The ability of coyotes (Canis latrans) to exploit resources in human-dominated environments has led them to increasingly come into conflict with people, for example by killing domestic animals or attacking children. Additionally, coyotes in these environments increase their exposure to anthropogenic threats, such as harassment, vehicle mortality, and rodenticides. Effective management of human-coyote conflicts requires a better understanding of how coyotes navigate the developed landscape. As part of a broader study of how the use of urban and suburban areas affects coyotes’ exposure to rodenticides, we examined movements and space use of coyotes across gradients of urbanization in Los Angeles and Orange County, California. We affixed GPS radio-collars to 12 coyotes (nine males, three females) and tracked them between August 2022 and December 2023. Radio-collars recorded location information approximately every 15 min, but we restricted our analyses to hourly locations. We used a 95% minimum-convex polygon (MCP) and 95%-kernel density estimate (KDE) to calculate the area used by each animal. Within each utilization area, we calculated the amount of impervious cover and the relative amount of open space and development, using publicly-available GIS data layers (National Land-Cover Database; U.S. Geological Survey 2021). Additionally, for each coyote, we calculated a measure of movement tortuosity (straightness index, SI; Batschelet 1981) to describe its tendency to take directed, straight-line movements or wander less linearly in the habitat. We calculated SI for nine coyotes for which we had hourly location data during the first 28 days after radio-collar deployment. SI values were calculated separately for diurnal and nocturnal movements of each coyote, and then for movements when it was traveling in areas with low (≤19%) vs. high amounts of impervious cover (Wurth et al. 2020), and in areas classified as open space vs. areas with human development. We used paired t-tests to compare mean SI values because movements and habitat use of individual coyotes were not independent. Utilization areas of coyotes (Table 1) ranged from 0.4 - 136.1 km2 (95% MCP) and 0.4 - 148.2 km2 (95% KDE). Excluding three coyotes that displayed wide-ranging, transient movements and considering only five animals that were tracked intensively (151-313 days) during the breeding and dispersal seasons, mean utilization area (95% MCP) was 2.16 km2 (SD = 1.79), which is our best estimate of home-range size. This estimate is about half the size of that typically reported for urban coyotes elsewhere (approximately 5 km2; Gehrt 2007, Gehrt et al. 2009, Franckowiak et al. 2019), including in the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California (Riley et al. 2003). However, it is similar to the estimate (2.1 km2) of Tigas et al. (2002) for coyotes living in fragmented coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats in Los Angeles and Ventura County, where the urban landscape resembles our study area. Considering only the five non-transient coyotes that we tracked most intensively, on average, 67.2% of their home range was categorized as open space, whereas 32.8% had some level of human development (low-high intensity categories). A putative male advantage in wayfinding ability is the most widely documented sex difference in human cognition and has also been observed in other animals. The common interpretation, the sex-specific adaptation hypothesis, posits that this male advantage evolved as an adaptive response to sex differences in home range size. A previous study a decade ago tested this hypothesis by comparing sex differences in home range size and spatial ability among 11 species and found no relationship. However, the study was limited by the small sample size, the lack of species with a larger female home range and the lack of non-Western human data. The present study represents an update that addresses all of these limitations, including data from 10 more species and from human subsistence cultures. Consistent with the previous result, we found little evidence that sex differences in spatial navigation and home range size are related. We conclude that sex differences in spatial ability are more likely due to experiential factors and/or unselected biological side effects, rather than functional outcomes of natural selection.

To access seals (Pinnipedia), polar bears (Ursus maritimus) move large distances over the sea ice in winter. Already documented declines in ice duration for Hudson Bay, Canada, are predicted to continue, likely affecting polar bear movement patterns. Using data from global positioning system (GPS) collars, 2007–2011, we describe movement patterns of adult female polar bears of the Southern Hudson Bay (SH) subpopulation. We tested effects of season and reproductive class on movement rates, distance travelled, displacement distance and direction, and home range size. Except for denning females, reproductive class had no effect on movement rates, which were greatest during freeze-up and least during summer. Across all reproductive classes and seasons, mean hourly movement rate was 0.63 km/hour. Mean annual distance moved by nondenning females was 4,771 km. During freeze-up, bears moved north-easterly from the Ontario coast toward the Belcher Islands and Québec following the forming ice edge. During breakup, bears moved southerly toward the Ontario coast and away from the residual ice that occurs north of the Ontario coast. In autumn, denning females moved southerly and inland to den. Mean annual minimum convex polygon (MCP) home-range size was 153,866 km2, with no effect of reproductive class nor change over time. Home range estimates from kernel density estimators and Brownian bridge movement models (BBMM) varied by reproductive class and were smaller than MCP ones. The BBMM estimates likely yield more realistic patterns of space use by polar bears. Using data from satellite collars, 1997–2003, we compared travel distance and home range size between periods (1997–2003; 2007–2011). We found weak evidence of a difference in distance moved between periods, perhaps due to a period of ice stability in the 2000s. Our results identified patterns of use of extensive areas of Hudson Bay by SH bears in winter, and results provide benchmarks for future studies of movement patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Many invasive animals are typically active across large areas, making monitoring and control programs expensive. To be efficacious, monitoring devices and control tools need to be strategically located to maximise the probability of encounter. This requires an understanding of how the target species uses the landscape, through identifying key habitat or landscape features that are preferred and used disproportionately more frequently by the species. Spatial analysis of animal movements can help identify high use areas. Aims. The variability introduced by different range calculation methods can lead to uncertainty in subsequent habitat analyses. We aimed to determine which method is superior for accurate delineation of core areas for feral cats. Methods. We analysed spatial data from 35 collared feral cats across four Australian study sites between 2016 and 2019, and compared the core areas generated using seven commonly used home range estimation methods. Key results. We found that the a-hull method provided a higher precision of polygon placement, resulting in lower Type I and II errors and higher conformity to landscape features than other methods. The a-hull used a single default parameter and required no subjective input, making it a more objective, superior method. Conclusions. We recommend that the a-hull method be used to define core activity areas for feral cats, enabling more robust habitat analysis, and identification of key habitat and landscape features to strategically target for monitoring and control programs. Implications. This strategic approach could significantly improve cost efficiencies, particularly where existing management is widely dispersed, and core activity areas are clumped. Animal behaviour is important for prevalence and outbreaks of infectious diseases, for instance by affecting individual interactions. Increasing the knowledge of individual movement patterns can provide better insight into disease prevalence and spread, helping to target efforts to minimise disease outbreaks. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal prion disease affecting cervids. CWD is transmitted by animal‐to‐animal contact and through the environment, thus individual variation in space use and social associations may influence disease transmission patterns and infection risk. CWD was detected in Norwegian alpine reindeer Rangifer tarandus tarandus in 2016, and eradication of the infected population was implemented. A 3:1 infection rate between males and females suggests sex‐specific behavioural drivers. We utilised an extensive individual‐based dataset of 149 GPS‐marked wild reindeer to investigate individual variation in movement patterns in terms of inter‐ and intra‐annual home range size and site fidelity, and variation in home range overlap and distances between individuals. We aimed to identify patterns which could indicate higher potential disease risk. Females had larger annual and seasonal home ranges than males, except during calving and rut. Greater home range overlaps and shorter between‐individual distances were found between same‐sex individuals than different‐sex individuals, except during the rut. Accordingly, the rut season stands out with greater male home ranges, greater home range overlap and shorter distances between males and between males and females, which could indicate that this season is critical for disease transmission. Measures to prevent disease spread should lower contact rates, e.g. by reducing the abundance of adult males before they mix with other groups during the rut. This can be achieved for instance by allowing earlier hunt on adult males when they are distributed in small male groups, to reduce the transmission risk and keep disturbance of other individuals low. The spatial configuration of thermal habitats constrains the thermoregulatory performance of ectotherms. Thermal landscapes also vary through time, which is particularly relevant in seasonal environments such as temperate lakes. Indeed, elevated temperatures in the epilimnion of dimictic lakes during