The diploma thesis is focused on the use of modern technologies, specifically infrared thermography in dairy farming. The work primarily focuses on the detection of hoof diseases of dairy cows, their early diagnosis and the initiation of adequate treatment. The methodology evaluates the potential and usefulness of infrared thermography as a noninvasive tool for rapid examination of the most common diseases of dairy cows, especially in the hoof area. Also the work primarily focuses on digital dermatitis, which is the most extensive in this area. The weakness of cattle, especially dairy cows, is a worldwide problem and lameness is one of the most common causes of dairy cows being weaned. Hoof problems and diseases have a negative impact on animal health and welfare, which can affect farms. Prevention and early diagnosis of lameness should prevent the development of the disease and the consequent high costs of treatment. The literature section describes the most common causes of infectious and noninfectious diseases, prevention and diagnosis by infrared thermography (thermal imaging). Susceptibility to the disease is primarily affected by the quality of the horn. The quality of the horn is affected by internal and external conditions, such as hygiene, nutrition, hormonal changes during calving and lactation, the age of the animal or genetic predisposition. The next part of this review summarizes the basic principles and possibilities of using infrared thermography in the early detection of disease in dairy cows.

El escrito expone los resultados del trabajo de investigación, cuyo objetivo fue el de identificar la cultura de los pueblos indígenas y la interculturalidad en los procesos de formación profesional en Educación Física en Colombia. A nivel metodológico, el ejercicio caminó en la espiral, buscando la Jijunan (comprensión) y la Kajijunan (interpretación) en un diálogo horizontal con la técnica del análisis de contenido para inferir y desocultar lo latente, lo no aparente en los documentos institucionales y mallas curriculares. Como resultados se destacan la existencia de 46 programas del nivel de pregrado y 15 de posgrados entre especializaciones y maestrías. Respecto a las unidades de relevancia de la investigación, solo se halló un descriptor referido a la interculturalidad y ninguno a la cultura de los pueblos indígenas. De esto se puede colegir, a modo de conclusión, la permanencia del proyecto invisibilizador de la otredad, subalternizador de la cultura de los pueblos indígenas y, por tanto, negador de la diversidad social en los procesos de formación profesional. The article presents the results of the research work that aimed to identify the culture of indigenous peoples and interculturality in the processes of professional training in Physical Education in Colombia. At the methodological level, the exercise walked in the spiral, looking for the Jijunan (comprehension) and the Kajijunan (interpretation) in a horizontal dialogue with the technique of content analysis to infer and uncover the latent, what is not apparent in the institutional documents and curricular meshes. As results are highlighted: the existence of 46 programs at the undergraduate level and 15 postgraduate programs between specializations and master’s degrees. Regarding the units of relevance of the research, only one descriptor was found referring to interculturality and none to the culture of the indigenous peoples. From this we can infer, as a conclusion, the permanence of the invisibility project of otherness, subalternizer of the culture of the indigenous peoples, and therefore, denial of social diversity in the processes of professional training.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hoof pathologies and indicators of dairy production in dairy farms in the department of Caaguazú, Paraguay. Fifty cows reared in compost bed barns were evaluated, with hoof pathologies diagnosed during the descending phase of lactation. The type of hoof pathology, location, evolution, milk production, fat content, protein content and somatic cell count (SCC) were evaluated between September 2019 and January 2020. The Friedman test was used to detect statistical differences between groups according to the lactation days: Category 1, 92-137; Category 2, 138-182; and Category 3, 183-227 days of lactation. The sole and the interdigital area registered a higher frequency of pathologies; while, the white line, wall and heel the least casuistry. The frequency in the pelvic limb was different in Category 3 with the lowest count (p˂0.05), while there were no differences between the other two categories. The frequency of animals with low, medium and high levels in the productive variables did not differ between the groups. The multiple correspondence analysis detected an association between category 3, sole hemorrhage, mild evolution, and high fat and protein levels. Those in category 2 were linked to interdigital phlegmon, severe evolution and low and medium levels of protein and fat, respectively. The pathology with the least impact on production, due to the lower SCC and the highest quantity of milk produced, was white line disease. In contrast, the sole ulcer of severe evolution was associated with the highest SCC and the lowest amount of milk produced., El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la asociación entre patologías podales y los indicadores de producción láctea en tambos del departamento de Caaguazú, Paraguay. Se evaluaron 50 vacas criadas en establos de cama de compost, con patologías podales diagnosticadas durante la fase descendente de lactancia. Se evaluó el tipo de patología podal, localización, evolución, producción láctea, tenor graso, tenor proteico y recuento de células somáticas (RCS) entre setiembre de 2019 y enero de 2020. Se utilizó la prueba de Friedman para detectar diferencias estadísticas entre los grupos conformados según los días de lactancia en Categoría 1, 92-137; Categoría 2, 138-182; y Categoría 3, 183-227 días de lactancia. La suela y la zona interdigital registraron mayor frecuencia de patologías; mientras que, la línea blanca, tapa y talón la menor casuística. La frecuencia en el miembro pelviano fue diferente en la Categoría 3 con el recuento más bajo (p˂0.05), mientras no hubo diferencias entre las otras dos categorías. La frecuencia de animales con niveles bajo, medio y alto en las variables productivas no difirieron entre los grupos. El análisis de correspondencia múltiple detectó asociación entre la categoría 3, hemorragia de suela, evolución leve, y tenores graso y proteico altos. Las de categoría dos se vincularon a flemón interdigital, evolución severa y niveles bajo y medio de proteína y grasa, respectivamente. La patología con menor impacto sobre la producción, por el menor RCS y mayor cantidad de leche producida fue la enfermedad de la línea blanca. Contrariamente, la úlcera de suela de evolución grave se asoció al mayor RCS y menor cantidad de leche producida.

