Background: History and health humanities instruction offers a framework for professional students to examine the arc and development of their profession as well as develop cultural competencies. Exploring ideas, themes, and health care practices and approaches through historical instruction can show students how culture influences health care and practice, therefore providing a context for further development of cultural competence skills. Case Presentation: This case report describes a collaboration among a dentistry course instructor, a liaison librarian, and curators of a rare book collection. Working together, this team offers an active learning class that examines the historical arc of the dental profession. We aim to have students use primary source materials to examine the experiences, research, and narratives of their profession. Discussion: Using a World Cafe with thematic tables allows students to safely examine rare materials and artifacts and have meaningful conversations about themes that are critical to dentistry's past, present, and future. Students reported that engaging with artifacts and historical materials provided a different way to understand history and enhanced their learning experience. Engaging students in this work builds critical thinking skills that are essential to evidence-based practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On August 25, 1879, nineteen-year-old Eliza Francis Levesay, the daughter of a tenant farmer, and twenty-five-year-old William Miers, the son of a prosperous landowner and farmer, traveled from rural Decatur County, Indiana, to the county seat of Greensburg. Eliza was pregnant, and local dentist Columbus C. Burns performed an abortion on the young woman. Eliza miscarried the pregnancy in her parents' home days later, and Miers and Burns were charged by the Decatur County Court with procuring an abortion and second-degree murder. The trial garnered local, regional, and national attention. Using long-unknown court documents—including Eliza's deposition, taken by the mayor of Greensburg—author Madeleine Boesche recounts a story of premarital sex and out-of-wedlock pregnancy, community standards and secrets, social class, and the practice of abortion in the nineteenth-century rural Midwest. During World War II, millions of people were mistreated and imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. Due to the antisemitic pressure applied by the Nazi regime, many scientists had to leave Germany, and they immigrated to the United States, Switzerland, Turkey or South America. Alfred Kantorowicz was among those highly educated people who were forced out of their professional career. For a certain period, he had to stay away from the world of research and academia, which were his favorite occupations. However, these unexpected difficulties did not prevent him to pursue his success story with many awards, books, and scientific studies. Professor Kantorowicz was saved from a concentration camp upon the efforts of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to modernize the university education system in Turkey. Prof. Kantorowicz worked from 1933 until his retirement in 1948 and acted as the "father of dentistry" in Turkey. His vision of preventive dentistry and his entrepreneurial approach should set an example for today's young dentists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the inclusion of pediatric dentistry in the curricular matrix of dental courses in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Material and Methods: A descriptive exploratory study was conducted. Searches were conducted from the e-MEC systems in December of 2023. The variables of interest were the categorization of the course (public or private), total course load, structuring of the teaching of pediatric dentistry (curricular, elective/optative or extension), course load of pediatric dentistry, number of semesters and nomenclature. Results: There are 28 dental courses in the state (three public and 25 private). Total course load ranged from 4,000 to 4,700 hours and 80% of the courses had ten semesters. Pediatric dentistry is curricular and normally available between the seventh and ninth semesters, with a total hourly load between 120 and 420 hours, generally in two consecutive semesters. Conclusion: The state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, underwent an exponential expansion of dental courses, especially in the form of private schools. The courses follow the national curricular guidelines (NCGs), and pediatric dentistry is a curricular discipline normally offered in the last semesters of the course. Considerable divergence, however, was found in the course load for pediatric dentistry. There is an evident need for the definition of theoretical content and minimum clinical training to enable students to develop skills for treating children.