summer could substantially reduce the use of this habitat by cold‐stenothermic fish during the stratified period. The main objective of this study was to evaluate whether thermal habitat fragmentation in stratified lakes modulates accessibility to resources that brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, which is a mobile consumer, can track across seasons. More specifically, we hypothesize that reduced access to the littoral habitat during summer enhances foraging opportunities in this habitat during winter. We used an automatic acoustic telemetry system offering full coverage of the lake to continuously record brook charr locations across seasons, and we estimated zoobenthos abundances in the littoral habitat using image processing and semi‐automatic classification. While brook charr concentrate in the metalimnion of the pelagic habitat in summer, most individuals in winter shift to a shallow bay that is unexploited in summer due to thermal constraints. In this habitat, zoobenthos abundance is more than twice as high at the end of the summer compared to littoral habitats close to the thermal refuge in the pelagic habitat. Surprisingly, brook charr showed strong within‐lake site fidelity between two consecutive summers, which suggests that spatial memory could be a key driver of seasonal habitat use in this lacustrine population. Overall, our results suggest that thermal barriers create fragmentation between littoral and pelagic habitats that in turn produces resource opportunities that brook charr can track across seasons. Knowledge of behaviors surrounding reproduction in wild species is essential to the development of effective management and conservation strategies. Many carnivores use dens to increase the safety and survival of their neonatal young while females shift to central-place foraging to meet the energetic demands of raising young. Caracals (Caracal caracal), a medium-size wild cat, have a widespread geographic distribution but limited information from minimal observations exists on the behaviors associated with denning and caring for young. We report observations of dens used by four caracals in the surrounds of Cape Town, South Africa, including the duration of den use, maternal home ranges, and movements away from dens. Three of four females established denning in September and one in December, suggesting a birth pulse during the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer. Of seven den sites we documented, six were in dense shrubland fynbos vegetation and one among boulders; all of which had thick overhead cover. Females and neonatal young used 1–3 primary dens for approximately six weeks, followed by the use of short-term auxiliary dens. Female maternal home ranges were approximately 31% the size of their home ranges estimated using all their data. Trips away from the dens averaged 12 h while the average maximum distances across all trips away from dens for each female was 1135 m (range = 801–1327 m). Our observations inform our understanding of the timing and physical characteristics of caracal dens and help fill research gaps on the natural history of caracal denning behavior. Home range size is a fundamental trait that can affect the probability of fish being harvested and, at the same time, may be affected by fishing. The relationship between home range size and fishing will impact the effectiveness of fully protected areas (FPAs), as it will influence the number of fish moving into fished areas, affecting both spillover and edge effects. One hypothesis is that individuals within FPAs will present reduced home range size relative to individuals in fished areas. This pattern can be driven by demographic selection (e.g. fishing of individuals with large home ranges leaving the FPAs), improved habitat requiring less foraging movements, or behavioural changes associated with reduced fishing threats. To test the relationship between home range size and protection, we compiled 1143 individual‐level home range sizes based on acoustic tracking, covering 17 species from 11 FPAs in 7 countries, with information on distance from FPA borders. A dichotomic analysis (in/out of FPAs) did not support a significant change in the home range size between FPAs and fished areas. However, continuous analysis across the FPA borders demonstrated reduced home range size within the FPAs. We did not find an effect of FPA age or size on this pattern. While we cannot pinpoint the underlying mechanism for the pattern revealed, we suggest behavioural changes as the main driver for reduced home range within FPAs. This mechanism will lead to more resident populations within FPAs, reducing fishing mortality within FPAs yet limiting spillover benefits to adjacent fisheries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding how large carnivores utilize space is crucial for management planning in human-dominated landscape and enhances the accuracy of population size estimates. However, Eurasian lynx display a large inter-population variation in the size of home ranges across their European range which makes extrapolation to broader areas of a species distribution problematic. This study evaluates variations in home range size for 35 Eurasian lynx in the Western Carpathians during 2011–2022 based on GPS telemetry and explains how intrinsic and environmental factors shape lynx spatial behaviour when facing anthropogenic pressure. The average annual home range size of lynx ranged from 283 (± 42 SE) to 360 (± 60 SE) km2 for males and from 148 (± 50 SE) to 190 (± 70 SE) km2 for females, depending on home range estimator (95% MCP, KDE and AKDE). Females with kittens had smaller annual and summer home ranges compared to non-reproducing females and subadults had smaller home ranges compared to adults. Lynx home range size was explained by availability of roe deer, except for summer, when alternative prey was likely available. We also found clear evidence of human-induced changes in lynx home range size, in particular, forest cover significantly decreased the home range size of male lynx during summer while road density led to an expansion of both annual and summer lynx home ranges. Lynx exhibited consistent fidelity to their home ranges throughout consecutive seasons, showing no seasonal variations. Strong territoriality was observed among competing males maintaining relatively low home range overlaps and considerable distances between centres of activity. The most pronounced tendency for association was observed between males and females, maintaining relatively close proximity year-round. The insights into lynx spatial requirements provided by our study will greatly enhance the accuracy of population size estimates and effectiveness of mitigation measures across the Western Carpathians. Unfortunately, fundamental knowledge gaps remain that limit our ability to fully understand the development and role of plumage polymorphism in this group and extend those insights to vertebrates as a whole. We report data that fills one such knowledge gap in the red‐tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) that will enable investigations to uncover factors that influence the biogeography of plumage polymorphism in the species and raptors more generally.North America.Buteo jamaicensis (red‐tailed hawk).We captured and outfitted four dark and 22 light morphs with GPS/GSM satellite transmitters during the non‐breeding season in the Great Lakes region of North America to assess their breeding provenance and behaviours. We calculated 95% AKDE nesting home ranges during an 80‐day period meant to capture the incubation and brood‐rearing periods and compared home ranges by age and sex to contextualise movements.Our results indicate that dark types nest in eastern Canada and belong to the same breeding population as the light individuals tagged in our study, extending the known distribution of plumage polymorphism in the species approximately 1500 km eastward into eastern Canada.This revised distribution of plumage polymorphism is a critical first step for understanding the biogeography of plumage polymorphism and assessing drivers of within‐population trait diversity in this species, and predatory vertebrates more generally. Migration is an integral part of the annual cycle of many bird species that have evolved to take advantage of spatially segregated, seasonally abundant food resources while avoiding harsh winter conditions. Increasing evidence suggests that long-distance migrants are shortening their migration routes and wintering at higher latitudes closer to their breeding grounds. One potential example of this process are the observations of Egyptian vultures during the winter on the island of Crete. In this study we provide an overview of wintering Egyptian vulture occurrences on the island of Crete, seeking to shed additional light on the species’ wintering ecology. To this aim we collated extensive field observations spanning 28 winters from 1995 to 2023 and analysed telemetry data from three tracked vultures. Our results revealed a change in the wintering frequency of Egyptian vultures in the island with an increasing trend since 2015, especially regarding the presence of subadult and adult birds. We found an increased habitat use intensity for open landscapes and agricultural areas compared to other habitat types within Crete, emphasizing the influence of food availability on space utilization. We suggest that the interplay between climate changes, lack of experienced conspecifics and local food availability could have triggered the increasing number of wintering Egyptian vultures in Crete. The implications of this short-stopping behaviour extend to conservation strategies, highlighting the need for the consideration of new wintering sites and the potential threats faced by vultures during this period. We recommend the operation of supplementary feeding stations and actions to reduce the risk of electrocution to be considered as valuable conservation actions in the species’ wintering sites in Crete. Monitoring and further research are recommended to assess the long-term impact and viability of this new migration tactic, providing insights into adaptive responses to environmental change. The improvement of techniques and analyses to understand the movement of freshwater turtles has helped managers in decision-making and the establishment of management strategies for these animals, which suffer numerous threats. We analyzed the available