This article proposes interpreting the narrator of Teju Cole's Every Day is for the Thief (2014) as a 'motorized returnee', exploring how his visual experiences through the windows of various modes of transportation resonate with his perception of 'returning home'. I argue that the narrator's progressive motorized lens reflects his deepening understanding of the transience of homelike landscapes and the irreversibility of his departure from home. As he navigates through different modes of transportation, the distance between him and his former hometown gradually narrows. Such progression is mirrored in the changing states of vehicle windows, moving from closed to open, and eventually, to a state where their presence is entirely neglected, depicting his transition from a detached observer's perspective to an embedded inhabitant's one. My analysis highlights that the danfo bus emerges as pivotal, both thematically and formally, during the narrator's homecoming trip, providing him with a liminal space that maintains a balance between distance and proximity, estrangement, and vulnerability to unpack his complex perceptions of the landscapes of Lagos. What does it mean to feel passionately for the subject one teaches? What does such a passion entail for those involved in the teaching–learning situation? This study focuses on the teacher's passion for their subject. Nine scholarly texts were reviewed, which allowed for four distinct notions of passion to be discerned: i.e., romantic, friendly, erotic, and divine love. Findings showed also combinations of these notions as well as ontological variations. Inductively created themes revealed that the foundations of these different notions of passion ranged from love of the Truth and the Good to a calling from the subject, and that the character of these notions ranged from them being about intellectual and emotional allure to being about their being disclosed and brought to fulfilment. It also revealed what the different notions of love entailed for the teacher, the student, and the subject itself: for the teacher—from a demand to seek the good in the subject to a requirement to perceive the subject as a voice, the subject in turn making their life meaningful; for the student—from becoming part of the community of "we who love subject X" to a "homecoming of self-hood"; and for the subject itself—from beginning to reveal itself to holding teachers and students accountable. "How does the entrance of a character on the tragic stage affect their visibility and presence? "This question is at the heart of Juliane Vogel's latest book, Making an Entrance: Appearing on the Stage from Racine to Nietzsche (2022), which analyzes the precarious act of stepping forward and, at the same time, develops a new theory of dramatic form. Taking Vogel's approach as a starting point, this essay examines the specific mode of entering the stage in Sophocles's nostos play Philoctetes. It argues that plot-based interpretation is insufficient to account for the structure of the play and the specific type of entrance that Philoctetes embodies. This kind of entrance differs strongly from the so-called ruler's entrance, which prominently exhibits a vertical posture. In Philoctetes, by contrast, as in the Woman of Trachis, the horizontal axis is dominant. In both plays, relinquishing the vertical axis entails shifting the focus from war and military heroism to victims, who were either killed on the battlefield or, as Philoctetes, abandoned on a deserted island. This article explores the complicated process of post-deployment homecoming in military families in Denmark. Based on qualitative interviews with spouses and children of formerly deployed soldiers, the article analyses some of the main challenges related to homecoming and military-to-family transitions in military families. It illuminates how deployment affects family practices and social relations by especially focusing on gender equality, fatherhood, and masculinity. Based on interviews with spouses and children, the article outlines three masculinity positions available to Danish homecoming veterans: gender equality masculinities, militarized masculinities, and troubled masculinities. In the narrative of David and Bathsheba (2 Sam 11) Uriah the Hittite is encouraged by the king to go home to his wife yet refuses to do so. For some, Uriah's refusal is born out of piety and idealism, and he is unsuspecting of what has transpired between the king and his wife, Bathsheba. For others Uriah has caught wind of what has happened and realizes that David has summoned him precisely so that he should visit home, and cover David's malfeasance. A review of the evidence finds both approaches wanting. This study turns to the clinical literature concerning the challenges of homecoming from the battlefield and the emotional minefield that is combat furlough between two battlefront deployments, offering a deeper understanding of the figure of Uriah the Hittite and resolving many of the questions raised by Uriah's behavior in the narrative of 2 Sam 11. Background and Objectives There have been major changes in military service over the past 50 years. Most research on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among combat Veterans comes from help-seeking Vietnam and WWII cohorts; results from more recent cohort comparisons are mixed. The present study