This study focuses on housing inequalities across diverse social groups with respect to two housing indicators: subjective housing discrimination; and objective housing deprivation. By scrutinizing the correspondence in inequalities between the two indicators, we enhance the measurement of housing inequality and at the same time we shed light on the relationship between subjective and objective dimensions of housing— a relationship that has received little empirical examination so far. Existing research suggests that housing discrimination can contribute to housing deprivation through two channels: inadequate information and limited economic resources. Our focus is the post-2008 housing market crash era in Ireland. We use two separate large-scale individual-level surveys, the QNHS (2004, 2010, 2014) for analysing housing discrimination and SILC (2014, 2015) for analysing housing deprivation. Our findings reveal a robust convergence between perceptions of housing discrimination and objective housing deprivation across various social groups. Traditionally vulnerable groups—such as young individuals, those with disabilities, non-natives (excluding EU citizenship holders), single parents, and individuals without children—experience both discrimination and deprivation. Notably, certain groups exhibit persistent disparities in discrimination and disadvantage, even after considering factors like human capital, regional and tenure differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Africa is currently the fastest urbanizing continent in the world. The contemporary urban development in Africa is faced with multi-scale and diverse challenges one of which is housing deprivation. A cross-sectional survey research design involving a stratified sampling technique was utilized in this study. The indicators of housing deprivation were measured based on the headcount approach, the percentage of persons in the population living in dwellings without basic requirements such as the structural aspect of housing, the characteristics of roofs, walls, floor, access to quality water, electricity, sanitation, and habitability. An equal weight of 1 was assigned to each dimension in a nested fashion. The result reveals that (204) 52.7% of the respondents are males, while (183) 47.3% are females. Most of the respondents (292)75.5% are aware of housing deprivation, while (281) 72.6% of respondents stated that there is a relationship between urbanization and housing deprivation in the city of Yenagoa. The result of the Pearson Product Moment Correlation reveals a coefficient of (r = 0.660), which means a strong positive relationship between urbanization and housing deprivation at a 0.01 significance level. This result implies that urbanization because of pull factors is one of the principal determinants of housing deprivation in Yenagoa. Lack of decent housing facilities contributed to the development of squatter settlements and with the ever-increasing rate of urbanization, it becomes imperative for the government to plan for the development of the housing sector and provide affordable low-cost housing estate, especially within Yenagoa city to redress the issue of poor housing. The study aims to examine the prevalence of housing deprivation and its determinants in Poland. It uses recent Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) panel data from 2017-2020. To identify the socioeconomic factors behind housing deprivation among Polish households, we apply the random-effects probit model approach. We find evidence that housing deprivation is negatively related to household income and level of education. On the contrary, the presence of unemployed people in the household increases the risk of housing deprivation. In addition, our results revealed that essential factors affecting the examined phenomenon are tenure status, dwelling type, place of residence of households – its degree of urbanisation and region. Our random effects probit modelling approach finds that unobserved household characteristics play an important role in explaining housing deprivation. This study investigates housing conditions of single mothers in the context of housing policies. We study single mothers' probability to experience housing deprivation, overcrowded housing, overburdening costs of housing, and neighbourhood problems across European countries. We consider the structural consequences of home ownership rates, and policies related to regulation of rental markets, housing benefits and housing prices. We apply a multi-level framework to EU-SILC data on 21,937 single mothers, from 195 country-years and covering 21 European countries from 2008 to 2017. First, we find a trade-off in the provision of free housing or housing at reduced rents, that helps to reduce housing cost overburden for single mothers, but is also associated with higher rates of housing deprivation, overcrowding and neighbourhood problems. Next, in contexts with stricter rental market regulation, single mothers' housing deprivation is lower. Higher housing benefits reduce the risk of housing deprivation as well as overcrowding, but in contexts where home ownership is common, single mothers tend to experience more overcrowding. Single mothers are more likely to report neighbourhood problems in societies where housing prices are high. Based on interviews and ethnography, this article analyzes how racialized gender policing in public space and service organizations deprives transgender women of survival resources. Although transgender women are disproportionately the targets of enforcement, most studies of the criminalization of homelessness, drug use, sex work and migration exclude their experiences. Studies that do include transgender women often focus narrowly on anti-prostitution laws and enforcement, overlooking other laws and policies that contribute to criminalization and poverty. This article analyzes the confluence between policing of transgender women's identities and survival strategies in public space and in agencies meant to serve poor people (including shelters, drug treatment facilities and transitional living programs). Laws regulating access to public space combine with