scientific literature on the use of telemetry in the study of the movement ecology of freshwater turtles, seeking to assess the most commonly used approaches. To this end, we carried out a systematic review of articles published until December 2022 using the PRISMA protocol. We found 104 articles published between 1980 and 2022, with a clear increase in the number of publications in later years. We found publications in 40 journals with 295 authors, 150 institutions and 261 keywords. Three countries had major contributions, and we found studies with 50 species, the most recurrent being Emydoidea blandingii and Glyptemys insculpta. The most commonly used technique to study turtle movement was radiotelemetry. The use of Minimum Convex Polygon – MCP and Kernel Density Estimation – KDE was present in 56% of the studies in the last 10 years, and the evaluation of the home range of the species was the most recurrent type of study. The studies covered 33 freshwater ecoregions, and although most studies were carried out in anthropized areas, covering only 16.2% of all endangered freshwater turtle species and 11.4% of all threatened by international trade, the conservation approach has been increasingly recurrent. Our results highlight trends and gaps in the study of the ecology of freshwater turtle movements and highlight the importance of telemetry as an essential tool for species conservation. Satellite tracking allows for novel investigations into golden eagle home range characteristics. Understanding home range characteristics is important for conservation and for assessing the potential impact of landscape changes from forest planting, wind farms, etc. Small sample sizes, inconsistent definitions and methods restricted several previous studies. Our study involved 69 resident tagged eagles with over one year of data across five Scottish regions. Home range size was estimated from 95% isopleth contours extracted from Utilisation Distributions. Above a small threshold, estimated range size was not affected by the number of records but at least one year of data is required, largely because of the breeding and non-breeding seasonal differences. There were no significant range size differences between birds tagged as range holders and those previously tagged as nestlings. Across four regions, with considerable intra-regional variation, planar 95% isopleths did not differ (medians, km2): Argyll 58.9, Northwest Highlands 61.7, Northeast Highlands 89.3, South of Scotland 91.9. Ranges in the isolated Outer Hebrides region were exceptionally small, at 24.0 km2. Estimated range area was usually reduced to 70–80% of the planar area when restricted to usable habitat, as estimated by the Golden Eagle Topography (GET) model. Applying measures of known unsuitable habitat (closed-canopy commercial forest and wind turbines) further reduced usable open land. Loss of otherwise suitable habitat was substantially due to commercial forest. Larger ranges had larger extents of suitable habitat (according to GET), with no apparent optimum of preferred GET habitat. Range size was not different across a year between the sexes. Breeding ranges were smaller, and females' breeding ranges were much smaller than those of males, but larger than males' ranges in the non-breeding season. Breeding attempt duration was probably also influential. Our study provides novel insights into golden eagle home range characteristics and can guide further research and practical applications. Children's independent mobility (CIM) represents their freedom to travel in their neighborhood without adult supervision. Secular declines in CIM coincided with a major increase in mental health problems among children. We investigated relationships between two indicators of CIM and parent-perceived child distress in a national longitudinal study involving 2,291 Canadian parents of 7- to 12-year-olds at baseline (December 2020) with up to four follow-ups, every six months. We assessed mobility licenses (i.e. children's permission to do certain activities on their own) with 6 items, and home range (i.e. how far [in minutes] children can roam with friends and/or siblings) with a 4-point item. We used generalized estimating equations controlling for children's age and gender, household income, study wave, school attendance, and COVID-19 isolation in the week preceding the survey. At each successive time point, 51.8%, 44.0%, 43.2% and 42.4% of children experienced clinically elevated distress. Compared to children allowed to roam <5 min, children allowed to roam 5–15 min (OR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.67–0.88) or >15-minutes (OR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.51–0.72) had lower odds of elevated distress. Whereas they are traditionally often based on citizen science or professional sightings of (marked) animals, recent technological developments have presented GPS tracking as an alternative method for inferring space use at the population level. Tracking devices are however much more expensive than traditional marks, rings or collars, leading to datasets that typically consist of much fewer individuals. We study how GPS tracking data and citizen science resighting data of marked individuals compare as alternative sources for inferring range size.Northwestern Europe.Bewick's swan (Cygnus columbianus bewickii).We calculated Bewick's swan range sizes from a wealth of GPS tracking and resighting data during winter, the period of the year when both data types are abundant. We examined the effect of the number of individuals and the total number of spatial records (either resightings or GPS fixes) on the inferred range size. Moreover, we combined GPS tracks with resightings of the same individuals to empirically determine spatial variation in resighting rates.Tracked individuals generated records across an area 1.5–2 times larger than individuals that were merely resighted. Moreover, any given number of daily GPS records (rather than GPS‐tracked individuals) yielded an area 1.5 times larger than that same number of resighting records. A small number of GPS‐tracked individuals (~20) was sufficient to yield a larger range size compared to much higher numbers of resighted individuals (well over 400). Spatial variation in resighting rates corresponded well with the differences in range size from the two data types, indicating that spatial gaps in observer effort can hamper range estimations.When combined with resighting data, tracking data can be used to indicate areas of low observer effort. Although citizen science resightings are essential for collecting various types of biological information, we show that GPS tracking presents a highly efficient alternative to traditional marking for assessing large‐scale space use and population ranges, requiring far fewer individuals to be used. The spatial ecology of animals is influenced by the structure of their physical habitat, which affects the availability of refuges and microclimate, as well as the spatial positioning of resources. The use of space by the lizard Liolaemus tandiliensis was investigated in the Tandilia mountains of the Pampas region. We radio-tracked 19 adult lizards and found that home range size and distance moved were significantly affected by sex, with males having a home range 34% larger and moving longer distances than females. These parameters were also influenced by structural and thermal features of specific microhabitat types. The habitat structure inside the home range showed relatively high coverage of rocks and low coverage of vegetation. The thermal properties of the microhabitats were strongly associated with their occupancy; individuals used microhabitats of high thermal quality that exhibited environmental temperatures deviating the least from the preferred body temperature range of L. tandiliensis. Small-scale structural heterogeneity and thermal gradients were available in the Tandilia mountains, so L. tandiliensis individuals may not need to move large distances and may sustain themselves within a relatively small home range (mean=74.52 m2). Our findings suggest that L. tandiliensis occurs in a delicate balance with its specific habitat. This study provides information that must be taken into account for conservation planning, especially in light of the increasing anthropogenic degradation of the Tandilia mountains. Unravelling the intricate mechanisms that govern community coexistence remains a daunting challenge, particularly amidst ongoing environmental change. Individual physiology and metabolism are often studied to understand the response of individual animals to environmental change. However, this perspective is currently largely lacking in community ecology. We argue that the integration of individual metabolism into community theory can offer new insights into coexistence.We present the first individual‐based metabolic community model for a terrestrial mammal community to simulate energy dynamics and home range behaviour in different environments. Using this model, we investigate how ecologically similar species coexist and maintain their energy balance under food competition. Only if individuals of different species are able to balance their incoming and outgoing energy over the long‐term will they be able to coexist. After thoroughly testing and validating the model against real‐world patterns such as of home range dynamics and field metabolic rates, we applied it as a case study to scenarios of habitat fragmentation ‐ a widely discussed topic in biodiversity research.First, comparing single‐species simulations with community simulations, we find that the effect of habitat fragmentation on populations is strongly context‐dependent. While populations of species living alone in the landscape were mostly positively affected by fragmentation, the diversity of a community of species was highest under medium fragmentation scenarios. Under medium fragmentation, energy balance and reproductive investment were also most similar among species. We therefore suggest that similarity in energy balance among species promotes coexistence.We argue that energetics should be part of community ecology theory, as the relative energetic status and reproductive investment can reveal why and under what environmental conditions coexistence is likely to occur. As a result, landscapes can potentially be protected and designed to maximize coexistence. The metabolic community model presented here can be a