In the current intensive production system, ruminants are often fed high-grain (HG) diets. However, this feeding pattern often causes rumen metabolic disorders and may further trigger laminitis, the exact mechanism is not clear. This study investigated the effect of HG diet feeding on fermentative and microbial changes in the rumen and on the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the lamellar tissue. In all, 12 male goats were fed a hay diet (0% grain; n=6) or an HG diet (56.5% grain; n=6). Paw and hoof prints are considered to be the most widespread of them and, therefore, frequently occurring as objects of examination. However, a low rate of examinations of this type as well as an insufficiently detailed description of peculiarities of methods of their conduct in forensic literature can lead to improper evaluation of specific features and wrong conclusions. Within the framework of the conducted research the author generalizes data about the anatomical structure of animal limbs prints of which can be an object of expert practice. There is also a specified classification of print forming parts’ features according to which all the anatomical signs of animal paws and hooves are divided into group and individualizing ones. Introduction: associating the physical characteristics of the animals within a production system is a tool to group animals that can adapt to climate, topography, and handling conditions, without an impact on their productivity. Objective: our objective was to evaluate the relationship between 17 physical variables, from 1 260 animals of the Holstein and Jersey breeds, with their productivity in milk production systems located on the foothills of the Poás Volcano in Alajuela, Costa Rica, during the years 2013 and 2014. Methods: the nutritional and sanitary conditions of the studied farms were very similar. To this end we reconciled information of the daily production per cow, the lactation production adjusted to 305 days, the interval between calves, open days, postpartum days to the first service, and services for conception. Results: the height, physical capability, characteristics of the milk, strength, and rump angle are the parts of the cow that have the most influence on their reproductive performance. The conformation of the udder has no influence on the reproduction parameters, there are no statistical differences between the different scores for the characteristics of the udder and the reproductive parameters, but some trends of both breeds can be mentioned. The udder is more related to milk production than the legs and the hooves. Conclusions: the results of this research are exploratory, but they highlight variables that help define a voluntary selection program of Holstein or Jersey animals during the lactation period, which will help obtain animals that can adapt to the handling, environmental, nutritional, and sanitary characteristics of each system. This paper deals with the possibility of using an acoustic emission method for testing tensile strength of hooves. By using the acoustic emission (AE) method, we are able to locate degraded areas in hooves and then estimate the extent of degradation. In the experimental part, a sensor was used to record the emission signals, the measured data were processed and analysed, and the response of hooves to the applied mechanical load over time was monitored. Hooves preserve the isotopic information laid down during their growth and may be used for reconstruction of animal feeding history. To assign certain positions along hooves to corresponding times, growth rates are required. Hoof growth rates are known for domestic animals; however, they cannot be obtained easily in wild animals. We estimated the hoof growth rate of the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) by using the immediate drop in δ13C along the hoof as a tag that is assigned to the date of maize (Zea mays L.) harvest. Keratin samples were taken each mm along 17 hooves and analyzed for their δ13C. A linear regression between (1) time differences of expected maize harvest to animal death and (2) distances between the points of the δ13C drop to the periople yielded the growth rate. Mean hoof growth rate was 0.122 mm/day (95% CI 0.014 mm/day) and 0.365%/day (±0.026%/day) of the hoof length and within the range of domestic animals. The method may be applied to determine growth rates of other incrementally growing tissues. Our estimated growth rate fosters dating isotopic information in hooves, facilitating research on feed resources and space use of roe deer.

Morphometrische Messungen auf Röntgenbildern von Pferdehufen werden durchgeführt, um die Hufkonformation zu beschreiben. Abweichungen von der normalen Hufkonformation sind prädisponierende Faktoren für gewisse Krankheitsbilder und beweisend für andere, wie z.B. die Hufrehe. Wiederholbare und akkurate Konformationmessungen erfordern eine gründliche Vorbereitung der Hufe und eine standardisierte Röntgentechnik. Zur Interpretation der Messparameter müssen die Referenzwerte einer gesunden Population und die rassenspezifischen Unterschiede bekannt sein. Anhand einer umfassenden Literaturrecherche wurden die verschieden röntgenologischen Messparameter am Huf im Hinblick auf Messgenauigkeit und klinische Relevanz untersucht. Morphometrische Parameter mit einer besonders kleinen Variabilität und somit guter Aussagekraft sind der Hufwinkel, der Hufbeinwinkel, die Hufbalance, die Zehenlänge und die Wanddicke. Eine besonders große Variabilität und somit geringe Aussagekraft haben der Palmar- / Plantarwinkel, die Trachtenlänge, der Rotationswinkel und die Rehestrecke. Unter strikter Anwendung einer standardisierten Röntgentechnik wurden die Referenzwerte für morphometrische Messungen am Huf von Ponies ermittelt. Dazu wurden die Hufe der Vordergliedmaßen (im lateromedialen und dorsopalmaren Strahlengang) und Hintergliedmaßen (im lateromedialen Strahlengang) von 81 Ponies mit einer Widerristhöhe zwischen 81,5 cm und 148 cm standardisiert geröntgt. Lineare Messungen an den Ponyhufen haben überwiegend eine starke Korrelation zur Widerristhöhe, im Gegenteil zu Winkelmessungen, welche mit Messungen bei Warmblütern und Vollblütern vergleichbar waren. Mit Hilfe des linearen Regressionsmodells wurden linearen Messungen für ein Standardpony von 120 cm Widerristhöhe definiert. Die Zu- bzw. Abnahme der linearen Masse kann anhand der individuellen Widerristhöhe berechnet werden. Die Angaben aus der Literaturrecherche und aus der Röntgenstudie können als Referenzwerte bei der Beurteilung von Hufröntgenbildern von Pferden und Ponies verwendet werden., Morphometric measurements of the horse's hoof are performed to describe hoof conformation. Deviations from the normal hoof conformation are predisposing factors for certain disease patterns and proving to others, e.g. laminitis. Repeatable and accurate measurements of the hoof conformation require a thorough hoof preparation and a standardised radiographic protocol. An interpretation of the measurements and findings is only possible if normal baseline values with breed-specific differences are available. On the basis of a comprehensive literature research, the various radiographic parameters of the hoof were examined with regard to measurement accuracy and clinical relevance. Morphometric parameters with a particularly small variability and therefore high significance include the hoof angle, the distal phalanx angle, the hoof balance, the toe length and the hoof wall thickness. The palmar / plantar angle, the heel length, the angle of rotation and the founder distance have a particularly high range of normal values and therefore a lower significance. The reference values for morphometric measurements on the pony hooves were determined under strict application of a standardised radiographic protocol. Radiographic examination of the hooves of the front feet (lateromedial and dorsopalmar view) and hind feet (lateromedial view) of 81 ponies with a withers height between 81.5 cm and 148 cm was performed. A strong correlation between linear measurements and height at the withers was shown. In contrast, angular measurements were comparable to those found in Warmbloods and Thoroughbreds. Using a linear regression model, linear measurements were defined for a standard pony of 120 cm withers' height. The increase or decrease of the linear measurements can be calculated on the basis of the individual withers' height. The data obtained during the literature research and the radiographic study provides useful reference values for the evaluation of hoof radiographs of horses and ponies.

