are changed when the bed slope of USBR II stilling basins is changed. This study aimed to investigate the effects of adverse slope on the performance of USBR II stilling basin in terms of sequent depth ratio and energy dissipation. Six discharges ranging from 8 to 33 lps were applied to the USBR II stilling basin with bed slopes (S) of −0.085, −0.055, −0.035, and 0. Results demonstrated that for Q = 13 and 8 lps, the basin performs better than other models with S = −0.085, increasing energy dissipation by about 10% compared to a typical basin due to the formation of a free hydraulic jump downstream dentated end sill. On the other hand, the floor downstream of the dentated end sill needs more protection against this free jump, and this case becomes economically expensive. In other cases, the downstream jump was submerged, resulting in a counterintuitive current and reverse roller based on the submerged ratio, reducing the effectiveness of the stilling basin. In addition, the modified design of the stilling basin resulted in a shorter effective length that included the hydraulic jump downstream spillway, thereby reducing internal friction. As a result, the standard USBR II with a flatbed is less expensive and more efficient than the adverse slope basin.

One of the most used hydraulic structures for energy dissipation of supercritical flow is the hydraulic jump stilling basin. From dimensional analysis, the sequent flow depth ratio of a hydraulic jump over the right-triangle basin is derived as a function of the inflow Froude number and relative length of the basin front. The proposed structure stabilized the hydraulic jump at the toe of the chute spillway and hydraulic jump characteristics were investigated for the Froude number ranging from 4.4 < F1 < 7. The results obtained from both numerical and experimental simulations yielded increased efficiency in the energy dissipation performance of this novel design. The modeling showed the formation of two large recirculation regions at the jump roller and jump bed at the beginning of the downstream channel, which resulted in intense energy dissipation in the right-triangle basin. The relative energy loss is approximately 37% higher for relative basin front lengths larger than three compared to the classic jump. Practitioners and academia on the usefulness of a right-triangle basin for hydraulic purposes and further experimental tests are needed to estimate the scalability and cost–benefit of this modified system for implementation. HIGHLIGHTS The right-triangle basin with the downstream horizontal channel, as a modified energy dissipation structure.; For this design, the frontal face of the basin is set perpendicular to the inflow direction and its end edge is at the same level as the downstream horizontal channel bed.; The results obtained from both numerical and experimental simulations efficiency in energy dissipation performance of this novel design.;

Water–air two-phase flow has been the theoretical basis of traditional building drainage systems. However, with the popularization of water saving devices, more research investigations need to be performed on the impact of solid waste on drainage systems. Through experiments under the solid waste scenario, the effects of drainage volume, diameter, and slope of the pipeline on the hydraulic performances of the horizontal main drain were investigated. The results showed that the drainage volume, diameter, and slope of the pipeline did not affect the location of the hydraulic jump on the horizontal main drain. The heights of the hydraulic jump were proportional to the discharge volumes and diameters of the pipeline, but inversely proportional to the slopes of the pipeline. The depth ratio was mainly responsible for the change of positive pressure value in the horizontal main drain. The depth ratios were proportional to the drainage volumes and inversely proportional to the diameters and slopes of the pipeline. The final deposition distances of solid wastes in the horizontal main drain were proportional to the discharge volumes and the pipeline slopes. The self-cleaning lengths of the clear water were 1.2∼1.6 times of the real final deposition distances of solid wastes. HIGHLIGHTS The change of depth ratio caused the variation of positive pressure in horizontal main drain.; The location of hydraulic jump was not affected by the drainage volume, the diameter or the slope.; The height of the hydraulic jump was affected by the drainage volume, the diameter and the slope.; The depth ratio was affected by the drainage volume, the diameter and the slope.; The final deposition distance of solid wastes was affected by the drainage volume, the diameter and the slope.;
