Moisture uptake of polymer materials used for electronic packaging and moisture ingress into automotive electronic sensor housings have been studied by exposure to constant and cyclic humidity and temperature conditions. The first-level housing is made of epoxy molding compound (EMC) and encapsulates the sensor silicon-chip. The second-level housing is made of polybutylene terephthalate and contains the EMC attached to a printed circuit board (PCB). The novel approach was to perform in situ measurements of the temperature and the relative humidity (RH) inside the EMC next to the silicon chip, and to measure the humidity transfer from outdoor to the second, and through the first-level housings up to the chip. The effect of the presence of PCB and the self-heating of components have been investigated. The results showed that the time constants for humidity to reach 63% of outdoor conditions are about 2 and 7 days at 60 degrees C for the second-and first-level housings, respectively. Exposure to cyclic conditions showed that the internal RH tends to reach a steady state, close to the mean value of the cyclic outdoor profile, while the presence of polymeric materials (as PCB) can act as a humidity buffer and absorb and desorb water when subjected to temperature fluctuations.

Explores new solar gardens in rural areas and photovoltaic roofs, the characteristics of facilities and the comparison of the growth with Europe. Also, a study compared between the two sectors, highlighting the similarities and the regions with major activity. Finally, is evaluated the use of the buildings for photovoltaic, evaluating the potential synergies of collaboration.

A plurality of optical sensors are mounted to a housing made of optically conductive material. The housing seals the optical sensors from a water-filled tube which extends through said housing. The optically conductive material provides optical coupling with the water-filled cable tube whereby a plurality of light beams are directed through the housing and the water-filled tube in a predetermined pattern, which provides certainty of the absence or presence of a cable within the water-filled cable tube for a minimum cable diameter regardless of the orientation of the cable within the water-filled tube.

A catcher, in combination with a firearm having an ejection port, for receiving and retaining expended magnetically attracted shell casings through the ejection port as the firearm is discharged. The catcher includes a hollow housing having a plurality of rigid walls, and retainers. One of the walls has an opening in communication with the ejection port when the catcher is mounted to the firearm for receiving the shell casings. This paper examines DDESB acceptance criteria for the design of structures housing small quantities of explosive materials (i.e., less than 10 lb TNT equivalent). From experience, following current DDESB design guidelines (e.g., UFC 3-340-02) can result in extremely fortified construction, in terms of wall and roof thickness and level of reinforcement, even when charge weights are small or significant venting is provided. This issue is particularly evident when small volume storage rooms are desired. Means of possibly reducing the rigidity of the current reinforced concrete acceptance criteria are explored by optimizing computational models with various construction layouts (e.g., different wall thicknesses and flexural/non-flexural reinforcement requirements) subject to shock and gas loading. Recommendations and limitations are provided for using small charges in containment applications., See also ADM002313. The U.S. Army has experienced significant corrosion problems with magnesium alloys that are used to fabricate aircraft components. The most severe of these are associated with large and expensive transmission and gearbox housings for rotorcraft, which have to be removed prematurely because of corrosion. Many of the parts cannot be reclaimed because there is not an existing technology that can restore them adequately for service. The U.S. Army Research Laboratory has developed a cold spray process to reclaim magnesium components that shows significant improvement over existing methods and is in the process of qualification for use on rotorcraft. The cold spray repair has been shown to have superior performance in the tests conducted to date, is inexpensive, can be incorporated into production, and has been modified for field repair, making it a feasible alternative over competing technologies. Cold spray trials were performed using aluminum powders at different deposition conditions with both helium and nitrogen carrier gas. Evaluations of the resultant cold spray aluminum coatings deposited on ZE-41A magnesium alloy substrates were conducted using microstructural analysis, hardness, bond strength, and corrosion testing., The original document contains color images.

The vast majority of all operational railguns in the world employ a metallic containment housing. Often composed of thousands of precision sheet metal laminates to prevent induced eddy currents, the launchers are labor intensive to build. The backbone railgun provides a monolithic metallic containment structure. Induced eddy currents are inhibited by the introduction of a large number of slits along the length of the launcher that achieve an effect analogous to traditional laminates. It is anticipated that the machining of slits from a monolithic launcher will lend itself to factory automation far more so than assembling a full length launcher from thousands of individual metal laminates. The principal advantages are 1) elimination of stack-up tolerances, 2) producibility, and 3) stiffness. Only glasses, ceramic and carbon fiber reinforced plastic can provide the necessary weight to strength ratio to make the external pressure housings for undersea vehicles positively buoyant at the abyssal design depth. This group of materials poses unique challenges to the designer and fabricator of pressure housings. This paper summarizes the findings of the R & D program aimed at developing the technology for the design, fabrication, and testing of ceramic housings culminating in the application of ceramic housings to the WHOI ROV/AUV diving system with 36,000 ft (11,000 m) capability (Figure 1)., See also ADM002006. A filter-testing fixture holds a single fuel filter and is adjustable to accommodate a range of filter sizes and shapes. The fixture has a base section that defines a water collection reservoir, and the base opens upward toward a housing. Water separated from fuel in the housing thus drains into the reservoir. A fuel inlet conduit passes through the reservoir, one end of the conduit being disposed above the base section. The first, or filter-supporting, adapter is removably attached to this end of the conduit, and both the first adapter and this end are disposed within, the housing. The housing removably and sealingly mates to the base, and a cap assembly likewise removably and sealingly mates to the housing. A second, repositionable, filter-housing adapter is connected to the inner surface of the cap.