Schadenersatzforderungen gegen Tierärzte aufgrund von vermeintlichen Befunderhebungs-, Diagnose- oder Behandlungsfehlern verzeichnen seit den 70er Jahren einen ununterbrochenen Anstieg. Die Hufrehe mit ihrem vielgestaltigen Krankheitsbild, den immer noch offenen Fragen zur Ätiopathogenese und einer fehlenden einheitlichen Therapieempfehlung besitzt bei ausbleibendem Behandlungserfolg besonderes Potenzial für Rechtsstreitigkeiten. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die gutachterliche Beurteilung von vermeintlichen Befunderhebungs- , Diagnose- und Behandlungsfehler-Vorwürfen gegen den Tierarzt bei der Hufrehe des Pferdes darzustellen, um mögliche Fehlerquellen aufzuzeigen und Hinweise zu deren Vermeidung zu geben. Dazu wurden Gutachten aus den privaten Archiven von 4 sachverständigen Gutachtern mit langjähriger Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der Pferdeorthopädie deskriptiv statistisch ausgewertet, aus denen 58 Fehlervorwürfe identifiziert werden konnten. Im Bereich der Hufrehediagnostik wurden von 22 dem Tierarzt vorgeworfenen Fehlern, etwas weniger als die Hälfte (40,9%) durch die Gutachter bestätigt. Davon stellten die Fehlinterpretation von klinischen (33,3%) und röntgenologischen (33,3%) Befunden die häufigste Fehlerquelle dar, gefolgt von der unterlassenen klinische Untersuchung (22,2%) und einer unterlassene röntgenologische Untersuchung (11,1%). Abseits der Diagnostik richtete sich die Vorwürfe der Pferdebesitzer in 20 Fällen gegen die vom Tierarzt durchgeführte Hufrehe-Therapie und 16 Fällen gegen eine tierärztliche Behandlung, in deren Folge eine Hufrehe aufgetreten war. Die Gutachter bestätigten die Behandlungsfehler-Vorwürfe bei der Hufrehe-Therapie in mehr als der Hälfte der Fälle (55,0%) und begründeten diese mit vorangegangenen Diagnosefehlern (54,5%) und einer unzureichenden orthopädischen Therapie (45,5%). Hinsichtlich des Vorwurfs „iatrogene Hufrehe“ kam der Cortison induzierten Rehe die größte Bedeutung (68,8%) zu. Insgesamt bestätigten die Gutachter den Vorwurf „iatrogene Hufrehe“ zu knapp einem Drittel (31,3%). Zur Vermeidung von Diagnose- und Befunderhebungsfehlern bei der Hufrehe sind eine systematische klinische Untersuchung sowie eine standardisierte, röntgenologische Untersuchung essentiell. Die differentialdiagnostische Abgrenzung der Hufrehe zu ähnlichen Krankheitsbildern, wie dem der Pododermatitis, kann im Anfangsstadium dennoch schwierig sein. Ein hohes aber tendenziell vermeidbares Risiko für den Tierarzt bergen Dokumentationsversäumnisse, die im Ernstfall als Befunderhebungsfehler gewertet werden können, welche der Tierarzt rechtlich zu vertreten hat. Aus der Beurteilung der Gutachter ergibt sich, dass als wesentliche Maßnahme bei der Behandlung der Hufrehe eine frühzeitige orthopädische Therapie, mit dem Ziel, die erkrankten Bereiche zu entlasten, anzusehen ist. Das verspätete Durchführen bzw. Unterlassen von orthopädischen Maßnahmen besitzt nach Meinung der Gutachter forensische Relevanz. Given its diverse clinical picture, the as yet unanswered questions on aetiopathogenesis and the lack of a uniform therapy recommendation, equine laminitis offers major potential for legal disputes when treatment is not successful. The aim of this study was to present the expert assessment of complaints against veterinarians in conjunction with alleged errors in the assessment of findings, diagnosis and treatment of equine laminitis in order to identify possible sources of errors and offer advice on how to avoid them. To this end, reports from the private archives of four experts with longstanding experience in the field of equine orthopaedics were evaluated from the descriptive-statistical angle. 58 error complaints were identified. In the field of equine laminitis diagnosis just under half (40.9%) of the 22 alleged errors by veterinarians were confirmed by the experts. Of them the erroneous interpretation of clinical (33.3%) and x-ray (33.3%) findings were the most frequent source of error, followed by failure to undertake a clinical examination (22.2%) and failure to undertake an x-ray examination (11.1%). Aside from diagnosis the horse owners’ complaints were directed in 20 cases against the equine laminitis treatment carried out by the veterinarian and in 16 cases against the veterinary treatment in the aftermath of which equine laminitis occurred. The experts confirmed the accusation of treatment error for equine laminitis in more than half of the cases (55%). They cited prior diagnostic errors (54.5%) and inadequate orthopaedic treatment (45.5%) as the reasons. With regard to the complaint “iatrogenic laminitis”, the greatest importance was attributed to cortisone-induced laminitis (68.8%). In total the experts confirmed the complaint “iatrogenic laminitis” in almost one third of the cases (31.3%). To avoid errors in diagnosis and the assessment of findings in conjunction with equine laminitis, systematic clinical examination and a standardised x-ray examination are essential. The differential diagnostic differentiation between equine laminitis and similar clinical pictures like pododermatitis may still be difficult in the early stages. Documentation shortcomings constitute a high but possibly avoidable risk. In the event of a complaint, they can be deemed to be errors in the assessment of findings for which the veterinarian is legally responsible. From the experts’ assessment it is clear that timely orthopaedic treatment to relieve the strain on the diseased areas is seen as the main action to be taken to treat equine laminitis. The delayed conduct of or the failure to conduct orthopaedic measures is of forensic relevance in the experts’ opinion. Cortisone-induced laminitis constitutes a special forensic risk for the veterinarian. He can protect himself against this risk by critically examining the indication in the case of glucocorticoid treatments and by reading the manufacturer’s instructions very carefully.

Laminitis is one of the most important complex diseases of horses, often leading to irreversible hoof changes, which fundamentally restricts work and sports use of horses, fitness, performance, and reduces their value. Prevention and timely treatment is a prerequisite for further full use of the horse. The bachelor thesis deals with the anatomy and physiology of the hoof, the etiology of the disease of the hoof joint, and the formation, course and treatment of the hoof approval with the aim of getting acquainted with the possibility of alternative treatment. Part of the work is also an evaluation of the incidence of hoof approval, treatment and prevention methods. A questionnaire survey was carried out in 18 holdings with a total of 23 recorded cases of hoof approval, with the most common proportion of horses in the age category 11-15 years (34.8%). The disease was mainly found in horses used for recreation (78.3%) who had 60.9% physiological hooves. The disease was found in most horses (91.3%) in the clinical phase, most often after lameness (69.6%). The main cause of hoof approval in our questionnaire survey was a nutrition error (82.6%). From the point of view of breeding, the disease was most frequently observed in the pony (73.9%).

Bachelor thesis is focused on diseases of the limbs in high-yield dairy cows, causes of diseases and their treatment options. Here are described factors that influence the incidence of disease in farms and its expansion. In the reporting breed was assessed health status hoof total of 437 dairy cows in three cycles of treatment. As part of a treatment cycle of the treatment, cure or control individual hooves of dairy cows. The most common disease was Rusterholz´s ulcer (56 %), other diseases assessed were represented on average 10 %. It was a foot rot, dermatitis digitalis, dermatitis interdigitalis and mechanical damage to limbs cows. No health problems have been a total of 20 % of dairy cows. Here are described factors that influence the incidence of disease in farms and its expansion. Finally, they were also considered external factors that can influence the health of the hoof. It was mainly the effect of diet, environment, technology, housing or affect the care of hooves.