promising tool to investigate other scenarios of environmental change or other species communities to further disentangle global change effects and preserve biodiversity. With the loss of substantial natural wetlands in coastal zones, artificial wetlands provide alternative habitats for many shorebirds. Scientific management of artificial wetlands used by shorebirds plays an important role in maintaining the stability of shorebird population. Satellite tracking technique can obtain high-precision location information of individuals day and night, providing a good technical support for the study of quantitative relationship between waterfowls and their habitats. In this study, satellite tracking method, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology were used to analyze the activity pattern and habitat utilization characteristics of Pied Avocet during breeding period in an artificial wetland complex in the Yellow River Delta (YRD), China. The results showed that the breeding Pied Avocets had a small range of activity, with a total core and main home range of 33.10 km2 and 216.30 km2, respectively. This species tended to forage in the pond and salt pan during the day and night, respectively, with an unfixed staying time in the breeding ground. The distance between breeding ground and feeding ground was less than 6 km. It is emphasized that in addition to improving the conditions of the remaining natural habitats, effective managing artificial habitats is a priority for shorebird conservation. This research could provide reference for the management of artificial wetlands in coastal zones and supply technique support for the protection of shorebirds and their habitats, and alleviate human-bird conflicts and sustainable development of coastal zones. As a reintroduction progresses through the establishment, growth, and regulation phases, density-dependent mechanisms increasingly drive population dynamics. This can complicate efforts to reinforce these populations if the translocated individuals (henceforth reinforcers) are excluded, or existing residents become displaced. This is especially pertinent for islands and fenced havens, where immigration is often only possible by translocation. Conspecific associations offer insights into how these density-dependent mechanisms manifest in space and time. We investigated how movement, habitat use, and conspecific associations differed between eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus) residents and reinforcers at a conservation-fenced haven. We used GPS collars to quantify distances travelled per night, home and core ranges, nocturnal (activity) and diurnal (denning) habitat use and preference, and conspecific associations over three periods: baseline (residents only, days 3–21), release (both cohorts, days 22–32), and settlement (reinforcers only, days 33–52) for ≤ 42 days post-release (depending on GPS unit longevity). Eastern quolls travelled greater mean distances per night (< 2.15 km, x̄ 1.75 km) and had larger home ranges (< 251 ha, x̄ 178 ha) during the release period. Reinforcers had larger home ranges (249 ha) and greater overlap with other collared eastern quolls (115 ha) when compared to residents (range 90 ha, overlap 46 ha). We found a significant preference for grassland habitat across all animals and periods. During the settlement period, we found a preference for nocturnal activity in greater understory and south-west facing aspects, and lower movement correlation, sociality, and den sharing between collared eastern quolls. Finally, we found lower den sharing in reinforcers (29%) compared to residents (52%), and for fawn- animals compared to dark-morphs. Our results revealed short-term movements, habitat use, and conspecific associations at a greater spatiotemporal resolution than has ever been achieved for this species. Our findings offer important insights into the importance of appropriate habitat and conspecific cueing for reintroductions, and highlight the need to monitor density-dependent mechanisms to inform adaptive management to promote positive outcomes for both initial reintroductions and reinforcements. Context: The black rat (Rattus rattus) is an invasive species found throughout much of the globe, including in many agricultural areas, where they cause significant damage to many crops including citrus. Understanding how black rats move in these orchards would substantially aid the development of management programs to combat this pest species. Aim: Our goal was to determine the home-range size and mean maximum distance moved over a 24-h period, as well as to determine the activity period for black rats in orchards. Methods: We used innovative cellular tracking technology to provide a more complete assessment of home-range size and maximum daily movements than previously reported in other investigations. We also used remote-triggered cameras to assess activity periods for black rats to better inform management actions. Key results: We observed large home ranges for black rats in citrus orchards ( x ¯ = 2.36 ha). Although mean home-range size did not differ between males and females, we did identify an effect of sex on the mean maximum daily distance moved by black rats (males: x ¯ = 201 m ; females: x ¯ = 148 m). Black rats were most active during the early evening, with all observations made during night-time. Conclusions: Black rats moved relatively large distances within orchards, with activity occurring exclusively at night. Implications: This information on black rat activity patterns will greatly assist in the development of management programs by informing ideal spacing between traps and bait stations to minimise cost, while still yielding efficacious results. A reliance on trapping or baiting during night-time would ensure access by black rats, while eliminating access to diurnal non-target species, although such actions would be labour-intensive and may be cost-prohibitive. A better understanding of activity patterns of damaging, invasive black rats would aid in the development of effective management strategies in agricultural systems. We provide information on black rat movements and activity patterns in citrus orchards on the basis of novel cellular tracking technology and remote-triggered camera data that highlight extensive nocturnal movements by black rats. This information will be used to inform distances between traps and bait stations to allow for more efficacious and cost-effective management programs in orchards. Abstract Understanding how large carnivores utilize space is crucial for management planning in human-dominated landscape and enhances the accuracy of population size estimates. However, Eurasian lynx display a large inter-population variation in the size of home ranges across their European range which makes extrapolation to broader areas of a species distribution problematic. This study evaluates variations in home range size for 35 Eurasian lynx in the Western Carpathians during 2011–2022 based on GPS telemetry and explains how intrinsic and environmental factors shape lynx spatial behaviour when facing anthropogenic pressure. The average annual home range size of lynx ranged from 283 (± 42 SE) to 360 (± 60 SE) km2 for males and from 148 (± 50 SE) to 190 (± 70 SE) km2 for females, depending on home range estimator (95% MCP, KDE and AKDE). Females with kittens had smaller annual and summer home ranges compared to non-reproducing females and subadults had smaller home ranges compared to adults. Lynx home range size was explained by availability of roe deer, except for summer, when alternative prey was likely available. We also found clear evidence of human-induced changes in lynx home range size, in particular, forest cover significantly decreased the home range size of male lynx during summer while road density led to an expansion of both annual and summer lynx home ranges. Lynx exhibited consistent fidelity to their home ranges throughout consecutive seasons, showing no seasonal variations. Strong territoriality was observed among competing males maintaining relatively low home range overlaps and considerable distances between centres of activity. The most pronounced tendency for association was observed between males and females, maintaining relatively close proximity year-round. The insights into lynx spatial requirements provided by our study will greatly enhance the accuracy of population size estimates and effectiveness of mitigation measures across the Western Carpathians.

Abstract Background Individual variation in movement strategies of foraging loggerhead turtles have been documented on the scale of tens to hundreds of kilometers within single ocean basins. Use of different strategies among individuals may reflect variations in resources, predation pressure or competition. It is less common for individual turtles to use different foraging strategies on the scale of kilometers within a single coastal bay. We used GPS tags capable of back-filling fine-scale locations to document movement patterns of loggerhead turtles in a coastal bay in Northwest Florida, U.S.A. Methods Iridium-linked GPS tags were deployed on loggerhead turtles at a neritic foraging site in Northwest Florida. After filtering telemetry data, point locations were transformed to movement lines and then merged with the original point file to define travel paths and assess travel speed. Home ranges were determined using kernel density function. Diurnal behavioral shifts were examined by examining turtle movements compared to solar time. Results Of the 11 turtles tagged, three tracked turtles remained in deep (~ 6 m) water for almost the entire tracking period, while all other turtles undertook movements from deep water locations, located along edges and channels, to shallow (~ 1–2 m) shoals at regular intervals and primarily at night. Three individuals made short-term movements into the Gulf of Mexico when water temperatures dropped, and movement speeds in the Gulf were greater than those in the bay. Turtles exhibited a novel behavior we termed drifting. Conclusions This study highlighted the value provided to fine-scale movement studies for species such as sea turtles that surface infrequently by the ability of these GPS tags to store and re-upload data. Future use of these tags at other loggerhead foraging sites, and concurrent with diving and foraging data, would provide a powerful tool to better understand fine-scale movement patterns of sea turtles.