ELECTROMYOGRAPHY , *MASTICATORY muscles , *DENTISTRY , *STOMATOGNATHIC system , *ELECTRIC impedance - Abstract
Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a technique for measuring and analyzing the electrical signals of muscle activity using electrodes placed on the skin's surface. The aim of this paper was to outline the history of the development and use of surface electromyography in dentistry, to show where research and technical solutions relating to surface electromyography currently lie, and to make recommendations for further research. sEMG is a diagnostic technique that has found significant application in dentistry. The historical section discusses the evolution of sEMG methods and equipment, highlighting how technological advances have influenced the accuracy and applicability of this method in dentistry. The need for standardization of musculoskeletal testing methodology is highlighted and the needed increased technical capabilities of sEMG equipment and the ability to specify parameters (e.g., sampling rates, bandwidth). A higher sampling rate (the recommended may be 2000 Hz or higher in masticatory muscles) allows more accurate recording of changes in the signal, which is essential for accurate analysis of muscle function. Bandwidth is one of the key parameters in sEMG research. Bandwidth determines the range of frequencies effectively recorded by the sEMG system (the recommended frequency limits are usually between 20 Hz and 500 Hz in masticatory muscles). In addition, the increased technical capabilities of sEMG equipment and the ability to specify electromyographic parameters demonstrate the need for a detailed description of selected parameters in the methodological section. This is necessary to maintain the reproducibility of sEMG testing. More high-quality clinical trials are needed in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TOOTH abrasion ,BONE resorption ,OPERATIVE dentistry ,TOOTHACHE ,DENTAL care ,TOOTH loss - Abstract
The brilliant ancient Egyptian civilization left behind important evidence for scholars to study. A lot of hieroglyphic inscriptions, many texts on papyri and a plethora of archaeological findings are available. Observations of skeletal findings show that the ancient Egyptians suffered from extensive tooth abrasion, a consequence of their diet, leading to abscesses and periapical lesions, bone loss of the alveolar crest, enamel hypoplasia, etc., while the incidence rates of caries was low. Despite the serious dental problems, there is no evidence for operative dentistry. References in medical texts, address dental issues by pharmaceutical prescriptions only. Out of the large number of recipes presented in the lengthy Ebers Papyrus, three sections are of dental interest: treatment of abscesses, tongue and painful teeth. The Edwin Smith Papyrus impressively describes the techniques for the treatment of a fractured mandible and another for its dislocation. However, there is no mention of tooth extraction. According to the inscriptions, there appears to be dentists with a prominent social status, but in limited number. Also, no functional prosthetic restorations have been found, but only post-mortem rehabilitative constructions. To all these, one should add, an element of fiction or supernature, since the Egyptians also believed in the myth of the worm that eats the tooth, as the cause of dental pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1911, the School of Dentistry was founded, as a branch of the Medical School of Athens with the enactment of the Law ΓΩΚΓ΄ (Government Gazette Issue 178/12-7-1911) On the Organization of the National University. The following year, the first Program of Studies was prepared by Konstantinos Savvas, Professor of the Medical School of the National University and approved by the Board of Professors of the Medical School of Athens in May 1912. Due to Greece's participation in the Balkan Wars, the first Program of Studies became a Law of the Greek State in September 1916. It was applied for five years but in the meantime, it was revised because of the heavy load of medical courses for the Dental School students. Despite any particular weaknesses, it managed to educate the first generation of dentists, among whom are important university figures, such as Kosmas Aravantinos (1919) Professor of Dental Surgery, Pathology and Therapeutics and Konstantinos Adam Professor of Dental Prosthetics (1921), who demonstrated significant educational and dental work. The pathological lesions of the oral cavity were the subject of extensive study by a plethora of important physicians of the ancient world, starting with Hippocrates and the texts of the Hippocratic Collection. Although the observations and descriptions of the lesions lack their modern counterparts, they nevertheless include a wide range of different diseases and a surprisingly large collection of medications for their treatment. Stomatological diseases such as inflammation of the gums, floor of the mouth and jaws are recognized. The study by a number of important physicians of ulcerations of the oral cavity, as well as other pathological lesions, the most important of which is aphthae, is also systematic. Therapies are proposed that try to approach the cure of diseases with purely rationalistic-scientific approach and free from any theurgical element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DENTAL pulp ,HISTORY of medicine ,TOOTH abrasion ,HEALING ,ORAL diseases ,TOOTHACHE - Abstract
The oldest written sources on medicine in human history of mankind come from the region of Mesopotamia. Information about dentistry of the era is available in many of the thousands of clay tablets with cuneiform texts. Mesopotamians suffered from similar diseases to those that prevail today. The study of skeletal remains revealed extensive tooth abrasion in 95%, periodontal lesions in 42% and caries in 2%, while many cases of congenital abnormalities and neoplastic lesions were observed. The dentition had modern morphological characteristics but dental health was relatively poor. Findings from the bones and teeth indicate that the population suffered from health problems and nutritional deficiency. The peoples of Mesopotamia were deeply religious, so the theurgic and magical elements had a predominant role in the healings they sought. The myth of the tooth worm, that is associated with caries, was first described in cuneiform tablets. They were aware of the unbearable pain caused by an inflamed pulp or a dental abscess. In the attempt to control pain, toothache and other oral diseases they applied of various medication therapies, establishing eventually a form of Materia Medica. Over the years the emphasis shifts from magical to empirical healing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dental aesthetics is a topic of wide relevance in current dentistry, both in dental education and in private practice. When people express that they want a beautiful smile, both dentists and patients think of whitening tooth color. What is the reason for this tacit agreement? Some might argue that a healthy smile is naturally whiter, but we know that physiological functionality is not always associated with socially determined aesthetics. Furthermore, some aesthetics procedures might involve body modifications that are not necessarily natural nor healthy. The aim of this review is to to provide elements of discussion about historical and cultural aspects related to the positioning of tooth color as an important part of an aesthetic ideal. To argue that the desire for whiter teeth resides in cultural influences. To invite reflection if "white teeth" should be equated with "healthy teeth", with the consequences this assumption would imply in our professional field.