In this study we tested experimentally whether the consumption of mammalian hooves by termites of the genus Odontotermes is a mere incidental, previously overlooked event, or whether higher termites frequently exploit hooves of ungulates as a supplementary food source. The experiment was conducted in the open woodland savanna region of Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. In total, 88 hooves of wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and zebra (Equus burchelli) – of two age classes – were offered to the termites in the field. After five days, 18.3% of old and 15.0% of fresh wildebeest hooves and 16.7% of old zebra hooves were utilized by termites as a food source. Accordingly, we report here for the first time a systematic, frequent necrophorous foraging behavior of termites in general, which also adds termites to the very short list of potential decomposers of mammalian hooves. Termites of the genus Odontotermes seem not to show a preference for a specific age class of the provided wildebeest hooves. Our results suggest that ungulate hooves represent a spatially and temporarily highly variable, potentially macro- and micronutrient-rich, supplementary food source for higher termites in this savanna ecosystem. Termites of the genus Odontotermes might accordingly be considered as being not only decomposers, but also optional necrophores, i.e. being keratophagous. Members of this genus might play an important role in the decomposition of mammalian hooves in African savannas.

Most free-stall housing systems in the Netherlands are equipped with slatted or solid concrete floors with manure scrapers. A slipping incident occurs when the required coefficient of friction (RCOF) exceeds the coefficient of friction (COF) at the claw-floor interface. An experiment was conducted to measure ground reaction forces (GRF) of dairy cows (n = 9) performing various locomotory behaviors on a nonslippery rubber-covered concrete floor. The RCOF was determined as the ratio of the horizontal and vertical components of the GRF. It was shown that during straight walking and walking-a-curve, the RCOF reached values up to the COF, whereas for sudden stop-and-start responses, the RCOF reached values beyond the maximum COF that concrete floors can provide. Our results indicate that concrete floors do not provide enough friction to allow natural locomotory behavior and suggest that tractional properties of floors should be main design criteria in the development of better flooring surfaces for cattle.

Diese Arbeit hatte zum Ziel, klare Aussagen über die Wirksamkeit des Einsatzes hoher Dosen (3 g) intravenösen OTC zur Behandlung angeborener Stelzfüße und erworbener Fohlenbockhufe sowie über die medizinische Vertretbarkeit dieser Therapiemaßnahme zu treffen. Es sollte ein Überblick gewonnen werden, wie weit systemische OTC Behandlungen beider Erkrankungen heute in Tierärztlichen Kliniken und in Tierärztlichen Praxen verbreitet sind. Über einen Vergleich der unterschiedlichen Behandlungsmöglichkeiten sollte geklärt werden, welche die derzeit empfehlenswerteste(n) Therapiemaßnahme(n) für beide Erkrankungen sind. Fünfundachtzig Tierärzte und Tierärztinnen, tätig in unterschiedlichen Einrichtungen, wurden angeschrieben und darum gebeten den für diese Arbeit entwickelten tabellarischen Fragebogen auszufüllen und zurückzusenden. Vergleichend ermittelt wurden die Anzahl durchgeführter Behandlungen mit den unterschiedlichen Behandlungsmaßnahmen sowie die Behandlungserfolge dieser bei beiden Erkrankungen. Es fand eine Einschätzung der Behandlungsmethoden und ihrer Behandlungserfolge statt. Insbesondere wurde die medizinische Vertretbarkeit der hier in Frage stehenden Behandlungsmaßnahme kritisch geprüft. In der Saison 2009/2010 liegt eine Gesamtanzahl von 61 angeborenen Stelzfüßen und 51 erworbenen Fohlenbockhufen von insgesamt 1215 untersuchten Fohlen vor. Es ergeben sich Hinweise auf eine heute weite Verbreitung systemischer OTC Behandlungen (bis zu 3 g) zur Therapie angeborener Stelzfüße und erworbener Fohlenbockhufe in Tierärztlichen Kliniken und in Tierärztlichen Praxen. Die früher dominierenden konservativen Therapiemaßnahmen beider Erkrankungen haben zugunsten intravenöser OTC Behandlungen an Bedeutung verloren. Systemische OTC Behandlungen erwiesen sich in dieser Tierärztebefragung als höchst effektive Behandlungsmaßnahme angeborener Stelzfüße und auch erworbener Fohlenbockhufe, bei gleichzeitig keiner sicher festgestellten UAW dieses AB. Mithilfe der konservativen Therapiemöglichkeiten wurden sehr gute Behandlungsergebnisse angeborener Stelzfüße und gute Behandlungsergebnisse erworbener Fohlenbockhufe erzielt. Diese Ergebnisse belegen die bis heute bestehende Aktualität der Arbeiten, die diese Nachweise schon in den 70er und 90er Jahren erbrachten (ZELLER u. HERTSCH 1976; PHILIPP 1991). Eine vergleichende Bewertung der risikoärmsten Behandlungsart des angeborenen Stelzfußes und auch des Fohlenbockhufes konnte nicht angestellt werden. Letztendlich sind weitere Untersuchungen notwendig, um eindeutig klären zu können, ob systemische OTC Behandlungen beider Erkrankungen den konservativen Behandlungsmaßnahmen vorgezogen werden sollten. Es bleibt festzuhalten, dass auch die ausschließlich konservativen Therapiemaßnahmen beider Erkrankungen nicht risikolos sind. Die hier in Frage stehende Behandlungsmethode muss unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten allerdings noch kritisch betrachtet werden. Sie kann trotz der positiven Ergebnisse dieser Tierärztebefragung zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt noch nicht uneingeschränkt empfohlen werden. Möglicherweise existiert mit der hier untersuchten Behandlungsmaßnahme beider Erkrankungen eine wertvolle Alternative zu allen bislang zur Verfügung stehenden Therapiemöglichkeiten., The aim of this study was to evaluate effectiveness and risks of the intravenous application of high doses of oxytetracycline (3g) for the treatment of congenital flexural limb deformities and clubfoot via a survey including equine practioners. We want to give a review how widely used is this treatment method in veterinarian hospitals and practices. For this reason, a questionnaire was created and sent to veterinarians at different institutions. The following data were collected: number of treatments with different protocols as well as success, side effects and practicability of the treatments. In the surveyed period 2009 to 2010, 61 cases of congenital flexural limb deformities and 51 cases of clubfeet were diagnosed in a total of 1215 examined foals. The results indicate that the treatment of congenital flexural limb deformities and clubfeet with intravenous application of high doses of oxytetracycline has superseded conservative treatments and is now widely used in veterinarian hospitals and practices. It has been highly effective and there was no adverse reaction to the drug noticed. Conservative treatment yielded very good and good results, too. The findings of this study are in agreement with studies performed in the 70`s and 90`s (ZELLER u. HERTSCH 1976; PHILIPP 1991). So far, it could not be determined which treatment protocol had the lowest possible risk for the foals but conservative treatments also are not without risks. However, the treatment of foals with high doses of oxytetracycline has still to be seen critically from different aspects. Although it represents an useful alternative for the treatment of congenital flexural limb deformities and clubfoot, it cannot yet be recommended without limitations. Therefore, more studies are necessary to determine mechanisms of action, possible risks and benefits of high doses of intravenous oxytetracycline.