Abstract Domestic cats (Felis catus) thrive at high densities alongside humans in urban and rural environments and are responsible for excessive wildlife predation worldwide. As urbanisation and farmland expands, and domestic cats inevitably reach previously unoccupied habitats, management plans will rely on understanding cat ranging behaviours. Cat movements and habitat selection may differ depending on their surroundings, and consequently, we sought to assess how male and female cat behaviours varied during different seasons in urban, suburban, and rural environments. In cities and farmland in the UK, the location of 56 owned cats (26 F:30 M) was recorded every 5 min for a total of 5237 h using GPS collars (454 ± 25 fixes over c. 4 days per individual). Urban and rural cats exhibited similar patterns of home ranges, maximum distances travelled from their owner’s house, and habitat selection, where they selected for built-up areas with good cover and avoided open spaces. Cats spent an average of 75% of their time outside their owners’ house or garden and therefore had great potential to encounter wild prey. Males in rural areas were almost twice as active than other males but all exhibited crepuscular activity patterns compared to cathemeral or diurnal females. In summer, cats had smaller home ranges and were more nocturnal, poentially concentrating their impacts around core areas during hotter months. Similarities in cat ranging behaviours across the urban–rural gradient suggest management plans can be equally applied in areas alongside cities as well as farmland. Buffer or exclusion zones of 750 m around protected areas would exclude 95% of cats, but specialised management, such as periodic confinement during specific active periods, could prove effective during vulnerable prey species’ breeding seasons. These findings improve our understanding of how cat ranging is affected by urbanisation under seasonal variation, and can be used to tailor management strategies as new species and populations are exposed to domestic cat predation.

The spatial use of habitat is key to understanding the ecology of animals and their area requirements. In the current study, the locations of 11 wild pale-throated three-toed sloths (Bradypus tridactylus) were tracked using GPS loggers across 92 days in a 776 ha forest fragment in the central Amazon. Although male home ranges were slightly smaller than those of females, there were no significant differences in size or its expansion patterns. For nine of 11 individuals, home range size reached a plateau within 45 days of study start, indicating that 45 days can be the basal minimum days to establish the home range size of B. tridactylus. There was a negative relationship between body mass and home range size in our study. This counterintuitive result may be caused by disparities in the food-exploring abilities between individuals. Smaller and presumably younger individuals, who have less experience, may require more time and a larger area in which to search for food, while older and more experienced individuals may be able to find food efficiently in a smaller area. Further work on the distribution of food plants and the food-exploring pattern of each animal in relation to age and/or size is thus encouraged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distribution of the resources needed by females for reproduction affects their dispersion in space and time, which in turn influences the number of females a male can defend. When males provide parental care they in turn become a resource for females, and influence where females choose to breed. Combined, these factors explain a preponderance of monogamous and (to a lesser extent) polygynous mating systems in birds. However, less frequently observed mating systems in birds remain harder to explain. Here, we analyse the home ranges of male Eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus) to investigate how their use of space facilitates an unusual polygynandrous mating system (where multiple males mate with multiple females). Female Eclectus parrots in the rainforests of northern Queensland, Australia, have limited movements. They remain at their nest trees for most of the year and rely on multiple wide-ranging males to bring them their food. We used light aircraft and VHF transmitters to track the movements of four male Eclectus parrots during the breeding season. We combined data on home range size with molecular analyses of a larger sample of breeding birds. Our analyses demonstrate that male home ranges overlap with each other and encompass multiple (3–14) trees with nesting females. We show that some males divide their time between, and gain reproductive success with, females up to 7 km apart. Our tracking and molecular data offer insights into how polygynandrous mating systems relate to space use among males and females. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overlap between spatial and physiological ecology is generally understudied, yet both fields are fundamentally related in assessing how individuals balance limited resources. Herein, we quantified the relationships between spatial ecology using two parameters of home range (annual home range area and number of burrows used in 1 yr) and four measures of physiology that integrate stress and immunity (baseline plasma corticosterone [CORT] concentration, plasma lactate concentration, heterophil-to-lymphocyte [H∶L] ratio, and bactericidal ability [BA]) in a wild free-ranging population of the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) to test the hypothesis that space usage is correlated with physiological state. We also used structural equation models (SEMs) to test for causative relationships between the spatial and physiological parameters. We predicted that larger home ranges would be negatively correlated with traditional biomarkers of stress and positively correlated with immunity, consistent with our hypothesis that home ranges are determined based on individual condition. Males had larger home ranges, used more burrows, and had higher baseline CORT than females. We found significant negative correlations between lactate and home range (r = −0.456 , df = 21 , P = 0.029). CORT was negatively correlated with the number of burrows used in both sexes (F = 7.322 , df = 2, 20 , P = 0.003 , adjusted R 2 = 0.383). No correlations were observed between space use and BA or, notably, H∶L ratio. SEMs suggested that variation in the number of burrows used was a result of variation in baseline CORT. The lack of a relationship between H∶L ratio and home range suggests that home range differences are not associated with differences in chronic stress, despite the pattern between baseline CORT and number of burrows used. Instead, this study indicates that animals balance trade-offs in energetics, likely by way of baseline corticosteroid, in such a way as to maintain function across continuously variable home range strategies. Boldness is a personality trait defined as the propensity of an animal to engage in risk-taking behaviours. Boldness is often associated with social ranking, dispersal, movement, and home range in many animal species. In this study we tested if boldness was correlated with individual spatial behaviour, in a population of the Cave Salamander Speleomantes strinatii living in a subterranean habitat. Boldness was measured in a controlled environment by means of an emerging from a shelter trial, while home ranges and distances moved over two years were obtained in the wild from a spatially explicit capture-mark-recapture study. We obtained data from 13 salamanders that were captured at least 5 times (mean 7.23; range 5-11). As expected, there was a highly significant and negative correlation between individual risk taking behaviour and home range overlap with conspecifics (rs = 0.84; p = 0.005). This pattern could be explained by differences in habitat physical quality or in its available resources, but more research is needed to better understand this behavioural pattern. Understanding the spatial requirements of exploited wildlife species, including population density and home range size, is important for wildlife management and conservation. Wolverines (Gulo gulo) are hunted and trapped across the Arctic, and are vulnerable to numerous, often interrelated, threats resulting from anthropogenic changes in their environment. Previous population density estimates for wolverines in the Arctic range tenfold, from the lowest to highest available for the species, limiting their utility outside the specific areas and times they were derived. The most recent density estimate in Arctic Alaska, USA, was produced 4 decades ago and was derived from a relatively small study area. We evaluated wolverine population density and home range size across the North Slope of Alaska during 2017–2022 using global positioning system (GPS)‐based collar data and spatial capture‐recapture models. Population density estimates were 2.0 individuals/1,000 km2 (95% credible interval = 1.3–3.5) in 2018 and 2.8 individuals/1,000 km2 (95% credible interval = 1.7–3.5) in 2021. Median home range sizes modeled with autocorrelated kernel density estimators and Ornstein‐Uhlenbeck foraging movement processes were 699 km2 (range = 158–2,895 km2) among 12 females and 2,332 km2 (range = 797–4,699 km2) among 10 males. These population density estimates are nearly 10 times lower than the previous estimate for Arctic Alaska. We recommend incorporating this information into management strategies to ensure sustainable harvest, particularly as the region's remote areas are more efficiently accessed by hunters and are being considered for transportation corridors supporting new industrial development. Knowledge of vertebrate territoriality and spatial use is a topic of great interest in the study of animal behaviour and conservation biology. Investigating the plasticity of territory boundaries, the shape of territories and how territories can be modified depending on their owners is important to deepen our knowledge of the behaviour of territorial species. We analysed the variation and tested the similarity of the distribution area of individuals from the same territory between 2015 and 2021, using data