During the production of a filter housing for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Hamill Manufacturing Company, Trafford, Pennsylvania, was required to drill a 5.5-inch-diameter, 21.5-inch-deep hole in a block of 1020 steel. The operation consumed excessive time and tooling. It took 63 minutes and four drills -- in spot, 3.0-inch, 5.0-inch, and 5.5-inch diameters -- to complete the hole. Chip control was an additional problem, frequently making it necessary to retract the drills in mid-cut to clear out the unwieldy steel chips. NAVSEA asked if the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) could provide a solution to reduce machining time and improve chip control. NCDMM suggested application of a 5.5-inch-diameter deephole drilling system that featured a coated carbide pilot drill flanked by two flutes tooled with a total of four indexable carbide cutting inserts. The inserts had titanium-nitride coating for wear resistance, and an advanced chip control geometry. Internal passages in the drill body delivered coolant directly to the cutting edge/workpiece interface., Prepared in cooperation with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Hamill Manufacturing Company.

A robotic vehicle is provided with an elliptical shaped housing, the housing having a circumferential track disposed about its midsection. The circumferential track is driven by a prime mover to rotate the housing and move it over a variety of different terrains. The vehicle is adapted to carry weapons systems for military application.

A trailer hitch apparatus for use with a lunette eye mounting includes a housing with a lunette eye on one end. A housing has a plurality of rectangular inserts, the inserts having a recess on one face adapted to hold and enclose a lunette eye and hold the lunette eye of the trailer firmly within the housing. A retention pin extends through the apertures in the housing the lunette eye of the trailer and the apertures in the rectangular inserts to hold the adapter and parts together. This patent application discloses an underwater weapon system having a rotating gun system mounted in a vehicle housing. The gun system includes a gun and ammunition sealed within a waterproof housing with the gun muzzle protruding from the housing. The gun system is rotatable relative to the first and second halves of the housing, while the housing can be maneuvered to rotate through a plane of rotation of the gun system as the housing moves through the water. Underwater gun systems are being developed for use in anti-mine and anti-torpedo applications. The basic systems include an underwater gun, underwater projectiles, a ship-mounted turret supporting the gun, a targeting system, and a combat system. The underwater gun shoots underwater projectiles that are specially designed for neutralization of undersea targets at ranges of 200 meters or more. The undersea targets are identified and localized with the targeting system, and the combat system provides the control commands to direct the ship-mounted turret to aim the gun at the target. Currently, underwater gun systems are mounted onboard a conventional ship by means of a retractable gun turret that deploys a rotating gun using a large hydraulic actuator. The gun is stored in a bay having a hatch on the bottom of the ship that can be opened to allow the turret and gun to be deployed there through. When deployed, the gun turret is not readily faired, thereby causing drag that results in substantial hydrodynamic loads on the deployed turret and host ship. Furthermore, for the gun system to respond rapidly to an unexpected threat, it must be continuously deployed, thereby subjecting the host ship to long-term hydrodynamic loads. This invention provides an underwater gun that can be continuously deployed without substantially affecting the ship's operation, and that can be maneuvered to engage an underwater target in any direction. The gun can be towed underwater by the ship or can be self-propelled. (3 figures) 7

An assembly of underwater bodies and a launcher therefor. The assembly is adapted for mounting on a submarine outside the pressure hull. The assembly includes a launcher having a housing for enclosing an underwater body, a body support structure within the housing for supporting the body, a pressure regulator system in communication with the housing for imposing a selected pressure on an interior of the housing, a hatch pivotally mounted on the housing, and an actuator for opening the hatch to permit the body to exit the hatch and for closing the hatch. The underwater body is a self-propelled body adapted to exit by gravity from the launcher. A release device is disposed on the launcher for releasing the body from the launcher to permit the exit of the body from the launcher by gravity. (4 figures)

Root cause analysis and development of recommended corrective actions for cracked flywheel housings and driveshaft universal joint failures in model M1078 2 1/2 ton Light Medium Tactical Vehicle 4X4 trucks are the primary focus of this report. The complex dynamic system required specialized instrumentation and mathematical modeling to help understand the problem and prescribe corrective actions. This report details the engineering investigation conducted by Michigan Scientific Corporation (MSC) and independently by Dr. John F. Martin of Michigan State University during the months of April 1998 through December 1998.