In Ableitung zweier Beobachtungen, dem immer wieder beschriebenen „Klammgehen“ frisch beschlagener Pferde und dem Nachweis der Gefäßauslöschung im Bereich der Huflederhaut durch Druck mittels einer Hufuntersuchungszange, ergab sich die Fragestellung, ob durch einen regelhaft durchgeführten Hufbeschlag mit glatten Eisen und Nägeln eine Kompression der Sohlenrandarterie und ihres Versorgungsgebietes aufgrund des durch den Beschlag direkt einwirkenden Druckes ausgelöst werden könnte und damit Grundlage für diverse akute und chronische Folgen des Hufbeschlags sei. Von den Gliedmaßen von 31 krankheitsbedingt euthanasierten oder verstorbenen hufgesunden Pferden aus dem Patientengut der Pferdeklinik der Freien Universität Berlin wurden insgesamt 71 Präparate der Hufe erstellt. Die Präparate wurden in drei Gruppen eingeteilt: 28 Präparate wurden mit unterschiedlicher Technik beschlagen (feste Nieten, lose Nieten, dünne Sohle), bei 18 Präparaten wurde der vorbestehende Hufbeschlag belassen, und 25 Präparate zuvor unbeschlagener Pferde wurden ohne Beschlag belassen und dienten als Kontrollgruppe. Die Darstellung der Arterien im Sohlenrandbereich erfolgte mittels einer röntgenologischen Kontrastmittelstudie des Hufbeines. Die Angiogramme wurden hinsichtlich einer Unterbrechung der Kontrastmittelfüllung im Verlauf der Sohlenrandarterie untersucht. Mit den vorliegenden Ergebnissen konnte kein Zusammenhang zwischen Gefäßunterbrechungen an der Sohlenrandarterie und dem Hufbeschlag erkannt werden. Von der unbeschlagenen Kontrollgruppe zeigten 12,0% (3/25), aus der Vergleichsgruppe 5,6% (1/18) und aus der Gruppe der experimentell beschlagenen 7,1% (2/28) mindestens eine Unterbrechung der Sohlenrandarterie. Mittels Beschlag mit glattem Eisen und Nägeln und in korrekt ausgeführter Beschlagtechnik konnte am Präparat auch bei dünnen Sohlen keine Komprimierung der Sohlenrandarterie provoziert werden. Die Versuchsanordnung lässt keine Aussage zu, ob unter zusätzlicher Berücksichtigung des Eigengewichts des Pferdes und der Bewegungsbelastung eine durchblutungsrelevante Kompression der Gefäße im Sohlenrandbereich entstehen kann. Ebenso konnten beschlagsbedingte pathophysiologische Gewebsreaktionen nicht berücksichtigt werden, die ihrerseits eine Kompression der Gefäße bzw. eine Mangeldurchblutung auslösen können oder schmerzverursachende Veränderungen bewirken. Gefäßuntersuchungen an lebenden Pferden unter Berücksichtigung aller beeinflussenden Faktoren sowie der Gewebsreaktionen wären notwendig, um die Fragestellung zu klären., From the following two phenomena the question arises whether shoeing horses regularly with iron horse shoes and nails may determine a compression of the circumflex artery of the sole and the area it supplies initiated by the direct pressure of the shoeing and thus be the cause for various acute and chronic dysfunctions occurring in hoof shoeing. The first phenomena is the often observed clammy movement of newly shod horses and the second is the detectable extinction of blood vessel patterns in the corium of the hoof when compressed by a hoof examination forceps. From 31 horses with healthy hooves that died or were euthanized at the Equine hospital of the Free University of Berlin, 71 specimens of hooves were obtained. The specimens were divided in three Groups: 28 of the formerly unshod specimens were shod by different techniques (tightly studded, loosely studded, and normally studded but weakened hoof sole), 18 of the specimens were already shod when obtained and left that way and 25 of the formerly unshod stayed unshod as reference group. The circumflex artery of the sole has been displayed by a radiographic contrast agent study of the coffin bone. Subsequently, the angiograms were examined for disruptions of the contrast filling in the circumflex artery of the sole. The results of this study did not reveal a correlation between filling defects at the circumflex artery of the sole and shoeing. Twelve percent (3/25) of the unshod reference group, 5,6% (1/18) of the previously shod and 7,1% (2/28) of the experimentally shod specimen showed at least one disruption of the circumflex artery of the sole. Shoeing horses with iron horse shoes and nails using correct shoeing technique could not produce a compression of the circumflex artery of the sole - even in specimens with thin soles. The experimental assembly did not allow any conclusion as to whether a compression of the circumflex artery of the sole relevant to blood flow could be induced when body weight of the horse and strain of movement are taken into consideration. Furthermore, pathophysiologic mechanism of tissue due to shoeing such as local inflammation triggering contraction of blood vessels and reduction of blood flow could not be observed with this study design. In vivo angiographic studies would be necessary to further evaluate these important questions.

The investigation was performed in three Bulgarian free-stall cattle farms with different flooring types. The floor of farm A was covered with two rubber mat types, with and without abrasion lining. At the other two farms, floors were made of grooved concrete which was used for 6 years (farm B) and for 4 years (farm C). The purpose of the investigation was to determine the friction coefficients on the different floorings with tribometer described by Phillips and Morris (2000) and the influence of some factors as usage period, presence of manure and water on the floor. The coefficient of static friction of dry floors at the studied farms varied from 0.46 on the concrete floor at farm B to 0.59 on the rubber floor with abrasion lining. It indicated that dry floors at the surveyed farms provided good safety for standing animals. The dynamic friction of dry floors was the lowest at farm B – 0.44, and the highest on the rubber floor with abrasion lining at farm 1 – 0.56. When water was spilled on the floor, static friction coefficients of all studied floorings decreased except for the rubber floor with abrasion lining, where it increased up to 0.61. The dynamic friction coefficients were lower when all floors were wet. The lowest dynamic friction coefficient was determined on the floor at farm B – 0.39, which is under the critical minimum. This was attributed to its longer usage and thus, its wearing and smoothing. Static friction coefficients on manure-covered floors varied from 0.4 to 0.49. The lowest dynamic friction coefficient (0.36) was measured on the floor at farm B, and the highest (0.46) – on the rubber floor with abrasion lining, farm A.