Throughout history, Osijek and Slavonia were parts of numerous empires and states. In this paper, the authors depict dental health care of the inhabitants of Osijek and Slavonia throughout their history, since the ancient prehistoric times when dental medicine and medicine in general were ‘in the hands’ of gods and medicine men, throughout the period of the Roman Empire and Middle Ages, as well as the Turkish sovereignty, all the way to the modern era when Osijek and Slavonia became part of the Austrian Empire and many novelties were introduced in the society, among other things, and for those times, modern procedures of medicine and dental protection. Those were the true beginnings of medicine and dental protection. The authors illustrate the work of various ‘dentists’ who worked in Osijek, from military and town surgeons, barbers, and especially the work of doctors that needed to have formal school and specialist education after the reforms implemented in the 19th century. Thanks to the reforms of the Austrian, and later the Austrian-Hungarian authorities, the practice and work of people who were allowed to perform dental procedures started being regulated, prices were established, and punishments introduced for those who performed dental procedures without having the proper qualifications.

- Abstract
There are many women who have contributed to the development of Stomatology in Cuba. In Cienfuegos, one of the most prominent in this field is Dr. Mercedes Verónica Diego Cobelo, a personality that this article intends to address through the description of the significant events of her life and work, going through her career in the student, labor and political fields. A historical research was carried out, from October to December 2016. As a way of reviewing the history, her memories were used; as well as the analytic-synthetic and deductive-inductive methods. Historical research techniques were used: documentary review; and in-depth oral interviews with testimony from Mercedes herself, as the primary source for obtaining the information. She is considered the initiator of stomatology and medical education in Cienfuegos province since 1970, by participating in the inauguration of the stomatology services of all its municipalities, in addition to being elected provincial president of the Cuban Society of Public Health. The study evidences the transcendence of her work in the establishment of stomatological services in Cienfuegos, her dedication to teaching from her student stage, and the integral link to the revolutionary work in all areas. Medical and dental histories, clinical examination, study models, and photographs provide the data for a proper diagnosis and the treatment plan for esthetic dentistry. However, they do not offer all the information necessary to analyze the smile and create harmony with the lips and face without excessive intraoral adjustments. Dentolabial parameters vary according to lip dynamics and are influenced by both a static posed smile and a smile in motion as captured in video. This article describes a documentation protocol using smartphone videos to improve the analysis, smile design decisions, and elaboration of a 2D smile frame that will guide the 3D digital smile design project. The use of dynamic documentation of the smile (DDS) allows esthetic rehabilitative planning from a facial perspective, improvement of communication with the patient, integration between the specialists, and the predictable quality of the treatments. - Abstract
Many events and personalities have been part of the Stomatology historical evolution in Cienfuegos. This article aims to describe the significant events in life and work of René Laurentino Miní Rodríguez Cobre and Carlos Manuel Miní Llorens doctors. A historical research was carried out, using techniques such as documentary review and in-depth oral interviews, with testimonies from key informants as the primary source for obtaining information. Historical legal documents were also consulted. René Miní, once graduated in the United States, returned to his native Lajas to practice there as the first official dentist. Said legacy was assumed by his son, follower of his father's work, graduated from the Havana University. They remained in Cuba until 1972, when the whole family emigrated to Spain. The study of the life and work of these Stomatology professionals allowed knowing and patenting historical data about the beginnings of this in Cienfuegos, especially in Lajas. Both made available to the population the most advanced in this branch of science at the beginning of the 20th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: the name of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (Purkinje in German), born in Bohemia in 1787 and died in Prague in 1869, is mainly associated with discoveries in histology and specialist fields of Medicine like embriology, histological techniques, ophthalmology, cardiology and neurophysiology. This short article presents a brief account of his life, commemorates his achievements in biology and medicine but also in in the politics and literature of his Country (he was elected to the Diet of Bohemia but also he composed poems and important translations from German, French and Italian languages into Czech) and examines in depth his contribution to Dentistry. Materials and Methods: Purkyně’s major contributions to Dentistry, which focused on embryology and dental histology, endodontics and periodontology, are traced to two dissertations in Latin which were discussed by his