rules regulating gender in service organizations to both criminalize and create transgender poverty. More broadly, the carceral production of transgender poverty demonstrates that criminalization is not only a consequence but also a cause of both poverty and inequality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"The waste culture" is observable in land-government practices as in multiple other areas and dimensions of contemporaneity. Specifically, the research looks at housing policies, noting that in many cases the most immediate response to housing deprivation seems to be new construction. This contrasts with reuse policies, considering that urban contexts are characterized by the presence of interrupted construction sites, abandoned, and/or underutilized heritages as well as phenomena of shrinkage and thus settlement abandonment. At the same time, housing hardships are taking on new forms, difficulties are being exacerbated, and the numbers of struggling households are increasing as a result of the poly-crisis and the subsequent tightening of socio-economic conditions. In this context, the paper promotes multi-scalar reuse perspectives of the existing public and private heritage in response to the housing issue starting from the qualitative observation of the polycentric, marginal and shrinking spatial structure of South Salento in Apulia. Concerns about the quality of housing feature prominently in academic and policy discussion on housing, yet there is little agreement about how housing deprivation should be measured or monitored. In empirical studies, measures of housing deprivation are typically examined for one of two purposes—either to compare incidences of housing quality problems for different groups, which typically leads to an examination of performance of different measures of housing deprivation, or as dependent variables to examine competing theories about what explains cross-national variation in such problems, which typically ignores these measurement considerations. Our paper seeks to analyse measurement and theory jointly, focussing in particular on the EU's severe housing deprivation measure, and its subcomponents—overcrowding and housing conditions problems. In descriptive analysis, we show that the two components of the severe housing deprivation measure are weakly related and pattern differently across nations and that the aggregation rule of the main measure has a substantial influence on observed incidences of this problem. We subsequently construct multi-level regression-based models and demonstrate that the two components have quite different determinants. Our paper has implications for the measurement of severe housing deprivation in Europe, for theories that seek to account for differences in housing outcomes, and for policy that seeks to tackle housing deprivation problems. One of the re-launching policies for public owned housing is the "Programma di recupero e razionalizzazione degli immobili e degli alloggi di edilizia residenziale pubblica" (DL. 47/2014) The objective of this analysis is to provide a first assessment of this program, correlating the interventions financed by the public owned housing recovery program with the data on rental housing hardship (Bank of Italy). Background: Homelessness is an important though exceedingly difficult phenomenon to measure and understand. The most common sources of data measure homelessness only on a given night or set of consecutive nights, contact with homelessness service providers, or past homeless episodes. We therefore lack an understanding of the wider impact and nature of homelessness in society. Objective: I set out to estimate the number of people who experience homelessness in a one year period by duration and type of homelessness. Methods: A microsimulation model is used to recreate homeless episodes and impute those missed in common data sources. Model parameters are estimated using a combination of retrospective and longitudinal survey data from Australia. Administrative data from homelessness service providers are used to validate the estimates. Results: According to the results, 3.4 times as many people experienced homelessness in Australia in the 2013-2014 financial year than would have been counted on an average night. Almost one-third (32Š) of episodes last for less than one month and the large majority involve 'couch surfing' or 'doubling up' with relatives or friends. Conclusions: Homelessness and housing deprivation is more prevalent though more diverse and episodic than typically measured, affecting a large cross-section of the population and likely embedded within the dynamics of poverty and deprivation. Contribution: This research provides new estimates of the extent and duration of homelessness and housing deprivation that addresses existing data limitations and with implications for understanding the nature and impact of homelessness.

On the basis of theoretical analysis of sociological, cultural, psychological, medical, demographic and psycho physiological scientific sources, the author defines the methodological basis of research and quantification of mystical fear as a factor of housing prejudices, preferences and attitudes of the population, as a component of housing deprivation, which occurs as a result of demonization of the house and the formation of magical stigma in mass culture. Modern Russian sociology pays little attention to “mystical”, “supernatural” component of relationships between Man and Space, but the theme is legitimized by W.L. Warner, by E. Goffman's concept of "involvement". This concept removes the question of the scope of the supernatural faith in a secular society as supposedly mandatory for susceptibility to magical stigma. This is confirmed by some empirical sociological and anthropological studies of housing prejudices in UK, Canada and Russia (P. Cowdell, D. Kelso, I.V. Utekhin). Having identified the key components of the process of demonization of home space by means of mass media, we find the probable points of its intersection with the processes of stratification in the housing sector. Suburbanisation and “privatization” as a part of suburbanism as a way of life, living