Objasnění vztahu mezi mechanickým chováním a mikroskopickou strukturou laminárního spoje koňského kopyta. Cíl: Stanovit mechanické parametry a 2D délkovou hustotu profilů sekundárních lamel laminárního spoje v dermální oblasti a určit jejich možnou korelaci. Metody: Vzorky (25 celkově) laminárního spoje byly odebrány z přední, postranní a zadní části tří kopyt a vystaveny jednoosému tahovému mechanickému zatížení až do porušení tkáně. Byly stanoveny Youngovi moduli elasticity, mezní napětí a mezní deformace. Vzorky sousedící se tkání použitou na mechanické testy byly histologicky zpracovány pro získání délkové hustoty bazální membrány laminárního spoje pomocí stereologické mřížky. Výsledky: Medián (interval mezi quartily) délkové hustoty bazální membrány laminárního spoje byl 0.024 (0.020–0.027)/um. Youngův modul elasticity pro malé deformace byl 0.15 (0.11–0.35) MPa a pro velké deformace 7.58 (6.14–8.68) MPa. Mezní napětí dosahovalo hodnot 1.67 (1.41–2.67) MPa a mezni deformace 0.50 (0.38–0.70). Youngův modul elasticity v oblasti malých deformací vykazoval střední korelaci s délkovou hustotou bazální membrány laminárního spoje. Závěr: Jako většina měkkých biologických tkání laminární spoj vykazuje nelineární mechanické chování. V oblasti malých deformací, které korelují s fyziologickým zatížením laminárního spoje, větší délková hustota bazální membrány laminárního spoje odpovídá větší odolnosti laminárního spoje vůči velkému napětí přenášenému z distálního článku prstu na kopytní stěnu. Potenciální významnost: Stav laminárního spoje může být jednoduše stanovený jako délková hustota profilů sekundárních dermálních lamel. Tato kvantifikace poskytuje jednoduchý nástroj pro porovnávání náklonosti různých částí laminárního spoje k počátečním stadiím Reason for performing the study: To elucidate the relationship between mechanical behavior and microscopic morphology of the corio-epidermal junction (CEJ) of equine hooves under testing conditions. Objectives: To determine the mechanical parameters and the two-dimensional length density of profiles of secondary lamellae of the CEJ in the dermal region (LA(SL, dermal)) and to assess possible correlations. Methods: Specimens of the CEJ were taken from the front, quarter and heel parts from three equine hooves, (n=25) and exposed to a uniaxial tensile test until rupture to obtain Young’s moduli of elasticity, ultimate stress, and strain. The neighboring specimens to those used for biomechanical experiment were processed histologically to quantify the LA(SL, dermal) using stereological grids. Results: The estimated LA(SL, dermal) was 0.022±0.006 m-1 (mean±SD). Young’s modulus of elasticity in the small deformation region was 0.31±0.04 MPa, and Young’s modulus of elasticity in the linear region was 7.58±1.59 MPa. The ultimate stress was 2.09±0.96 MPa, and the ultimate strain was 0.59±0.25. The mechanical Young’s modulus of elasticity in the region of small deformations has a moderate correlation with the LA(SL, dermal). Conclusions: As with most soft biological tissues, the CEJ has a nonlinear mechanical behavior. Within the range of small deformations, which correspond to physiological loading of the CEJ, a higher LA(SL, dermal) is correlated with a higher resistance of the CEJ against high stresses transmitted from the distal phalanx to the hoof wall. Potential relevance: The condition of the CEJ apparatus may be easily quantified as the length density of the profiles of secondary dermal lamellae. Quantification of LA(SL, dermal) provides a simple tool that could be used e.g., for comparing the proneness of the various parts of the CEJ to initial stages of laminitis.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde das Hornwachstum bei 117 an chronischer Hufrehe erkrankten Pferdehufen beurteilt. Untersucht wurde ein möglicher Zusammenhang zwischen einer Lageveränderung des Hufbeins (Hufbeinrotation oder Senkung) und dem Auftreten von Veränderungen im Hornwachstum im Bereich der dorsalen und der seitlichen Hufwand. Es erfolgte eine Beurteilung der angefertigten Röntgenaufnahmen nach dem Winkel der palmaren/plantaren und der medialen/lateralen Hufbeinrotation sowie einer Hufbeinsenkung. Die Mehrzahl der Hufe zeigte eine Hufbeinrotation, während eine Senkung des Hufbeins nur in geringer Zahl auftrat. Es konnte ein Zusammenhang zwischen dem Grad der palmaren/plantaren Hufbeinrotation und dem Auftreten einer Störung des Hornwachstums festgestellt werden. Weiterhin konnte ein Rotationswinkel von 8° als Grenzwert bestimmt werden, bei dem mit dem Auftreten einer Richtungsänderung des Röhrchenhorns sowohl im Bereich der dorsalen als auch im seitlichen Bereich der Hufwand zu rechnen ist. In dieser Studie zeigten 75% aller Hufe, bei denen ein Rotationswinkel von mindestens 8° gemessen wurde, eine Faltenbildung der Kronhornröhrchen im Wandsegment. Weiterhin konnte eine Korrelation zwischen dem palmaren/plantaren Rotationswinkel des Hufbeins und dem äußerlich sichtbaren Längenwachstum des Hufes festgestellt werden. Je größer der Winkel der Hufbeinrotation, umso größer ist das Verhältnis der äußerlich erkennbaren Länge der Trachten zur äußerlich erkennbaren Länge der Dorsalwand. Somit ist bei einem großen Rotationswinkel des Hufbeins auch mit einer stärkeren Beeinflussung des Hornwachstums der dorsalen Hufwand zu rechnen, während das Hornwachstum im Trachtenbereich unbeeinträchtigt zu sein scheint. Es konnte keine Korrelation zwischen der seitlichen Hufbeinrotation und dem sichtbaren Längenwachstum der Hufe hergestellt werden. Möglicherweise stellt die Richtungsänderung der Kronhornröhrchen eine Ursache für das verminderte äußerlich sichtbare Längenwachstum eines chronischen Rehehufes dar. Scheinbar ist die Hornbildungsrate an der dorsalen Hufwand und an den Trachten gleich groß. Die Hornröhrchen liegen an der Dorsalwand bei einer mittelgradigen Hufrehe in Falten, was sich in einem verminderten äußerlich erkennbaren Längenwachstum äußert. Die Menge des produzierten Horns und auch die tatsächliche Länge der Hornröhrchen scheinen sowohl im Trachtenbereich, als auch im Bereich der Dorsalwand gleich groß zu sein. Nur die Faltenbildung der Hornröhrchen reduziert das äußerlich sichtbare und messbare Längenwachstum im Bereich der dorsalen Hufwand. Eine Faltenbildung der Hornröhrchen an den Trachten konnte nicht festgestellt werden. Das Röhrchenhorn verläuft hier gestreckt proximodistal. Dieser Unterschied zur Dorsalwand des Hufes könnte eine Ursache für ein scheinbar schnelleres Hornwachstum im Trachtenbereich sein. Ein Zusammenhang zwischen dem Grad der seitlichen Hufbeinrotation und dem Auftreten einer Veränderung im Hornwachstum konnte ebenfalls ermittelt werden. So wurde bei einem geringeren Rotationswinkel eine Faltenbildung der Hornröhrchen im Bereich der dorsalen und der seitlichen Hufwand beobachtet. Grenzwerte für beides konnten in dieser Studie nicht bestimmt werden. Allerdings bleibt zu beachten, dass nicht sicher ist, ob eine seitliche Hufbeinrotation ausschließlich im Rahmen einer Hufreheerkrankung auftreten kann., In the presented study the horn growth on 117 chronic laminitis hooves was assessed. The intention was to figure out a correlation between rotation and/or sinking of the pedal bone and changes of hoof growth on the dorsal and sidewise hoof wall. A determination of the rotating angle to palmar/plantar and medial/lateral and a sinking of P3 was effected on x-rays. Most of the examined hooves showed a rotation of the pedal bone, a sinking of P3 however only occurred rarely. A significant correlation between appearance of interrupted horn growth and the angle of rotation of P3 could be observed. At first an angle of rotation about 8° could be figured out to predict a compression of horn substance on dorsal and sidewise hoof wall. More than 75% of the examined hooves with a rotation angle of at least 8° showed such a compression. Further on, it was possible to highlight a correlation between the rotation angle of P3 and the length growth of the hoof. The bigger the angle of palmar/plantar rotation was, the bigger was the relation between the lengths of the palmar/plantar aspect of the hoof to the dorsal aspect. A greater angle could lead to a bigger interruption of the dorsal horn growth; meanwhile the palmar/plantar horn growth seemed to be independent. A correlation between a medial/lateral rotation of the pedal bone and the length of the horn could not be observed. On the other hand a significant correlation of medial/lateral rotation and interruption of horn growth could be figured out. A smaller angle of medial/lateral rotation was related with a bigger compression of horn substance on dorsal and sidewise hoof wall. Limit values as shown for palmar/plantar rotation could not be named. Admittedly it has to be said, that the appearance of medial/lateral rotation could not be assured as a consequence of laminitis. Other effects like abnormal hoof bearing can lead to similar x-ray findings. Because of the small number of hooves with a sinking of P3, it was impossible to find any evidence to changes of horn growth in these cases.