addressed these gaps by exploring cohort differences among Vietnam, Persian Gulf, and Post-9/11 combat Veterans from a life course perspective. Research Design and Methods We recruited community-dwelling combat and war zone Veterans (N = 167), primarily from Veterans' associations in Oregon from three cohorts: Vietnam, Persian Gulf, and Post-911. Online surveys assessed current PTSD symptoms, life course (demographics and cohort membership), and experiential variables (combat severity, appraisals of military service, homecoming, and social support). Results Cohorts were comparable in demographics and war experiences. Step one of a hierarchical regression found that PTSD symptoms were higher among Veterans of color and those with lower incomes, R 2 = 0.37, p <.001. When cohort was added, Vietnam Veterans had higher symptoms than Post-9/11; income and race/ethnicity remained significant, Δ R 2 = 0.01, p =.13. The final model added experiential variables, Δ R 2 = 0.38, p <.001; cohort and income were no longer significant, although Veterans of color still reported higher symptoms. Those with more undesirable service appraisals and who sought social support had higher symptoms, while desirable appraisals were protective. Discussion and Implications From a life course perspective, the particular war zone that Veterans served in was less important than demographics and both service and postservice experiences, suggesting generalizability of risk and protective factors, as well as treatment modalities, across cohorts. This article examines a sub-genre of postmemoirs which have been published since the mid1980s, written by children and grandchildren of veteran combatants of the Allied Forces. These British and American generational texts both preserve and unveil hidden historical memory of these men’s participation in what is often referred to as the deadliest war in human history. The silent suffering of these veterans and their families had not been widely disclosed until Stephen Spielberg’s film Saving Private Ryan opened a Pandora’s box. And yet, it remains an enigmatic memory in the collective consciousness of the post-war period. These writers recount the experiences not only of their fathers’ wars, but of homecoming and the subsequent psychological impact of the war on family life, whilst also attempting to understand and come to terms with their own traumatic resonances rooted in these veterans’ Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I discuss some examples of these texts, which include writers such as Germaine Greer, Lucinda Franks, Leila Levinson, Cole Moreton, or Carol Schultz Vento, who have written within this postmemoir sub-genre. I discuss some common approaches to these postmemorial narratives, which interweave tropes of archival romance, confessional literature, and historiographic metafiction. These family postmemoirs challenge the oft mythologized cultural memory of the ‘Good War’, question the meaning of heroism, and reveal the unspoken traumas of post-war familial life, and ultimately contribute not only to disclosing an unknown history but to broadening the thematic horizons of postmemory to the post-generations of Allied ex-servicemen.

This narrative inquiry utilizes a Quare theory framework to explore the stories of Black same-gender-loving (SGL) male romantic couples and how they reconcile family matters. In this study, "family matters" is a double entendre, that is, highlighting the importance of family bond and ongoing familial conflicts that impact intimate relationships. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the interrelations between the notions of one’s own and the foreign in later Heidegger’s philosophy. It is pointed out that later Heidegger contextualized the notion of the world by the notion of home and its derivatives “homelessness” and “homecoming” that are of great value in his philosophy. The scrutiny proceeds from the study of the peculiarities of Heidegger’s approach to the problem of being that is considered to be the knot of his philosophy. It is noted that Heidegger, having deserted the traditional ontology already in his early works, continued, nevertheless, using its terms including “being” for a long time and thereby in a way obscured the peculiarities of his approach. Only later Heidegger tried to reject the traditional concept of being as infinitely continuing state in favor of the concept of Ereignis that is usually translated as “appropriating event” or “event of appropriation”. Thus, according to Heidegger, being gives us beings as a whole by appropriating sense to them and thereby turning them into the familiar and accessible environment for dwelling. Just the “givenness” of beings as a whole makes them familiar, one’s own. Accordingly, the “dwelling” means for Heidegger not only the security, but also the intelligibility of the environment, whereas the homelessness means the latter’s uncanny incomprehensibility. It is emphasized that Heidegger’s interpretation of homelessness is closely connected with a standard theoretical model explaining the emergence of the private and public realms. According to this model, just the extension of family as the initial one’s own resulted in the turning of household into city-state that, having been specified by the image of one super-family, added the elements of the foreign to the initial state of society.