pupils (Meyer Fraenkel and Isaac Raschkow), at Breslau University in 1835: we present a brief summary of each, with the major innovative findings highlighted. Results: the two dissertations contain remarkable, though often overlooked, contributions to Dentistry. Among these we can indicate the individuation of: the dental cement (substantia ostoidea), the acquired dental pellicle, the nature of optical illusion of Hunter-Schreger lines, the “enamel pulp” from which the enamel would evolve, the sub-odontoblastic nervous plexus which is the cause of tooth sensitivity, the predentine, the organic nature of the process of enamel formation, the dentine and enamel formation in opposing directions, the presence of alveolus membrane (id est: the periodontium). Conclusions: after reviewing the main innovations these two dissertations made to Dentistry, Purkyně’s personal share in both is very clear. Both the two his pupils acknowledged their debt to Purkyně and also famous contemporary Purkinje scientists such as Alexander Nasmyth, Sir Richard Owen, Sir James Paget had no doubt he is had generated the ideas expressed in the two little treatises.

Before the nineteenth century, there was little dentistry for anyone, let alone children. By the middle of that century, people such as William Macpherson Fisher and Sidney Spokes began to make a difference. Fisher campaigned for children's dental services. Spokes realised the need for similar-minded dentists to congregate, so formed the School Dentists' Society. Both led to vast improvements in dental care for children and conditions of working for school dentists., (© 2024. The Author(s), under exclusive licence to the British Dental Association.)

- Abstract
Pierre Fauchard, widely referred to as the "Father of Modern Dentistry," fundamentally transformed the field with his seminal 1728 publication, Le Chirurgien Dentiste, ou Traité des Dents. Born circa 1677 in Brittany, France, Fauchard's early exposure to severe dental conditions during his naval service catalyzed his pursuit of advancements in dental science. Upon transitioning from naval service to establish a practice in Angers, and subsequently gaining acclaim in Paris, Fauchard systematically documented and organized dental practices, encompassing oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics, thereby laying the foundational framework for contemporary dental practices. Fauchard's innovations included the use of materials such as lead, tin, and gold for dental fillings and the introduction of early orthodontic techniques, notably the Bandeau. His treatise also emphasized the importance of preventive care and oral hygiene, which provided a basis for modern dental hygiene protocols. Additionally, Fauchard's critical evaluation of fraudulent practices and his inclusion of numerous clinical case studies in his treatise bridged theoretical knowledge with practical application, significantly impacting dental education and professional standards. Fauchard's influence extends beyond national boundaries, profoundly shaping global dental practices and educational frameworks. The Pierre Fauchard Academy, established in 1936, continues to uphold his principles, underscoring the enduring relevance of his contributions. Fauchard's work remains a cornerstone of modern dentistry, reflecting his profound and lasting impact on the discipline., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest: In compliance with the ICMJE uniform disclosure form, all authors declare the following: Payment/services info: All authors have declared that no financial support was received from any organization for the submitted work. - Abstract
An investigation of historical character aimed at briefly exposing the development of periodontology was carried out in Santiago de Cuba from 1974 to the present time. This specialty has been encouraging gradually and nowadays it has integrally prepared professionals to offer a specialized stomatological care with quality; it is also linked to the teaching-assistance activity, with a staff of 14 highly qualified professors. It can be affirmed then, that the human capital training has been fulfilled per years --according to the populational demand and the requirements of the National Health System--, because it has been contributed, in such an extent, to the improvement and preparation of these specialists aiming at preserving, during present and future times, the periodontal health of people from Santiago de Cuba. Dental education in Greece dates to the time of Venetian domination of the Ionian Islands. It became an academic lesson entitled “Art of the Dentist” in the Medical School of the Ionian Academy in 1843. However, the first university institution for dental education was established by the first government of Eleftherios Venizelos in terms of his ambitious reformation plan of the higher education in Greece. In 1911, the first Dental School was established, attached to the medical school, by the article 20 of the act of law ΓΩΚΓ΄ (ΦΕΚ 178/12-7- 1911) “On the Institution of the National University”. This was the first ever public third level institution of pure dental education in Greece. The medical doctors of that time demanded that dentistry should be a specialty of medicine, but the Minister of Education did not accept the proposal of the special committee of the parliament. The establishment of an independent Dental School was a legislative act of crucial importance for the development of dental education in Greece as it could follow the scientific