The aim of this paper was to determine the standard measures of the hoof: length, height, heel height and hoof surface in breeding bulls as indicators for the correction of hoofs. The paper deals with healthy and pathologically altered hooves of 11 Simmental bulls, owned by the Center for Animal Reproduction of Croatia, Zagreb, Croatia. After measuring these dimensions, their mean values were calculated, and a statistically significant difference between values within each group of parameters and a certain correlation between the mean values and weight of each bull was determined. The average length of the front leg hoof in investigated breeds of bulls was 9.39 cm, and the average length of the hind leg hoof was 9.92 cm. The average height of the front leg hoof was 8.63 cm and average height of the rear leg hoof was 8.65 cm. The average hoof heel height in the front legs of researched bulls was 5.93 cm, and average height of the rear leg hoof heel was 5.09 cm. The average surface of the front leg hoof was 122.46 cm² and the rear hoof 102.49 cm². A significant and a very high correlation exists for the total area of hoofs in relation to body mass of breeding bulls, and this correlation is more pronounced in the hoof surface of the front leg and body weight than the surface of the hind leg hoof and body weight. Hoof area increases with increasing body weight and degree of correlation is more pronounced in the front legs than the rear. This is related to the fact that the front legs suffer greater physiological load.

Bij conventioneel bekapte hoeven heeft de straal niet tot nauwelijks contact met de grond. Het wordt verondersteld dat de energieabsorberende functie van de straal hierbij gereduceerd is of mogelijk zelfs vrijwel afwezig is. Het valt te verwachten dat een hoef waarvan de straal een goed contact maakt met de ondergrond een geringere impactversnelling zal hebben dan een hoef waarvan de straal niet of nauwelijks de grond raakt.Om deze hypothese te testen ondergingen 10 klinisch gezonde warmbloedpaarden drie achtereenvolgende behandelingen; 1. Onbekapt (controle meting); 2. Bekapte hoefwand + onbekapte straal; 3. Bekapte hoefwand + bekapte straal.het bekappen van de straal lijkt geen invloed te hebben op bovenstaande parameters. Het is echter niet uit te sluiten dat er bij een andere proefopzet(bijvoorbeeld bij lopen op een betonvloer) wel verschillen gevonden kunnen worden

In der Semizirkumferenz des Hufes wurde die weiße Linie mittels mesoskopischer und lichtmikroskopischer Methoden an insgesamt 21 rechten adulten Vorderhufen und einem juvenilen rechten Vorderhuf untersucht. Hierbei wurden die Hufe vor Probenentnahme und morphometrischer Beurteilung einer genau definierten Hufzubereitung unterzogen und anatomische Orientierungspunkte herausgearbeitet, um reproduzierbare und vergleichbare Ergebnisse zu erhalten. Es wurden an der weißen Linie sowohl mesoskopische als auch mikroskopische Parameter ermittelt, wofür histologische Präparate mit PAS-Färbung von je neun definierten Arealen der weißen Linie angefertigt wurden. Zusätzlich wurden einige Parameter der Hornkapsel bestimmt, um Zusammenhänge zwischen ihr und der individuellen Struktur der weißen Linie zu erkennen. Die Breite, Höhe und Zusammensetzung der weißen Linie variieren sehr stark in Abhängig-keit von ihrer Lokalisation in der Semizirkumferenz des Hufes. Die weiße Linie ist im Zehenrückenteil am breitesten und nimmt nach palmar ab. Die primären Epidermisblättchen (Hornblättchen) sind im Zehenrückenteil sehr viel dichter aneinander gedrängt und von gestrecktem Verlauf. Je weiter nach palmar, desto größer sind die Abstände zwischen den schmaler werdenden Blättchen, deren Verlauf zunehmend gebogen ist. Gleichzeitig nimmt die Menge des weichen Zwischenblättchenhornes nach palmar zu. Dies spiegelt die Funktion des Hufbeinträgers in den korrespondierenden Gebieten wieder: in der vorderen Hufhälfte dominiert die Aufhängung des Hufbeines (=Tragefunktion), in der hinteren Hufhälfte die elastische Verankerung, die die Bewegung der Hornkapsel seitlich eingrenzt. Die Spitzen der Hornblättchen zeigen, außer im Eckstrebenbereich, immer in Richtung Hufmittelpunkt. Die Größe, Anzahl und Anordnung der Terminalhornröhrchen variieren sehr stark zwischen den Hufen und innerhalb eines Hufes. Häufig sind in einem Zwischenblättchenspalt zusätzliche Reihen ausgebildet oder die Terminalhornröhrchen liegen ohne erkennbare Regelmäßigkeit der Anordnung vor. Besonders im palmaren Hufbereich sind die Bestandteile der weißen Linie (Blättchen sowie Terminal- und Kappenhornröhrchen) stark individuell ausgeprägt., The white line of the hoof was investigated in its semi-circumference using light microscopy and morphological techniques. A total of 21 right front hooves of adult horses and one juvenile right front hoof were analyzed. Previous to sample taking and morphometric evaluation feet were trimmed according to a defined trimming method and anatomical landmarks were developed in order to obtain comparable results in a reproducible manner. PAS-dyed histological slides of nine defined section sites of the white line were microscopi-cally analyzed. Additionally parameters of the horn capsule were determined to detect any coherence with the individual structure of the white line. Width, height and structural composition of the white line vary strongly according to the area the sample is taken from within the hoof. The white line is widest in the toe region and gets thinner palmarly. Primary epidermal lamellae in the toe region are very densely spaced and have a straight appearance. The further palmar the section site, the larger the gap is between two Lamellae. Palmarly the lamellae also get smaller, with a bended appearance. At the same time the amount of soft interlamellar horn increases. This reflects the function of the proximal lamellar junction in the corresponding areas: in the dorsal part of the hoof the suspension of P3 dominates (=weight bearing function), whereas in the palmar part of the hoof the lamellar junction is an elastic anchorage, which restricts the collateral outward movement (spreading) of the palmar horn capsule. Except for the region of the bars, the apex of the epidermal lamellae always point toward the center of the hoof. Size, amount and arrangement of terminal horn tubules vary a lot in between individual hooves and within the same hoof. In many cases between two lamellae there are additional queues of terminal horn tubules or terminal horn tubules are arranged without any sort of pattern. Especially in the palmar areas of the hoof the structures of the white line (epidermal lamellae as well as terminal and cap horn tubules) are developed strongly individual.