from 51 Bonelli's eagles (Aquila fasciata) from 22 different territories, tagged with GPS/GSM transmitters in eastern Spain. We calculated the percentage of overlap between the territories of the same individual in different years using the 95% kernel density estimator. We also analysed the changes in territory size and shape following the replacement of territory owners either by a single individual or by the whole pair. Our results show that territories retain the same shape and extent regardless of the occupying members, and that their boundaries change little over time. Identifying and maintaining large eagle territories, regardless of their owners, is therefore key to ensuring the long‐term recovery of these threatened species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many desert birds are vulnerable to anthropogenic global warming and landscape transformation, particularly in the case of range-restricted species. We quantified suitable habitat and the current population of Red Larks Calendulauda burra (family Alaudidae), a range-restricted southern African species, in a conservation area thought to be one of the species' strongholds — the Black Mountain Mine Conservation Area (BMMCA) in the Northern Cape, South Africa. We modelled habitat suitability and estimated home range sizes using telemetry data and kernel density estimates. Home range sizes did not differ between males (42.4 ± 28.3 ha; n = 5) and females (41.9 ± 31.3 ha; n = 5). Transect data and home range density models indicated densities of 0.086–0.127 individuals·ha-1 for adults in suitable habitat. An estimated 33.2% (30.2 km2) of the BMMCA is suitable habitat for Red Larks, suggesting a population of 232–382 individuals. This population estimate is equivalent to <50% of the population estimated for the BMMCA in 1989. Our findings here, combined with a recent analysis showing that much of the species' range will become thermally unsuitable for its persistence by the end of the 21st century, suggest that urgent conservation action is needed to ensure the Red Lark's future in coming decades. Landscape productivity and resource dispersion are key drivers of the movement patterns of many species. In less productive environments, home ranges are generally larger as individuals travel further to access resources. The greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) has been reintroduced to several feral predator exclosures to reduce their extinction risk. Understanding how landscape productivity and resource dispersion influence bilby space use is critical to enable effective management of populations in exclosures. At two exclosures, we tested three hypotheses: 1. Bilbies would preferentially utilize habitats with sandy substrates (<20% clay content), as they are suitable for digging burrows and foraging pits; 2. Home ranges would be larger at the arid site compared to the semi‐arid site due to lower productivity and patchier distribution of preferred habitats; and 3. Bilbies would travel further each night at the arid site to access preferred habitats. Rainfall was used as an indicator of productivity, and dispersion of preferred habitats as an indicator of resource dispersion. The study was undertaken during average rainfall conditions and under similar bilby population densities at both sites. GPS loggers recorded home ranges and movements of 10 bilbies at the arid site, and 11 bilbies at the semi‐arid site. Seventeen of the 21 bilbies preferentially utilized habitats with sandy substrates, which were less abundant at the arid site. There were no significant differences in home range size or nightly movements between the sites for either sex. We suggest the average rainfall conditions at both sites, and the dietary flexibility of bilbies, supported the maintenance of relatively small and stable home ranges (particularly for females). The effects of landscape productivity and resource dispersion on bilby space use are more likely to be evident during extended periods of below average rainfall. Non‐native species can affect ecosystems by influencing native predator‐prey dynamics. Therefore, management interventions designed to remove non‐natives may inadvertently lead to increased predation on native species. Feral horses are widely distributed throughout the arid parts of western North America. A growing body of research indicates that horses can be an important prey species to mountain lions in ecosystems where they overlap. In December 2020, the Bureau of Land Management removed 455 horses from the Delamar Mountains, Nevada, USA. We leveraged this management intervention to implement a before–after–control–impact study to test hypotheses about predation on horses and native ungulates. We predicted (1) that horses would comprise an important part of the diet in this mixed‐prey community, (2) following removal, the proportion of horses in the diet would decrease and native ungulates would increase, and (3) mountain lion home ranges overlapping the treatment areas would increase in response to decreased prey availability. From 2018 to 2022, we investigated 1360 clusters from 29 GPS‐collared lions and identified 1056 prey items. To model the probability of a predation event (a kill), we fit a mixed‐effects logistic regression model for ungulate prey as a function of lion sex, treatment area (in/out), and treatment period (pre‐/post‐removal). We used a log‐linear regression model to evaluate changes in home range size. The most common prey were mule deer (55%), feral horses (32%), and coyotes (4%). Twenty‐two of 29 lions consumed horses, although the rate of horse consumption was highly variable across individuals. Horses of both sexes and all age classes were predated. In contrast to predictions, our models detected no effect of removals on diet composition (βinteraction = 0.30 ± 1.1), nor did the removal influence home range size (βinteraction = 0.02 ± 0.02). Despite a 46% reduction in horse abundance, we found no evidence for prey‐switching following the horse removal treatment. Removal magnitude, rapid horse immigration, and/or behavioral specialization of individual mountain lions may help explain these results. Our findings have important implications for mountain lion and feral horse management in arid environments characterized by high prey diversity, but low prey abundance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Use of a small tropical nursery in the Los Roques Archipelago by lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) was investigated using acoustic telemetry. Twelve juvenile lemon sharks of three size classes were tracked between February 2014 and August 2015 in the Sebastopol Lagoon. Sharks were strongly site attached and remained in the lagoon for the duration of the study. Individuals in the smallest size class exhibited restricted movements within the innermost area of the lagoon in shallow water (< 1 m), over muddy substrate and along mangrove-lined shores. Sharks in the two larger size classes ranged further, in deeper water, over a wider range of substrates and more frequently near the lagoon entrance. Activity space varied among size classes, with home range (95% kernel utilization densities–KUD) of 0.42 km2 and core area (50% KUD) of 0.13 km2 for individuals in the smallest size class. For the medium and large size classes home ranges were 1.11 and 1.15 km2 and core areas were 0.33 and 0.35 km2 respectively. Space use as Minimum Convex Polygons differed among size classes, with overlap between the two largest size classes of 89%, compared with 40% between medium and smallest and 43% for largest and smallest size classes. Space use of lemon sharks in the Los Roques nursery illustrates variable use of habitat with varying environmental characteristics, likely reflecting a balance between predator avoidance and prey acquisition. Greater understanding of the use of nursery habitats for species such as lemon sharks, which use small, discrete nurseries over a broad geographical range can enhance our understanding of relationships between life history traits and environmental variability and management of populations. The long‐term conservation of species at risk relies on numerous, and often concurrent, management actions to support their recovery. Generally, these actions are habitat‐based while others are focused on a species' position within its ecological community. Less studied are the impacts from human presence, despite evidence that human activity may reduce the area functionally available for occupancy or resource acquisition. In the winter of 2020/2021, COVID‐19‐related travel restrictions led to a reduction in helicopter‐assisted back‐country skiing (heli‐skiing). We examined how these reductions in heli‐skiing (termed the anthropause) affected the movement ecology and resource selection of southern mountain caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) as compared to two prior years (2018/2019 and 2019/2020) and the following year when heli‐skiing resumed (2021/2022). We found that home‐range size was on average 80–120% larger during the anthropause than in years of normal heli‐ski operations. Movement rates also varied among periods, with movement during the anthropause (11.9 km2/day) being higher than in 2019/2020 (7.8 km2/day) and 2021/2022 (8.7 km2/day), though similar to 2018/2019 (12.2 km2/day). Resource selection among periods did not differ, with caribou consistently selecting old forests, high elevations and gentle terrain. These results suggest that back‐country recreation, specifically heli‐skiing, may be limiting access to resources for southern mountain caribou. This limitation arises through reduced home‐range size within suitable late‐winter habitat, relative to when heli‐skiing is reduced or not occurring – consistent with Encounter Theory. While the demographic effects of reduced home‐range size and movement were not examined here, reduced access to resources likely compounds other stressors known to affect population viability of caribou. The results of this study demonstrate the impact that recreation can have on wildlife and highlight the need to consider heli‐skiing and other forms of recreation when developing recovery plans. Methods: Iridium-linked GPS tags were deployed