progress in the field that took place in France and especially in USA. It was thus possible to follow the pioneers, free from the obsessions of Medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is not easy to analyse a complex figure like Silvio Palazzi (1892-1979). Without a doubt, he was one of the most prominent figures in the Italian odontostomatology scene for about fifty years and one of the absolute protagonists of the transition of Italian dentistry from the pioneering era to the scientific. He was certainly a precursor and a man with an open mind, endowed with a broad vision. Palazzi had an eclectic, versatile personality, from certain points of view even brilliant but also unpredictable and difficult to understand. He was at the centre of Italian dentistry’s academic and professional life; few can boast of a didactic, clinical, scientific activity like his. Having become, at a young age, the director of a clinic that was still little more than a dental practice, he was able to make it grow, revitalise it, bring it to a level of excellence that had no comparison in Italy but that could be compared to that of the great European dental clinics. He was the author of a “Treaty of Odontology” (which had seven editions) on which entire generations of dentists were formed, and he wrote over five hundred scientific publications in all the fields of Odontostomatology. He particularly favoured histological and histochemical investigations, as he often recalled, for having been trained in this sense by his attendance at the Institute of General Pathology of Pavia directed by Camillo Golgi (1843-1926, Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1906). In the clinical field, every sector of the dental discipline saw him as an attentive and passionate scholar, in particular of Endodontics and Periodontology. Furthermore, he was a pioneer of implantology when this branch received more criticism than success and began research on the prophylactic action of fluoride when many were against it. He fought assiduously for a different Italian dental legislation: he was a convinced supporter of a special Degree Course for the preparation of the future dentists, already in the Fifties. Since this project seemed difficult to carry out, he proposed, if nothing else, the requirement of a post-graduate specialisation to guarantee suitable training to dental practitioners. Despite this, due to his often aggressive and argumentative attitude, he lost the friendship of many colleagues and created numerous enemies. Certainly, he was a character who cannot go unnoticed and who, forty years after his death, deserves a careful historical evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Doctors and especially surgeons treated jaw fractures in early years. Since the era of ancient Egypt and there on to the Hippocratic Corpus, there were no significant advances in the management of Jaw fractures, until the 18
th century. Several bandaging techniques were used to set the fractures of the mandible. Only in 1743, Bunn was the first to use an intraoral splint. Until the end of the 18th century many splinting devices for the mandible were developed, the majority being rather complicated and consisting of intraoral splints with extra oral support. The first report on the fractures of the maxilla is dated in 1676, however their classification and description is attributed to Guerin and Le Fort in the second half of 19th century. It is really interesting, that although surgeons were setting the fractures, they soon had to join efforts with dentists. In fact, it was a natural result because dentists had the knowledge of impression materials and techniques, dental occlusion and also of manufacturing dental prosthesis. Intraoral tooth splinting for setting jaw fractures advanced in technique and was used as far as the 20th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
In 1916, Columbia University established the School of Dentistry (now known as the College of Dental Medicine). In 1917, the university merged the school with the newly acquired New York Post-graduate School of Dentistry and New York School of Dental Hygiene. To those working in the health sciences, the move was a powerful signal of a field on the rise. It recognized dental medicine as a key component of individual and social well-being and initiated a monumental era in medical innovation and progressive public health outcomes. This hundred-year history shares the turbulent story of dentistry, a medical field in the making. It recounts the institutional battles and research controversies that set the terms for the development and practice of dentistry. The assimilation of the dental school into the university system was not smooth. Rivalries played out in public and in private; traditionalists fought the inclusion of a young and evolving medical approach. Once the school found its footing, the College of Dental Medicine developed rapidly, and by the end of the twentieth century, had successfully launched a series of global outreach programs that immeasurably helped impoverished and underserved communities worldwide. The school's work now includes transitioning the field into the digital age and effecting even greater change in the lives of those without access to high-quality dental care. Featuring fascinating biographical details of the school's major teachers, administrators, and graduates, this book secures the reputation of Columbia University's College of Dental Medicine as a global leader in advancing the public good.