This article examines Hsia Moon and her momentous transition from a celebrated movie star emblematic of the Hong Kong leftist cinema in the 1950s and 1960s to a prescient and resourceful producer who returned to the film circle and founded Bluebird Movie Enterprises to produce three important pieces in 1982 to 1984: Touben nvhai (Boat People , Ann Hui), Zigu yingxiong chu shaonian (Little Heroes , Mou Dunfu), and Sishui liunian (Homecoming , Yim Ho). Through a close analysis of the film texts and production background alongside an original research of the historical documents and interviews with the filmmaker, I argue that Hsia Moon's Bluebird productions, ephemeral but highly influential, serve as conjuncture films at the crossroads of the post–Cold War and Sino-British negotiation era. This article examines two contemporary Chinese films that document the filmmakers' homecoming journey during the Chinese New Year: Sige chuntian (Four Springs) (Lu 2017) and Jixiang ruyi (The Reunions) (Da 2020). It argues that both films have the characteristic of being reflexive documentaries exploring and expanding the boundaries of documentary films. According to Meunier's three types of filmic identifications – the documentary attitude, the home-movie attitude and the fiction attitude – the two films challenge documentary norms and combine the documentary attitude with the other two types of attitude. Four Springs combines documentary and home movie by closely capturing the four journeys of homecoming confined in the private sphere of the filmmaker's home, whilst The Reunions combines documentary and fiction, and even actuality and performance, through actor Liu Lu's portrayal of the director Da Peng's cousin in the presence of his real family. By challenging these documentary forms, these two films reflect the directors' uses of documentary to memorialize their personal experiences with their families, more than merely reflecting the cultural phenomenon of the Chinese New Year homecoming. Despite a substantial body of scholarship on translations into different languages of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, studies of Chinese translations tend to neglect the more recent and shared translational trends across the Chinese-speaking world. While translations of the complete text establish the book's reputation by faithfully recreating Alice's outward adventure, partial translations have emerged in a larger number and enjoyed tremendous popularity. Some of these adapt the source story into a tale of homecoming. Comparing five selected translations in detail, I delve into the translation strategies employed in them to find out how and to what extent the original story is changed. The rationales behind these translations and the changes are discussed through the lens of dual poetics, i.e., the role of translation conceived in the target system of children's literature and the translators' child image. It finds that the choice between a full or partial rendering of the original is determined by the changing views of translation in the receiving system. At the same time, degrees of adaptation are almost entirely subject to the translators' multidimensional concepts of children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the homecoming and college transition narratives constructed by student veterans in order to help college clinicians a) to more holistically understand these veterans and their experiences, b) to more fully enter their phenomenological worlds, and c) to form more genuine and effective therapeutic relationships with them. Twelve student veteran participants were interviewed, and six common themes emerged from the analysis. Theoretical and clinical implications are provided, as well as more practical recommendations for college clinicians on how to increase campus-wide support and inclusivity for their student veterans. In Our Time can be interpreted as a cohesive work, presented in stories and vignettes, dealing with perpetual exile and the search for America. This exile plays out within stories and vignettes and over the course of the collection. With some feints and complications, the movement of the narrative is from America's past into exile (both internal and abroad), failed homecoming in the middle stories, a resumption of exile abroad, and a return to America followed by a final move into exile, with the collection's last line expressing a desire to come to America and "America" as its final word. Scholars, journalists, diplomats and even archivists routinely assert that to understand German–Italian relations one must start with Goethe. Without denying Goethe's importance, this article suggests that the emotional pull and prominence of Italy for postwar Germans may have had less to do with Goethe than with the Italian journey's importance as a shared script. By providing familiar sets of baseline behaviours and roles on which Italians and Germans could rely and to which they could attune their expectations, the script of the Italian journey helped smooth postwar tensions. It eased early West German travels and the pangs of national division, and for a time it also worked to salve Italians' own national wounds, in addition to bringing in much-needed tourist revenues. As a framework for social interaction, moreover, the Italian journey helped both Italians and Germans work around their complex relations and uncomfortable pasts. That it lives on as an explanation for foreign relations and a popular trope also points to the tradition's reinvention in the postwar period and its distance from the historical referent. The location of the Italian journey in the eighteenth century and the timeless quality that this long history gave to Germans' yearning for Italy continued to offer postwar Germans a claim to national cohesion. It served (theoretically) to unite, first, West Germans and then, after 1990, Germans east and west. As a salvageable national tradition, it had few competitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyses the theology of homecoming in the book of Isaiah and makes a case for using resilience theory as a hermeneutical frame for the task of Hebrew Scripture theology. Defined as "positive adaptation despite adversity", resilience builds on the crisis setting of wide parts of the Hebrew Scriptures and demonstrates that the formation of theology represents a resilience discourse. In the case of the Isaianic prophecies of return, three concepts of return are distinguished (return, gathering and homecoming, a second Exodus) that respond to the adversities of exile and diaspora. Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria (2012) by British-Nigerian writer Noo Saro-Wiwa is part travelogue and part memoir. The book chronicles Saro-Wiwa's return to Nigeria, the country in which her father, the activist and writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, was executed in 1995 and which she had not visited for more than ten years, except for two brief visits. Saro-Wiwa deploys trauma as a narrative strategy to show her grappling with her painful memories in relation to her family history and socio-political conditions in Nigeria. The effect of the deployment of the thematic motif of trauma in the structure of the narration is that the return, which explicitly sets out to resolve the past traumas, seemingly comes to re-enact those traumas instead. The paradoxical dramatic effect of being traumatised and being healed reveals the complexity of her diasporic identity and the ambivalence in both her travelling and her writing. The article examines how practices of remembering and recurring patterns of mobility to the same place work to consolidate one's sense of home and belonging. The authors investigate how experiences of at-homeness are reinvented through touring memories and practices of personal memory tourism. Repeated travels to diverse personal memory sites are analysed through the personal, autobiographic memories of residents of Slovenia as (mostly domestic) homecoming tourists. With the method of semi-structured in-depth interviews, the authors gathered 124 personal life-histories of revisiting and experiencing different places. Grasping the tensions inherent in these movements, the article identifies three distinct registers of homecoming tourism, the oscillation between two opposing patterns of appropriating the place (navigating vs. inhabiting the place), the frictions in family rituals and place sacralization which destabilize one's narrative of the place, and the issue of disenchantment whilst re-embedding and questioning one's belonging to a place. The findings emphasize that these persistent ambivalences repetitively delay one's return to (mythical) home, indicating thereby the fragility of reconstructions of (a lost) home. The authors conclude that there is a particular dialectic relationship between the idea of movement and the notion of home as it is articulated in the phenomenon of personal-memory tourism. This article details the author's journey through her hometown of Kuching, Sarawak, and the multisensorial experience of revisiting familial homes and key culinary heritage sites around the city. The everyday and the mundane are highlighted as key features which hold together the rich mosaic of the culinary traditions and history of Kuching. Kuching has recently been recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, which acknowledges its unique blend of historical and contemporary culinary practices. This article examines what this means for a city where hawker food culture is the lifeblood of Kuching, but also where a burgeoning gastronomic scene is increasingly drawing attention on the international stage. It argues for a revaluation of the traditional binaries between local food vendors (hawkers) and professional chefs, suggesting that both contribute to the city's culinary landscape. This approach will help form a comprehensive and inclusive understanding of Kuching as a UNESCO Creative City. Diaspora tourism has become a significant form of transnational mobility that underlies many issues in the field of tourism and migration studies. Despite a considerable body of research that focuses on tourism motivations of home return and its social functions in collective identities and meaning-making, the political roles of diaspora tourism in shaping ethnic bonds and transnational networks need to be further acknowledged. Since 2014, a group of Muslims from Kazakhstan have travelled to China to celebrate their return after over 140 years of displacement from their homeland. Interviews with local officials and residents in Xi'an illustrate the political factors of host governments and local Muslim communities in organising the formal group tourism events. Unlike informal and personal travel, such officially organised diaspora tourism does not serve as a simple act of homecoming. The host governments have used it as a political tool to shape transnational networks and domestic ethnic governance under the discourse of 'Belt and Road' initiative. To fulfil this political agenda, the official narrative of diaspora tourism involves a process of remembering and forgetting, and the creation of itineraries that authenticates the imagined ancestral homeland while effacing the unsettled past. The itinerary of tourism events and related cultural practices focuses on a shared ethno-religious identity and common interests of cultural and business exchange between the selected diaspora representatives and host communities. However, due to its political nature, the sustainability of diaspora tourism does not only relate to funding and resource management. Such organised diaspora tourism is also closely associated with the shifting ethnic and migration policies of the host nation-state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I enact moves of homecoming in which I reclaim knowledge that I had forgotten or never known. Drawing on wisdom traditions from my heritage, I discuss how I inform my philosophies of inquiry that are de/colonial, Par/Des(i), and transnational. I move between dreamspaces built by utopian desires and the materiality of our existence, connecting absurdity and nonsense as modes of inquiry and as critiques of and relief from multiply interconnected structures of oppression. Tracing back to a children's literature author in British-occupied India, I use the notions of absurdity and nonsense to reimagine qualitative research from a justice-oriented perspective. I conclude with my chosen exile from the postqualitative labeling of qualitative research to focus on ways of being that are culturally situated, relational, and justice informed. Lin Bai's Beiliu is a homecoming narrative novel that describes the great changes in the countryside in the new era and reconsiders the relationship between urban and rural areas. Li Yuedou, an intellectual with long-term urban life experience, returned to her hometown Beiliu, observing and recording the material affluence and spiritual advancement of her friends and relatives in her hometown with the attitude of"presence". In addition to the inner spiritual structure of the dual urban/rural identity, Lin Bai builds the external structure of the text with the concrete and perceptible Beiliu dialect/Mandarin dual discourse narrative, showing the constant inner emotional connection of the villagers, and also making the Beiliu dialect full of rustic flavor come back to life. With the narrative of returning to the current countryside, Lin Bai calls on more people to return to the countryside, reconstruct the countryside, and rethink the situation and future of the countryside in the midst of dramatic changes in times.