on loggerhead turtles at a neritic foraging site in Northwest Florida. After filtering telemetry data, point locations were transformed to movement lines and then merged with the original point file to define travel paths and assess travel speed. Home ranges were determined using kernel density function. Diurnal behavioral shifts were examined by examining turtle movements compared to solar time. Results: Of the 11 turtles tagged, three tracked turtles remained in deep (~ 6 m) water for almost the entire tracking period, while all other turtles undertook movements from deep water locations, located along edges and channels, to shallow (~ 1–2 m) shoals at regular intervals and primarily at night. Three individuals made short-term movements into the Gulf of Mexico when water temperatures dropped, and movement speeds in the Gulf were greater than those in the bay. Turtles exhibited a novel behavior we termed drifting. Conclusions: This study highlighted the value provided to fine-scale movement studies for species such as sea turtles that surface infrequently by the ability of these GPS tags to store and re-upload data. Future use of these tags at other loggerhead foraging sites, and concurrent with diving and foraging data, would provide a powerful tool to better understand fine-scale movement patterns of sea turtles. Domestic cats (Felis catus) thrive at high densities alongside humans in urban and rural environments and are responsible for excessive wildlife predation worldwide. As urbanisation and farmland expands, and domestic cats inevitably reach previously unoccupied habitats, management plans will rely on understanding cat ranging behaviours. Cat movements and habitat selection may differ depending on their surroundings, and consequently, we sought to assess how male and female cat behaviours varied during different seasons in urban, suburban, and rural environments. In cities and farmland in the UK, the location of 56 owned cats (26 F:30 M) was recorded every 5 min for a total of 5237 h using GPS collars (454 ± 25 fixes over c. 4 days per individual). Urban and rural cats exhibited similar patterns of home ranges, maximum distances travelled from their owner's house, and habitat selection, where they selected for built-up areas with good cover and avoided open spaces. Cats spent an average of 75% of their time outside their owners' house or garden and therefore had great potential to encounter wild prey. Males in rural areas were almost twice as active than other males but all exhibited crepuscular activity patterns compared to cathemeral or diurnal females. In summer, cats had smaller home ranges and were more nocturnal, poentially concentrating their impacts around core areas during hotter months. Similarities in cat ranging behaviours across the urban–rural gradient suggest management plans can be equally applied in areas alongside cities as well as farmland. Buffer or exclusion zones of 750 m around protected areas would exclude 95% of cats, but specialised management, such as periodic confinement during specific active periods, could prove effective during vulnerable prey species' breeding seasons. These findings improve our understanding of how cat ranging is affected by urbanisation under seasonal variation, and can be used to tailor management strategies as new species and populations are exposed to domestic cat predation. When selecting a nest site, mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) balance differing habitat requirements for the nesting and brood‐rearing periods, such that the juxtaposition of these habitats in the landscape may influence the female's reproductive strategy and reproductive success. Mallard populations in the northeastern United States have declined since the mid‐1990s, and increasing urban development in this region may pose risks to broods and cause high duckling mortality. We assessed mallard brood and duckling survival in the urbanized landscapes of Connecticut, USA, and evaluated whether differences in brood movements, home ranges, and habitat use in urbanized areas influence brood survival. We monitored 32 mallard broods from females with global positioning system (GPS) transmitters in Connecticut in 2021 and 2022. Apparent brood survival to 30 days (0.48, n = 29 broods) was comparable to previous estimates in the Northeast (range = 0.21–0.72), but individual duckling survival (0.18, n = 257 ducklings) was lower than many previous estimates for this region (range = 0.14–0.44), suggesting this parameter warrants continued evaluation because it may be contributing to population declines in Connecticut and the greater Northeast region. Mallard females demonstrated different reproductive strategies and seemed to prioritize either high‐quality nesting habitat or proximity to high‐quality brood‐rearing habitat. High‐quality nesting habitat is not necessarily near high‐quality brood‐rearing habitat, and 61% (17/28) of females moved their ducklings an average of 1.1 ± 0.9 km (SD) shortly after hatch to a brood‐rearing site, often traveling along small streams. A similar proportion of successful (9/12) and failed (7/13) broods moved. We provide evidence of limited availability of brood‐rearing habitat, as females moved long distances to brood‐rearing wetlands and only 1 brood made additional inter‐wetland moves. Management actions that create or modify nesting and brood‐rearing habitat should consider connectivity between these sites; females may choose to nest away from wetlands to minimize exposure to predators but may depend on small streams for travel to brood‐rearing wetlands. Bird migration in the Neotropics is complex and highly diverse. Indeed, for many taxa, basic questions such as where they go are still relevant. Satellite-tracking studies of Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) migration have revealed extensive variability in their movement strategies, contributing to their widespread distribution. However, South American migratory populations are still among the least explored. By integrating five years of satellite-tracking data, citizen science databases and classical raptor monitoring techniques, we present a case study reporting a hitherto unknown nonbreeding area for the Turkey Vulture subspecies ruficollis. Specifically, we document that a minor proportion of the population that breeds in northwestern Argentine Patagonia migrates northwards to central Chile at the beginning of the austral autumn. Our findings improve our basic knowledge of the Turkey Vulture migration within the Neotropics and establish a baseline to study the movement strategies of the migratory ruficollis populations breeding in high latitudes of South America. Recent proliferation of GPS technology has transformed animal movement research. Yet, time‐series data from this recent technology rarely span beyond a decade, constraining longitudinal research. Long‐term field sites hold valuable historic animal location records, including hand‐drawn maps and semantic descriptions. Here, we introduce a generalised workflow for converting such records into reliable location data to estimate home ranges, using 30 years of sleep‐site data from 11 white‐faced capuchin (Cebus imitator) groups in Costa Rica. Our findings illustrate that historic sleep locations can reliably recover home range size and geometry. We showcase the opportunity our approach presents to resolve open questions that can only be addressed with very long‐term data, examining how home ranges are affected by climate cycles and demographic change. We urge researchers to translate historical records into usable movement data before this knowledge is lost; it is essential to understanding how animals are responding to our changing world. Individual‐level differences in animal spatial behavior can lead to differential exposure to risk. We assessed the risk‐exposure of a reintroduced population of kākā (Nestor meridionalis) in a fenced reserve in New Zealand by GPS tracking 10 individuals and comparing the proportion of each individual's home range beyond the reserve's fence in relation to age, sex, and fledging origin. To estimate dynamic space use, we used a sweeping window framework to estimate occurrence distributions (ODs) from temporally overlapping snapshots. For each OD, we calculated the proportion outside the reserve's fence to assess temporal risk exposure, and the area, centroid, and overlap to represent the behavioral pattern of space use. Home range area declined significantly and consistently with age, and the space use of juvenile kākā was more dynamic, particularly in relation to locational changes of space use. The wider‐ranging and more dynamic behavior of younger kākā resulted in more time spent outside the reserve, which aligned with a higher number of incidental mortality observations. Quantifying both home range and dynamic space use is an effective approach to assess risk exposure, which can provide guidance for management interventions. Context: In a conservation context, identifying key habitats suitable for reproduction, foraging, or survival is a useful tool, yet challenging for species with large geographic distributions and/or living in remote regions. Objectives: The objective of this study is to identify selected habitats at multiple levels and scales of the threatened eastern North American population of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos). We studied habitat selection at three levels: landscape (second order of selection), foraging (third order of selection), and nesting (fourth order of selection). Methods: Using tracking data from 30 adults and 366 nest coordinates spanning over a 1.5 million km2 area in remote boreal and Arctic regions, we modelled the three levels of habitat selection with resource selection functions using seven environmental features (aerial, topographical, and land cover). We then calculated the relative probability of selection in the study area to identify regions with higher probabilities of selection. Results: Eagles selected more for terrain ruggedness index and relative elevation than land cover (i.e., forest cover, distance to water; mean difference in relative selection strength: 1.2 [0.71; 1.69], 95% CI) at all three levels. We also found that