in historic buildings as well as in communal apartments are the types of living conditions that create the frame most suitable for the "context-induced" experience of external evil invading personal space, especially against the background of high viewer involvement in horror films watching. The article is relevant in the light of strengthening "antidomestic" values, growth of anxiety in society, an attempt to identify conventional, robust features of the "scary house" representations in horror movies, the popularity of which is of interest not only as an indicator of the state of mass psychology, but also as a direct mapping of the types of deprivation of housing situations and deprived persons, and also as a factor of actual housing units - of the prejudices and preferences of Russians. To identify the types of housing deprivation and attributes of terrible spaces, we used as material the annotations of horror films in the catalogue on the website https://my-hit.org/. We used two samples. The first one (n1=900) was strictly horror sample with a house as an important element of the character system in the plot. The second one (n2=572) was of all genres films, the title of which present any nomination of the house. Horror movie mostly stable models such housing frames as homelessness, institutional housing, a cultural heritage site as a residential, and a mansion, a manor, a castle. Among the forms of housing and the forms of territorial behavior the most dangerous are: job with residence (at the place of work), patrilocal marriage regardless of the quality of housing conditions, studies in boarding school, squatter settlement, accommodation in non-residential premises outside the city, rent or purchase too cheap compared to the market housing. The main attributes of a terrible home are old age, large size, spatial and social isolation, group or individual, and the abundance of "closed-like" architectural forms and details, especially additional barriers, special means of tracking and security. The focus of the article is on access to housing and the conceptual basis for its analysis and understanding in contemporary Slovenian society. First the housing outcomes of the process of “transition” are highlighted, still causing unfavourable conditions in the system of housing provision. This is followed by an overview of the discussion of housing deprivation, vulnerability and homelessness in the context of contemporary EU policy making. Finally the issue of housing deprivation is discussed in relation to the concept of “welfare production”, where the three sources of welfare are inter-related – the welfare state, the market and the family. The focus is on the family and its role within popular housing strategies of the Slovenian population.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the link between housing tenure types and housing deprivation in 26 European countries. Empirical analyses are based on European Union Survey on Income and Living Conditions 2007, enabling comparisons of deprivation across a large set of countries. A multilevel framework is employed. It is hypothesized that the organization of the rental sector inherently produces different housing market dynamics, which is likely to affect housing deprivation rates. An integrated rental sector covering broader parts of the population is expected to reduce the risk of housing deprivation. Housing deprivation is measured in terms of experiencing overcrowding and while also suffering any of the following accommodation problems: a leaking roof; no bath/shower; no indoor toilet; or a dwelling considered too dark. The findings indicate a negative association between the size of the rental sector and the prevalence of housing deprivation. The organization of the rental sector appears crucial and only an integrated rental sector encompassing broader parts of the population significantly reduces the prevalence of housing deprivation and its components. • We use a two-step procedure to assess the effect of urban size on housing deprivation. • We create a measure of housing deprivation based on individual characteristics. • We address urban size by means of high-resolution satellite imagery of population density. • In general, urban size is negatively related to housing deprivation levels in South Asia, but heterogeneity is observed across countries. • In India, the largest country, the association between urban size and housing deprivation is positive but increasing at a decreasing rate. Housing is a basic human need; however, in recent decades slums have become the face of urbanization in developing economies. Urbanization drives economic growth, playing an important role in providing adequate housing and reducing poverty. In this paper, we investigate the association between housing deprivation and the urban size at a regional level for South Asian countries in the year 2015. We use two main sources of data. The first is the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), which provide microdata that allows us to build housing deprivation indexes based on the material characteristics of households and housing assets. The second source is satellite imagery, used to define urban cores and measure the urban size of each region. Then, we use a two-step procedure to identify the relationship between the urban size and housing deprivation. Our results indicate that age and higher levels of education (of the head of household) are negatively associated with our housing deprivation indexes in South Asian households. Furthermore, a greater number of children in South Asian households is related to higher levels of housing deprivation. In the second step, we show that there is a significant negative association between material housing deprivation and the urban size at a regional level for our full sample and for the majority of countries taken individually. This article is built on the final Romanian long report about the contextual inquiry "Faces and Causes of the Roma Marginalization in Local Settings" (2013)12 with the aim to illustrate with further cases the phenomenon of the spatialization of Roma exclusion, the very topic of the SPAREX research