THIRD molars ,DENTAL extraction ,SCIENTIFIC literature ,PRACTICE of dentistry ,SCIENTIFIC Revolution - Abstract
Although tooth extraction has been one of the oldest practices in Dentistry, it become an independent field only at the first quarter of the previous century. That was the result of scientific advances in the fields of anesthesia and radiography, as well as the research efforts of George B. Winter. Through his books, a scientific revolution was affected in Exodontia and the respective term was established in the Anglo-Saxon world. Therefore, Winter should be considered as the father of modern Exodontia. His studies on teeth extraction, in particular the extraction of impacted third molars were pioneering and retain their value up to date. A characteristic example is the categorization of impacted third molars according to Winter, known in the international scientific literature with the acronym W.A.R. lines (White, Amber, Red). In the present review the contribution of George B. Winter in the establishment of modern Exodontia and the categorization of impacted third molars is described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The began of the dentistry as medicine's concept has a long history dating back to 7000 BCE, making it one of the earliest medical specialties. In its early days, dental diseases were often attributed to supernatural causes like "evil spirits" and "tooth worms." However, today, dentistry leverages cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, for diagnosis and treatment. This journey reflects the remarkable progress made in the field. Despite these advancements, there is still room for improvement in integrating dental knowledge and skills with medical science and engineering backgrounds. Bridging these disciplines could lead to even greater advancements in the diagnosis and maintenance of oral health. Thus, over time, it has transformed from a primitive form of medicine into a modern field that emphasizes preventative dental care, advanced diagnostics, and state-of-the-art treatment.

With this volume of the Journal of the History of Dentistry we are proud to introduce to our readers and our healing professions, in-depth Essays that focuses on our historical evolution. One might ask, "What is an Essay and Why is This Unique?" The simplest definition of an essay is a non-fictional written work that focuses on a particular subject, sometimes in general terms and sometimes in depth. The word "essay" is derived from the French word "essai," (or as a collection "Essais) meaning trial or attempt. The first use of this approach to address a particular issue has often been attributed to the Frenchman Michel de Montaigne, born in 1533 (Fig. 1)., (Copyright 2024 © American Academy of the History of Dentistry.)

- Abstract
Pierre Fauchard, considered the father of dentistry, contributed to the development of different fields of dentistry that we know today. However, the contribution of this important individual to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology is unknown. This study aimed to identify Pierre Fauchard's contribution to these areas of dentistry. We focused on " Le Chirurgien Dentiste, or Traité des Dents " in both French and English, looking for information about the oral diseases diagnosed and treated by Fauchard. Information on patient history, disease description, treatment applied, and clinical follow-up was collected. A contemporary analysis of the diseases was performed, and the collected data were systematized, reported, and analyzed descriptively, according to the current literature on the addressed topics. Information on conditions such as scurvy, parulides, epulides, oral ulcers, dentoalveolar abscesses, dental alterations, and post-exodontia incidents were elucidated. Findings indicated that Pierre Fauchard described, diagnosed, and treated different soft and hard tissue diseases of great interest to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology., (Copyright 2024 © American Academy of the History of Dentistry.)

- Abstract
History of Dentistry starts from the moment the Late Paleolithic Man used a toothpick fashioned from a bone or wood splinter, or the moment our human ancestors began to manipulate the surface of a tooth to remove its retentiveness, so food does not get stuck. That was at least 14,000 years ago, based on available evidence. The current timeline, compiled in this article, is one of many published over the years. However, this timeline incorporates three new strategies. First, it extends to select medical and fundamental dental discoveries, as the History of Dentistry can only be told with the main events within the History of Medicine. Second, it is more detailed (350 entries) than any previous timeline the author has encountered. Third, several critical primary references to support events listed in this timeline characterize this effort. Finally, 130 illustrations are included to improve the visualization of dates. The manuscript also includes a new display of the five main stages of dentistry throughout its history., (Copyright 2024 © American Academy of the History of Dentistry.)