the relative probability of selection at all three levels was ~ 25% higher in the Arctic than in the boreal regions. Eagles breeding in the Arctic travelled shorter foraging distances with greater access to habitat with a high probability of selection than boreal eagles. Conclusion: Here we found which aerial and topographical features were important for several of the eagles' life cycle needs. We also identified important areas to monitor and preserve this threatened population. Context: GPS tags have revolutionised the field of wildlife spatial ecology by providing a large number of animal location datapoints at a very fine spatial scale. Although GPS tags have been used on large animals for several decades, it is only recently that technological advances have allowed lightweight GPS tags to be deployed on small animals with limited travel distances. Importantly, factors such as canopy cover, topography, and tag orientation can affect the ability of GPS tags to obtain satellite fixes, which can subsequently affect the accuracy of recorded locations. Aims: If not corrected for, biases in location data obtained from GPS tags could lead to erroneous inferences regarding animals' habitat use, home-range sizes, and movement paths, which could reduce the effectiveness of conservation efforts based on such inferences. Methods: Here, we used a double-sampling method (i.e. GPS tags and ground-truthing with radio-telemetry) and quantified the effects of habitat characteristics and data screening on the accuracy of location data obtained from GPS tags deployed both in stationary tests and on wild eastern box turtles and spotted turtles, which co-occur at our study sites but use different habitat types. Key results: We found that canopy cover reduced both the number and accuracy of locations obtained from GPS tags, that dense ground vegetation decreased the fix success rate of GPS tags, and that GPS tags were ineffective when submerged underwater. We further showed that using a simple method to screen data and exclude low-accuracy locations is essential if locations obtained from GPS tags are used to make inferences about a species' habitat use or spatial ecology. Conclusions: Screening data to reduce location error is particularly important for animals with small home-range sizes and short travel distances because a small number of erroneous locations can introduce substantial bias in inferences regarding a species' space use. Implications: We encourage researchers to report measures of error (i.e. location error, horizontal dilution of precision, number of satellites received) for GPS location data and to employ data-screening methods to exclude low-accuracy locations and improve the reliability of published animal location data, and the inference drawn there from. GPS tags are used to study animal spatial ecology because they can remotely obtain huge numbers of locations without disturbance to animals. We assessed how variation in accuracy of locations from GPS tags affected estimated home-range sizes and inferred macrohabitat use in co-occurring turtles. The study of animal space use is fundamental to effective conservation and management of wildlife populations and habitats in a rapidly changing world, yet many species remain poorly described. Such is the case for the spatial ecology of the Vicuña-a medium-sized wild camelid that plays a critical role, both as a consumer and as prey, in the high Andean food web. We studied patterns of space use of 24 adult female vicuñas from April 2014 to February 2017 at the southern edge of its range. Vicuñas showed strong fidelity to their home range locations across the study period and shared large portions of their home ranges with vicuñas from other family groups. Vicuña home ranges in our study were considerably larger than previous estimates across the range of the species. Variation in environmental and terrain factors and the associated risk of predation affected vicuña diel migration distance but not home range size or overlap. Our study offers new ecological insights into vicuña space use that can inform conservation and management efforts of vicuñas and other social ungulates.

The home range utilization of primates reflects their behavioral and ecological strategies to adapt to their environment. However, little is known about the home range behavior of endemic gibbons (Nomascus hainanus) found in a secondary tropical forest of Hainan Island, China. Knowledge of their ranging patterns could contribute to scientific evaluations of the survival risk of this species under habitat conversion. In this study, we analyzed the home range utilization patterns and the seasonal variation of a group of Hainan gibbons in secondary tropical forests in the Bawangling area of National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest, using infrared cameras and direct observations. The results show that the annual home area of the gibbon group was 137.4 ha, with no significant difference between the wet and dry seasons. The feeding hotspots of Hainan gibbons are more scattered in the rainy season and more concentrated in the dry season, but not for sleeping hotspots. The relatively small home range suggests that secondary forests may not represent low-quality habitats and thus have a supporting role for the Hainan gibbon population. The widely distributed range of feeding hotspots in the rainy season may be related to the abundance of fruit resources in this season, while gibbons reduce their travel distance and energy expenditure when food is scarce in the dry season. Overall, our findings provide insights into the ecological flexibility of gibbons to seasonal variations in food resources and highlight the conservation value of secondary forests for gibbon populations.

Parrotfishes (family Scaridae) are important to coral reef ecosystems and highly prized by both commercial and recreational fishers in the Hawaiian Islands. Although parrotfishes are known to be strictly diurnal, our knowledge of their habitat use and movement patterns across daily timescales in tropical systems is still somewhat limited. Here, acoustic telemetry was used to determine parrotfish habitat use and movements within a coral reef seascape at Puakō, Hawai‘i. An array of acoustic receivers was deployed in a nearshore reef to track fine-scale movements of two common species: ember parrotfish (Scarus rubroviolaceus) and palenose parrotfish (Scarus psittacus). Transmitters were mounted externally on fish and tracked over a four-week period using an acoustic positioning system. Coral habitats (reef flat, fore reef) within the study area were mapped and used in conjunction with triangulated positions to characterize habitat use and movements. Findings indicated that both species commonly inhabited the fore reef habitat during the day (91.6% and 95.0% of total detections, respectively), spending limited time in the reef flat during the day and no time in this habitat at night. Activity spaces (based on 95% and 50% kernel utilization distributions) indicated that home ranges and core use of both species were significantly larger during the day than night, with daytime home ranges (mean ±1 SD) significantly greater for ember parrotfish (8,712 ± 1,991 m2) than palenose parrotfish (3,725 ± 1,254 m2). Hourly mean detections peaked during crepuscular periods for palenose parrotfish and to a lesser extent for ember parrotfish, which was linked to movements between shallower daytime (foraging) and nighttime (resting) areas. Kernel utilization distributions indicated that both species occupied similar core use areas of the seascape (overlap index > 0.5), with both intra- and interspecific overlapping distributions present. Finding from this study highlight the value of the fore reef habitat for both daytime foraging and nocturnal resting activities of ember parrotfish and palenose parrotfish. This study also affords valuable information on primary activity spaces of both species as well as overlap between these two common congeners, which is essential for developing management strategies to conserve parrotfish populations.

Abstract Background Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a zoonotic parasitic disease of economic and public health importance worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean area. Canids are the main definitive hosts of the adult cestode contaminating the environment with parasite eggs released with feces. In rural and peri-urban areas, the risk of transmission to livestock as well as humans is high because of the free-roaming behavior of owned/not owned dogs. Collecting data on animal movements and behavior using GPS dataloggers could be a milestone to contain the spread of this parasitosis. Thus, this study aims to develop a comprehensive control strategy, focused on deworming a dog population in a pilot area of southern Italy (Campania region) highly endemic for CE. Methods Accordingly, five sheep farms, tested to be positive for CE, were selected. In each sheep farm, all shepherd dogs present were treated every 2 months with praziquantel. Furthermore, 15 GPS dataloggers were applied to sheep and dogs, and their movements were tracked for 1 month; the distances that they traveled and their respective home ranges were determined using minimum convex polygon (MCP) analysis with a convex hull geometry as output. Results The results showed that the mean daily walking distances traveled by sheep and dogs did not significantly differ. Over 90% of the point locations collected by GPS fell within 1500 mt of the farm, and the longest distances were traveled between 10:00 and 17:00. In all the sheep farms monitored, the area traversed by the animals during their daily activities showed an extension of < 250 hectares. Based on the home range of the animals, the area with the highest risk of access from canids (minimum safe convex polygon) was estimated around the centroid of each farm, and a potential scheme for the delivery of praziquantel-laced baits for the treatment of not owned dogs gravitating around the grazing area was designed. Conclusions This study documents the usefulness of geospatial technology in supporting parasite control strategies to reduce disease transmission. Graphical Abstract