which this issue of Studia UBB Sociologia is dedicated to. The final report structured the vast empirical material collected in 25 localities in six chapters, broadly discussing local administrative, developmental and institutional contexts, issues of school education, employment and Roma participation and political representation, and presenting an overview on the formation and current situation of deprived "Roma segments". The present article is focused on the latter issue, yet describing their local economic and housing context, and revealing how trans-local phenomena such as the lack of labour opportunities in the Romanian economy and the deficiencies of development policies shape/restrain the prospects of Roma communities to make their living on the localized stages of complex power relations. The paper makes a general description of poverty areas inhabited by Roma communities in Călăraşi, Romania and tries to put them into a general context of urban geography. In particular it aims to illustrate the urban setting, the housing conditions of the dwellers, the dynamics and the formation of three ethnic and poverty enclaves that display to a various degree the characters of an urban ghetto (Oborul Nou, Doi Moldoveni and Livadă) using mainly first-hand accounts of the inhabitants, analyzing the spatial policies of the authorities and the ways in which people deal with territory and housing issues. The analysis highlights the specificities of spatialization of Roma communities and racialization of poverty in small size Romanian cities, where segregation policies are rarely explicit, physical distances are less relevant, but the spatial exclusion process is no less visible and defined rather by substandard infrastructure, poor access and unfriendly limits [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Social factors have been proved to be main determinants of individuals' health. Recent studies have also analyzed the contribution of some of those factors, such as education and job status, to socioeconomic inequalities in health. The aim of this paper is to provide new evidence about the factors driving socioeconomic inequalities in health for the Spanish population by including housing deprivation and social interactions as health determinants. Methods: Cross-sectional study based on the Spanish sample of European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) for 2006. The concentration index measuring income-related inequality in health is decomposed into the contribution of each determinant. Several models are estimated to test the influence of different regressors for three proxies of ill-health. Results: Health inequality favouring the better-off is observed in the distribution of self-assessed health, presence of chronic diseases and presence of limiting conditions. Inequality is mainly explained, besides age, by social factors such as labour status and financial deprivation. Housing deprivation contributes to pro-rich inequality in a percentage ranging from 7.17% to 13.85%, and social interactions from 6.16% to 10.19%. The contribution of some groups of determinants significantly differs depending on the ill-health variable used. Conclusions: Health inequalities can be mostly reduced or shaped by policy, as they are mainly explained by social determinants such as labour status, education and other socioeconomic conditions. Living in inadequate housing conditions not only supposes a failure of a basic functioning. It also has effects on other essential aspects of well-being such as health. This study questions to what extent living in poor housing conditions can determine individuals' health status once the possible influence of other factors is controlled for. By estimating a logistic model with individual effects and a housing deprivation index based on a latent variable model, we reach a number of relevant conclusions concerning the relationship between these two different dimensions of multidimensional well-being. We find a negative effect of housing deprivation on the individuals' health, both when housing conditions are introduced in a disaggregated manner in the model and when they are combined in a latent variable. Housing deprivation is a key determinant of the capacity to prevent infection and to recover from a disease because poor housing prevents adequate sheltering during a quarantine. We analyze the degree of housing deprivation faced by households in European countries when COVID-19 lockdown measures were enacted. To do so, we propose a synthetic measure that includes more dimensions than the official Eurostat indicator of severe housing deprivation. We use a fuzzy set approach to measure housing deprivation so that, unlike traditional deprivation approaches, based on a dichotomous variable, we can identify different degrees of housing deprivation for each household in the population. We find similar orderings of housing deprivation dimensions by country with the highest degree of deprivation in the living space dimension and the lowest one in the standard housing or technology deprivation dimension. Nonetheless, housing deprivation levels differ across countries, with Eastern European households being significantly more housing deprived than the rest when the lockdown began. Abstract: This paper aims to present an assessment of the dynamics of housing deprivation through latent variable models taking Spain as reference. The first five waves of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) are used to analyze the nature and extent of the persistence of housing deprivation and the determinants of the flows into and out of this state. Discrete time duration models are estimated to identify which households have a higher risk of suffering housing deprivation on a persistent basis. Our results show that almost half the households have gone through some kind of housing deprivation during the period under study while in cross-sectional studies only a 20% of population appears to have done so. The results suggest not only that there are groups running a greater housing deprivation risk but also that some face a greater probability of being in this state on a persistent basis.