47. Digitizing Dentistry's Multifaceted History: Why It Is Necessary.

Van Tilburg, Chase A.
- Abstract
In 1929, the Gies Report, published by William J. Gies, outlined the foundational criteria for a relatively standardized dental education across the United States. Although it was not included in Gies' original report, the history of dentistry would eventually become an essential part of that curriculum. Contemporary dental education has pushed the history of dentistry to the side, however, implying that it is unnecessary. Doing so causes much of the responsibility to educate both dental students and the public to fall on institutions like the Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry (NMD). The creation of an open-access digital dental history database at the NMD that highlights the multifaceted nature of dental history will be a necessary step forward and a vital resource for curtailing the ambivalent attitude that has developed towards the history of dentistry. Much of the scholarship about the history of dentistry has researched various aspects of the discipline's development over time, but has inadequately addressed the reason why the history of dentistry is as vital today as it was fifty years ago. Filling this noticeable gap is necessary because more and more dental students are leaving dental school with little knowledge about the history of their discipline and where they fit within that history. This paper traces the history of dental education in the United States, examining some of its many facets, and provides a comparative analysis of different physical and online dental history collections to fill this gap. First, the author conducted interviews with Dr. Andrew I. Spielman, President of the American Academy of the History of Dentistry, and Dr. Scott Swank, curator of the NMD, to evaluate the state of the history of dentistry in contemporary dental curricula. In addition to these interviews, understanding what makes the history of dentistry multifaceted is integral to comprehending its impact on the profession, contemporary society, and why it needs to be taught or learned. Finally, this paper compares physical and online dental collections to evaluate best practices for creating an online dental history collection and examines how such a database can be used by its stewarding institution. Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the use of ion beam polishing for preparing crosssections suitable for high-resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation of dental implants with a brittle porous oxide layer and of bone/implant interfaces. Materials and Methods: Thirteen Nobel Biocare TiUnite implants were placed in minipigs. After 4 weeks, the implant and surrounding bone were removed en bloc and the implant was cut axially into two halves. The cross section was then polished with an argon ion beam. Additionally, ion beam-polished cross sections were prepared from four as-received implants. Ion beam-polished surfaces were studied with a field emission SEM (FE-SEM). Results: With FE-SEM, up to 1 mm along the interface of ion beam-polished implant surfaces can be studied with a resolution of a few nanometers. Filled and unfilled pores of the porous TiUnite coating can be distinguished, providing information on pore accessibility. Implant-bone interfaces can be analyzed using backscattered electron images, where titanium, the oxide layer, mineralized extracellular matrix, and osteocyte lacunae/resin/soft tissue can easily be distinguished as a result of atomic number contrast and the sharp boundaries between the different materials. Filled and unfilled pores can be distinguished. Characterization of local chemistry is possible with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and bone growth into small pores (< 1 ?m) can be unambiguously confirmed. Conclusion: FE-SEM complements the established methods for the characterization of interfaces and bridges the wide gap in accessible length scale and resolution between the observations of mechanically polished interfaces by optical or scanning electron microscopes and the observation of focused ion beam-milled sections in a transmission electron microscope. Purpose: To assess the esthetic and functional outcome, as well as the volume maintenance, of autogenous block grafts placed in anterior sextants of thin periodontal biotype subjects over a long-term period. Materials and Methods: Fifteen consecutive patients were followed up yearly for an average of 40 months after autogenous block grafting. Preoperative and postoperative cone beam computed tomographic scans were analyzed to evaluate bone volume maintenance around the implants placed in the grafted sites. Clinical parameters (mucosal recession and implant transparency through the soft tissue) were assessed at prosthesis delivery and follow-up to evaluate the esthetic outcome. Digital photographs were used to confirm clinical outcomes. Results: The average augmentation per site was 2.2 times the initial buccolingual (BL) width, and 97% of the augmented width was maintained after 3.3 years. The difference between preaugmentation and postaugmentation BL width, 3.3 versus 7.4 mm, was statistically significant (P < .0001; CI 95%: 3.4 to 4.9 mm). There was a lack of implant transparency or mucosal recession around the implants in all 15 patients after an average of 40 months. Conclusions: Autogenous block grafting seems to be a predictable treatment modality to reconstruct alveolar ridge defects in the long term. A thin periodontal biotype did not seem to affect the volume of transplanted bone for the population studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