Zum Schutz vor zu starkem Hornabrieb wurde von verschiedenen Völkern, vermutlich zwischen dem 6. und 10. Jahrhundert n. Chr.,. der genagelte Hufbeschlag entwickelt. Die Entwicklung der Hufeisen für die verschiedenen Verwendungszwecke und zur Korrektur von Gliedmaßenfehlstellungen, oder gar eine Behandlung von Erkrankungen des Hufes, bzw. Lahmheiten erfolgte jedoch erst Ende des 19./ Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die vorliegende Untersuchung beschäftigt sich speziell mit den seit dieser Zeit entwickelten Rehehufeisen. Die Grundlage der Untersuchung bildet die Analyse der Hufeisensammlung der ehemaligen veterinärmedizinischen Bildungsstätte am Standort Berlin- Mitte. Sämtliche an dortiger Stelle aufbewahrten Hufeisen wurden fotografiert und analysiert. Darüber hinaus wurden die Hufrehebeschläge in den Hufbeschlagsmuseen/ Ausstellungen der Veterinärmedizinischen Universität in Wien, der Veterinärmedizinischen Fakultät der Universität Leipzig und des Museums der Universität Hohenheim vergleichend betrachtet. Trotz enormem Wissenszuwachs ist die optimale Therapie der Hufrehe auch heute nicht gefunden. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit der entsprechenden orthopädischen Behandlung. Um eine Dislokation des Hufbeins bei der akuten Hufrehe zu verhindern, oder ein Fortschreiten der Erkrankung zu vermeiden (einzudämmen) müssen die auf den Hufbeinträger einwirkenden Kräfte reduziert werden. Um die gesunden Bereiche des Hufes zu belasten und die kranken Bereiche zu entlasten eignet sich die Trachtenanhebung. Der Zug der tiefen Beugesehne auf das Hufbein wird gleichermaßen reduziert. Im chronischen Stadium sollte der Rehehufbeschlag den Abrollvorgang erleichtern und die Zehenachse langsam gestreckt werden. Die empfindliche Sohle muss in jedem Falle vor Traumata geschützt werden. In der Hufeisensammlung der ehemaligen veterinärmedizinischen Bildungsstätte in Berlin- Mitte finden sich zu diesem Zweck zehn verschiedene Hufeisen. Diese Sammlung ist bezüglich der verschiedenen Hufrehebeschläge die umfangreichste der vier verglichenen Standorte. Die alten Hufeisen genügen bereits zu weiten Teilen den noch heute gültigen Ansprüchen an einen adäquaten Hufrehebeschlag. Die Vorzüge und Nachteile der ausgestellten Rehehufeisen wiegen dabei unterschiedlich schwer. Der Forderung, die nicht erkrankten Bereiche des Hufes vermehrt zu belasten, um demzufolge kranke Areale zu entlasten, die empfindliche Sohle zu schützen und den Zug der tiefen Beugesehne zu reduzieren wird je nach Hufeisentyp mehr oder weniger nachgekommen. Noch keine Rolle spielte bei der Entwicklung der aufgeführten Hufrehebeschläge die Frage nach einem erleichterten Abrollvorgang., During domestication of the horse and its utilization for riding, carrying and towing, their feet were exposed to excessive loads. For Protection of excessive horn capsular abrasion nailed horse shoeing has been developed by different cultures in between 6th and 10th century AD. The development of shoes for particular purposes, for correction of mal- positioned limbs and the treatment of foot diseases and lameness occurred first in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This investigation is targeting the shoes for laminitis treatment of this time period in particular. It is based on the analysis of the horse shoe collection of the former veterinary medical school of the Humboldt- University in Berlin- Mitte. All horse shoes presented in this location were photographed and analysed. Moreover, these horse shoes were compared to those of the exhibitions at the veterinary schools in Vienna and Leipzig as well as to the collection of the Hohenheim University museum. Until today there is no optimal therapy for laminitis despite enormous increase of knowledge. Analogically there is no optimal orthopaedic treatment available. The forces applied to the foot suspensory must be reduces to prevent dislocation of the pedal bone and to decrease further progress of the disease. Heel elevation is recommended to load sound areas of the foot and to decrease load of the diseased areas. The traction of the deep digital flexor tendon is reduced as well. In chronic laminitis the shoeing should ease the break-over and extend the foot carefully. The damageable sole must be protected from trauma in any case. Ten specific laminitis shoes are located in the collection of the former veterinary medical school in Berlin- Mitte. Concerning different types of shoeing Berlin has the most comprehensive collection of all four locations. Compared to today’s laminitis shoeing the old shoes are still adequate. The pros and cons of the exhibited laminitis shoes are weighed differently. To a greater or lesser extend the shoes satisfy the demand to load the healthy parts of the foot, hence to reduce load on diseased parts, to protect the sole and to reduce traction of the deep digital flexor tendon. At the time no consideration was given to the focalisation of break-over in the examined shoeings.
